Abstract:
The Annales ecclesiastici (12 vols, 1588–1607), composed by the Italian cardinal Cesare Baronio, rank amongst the most important publications of the Counter-Reformation era. Their fame earned Baronio his cardinal’s hat, while their impact on the Catholic world far exceeded that of the rival Magdeburg Centuries among Protestants. Recent scholarship has thrown new light on the aims and reception of the Annales. In particular, scholars have shown that Baronio was preoccupied more with the conversion of heretics than with their confutation, and they have demonstrated that the reception of the Annales, especially in the Iberian Peninsula, was less unanimously positive than hitherto supposed. Building on these insights, this article turns to Baronio’s much neglected authorial persona, not only as an ecclesiastical historian but also as an aspiring saint. It studies the ways in which Baronio’s own personal virtues and those of his mentor, Philip Neri, were used to present the Annales as a work of, quite literally, divine inspiration, before turning to the reception of the Annales in Catholicism’s northern borderlands. The article suggests that even there the Annales were more controversial than realized, but that ambivalence was masked by the dictates of time and place.

Abstract While insults and name-calling are no strangers to scholarly debate, exchanges between Gretser and the elder Junius, Scaliger and Petau, Casaubon and Baronio, and others in the early decades of the seventeenth century exhibit a remarkable level of bitter and insulting vituperation. The present paper presents some examples and suggests some motives for their violent rhetorical behavior

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Temnothorax is a large myrmicine ant genus with a range spanning the northern hemisphere, including the northern half of the Neotropics. Many of the Neotropical species were originally placed in the now defunct genus Macromischa. Recent molecular work has revealed that distinct lineages of Neotropical Temnothorax have arrived by evolutionary convergenceat a morphological syndrome with characteristics that were used to diagnose the former genus Macromischa. One such lineage is the salvini clade, which in this study is redefined to contain 63 species, 35 of which are described as new. A key to all species of the salvini clade based on the worker caste is provided; additionally, a worker-based key to all clades of the New World is provided. The following species are redescribed: T. albispinus (Wheeler), T. androsanus (Wheeler), T. annexus (Baroni Urbani), T. augusti (Baroni Urbani), T. aztecus (Wheeler), T. ciferrii (Menozzi & Russo), T. flavidulus (Wheeler & Mann), T. fuscatus (Mann), T. goniops (Baroni Urbani), T. huehuetenangoi (Baroni Urbani), T. ixili (Baroni Urbani), T. leucacanthus (Baroni Urbani), T. nigricans (Baroni Urbani), T. ocarinae (Baroni Urbani), T. pastinifer (Emery), T. pergandei (Emery), T. politus (Smith), T. pulchellus (Emery), T. rugosus (Mackay), T. salvini (Forel), T. schwarzi (Mann), T. skwarrae (Wheeler), T. subditivus (Wheeler), T. tenuisculptus (Baroni Urbani), T. terricola (Mann), T. terrigena (Wheeler), T. torrei (Aguayo). The gynes of T. ciferrii, T. fuscatus, T. ixili, T. politus, T. rugosus, T. salvini, T. tenuisculptus and T. torrei are described. The males of T. albispinus and T. fuscatus are described. Lectotypes are designated for T. androsanus, T. annexus, T. augusti, T. aztecus, T. flavidulus, T. fuscatus, T. nigricans, T. pastinifer, T. pergandei, T. politus, T. pulchellus, T. salvini, T. skwarrae, T. subditivus, T. terricola, and T. terrigena. Abstract:
Long ago, in an ambitious and valuable study, Sidney Painter sought to trace the progress of incomes from the estates of lay baronies between 1086 and 1350. While Painter suggested that some of the nominal growth in baronial incomes he found represented a real increase, especially before 1250, he was astute enough to realise that at least most of the nominal growth had probably arisen from price increases. Since Painter wrote, opinions about the success or otherwise of estate management in outpacing or at least matching rises in prices during the period of the “long thirteenth century” have differed considerably, from the decidedly optimistic to the somewhat pessimistic. This is certainly an important question. If the fortunes of landlords cannot tell us directly about the fortunes of peasants, they can, in conjunction with a view of the progress of the economy as a whole, throw some light on the relationship between the two groups. Dealing largely with the aggregates of the incomes of entire honours, as Painter did, is a pragmatic and useful approach. However, it does have the disadvantage of conflating two questions: the success or failure of a family or institution in preserving or increasing its estates, and their success or otherwise in preserving or increasing the real profits of individual holdings.

