Abstract:
Packaging plays an important role in decreasing the environmental impact and, simultaneously, improving well-being and safety of people. Due to a lack of time, ready-to-eat meal (RTE) offers more convenience choice to consumers than buying all ingredients and cooking at home. Thermoforming containers for RTE meals provides many packaging benefits such as protection and preservation, shelf life expansion, good appearance for display at point of purchase, convenience during transport and usage. However, thermoforming trays are made of plastic materials and are disposable packaging. This research project focuses on three parts: the study of the relationship between RTE food attributes and the structural packaging characteristics, the analysis of existing thermoforming structural design, and the synthesis of a new approach which takes the environmental impact into account for RTE packaging structures. The purposes of this research are (1) to investigate the technical design problems for these package’s structural characteristics by a thermoforming method, (2) to quantify the food packaging characteristics in relation to product attributes by using the perceptual mapping, as well as (3) to formulate a design guideline for the structural packaging characteristics which incorporates with the criterion of the environmental concern.

Abstract:
The collection and recycling of packaging and life cycle assessments have traditionally been developed from a technical perspective, not including the actors in the chain. How recycling should be done depends on who you ask, and whether you look at the issue from an energy, material, legal or user perspective. FTI, the Packaging and Newspaper Collection organization is responsible for better circularity and collecting these fractions in Sweden’s municipalities. When recyclable materials end up in the wrong place, it causes problems leading to increased energy use in the life cycle. The ongoing project Tjårven, aims to reduce energy use in connection with packaging collection, as well as potential energy gains in the second stage of the packaging life cycle, by redesigning packaging collection from a user centred perspective. To do this, design interventions are developed based on observed and self-reported user behaviour, a literature review of state-of-the-art collection infrastructure and an understanding of the system developed using actor-based LCA methodology. The latter methodology is used to show the energy use in the lifecycle, including the actions of the actors in the chain. The interventions developed will be tested through a case study that will be evaluated to see if it helps to achieve more energy efficient collection infrastructure, allowing for better circularity and therefore more sustainable future lifestyles. The present article presents the first part of the project, summarizing the results from the user centred observations, literature review and initial actor-based LCA model.

Abstract:
The rapid disposal of products has detrimental effects on environment which is increasing resource consumption for the production of new products, along with the waste production. Therefore, designing long lasting products has great importance for achieving sustainable consumption and production. The present study analyzes the implications of an approach called post-use design thinking for achieving sustainable consumption and production through product longevity. To explore that approach, two educational industrial design projects are analyzed throughout the study. The results suggest that post-use design thinking should be considered at the early stages of the design process. The idea generation exercises developed specifically for this design thinking seem to be helpful in generating design solutions for post-use phase. The results also indicate that the post-use design thinking is feasible in terms of design and production for glass packaging products, which is the specific case analyzed throughout the research.

Kulkarni, Gajanan Pratap. "Development of the Combined Methodology to Understand Designers’ Experimentation and GO-NO-GO Decision-Making during New Product Design and Development." Thesis, 2016. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/4935.

