Abstract:
Edward Van Roy'sSiamese melting pot: Ethnic minorities in the making of Bangkokis a tour de force and one of the most important books on the history of Bangkok and late-modern Thai history ever to be published. It is clearly written and presented, it provides excellent maps, and brings to light little-known sources and surprising facts about the history of the most iconic neighbourhoods in the city. It exposes the histories of various Muslim, Mon, Lao, Vietnamese, Chinese, European, Indian, and other communities in late Ayutthaya and Bangkok, as well as highlights various ways of seeing Bangkok as a feudal city, a vibrant port-city, or a galactic polity. Van Roy also reveals the complexities of defining ethnicity and class in Bangkok's changing neighbourhoods. In this review article I will look closely at two issues Van Roy exposes that need some theoretical and critical interrogation: the ‘galactic polity/mandala’, and ‘ethnicity’. Then I will provide a short vignette about the Chettiar community in Bangkok and the idea of Hinduism in Bangkok history that both supports and supplements Van Roy's excellent research. I write this not to discount or criticise Van Roy's monumental achievement, but because I believe a book this important to the field deserves serious attention and engagement.

Abstract:
Due to imbalanced supplies of medical and healthcare resources between the capital city and other areas, Bangkok attracts its non-residents to access hospitals in the city only for giving births. This causes overestimation of Bangkok’s fertility rate and affects results of population projection. Therefore, this paper aims to project real Bangkok population numbers by age group and sex to 2030 by eliminating the influence of Bangkok-born outsiders. It introduces a new fertility rate calculation based on data from National Statistical Office of Thailand. The results show that in 2010 the total fertility rate of Bangkok was merely 0.8. All components being fixed, the projection displays shifts in population age structure, the age group with highest numbers from 25-34 years old in 2010 to 40-44 years old in 2030. Percent aging population expands from 9.6 to 22.6 percent. Furthermore, proportion of population aged 0-14 shrinks from 12.8 percent to 9.6 percent, which means Bangkok in 2030 is expected to face a seriously low number of young populations in opposite to its large number of elderly.

Abstract:
The word "commuter" is an American invention. In the 1840s people living in the suburbs could pay a reduced or "commuted" fare to use the trains to get into the cities. The world's worst commute is in Bangkok, Thailand, where people spend about 2 hours a day travelling to and from work. At peak times the average speed of traffic in Bangkok is 7 mph with the total number of vehicles with Bangkok license plates hitting 8.55 million, double the 4.28 registered in 2004. There is hope however as Bangkok during this period has delivered several commuter rail systems. The 15 year old ‘Skytrain’ system has just passed its 2 billionth rider while the 10 year old subway sees 240,000 riders a day. Bangkok’s newest airport ‘rail-link’ system to the suburban international airport while designed for air travelers, has become an access point for suburban commuters. With these three systems however there is no common ticketing system that allows transfer between systems, thus the reason for this paper’s research. Simple Random Sampling was used to obtain questionaries’ from 300 Bangkok commuters in which it was determined that individual decision making has the greatest influence, both directly and indirectly, on the use of a common ticketing system. External variables has the second greatest influence, again both directly and indirectly with a commuter’s personal habits influencing the decision making process in only a limited but direct way.

Abstract:
Seasonal variations in atmospheric ultrafine particulate matter (PM0.1) were monitored in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2016 to 2017. PM0.1-bound organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were collected by a cascade air sampler that can collect PM0.1 and were analyzed by a Thermal-Optical carbon analyzer following the IMPROVE-TOR protocol. The annual average PM0.1 in Bangkok was 14.5 ± 4.7 µg/m3, which is higher than in large Asian cities such as Shanghai and Hanoi. Biomass burning from neighboring areas was shown to increase the particle concentration. Apparent increases in carbon species such as OC and EC, and the OC/EC ratios in the wet and dry seasons were observed; the Char-EC/Soot-EC ratio revealed that the PM0.1 in the Bangkok atmosphere was influenced mainly by vehicle exhausts, even though the influence of biomass burning was greater during the dry season. The effective carbon ratio (ECR) shows that Bangkok’s carbonaceous aerosol is light-absorbing and -scattering. The higher SOC/OC in the dry season indicates the high level of secondary sources forming smaller particles from the combustion sources in Bangkok, increasing light scattering during these periods, and contributing to climate and air quality. The findings of this work are of great importance to air pollutant control policies in urban areas.