Abstract:
In 2012, around 8.2 million deaths were caused by cancer. More than 30% of cancer deaths are caused by five behavioral and dietary factors. One of the factors is the lack of consumption of vegetables and fruit. One way to prevent cancer is to consume foods rich in antioxidants. Sources of antioxidants can be obtained from vegetables and fruits. Barobbo is a traditional food from South Sulawesi made from corn. Barobbo is still demand by the public. Corn is in second place after bananas for the people of South Sulawesi to be processed into food, both in the form of cakes, traditional foods, and vegetable blends. The problem formulation of this research is knowing how much the antioxidant content in traditional foods of barobbo yellow corn and white pulit corn. This study aims to analyze the antioxidant content in traditional foods of yellow corn and white pulut corn barobbo. This research is laboratory research. The research was carried out in two stages, the first stage of making barobbo to determine the standard of serving and the second stage of making barobbo, which was to analyze the antioxidant content of barobbo, yellow corn and white pulut corn. The conclusion of this study is that the content of yellow corn, vitamin A in 100 grams of barobbo is 353 μg and vitamin C as much as 10 mg. While the content of vitamin A barobbo in 100 grams of white pulut is 273 μg and vitamin C as much as 26.4 mg. For further studi this recomended to make a temperature measurement on the baroobo cooking process so that the temperature of making barobbo can be measured. In addition, barobbo is recommended for public consumption because it has high levels of vitamin A and vitamin C.

Abstract:
Violet-throated Metaltail Metallura baroni is a threatened hummingbird species, endemic to the Andes of southern Ecuador. Details about the reproductive biology of this species are largely unknown. In this manuscript, we describe the nest, eggs, and nestlings"™ development based on nine nests found along with the Cuenca-Molleturo-Naranjal road, in Cajas National Park, in 2019. We document a breeding period from March to May, which corresponds to the rainy season. All nests were found in roadside embankments, and were constructed with mosses, small twigs, rootlets, Polylepis sp. (Rosaceae) bark, and Puya sp. (Bromeliaceae) fibers. In all nests, we found two white oval eggs that were exclusively attended by a female across the breeding period. Hatching to fledging period lasted 28-32 days. Nesting at roadsides can be particularly risky due to a high probability of collision with vehicles; thus, an assessment of the breeding success of M. baroni on nests located at roadsides is a research priority for this species. The information provided here increases the knowledge about the natural history of M. baroni.

Abstract:
Abstract: North of Shanxi, Datong Yunzhou District is the base for the cultivation of Hemerocallis citrina Baroni, which is the main production and marketing product driving the local economy. Hemerocallis citrina Baroni and other crops’ picking rules are different: the picking cycle is shorter, the frequency is higher, and the picking conditions are harsh. Therefore, in order to reduce the difficulty and workload of picking Hemerocallis citrina Baroni, this paper proposes the GGSC YOLOv5 algorithm, a Hemerocallis citrina Baroni maturity detection method integrating a lightweight neural network and dual attention mechanism, based on a deep learning algorithm. First, Ghost Conv is used to decrease the model complexity and reduce the network layers, number of parameters, and Flops. Subsequently, combining the Ghost Bottleneck micro residual module to reduce the GPU utilization and compress the model size, feature extraction is achieved in a lightweight way. At last, the dual attention mechanism of Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) and the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) is introduced to change the tendency of feature extraction and improve detection precision. The experimental results show that the improved GGSC YOLOv5 algorithm reduced the number of parameters and Flops by 63.58% and 68.95%, respectively, and reduced the number of network layers by about 33.12% in terms of model structure. In the case of hardware consumption, GPU utilization is reduced by 44.69%, and the model size was compressed by 63.43%. The detection precision is up to 84.9%, which is an improvement of about 2.55%, and the real-time detection speed increased from 64.16 FPS to 96.96 FPS, an improvement of about 51.13%.

