Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted in the maize-growing region on heavy gleic fluvisol from 1974 to 2000. Three variants of straw management (straw harvested, incorporated into soil and burned), two variants of soil tillage (conventional plough tillage to 0.22 m, shallow disc tillage to 0.12&ndash;0.15 m) and three variants of fertilization (30, 60 and 90 kg N.ha&ndash;1) were studied. After conventional tillage, the highest yield was obtained in the variant with burned straw (5.50 t.ha&ndash;1), followed by the variant with straw incorporated into soil (5.40 t.ha&ndash;1) and the lowest after harvested straw (5.01 t.ha&ndash;1). At shallow tillage, lower yields were assessed in all variants of straw management in comparison with conventional tillage (after straw burning 5.07 t.ha&ndash;1, incorporation into soil 4.66 t.ha&ndash;1 and harvest 4.54 t.ha&ndash;1). The ranking of variants was identical to that in inversion tillage; however, the yield increased more after straw burning in comparison with its incorporation into soil. Yields increased regularly along with increasing rates of nitrogen. If long-term effects of straw incorporation on yields and yield trends were evaluated (in comparison with straw harvest), statistically significant decrease in yields was assessed after shallow in contrast with increase in yields after deeper straw incorporation.

Abstract:
Seed predation can be exploited as a mean of natural weed control. Field experiments were conducted in 2007 in four barely fields in Mashhad, NE of Iran to determine the effects of seed covering tissues, seed distribution patterns and interactions between seed density and background seed density on postdispersal seed predation. Five weed species (Avena ludoviciana, Hordeum spontaneum, Sinapis arvensis, Rumex obtusifolius and Rapistrum rugosum), three seed densities (50, 100 and 150 seed dish-1), two background seed densities (with and without), three distribution patterns (random, even, and aggregate), and two level of seed covering tissues (with and without) were arrange in a factorial randomized complete block design. Seed covering tissues had significant negative effect on predation and the most its effect was observed for H. spontaneum. Seed predation was also affected by seed distribution patterns. The highest and lowest seed predations of all species were observed from aggregate and random treatments respectively. The interaction between density and background seed density affected seed predation. Results show that seed predation can play an important role in decreasing the weed seeds on the soil surface and thus, in soil seed bank. Therefore, seed predation could be considered as a control technique in integrated weed management.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to document at the firm-specific level whether firms manage earnings up or down to barely miss or meet/beat three common earnings threshold targets, namely, analysts’ forecasts (AFs), last year’s earnings and zero earnings, and whether the market rewards or punishes up versus down earnings management. Design/methodology/approach The authors assign each firm to its most likely earnings target using an algorithm that reflects management’s economic incentives to manage earnings. The authors place reported (managed) earnings in standard width intervals surrounding the earnings target. Jacob and Jorgensen’s (2007) proxy for unmanaged earnings is also placed into the intervals. Thus, a firm with unmanaged earnings in the interval just below the target and reported earnings in the interval just above the target would be deemed to have managed earnings up. The authors also document whether the market rewarded or punished the earnings management strategy with three-day cumulative abnormal returns. Findings The authors find that most firms which barely meet/beat their target did so by managing earnings up. The market rewarded this earnings management strategy. The market did not, however, reward firms that managed earnings down (i.e. created a cookie jar of reserves) to barely meet/beat their target. Thus, the meet/beat premium does not apply to all firms. The authors’ explanation is that most earnings targets are set by AFs; that these are usually the highest of the three targets; and that these are, therefore, considered to be “good” firms by the market because they have the ability to find that extra penny to meet/beat the target. Firms that were assigned to the last year’s earnings and/or zero earnings thresholds are not as “good” because they usually do not target the highest threshold and must manage earnings down, as they are more likely to have to reverse income-increasing accruals booked during interim quarters. Research limitations/implications The primary limitation in this study is the algorithm used to assign firms to their threshold target. It is ad hoc in nature, but relies on reasonable assumptions about the management’s incentives to manage earnings. Practical implications This study has practical implications because investors and regulators can adopt this methodology to identify potential candidates for earnings management that would allow further insight into accounting and reporting practices. This methodology may also be useful to the auditor who wants to understand the tendencies of a new client. It may also be a useful tool for framing auditing hypotheses in a way that would be appropriate for clients who manage earnings. Originality/value This paper documents for the first time at the firm-specific level the market reaction to upward versus downward earnings management designed to barely meet/beat the earnings threshold. It also documents the frequency with which firms target the three earnings thresholds and the frequency with which firms miss or meet/beat their threshold.

