Abstract:
Edward Van Roy'sSiamese melting pot: Ethnic minorities in the making of Bangkokis a tour de force and one of the most important books on the history of Bangkok and late-modern Thai history ever to be published. It is clearly written and presented, it provides excellent maps, and brings to light little-known sources and surprising facts about the history of the most iconic neighbourhoods in the city. It exposes the histories of various Muslim, Mon, Lao, Vietnamese, Chinese, European, Indian, and other communities in late Ayutthaya and Bangkok, as well as highlights various ways of seeing Bangkok as a feudal city, a vibrant port-city, or a galactic polity. Van Roy also reveals the complexities of defining ethnicity and class in Bangkok's changing neighbourhoods. In this review article I will look closely at two issues Van Roy exposes that need some theoretical and critical interrogation: the ‘galactic polity/mandala’, and ‘ethnicity’. Then I will provide a short vignette about the Chettiar community in Bangkok and the idea of Hinduism in Bangkok history that both supports and supplements Van Roy's excellent research. I write this not to discount or criticise Van Roy's monumental achievement, but because I believe a book this important to the field deserves serious attention and engagement.

Abstract:
Due to imbalanced supplies of medical and healthcare resources between the capital city and other areas, Bangkok attracts its non-residents to access hospitals in the city only for giving births. This causes overestimation of Bangkok’s fertility rate and affects results of population projection. Therefore, this paper aims to project real Bangkok population numbers by age group and sex to 2030 by eliminating the influence of Bangkok-born outsiders. It introduces a new fertility rate calculation based on data from National Statistical Office of Thailand. The results show that in 2010 the total fertility rate of Bangkok was merely 0.8. All components being fixed, the projection displays shifts in population age structure, the age group with highest numbers from 25-34 years old in 2010 to 40-44 years old in 2030. Percent aging population expands from 9.6 to 22.6 percent. Furthermore, proportion of population aged 0-14 shrinks from 12.8 percent to 9.6 percent, which means Bangkok in 2030 is expected to face a seriously low number of young populations in opposite to its large number of elderly.

Abstract:
The word "commuter" is an American invention. In the 1840s people living in the suburbs could pay a reduced or "commuted" fare to use the trains to get into the cities. The world's worst commute is in Bangkok, Thailand, where people spend about 2 hours a day travelling to and from work. At peak times the average speed of traffic in Bangkok is 7 mph with the total number of vehicles with Bangkok license plates hitting 8.55 million, double the 4.28 registered in 2004. There is hope however as Bangkok during this period has delivered several commuter rail systems. The 15 year old ‘Skytrain’ system has just passed its 2 billionth rider while the 10 year old subway sees 240,000 riders a day. Bangkok’s newest airport ‘rail-link’ system to the suburban international airport while designed for air travelers, has become an access point for suburban commuters. With these three systems however there is no common ticketing system that allows transfer between systems, thus the reason for this paper’s research. Simple Random Sampling was used to obtain questionaries’ from 300 Bangkok commuters in which it was determined that individual decision making has the greatest influence, both directly and indirectly, on the use of a common ticketing system. External variables has the second greatest influence, again both directly and indirectly with a commuter’s personal habits influencing the decision making process in only a limited but direct way.

Abstract:
Seasonal variations in atmospheric ultrafine particulate matter (PM0.1) were monitored in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2016 to 2017. PM0.1-bound organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were collected by a cascade air sampler that can collect PM0.1 and were analyzed by a Thermal-Optical carbon analyzer following the IMPROVE-TOR protocol. The annual average PM0.1 in Bangkok was 14.5 ± 4.7 µg/m3, which is higher than in large Asian cities such as Shanghai and Hanoi. Biomass burning from neighboring areas was shown to increase the particle concentration. Apparent increases in carbon species such as OC and EC, and the OC/EC ratios in the wet and dry seasons were observed; the Char-EC/Soot-EC ratio revealed that the PM0.1 in the Bangkok atmosphere was influenced mainly by vehicle exhausts, even though the influence of biomass burning was greater during the dry season. The effective carbon ratio (ECR) shows that Bangkok’s carbonaceous aerosol is light-absorbing and -scattering. The higher SOC/OC in the dry season indicates the high level of secondary sources forming smaller particles from the combustion sources in Bangkok, increasing light scattering during these periods, and contributing to climate and air quality. The findings of this work are of great importance to air pollutant control policies in urban areas.

Abstract:
The objectives of this research article are as follows: 1) to study land use regulations with respect to environmental management under the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan of 2013, and 2) to study people’s opinions about environmental management policies stipulated in the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan of 2013. Results from analysis of the main points in the comprehensive plan and a questionnaire show that although some aspects of the plan promote economic development in the Bangkok’s central business district, the environmental management regulations concerning this area are only stated in the land use zoning plan, the open space plan, the transportation plan, and the public utility plan. Consequently, the people surveyed were found to be most satisfied with the flood and water management strategy. However, more than 70% of respondents did not know about the biotope area factor (BAF) and floor area ratio bonus (FAR Bonus). This could be due to the plan not being achieved in practice. Guidelines for preparations for the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan in the future, besides having more strict penalties and incentives, as some have recommended, should include, people affected being informed about urban planning measures in an extensive and simple way.

