This is a study of how and why nationality, as a perception of time, space, and political authority, was diffused in the Ottoman Empire, leading to its fragmentation into two nation state polities - namely, Greece and Turkey. These questions are addressed through the study of banknotes. In studying the process whereby the banknote became a territorial currency, which allowed the impersonal and catholic mediation of transactions across, yet only within, national territories, the banknote is treated as a 'window' to the normative alignment of a national community. In studying the banknote as a cultural artifact that empowers and at the same time delineates a protocol of social interaction - ie. economic exchange - the banknote is treated as a window to a process of ‘sign-alignment', namely the homogenization of cultural expression.

This thesis looks at the problem of border delineations and walls within a modern context and proposes the use of borders for functions supplementary to border control and security – such as local commerce, cultural spaces, tourism, hospitality, and public gathering places. Border delineations and walls have been used to protect cities and towns throughout history. In the present age of modern surveillance and advanced military technology however, physical walls have much less significance for the protection of present-day states and nations and have become artifacts of mostly symbolic significance. In an increasingly connected world with the potential for becoming more compassionate, the symbolic significance of the border wall, barrier, and delineation demands to be reassessed and reapproached. This opens the possibility of designing a new binational border typology with functions of business, tourism, cultural education, hospitality, and public assembly that can mutually benefit bordering regions. Spatial justice involves the fair and equitable distribution within a space of resources and opportunities. The site of this thesis is the 1949 Armistice Agreement, or Green Line, on the perimeter of the West Bank of Palestine – a prolonged border conflict of our time and a powerful example of spatial injustice. Through a combination of ancient and modern materials, this thesis explores the potential of hospitality through the design of a roadside inn to recognize the history of its place and create a physical and symbolic bridge for future cooperation. In addition to lodging for travelers, the project's program, or scope of work, includes a museum, artist workshops, dining areas, gift shops, and gathering spaces. Straddling the Green Line along the Dead Sea shoreline, it is designed to carry the memory of the land, but also to symbolize a future that joins divided communities.

This thesis presents a seismic evaluation of the unreinforced masonry buildings in Boston Massachusetts's historical Back Bay neighborhood. This Boston district, famous for its rows of Victorian brownstone residences is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of 19 'h century urban design. There are a few specific reasons to speculate at the vulnerability of this neighborhood to seismic events. First, in 1755, one hundred years before the Back Bay started to be built, the most massive earthquake of New England's history occurred, damaging unreinforced masonry structures in Boston. Approximately eighty percent of the Back Bay neighborhood is now made up of unreinforced masonry structures. Second, seismic design was not required in Boston until 1975, which means a staggering majority of the buildings in the Back Bay were constructed without any kind of anti-seismic lateral system. The aim of this thesis is to assess the structural response of the unreinforced masonry homes of the Back Bay to seismic activity due to these issues. A case study of an unreinforced masonry building in the neighborhood is assessed through structural analysis of its facade and party walls. The performance of this building is extrapolated to represent the state of the unreinforced masonry buildings of the Back Bay.

The recent financial crisis has brought a huge loss of faith in economic rationality and the economic discipline. For the current financial industry, how to re-build "Trust" with customers is the one of biggest issues. Although we know that the strong relationship between the deep level of trust and the banking business has high potential, it has not yet been optimized, especially in online transaction banking. This is in part due to customers' perception of higher risk in the absence of traditional face to face interaction. Recent findings have shown that facial cues can have a powerful impact on trust building. However, there is also evidence that images of faces in some cases can decrease online interactions. Thus, the goal of this thesis is to investigate the impact of different types of facial attributes and which customer profiles will most benefit from such facial images in online banking. In an experimental setting, this research created a personalized web site which features the banker's representative, and conducted an investment game in order to correlate them with investment performance. This research also included rating trustworthiness on a banking advisor's photo and a demographic questionnaire for statistic trust profiling. Understanding a subject's decision making mechanism by giving them advisor's facial stimuli in a naturalistic online context, with integrating communication will provide an important potential for building and promoting trust, which further suggest Suruga Bank will be in an unique position by capitalizing on the new marketing methodology.

