The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of innovative teaching strategies on the performance of students of grade 1. The experiment was done on the teaching of Management subject to the students of grade 1. A sample of 50 students (boys and girls) was selected randomly out of the population of 100 students in grade 1 from an MBA College of Baroda City. Two groups of 25 students each were made. Pre-test of General Management was given to both the groups and the results were recorded. One group was taken as a control group which was taught Management by the teacher who used conventional method of teaching while the other i.e. the experimental group was taught by the teacher who used innovative teaching techniques. After one month’s time of teaching, a post-test was conducted

Background: To compare the efficacy and safety of sublingual route of misoprostol with vaginal route of administration.Methods: This study was conducted at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical College, Baroda, Gujarat, India. 50 cases each with a singleton term pregnancy and a live fetus requiring induction of labor were allocated to sublingual and vaginal administration of misoprostol. Outcome measures related to labor and maternal and fetal side effects were compared between the 2 groups and evaluated using Chi square test and relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI).Results: The sublingual route of misoprostol was associated with a reduced risk of failed induction, reduced time from initiation to induction, reduced induction to delivery interval and a higher incidence of maternal and fetal side effects. However, the differences were not statistically significant.Conclusions: The sublingual route of administration of misoprostol is comparable in efficacy and safety to the vaginal route for induction.

This article is a critical appreciation of Raghav Kaneria’s welded sculptures done in scrap metal, mild steel, and stainless steel since 1962 to 2016.Though he has worked on many mediums like terracotta, bronze, wood, scrap metal, cement, assemblage etc. but in this article, I would like to concentrate only one medium and that is ‘sheet metal’ in its different forms like mild steel, stainless steel, and scrap metal. I have divided these works into three different phases depending on the style and treatment of his works and subject matter.
His first phase works were mostly done with scrap metals where found objects were welded together to create new forms. Many of these works were done when he was studying in Faculty of Fine Arts (Vadodara) and later in a Mumbai factory. These works have a rugged quality of the scrap metal sculptures with its strange primitive vitality. His second phase works were the smooth polished surfaces of abstract forms which he calls ‘sprouting’, done during his studies in Royal college of Art, London and during his teaching period in Waltham Forest Technical College, London and Hull College of Art, London. These sculptures consist of smooth tubular forms created in mild steel which were not an assemblage of direct forms, but a meticulous execution of forms inspired by nature. His third phase is the sensuous, simplistic, and decorative forms of Bull which he calls ‘Nandi’. They were done in stainless steel sheets in Baroda, between 2014- 2016. These forms in stainless steel were created using huge flat steel sheets joined together by welding. They are simply called the Nandi forms. These three phases have different approach of execution. In this article I have tried to bring together a selection of his oeuvres made in ‘metal sheets’ but with very different approach in each series evoking diverse expressions.

Background: The surgical treatment of inguinal hernias has evolved through several stage, history of groin hernia is the history of surgery itself. But, chronic pain is still a major irritating post-operative complain of the patient. The objective of the present study was to compare post-operative outcomes of mesh fixation with monofilament non-absorbable v/s monofilament absorbable suture material in terms of postoperative pain, chronic groin pain, seroma formation, wound infection, scrotal oedema and recurrence in Lichtenstein hernioplasty.Methods: This is a single center, prospective randomized controlled study of 152 cases of inguinal hernia comparing post-operative outcomes of mesh fixation with monofilament non-absorbable v/s monofilament absorbable suture material in Lichtenstein hernioplasty at Baroda Medical College and S.S.G. Hospital, between 1st November 2017 to 30th November 2018.Results: Total 152 patients of unilateral or bilateral inguinal hernia were studied 76 in each group. Chronic groin pain mean visual analogue scale score at 3 months was higher in group with non-absorbable suture compared to monofilament absorbable group (1.3±0.9 v/s 0.95±0.8 p value <0.05).Conclusions: Monofilament absorbable suture is associated with less chronic groin pain and compared to monofilament non-absorbable sutures.