Abstract:
The objectives of this research article are as follows: 1) to study land use regulations with respect to environmental management under the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan of 2013, and 2) to study people’s opinions about environmental management policies stipulated in the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan of 2013. Results from analysis of the main points in the comprehensive plan and a questionnaire show that although some aspects of the plan promote economic development in the Bangkok’s central business district, the environmental management regulations concerning this area are only stated in the land use zoning plan, the open space plan, the transportation plan, and the public utility plan. Consequently, the people surveyed were found to be most satisfied with the flood and water management strategy. However, more than 70% of respondents did not know about the biotope area factor (BAF) and floor area ratio bonus (FAR Bonus). This could be due to the plan not being achieved in practice. Guidelines for preparations for the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan in the future, besides having more strict penalties and incentives, as some have recommended, should include, people affected being informed about urban planning measures in an extensive and simple way.

Bangkok, Thailand is in a unique position to benefit economically and has become one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, due to its function as a hub for international travel in Southeast Asia. Thus, this study examines how past experiences, age, income, gender, education level, occupation, and regions affect international tourists’ reasons to visit Bangkok. After conducting chi-square analysis on 400 participants, significant differences were found among the varying income levels, occupations, education levels, and regions of origin and their reasons for visiting Bangkok. However, no significant differences were found based on age and gender regarding reasons to visit Bangkok. As far as regions of origin, Europeans were most likely to visit Bangkok as a stopover in route to another destination. This lays the foundations for further research focusing on what Bangkok can do to increase their status as a destination for European travelers.

This paper presents an experimental investigation on the failure surface and plastic potential in deviatoric plane of Bangkok Clay. The results of torsional shear hollow cylinder and triaxial tests with various principal stress directions and magnitudes of intermediate principal stress on undisturbed Bangkok Clay specimens are presented. The obtained stress-strain behaviors assert clear evidences of anisotropic characteristics of Bangkok Clay. Both failure surface and plastic potential in deviatoric plane of Bangkok Clay are demonstrated as isotropic and of circular shape (Drucker-Prager type) which implies an associated flow rule. Concerning the behavior of Bangkok Clay found from this study, the discussions on the effects of employed constitutive modeling approach on the resulting numerical analysis are made.

Abstract:
This paper examines whether minimum parking requirements affect parking provision in condominiums and what factors determine condominiums’ parking capacities. By calculating actual, required, and excess parking capacities, the paper finds that almost 90% of the sample condominiums in Bangkok and the surrounding municipalities in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region provide more parking spaces than required by law. The parking capacities in condominiums outside Bangkok are almost as high as those in Bangkok, despite their required minimums being half those of Bangkok. Only 11% of the sample condominiums provide the required minimums. The figure has decreased to zero in recent years, likely because of soaring land prices. These results suggest that developers’ decisions to provide parking are not determined by parking requirements but by market demand. Results from regression analyses show that parking capacities are determined by total floor area and number of dwelling units in a project, distance to the nearest transit station, and average unit price. Condominiums located in Bangkok are found to provide significantly more parking spaces than those in the suburban municipalities. This result has important policy implications for transit-oriented development, considering that accessibility to public transit is much better in Bangkok than the suburban areas.

Transit traffic represents a huge and potential tourism market. Stopover tourism is a new type of tourism based on partnerships between airlines, airports, and tourism organizations. This study focuses on the mutual influences between the aviation industry and stopover tourism, the motivation of stopover tourists in Bangkok, the constraints and challenges of development of stopover in Bangkok, and the tourism opportunities and attractiveness of stopover to better understand the importance and determine the development prospects of it by qualitative analysis methods, semi-structured in-depth interviews with specific four groups of 19 people highly relevant to stopover during February-March 2020, then applied content analysis methods to encode, identify, filter, logically transform, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions. This study finds that the rapid development of Bangkok's air transport industry and outbound tourism of developing countries have laid a solid foundation for the establishment of stopover tourism.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese immigrants constituted up to 50% of the population in Bangkok. Beyond their religious role, Chinese temples served as community centers, fostering social connections, news exchange, and providing entertainment for newcomers in the Thai capital. With archival records scarce, the preserved epigraphy within these temples emerges as a crucial historical source. This article revisits Wolfgang Franke’s documented sites from the 1970s and 1980s, finding that the inscribed objects generally remain intact, and indicating stability in Bangkok’s Chinese temple culture over the last fifty years. Addressing the lack of a comprehensive listing of Chinese temples and their locations, the article presents a geo-referenced survey, significantly expanding previous lists. The survey data are available online as supplemental material, contributing to the documentation of Chinese religious sites in Southeast Asia. The article concludes by reflecting on the historical evolution of temple construction in Bangkok.

Which, remote sensing was used to do the land survey and automatically map urban land cover from Landsat time-series satellite imagery. Then, the change of urban area and Bangkok Comprehensive Plan were compared by GIS. And, the results showed that urban area in Bangkok increased 403.99 km2 over the past 21 years. While rural and agricultural zone in Bangkok Comprehensive Plan decreased due to residential area expansion. So, Area Division System and the district plan from urban planning system of Japan can solve the problems by developing the city and controlling urban areas expansion.

