Abstract:
Has the industry seen the light on project delivery? Numerous signs of improved execution through the downturn in Australia and across the globe suggest oil and gas companies are finally getting it right after a lengthy period of dismal performance. Even before prices went to US$100 per barrel and beyond, the oil and gas industry had a poor track record of delivering major projects. However, higher prices exacerbated the situation, encouraging poor capital discipline and overconfidence in undertaking large-scale, highly complex projects that overstretched the supply chain. The results were delays, cost overruns and billions of dollars in value destroyed. Over the past decade the average project was delivered 6 months late, with costs up 14% compared with the forecast at final investment decision. The top 15 cost blowouts were a cumulative US$80 billion over budget. Much of that was in Australia. But lessons have been learned. Without the safety net of higher prices, the successful execution of capital projects has become of crucial importance to the industry. There is now evidence of post-downturn projects being delivered on time and on budget; in Australasia, recent examples include Greater Western Flank Phase 2 and the Bayu-Undan infill drilling campaign. But do these successes mean execution has really improved? It can be argued these are relatively simple brownfield, subsea developments. When we enter the next investment cycle with bigger projects (Scarborough, Browse and Barossa), will we see the same old mistakes repeated again?

Abstract:
We developed an electronic pneumatic barostat to measure changes in gallbladder muscle tone in vivo independent of biliary flow dynamics. Dogs were prepared with a gallbladder cannula for insertion of barostat balloon and an inflatable balloon-occluder around the cystic duct. The barostat was validated to maintain a constant pressure of 2 +/- 0.4 (SE) mmHg within a plastic balloon of “infinite” compliance that filled the gallbladder lumen; changes in balloon volume reflected changes in wall tone because intraluminal pressure was kept constant. Gallbladder tone, as measured by the barostat balloon volume, varied cyclically with the duodenal migrating motor complex and decreased by 28 +/- 8% (P less than 0.05) at the time of phase III in the stomach and duodenum. Superimposed rapid changes in barostat volume occurred during phase III. The barostat response to motilin mimicked events during spontaneous phase III; in contrast, the response to cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-OP) was greater (volume decrease = 53 +/- 12%) and no phasic changes occurred. Two distinct patterns of gallbladder contraction were demonstrated: a basal tone increase with superimposed phasic contractions observed during phase III and after motilin, and a basal tone increase without phasic activity that occurs after CCK-OP.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The assessment of parameters which adequately represent rectal and neorectal compliance is complex. Biological properties of the rectum during distension and relaxation show significant departures from in vitro physical compliance measurements; as much dependent upon the viscoelastic characteristics of hollow organ deformation as upon the technique of compliance calculation. This review discusses the pressure/volume characteristics of importance in the rectum during distension from a bioengineering perspective and outlines the disparities of such measurements in living biological systems. Techniques and pitfalls of newer methods to assess rectal wall stiffness (impedance planimetry and barostat measurement) are discussed. .

Abstract:
Ecosystem management policies are complex and susceptible to social conflict because of uncertainty and many interests. The management policy without considering the mangrove ecosystem services is also believed to be one of the main factors causing the degradation of mangrove ecosystem. This research intends to formulate management strategy by considering the type of mangrove ecosystem services that is important according to the perspective of the community user. A total of 108 respondents were included in the survey. The results of PCA (Principal component analysis) showed that there were three main components formed with cumulative variance of 75,238%. The three components are physical ecological function which has the highest eigenvalue of 4,454 and 49,494% of variance, followed by tourism 14,150%, forest and fishery products 11,594%. The main components can be interpreted as a priority that can be used as the basis for management strategies. Therefore, an appropriate management strategy to be implemented based on these priorities is to harmonize the ecological functions and physical benefits of the processes that take place in the mangrove ecosystem with the use of educational based tourism. Abstract:
Abstract The industrial production has suffered from huge amounts of waste discharges that contain valuable unreacted components as well as major contaminants that affect the environment. Just like heat integration, mass integration evolves around recycling the discharge streams back into the process to increase the overall plant performance and decrease the fresh feedstock resources used as well as extracting the valuable by-products whether in product streams or waste streams; thus, decreasing the overall cost and increasing the production value of outcomes. The study has tackled mass integration graphically on an existing production process, acrylonitrile, and evaluated the performance of mass-exchange networks. It also suggested improvements can be recommended in terms of composition driving forces inside mass exchangers. The mass network developed improved both the production yield and the product quality. In this research, the plant, located in Baroda complex, India, on a 500 m2 area, has been studied for mass integration using mass separating agents. The mass separating agents used were water and benzene. A mass exchange network design has been conducted in the feasible design regions to achieve maximum mass recovery and mass targets of each mass exchanger. Three extra units were added for Acetonitrile removal, Hydrogen cyanide removal, and Acrylonitrile extraction.