Abstract:
Clinicians and support staff are faced with increasingly complex computer applications. This complexity stems partly from the integration of heterogeneous systems ranging from computerized patient records to theatre management and dosage planning applications, and also from the increased functionality offered by the new generation of IT systems. Many members of clinical staff are bewildered by the vast array of configuration options and operating modes supported by computer based systems, while manufacturers often feel compelled to offer more and more software features to retain market position. These factors combine to create “usability” problems that have had a direct impact on patient outcomes as well as a number of indirect effects—for example, the costs of replacing and upgrading inadequate computer systems carry significant opportunity costs in terms of services that might otherwise have been funded. In the future we need to educate staff to reject substandard computer interfaces early in the acquisition process; encourage the use of human computer interaction techniques in health care; and train staff to recognize the dangers of “working around” poor interface design.

Abstract:
In Kenya, micro finance institutions have continued to grow though most of them continue to face serious financial difficulties and poor performance. The micro finance institutions have barely been able to grow the customer base and have faced stiff competition from other players in the financial sector. The firms have experienced internal inefficiencies in customer focus as the financial sector transforms powered by innovations with a change customer demand. While studies indicate that total quality management is important for businesses, there still exists a dearth of information on its effect on the organizational performance of deposit taking microfinance institutions in Nyandarua County. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The target population comprised 86 managers of 11 micro finance institutions in Nyandarua County, Kenya. A census approach was adopted. Primary data was collected through semi structured questionnaire and administered through the drop and pick method. Secondary data was extracted from the managements and financial reports and corporate handbooks. The study findings indicate that all the four Total Quality Managements practices (management commitment, customer focus, employee engagement and continuous improvement) affected the performance of micro finance institutions in Nyandarua County. Continuous improvement had a significant effect on the micro finance institutions performance. However, the effect of management commitment, customer focus and employee engagement on micro finance institution performance were lowly rated. The study thus concluded that among the Total Quality Management practices under considerations, continuous improvement had the most significant effect on the performance of the micro finance institutions in Nyandarua County. The study recommended that the micro finance institutions should re-evaluate the policies for quality improvements to ensure that management is fully supported to influence desired total quality. Clear guidelines on quality goals achievement should be fully disseminated to the managers to ensure that the right strategies are adopted and implemented.

ABSTRACT: Internal auditors perform work that is relevant to their host entities' financial reporting processes; yet, little research attention has focused on the effects of internal auditing on companies' external financial reporting. Using a unique and previously unavailable data set, we investigate the relation between internal audit function (IAF) quality and earnings management. We measure IAF quality using a composite measure comprising six individual components of IAF quality based on SAS No. 65, which guides external auditors in assessing the quality of an IAF with respect to its role in financial reporting. Earnings management is measured using two separate proxies: (1) abnormal accruals and (2) the propensity to meet or barely beat analysts' earnings forecasts. We find evidence that IAF quality is associated with a moderation in the level of earnings management as measured by both proxies.

I recently read a paper about Total Quality Management (TQM). In seven pages of text the term "Total Quality Management" or the acronym "TQM" was repeated 152 times. In addition, the author employed repeated usage of the word "quality," by itself or in terms that border upon becoming cliches. Further, the paper described a dedicated infrastructure piled on a regular organization in the form of a special office and various committees. Barely afloat amid the promotion of TQM, per se, was the simple truth, "quality improvement comes from process improvement."

