Abstract:

Abstract:
This study investigated the development of marching band traditions at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as told through the rivalry between Southern University (SU) and Jackson State University (JSU). I interviewed directors from SU, including Lawrence Jackson, Nathan Haymer, and Kedric Taylor. Directors from JSU included Dowell Taylor, Lewis Liddell, and Lowell Hollinger. Paul Adams directed at both schools, David Ware is an HBCU bands researcher, and Julian White directed at Florida A&M University (FAMU). I found traditions established through the intense rivalry between SU and JSU. Interviewees agree that a desire to outplay and outperform the other band is a major factor. This study highlights similarities between HBCU bands and New Orleans-style “second line” brass bands, which were historically driven by a competitive edge. Narrations revealed combinations of happenstance and careful planning that birthed traditions such as the famed pre-game “zero quarter” and post-game “fifth quarter” rituals that are now commonplace at HBCU football games. Directors discussed how these traditions changed with improved video sharing. Fans now demand more music, more shock factor, and flawlessness. This competitive environment forged unique traditions which can inform modern music educators about the important and complex role of competition in performance.

Abstract:
This article proposes a classification method of two-class motor imagery electroencephalogram (EEG) signals based on convolutional neural network (CNN), in which EEG signals from C3, C4 and Cz electrodes of publicly available BCI competition IV dataset 2b were used to test the performance of the CNN. The authors investigate two similar CNNs: a single-input CNN with a form of 2-dimensional input from short time Fourier transform (STFT) combining time, frequency and location information, and a multiple-input CNN with 3-dimensional input which processes the electrodes as an independent dimension. Fisher discriminant analysis-type F-score based on band pass (BP) feature and power spectra density (PSD) feature are employed respectively to select the subject-optimal frequency bands. In the experiments, typical frequency bands related to motor imagery EEG signals, subject-optimal frequency bands and extension frequency bands are employed respectively as the frequency range of the input image of CNN. The better classification performance of extension frequency bands show that CNN can extract optimal feature from frequency information automatically. The classification result also demonstrates that the proposed approach is more competitive in prediction of left/right hand motor imagery task compared with other state-of-art approaches.

Abstract:
This study investigated the influence of competitive state on cerebral cortex activity of professional shooters with 10 m air rifle before shooting. Generally, professional athletes have higher neural efficiency compared with ordinary people. We recruited 11 national shooters to complete 60 shots under both noncompetitive and competitive shooting conditions, and simultaneously collected their electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) information. Theta, alpha, and beta power were computed in the last three seconds preceding each shot from average-reference 29-channel EEG, while EEG characteristics under two conditions were analyzed. The results showed a significant linear correlation between shooting accuracy and EEG power of anterior frontal, central, temporal, and occipital regions in beta and theta bands. In addition, the theta power in occipital regions, alpha power in frontal-central and left occipital regions, and beta power in frontal and mid-occipital regions were higher than those in noncompetitive state. However, heart rate (HR) and shooting accuracy did not change significantly under the two conditions. These findings reveal the changes of cortical activity underlying competition shooting as well as providing further understanding of the neural mechanisms of the shooting process and lay a foundation for the subsequent neuromodulation research.

