Abstract:
Abstract In 1883 five Brazilian Botocudos were exhibited at Piccadilly Hall, London's popular theatre. This exhibition aimed to replicate in Europe the success achieved by the display of seven Botocudos, held the previous year by the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro at the Brazilian Anthropological Exhibition. Measured and studied by scientists from the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, the Botocudos performed daily for the public in London, Manchester, and Sheffield, until they were sold to P.T. Barnum, joining the US tour of the Grand Ethnological Congress of the Bailey and Barnum Circus. This article emphasises the ambivalent trajectory between science and spectacle in these three different exhibition formats and versions. Illustrations, posters, photographs and newspaper reports are relied on as research sources.

Abstract:
Virtually every city in the United States now has a Civic Center. In large cities, this site functions variously as a convention center, a hockey rink, and the locale for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus. In smaller cities, it frequently serves as a venue for performance. Civic Centers host touring productions of Broadway shows, national dance companies, and local symphonies and operas. In addition to providing local access to a variety of performance forms, a city's Civic Center also signifies “the arts” and so implies the city's commitment to art and performance.

Abstract:

Australian Journal of French Studies: Volume 59, Issue 2 59, no. 2 (April 1, 2022): 185–97. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/ajfs.2022.15.

Abstract:
In the context of recent African historical novels that aim to rehabilitate their protagonists through reference to the archives as they appear implicitly, both in the paratext and in the story itself, this article offers a reading of the novel Le Miraculé de Saint-Pierre by Gaston-Paul Effa (2017). This polyphonic novel traces the life of Louis-Auguste Cyparis, allegedly the only survivor of the eruption of the Montagne Pelée in 1902. In this novel, the third-person narrative of Cyparis, which unfolds in three stages (Martinique, the Barnum & Bailey circus and Panama), is interspersed by a conversation between Effa himself as a character and a reader, who could be Cyparis’s great-granddaughter. The validity of written sources is therefore questioned in favour of private remembrance, transmitted from generation to generation. By analysing the thematic of meeting or appointment, this reflection will illustrate the ethical significance of the novel, by combining the approaches of Emmanuel Levinas on the encounter with the Other and of Jacques Derrida on the archive, coalescing them in a postcolonial worldview.

Holmes, Kate. "Marketing Circus through Personalization: Class and the Celebrity Images of John Ringling and Bertram Mills." New Theatre Quarterly 34, no. 3 (July 13, 2018): 203–15. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0266464x18000209.

Abstract:
Marketing strategies today often rely on creating an emotional connection to the brand through personalizing or humanizing the business. This article explores how both the American Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey and the British Bertram Mills Circus used this strategy in the early twentieth century to encourage audiences to attend their circus rather than any other. John Ringling and Bertram Mills may best be remembered for totemic images but their celebrity was constructed through a reiterative performance process. In this article Kate Holmes examines the shifts in their representation performed in press, publicity, and anecdote to explore how each iteration of their public identity functioned to publicize their respective circuses at significant points. She also explores how these circus celebrity identities, focused on achieving financial success for a commercial enterprise, activated and perpetuated national self-identities linked to class. Kate Holmes, who has previous experience as a qualified marketer, recently completed a PhD in Drama at the University of Exeter. Her research on circus performance has been published in Early Popular Visual Culture and is forthcoming in Stage Women, a collection of essays on early twentieth-century female performers.

Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association 55, no. 4 (July 1, 2019): 167–77. http://dx.doi.org/10.5326/jaaha-ms-6711.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Movement of food material in the esophagus during upright feeding in dogs with megaesophagus (ME) is poorly characterized. A standardized contrast videofluoroscopy technique was used to evaluate esophageal transit characteristics in dogs with ME while in an upright position. Twelve dogs with ME (congenital, acquired idiopathic, or secondary to myasthenia gravis) were placed in an upright position using Bailey chairs and given liquid barium, canned food meatballs, and their normal diet consistency if different than meatballs. Passage of ingesta was videofluoroscopically evaluated by direct observation and change in ingesta area as determined by manual tracing or barium column product calculations. Significant individual variation was seen. Complete esophageal clearance of liquid was seen in four dogs, and complete clearance of meatballs in three dogs, with a median time of 5 min for both. Two of seven dogs fed a slurry diet had complete clearance by 10 min. No significant difference was found between area calculated via tracing or barium column product. Based on imaging results, alterations in food consistency, duration upright, or medication were recommended for nine dogs. In dogs with ME accustomed to a Bailey chair, contrast videofluoroscopy was technically straightforward and allowed for more specific physician-guided management recommendations.