Abstract:
In 1998&ndash;2000, in a&nbsp;multi-factorial field experiment established by the method of split blocks and subplots, we studied the effect of three systems of beet tops management, two sowing rates and two levels of N fertilization and the effect of interactions of the factors on production and qualitative indicators of spring barley varieties Amulet and Kompakt. The evaluation shows the dominant effect of the particular year on the variability of all characters. The proportion of the effect of the year on the variability of characters ranged from 2.1 (number of plants per m2) to 80.1% (yield). The variability of quality parameters was also considerably affected by the genetic factor of the variety (grain over2.5 mmsieve 40.4%, TGW 20.5%). The level of characters was greatly variable in relation to the course of climatic conditions of the year. The highest grain yield was achieved in 1999 (7.21 t/ha), the lowest one in 2000 (5.25 t/ha). The best quality parameters were shown by grain from the 1998 harvest (yield 6.20 t/ha) with significantly highest TGW (47.76 g), a&nbsp;high proportion of grain over2.5 mmsieve (92.01%, 5.54 t/ha) and a&nbsp;favourable content of N substances in the grain (10.60%). Ploughed down beet tops supported the creation of the yield, the average differences between variants were, however, minimal being heavily affected by the course of weather in particular years. More favourable conditions for the creation of the yield (6.17 t/ha) and for the formation of mechanical properties of the spring barley grain (TGW45.55 g, grain over2.5 mmsieve 85.86%) were produced by variants with late ploughing down beet tops, the smallest accumulation of N substances occurred in variants with harvested beet tops (11.83%). Sowing rate significantly affected values of all studied characters. Variants sown 4.5 MGS (6.27 t/ha) gave higher average grain yields, grain of better quality was obtained from the stands sown 3.5 MGS (TGW45.22 g, grain over 2.5 sieve 84.41%, N substances 11.93%). Between particular varieties, significant differences were found both in the economic yield and the grain quality. The Kompakt variety showed on average 4.7% higher yield (6.37 t/ha) than the Amulet variety which, however, reached the higher average TGW values as well as the proportion of grain over2.5 mmsieve (45.87 g, 88.24%). The grain quality of the Amulet variety was negatively affected by the increased accumulation of N substances in the grain (12.49%). As compared with control, N fertilization at the rate of 30 kg/ha showed significant increase in the yield in 1998 only (by 7.5%) while in other years, an increase in the yield was not noticed. In all years under investigation, the TGW values and the proportion of grain over2.5 mmsieve decreased and the content of N substances in grain increased after application of N at the rate of 30 kg/ha.

Abstract:
Many factors, most notably climate, soil, genotype and fertilising, can influence barley grain composition and its nutritive value. The aim of the research was to evaluate the impact of mineral N rate in different management systems in the static long-term experiment with three years field rotation of grain maize, wheat and barley on the chemical composition of winter barley and its nutritive value for ruminants. Crude protein content and metabolizable crude protein content were increasing with increased mineral N rates. Higher yield meant lower crude protein and metabolizable crude protein content in all mineral N rates. The average crude protein content of barley grain, presented in DLG tables (1997), which is 12.4%, was in MM and SM reached by fertilising rate 110 kg N/ha. A&nbsp;significant impact of mineral N fertilising on crude ash, ether extract and crude fibre content could not be confirmed, nitrogen-free extract content was decreasing with increased mineral N rates. A&nbsp;significant impact of the management system on the Weende analysis parameters, net energy for lactation, metabolizable energy and metabolizable crude protein could not be confirmed. At both analyses a&nbsp;significant impact of the season was confirmed on crude protein content and nitrogen-free extract content. Although the protein content was increasing with increased mineral N rate from 9.2&ndash;14.2% (for 35%) ME content and NEL content did not significantly differ considering mineral N rate; ME/ha&nbsp;and NEL/ha&nbsp;increasing with increased mineral N rates was the result of the yield increasing with increased mineral N rates.

AbstractMalignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a common and challenging problem. Patients affected by MPE have a poor prognosis and suffer from breathlessness and impaired quality of life. The management of MPE has barely changed for many decades; however, recent research has driven new paradigms in the diagnosis and treatment of MPE and stimulated novel concepts that are being evaluated in many ongoing studies. This review provides an overview of recent advances in the diagnosis of MPE, including new cytopathology and imaging techniques, and the landmark studies that provide a solid evidence base to support the use of indwelling pleural catheters as first-line treatment in MPE. Lingering management dilemmas, including optimal chest drainage tube and role of surgery in MPE, and key knowledge gaps that are the focus of ongoing research are also highlighted.