Abstract:
Abstract Cooperation and competition are two basic modes of human interaction. Their underlying neural mechanisms, especially from an interpersonal perspective, have not been fully explored. Using the electroencephalograph-based hyperscanning technique, the present study investigated the neural correlates of both cooperation and competition within the same ecological paradigm using a classic motion-sensing tennis game. Both the inter-brain coupling (the inter-brain amplitude correlation and inter-brain phase-locking) and the intra-brain spectral power were analyzed. Only the inter-brain amplitude correlation showed a significant difference between cooperation and competition, with different spatial patterns at theta, alpha and beta frequency bands. Further inspection revealed distinct inter-brain coupling patterns for cooperation and competition; cooperation elicited positive inter-brain amplitude correlation at the delta and theta bands in extensive brain regions, while competition was associated with negative occipital inter-brain amplitude correlation at the alpha and beta bands. These findings add to our knowledge of the neural mechanisms of cooperation and competition and suggest the significance of adopting an inter-brain perspective in exploring the neural underpinnings of social interaction in ecological contexts.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe oxide interface SrTiO3/LaAlO3 supports a 2D electron liquid displaying superconductivity and magnetism, while allowing for a continuous control of the electron density using a gate. Our recent measurements have shown a similar surprising nonmonotonic behavior as function of the gate voltage (carrier density) of three quantities: the superconducting critical temperature and field, the inverse Hall coefficient, and the frequency of quantum oscillations. While the total density has to be monotonic as function of gate, the last result indicates that one of the involved bands has a nonmontonic occupancy as function of the chemical potential. We show how electronic interactions can lead to such an effect, by creating a competition between the involved bands and making their sturcture non-rigid, and thus account for all these effects. Adding Fock terms to our previous Hartree treatment makes this scenario even more generic.

Abstract:
Recently we have observed two-dimensional periodic and quasiperiodic structures in the transverse profile of an optical beam circulating in a feedback loop which contains a nonlinear medium. The symmetries observed depend not only on the interaction between light and nonlinear medium, but also on a nonlocality due to beam rotation in the feedback loop. The linear stability analysis of our model shows the existence of many unstable bands of transverse wavevectors. Close to threshold, predictions are qualitatively and quantitatively confirmed by the experiment. When the intensity threshold values are almost the same for the two principal bands, structures with different wavenumbers arise above threshold. These modes compete with a very complex dynamics. We have started to study this behavior by means of suitable indicators. As a first indicator we have individuated the fraction of light power distributed on the first band respect to that one distributed on both.

Abstract:
Recent work suggests that coloured plastic leg bands may alter the sexual attractiveness and reproductive success of zebra finches (Poephila guttata). For example, males wearing red bands are more attractive to females and have enhanced reproductive success compared with males that have light green bands. Colour bands have been widely used in studies of avian behaviour and therefore could introduce bias if they regularly have a significant impact on social interactions among individuals. We carried out an experiment to assess the proximate effects of colour bands on zebra finch behaviour. Male zebra finches maintained in a large indoor aviary were given either red or light green bands and then scored for their ability to compete for a limited number of nest boxes and to attract females. The same males were randomly reassigned either red or light green bands and tested for their ability to regain boxes and attract new females. We found no correlation between band colour and a male's ability to gain either a nest or female. However, there was an association between male activity level and success. Also, those males that attracted a female in the first part of the experiment were more likely to do so in the second part of the experiment. We conclude that any immediate advantages conferred by attractive band colours may be masked under conditions of strong intermale competition for nests and mates.

Abstract:
AbstractTheory predicts that habitat generalist species are excluded by specialist species in optimal habitat for specialists, and empirical data commonly show a shift from specialist- to generalist-dominated communities following disturbance. We investigated co-occurrence patterns of habitat generalist and specialist terrestrial rodents at two spatial scales in the Atlantic Forest, aiming at evaluating the following hypotheses: 1) within-patch spatial niche partitioning promotes coexistence of generalists and specialists, leading to checkerboard presence-absence patterns at small (within-patch) rather than large (among-patch) scales; and 2) the decrease in abundance of specialists due to habitat loss promotes a competitive release of generalists, leading to negative covariance in abundance between generalists and specialists among patches. Drawing on a large data set including 363 sites within three patches in continuous forest, and 45 patches within three landscapes, we used C-scores based on presence-absence and abundance data to evaluate spatial segregation. We found consistent segregation between specialists and generalists at the within-patch rather than among-patch scale, but no consistent negative covariance in abundance between generalists and specialists among patches (as covarying species pairs varied across landscapes). Our findings suggest that spatial patterns caused by competition are scale-dependent, and coexistence of generalists and specialists is promoted by within-patch spatial niche partitioning. However, the influence of competitive release on the proliferation of generalists may be outweighed by other factors in fragmented landscapes.