Abstract:
The journey and stay of the Hungarian queen Elizabeth Łokietek, mother of King Lajos the Great and widow of King Charles Robert, to the Kingdoms of Naples and Rome from June 1343 until May 1344, is a well-researched topic in historiography. On that journey the queen was accompanied, as a Hungarian chronicler noted, by her court, numerous ladies-in-waiting, girls of noble origin, Hungarian barons, knights and servants. Yet, of all the women accompanying the queen, only the identity of one of her court ladies is known, that of aristocrat Maria Follia. Her presence in the (closest) surrounding of the queen is testified by two diplomatic sources, one of Hungarian and another of Naples provenance. Maria was the widow of a recently deceased Hungarian palatine William Drugeth (who died in September 1342). The author in this paper investigates the causes and complex circumstances under which Maria Follia participated in the Italian journey of her mistress. The issue is all the more interesting since it is known that, after the death of palatine William, the Drugeth family, until then the most powerful Hungarian baron family, lost their wealth, fortune and positions in the royal court. One of the possible answers to this question is a conclusion that the palatine’s widow, independent of her husband’s family, stayed in good relations with Queen Elizabeth and kept her positions in the royal court.

Abstract:
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations represent an essential tool in the toolbox of modern chemistry, enabling the prediction of experimental observables for a variety of chemical systems and processes and majorly impacting the study of biological membranes. However, the chemical diversity of complex lipids beyond phospholipids brings new challenges to well-established protocols used in MD simulations of soft matter and requires continuous assessment to ensure simulation reproducibility and minimize unphysical behavior. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are highly charged glycolipids whose aggregation in a lamellar arrangement requires the binding of numerous cations to oppositely charged groups deep inside the membrane. The delicate balance between the fully hydrated carbohydrate region and the smaller hydrophobic core makes LPS membranes very sensitive to the choice of equilibration protocol. In this work, we show that the protocol successfully used to equilibrate phospholipid bilayers when applied to complex lipopolysaccharide membranes occasionally leads to a small expansion of the simulation box very early in the equilibration phase. Although the use of a barostat algorithm controls the system dimension and particle distances according to the target pressure, fluctuation in the fleeting pressure occasionally enables a few water molecules to trickle into the hydrophobic region of the membrane, with spurious solvent buildup. We show that this effect stems from the initial steps of NPT equilibration, where initial pressure can be fairly high. This can be solved with the use of a stepwise-thermalization NVT/NPT protocol, as demonstrated for atomistic MD simulations of LPS/DPPE and lipid-A membranes in the presence of different salts using an extension of the GROMOS forcefield within the GROMACS software. This equilibration protocol should be standard procedure for the generation of consistent structural ensembles of charged glycolipids starting from atomic coordinates not previously pre-equilibrated. Although different ways to deal with this issue can be envisioned, we investigated one alternative that could be readily available in major MD engines with general users in mind.

Meaney, Kieran James. "Proterozoic crustal growth in the southeastern Gawler Craton: the development of the Barossa Complex, and an assessment of the detrital zircon method." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/114255.