Abstract:
Earnings management has received considerable attention as numerous papers were investigated different hypotheses. However, there is still no consensus on how efficiently detect and measure earnings managements. Nevertheless, most authors use methodology based on accruals, sophisticated models that attempt to separate total accruals into discretionary and nondiscretionary components. We may find wide range of use of alternative models to measure earnings management. Nevertheless, the researchers typically used five the most popular models: the Jones (1991) model, the modified Jones model (Dechow, Sloan, and Sweeney, 1995), Teoh, Welch and Wong (1998) model, Kasznik (1999) model and Kothari et al. (2005) model. However, it is confirmed that the environment where the company is operating influences on the earnings management. Therefore, we focus our study on the growing market of the developing European countries. In particular, our analysis comprises four different and independent samples from emerging Eastern European countries: Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, since earnings management in Eastern European countries is still barely explored. Consequently, our objective is to evaluate the ability of the existing models on earnings management for the environment of countries from the East of Europe. Our results confirm that the Jones (1991), Shivakumar (1996), Kasznik (1999) and Yoon and Miller model (2002) offers the most reliable results for detecting earnings management in emerging Eastern European post-communism economic environment. Additionally, based on broad analyses the results indicate that there is no superiority of the cross-sectional models vis-à-vis their time-series counterparts. Both methodologies are consistent in detecting earnings management for Eastern European companies. Therefore, we verified the importance of the previous evaluation of the ability of each model for detecting earnings management before its application. It is because each economic environment has different peculiarities and circumstances, as observed in case of our developing European countries.

Abstract:
The paper explores the status quo of strategic human resource management and its perceived role to alleviate inefficient management in Uganda public universities. A close-ended questionnaire was administered to top and middle level university managers (n = 101) to establish the status quo of strategic human resource management practices and the perceived role it can play to alleviate inefficient management at Makerere and Kyambogo. The results of the study indicate that strategic human resource management practices are barely practiced in Uganda public universities. The results also reveal that top and middle level managers have a strong conviction that integration of strategic human resource management practices can alleviate inefficient management in Uganda public universities. The paper concludes that due to rapid changes emanating from globalisation, knowledge based economy, technological revolution and reduced funding of higher education from governments, public universities in Uganda need to adopt strategic human resource management to improve their efficiency

Abstract:
The rapid increase in data volumes in companies has meant that momentous and comprehensive information gathering is barely possible by manual means. Business intelligence solutions can help here. They provide tools with appropriate technologies to assist with the collection, integration, storage, editing, and analysis of existing data. While almost only large companies were interested in this topic a few years ago, it has meanwhile also become necessary for start-up companies, and so the market for business intelligence has been growing for years. This article focuses on the general potentials of using BI in start-ups. First, will be examined which providers of BI solutions that are suitable for start-ups and what opportunities exist for implementing BI systems in start-ups. Then it will be shown to what extent BI has prevailed in start-ups, in which areas the techniques of BI are used in start-ups and what purpose BI has in start-ups. Finally, the success factors for BI projects in start-ups are considered.

Abstract:
AbstractFor a long time, host cell death during parasitic infection has been considered a reflection of tissue damage, and often associated with disease pathogenesis. However, during their evolution, protozoan and helminth parasites have developed strategies to interfere with cell death so as to spread and survive in the infected host, thereby ascribing a more intriguing role to infection-associated cell death. In this review, we examine the mechanisms used by intracellular and extracellular parasites to respectively inhibit or trigger programmed cell death. We further dissect the role of the prototypical “eat-me signal” phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) which, by being exposed on the cell surface of damaged host cells as well as on some viable parasites via a process of apoptotic mimicry, leads to their recognition and up-take by the neighboring phagocytes. Although barely dissected so far, the engagement of different PtdSer receptors on macrophages, by shaping the host immune response, affects the overall infection outcome in models of both protozoan and helminth infections. In this scenario, further understanding of the molecular and cellular regulation of the PtdSer exposing cell-macrophage interaction might allow the identification of new therapeutic targets for the management of parasitic infection.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to look at three management research papers, which are placed in dialogue with Gilbert Simondon’s philosophy. Design/methodology/approach – Notable research articles are subjected to a thorough de-construction and re-construction process, as they are examined through the lens of Gilbert Simondon’s ontological and epistemological perspectives. Findings – Some solutions to epistemological antinomies underpinning management science are proposed, by relying on Simondonian paradigms. Research limitations/implications – This paper involved no direct field study. The transcendental status of Simondon’s propositions is briefly called into question but is not addressed per se. Social implications – Showing the fuzziness, not to say irrelevance, of efforts to make a strict demarcation between business and society, as illustrated by qualitative meta-analyses of management science cases. Originality/value – Simondon’s importance is barely beginning to be acknowledged in the field of Social and Management Science. This paper takes a step toward rectifying this oversight by providing scholars with an introduction to his main concepts and illustrates how they might be transposed into management science by subjecting management scholarly papers to his “experiments of thought” approach.