Abstract:
AbstractThe long-term success of weed management programs requires that all crops in a rotation receive satisfactory weed control. Band sowing with inter-band hoeing has been proposed as an innovative weed management strategy for grain crops. In the band-sowing system, crops are sown in a broadcast pattern within a band of some chosen width (here we selected 12.7 cm); weeds between bands are controlled with inter-band hoeing, with or without so-called “blind cultivation,” for example, tine harrowing. Alteration of the crop spatial arrangement from typical single-line rows to a more evenly distributed pattern aims to enhance interspecific competition while reducing intraspecific competition. Field experiments, conducted in Maine in 2016 and 2017, compared band sowing with inter-band hoeing to the region’s standard practice of planting in 16.5-cm rows and tine harrowing in four test crops: spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Glenn’), oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Colt’), field pea (Pisum sativum L. ‘Jetset’), and flax (Linum usitatissimum L. ‘Prairie Thunder’). Band sowing improved weed control relative to the standard practice, especially in crops with greater competitive ability (wheat and oat). Despite improved weed control, in most cases, yields were unaffected by treatment. While band sowing with hoeing provided improved weed control in multiple crops, further study is warranted to optimize seeding rate, band width, and inter-band width to improve crop yields.

Strategies for increasing the competitiveness of entities are created by building multilevel inter-organizational relations. These ties take on the character of clusters or clusters. Entities seek new competitive opportunities in a global cooperation network and take advantage of location advantages. Integrating into clusters creates new competitive opportunities, innovative opportunities and eliminates location defects. Scenarios for the development of clusters together with the determinants of the competitive success of entities will be described in the organic concept of cluster creation. In favorable conditions, clusters can transform into strands or multigrons. The bands eliminate or limit location defects of entities and open competitive opportunities on the global market. The organic concept of creating grapes was observed on the competitive success of the Świętokrzysko-Podkarpackie Construction Cluster INNOWATOR and Grona Targowe Kielce. Competitive chances of entities operating in clusters have been subject to questionnaire surveys, the results of which will be presented in subsequent articles.

Abstract:
This paper aims to identify the reasons can help us to explain how a modest local bank, founded by a group of merchants that carried out their activity in the port of Santander in the central years of the 19th century, was able to sustain over time until joining the select club of the “big seven” of Spanish banking. It is concluded that three distinctive features should take into account in order to explain its longevity and prolonged accommodation to the local sphere throughout this long period: the strong family ties and instrumental friendship between its managers, the design of a financial policy with marked risk aversion and a protectionist attitude, against all competition. These distinctive features began to emerge in its very origins as an issuing bank.

Abstract:
This article examines the labour market for ‘function’ musicians in London. It shows how the market encompasses a chain of relationships between clients, intermediaries and musicians, considering how the idea of ‘moral economy’ – a subject of revived interest in employment sociology – fits empirical reality. It shows that function musicians have created a strong moral economy regulating the distribution of opportunities and resources within bands. However, other actors in the chain, particularly agents, are able to impose intensified labour competition on bands. This competition leads trust relationships to fray and social expectations about the distribution of resources to weaken. These tensions are embodied in the role of the fixer: a musician who uneasily straddles market and moral domains.

Abstract:
In this study, five selected Lactobacillus of fecal origin were investigated for their probiotic properties. They were preliminarily identified by partial 16S rDNA gene sequencing and characterized in vitro for their resistance to low pH and bile salts. Here, we assessed the adhesive properties and the ability to inhibit the adhesion and to displace pathogens of five selected Lactobacillus strains using HT-29 cells model through a process which may be related to specific components of the baterial surface. Surface-layer proteins are located in a paracrystalline layer outside the bacterial cell wall and are thought to play a role in tissue adherence. Removal of S-layer proteins from the Lactobacillus (treated with 5 M LiCl) reduced adhesion to Caco-2 cells. Under such conditions, inhibition activity was also decreased in all five strains, as revealed in competition assays, which suggested that S-layer protein had involved in the adhesion of probiotics. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the presence of S-layer proteins with dominant bands of was approximately 60 kDa. Our findings also indicate that the surface layer proteins contributed to its increased adhesion to the cultured cells and competitive exclusion of pathogens.