Background: The incidence of malnutrition in children admitted to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), has always been significant. In addition, nutritional status of critically ill children deteriorates further during their PICU stay and may have negative effect on patients` outcome. This study aims to determine the critically ill children, to analyse and document its impact on outcome and to survey current nutritional practices and support in PICU. Methods: This was a prospective observational study done over a period of 10 months on critically ill patients admitted in PICU of department of pediatrics at Baroda medical college and Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad hospital, Vadodara. Results: Total of 350 patients admitted in PICU of S. S. G. hospital, Vadodara were enrolled in the study. Malnutrition was higher in age 6-60-month age group (57%) of patients admitted in PICU, 81% of severe acute malnutrition patients required mechanical ventilation and 19% required HFNC support, there was statistically significant difference in mortality (51.1%) of SAM patients as compared to normal patients. Conclusions: Malnutrition is one of the leading causes of mortality in patients admitted to PICU, with more complications with prolonged ventilator support, longer duration of stay in PICU.

Background: This randomized controlled trials was conducted for systematic comparison of suture mesh fixation (SMF) versus glue mesh fixation (GMF) in open inguinal hernia repair with regards to chronic groin pain, recurrence, operative time, post operative pain and postoperative complications.Methods: This study was a single-center, prospective randomized, controlled trial of two groups. It compared post-operative outcomes of mesh fixation with suture (Group A) versus glue (Group B). It was done at Baroda Medical College and S.S.G. Hospital, from May 2018 to January 2019 for case study, intervention and followed up for 9 months till October 2019.Results: Intra operative time duration for mesh fixation is less in Group B (glue mesh fixation) as compare with Group A (suture mesh fixation) with the statistically significant p value of 0.003. Post-operative pain score (mean VAS score) is significantly less in group B. Mean VAS in group A was 1.27 at 3 month while in group B was 1.06 with the p value of 0.048 on 3 month, which is statistically significant. It suggests that chronic groin pain (pain at or after 3 month) significantly less in group B as compared with group A.Conclusions: Mesh fixation by glue has advantage of less intra operative time duration and less post-operative pain and chronic groin pain as compare to mesh fixation by suture.

Background: Our objective in this research was to study the clinical profile of patients having iron deficiency anaemia.Methods: This was an observational cross sectional study conducted in Medicine out-patient and in-patient departments of Baroda Medical College and SSG Hospital, Vadodara from February, 2018 to November, 2018 and included all patients (N=50) above eighteen years of age who were diagnosed on admission with microcytic hypochromic or normocytic normochromic anaemia. Following detailed history, general examination and basic haematological investigations like complete blood count, haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, etc., statistical analysis of the data was performed.Results: In the present study, it was found that maximum number of patients belonged to a younger age group (mean=36.82 years) with a majority being females (74%). Most common presenting complaint was weakness seen in 96% cases while the commonest clinical finding was pallor present in 100% cases followed by koilonychia in 32%. The most common cause of iron deficiency anaemia was nutritional seen in 60% patients.Conclusions: Generalised weakness, breathlessness, and pedal edema were the commonest presenting complaints in our study while pallor, koilonychia, and pedal edema were the most common clinical findings. Maximum number of patients had IDA due to a nutritional cause. Chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, and menorrhagia are other causes of IDA. Amongst addicted, alcohol addiction seen in most cases.