Abstract:
Philodryas baroni—an attractively colored snake—has become readily available through the exotic pet trade. Most people consider this species harmless; however, it has already caused human envenomation. As little is known about the venom from this South American opisthoglyphous “colubrid” snake, herein, we studied its protein composition by sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), as well as its effects on the hemostatic system. Both reducing and nonreducing SDS-PAGE analysis demonstrated that the venom exhibits greatest complexity in the range of 50–80 kDa. The venom displayed proteolytic activity toward azocollagen, with a specific activity of 75.5 U mg−1, and rapidly hydrolyzed the Aα-chain of fibrinogen, exhibiting lower activity toward the Bβ- and γ-chains. The venom from P. baroni showed no platelet proaggregating activity per se, but it inhibited collagen- and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. Prominent hemorrhage developed in mouse skin after intradermal injection of the crude venom, and its minimum hemorrhagic dose was 13.9 μg. When injected intramuscularly into the gastrocnemius of mice, the venom induced local effects such as hemorrhage, myonecrosis, edema, and leucocyte infiltration. Due to its venom toxicity shown herein, P. baroni should be considered dangerous to humans and any medically significant bite should be promptly reviewed by a qualified health professional.

Abstract:
This essay analyzes the recent book Fifteen Ways to Leave Badiou, produced by the Egyptian curator Bassam El Baroni for the Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum (ACAF). For the project, which was carried out in 2011, concurrent with the events of the Arab Spring, El Baroni invited a group of artists from the Middle East to produce works responding to Alain Badiou's text “Fifteen Theses on Contemporary Art”. The essay has three objectives, the first of which is to situate Fifteen Ways… relative to the ongoing encounter between contemporary global art and Western philosophy. Next, it considers how the works in the project can be said to stage an immanent critique of Badiou's aesthetic theory. Lastly, the essay examines the book within the context of the popular uprisings of 2011.

Abstract:
AbstractBarons's target article approaches errors in decision-making by defining three kinds of models: normative, descriptive, and prescriptive. Baron's prescriptive model is at the center of this commentary. From a theoretical perspective, is Baron's prescriptive model a set of rules through which one can move from the descriptive to the normative? Or is it a practical goal one can achieve as opposed to a normative unachievable theoretical ideal? Delineating an efficient prescriptive account for decision making necessarily depends on a very specific normative model. However, Baron's normative consequentialism model is too general to enable adequate prescriptive accounts.

Abstract This article explores the relationship between theology and documentary criticism in Cesare Baronio’s Annales Ecclesiastici in their own historical and intellectual context. The first two sections of this article are devoted to analyzing two episodes in Baronio’s work, which most clearly show the role of erudition and historical criticism in articulating crucial and controversial political and theological positions in post-Reformation Rome. The third and final section assesses the significance of Baronio’s historical methodology in the context of post-Reformation Catholicism and its importance for our understanding of the relationship between post-Humanist historiography and post-Reformation apologetics and, more generally, for our understanding of the nature of ecclesiastical history.

Abstract:
The three papers by Elisheva Carlebach, David Sorkin, and Adam Teller refreshingly do not merely invoke the name of Salo Baron as a sacred authority but actually reflect critically upon significant pieces of his scholarly corpus. As Adam Teller has pointed out correctly, academic historians of the Jews have sought for decades to align themselves with what they have taken to be the fundamental thrust of Baron's approach to his subject and have warned their students against too great a deviation from it. In the discourse of the field, to claim Baron's mantel is altogether bon ton, while “lachrymose” has long served as a term of severe reproach. Yet, many more people appear to have claimed to be Baron's acolytes in abjuring lachrymosity than have actually read a significant portion of Baron's corpus, much less seriously engaged with what he had to say in those writings. The three contributors are, happily, not among them: in their papers they all have entered into a genuine conversation with certain key propositions in Baron's work, with a mind to refining his insights and building upon them. Baron has served them not as an icon but as an interlocutor in the continuing discussion of significant problems to which he devoted much thought and study. That is a salutary development. Baron's contribution to the study of Jewish history was hardly exhausted by his articulation of a particular conceptual approach to it. As anyone who takes the multiple volumes of A Social and Religious History of the Jews or The Jewish Community in hand becomes aware immediately, Baron was a prodigious researcher whose painstaking mining (and in some cases even discovery) of a vast array of source materials laid the empirical foundations for future scholarship on a broad range of Jewish historical subjects. On that level, as well, reading his work returns significant rewards.