Abstract:
This work aims at addressing two issues simultaneously: data compression at input space and semantic segmentation. Semantic segmentation of remotely sensed multi- or hyperspectral images through deep learning (DL) artificial neural networks (ANN) delivers as output the corresponding matrix of pixels classified elementwise, achieving competitive performance metrics. With technological progress, current remote sensing (RS) sensors have more spectral bands and higher spatial resolution than before, which means a greater number of pixels in the same area. Nevertheless, the more spectral bands and the greater number of pixels, the higher the computational complexity and the longer the processing times. Therefore, without dimensionality reduction, the classification task is challenging, particularly if large areas have to be processed. To solve this problem, our approach maps an RS-image or third-order tensor into a core tensor, representative of our input image, with the same spatial domain but with a lower number of new tensor bands using a Tucker decomposition (TKD). Then, a new input space with reduced dimensionality is built. To find the core tensor, the higher-order orthogonal iteration (HOOI) algorithm is used. A fully convolutional network (FCN) is employed afterwards to classify at the pixel domain, each core tensor. The whole framework, called here HOOI-FCN, achieves high performance metrics competitive with some RS-multispectral images (MSI) semantic segmentation state-of-the-art methods, while significantly reducing computational complexity, and thereby, processing time. We used a Sentinel-2 image data set from Central Europe as a case study, for which our framework outperformed other methods (included the FCN itself) with average pixel accuracy (PA) of 90% (computational time ∼90s) and nine spectral bands, achieving a higher average PA of 91.97% (computational time ∼36.5s), and average PA of 91.56% (computational time ∼9.5s) for seven and five new tensor bands, respectively.

Abstract:
Abstract Four distinct antigens were identified in soluble sonicates of Mycobacterium leprae by using a panel of 11 monoclonal antibodies. Cross-reactivity studies with other mycobacterial species were conducted by using ELISA and immunoblot assays, and demonstrated that determinants on two of the antigens were present in many mycobacteria, whereas the other two were limited in distribution. Competitive inhibition experiments with radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies showed cross-inhibition between antibodies identifying two of the four antigenic bands. These two bands, of Mr 4.5 to 6 KD and 30 to 40 KD, were resistant to protease treatment after immunoblotting. In contrast, the two other bands of 16 and 70 KD were protease-sensitive. Although all four bands reacted with some human lepromatous leprosy sera in immunoblots, the 4.5 to 6 KD and 30 to 40 KD bands were most prominent. Lepromatous leprosy sera also inhibited the binding of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies to each of the four antigens, with the mean titer causing 50% inhibition being higher for antibodies reacting with the 4.5 to 6 KD and 30 to 40 KD bands. These findings indicated that all four antigens were involved in the human B cell response to M. leprae.

Abstract:
A hyperspectral image (HSI) has many bands, which leads to high correlation between adjacent bands, so it is necessary to find representative subsets before further analysis. To address this issue, band selection is considered as an effective approach that removes redundant bands for HSI. Recently, many band selection methods have been proposed, but the majority of them have extremely poor accuracy in a small number of bands and require multiple iterations, which does not meet the purpose of band selection. Therefore, we propose an efficient clustering method based on shared nearest neighbor (SNNC) for hyperspectral optimal band selection, claiming the following contributions: (1) the local density of each band is obtained by shared nearest neighbor, which can more accurately reflect the local distribution characteristics; (2) in order to acquire a band subset containing a large amount of information, the information entropy is taken as one of the weight factors; (3) a method for automatically selecting the optimal band subset is designed by the slope change. The experimental results reveal that compared with other methods, the proposed method has competitive computational time and the selected bands achieve higher overall classification accuracy on different data sets, especially when the number of bands is small.

