Abstract:

Jones, Isaiah E. "The Mystical Union of Infant Baptism: How Baptists Contributed to the Idea of Race by Their Rejection of Infant Baptism." DigitalCommons@USU, 2015. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4514.

Full text
Abstract:
In the first three centuries CE, the sacrament of baptism proved to be a universal tool which united people beyond age, race, or ethnicity as we understand it today. To put it simply, the theological meaning of baptism was reinforced by the sacrament of infant baptism. That is to say that the Christian faith was for all, irrespective of one’s race, age, or social-status. This openness to Christianity changed in the early modern period. In the seventeenth century the Baptists rejected infant baptism, for a more rational faith based on Enlightenment and Romantic assumptions. What the Baptists did not realize was just how embedded the social, political, economic, and other forms of human meaning and understanding were rooted in the sacrament of infant baptism. This thesis is an intellectual and social history on how Baptists contributed to the idea of race in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by their rejection of infant baptism. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Southern Baptists created a theology that supported racial superiority in North America. Once radical Protestant groups such as the Baptists rejected the inclusive baptismal theology of Irenaeus Lyon and Origen of Alexandria by leaving the Church of England, the incarnational and communal elements that once united Christianity would lead to racial divisions within Christian denominations in the modern period. Consequently, by rejecting the classical understanding of baptism-salvation, many Baptists looked elsewhere than baptism or religion for their identity and now looked to novel notions of species and race. These innovative explanations of identity outside of baptism led to racial superiority within North American Christendom in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. For the purpose of this study, I shall look at second century CE theologians Irenaeus of Lyons (130-202 CE) and Origen of Alexandria (184-254 CE) and compare their thoughts to the theological interpretation of John Smyth of Nottinghamshire (1570-1612 CE), and how his theological approach indirectly contributed to the idea of racial superiority (i.e. skin color) within early North American Christendom.

Abstract:
The mechanical behavior of crystalline material has a high dependence on its microstructure, notably when crystallite size reaches the nanometer scale. Crystallites size is controled by the stratification of thermodynamically immiscible materials, namely tungsten and copper, isotropic and anisotropic elastically, respectively. Thin films were deposited by physical vapor deposition and their characterizations were carried out combining electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction and diffusion. In situ tensile testing combined with X-ray diffraction on supported composite W/Cu have been used to get insight into sample mechanical behavior. This work emphasises the strong complementarity between electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses on microstructure characterizations, required to interpret and model tensile testing results. Theses analysis have revealed that very thin copper layers arrange as dispersoïds and that a particular crystallographic orientation distribution within tungsten layers appear as <110> and <111>. The results obtained on quasi-isotropic copper dispersoïds and laminated W/Cu composites have clearly revealed structure and size effects in tungsten sub-layers. A more detailed study of the elastic domain of laminated composite has not only revealed a strong dependence on residual stresses, but also an uppermost dislocation appearance within copper layers leading to a load transfer on tungsten layers, leading to mode II crack apparitions

Dieleman, Margreet. Thesis, Angers, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018ANGE0050/document.

Abstract:
By the year 1555, the catholic kingdom of France affronted the settlement of Churches "being reformed according to the Gospel". Being on conflict with many subjects, Catholic and Reformed nevertheless mutually recognize baptism received in the opposite confession. Focusing on the Western synodal provinces, this thesis explores the reality of mutual recognition and the contribution of baptism to the reformed identity. On the one hand, the study concerns texts (Confession of Faith, Church Order, the Baptism's Form, catechisms, sermons) as well as religious controversy. On the other hand, the study examines baptismal practice bu baptism records, consistoty records and synod proceedings, egodocuments and the royal regulation. Where in the beginning the principal tensions concern catholic baptism ceremonies, later on, they cristallize on catholic doctrine of the absolute necessity of baptism for infants' salvation, revealing in the meantime internal discordance amongst the Reformed. The 'ritual' of baptism, according to texts and observational writings reveals a sobre liturgy. The presentation of infants by godparents is submitted to several rules being surveyed by the consistories, which make it contribute to community cohesion. Baptismal records reveal some typical vocabulary and godparent models ; the supposed preference for Old Testament given names could only partially be confirmed. The King used baptism as an instrument to bring the Reformed back to the Catholic faith, before banning it by the edict of Revocation (1685)