Full textIn 1994, the Palestinian self-government was established on the Gaza Strip and West Bank (hereinafter WBGS) as result of Oslo process. One of its main challenges of that government was how to deal with this debilitating heritage whilst promoting institutions and institutional capacity building, both of which began gaining momentum from 1994 onwards. However, the reality of the Oslo process has meant that in fact what has occurred is a concentration of power into the hand of the ruling elite (Arafat and the small elite around him) at the expense of the majority of population who were denied access to national level institutions of state functions. This state of the political marginalization (or denationalization) of the majority of population hindered the emergence of a democratic political system based on the principles of the separation of powers, accountability, and transparency, and stifled the emergence of the rule of law. Arafat and the small elite around him had not only hindered the emergence of a democratic political system, and stifled the emergence of the rule of law, but also the emergence of a bureaucratic system with a recruitment system based on achievement rather than informal/irrational criteria (competence), highly specialized and differentiated administrative role of civil servants (differentiation), and well established and thoroughly understandable system of super-ordination and sub-ordination (hierarchy) as Max Weber suggests. In response, the opponents of Oslo process & Arafat- Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and PFLP-had strengthened their institutions, and started to practice Para-state functions parallel to PA institutions (as chapter V shows). These instituions are protected by the militia of the political party with which it is affiliated, like Izz El Din El Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, and others. Accordingly, State- in the term of central organization with the power of issuing authoritative binding legal rules and monopolizing coercion (as Joel Migdal suggests)- was absent from the Palestinian scene.

The objective of this thesis is to explore the transformation of an existing building type and the application of the support/infill concept in a new context. For this purpose, a traditional Back Bay residential form in Boston has been selected. The study has been carried out in two parts: (I) Part One consists of an observational study of the existing context. This involved an analysis on the levels of urban structure, urban tissue and lot unit. The rules of the original Back Bay house type are identified in the last section. (II) The second part comprises a design study based on the observed context by inserting new constraints. To discover possible floor-plan variations within the type, the support/ infill distinction has been applied. Furthermore, the application of the modified type to irregular lot forms is studied. At the end of the thesis unresolved issues are discussed..

Full textInterest in buildings with wood as a load-bearing frame has increased. Everything is built from tall residential buildings to sports arenas where wood is the dominant material. The development has been rapid in wood construction, this has led to the fact that today it is possible to use wooden frame and board material to meet the corresponding safety and fire requirements that were previously only possible for construction with concrete and steel. Higher and larger buildings also carry higher loads where pressure perpendicular to the fibers is something that needs to be considered. This entails certain challenges when designing clean wooden structures where the effective areas will be very large in order to meet the dimensioning requirements that are currently set according to Swedish building regulations. This problem is based on the fact that wood as a material has different properties in different directions and that the material is relatively weak when loaded perpendicular to the fiber direction. The problem is often concentrated in zones where pillars meet beams where the beam is easily deformed. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether cross-laminated timber can function as a reinforcement measure between pillars and beams. To investigate this, 25 glulam timber beams with various modifications were pressure tested and reinforced with one, two or three slats of cross-laminated timber. The result is then compared with the compressive force capacity of an unreinforced beam. The dimensions of the specimens are 86x315 mm where the glulam is of the GL30C type and where the strength class of the cross-glued slats is C24. The idea is to achieve a globally stronger unit. The experimental experiments use a hydraulic press that measures force and displacement and a non-contact measuring system that measures strains. The results show that the compressive force capacity increases with an increased number of cross-laminated timber slats. Comparison between an unreinforced joint and a joint reinforced with 3 KL slats shows an increase in compressive force capacity of 130% at a displacement of 10 mm. The load spreading in the material is difficult to define exactly, but it indicates that some form of load spreading takes place. The effective area at the glulam increases as strains occur during the entire length of the KL slat. The conclusion of the study is that cross-laminated timber as a reinforcing measure can increase the compressive capacity of a joint.

Full textIndustrial buildings are a part of the growing consumption of energy, according to the Swedish Energy Agency, which imposes demands on energy use. Therefore, there is a demand to reduce energy requirements and build with a focus on sustainability. The purpose of this study was to investigate energy adaptations that promote economic sustainability. The study was conducted as a case study of an existing truck building, where possible energy adjustments were investigated to improve the sustainability of the building's energy demands. The methods used were several energy and environmental-focused multicriteria analyzes and energy calculations. Multicriteria analyzes gave both an improved building envelope and heat source, which contributed to a lower energy requirement for the building. In addition to energy-based solutions, further changes were made to extend the sustainability of the building's future in the environmental issue, such as the establishment of a greenfactor. The conclusion of the study was that it is possible to build an energy-efficient truck building in a economically sustainable way. By establishing a geothermal heating system and switching to environmentally sustainable materials in the building envelope, there is a pay-back time for the truck building which shows an economic sustainability after about 18 years.
