Full textThe cathode, located at the bottom of a Hall-Héroult cell, is responsible for nearly 10 % of the total cell voltage drop. Poor contact between the carbon block and the cast-iron layer surrounding the collector bars increase energy losses in the form of Joule heating. In addition, a non-uniform current density distribution inside the cell results in premature erosion of the carbon block extremities, limiting the cell’s life expectancy. This project aims to reduce the voltage drop and to improve the current density uniformity in the cathode assembly by improving the contact between the collector bars and the carbon block. To do so, a new cathode design using cylindrical collector bars with copper inserts is investigated using finite element modeling. The thermal expansion during the cell start up is used to generate contact between the collector bars and the carbon block, thus not requiring any cast iron or sealing operations. Different geometry configurations are explored using a thermo-electro-mechanical model to understand its behavior and to determine their effect on energy consumption and cell life expectancy. An economic analysis is also performed to evaluate the cost effectiveness of those configurations. The geometry is finally optimized to maximize the new design’s performance. Results indicate that a significant voltage drop reduction and a more uniform current distribution can be achieved by improving the contact quality between the carbon block and the collector bars.

Full textWhat kind of interaction occurs in the preschool hallway among the children and their teachers? Does this interaction enable any kind of learning? This is a qualitative study performed at a preschool in a municipality in the south of Sweden. The purpose of the study was to try to find out what is actually happening in the preschool hallway, and if there is any kind of or potential for learning in the preschool hallway. The empirical data was collected through observations in the preschool hallway at four occasions when the children were about to come in or go outside. The observations were followed up by semi-structured interviews with three of the teachers in the department. The empirical data was then analyzed and interpreted on the basis of the socio-cultural perspective on learning and development.The results show that the interaction in the preschool hallway mainly happens around all the practical things associated with the hallway. The conversations here are divided in to two categories; conversations of private nature and conversations about practical issues concerning the preschool activities. The study also showed that in the preschool hallway there is an ongoing learning process, with the potential of meeting many goals of the preschool curriculum. The results showed that the teachers often overlook these learning situations due to the fact that the learning processes here are subordinate to the goal of getting the children ready to go in or out.

Full textIn this thesis, a multirate realization of an interpolation operation is explored. As one of the requirements for proper functionality of the digital pulse-width modulator, a 16-bit digital input signal is to be upsampled 32 times. To obtain the required oversampling ratio, five separate interpolator stages were designed and implemented. Each interpolator stage performed uppsampling by a factor of two followed by an image-rejection lowpass FIR filter. Since, each individual interpolator stage upsamples the input signal by a factor of two, interpolation filters were realized as a half-band FIR filters. This kind of linear-phase FIR filters have a nice property of having every other filter coefficient equal to zero except for the middle one which equals 0.5. By utilizing the half-band FIR filters for the actual realization of the interpolation filters, the overall computational complexity was substantially reduced. In addition, several multirate techniques have been utilized for deriving more efficient interpolator structures. Hence, the impulse response of individual interpolator filters was rewritten into its corresponding polyphase form. This further simplifies the interpolator realization. To eliminate multiplication by 0.5 in one of two polyphase subfilters, the filter gain was deliberately increased by a factor of two. Thus, one polyphase path only contained delay elements. In addition, for the realization of filter multipliers, a multiple constant multiplication, (MCM), algorithm was utilized. The idea behind the MCM algorithm, was to perform multiplication operations as a number of addition operations and appropriate input signal shifts. As a result, less hardware was needed for the actual interpolation chain implementation. For the correct functionality of the interpolator chain, scaling coefficients were introduced into the each interpolation stage. This is done in order to reduce the possibility of overflow. For the scaling process, a safe scaling method was used. The actual quantization noise generated by the interpolator chain was also estimated and appropriate system adjustments were performed.

Full textThis thesis presents transverse magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall resistivity measurements of nickel thin films at temperatures between 280 and 455 K and pressures up to 6 GPa. An experimental system was developed for conducting precise magnetotransport measurements using the current reversal and van der Pauw techniques in combination with a 10 T superconducting magnet. Polycrystalline Ni0.985O0.015 thin film samples were manufactured with preexisting point contacts allowing highly reproducible magnetotransport measurements at pressure in the diamond anvil cell (DAC).
The magnetic resistivity above the technical saturation of the magnetization was found to decrease linearly to the highest applied fields, 10 T, while the field derivative, 0.010-0.018 µΩ cm T-1 between 280 and 316 K, increased with temperature and decreased with pressure. The decrease in the magnetoresistance is attributed to spin wave damping of electron-magnon scattering processes at high fields. The magnon mass, 535(14) meV Å2 at 0 K and 0 GPa, determined from longitudinal magnetic resistivity theory is a slightly increasing function of pressure. Correlation between the zero field resistivity and the extraordinary Hall coefficient (EHC) confirmed side jump scattering as the dominant diffusion mechanism at 0 GPa, however, skew scattering was found to become increasingly important with pressure.
The effect of oxygen and pressure on the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level was investigated through total energy band structure calculations using a periodic supercell of 64 atoms to simulate the sample chemistry. The DOS of Ni0.985O0.015 at the Fermi level was found to increase by 27% at 10 GPa relative to 0 GPa. However, when compared to the results for pure Ni, decreases of 60% and 23% occurred for the corresponding calculations at 0 and 10 GPa. The relative differences in the magnetic resistivity are attributed to competing effects between the DOS, average magnetic moment and magnon mass.
The technique developed for conducting magnetotransport measurements at pressure is applicable to the study of electronic diffusion in ferromagnets as well as geophysical problems such as the geodynamo.

