Abstract:
Since industrial and human activities have been developed, water quality intensely degrades in Hilla River, Iraq. Using remote sensing technology provides data for assessing and monitoring water quality in surface water bodies. Thus, in this study, Landsat 8 satellite images (2016 to 2021) were statistically tested for developing linear models capable of estimating water quality parameters in the river based on field data, including turbidity (turb), electric conductivity (EC), hydrogen ions (pH), total suspended solids (TSS), chloride ions (Cl), sulfate ions (SO4), Alkalinity (ALK), total hardness (TH), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), and total dissolved solids (TDS). The results showed that seven parameters have a significant relationship with the spectral bands ratio (p-value less than 0.05). Some of them (TDS, SO4, and ALK) are positively correlated with bands ratio (Band10/Band3, Band10/Band3 and Band10/Band4, and Band3/Band7), respectively. Others (Mg, Ca, TH and pH) are inversely correlated with (Band4/Band7, Band1/Band4, Band1/Band4, and Band1/Band2), respectively. However, K, Na, TDS, Cl, EC and turb have an insignificant correlation with any band ratio.

The ability to distinguish between erratic and systematic patterns of change in case count data is crucial for assessing and projecting the course of disease outbreaks. Here, it is shown that measuring the strength of trends can provide information that is not readily captured by commonly used descriptive indicators. In combination with the 7-day moving average, Bandt and Pompe's permutation entropy and Wilder's relative strength index were found to support the timely detection of coronavirus epidemic trends and transitions in data from various countries. The results demonstrate that measuring the strength of epidemic growth trends in addition to their magnitude can significantly enhance disease surveillance.

In this paper, we introduce a geometric notion of seminormal structure on a nonempty, bounded, closed, and convex pair of subsets of a Banach spaceX. It is shown that if (A,B) is a nonempty, weakly compact, and convex pair and (A,B) has seminormal structure, then a cyclic relatively nonexpansive mappingT:A∪B→A∪Bhas a fixed point. Since the appearance in China of the first cases, the entire world has been deeply affected by the flagellum of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic. There have been many mathematical approaches trying to characterize the data collected about this serious issue. One of the most important aspects for attacking a problem is knowing what information is really available. We investigate here the information contained in the COVID-19 data of infected and deceased people in all countries, using informational quantifiers such as entropy and statistical complexity. For the evaluation of these quantities, we use the Bandt–Pompe permutation methodology, as well as the wavelet transform, to obtain the corresponding probability distributions from the available series of data. The period analyzed covers from the appearance of the disease up to the massive use of anti-COVID vaccines.

Abstract:
AbstractBy the theory of Douady and Hubbard, the structure of Julia sets of quadratic maps is tightly connected with the angle-doubling maphon the circleT. In particular, a connected and locally connected Julia set can be considered as a topological factorT/ ≈ ofTwith respect to a specialh-invariant equivalence relation ≈ onT, which is called Julia equivalence by Keller. Following an idea of Thurston, Bandt and Keller have investigated a map α →αfromTonto the set of all Julia equivalences, which gives a natural abstract description of the Mandelbrot set. By the use of a symbol sequence called the kneading sequence of the point α, they gave a topological classification of the abstract Julia setsT/α. It turns out thatT/αcontains simple closed curves iff the point α has a periodic kneading sequence. The present article characterizes the set of points possessing a periodic kneading sequence and discusses this set in relation to Julia sets and to the Mandelbrot set.

Abstract:
Ordinal patterns classifying real vectors according to the order relations between their components are an interesting basic concept for determining the complexity of a measure-preserving dynamical system. In particular, as shown by C. Bandt, G. Keller and B. Pompe, the permutation entropy based on the probability distributions of such patterns is equal to Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy in simple one-dimensional systems. The general reason for this is that, roughly speaking, the system of ordinal patterns obtained for a real-valued “measuring arrangement” has high potential for separating orbits. Starting from a slightly different approach of A. Antoniouk, K. Keller and S. Maksymenko, we discuss the generalizations of ordinal patterns providing enough separation to determine the Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy. For defining these generalized ordinal patterns, the idea is to substitute the basic binary relation ≤ on the real numbers by another binary relation. Generalizing the former results of I. Stolz and K. Keller, we establish conditions that the binary relation and the dynamical system have to fulfill so that the obtained generalized ordinal patterns can be used for estimating the Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy.