Chirattikalwong, Anawat. "Natural ventilation and solar control : design analysis of suburban Bangkok housing estates." Virtual Press, 2007. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1365783.

Full text
Abstract:
The housing estates boom was and is a result of the Southeast Asia economic growth after the economic crisis between 1997 and 1998. Housing estates, especially in the suburbs of Bangkok, are designed by considering only aesthetics and costs without considering the negative effects that might occur to the occupants and nature. These negative effects lead to the insufficiency energy crisis.Determining how to reduce the energy used and increase the living quality in the building type is the critical question for architects to answer. Redesigning the housing estate using sustainable design concepts, especially with a focus on the natural ventilation and shading device strategies, can lift up the occupants' living quality because such design can provide cross ventilation through the house and solar shading to reduce the heat gain in the house. Not only would such design improvements make houses more comfortable for inhabitants, they also would reduce the energy use.The methodologies of research start with spatial analyses to define the general character of this type of house, then the redesigning of a selected existing house is used to focus on natural ventilation and shading devices design in order to improve the occupants living quality and to reduce the energy used in the house. It is hoped that this project can be the first step for other architects to understand the logic of natural ventilation and shading control design strategies within the realm of sustainability.

Tirapas, Chamnarn. "Daylighting of the Bangkok townhouse : facade design and spatial improvement guidelines." Virtual Press, 2004. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1292547.

Full text
Abstract:
Bangkok's dramatic growth in the last three decades has brought with it a wide range of urban problems - economic, architectural, environmental, and social. One problem has been a demand for a new dwelling and work spaces. The Bangkok townhouse has served to meet both needs, but the forms it has taken thus far leaves needs improvement. This creative project proposes improvements to the Bangkok townhouses to make it more responsive to its environment as well as interior functions. The improvements focus on facades, reorganization of interior spaces, and physical townhouse elements. The study uses a typological and environmental study to understand and investigate examples of existing Bangkok townhouses. This includes case study analyses to suggest daylighting design strategies for design applications. This study proposes a facade design guideline and a set of physical arrangement suggestions for enhancing the daylight, ventilation, and accommodation capacity of the Bangkok townhouses. In addition, potential applications of the facade guidelines are illustrated. The facade and physical arrangement guidelines can be a fundamental concept for further development and improvement of the Bangkok and other townhouses in locations throughout Thailand.

Abstract:
Although the issues concerning urban design have attracted much attention in the last decade, and the context of urban design is better understood, several critiques of the manner in which contemporary urban design is practised and researched remain persistent. Responding to this issue and the continuity of urban problems, the search for an alternative urban design should be continued. The basic research goal of this thesis was to alleviate the problems of urban design intervention and practice. It aimed to do this by searching for an urban design process that leads to the successful improvement of the urban environment, whilst respecting the needs of people through an urban design project. The thesis objectives examine the urban design process and assess the urban design product as a result of urban intervention. In this way, the relationship between the urban design process and product is revealed. It then formulates an explanatory synthesis of the main factors that have influenced the success of the urban design project. The main research findings show that there is a strong relationship between the urban design process and users' satisfaction with the urban design product. Specifically, it can be concluded that the degree of shared objectives between the residents and local authorities is the main factor in achieving a successful urban design project. In this sense, the results support the thesis hypothesis 'The success of urban design projects depends upon the degree of shared objectives between the users (residents) and producers (local authorities)'. At project level, it seems that the physical and environmental problems provide the central motivation for urban design intervention in the city. In terms of design content, the results show that the improvement of physical function and visual perception are always mentioned as the main project's objectives. In contrast, compared with other substantive urban design aspects, the social aspect is likely to be less considered. Finally, the research findings imply that, in some way, the political and economic contexts of the city influence the urban design intervention.

Without the informal economy, there would be no waste recycling in most Asian cities. In many Asian countries, waste management systems are underdeveloped, with the informal economy dominating the processes of waste collection, sorting and recycling. In this short report, we present preliminary findings from our survey of 34 waste pickers in Bangkok. The report sheds light on their working conditions, health risks, gendered dimensions and the challenges they face in waste recycling.

Abstract:
This study underscored the importance of waste as a resource that supports the livelihoods of many urban stakeholders in Bangkok. Examining drivers of household behaviour provides important insights into how to promote more sustainable behaviour. However, possibilities for individual behaviour change are constrained by factors including societal norms, lack of easy opportunities and lack of incentives. Policymakers have a leading role to play in piloting more efficient and circular waste structures, regulating industry and creating an enabling environment for sustainable behaviour, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The construction of the Kunming–Bangkok Expressway, in particular, led to local economic growth and higher regional specialization in accordance with comparative advantage, facilitating market integration across borders in the Greater Mekong Subregion.