Full textAbout 50 miles west of Stockholm is Strängnäs located. A small town that has its roots in the Swedish Middle Ages. Since the city for many years did not have any actual public collection building, the idea of creating a city hall down by the harbor area became a positive and exciting challenge. The essential factors that came to specifically form the basis for designing the "Strengnes City Hall" are therefore the following: - To challenge the northern position by letting the light / sun reach the "essential" parts of the building bodies, as well as the surroundings with accommodation that today has fully exposed sunlight from south and west. Therefore, the height of the building and ceiling angles are adapted to the sun's path. - Creating a physically "light" and compliant structure that at the same time docks minimally against the south-facing brick building, which at the same time creates a courtyard on the roof that opens to the harbor area in the west and evening sun. - Working according to an aesthetic formula with an exterior materiality that alloys itself with the "small" town and the square-like harbor area. The building therefore consists of two interconnected building bodies with two main functions where concepts such as "utility and pleasure" interact in the different spatialities. With regard to the property's exposure to the large open square area to the west, consideration has therefore been taken in both the interior as well as the exterior room, both in terms of visual and functional experience.

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the study of the magneto-transport properties of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG), and more specifically graphene on silicon carbide (G/SiC) as well as the interface between two complex oxides LaAlO3 / SrTiO3 (LAO/STO). We take advantage of very high magnetic field (up to 80 T) and very low temperature (down to 40 mK) to investigate the quantum transport properties, which are evocative of the underlying electronic band-structure. In G/SiC, close to the quantum Hall breakdown regime, we measure an ultra-broad quantum Hall plateau at R=h/2e² covering a magnetic field range of more than 70 T (from 7 T to 80 T). Accordingly, the longitudinal resistance is close to zero, but displays unexpected weak 1/B-periodic oscillations. Based on microscopic observations, this 2DEG is modeled as a low charge carrier density graphene matrix decorated by micrometers-size puddles with larger doping. Numerical simulations of the transport properties reproduce well both the broad Quantum Hall plateau and the presence of the oscillations. Besides the SiC substrate which acts as a charge reservoir and stabilizes the quantum Hall state at filling factor ν=2, a magnetic field dependent transfer of charges involving the puddles is responsible for the presence of the oscillating features. This original study provides new insights for resistance metrology purposes. The 2DEG arising at the interface between the complex oxides LAO and STO is nowadays envisioned for future multi-functional devices. Their electronic properties are still a matter of debate and require further investigations. The high field magneto-resistance of this 2DEG displays quasi-periodic Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations (SdHO) and a linear Hall effect up to 55 T at low temperature. We observe a large discrepancy between the carrier density extracted from the period of the SdHO and the slope of the Hall resistance, which constitutes a strong evidence for the presence of many sub-bands crossing the Fermi energy. The quasi-periodic oscillations of the magneto-resistance are well reproduced by numerical simulations taking into account the strong Rashba effect at the interface. In addition, from the back-gate voltage evolution of the SdHO at sub-kelvin temperature, we identify the electronic sub-bands contributing to transport, the orbital symmetry from which they derive, as well as their spatial localization along the interface

Full textIn the context of ever increasing traffic demand, future long-haul optical transmission systems will evaluate towards higher capacity and will be able to support more flexible optical networking. In this thesis, we study the potential of multi-band OFDM, which is a credible alternative of the industrial single-carrier solutions for future generations of beyond 100 Gbps systems. After presenting a brief overview of long-haul transmission systems and OFDM digital signal processing techniques, we show the experimental implementation of 16QAM-OFDM as well as its transmission performance. Some implementation constraints of 16QAM-OFDM related to hardware impairments have been investigated. The transmission performance has been compared with that of Nyquist-WDM format. After that, in the context of superchannel and flexible optical networking, we have carried out an experimental proof-of-concept of sub-wavelength optical switching. We have demonstrated the feasibility of such optical add-drop operations inside OFDM and Nyquist-WDM superchannels. At last, we have addressed some short-term research topics that concern telecom companies, such as the potential application scenarios of the low-cost and power-efficient coherent CFP interface based on Silicon photonics integration technology

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the description of both single-particle and bosonic quantum fluid Physics in topological systems. After introductory chapters on these subjects, I first discuss single-particle topological phenomena in honeycomb lattices. This allows to compare two theoretical models leading to quantum anomalous Hall effect for electrons and photons and to discuss the photonic quantum valley Hall effect at the interface between opposite staggered cavity lattices.In a second part, I present some phenomena which emerge due to the interplay of the linear topological effects with the presence of interacting bosonic quantum fluid described by mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. First, I show that the spin-anisotropic interactions lead to density-driven topological transitions for elementary excitations of a condensate loaded in the polariton quantum anomalous Hall model (thermal equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium quasi-resonant excitation configurations). Then, I show that the vortex excitations of a scalar condensate in a quantum valley Hall system, contrary to linear wavepackets, can exhibit a robust chiral propagation along the interface, with direction given by their winding in real space, leading to an analog of quantum spin Hall effect for these non-linear excitations. Finally, coming back to linear geometrical effects, I will focus on the anomalous Hall effect exhibited by an accelerated wavepacket in a two-band system. In this context, I present a non-adiabatic correction to the known semiclassical equations of motion which can be expressed in terms of the quantum geometric tensor elements. We also propose a protocol to directly measure the tensor components in radiative photonic systems