Towards a peripatetic practice: negotiating journey through painting investigates painting as a way of comprehending lived experience of travel. The project develops from curiosity about journeys and their potential for bringing the artist into encounters with the world, and proximate to its issues and concerns. Aims of the project focused on peripatetic practice as a means of redirecting a personal experience of rootlessness towards connecting with others, and considering and communicating the complexity of cross-cultural experience through painting. Objectives as such were to investigate through practice the function and form of peripatetic painting, and to document this through film and writing. The study acknowledges travel as an ancient way of knowing the world and takes inspiration from the paradigm of the nomadic storyteller as exemplified in the Bengali tradition of Patuya Sangit (scroll performance). With a sense of the capacity for painting to provide spaces of connection and empathy, the study draws on the writing of John Berger and Suzi Gablik, exploring a confluence of ideas about the evolving social role of the artist. Key influences are historic and contemporary peripatetic creative practices, which include the writer Freya Stark, the colonial painter William Simpson, and the artists Phil Smith and John Wolseley. The project also incorporates methodological approaches which borrow from anthropology, situating the artist as observer, participant, and ultimately, agent. Practice in this context is immersive, and takes on social, interactive dimensions for which making paintings becomes a means of knowing and questioning the nature of cross-cultural experience. Explorations took the form of increasingly immersive journeys in Australia, India and Pakistan and a series of paintings utilising extended scroll formats with additional outcomes of documentary films. As the key research spaces for practice-led research, the scroll paintings employ pencil, collage, watercolour and oil, and a metaphoric fusion of styles and techniques of painting and drawing, notably Persian miniature and life portraiture as a means of accounting for and sharing the abiding experiences and encounters yielded through travel.

Il presente elaborato esamina la trasformazione degli assetti istituzionali adottati dalle accademie letterarie milanesi nell’arco cronologico racchiuso fra la comparsa delle adunanze tra le mura cittadine e l’avvicendamento della dinastia regnante conseguente al trattato di Utrecht. La ricostruzione della fisionomia assunta dal fenomeno associativo nel periodo considerato è compiuta attraverso l’individuazione delle personalità che alimentarono gli sforzi eruditi, il riconoscimento dei gruppi che componevano la costellazione delle élite intellettuali attive nella compagine urbana, la contestualizzazione dei progetti culturali, nonché delle frizioni politiche, poste a sostrato delle iniziative intraprese e la definizione dei tratti spiccatamente ambrosiani progressivamente stratificatisi nei recinti accademici. La proposta esegetica dei componimenti ad opera dall’Accademia della Val di Blenio, mossa a partire dai rilievi storici effettuati intorno alla parabola bio-bibliografica del Facchino Cosme de Aldana, precede lo studio documentario relativo alle fondazioni accademiche occorse nei centri scolastici cittadini, frutto della sinergia tra la curia arcivescovile, gli ordini religiosi coinvolti nell’educazione dei giovani e gli organi di rappresentanza patrizia milanesi. I rinvenimenti archivistici relativi alle riunioni degli Inquieti introducono quindi alla disamina del percorso di consolidamento di un “sistema di virtù”, metronomo delle radunanze barocche, nella sua declinazione ambrosiana, che entrerà in crisi allo scadere del XVII secolo.By adopting a long-term period chronological perspective, this research analyses the institutional frameworks’ development of Milanese literary academies between their appearance in the city area and the beginning of Austrian government’s jurisdiction after the Peace of Utrecht. Key objectives of the phenomenon’s historical reconstruction are: the identification of patrons who promoted the academies’ dissemination; the description of associational networks made up by different intellectual elite groups operating in Milan; the contextualization of cultural projects - and resulting under covered political tensions - that influenced the academical pattern’s expansion process; finally, the gradual constitution of a peculiar Ambrosian identity related with this associations’ typology. The exegesis of the “Badia della Val di Blenio” academy’s literary production, deduced by the historical examine of the “Facchino” Cosme de Aldana’s bio-bibliographical experience, introduces the enquiry on students’ academical foundations, which were the result of the cooperation between the archiepiscopal curia, religious orders involved in the educational programs and representative bodies of Milanese patricians. Archival discoveries on Inquieti’s meetings contribute in depicting the progressive composition of a coherent Ambrosian “system of virtues” (the baroque reference point for academical activities), that got into a substantial crisis at the end of seventeenth century.