Full text
Abstract:
New Product Development (NPD) is the most important activity, which is recognized as the growth engine for product centric organizations to sustain, prosper, and accumulate stakes in the market. Development of new products is completely original process; it starts from scratch and takes physical functional form that serves the specific purpose of users. The researcher is interested in understanding experimentation and decision-making activities of designers during new product design and development process. Experimentation is believed as the spirit behind jumping into undiscovered glories. It is one of the gracious ways of trying and testing the principles and investigates the legality of hypothesis. The process of experimentation allows the experimenter to determine the usefulness of previously untried things. In this research context, the researcher has come to know that designers’ way of experimentation is quite different from that of scientists and artists. Taking this as a point of motivation, the objective of the present research work is to understand, capture, and report designers’/design teams’ experimentation phenomenon during new product design and development process from their psychology perspective. One more crucial activity designers/design teams face at every product development stage is that they make Go and No-Go decisions. This is the mandatory part of new product design and development process takes place from idea-to-launch. This decisive act of designers decides product success or failure. Designers and developers face high risk every time when they make Go/Kill decisions at every development stage-gate. Thus, going with the right decisions and refusing the wrong ones should be the driving force that allows designers to move ahead. The researcher is interested in understanding designers’/design teams’ Go-No-Go decision-making during various product development stages. The researcher has found that the application of statistical experimental design techniques to the new product design problems is not quite famous among designers. Instead of that, designers use their own ways of doing experiments. To achieve the research objectives, the post facto analysis of the three new product design case studies is conducted. The researcher has engaged and keenly observed these design projects as an active/passive observer. The observed cases studies were not completely structured but followed some implicit and explicit structure. Blandford’s PRETAR framework is used to design, conduct, and report this semi structured qualitative product design case studies. The researcher is interested in doing qualitative descriptive analysis of the case studies without formulating any hypothesis. This view is supported by the grounded theory approach. The Combined IP-SR-GP Methodology is the grounded theory/model developed in this thesis. The three approaches - Immanuel Kant’s ‘Principle of an Inquiry Propagation’ [IP], Newell and Simon’s ‘Search Representation of a Problem’ [SR] and the basic concepts and principles of perceptual organization i.e. Gestalt School of Psychology [GP] are sequentially applied to case studies to understand designers’/design teams’ experimentation phenomenon and their Go-No-Go decision-making. Inquiry propagation is famous term used by the philosopher Kant [1724-1804]; that suggests every answer begets more inquiries. The inquiry propagation approach is used to identify and explicitly report the designers’ flow of inquiries associated with experimental and decision-making activities. These inquiries were acted like a series stimuli and the designers’/teams’ response to these inquiries was to perform experiment and to make Go-No-Go decisions. Search representation of a problem approach is used to present the designers’ internal representation of product design problem. The designers encoded the product design stages as initial states, intermediate states and goal states. The spaces between these states were search spaces and action spaces. Within search spaces, the designers used various kinds of uninformed and heuristic searches. In action spaces, designers performed experimental and decision-making acts. The researcher has identified the designers’ solution action sequences, search types, and types of experiments in these spaces. Also, the designers’ mental models and heuristics during experimentation are recognized. The four groups of decision-making constituents - performance parameters and critical factors, causes contributed to process of rational inference, decision-making heuristics, and factors from mental models are identified. These constituents aggregately acted as inputs to decision gates and influenced the designers’ Go-No-Go decision-making. Gestalt school of psychology approach is used to deeply look into the designers’ perception towards understanding and recognizing patterns of experimentation and decision-making by using Gestalt psychology principles.

Abstract Buying, this thing is at any corner in our modern business world. The process and relationship of goods from producers to customers is very different from the past. How to use the design of package to accelerate the buying, that is the point for producers to think. Therefore, there are many skills and ideas for design of package. By the spread thinking of “green issue”, environmentally friendly design is also important for designer to consider. A.The goal of our research is investigating how the ideas of using green package design reality, then making case studies, digging out the concept of”green” in process of package design. Finally, using the concept to make the deigns is purpose. B. The range of the review study contain packaging design, green packaging design, and the design for paper products which common use in the design world, then discussing and summing found: (A) The elements of the package design is to identify, color, symbol, display, memory and functions, and showing through color, shape, graphics and text. (B) The primary spirit of the green packaging design is to create a "closed loop", like "make-to-make" of the practice, and make the implementation by 3R (reduction, reuse, recycling), etc.. By the support of citation, we can understand the relationship of paper packing production with green cycle. Then, using the better design of paper packing can induce closer recycle to make much “green”. The third part of our research focuses on case study. We analysis the case:"2012 Taipei packaging green magic”, Taipei product packaging Assistance Program. The following is our result. For the idea of green packing to the real market, we think that the approach rate is still need to improve.Appearance of goods is very important, it transmit the green idea, attract the consumers, access to win in the business world. The green packing not only focuses on reduce the impact after consume, but also need to reduce the produce in the source, or try to use more green material. According to discuss of information from citation and case study, we design the packing and analysis the result. Here sums up our found. Besides the choice of material, the designers should try their best to give consumer a green think in the invisible message, and increase the focus to protecting environment issues; it will make better impression to the company. It is benefit to both, company and consumer. After reduce the source material and the environment impact, it will cause many limit on the design, such as simplification of the structure, material savings and principles for the use of a single material. The designers need to spark their idea to overcome the difficult and make the simply design, which is in keeping with “green”. On the level of green packing design, cases in case study or our designs after analysis, they cannot reach the 100% approach rate in real business world. The main reason is due to the different requires of properties qualities, sales demands of the product itself and the packaging design. Although the achieving proportional to the degree of product packaging green. But it will still be affected because the product or brand itself demands of.