The recent chemotherapeutic approaches to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) management reached the limits, achieving overall survival rate of approximately 70 %. An intensification of chemotherapeutic regimens is barely possible due to high level of toxicity and risk of lifethreatening complications. The modernization of program therapy of AML involves the clinical application of achievements in molecular biology, immunology and cytogenetic of the tumor cell. The researches in fundamental oncology revealed the phases of leukemogenesis and defined selective ways of targeted therapy in the treatment of AML.

This article presents the results of an extensive study on cross-border/international acquisitions of European multinationals in the period 1976–2000. The most common motives for cross-border acquisitions are market entry, increase in scale and economies of skills. There is a manifest preference for the United States of America. As yet, the influence of the (integrated) European Union is barely noticed. Two important preconditions for cross-border acquisitions are a unique competence that makes a company stand out from the competition and deep financial pockets.

Abstract:
The prevalence of genital piercing among women is increasing. As the popularity increases, the number of complications from infection, injury, and retained jewelry is likely to rise. Techniques to remove embedded jewelry are not well described in the literature. The purpose of this report was to describe a case of a patient with a retained clitoral glans piercing, discuss a simple technique for outpatient removal, and review current evidence regarding associated risks of clitoral piercings. A 24-year-old female presented to the emergency department with an embedded clitoral glans piercing. Local anesthetic was injected into the periclitoral skin and a small superficial vertical incision was made to remove the ball of the retained barbell safely. In conclusion, among patients with retained genital piercing, outpatient removal of embedded jewelry is feasible. While the practice of female genital piercing is not regulated, piercing of the glans of the clitoris is associated with increased injury to the nerves and blood supply of the clitoris structures leading to future fibrosis and diminished function compared to piercing of the clitoral hood.

Abstract:
As is well known, Italy's very consistent buildings stock has become the major field for real estate investments and for the related projects and actions. It is a heritage that is often barely known and extremely complex, whose management has until now been addressed in a rather casual and uninformed manner, with unsatisfactory and sometimes disastrous outcomes. The situation is worse in the case of buildings of particular historical, artistic and architectural value so frequent within the heritage of our country.<br> This paper shows the findings of an ongoing research which is aimed at structuring the cognitive process and assessing enhancement and re-functionalisation scenarios of our historical and architectural heritage through the use and integration of information systems such as BIM and the GIS. The work led to the development of a workflow able to integrate the contribution of the HBIM and GIS methodologies in the structuring and management of a wide range of digital data and information useful for its management. The research, focused on “La Gran Torre di Oristano, is aimed at creating the best conditions for an integrated and multidisciplinary strategy of requalification and refunctionalisation of historical and architectural heritage.

Abstract:
Ampullary carcinomas (ACs) represent a rare entity, accounting for approximately 0.2% of all gastrointestinal solid tumors and 20% of all periampullary cancers (PACs). Unfortunately, few data are available regarding the optimal therapeutic strategy for ACs due to their rarity, and physicians frequently encounter significant difficulties in the management of these malignancies. In this review, we will provide an overview of current evidence on AC, especially focusing on biological features, histological characteristics, and available data guiding present and future therapeutic strategies for these rare, and still barely known, tumors.