This article looks at the poetry of the Black Arts Movement as a response to the first avant-garde’s poetry of experimentation. It analyses how Amiri Baraka and Gwendolyn Brooks borrow from these poetic gestures, through collage, in order to respond poetically as well as politically to the urgency of the fight for Civil Rights. These responses rely on loudness and dissonance, adopting aesthetic codes from the first avant-garde in order to re-signify them with political force. At stake for these poets is the difficulty of writing politically forceful poetry while remaining experimental. In doing so, they reflect on their position as African-American poets in relation to the white avant-garde canon.

Abstract Francis Barnham participated in uncounted controversies of personality, politics, and property. Most he adjudicated in his public roles: churchwarden in the parish of St Mildred Poultry, member of the Drapers ’ Court of Assistants, governor of the Bridewell and St Thomas ’s Hospital, alderman of the City of London, and Sheriff. But, as seems to have been impossible to avoid in the Tudor and Stuart years, he also had extensive private experience of ‘variances ’, disputes, and allegations. There were the 1554 quarrel with William Beswicke over a jeweled pendant, a 1556 argument with former apprentice John Kydd, a 1560 complaint filed against clothworker Henry Broune, and the 1568 petition of Robert Collet about the ‘round compassed window ’ in St Clement ’s Lane. To none of these was as much jeopardy attached as a 1574 accusation that he had violated the Statute against Usury. As Alderman, Barnham was one of the Queen ’s agents for the governance of the city; he had been installed as Sheriff before others of her delegates for order in the country, the Barons of the Exchequer; now, he came before the Exchequer charged with malfeasance, and his private business practices were opened to public scrutiny.

Abstract Despite widespread targeted efforts at the pre-college level to recruit greater numbers of females and minorities for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), fewer than 9% of today’s mechanical engineers are female and underrepresented minorities remain under 10%. There is a disproportionately high attrition rate of females and minorities from engineering programs and professions. Female and underrepresented minority mechanical engineering students are discouraged by factors involving: 1) Wider cultural norms and biases (societally pervasive ideas and often discriminatory practices); 2) Social-structural factors that result in differential engineering college preparedness; and 3) Organizational norms and biases within mechanical engineering. At the intersection of these forces is an individual who enters a career to make a difference, but whose fundamental social responsibility goals and leanings are frustrated. This culture alienates many students at a time when prominent engineering organizations like ABET call for greater diversity, empathy and social responsibility. Undergraduates in ten engineering programs at the Milwaukee School of Engineering completed a survey consisting of developed measures of “STEMpathy” (empathy in STEM); equitable treatment across commonly known bases for discrimination; a measure of personal empathy based on Baron-Cohen’s systemizing-empathizing dichotomy; a developed instrument to measure likelihood of persistence; and qualitative questions on reasons for career choice and discriminatory experiences in college. Multiple linear regression analysis supported the hypothesis that persistence likelihood is a function of program STEMpathy and departmental fairness (lack of discrimination) and showed a moderating effect of empathy on program fairness/discrimination. Mechanical engineering was distinguished by low STEMpathy and unique challenges surrounding student persistence.

More than half of U.S. students entering college are female, but female students are still largely absent from engineering fields. The persistent absence of females in engineering may owe itself, at least in part, to a fundamental difference in cognitive approaches between males and females. Although there is a significant amount of cross-over, males are more likely than females to have a systemizing brain, which is associated with a drive to understand how the world works through the identification and creation of patterns and rules. Females are more likely to be born with an empathizing style, which lends itself to a natural aptitude for identifying others’ thoughts and emotions. This systemizing-empathizing dichotomy is based on the work of Simon Baron-Cohen at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Engineering programs are geared toward those with a higher SQ (systemizing quotient). This paper reviews relevant research on how systemizing-empathizing (S-E) theory applies to engineering education and examines current research on the reasons behind the dearth of females in engineering, finding that the contemporary engineering culture in college is also characterized by subtle forms of discrimination that systematically direct women away from engineering. Finally, some recommendations are made for how engineering programs might engage a broader base of students.