Abstract:
Eleven strains of anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli isolated from the human oral cavity were subjected to a comprehensive range of phenotypic and genotypic tests and were found to comprise two homogeneous groups, designated E2 and E4. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that members of both groups belonged to the genus Prevotella but were distinct from any species with validly published names. This distinction was confirmed by DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic tests. Two novel species are therefore proposed: Prevotella marshii sp. nov. (group E2) and Prevotella baroniae (group E4). Both species are saccharolytic; the end-products of fermentation for P. marshii are acetic, propionic and succinic acids, while P. baroniae produces acetic and succinic acids with minor amounts of isovaleric and isobutyric acids. The G+C content of the DNA of the type strain of Prevotella marshii is 51 mol% and that of Prevotella baroniae is 52 mol%. The type strain for P. marshii is E9.34T (=DSM 16973T=CCUG 50419T) and that for P. baroniae is E9.33T (=DSM 16972T=CCUG 50418T).

Abstract:
Mathematics is still viewed as a culture-free subject. This forms a negative perception for students on mathematics. Most students assume that mathematics and culture are not related. This may occur because mathematics taught in school is not contextual and far from the reality of everyday life. Historically, mathematics has become a part of everyday life. As a maritime nation, Indonesia has a diverse culture. But many teachers are not yet aware of the integration of the culture into mathematics learning. Barongko cake is one of the Buginese cultural heritages. Buginese people have unconsciously been practicing mathematics in making these cakes. Therefore, this research aims to explore activities in making Barongko cakes in the Buginese community that involves mathematical concepts. This research is a qualitative descriptive with an ethnographic approach. The data collection methods are carried out through observation, documentation, interview with an expert in making Barongko cake. This research found that Barongko making process involves mathematics in the concept of division, congruence, and similarity, as well as a triangular prism, and half sphere. This cake has the potential to be used as a source of contextual mathematics learning in schools.

Abstract:
AbstractPrecambrian continental extension is described in detail for the first time in the Victoria Land segment of the Transantarctic Mountains and is comparable with plume related intercontinental rifting of the Afar area, Africa. The Baronick Formation comprises igneous-derived conglomerate, marble and volcanic to sub-volcanic igneous layers. Volcanic and carbonate horizons were eroded in a fluvial or marine environment and provided debris for mass flow and slump deposits which formed in a marginal marine basin in the Precambrian. Clasts in these deposits include basalt, trachyte and comendite, and along with the interbedded volcanic layers of basalt, trachyte and quartz syenite, indicate proximity and contemporaneity of volcanic activity. Igneous layers and source rocks for clasts of the Baronick Formation have an enriched MORB chemistry and underwent albitization of calcic feldspar before erosion and conglomerate deposition. The Highway Suite forms a kilometre-scale body of gabbro and dolerite plugs and is interpreted as a slice of transitional continental oceanic crust. The chemistry of all igneous rocks suggests a continental rift environment and the associated sediments are consistent with such a setting. The Baronick Formation was locally intruded by sills of the Highway Suite; however, the main body of the Highway Suite was juxtaposed against the Baronick Formation during greenschist facies shearing before c. 551 Ma.

Abstract:
The impact of Salo Wittmayer Baron on the study of the history of the Jews during the Middle Ages has been enormous. This impact has, in part, been generated by Baron's voluminous writings, in particular his threevolume The Jewish Community and–even more so–his eighteen-volume Social and Religious History of the Jews. Equally decisive has been Baron's influence through his students and his students' students. Almost all researchers here in North America currently engaged in studying aspects of medieval Jewish history can surely trace their intellectual roots back to Salo Wittmayer Baron. In a real sense, many of Baron's views have become widey assumed starting points for the field, ideas which need not be proven or irgued but are simply accepted as givens. Over the next decade or decades, hese views will be carefully identified and reevaluated. At some point, a major study of Baron's legacy, including his influence on the study of medieval Jewish history, will of necessity eventuate. Such a study will have, on the one hand, its inherent intellectual fascination; at the same time, it will constitute an essential element in the next stages of the growth of the field, as it inevitably begins to make its way beyond Baron and his twentieth-century ambience.