Abstract:
Establishing how mammalian chromosome replication is regulated and how groups of replication origins are organized into replication bands will significantly increase our understanding of chromosome organization. Replication time bands in mammalian chromosomes show overall congruency with structural R- and G-banding patterns as revealed by different chromosome banding techniques. Thus, chromosome bands reflect variations in the longitudinal structure and function of the chromosome, but little is known about the structural basis of the metaphase chromosome banding pattern. At the microscopic level, both structural R and G bands and replication bands occupy discrete domains along chromosomes, suggesting separation by distinct boundaries. The purpose of this study was to determine replication timing differences encompassing a boundary between differentially replicating chromosomal bands. Using competitive PCR on replicated DNA from flow-sorted cell cycle fractions, we have analyzed the replication timing of markers spanning roughly 5 Mb of human chromosome 13q14.3/q21.1. This is only the second report of high-resolution analysis of replication timing differences across an R/G-band boundary. In contrast to previous work, however, we find that band boundaries are defined by a gradient in replication timing rather than by a sharp boundary separating R and G bands into functionally distinct chromatin compartments. These findings indicate that topographical band boundaries are not defined by specific sequences or structures.

Abstract:
Currently, most basketball research is focused on professional and elite players. Studies at the amateur level are important to explain the physical and technical demands of competition and thus improve players’ and teams’ performance. The purpose of the present study was to describe the competitive demands of an amateur-level basketball team and to analyze the influence of different situational variables on the physical and technical performance indicators. Eleven amateur senior basketball players participated in six official final-round games during the 2018/2019 season. External, internal load, and notational analysis were registered by inertial devices, heart rate bands, and video analysis. The Kruskal-Wallis H-test was applied for comparisons based on playing positions, periods, and final quarter game outcome, with the post hoc comparison accomplished by a Mann-Whitney U test. The Spearman correlation coefficient was realized for the relational analysis. The results showed that: (a) guards covered more volume of displacements (effective on-court time: p < 0.01, E R 2 = 0.05; steps/min: p < 0.01, E R 2 = 0.28) and the centers performed competitive actions of higher load ([>8G] Imp/min: p < 0.01, E R 2 = 0.20; jumps/min: p < 0.01, E R 2 = 0.33); (b) a performance decreasing was found between the first and second half of the game; (c) in balanced matches there was the most individual technical performance (PIR/min: p < 0.98, E R 2 = 0.01), while in the unbalanced games more high-intensity impacts were seen ([>8G] Imp/min: p < 0.01, E R 2 = 0.07). The situational variables analyzed had an influence on athletic performance in amateur senior basketball players and should be considered for designing training sessions and planning strategies during official matches.

This study aims to analyze the marketing strategy of BNI Credit Cards in the face of global competition at PT. Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk Banda Aceh Branch Office. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type where the type of data used is secondary data sourced from various reports and documentation from PT. Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk Banda Aceh Branch Office. The results of this study indicate that in marketing BNI Banda Aceh Branch credit cards a strategy that can be used is a marketing strategy that differentiates the market (Differentiated marketing), which is to determine the target market segmentation in accordance with the target types of credit card products that are in accordance with the segmentation. The Banda Aceh BNI branch also uses a concentrated marketing strategy such as the marketing of BNI-Unsyiah affinity Credit Cards which is focused on alumni of Syiah Kuala University throughout Indonesia. Besides that, another strategy used by the Banda Aceh BNI branch in marketing BNI Credit Cards is by issuing pre aproval credit cards, where certain customers in accordance with applicable regulations are directly proposed to issue credit cards on behalf of these customers, if the customer agrees for card issuance, the card can be activated immediately. Furthermore, BNI provides the convenience of non-cash transactions through the YAP (Your All Payment) application as a payment tool for (cashless) and without showing the debit card or credit card (Cardless) through a smartphone. This YAP application is an advantage owned by BNI and the first in Indonesia.

Abstract:

Abstract We report an original application of competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the quantification of MDR1 mRNA in clinical specimens by simultaneous reverse transcription and PCR amplification of cellular RNA with decreasing amounts of an internal standard. The competitor RNA shares the same MDR1 primer sequences as the cellular mRNA, but yields a different-sized PCR product. This allows resolution of the amplified cDNA fragments after agarose gel electrophoresis and ethidium bromide staining. The concentration of MDR1 mRNA is derived from the ratio between the intensities of the bands corresponding to the amplified products. We have used this assay to measure MDR1 expression in breast carcinomas and assessed the precision, sensitivity, and accuracy of the method. Competitive RT-PCR is a simple, highly specific, nonradioactive procedure for the quantification of MDR1 mRNA and is particularly suitable for use in the clinical laboratory.

