Full textThis research is a multi-situated ethnography of religious, humanitarian and state institutional politics for children living in the slums of Bangkok (Thailand). The issue of the institutional taking charge of slum children is approached here through a field of political anthropology that refers to the so-called “cultural politics of childhood”, namely the political, ideological and social uses of childhood. The slum children I focus on are simultaneously supported by a Catholic foundation, a Buddhist charitable institution, and other “secular” NGOs. Besides, they attend state schools and come back to the slum (their home) to visit their relatives. Each of these places embodies a specific construction and discourse on childhood (the Catholic, the Christian, the Buddhist, the vernacular, and the State one), which is historically, theologically, socially, culturally, and politically specific. In the first part of the thesis, I analyse the relationship among these different institutional and religious discourses and practices as a political competition between the conflicting local, national and international forces which are struggling to shape the social-moral nature of the Thai society's future. In the second part, I look back at the “targets” of such politics – the children themselves – and at the hybrid religious meanings these ideologies and practices assume as part of the children’s subjective experiences. How do children respond to the expectations of institutional contexts that interpret them in different ways? How can they simultaneously play the role of devout Catholics, Buddhists, victims, and citizens? How do they subjectively handle these contradictions? From this micro-analytical angle, I explore the meaning of these different discourses for the children themselves, showing the agency of children in appropriating and strategically using the very discourses that are directed at governing/saving/educating them, and the complexity of the children’s self in a urban local context shaped by the logic of transnational humanitarian compassion.