Abstract:
In 1985, Barnsley and Harrington defined a ‘Mandelbrot Set’${\mathcal{M}}$for pairs of similarities: this is the set of complex numbers$z$with$0<|z|<1$for which the limit set of the semigroup generated by the similarities$$\begin{eqnarray}x\mapsto zx\quad \text{and}\quad x\mapsto z(x-1)+1\end{eqnarray}$$is connected. Equivalently,${\mathcal{M}}$is the closure of the set of roots of polynomials with coefficients in$\{-1,0,1\}$. Barnsley and Harrington already noted the (numerically apparent) existence of infinitely many small ‘holes’ in${\mathcal{M}}$, and conjectured that these holes were genuine. These holes are very interesting, since they are ‘exotic’ components of the space of (2-generator) Schottky semigroups. The existence of at least one hole was rigorously confirmed by Bandt in 2002, and he conjectured that the interior points are dense away from the real axis. We introduce the technique oftrapsto construct and certify interior points of${\mathcal{M}}$, and use them to prove Bandt’s conjecture. Furthermore, our techniques let us certify the existence of infinitely many holes in${\mathcal{M}}$.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of information measures for model selection in geophysical models with subgrid parameterizations is examined. Although the resolved dynamical equations of atmospheric or oceanic global numerical models are well established, the development and evaluation of parameterizations that represent subgrid-scale effects pose a big challenge. For climate studies, the parameters or parameterizations are usually selected according to a root-mean-square error criterion that measures the differences between the model-state evolution and observations along the trajectory. However, inaccurate initial conditions and systematic model errors contaminate root-mean-square error measures. In this work, information theory quantifiers, in particular Shannon entropy, statistical complexity, and Jensen–Shannon divergence, are evaluated as measures of the model dynamics. An ordinal analysis is conducted using the Bandt–Pompe symbolic data reduction in the signals. The proposed ordinal information measures are examined in the two-scale Lorenz-96 system. By comparing the two-scale Lorenz-96 system signals with a one-scale Lorenz-96 system with deterministic and stochastic parameterizations, the study shows that information measures are able to select the correct model and to distinguish the parameterizations, including the degree of stochasticity that results in the closest model dynamics to the two-scale Lorenz-96 system.

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to analyze in the Entropy–Complexity plane (HxC) time series coming from ECG, with the objective to discriminate recordings from two different groups of patients: normal sinus rhythm and cardiac arrhythmias. The HxC plane used in this study was constituted by Shannon’s Entropy as one of its axes, and the other was composed using statistical complexity. To compute the entropy, the probability distribution function (PDF) of the observed data was obtained using the methodology proposed by Bandt and Pompe (2002). The database used in the present study was the ECG recordings obtained from PhysioNet, 47 long-term signals of patients with diagnosed cardiac arrhythmias and 18 long-term signals from normal sinus rhythm patients were processed. Average values of statistical complexity and normalized Shannon entropy were calculated and analyzed in the HxC plane for each time series. The average values of complexity of ECG for patients with diagnosed arrhythmias were bigger than normal sinus rhythm group. On the other hand, the Shannon entropy average values for arrhythmias patients were lower than the normal sinus rhythm group. This characteristic made it possible to discriminate the position of both signals’ groups in the HxC plane. The results were analyzed through a multivariate statistical test hypothesis. The methodology proposed has a remarkable conceptual simplicity, and shows a promising efficiency in the detection of cardiovascular pathologies.

Some alterations of similar spectral reflectances cannot be distinguished accurately for their lower spectral resolution when the traditional methods, such as, band ratio and principal component analysis are used to extract alteration information from Landsat ETM multi-spectral data. In this paper, the band1~band7 of MODIS whose wave lengths are among 10~500nm, together with ETM’s multi-spectral bands, whose spatial resolutions are 30m, are chosen in the execution of data assimilation. After the third order wavelet transformation, the low-frequency component of ETM data are replaced by the MODIS data subsequently, then the inverse wavelet transform is in progress. The result of data assimilation consists of not only ETM’s spatial information but also MODIS’ spectral information. At last, four bands of assimilation results are selected to process PCA transform, as a result, two types of alteration in the study area are extracted accurately according to their components.