We are nowadays used to access tens of links to get the information or to ask for information. Most of the times, during a talk, we bring in the discussion webpage (link) where we can access a document, a tutorial, etc. In college, we truly assault students numerous times with tens of online pages, information useful to them and which they should access. On a webpage, a link can be clicked to visit another website, to send a message, to view a picture or to download a movie. But, in the classroom, these links are very difficult to give to them since, most of the times, they are very long and complex strings of character combinations. In order to facilitate the access to information, to access an internet address more easily and not only, the QR code were created. Thanks to the new technologies, anyone carrying a smartphone, iPod, or tablet device can scan the square barcode. The QR codes are more and more popular thanks to their capacity of fast reading and holding vast amounts of information. Are the QR codes just as popular in training/education, as well? In the first part of the paper, we present the results of studies on the extent to which the UPB professors use these codes in their daily activities and in the didactic activity. Duarte. In our research we make inquiries into the action of cultural mediation proposed and done by the Museu de Arte de Sao Paolo – MASP during the COVID-19 pandemic. In such a way specially, though, on the Instagram Social Media this Museum interchanged and instigated your audience to learn, to interact and to produce with art objects from your collection. Therefore, through the educational strategies we consider Triangular Approach and Online Educational Museum foundation of your path. As mentioned previously the way to introduce the reader, in our research we investigated the online educational actions did it by the Museu de Arte de Sao Paolo MASP, at the moment of COVID-19 pandemic. The investigation pursues and explores the educational strategies elaborated, designed and done by the MASP and your team for your audience in the virtual place, i.e, the online mode. While theories reference, our base, it is three fundamental axis: Educational Theory of Paulo Freire(Educator and Brazilian Philosopher), and the influence into the Brazilian Educational Museum, Triangular Approach used firstly by Ana Mae Barbosa (educator, pioneer in art-education because of her systematization of the Triangular Approach) and the Greimassian’s Semiotic Theory (Research line of Semiotic study the relation among plans of text circumscribed in relationship through the languages, created by Algirdas Julien Greimas, this theory made possible the investigation of the texts). Combined, brings to light the analysis of the production of the sense from the MASP’s audience. Through of the discourses and texts produced by the Museum Educational team, mediated for Cultural Mediation in a constant dialogue with the concept of Online Educational Museum (OEM) proposed by the Researcher Frieda Marti (Ph.D from the Program of Post-Graduation Education College in the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro - PROPED/UERJ). In this logic, the methodological procedure of the research is based on theory approach and bibliography (theoretical instrumentalisation of concepts for the research) and the analytics investigation in a study case (the analysis of discourses of Online Cultural Mediation from MASP during the pandemic). Our highlight, our general objective, is set a relation between educational actions and the methodologic strategies in Online Cultural Mediation developed by MASP, mediated by analysis of the production made for the audience in this process, assumed the action in the virtual as a contribution for the Brazilian Educational Museum, in context of the pandemic and social isolation – from March 2020 to August 2021. For this purpose, our research problem is to think of the Educational Museum in the pandemic. Indeed our path is in the direction to enrich the Educational Museum, therefore one of the main objectives is reflecting and creating a healthy environment to debate the Educational Museum in the context of pandemic and social isolation in Brazil.