Full text
Abstract:
The Barossa Complex, southeast Gawler Craton, South Australia, forms the southeastern-most exposure of pre-Neoproterozoic crust in Australia. Understanding the geodynamic evolution of this area can improve paleogeographic reconstructions of the economically significant Gawler Craton, as well as global reconstructions in the Proterozoic. The first part of this thesis addresses the geological development of the Barossa Complex during the Palaeo-Mesoproterozoic. The Barossa Complex is composed of metasedimentary and metaigneous gneisses. These include calcsilicate, quartzofeldspathic, psammopelitic, and pelitic gneisses. In the northern inliers, the protoliths to these gneisses are indicative of a progressively deepening basin. Syndepositional felsic orthogneisses and mafic amphibolites indicate a tectonically active basin. Deposition of the metasedimentary protoliths to the Barossa Complex occurred between 1730-1655 Ma, synchronous to the onset of the Kimban Orogeny in the Gawler Craton and the deposition of the Willyama Supergroup in the Curnamona Province. U-Pb and Hf isotopic analyses from detrital zircon indicates sediment was largely derived from the Gawler Craton. Syndepositional granite intrusions occurred in the northern extent of the Barossa Complex at 1717 ±7 Ma. Metamorphism initiated in the Barossa Complex at c. 1630 Ma with the development of a low angle metamorphic fabric. Peak granulite conditions of approximately 8-9 kbar and 800-850 °C occurred at c. 1590 Ma in the southern Barossa Complex. The northern Barossa Complex preserves lower grade metamorphic features and c. 1600 Ma zircon with hydrothermal Rare Earth Element (REE) signatures, which are potentially linked to the Hiltaba event in the Gawler Craton. Post peak metamorphism continued until c. 1550 Ma and is associated with retrograde shear zones in the southern Barossa Complex, and late pegmatites in the northern inliers. The Barossa Complex shares a depositional and metamorphic history with the Willyama Supergroup in the Curnamona Province and Mt. Isa Inlier basin sequences, and was part of a transcontinental plate margin system during the Late Palaeo- Early Mesoproterozoic. East dipping subduction was the likely driver for extensive rift basin development across the eastern margin of Proterozoic Australia before the Isan-Olarian Orogeny inverted these basins. The Barossa Complex is the southern-most exposure of this system. The second part of this thesis addresses the use of detrital zircon in modern sediment as a means of characterising the bedrock of a catchment area, which has been used previously in the Gawler Craton and Curnamona Province. In the Broken Hill area of the Curnamona Province, stream sediments were sampled from drainage pathways with catchments that have stratigraphically and chronologically well characterised bedrock lithologies. Zircon ages from the modern sediment found up to 30% of the zircons were significantly younger than what expected from the bedrock sources (>1.6 Ga). Aeolian dune sands from the Strzelecki Desert to the north of the study area are found to contain zircon with U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic compositions matching the ‘exotic’ zircon populations in Broken Hill. Aeolian detritus is considered to have contributed zircon to the stream sediments in Broken Hill, and should be considered in any study utilising modern detritus in arid environments. Detrital zircon provenance studies of the geological record should be interpreted cautiously if aeolian input may have occurred.

Abstract:
Dissenter from the Fourth Crusade, disseised earl of Leicester, leader of the Albigensian Crusade, prince of southern France: Simon of Montfort led a remarkable career of ascent from mid-level French baron to semi-independent count before his violent death before the walls of Toulouse in 1218. Through the vehicle of the crusade, Simon cultivated autonomous power in the liminal space between competing royal lordships in southern France in order to build his own principality. This first English biographical study of his life examines the ways in which Simon succeeded and failed in developing this independence in France, England, the Midi, and on campaign to Jerusalem. Simon’s familial, social, and intellectual connexions shaped his conceptions of political order, which he then implemented in his conquests. By analysing contemporary narrative, scholastic, and documentary evidence—including a wealth of archival material—this book argues that Simon’s career demonstrates the vitality of baronial independence in the High Middle Ages, despite the emergence of centralised royal bureaucracies. More importantly, Simon’s experience shows that barons themselves adopted methods of government that reflected a concern for accountability, public order, and contemporary reform ideals. This study therefore marks an important entry in the debate about baronial responsibility in medieval political development, as well as providing the most complete modern account of the life of this important but oft-overlooked crusader.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the expansion of Christendom functioned as an outlet for antagonisms between sovereigns and barons. Crusade in medieval epics allows barons to escape oppression and to become sovereigns: the Crusade Cycle makes Godefroi de Bouillon a Christian hero equal to Charlemagne, whereas the hero of Huon de Bordeaux, exiled by Charlemagne, becomes heir to a marvellous eastern empire. Roland in the Franco-Italian L’Entrée d’Espagne, also cast out, brings Western civilization to Persia. Another Franco-Italian work, Huon d’Auvergne, tells the hero’s journey to hell at the request of Charles Martel, whose fantasy of complete earthly jurisdiction turns nightmarish. The dream of a world Christian community shapes a utopian, integrative approach to other genres in these texts, which bring travel writing to describe the East that the heroes conquer. The chansons de geste dialogue with other generic material to find new solutions to the old king–baron antagonism.