AbstractWe consider linear iterated function systems (IFS) with a constant contraction ratio in the plane for which the ‘overlap set’ 𝒪 is finite, and which are ‘invertible’ on the attractor A, in the sense that there is a continuous surjection q:A→A whose inverse branches are the contractions of the IFS. The overlap set is the critical set in the sense that q is not a local homeomorphism precisely at 𝒪. We suppose also that there is a rational function p with the Julia set J such that (A,q) and (J,p) are conjugate. We prove that if A has bounded turning and p has no parabolic cycles, then the conjugacy is quasisymmetric. This result is applied to some specific examples including an uncountable family. Our main focus is on the family of IFS {λz,λz+1} where λ is a complex parameter in the unit disk, such that its attractor Aλ is a dendrite, which happens whenever 𝒪 is a singleton. C. Bandt observed that a simple modification of such an IFS (without changing the attractor) is invertible and gives rise to a quadratic-like map qλ on Aλ. If the IFS is post-critically finite, then a result of A. Kameyama shows that there is a quadratic map pc (z)=z2 +c, with the Julia set Jc such that (Aλ,qλ) and (Jc,pc) are conjugate. We prove that this conjugacy is quasisymmetric and obtain partial results in the general (not post-critically finite) case.

During this process, dust storm makes some impact on marine ecology and region climate, and the present of Asian dust aerosols over ocean takes some difficult for cloud detection, atmosphere correction of ocean color and sea surface temperature retrieval. Study on Asian dust aerosol properties over ocean is the basis of satellite remote sensing, which is a powerful tool to study dust over ocean. In this paper, the optical and thermal properties of Asian dust aerosol are presented by combining the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations and Streamer model simulations. By compare, the reflectance of dust aerosol over ocean at the visible band2, band3 and the near-infrared band6 of MODIS have some significant features, which are different from others, it satisfies Rb3<Rb6<Rb2 for strong dust aerosol over ocean, the weak dust aerosol meets Rb6<Rb2<Rb3, and the dust reflectance is from 0.1 to 0.3. At the thermal atmospheric windows bands which include band29, 31 and 32, for cloud and clear water region, the brightness temperature at band32 is highest and the temperature at band31 is close to band32. However, for dust aerosols, the brightness temperature at band32 is much greater than those at band29, band31, and the brightness temperature difference between band29 and band31 is small and the lower is the difference, the stronger is the dust aerosol. Those Asian dust aerosol characteristics are nice and useful for dust detection, dust retrieval over ocean, and deep study for marine environment and ecology.