Abstract:
The subject treated in this thesis is the doctrine of the church among the English Calvinistic Baptists in the period, circa 1640-1660. This timeframe covers the significant phase of early Calvinistic Baptist emergence in society and literary output. The thesis seeks to explore the development of theological commitments regarding the nature of the church within the turbulent historical context of the time. The background to the emergence of the Calvinistic Baptists was the demise of the Anglican Church of England, the establishment by Act of Parliament of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, and the establishment of a Presbyterian Church of England. The English experiment with Presbyterianism began and ended in the years covered in this work. Ecclesiology was thus one of the most important doctrines under consideration in the phase of English history. This thesis is a contribution to understanding alternative forms of ecclesiology outside of the mainstream National Church settlement. It will be argued in this thesis that the emergence and development of Calvinistic Baptist ecclesiology was a natural development of one stream of Puritan theology of the church. This was the tradition associated with Robert Brown, and the English separatist movement dating from the 1570s. This tradition was refined and made experimental in the work of Henry Jacob. Having developed his ecclesiology in the Netherlands, in 1616 Jacob founded a congregation in Southwark, London from which Calvinistic Baptists would emerge with distinct baptismal convictions by 1638. Central to Jacob's ideology was the belief that a rightly ordered church acknowledged Christ as King over his people. The Christological priority of early Calvinistic Baptist ecclesiology will constitute the primary contribution of this thesis to investigation of dissenting theology in the period.

One of my favorite movie characters said he'd worn lots of shoes, meaning he'd been a great many places and done a great many things. Well, I've never been to war or run across America or founded a shrimp company or shook the President's hand or returned kickoffs for the University of Alabama. But I did grow up in a church, come of age, and stay there, which is perhaps as interesting. I am now a husband, worship leader, singer-songwriter, and college writing instructor, struggling to capture fragments of who I was before I was any of these things, and hoping to shed some light on how I came to be who I am today. If you need the entirety of the story, read no further. But if a few scenes will do for now, in a brief Master's Thesis, then by all means... Abstract:
Following a status quaestionis and some methodological considerations, this workconsiders the seven occurrences of the word in the course of the Matthean narrative, in theirclose and large context, so as to take into account their premiss, consequences and framework. Each passage is examined through a narrative analysis method of exegesis. All along the narrative, Matthew goes along his reader to take him, via successivetouches, all the way through a change in understanding (metanoia). At the end of this process, the reader can take it up again with what he understood of all the concepts at stake. Thus, righteousness) remains absolutely necessary to enter the Kingdom,as it was in the First Alliance. Yet, it does not depend any more upon an effort made to applyall the instructions of the Law, which still retains its validity to make life possible on earth; itdepends upon the faith one puts in the announcement of the Heavenly Kingdom, a trust thatmay be manifested through the acceptance of baptism, discipleship and prayer. Thisrighteousness, fully accomplished in Jesus’ baptism, is a gift of the Heavenly Father whowants to see his children worthy of his Kingdom. It goes along the gift of the Kingdom. Oneis hungry and thirsty for it; it needs to be always looked for. It allows anyone to considerhimself as a child of the Father and to make Him the central point of his life, and thus toconsider other human beings as brothers rather than enemies

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to define the social elements related to baptism for the period from the 4th to the 7th c. This perspective deals with practical behaviours and mental attitudes that are generated within the society by the very existence of the baptismal ritual. This social-historical approach has been combined with other two perspectives: history of liturgy and theology, and history of art and archaeology. The sampling of the geographical areas under analysis considers mainly the Eastern Mediterranean, but also some of the Western regions, in order to be as much wider and representative as possible. The quantitative archaeological and topographical data, gathered from the record of 436 baptisteries, have been related to the evolution of liturgy as well as to historical and social contexts in the various areas, as derived from different documentary sources and from scholarly literature. Baptism, together with the thoughts and practices that are connected to it, and derived from it, has turn out to be fundamental in the transformation of social structures that takes place in Late Antiquity. It contributed, amongst other factors, to the process of slow change of the social schemes, that characterized the transition between Antiquity and Middle Ages: Christianity gradually became a source of uniformity for collective identity, by bringing together different social strata on the base of the same ideals. This process of social “democratisation”, not without contradictions, began with the general spread of baptism

Abstract:
The Foucaldian reading of the Church Fathers in the 1980s occupies a central place in his project of genealogy of the modern subject. One of its most important axes is the analysis of the Christian notion of truth-telling. The formation of an analytic discourse of self, combined with the obligation of total obedience to the other, is an essential part of Christian subjectivity. Our analysis focuses on the various forms of the basic obligation to manifest one's truth in the three Christian practices of baptism, penance, and the direction of consciousness. We propose a critical reading of the Foucauldian analysis of the Christian truth-telling in the course of 1980, On the Government of the living, Wrong-doing, Truth-telling and Confessions of the Flesh, by examining the singularity of its method compared to historians. We also retrace the evolution of the way Foucault problematizes his analysis of Christianity and broadens the historical context. Finally, we propose a comparative reading of the notion of truth-telling both in Confucian philosophy and early Christianity