Abstract:
The paper aims to investigate how Bangkok is represented in contemporary Thai literature, including those works by such authors of renown as Chamlong Fangcholachit, Prabda Yoon, and Paritas Hutangkul. Through the perspectives of these contemporary authors, Bangkok has been used as a poignant setting to showcase the problems and conditions of urbanism in Thailand. The paper aims to focus on three main issues of representation, which are not completely separated but closely intertwined: (1) Bangkok as a hub of globalization, where cultural forces, especially those from the West, clash with local knowledge and wisdom; (2) Bangkok as a major tourist destination, where the tourist’s imagination of Bangkok and Thailand as an exotic place jars with the realities they actually face upon their arrival; and (3) Bangkok as a city of capitalism and consumerism, where urban people define themselves through their conspicuous consumption. Contemporary Thai literature, especially those works in the last two decades, make manifest the complexity of these three issues as well as how these issues affect urban dwellers in their everyday life.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective The interference of the hemoglobin variant (Hb J-Bangkok) was evaluated on 4 different glycated hemoglobin assays and compared with a reference immuno assay. Methods An overall test of coincidence of 2 least-squares linear regression lines was performed to determine whether the presence of Hb J-Bangkok caused a statistically significant difference in HbA1c results compared with a reference immuno assay. Statistical analysis was performed on the difference of the estimated average glucose calculated from HbA1c values and fasting plasma glucose in the Hb J-Bangkok variant group using the different detection systems. Deming regression analysis was used to determinate whether Hb J-Bangkok had a significant interference on HbA1c results using an HbA1c±10% relative bias at 6% and 9% HbA1c as evaluation limits. Results Turbidimetric inhibition immunoassay method, and enzymatic methods were not affected by Hb J-Bangkok. However, Hb J-Bangkok showed statistically significant interference to the two ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography methods. Conclusion When performing HbA1c tests, clinical laboratory personnel should identify the Hb variant and select the appropriate methods or use alternative indicators.

Abstract:
Abstract This article builds a framework for considering the place of contemporary performance groups in 21st century Bangkok. It grounds performance groups in ensembles of performance practices developed by groups as part of their unique performance cultures. The varied ensembles of performance practice of three such groups – the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company, the 8X8 Theatre Group, and the B-Floor Artist Collective – are embodied in these groups’ distinctive interactive performance styles and tied to the different creative spaces where they work. The groups’ artistic practices and their working spaces are produced within larger ecologies of performance spanning the urban landscape of 21st century Bangkok. The article suggests this framework as a richer way to study performance cultures in Thailand. Relating the performance landscape of Bangkok’s contemporary theatre scene to the embodied artistic practices of different groups shows how their unique performance cultures help to enliven the city’s distinctive cultural ecology of performance.

Abstract:
This research examines how Bangkok’s planning policy supports cultural adequacy in Nang Loeng, an historic community in Bangkok that is trying to utilise its cultural heritage to achieve housing security in the face of planned developments, such as the building of a new urban rail (MRT) station. The research, through the analyses of the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan (B.E. 2019) and the master plan for the conservation and development of Krung Rattanakosin (Update B.E. 2020), site visits, cultural mapping, and in-depth interviews, uses the framework of cultural adequacy to examine how the current plans and policies consider the cultural heritage of the area and highlight opportunities for enhancing cultural adequacy in the neighbourhood. This research has found that improvements can be made in terms of supporting and valorizing the intangible cultural heritage of Nang Loeng; this cultural heritage was not captured in the development of current plans. Suggestions include comprehensive planning that relies on increased collaboration with area residents and cultural institutions, and the creation of a database for documenting the neighborhood’s intangible heritage.

Abstract:
This study investigated recent changes in migration and population structure of the Greater Bangkok considering the impact of economic globalization. The spatial policy of the Thai government has lead newer investments for manufacturing to locate away from Bangkok Metropolis and thereby the industrial structure of Bangkok Metropolis has gradually turned into service-dominated, while the region surrounding Bangkok Metropolis has attracted factories mainly owned by foreign capital. Light industry and electronics industry are con-centrated in the adjacent provinces to Bangkok Metropolis and the heavy and petrochemical industry tends to be located in the outer zone of the surrounding region. The service sector and light industry as well as electronics industry prefer female workers and Bangkok met-ropolis and the adjoining provinces have become female-dominated population structure while male workers tend to gather in the outer zone attracted by heavy and petrochemical industry. It is possible to mention accordingly that the unbalanced spatial distribution of sex structure of population which might cause changes in the norm to the family formation in future is one of the consequences of economic globalization of Thailand, which the inves-tment promotion policy of the government did not assume.