Abstract:
Shoreline changes, that occur along the coast, gives negative effects to the environment and also social-economic activities on the fishermen’s livelihood. Study about shoreline changes, its trends, and its causes are important for the development of economic and sanitation vulnerability assessment on fishermen community caused by shoreline changes. Thus, environmental sustainability criteria within the local scale and specific to fishermen community takes into account and the implementation of the instrument become more appropriate to reduce the undesirable effects. This research aims to identifying and analysing shoreline changes trend and its factors over the fishermen settlement area along the coast of Sungaibuntu and Cemarajaya village, Karawang Regency, West Java. Data used in this study are Landsat-7 1999, 2002, 2007, and 2012 as well as Landsat-8 2017. To enhance Landsat-7 images, band 2-4-5 are used, meanwhile Landsat-8 employs band 3-5-6. Later, the shoreline was extracted by applying band rationing techniques, Band2/Band5 for Landsat-7 and Band3/Band6 for Landsat-8. The rate of shoreline changes along the coast of Sungaibuntu is -0.15 m/yr and -2.89 m/yr along Cemarajaya. The periodic phenomena that affect shoreline changes consist of tidal range with a mean value of 0.796 m, significant wave height (Hs) of 0 - 2.9 m with the dominant direction heading to the southeast, and also sea level rise (SLR). Besides, there is an anthropogenic factor of land use and land cover changes as the significant feature shown by the managed system of ponds, cropland, farmland, paddy field, along with the settlement. As for the instrument development of economic and sanitation vulnerability on fishermen community, it is important to take shoreline changes rate and its causes into account and consider it as vulnerability criteria.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to formulate a new methodology based upon informational tools to detect patients with cardiac arrhythmias. As it is known, sudden death is the consequence of a final arrhythmia, and here lies the relevance of the efforts aimed at the early detection of arrhythmias. The information content in the time series from an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is conveyed in the form of a probability distribution function, to compute the permutation entropy proposed by Bandt and Pompe. This selection was made seeking its remarkable conceptual simplicity, computational speed, and robustness to noise. In this work, two well-known databases were used, one containing normal sinus rhythms and another one containing arrhythmias, both from the MIT medical databank. For different values of embedding time delay [Formula: see text], normalized permutation entropy and statistical complexity measure are computed to finally represent them on the horizontal and vertical axes, respectively, which define the causal plane [Formula: see text]. To improve the results obtained in previous works, a feature set composed by these two magnitudes is built to train the following supervised machine learning algorithms: random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and [Formula: see text] nearest neighbors (kNN). To evaluate the performance of each classification technique, a 10-fold cross-validation scheme repeated 10 times was implemented. Finally, to select the best model, three quality parameters were computed, namely, accuracy, the area under the receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), and the F1-score. The results obtained show that the best classification model to detect the ECG coming from arrhythmic patients is RF. The values of the quality parameters were at the same levels reported in the available literature using a larger data set, thus supporting this proposal that uses a very small-sized feature space to train the model later used to classify. Summarizing, the attained results show the possibility to discriminate both groups of patients, with normal sinus rhythm or arrhythmic ECG, showing a promising efficiency in the definition of new markers for the detection of cardiovascular pathologies.

Abstract:
Context. Pulsar radio emission undergoes dispersion due to the presence of free electrons in the interstellar medium (ISM). The dispersive delay in the arrival time of the pulsar signal changes over time due to the varying ISM electron column density along the line of sight. Accurately correcting for this delay is crucial for the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves using pulsar timing arrays. Aims. We aim to demonstrate the precision in the measurement of the dispersion delay achieved by combining 400−500 MHz (BAND3) wide-band data with those at 1360−1460 MHz (BAND5) observed using the upgraded GMRT, employing two different template alignment methods. Methods. To estimate the high precision dispersion measure (DM), we measure high precision times-of-arrival (ToAs) of pulses using carefully generated templates and the currently available pulsar timing techniques. We use two different methods for aligning the templates across frequency to obtain ToAs over multiple sub-bands and therefrom measure the DMs. We study the effects of these two different methods on the measured DM values in detail. Results. We present in-band and inter-band DM estimates of four pulsars over the timescale of a year using two different template alignment methods. The DMs obtained using both these methods show only subtle differences for PSRs J1713+0747 and J1909−3744. A considerable offset is seen in the DM of PSRs J1939+2134 and J2145−0750 between the two methods. This could be due to the presence of scattering in the former and profile evolution in the latter. We find that both methods are useful but could have a systematic offset between the DMs obtained. Irrespective of the template alignment methods followed, the precision on the DMs obtained is about 10−3 pc cm−3 using only BAND3 and 10−4 pc cm−3 after combining data from BAND3 and BAND5 of the uGMRT. In a particular result, we detected a DM excess of about 5 × 10−3 pc cm−3 on 24 February 2019 for PSR J2145−0750. This excess appears to be due to the interaction region created by fast solar wind from a coronal hole and a coronal mass ejection observed from the Sun on that epoch. A detailed analysis of this interesting event is presented.