Li, Chenzhe. Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020MON30004.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the phenomenon of infanticide and abandoned children in China from1689 to 1840, through the descriptions of the Catholic missionaries, and the evangelization ofchildren by the Jesuits and the priests of the Paris Foreign Missions. By comparing thedifferent visions of various sources, this study attempts to reveal the reality of thephenomenon and its reasons, its reactions and the actions taken by the Chinese authority, aswell as by the European missionaries. It also highlights the work of childhood and theimportance of baptism for these Catholic missionaries.By exploring a rich literature, we bring, in the first part, different points of view brought byCatholic missionaries, by other Western travelers, and by the Chinese scholars and mandarins. The missionaries' testimonies are meant to attract more resources to help these miserablechildren. The writings of British travelers show the superiority of Europeans versus "Chinesebarbarism". Small girls are the first victims of infanticide and exposure, which is explained bythe status of inferiority of women, and by a series of cyclical and structural causes. This partalso presents the organization of Chinese hospices by comparing it to that of Westernhospices through abundant Chinese sources, which are barely used by Westernhistoriography.Hoping to convert as many pagans as possible, these Catholic missionaries devotedthemselves to this work of baptism of moribund children. They cared first of all about thesesouls who, by escaping the limbo of the children, will eternally glorify the Lord. In thecontext of the prohibition of Christianity in China in the eighteenth century after the RitesControversies, they thought it would be more appropriate to recruit some catechists to baptizethe dying exposed children than to establish the Catholic hospices. The Christian women werean important force in this work as well. The situation has been changed after the Opium Wars. From the second half of the nineteenth century, the French mission was under the protectionof its state. The originality of this research is to bring together anthropology, gender history and religioushistory, and to insert the study into the historical context of the asian mission and the globalmission, as well as the process of colonization. We hope that this research will shed new lighton the image of China in the eyes of Europeans at the time of the expansion of Westerncivilization and, at the same time, that it will contribute to enriching the understanding of thedifference between Western Catholic culture and Chinese culture

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 342-359.
Baptist Identity In Ecumenical Context is, essentially, an exposition of the 1987 statement on Baptist Principles of the Baptist Union of South Africa. The Statement has had no critical reflection given it to date and therefore this study is a new contribution to the growing corpus of material on Baptist theology in South Africa. The thesis explains the identity of South African Baptists using the key word discipleship. Though not stated as such, the1987 Statement on Baptist Principles is an expression of discipleship. Discipleship is described and critically analysed in the thesis as community, its sign as baptism, ministry is discipleship expressed in society, and freedom is the term given to denote the focus on religious liberty and the separation of church from the state, as well as indicating the church's prophetic role. Drawing from the rich heritage of Anabaptist and English Baptist history and theology, and reflecting on other evangelical and ecumenical theological writings, the thesis shows the value of 'discipleship' as the motif for Baptists in the contemporary South African setting. The thesis invites South African Baptists to re-discover this motif both in the context of their own tradition and in their relations with other Christian churches.

De, Pasquale Andrea. "Jean-Baptiste Bodoni, imprimeur d’Europe." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EPHE4051.

Full text
Abstract:
Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) is one of the most famous printers of the western world and, for Italy, the last representative of the "Ancien Régime Typography" at the same time as the first "modern". It has indeed been able to make his own characters while exercising together printing and book trade. After him, the industrialization of the book begins: the activities he met in his company, according to tradition dating back to the birth of printing, divided without return, while print production is now addressed to both larger markets and different and wider audiences. Mass prints were accompanied by a decline in quality and of greater banality of style. With Angelo Pezzana, director of the Library of Parma in the nineteenth century, the tools used by Bodoni for making type, but also its archives and a complete collection of volumes produced by his typography, have been preserved until today. It is therefore possible to reconstruct Bodoni of life, with particular emphasis on its relations with the courts of Europe and the market for bibliophile, on the conditions and labor practices in the foundry of characters and in printing, and the genesis of the most famous works. His fortune follow his death and continues until today, where Bodoni characters are used in graphics and for publications and magazines, as well as for fashion brands. They are always, symbols of elegance, simplicity, and at the same time of the luxury and of the Italian style

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the study of metallic nanocomposite copper/niobium (Cu/Nb) wires, combining high electrical conductivity and high strength, as required for the design of high magnetic field resistive coils. The reinforced continuous nanocomposite Cu/Nb conductors are fabricated via a severe plastic deformation process (SPD), which consists in repeated extrusion, drawing and bundling cycles (Accumulative Drawing and Bundling : ADB) and leads to the nanostructuration of the Nb reinforcements and a multi-scale Cu matrix. In order to optimize the process, the effect of heat treatments on texture and its development during the process were analysed by means of laboratory X-ray diffraction. Complementary in-situ heat treatments under synchrotron radiation gave a better insight into the elementary annealing mechanisms and enabled defining optimized heat treatments. These experiments also revealed that the thermal stability of Cu/Nb conductors is extremely dependent of the microstructure size: recovery, recrystallization, grain growth and all relaxation processes are frustrated in the case of nanocomposites. From these results, optimized “co-axial” conductors reinforced by Nb nanofilaments and nanotubes were processed. Their microstructure and physical properties have been characterized and compared to those of previous Cu/Nb nanocomposite conductors. With the possibility to produce long wires with improved properties, these new Cu/Nb nanocomposites offer a great alternative to existing conductors for future high magnetic field applications