Santos, Ângelo Emanuel Neves dos. "Design and simulation of a smart bottle with fill-level sensing based on oxide TFT technology." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/19593.

Full text
Abstract:
Packaging is an important element responsible for brand growth and one of the main rea-sons for producers to gain competitive advantages through technological innovation. In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Mask layouts were already designed and are currently in fabrication, foreseeing a suc-cessful circuit fabrication, and a major step towards the design and integration of complex trans-ducer systems using oxide TFTs technology.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the optimization of flexibility in production systems. The problems associated with sugar production, at the Sugar Industry of Jamaica, is used as a case study. The lack of flexible packaging machinery is identified as a component of these problems. The paper proceeds to assemble a system capable of effectively accomplishing the packaging of bags of various sizes. A simulation of the system using petri nets is used to validate this project.

Abstract:
Solid oral Methotrexate (Methotrexate in tablet form) has been used for many years as an effective measure to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis and severe psoriasis. When taken at the right frequency and dose Methotrexate is a safe medication. However, in the community in the UK between 1993 and 2000, Methotrexate has been implicated in the deaths of some 25 patients and a further 26 cases of serious harm which have required hospitalisation [1,2]. In 2003 the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) began a programme of work to investigate the causes of errors with Methotrexate and to develop and implement solutions in response. Since then, three projects have been undertaken: • The development of a new patient treatment diary; • An investigation of IT systems in GP’s surgeries and community pharmacies; and • An assessment of the packaging and labelling of Methotrexate with patients and healthcare practitioners and the identification of changes which should improve patient safety. This paper describes the research and results from the third project.

Abstract:
In this 1-year feasibility study, we tried polymerization of several different monomers, commercial as well as novel, specially designed and synthesized for this project in the presence of the nitrate ion to produce imprinted conductive polymers. Polymers 1 and 2 (shown below) produced a response to nitrate, but one inferior to that produced by a polypyrrole (Ppy)-based sensor (which we demonstrated prior to this study). Thus, we elected to proceed with improving the stability of the Ppy-based sensor. In order to improve stability of the Ppy-based sensor, we created a two-layer design which includes nitrate-doped Ppy as an inner layer, and nitrate-doped PEDOT as the outer layer. PEDOT is known for its high environmental stability and conductivity. This design has demonstrated promise, but is still undergoing optimization and stability testing. Previously we had failed to create nitrate-doped PEDOT in the absence of a Ppy layer. Nitrate-doped PEDOT should be very promising for sensor applications due to its high stability and exceptional sensing properties as we showed previously for sensing of perchlorate ions (by perchlorate-doped PEDOT). During this year, we have succeeded in preparing nitrate-doped PEDOT (4 below) by designing a new starting monomer (compound 3 below) for polymerization. We are currently testing this design for nitrate sensing. In parallel with the fabrication design studies, we fabricated and tested nitrate-doped Ppy sensors in a series of flow studies under laboratory and field conditions. Nitrate-doped Ppy sensors are less stable than is desirable but provide excellent nitrate sensing characteristics for the short-term experiments focusing on packaging and deployment strategies. The fabricated sensors were successfully interfaced with a commercial battery-powered self-logging (Onset Computer Hobo Datalogger) and a wireless data acquisition and transmission system (Crossbow Technologies MDA300 sensor interface and Mica2 wireless mote). In a series of flow-through experiments with water, the nitrate-doped Ppy sensors were exposed to pulses of dissolved nitrate and compared favorably with an expensive commercial sensor. In 24-hour field tests in both Merced and in Palmdale, CA agricultural soils, the sensors responded to introduced nitrate pulses, but with different dynamics relative to the larger commercial sensors. These experiments are on-going but suggest a form factor (size, shape) effect of the sensor when deployed in a porous medium such as soil. To fill the need for a miniature reference electrode, we identified and tested one commercial version (Cypress Systems, ESA Mini-reference electrode) which works well but is expensive ($190). To create an inexpensive miniature reference electrode, we are exploring the use of AgCl-coated silver wire. This electrode is not a “true” reference electrode; however, it can calibrated once versus a commercial reference electrode at the time of deployment in soil. Thus, only one commercial reference electrode would suffice to support a multiple sensor deployment.