Abstract Even though scholarship on music and exile under Franco has grown steadily for the past three decades, little attention has been paid thus far to exiled performers who were active primarily as members of orchestras and bands. This article makes an initial contribution to this field by focusing on the Banda Madrid as a case study. The Banda Madrid was founded in the spring of 1939 in the internment camp of Le Barcarès (France) by Rafael Oropesa. Its members went into exile in Mexico City and became a fixture of the Spanish exile community until 1947. I discuss how the Banda Madrid and the stories of some of its individual members expand our understanding of politics and modernity in the Spanish Republican exile. In order to do this, I follow the trajectories of Banda Madrid musicians before, during, and after the Civil War, and contrast them with those of left-wing composers in exile.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Drug-induced lupus (DIL) has been described as an adverse event of an immunological nature, in relation to treatment with anti-TNFα drugs. It is considered as a manifestation uncommon in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The main objective of the study was to know the prevalence of DIL, the main characteristics and the management of IBD patients. The secondary objetive was to identify predictive factors related to the pathology. Methods We conducted a retrospective study, between January 2017- March 2020, in patients with IBD treated with anti-TNFα drugs during this time, in a single center. The information was obtained from the clinical history of the hospital. Patients with different degrees of data incompleteness were dismissed. Although there are no accepted diagnostic criteria, diagnosis was based on the criteria proposed by De Bandt: (i) the presence of immunologic abnormalities: ANA+ and/or anti-dsDNA+; (ii) at least two clinical features; (iii) clear temporal association with exposure to the anti-TNFα. The serum concentration of Infliximab (IFX) was considered optimal within the interval 3–7 μg/mL2. For Adalimumab (ADA) the optimal interval was 5–8 μg/mL3. Results We identified 248 patients with anti-TNFα therapy. 15 of them were dismissed due to incomplete data. We found 8 patients with a DIL diagnosis (3.34%). The manifestations of DIL occurred after a mean of treatment duration of 29.63 months. The clinical features of DIL included arthritis (87.5%), fatigue (75%), fever (25%), vasculitis, cutaneous manifestations, and nephropaty (12.5%) each. All patients required specific treatment and in 7 of them (87.5%) the anti-TNFα drug was discontinued followed by complete clinical resolution in all of them. Patients with DIL had a higher prevalence of suboptimal serum concentration of anti-TNFα drug than the rest of the patients (83.33% versus 29.89%, p = 0.012). In addition, the combination therapy with immunomodulators (IMM) was less frequent in the DIL group (0% versus 64.37%, p = 0.003). Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) had a higher prevalence in DIL cases (100% versus 25.36%, p>0.001). No differences were found regarding the type of disease (CD versus UC), duration of anti-TNFα treatment, previous treatment with another anti-TNFα or with the type of anti-TNFα (IFX versus ADA). Conclusion The prevalence of DIL in IBD patients undergoing anti-TNFα treatment could be even higher than described due to the lack of knowledge of the disease and the absence of clearly reported diagnostic criteria. The DIL does not seem to be related to the type of disease, or the type of anti-TNFα. Suboptimal serum concentrations of anti-TNFα, as well as monotherapy treatment (without IMM) could be related to the development of DIL.

Abstract:
Based on characteristics analysis about remote sensing reflectance, the Secchi Disk Depth (SDD) in the Qiandao Lake was predicted from the Landsat8/OLI data, and its changing rates on a pixel-by-pixel scale were obtained from satellite remote sensing for the first time. Using 114 matchups data pairs during 2013–2019, the SDD satellite algorithms suitable for the Qiandao Lake were obtained through both the linear regression and machine learning (Support Vector Machine) methods, with remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) at different OLI bands and the ratio of Rrs (Band3) to Rrs (Band2) as model input parameters. Compared with field observations, the mean absolute relative difference and root mean squared error of satellite-derived SDD were within 20% and 1.3 m, respectively. Satellite-derived results revealed that SDD in the Qiandao Lake was high in boreal spring and winter, and reached the lowest in boreal summer, with the annual mean value of about 5 m. Spatially, high SDD was mainly concentrated in the southeast lake area (up to 13 m) close to the dam. The edge and runoff area of the lake were less transparent, with an SDD of less than 4 m. In the past decade (2013–2020), 5.32% of Qiandao Lake witnessed significant (p < 0.05) transparency change: 4.42% raised with a rate of about 0.11 m/year and 0.9% varied with a rate of about −0.09 m/year. Besides, the findings presented here suggested that heavy rainfall would have a continuous impact on the Qiandao Lake SDD. Our research could promote the applications of land observation satellites (such as the Landsat series) in water environment monitoring in inland reservoirs.