Abstract:
Lung cancer (LC) is one of the most deadly cancers worldwide, with very low survival rates, mainly due to poor management, which has barely changed in recent years. Nanomedicines, especially gold nanomaterials, with their unique and size-dependent properties offer a potential solution to many challenges in the field. The versatility afforded by the shape, size, charge and surface chemistry of gold nanostructures allows them to be adapted for many applications in the diagnosis, treatment and imaging of LC. In this review, a survey of the most recent advances in the field is presented with an emphasis on the optical properties of gold nanoscale materials and their use in cancer management. Gold nanoparticle toxicology has also been a focus of interest for many years but the studies have also sometimes arrived at contradictory conclusions. To enable extrapolation and facilitate the development of medicines based on gold nanomaterials, it must be assumed that each design will have its own unique characteristics that require evaluation before translation to the clinic. Advances in the understanding and recognition of the molecular signatures of LC have aided the development of personalised medicines. Tailoring the treatment to each case should, ideally increase the survival outcomes as well as reduce medical costs. This review seeks to present the potential of gold nanomaterials in LC management and to provide a unified view, which will be of interest to those in the field as well as researchers considering entering this highly important area of research.

Abstract:
The employed energy management strategy plays an important role in energy saving performance and exhausted emission reduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). An application of dynamic programming for optimization of power allocation is implemented in this paper with certain driving cycle and a limited driving range. Considering the DP algorithm can barely be used in real-time control because of its huge computational task and the dependence ona prioridriving cycle, several online useful control rules are established based on the offline optimization results of DP. With the above efforts, an online energy management strategy is proposed finally. The presented energy management strategy concerns the prolongation of all-electric driving range as well as the energy saving performance. A simulation study is deployed to evaluate the control performance of the proposed energy management approach. All-electric range of the plug-in HEV can be prolonged by up to 2.86% for a certain driving condition. The energy saving performance is relative to the driving distance. The presented energy management strategy brings a little higher energy cost when driving distance is short, but for a long driving distance, it can reduce the energy consumption by up to 5.77% compared to the traditional CD-CS strategy.

Abstract:
Abstract The global arms control regime that began with the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (1963) appears to be collapsing rapidly, with many agreements now abandoned or barely enforced. This article analyzes some of the challenges to new negotiations on arms control based on developments in negotiation theory over the past 60 years. It focuses on the management of multilateral rather than bilateral negotiations, the need to focus on absolute rather than relative gains, the use of problem-solving techniques rather than traditional bargaining, the management of domestic opposition to arms control, the need for national leaders to become active proponents of new negotiations, and the need to focus on norms of cooperative security rather than engaging in arms races. It concludes that a necessary, if not sufficient, condition to save and rebuild the arms control regime is the adoption of more constructive approaches to negotiation on these vital issues.

Abstract:
France is perhaps the only country in the Western world which because of the predominance of class-struggle unionism has not developed a system of mutually binding collective bargaining. The Auroux Laws enacted under the presidency of Francois Mitterrand were chiefly designed to encourage workplace participation and contractual partnership between unions and management. This article examines their origins, rationale and short-term results to illustrate the dependency of legally-induced collective bargaining on the broader economic and political environment. Under depressive labour market and political conditions the reforms barely altered existing relationships. Their potentially integrative effects were vitiated by union weakness, radical opposition and the absence of material incentives for cooperation. While the reforms helped shift the focus of labour relations from the industry to the firm, it was a process dominated by management that left little room for collective participation or free and consensual bargaining.

Abstract:
Background:Hydatid cyst is zoonosis caused due to Echinococcus species mainly, Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis. It was first described by Hippocrates as “liver full of water”. In developing countries like India, Iran, China and Mediterranean countries it is still remains a major problem. It can involve any organ and can mimic almost any pathological condition. Methods: The present study was carried out from January 2014 to December 2015. Total 20 cases of liver hydatid operated laproscopically studied prospectively. Omentoplasty with external drainage was done as sole operative modality. Postoperative follow up was done on 2nd week, 1, 3 and 6 months. Results:Among the observed patients most common age group was 31-40 years (40%), with male predominance (60%). Abdominal pain was most presenting symptom (65%). Right lobe involved involved in 75% patients. Cysts are usually single (90%). Bleeding and contamination of peritoneal cavity with scolices was main intra-operative complication (5% each). Mean operative time was 99.95 minutes. In post-operative period biliary leak was major complication (10%). Cosmetic results were good with barely visible scar (90%).Conclusions:Surgery is the gold standard treatment for hydatid liver and laproscopic technique is gaining more and more importance with advantage of being minimal invasive and less complications with better patient satisfaction.