Abstract:
This article assesses the pirate bands in the coastal waters of late imperial China as political communities in flight from the state. James C. Scott's (2009) recent work on fugitive political communities in the highlands of Southeast Asia presents a novel and compelling account of small, remote groups living as escapees from the state. I expand on Scott's thesis by considering pirate bands as escape groups that not only escape state coercion but go on to accumulate sufficient power to reengage with and sometimes coerce the states they escaped. The pirate bands of the period formed relationships with the Chinese state that were by turns competitive, cooperative, coercive, and extractive. They were persistently loyal to no one but themselves. Two cases illustrate the argument: that of the pirate band of Zheng Zhilong and his son Zheng Chenggong and that of the pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao.

Abstract:
In the wake of neoliberal reforms that devastated the country, Mexico and the World Bank converged on providing at least two social programs in the guise of “humanitarian” capitalism. Progresa, also known as Oportunidades and more recently Prospera, involves a workfare-based cash transfer program aimed at enhancing the human capital of future generations. The program has been criticized for its exploitation of the work of mothers. Seguro Popular involves extending basic health care to those employed in the informal economy. Both, with all their weaknesses and exploitative aspects, serve the function of providing skills and enhanced health status to the subproletariat in the hope that a competitive formal economy will expand and employ them; they are also intended to mute social protest.

Abstract:
Abstract The exact mechanisms of antigen processing within an antigen presenting cell (APC) are not well defined. The canonical pathway describes degradation of the antigenic proteins, competition between peptides for binding to MHC II, followed by presentation to T cells. Alternately, an entire protein might bind to MHC II first and be trimmed through the action of enzymes. Here we determined the binding affinity of HA to DR1, a human MHC II allele, in the presence and absence of the peptide-editing molecule DM and whether multiple DR1 can bind to a single HA. Binding affinities were determined by competitive binding assays with or without DM. Both native and denatured HA bind to DR1 with comparable affinities in the hundreds of nanomolar range. DM appears to decrease binding strength of HA irrespective of its state. Multiple binding events on individual HA were shown over time on blue native-PAGE gels. Bands of increasing molecular weight appear over a 24-hour time course in the blue native gels while amounts of HA and DR1 decrease over time. Taken together, these results support the hypothesis of an alternate pathway of antigen processing whereby the protein binds first to potentially multiple MHC II molecules and is then trimmed by enzymatic activity. Such MHC-mediated shielding mechanism may increase presentation of peptides by APCs that would be otherwise lost to cleavage.

This paper considers the question: - “In face of changes in the demand for money resulting from an increase in the risk perception by the economic agents, what are the proper actions the Central Bank should take?” as a starting point for a normative conclusion about the convenience of a monetary regime with a State monopoly of the money supply, forced legal tender and central bank versus the alternative of competitive money supply.

Abstract:
A K+-dependent asparaginase (E.C. 3.5.1.1.) was purified 1328-fold from the testas of immature pea seeds (Pisum sativum L., var. Bolero) and characterized. Antibodies raised against purified asparaginase cross-reacted with the putative asparaginase band in Western blot analyses of semi-purified extracts. However, for crude extracts of pea testas, a cross-reaction was obtained with at least four protein bands, one of which was asparaginase protein. Affinity-purified antibodies to the four strongest bands of crude extracts were fairly specific for the bands from which they were purified, suggesting a mixture of specific antibodies. The Mr of asparaginase was 69,000 by Sephacryl S200 chromatography and also by mobility on native PAGE relative to BSA. There was no evidence for dissociation into subunits on SDS-PAGE, suggesting a monomeric protein of Mr 69,000. Other properties include an apparent Km of 2.4 mM, pI between 4.5 and 5, and competitive inhibition by aspartate and glycine.