Abstract:
Though the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) ostensibly extended American citizenship to the Mexican landed class at the conclusion of the Mexican American War and ensured their property rights despite the transfer of land to the U.S., they were nonetheless stripped of formal claims to their property and forced to enter into lengthy and costly legal battles to regain possession of these ranches. Hidalgos had to compete with Anglo agricultural settlers (or squatters), as well as with the railroad barons looking to expand railways in the newly annexed territories. Women are able to best navigate the unstable political economy of the borderlands through the act of squatting, understood broadly to mean the settlement of “unoccupied” land. Read alongside the significant historical events including various land laws and pre-emption acts of the mid-nineteenth century, hidalgo women perform forms of ownership that upend the racialized and gendered logics of citizenship, and the intimate ties between property and rights. The Squatter and the Don recasts the “problem” of Mexican land occupation as U.S. anxiety over territorial expansion and colonization made more complex by the presence of differently racialized populations along the borderlands.

Abstract:
Glaucoma is a general term for the deterioration of the optic nerve head usually associated with an increase of intraocular pressure (IOP). Certain types of glaucoma are associated directly with the displacement of the iris from its normal morphology [1]. For example, angle closure glaucoma and pigment dispersion syndrome involve abnormal anterior or posterior displacement of the iris, respectively [2]. In angle closure, the abnormal position of the peripheral iris blocks aqueous humor access to the outflow pathway (trabecular meshwork), increasing the IOP. Although there has been a considerable amount of ultrastructural characterization of the iris [3], to our knowledge, there as been little done on the mechanical characterization of the iris other than a previous study by Heys and Barocas on passive bovine irides [4]. To have a complete understanding of these it requires that we understand the mechanical properties of the iris in both its passive and stimulated states. Mechanical analysis of the iris requires the consideration of its two constituent muscles, the inner sphincter iridis and the outer dilator pupillae, see Fig. 1. The sphincter iridis is innervated parasympathetically whereas the dilator is innervated sympathetically.

Abstract:
Abstract PETRONAS Baronia field is a mature oil field with over 45 years of production history, located offshore Sarawak, Malaysia. It consists of several vertically stacked clastic sandstone reservoirs, namely two major reservoirs: S and V2 reservoirs. Both reservoirs have been on production since 1970's with the production strategy evolving over the years to maximize recovery. Natural depletion, infill drilling, water and gas injection, and recently Immiscible Water-Alternating-Gas (IWAG) IOR/EOR strategies have been implemented. All these elements combined with the subsurface uncertainties pose challenges to history match and to conduct probabilistic forecast studies on the dynamic models. Conventionally, the development scenarios for subsurface investigation are limited due to finite computing resources. As PETRONAS is shifting its portfolios to develop more complex and challenging fields, the need for transformation in development concept evaluation is evident. This is key for proper risk and uncertainties quantification. The notable challenges are a) limited number of development scenarios being investigated, evaluated, and compared; b) limited software licenses and infrastructure availability; c) lack of data and decisions traceability. These limitations are addressed by the PETRONAS LiveFDP digital transformation initiative commenced in 2019, through deployment of digital cloud technologies and solutions with scalable High- Performance Computing (HPC) environment. The cloud-based native and Petrotechnical applications enable remote work, ensure full data traceability and auditability, enable multi-realization ensemble analysis, and streamline the automated integration from the reservoir engineering ensemble workflow to economic analysis. Unlimited cloud computing power and licenses facilitate a broader spectrum of reservoir simulation cases to be investigated in a fast-tracked manner. The cloud HPC infrastructure has shortened the history matching cycle from 3 months to 1.5 months. The team has also observed over 5 times speed enhancement on simulation run performance using cloud computing compared to virtual machine and on-premise infrastructure. Utilizing the cloud solutions and ensemble probabilistic approach, the team has achieved over 90% of history match quality through 300 realizations per ensemble running concurrently and completed within 2 hours. The optimized IWAG injection resulted in 2% (~1MMStb) higher oil reserves with 37% less gas injection and 40% shorter injection cycles. This has improved gas sales and prioritization in the field while also monetizing the oil reserves. The ensemble analyses are then visualized using cloud-based data analytics system whereby key realizations and uncertainty parameters are further reviewed and highlighted across various disciplines collaboratively at real time.