House flies (Muscadomestica) are global pests of animal agriculture, causing major annoyance, carrying pathogens among production facilities and humans and thus have profound impacts on animal comfort and productivity. Successful fly control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that includes elements of manure management, mass trapping, biological control, and selective insecticide use. Insecticidal control of house flies has become increasingly difficult due to the rapidity with which resistance develops, even to new active ingredients. Global climate change poses additional challenges, as the efficacy of natural enemies is uncertain under the higher temperatures that are predicted to become more commonplace in the future. The two major objectives of this research project were: 1) to develop a cost-effective autodissemination application method of Pyriproxifen (PPF), an insect growth regulator, for controlling house flies; 2) to study the effect of increasing temperatures on the interactions between house flies and their principal natural enemies. First, we collected several wild house fly populations in both countries and established that most of them are susceptible to PPF, although one population in each country showed initial signs of PPF-resistance. An important finding is that the efficacy of PPF is substantially reduced when applied in cows’ manure. We also found that PPF is compatible with several common species of parasitoids that attack the house fly, thus PPF can be used in IPM programs. Next, we tried to develop “baited stations” in which house flies will collect PPF on their bodies and then deliver and deposit it in their oviposition sites (= autodissemination). The concept showed potential in lab experiments and in outdoor cages trials, but under field conditions the station models we tested were not effective enough. We thus tested a somewhat different approach – to actively release a small proportion of PPF-treated flies. This approach showed positive results in laboratory experiments and awaits further field experiments. On the second topic, we performed two experimental sets: 1) we collected house flies and their parasitoids from hot temperature and mild temperature areas in both countries and, by measuring some fitness parameters we tested whether the ones collected from hot areas are better adapted to BARD Report - Project 4701 Page 2 of 16 heat. The results showed very little differences between the populations, both of flies and parasitoids. 2) A “fast evolution” experiment, in which we reared house flies for 20 generations under increasing temperatures. Also here, we found no evidence for heat adaptation. In summary, pyriproxyfen proved to be a highly effective insect growth regulator for house flies that is compatible with it’s natural enemies. Although our autodissemination stations yielded disappointing results, we documented the proportion of flies in a population that must be exposed to PPF to achieve effective fly control. Both the flies and their principal parasitoids show no evidence for local adaptation to high temperatures. This is an encouraging finding for biological control, as our hypothesis was that the fly would be adapting faster to high temperatures than the parasitoids. BARD Report - Project 4701 Page 3 of 16

In broilers, the immediate post-hatch handling period exposes chicks to cold or hot thermal stress, with potentially harmful consequences to product quantity and quality that could threaten poultry meat marketability as a healthy, low-fat food. This lower performance includes adverse effects on muscle growth and damage to muscle structure (e.g., less protein and more fat deposition). A leading candidate for mediating the effects of thermal stress on muscle growth and development is a unique group of skeletal muscle cells known as adult myoblasts (satellite cells). Satellite cells are multipotential stem cells that can be stimulated to follow other developmental pathways, especially adipogenesis in lieu of muscle formation. They are most active during the first week of age in broilers and have been shown to be sensitive to environmental conditions and nutritional status. The hypothesis of the present study was that immediate post-hatch thermal stress would harm broiler growth and performance. In particular, growth characteristics and gene expression of muscle progenitor cells (i.e., satellite cells) will be affected, leading to increased fat deposition, resulting in long-term changes in muscle structure and a reduction in meat yield. The in vitro studies on cultured satellite cells derived from different muscle, have demonstrated that, anaerobic pectoralis major satellite cells are more predisposed to adipogenic conversion and more sensitive during myogenic proliferation and differentiation than aerobic biceps femoris cells when challenged to both hot and cold thermal stress. These results corroborated the in vivo studies, establishing that chronic heat exposure of broiler chicks at their first two week of life leads to impaired myogenicity of the satellite cells, and increased fat deposition in the muscle. Moreover, chronic exposure of chicks to inaccurate temperature, in particular to heat vs. cold, during their early posthatch periods has long-term effects of BW, absolute muscle growth and muscle morphology and meat quality. The latter is manifested by higher lipid and collagen deposition and may lead to the white striping occurrence. The results of this study emphasize the high sensitivity of muscle progenitor cells in the early posthatch period at a time when they are highly active and therefore the importance of rearing broiler chicks under accurate ambient temperatures. From an agricultural point of view, this research clearly demonstrates the immediate and long-term adverse effects on broiler muscling and fat formation due to chronic exposure to hot stress vs. cold temperatures at early age posthatch. These findings will aid in developing management strategies to improve broiler performance in Israel and the USA. BARD Report - Project4592 Page 2 of 29