Abstract:
In Bangkok, e-scooters have become one of the transportation options for many users. Despite the growing number of users, e-scooters remain illegal to operate on public roads. The absence of regulations raises concerns about the safety of utilizing e-scooters in Bangkok. This paper aims to explore the safety challenges associated with the use of e-scoters in Bangkok, based on the practice of users and the infrastructure condition. Semi-structured interview with purposive sampling is conducted for Group A (n=6) and Group B (n=2) to discover the situation from the perspective of users, supplier, and service provider. Additionally, a combination of user interviews and field observations was conducted to assess the infrastructure. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the interview data, leading to the identification of four themes: infrastructure condition, users practice, accident experience, and maintaining safety. The findings reveal that both user practices and infrastructure conditions contribute to the safety of e-scooters utilization in Bangkok. These include dispersed speed usage, unsafe space choice, and the lack of bike lane availability. To improve safety, Bangkok needs more bike lanes and parking spaces, standardized e-scooters use, and e-scooters education platforms. Policymakers must consider regulating and standardizing the use of e-scooters in Bangkok for its safety.

Abstract:
The land deformation in line of sight (LOS) direction can be measured using time series InSAR. InSAR can successfully measure land subsidence based on LOS in many big cities, including the eastern and western regions of Bangkok which is separated by Chao Phraya River. There are differences in prosperity between both sides due to human activities, land use, and land cover. This study focuses on the land subsidence difference between the western and eastern regions of Bangkok and the most possible cause affecting the land subsidence rates. The Radarsat-2 single look complex (SLC) was used to set up the time series data for long term monitoring. To generate interferograms, StaMPS for Time Series InSAR processing was applied by using the PSI algorithm in DORIS software. It was found that the subsidence was more to the eastern regions of Bangkok where the vertical displacements were +0.461 millimetres and -0.919 millimetres on the western and the eastern side respectively. The districts of Nong Chok, Lat Krabang, and Khlong Samwa have the most extensive farming area in eastern Bangkok. Besides, there were also three major industrial estates located in eastern Bangkok like Lat Krabang, Anya Thani and Bang Chan Industrial Estate. By the assumption of water demand, there were forty-eight wells and three wells found in the eastern and western part respectively. The number of groundwater wells shows that eastern Bangkok has the demand for water over the west, and the pumping of groundwater is a significant factor that causes land subsidence in the area. Keywords: Subsidence, InSAR, Radarsat-2, Bangkok

Abstract:
Bangkok is not only Thailand’s political, economic and administrative capital, but also a regional and global hub. In recent decades, it has transformed from a compact urban core into a sprawling megacity. Today, in addition to the original centre, the city also extends into its five neighboring provinces and forms a single agglomeration, the Bangkok Metropolitan Region: around 15% of the country’s population resides here. However, alongside its economic and demographic vitality, Bangkok is highly vulnerable to climate change and other environmental issues. In particular, due to the ‘three waters’ of runoff, rain and sea rise, together with its low-lying topography of 1.0-2.0 meters, much of the capital is prone to inundation. This research draws analysis on the 2006 and 2010 flood and profiles the causes of the 2006 and 2010 flooding and presents four case study districts in the eastern suburbs of Bangkok: Min Buri, Nong Jork, Lat Krabang and Klong Samwa. Each of them has distinct physical, social and economic characteristics, yet all were impacted to varying degrees by the flooding and reflect Bangkok’s rapid urbanization in their mix of agricultural, industrial and residential uses. The areas also illustrate the experience of residents living outside the inner city’s established polder system. The results highlight the importance of a localized analysis of the impacts of flooding, as both the intensity and the nature of its effects vary considerably from district to district. Of the four, Minburi was the worst affected, particularly as residents suffered loss of livelihood as a result of the economic disruption and health threats. As with the other districts, the indirect costs of the flooding at times exceeded the direct physical damage, though this is not generally recognized in official assessments. The research findings highlighted the significance of work absence as a major indirect cost: while the impact on individual households was relatively moderate, the agricultural sector was severely affected. Medical care was another indirect expense for inundated communities with the spread of diseases such as dengue fever and foot-and-mouth disease.

Abstract:
Survey results of this study have showed that: The Chinese new immigrants in Bangkok have a consistency on ethnic identity; they all agree that they are Chinese. However, on the national identity and cultural identity, the identity of them has multi-tendency. There are 45.29% respondents identify China, 30.63% respondents identify Thailand, and 24.08% respondents identify both China and Thailand. The degree of identifying China of them has declined with the increase of their settlement years in Bangkok; however, their degree of identifying Thailand has increased with the increase of settlement years in Bangkok. The cultural identity is very complicated, they are increasingly accepting and identifying Thai culture with the increase of their settlement years in Bangkok; however, they did not deny or abandon Chinese culture, lots of people still identify Chinese culture. Especially in the identity of traditional culture, in general, the degree of identifying Chinese traditional culture of them has declined with the increase of their settlement years in Bangkok; however, the proportion of people who identify Chinese traditional culture is still much higher than people who identify Thai traditional culture.
