Abstract:

Abstract:
A high amount of intravarietal variation in satellites and C-banded chromosomes was observed in the hexaploid wheatgrass synthetic cultivar 'Greenleaf' (Agropyron intermedium ssp. trichophorum (Link) A. &Gr., 2n = 6x = 42, genome E1E1E2E2SS). The cultivar is an open-pollinated perennial that shows extensive interplant polymorphism for many biological characters. Maximum number of satellites detected varied among plants from zero to six. In 61% of the plants, we observed two large satellites in association with zero, one, or two small ones. Chromosome constitution differed significantly among plants as revealed by analysis of variance based on the total number of banded chromosomes and the number of banded chromosomes with telomeric bands at either one or both ends. Heteromorphism in C-banding patterns between homologues was found in most of the chromosomes and was classified into four types: (i) difference in band size, (ii) difference in presence/absence of one or two bands, (iii) completely different banding patterns, and (iv) banded versus unbanded. Homologous chromosomes having types iii and iv heteromorphism could only be matched by their relative length and arm ratio instead of C-banding patterns. Deletions were detected in two chromosomes. Overall, C-banded chromosomes of this cultivar were characterized by the presence of large telomeric bands and were quite different from the previously reported karyotypes of the supposed diploid ancestor Agropyron elongatum (Host) P. Beauv. (genome EE) and an Ag. intermedium (Host) P. Beauv. accession (E1E1E2E2SS) The results suggest that dramatic chromosome modifications have occurred in this species during the course of evolution. The study sheds light on the extent of intrapopulation polymorphism present in the karyotypes of outcrossing polyploids and synthetic cultivars and has implications regarding strategies for chromosomal manipulation involving open-pollinated species.Key words: Agropyron intermedium ssp. trichophorum, intravarietal variation, satellites, C-banded karyotype.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractPyrochlore-group minerals are common in the Neoproterozoic Sevattur carbonatite complex. This complex is composed of dolomite-, calcite-, banded- and blue carbonatite together with pyroxenite, albitite and diverse syenites. This work reports the paragenetic-textural types and compositional variation of pyrochlore hosted by dolomite carbonatite, banded carbonatite and albitite together with that of alteration assemblages containing belkovite and baotite. On the basis of composition, five different types of pyrochlore are recognised and termed Pcl-I through to Pcl-V. The Pb-rich Pcl-I are present exclusively as inclusions in U-rich Pcl-IIa in dolomite carbonatite. The alteration assemblages of Pb-poor Pcl-IIb + Ba-rich or Ba–Si- rich Pcl-IV + belkovite (dolomite carbonatite) and Si-rich Pcl-V + baotite (banded carbonatite) formed after Pcl-IIa differ in these carbonatites. The albitite hosts extremely U-Ti-rich Pcl-III, mantled by Ba-rich potassium feldspar. In common with the banded carbonatite, Pcl-V is formed by alteration of Pcl-III where this mantle is partially, or completely broken. The Ba-Si-enrichment of Pcl-IV and Pcl-V together with the ubiquitous presence of baryte in all Sevattur lithologies suggests late-stage interaction with a Ba-Si-rich acidic hydrothermal fluid. This fluid was responsible for leaching silica from the associated silicates and produced Pcl-V in the silicate-rich lithologies of the banded carbonatite and albitite. The absence of Pcl-V in dolomite carbonatite is a consequence of the low modal abundance of silicates. The complex compositional diversity and lithology specific pyrochlore alteration assemblages suggest that all pyrochlore (Pcl-I to Pcl-IV) were formed initially in an unknown source and transported subsequently in their respective hosts as altered antecrysts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The weathering profile can be differentiated into an upper, 4.8 m thick, pedological soil (zone I) and a lower, >16.2 m thick, saprock (zone II). Zone I comprises thin IA and IB soil horizons of firm, clayey sand with lateritic concretions, and a IC soil horizon of stiff, clayey silt with quartz clasts and lateritized core-stones. Zone II comprises steeply dipping to vertical, bands of pinkish to grey, stiff silt with distinct relict foliation (highly weathered schist) inter-fingering with bands of reddish yellow, firm clayey silt with indistinct foliation (completely weathered schist) towards its top, and bands of white to light grey, hard silt with distinct foliation (moderately weathered schist) towards its bottom. Lateral variations in abundance of differently weathered schist and preservation of fracture planes allow zone II to be separated into IIA, IIB and IIC sub-zones. The pedological soil (zone I) can be correlated with Class VI of standard rock mass weathering classifications, whilst the saprock sub-zones IIA, IIB and IIC are correlated with Classes V, IV and III, respectively. Silt fractions in the profile consist predominantly of sericite flakes, whilst the sand fractions are mostly of quartz grains and the clay fractions of mainly illite and kaolinite. Decreasing densities, unit weights and silt contents up the profile, but increasing porosities and clay contents, indicate increasing in situ alteration of the schist bedrock. Lowering of an unconfined groundwater table as a result of down-cutting by rivers in adjacent valleys is considered responsible for development of the weathering profile.

Abstract:
The objectives of the present study were to determine if carbonic anhydrase III (CA III) demonstrated a specific association for any particular organelle or structure of the skeletal muscle cell and to quantify the activity and content of this enzyme in different types of skeletal muscle fibers. Ultrastructural localization of CA III in the soleus (SOL), deep vastus lateralis (DVL), and superficial vastus lateralis (SVL), composed of predominantly type I, IIa, and IIb fibers, respectively, was performed using a high-resolution immunocytochemical technique and antibody specific for CA III on ultra-thin sections of skeletal muscle embedded in the water-soluble medium polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The results indicated a uniform distribution of CA III within the sarcomere. Mitochondria, nuclei, triads, Z-, and M-bands were not specifically labeled. Immunoblotting of washed myofibril preparations did not show any detectable CA III associated with this structure. In addition to quantification of the immunogold labeling, CA III activity and content were assayed in the post-mitochondrial supernatant of the three muscles. In the SOL, these values were found to be 3.6-7.6 times higher than in the DVL. The SVL showed a labeling intensity slightly higher than background level, while the enzyme activity and content were indistinguishable from background levels. We therefore conclude that CA III is randomly distributed in the cytoplasm of the three muscle fiber types and that the relative CA III content and activity in the three muscles studied is SOL greater than DVL greater than SVL approximately equal to 0.

Abstract:
SUMMARYIn a field trial at Rukuhia, New Zealand, ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) seed was direct drilled into pasture (i) without herbicide suppression of the resident sward, (ii) with banded application of glyphosate or paraquat herbicide at drilling to remove 50% of the resident sward and (iii) after complete removal of the grass and weed components of the old sward with glyphosate or paraquat before drilling. These treatments were compared with the untreated old swards. Where the old sward was removed by herbicide before drilling, pests moved onto the drilled seedling rows, but, where herbicide was sprayed in bands over the drill rows, the pests remained in or moved into the residual bands of the old sward. Significant beneficial interactions between herbicide use and in-furrow applications of molluscicides and insecticides resulted in reductions in the numbers of pests on the seedling rows. The influence of vegetation control on the pest burden is discussed in the context of current pasture renovation practices.

Abstract:
The Zn-Pb ores of the Castellanos shale-hosted, clastic-dominated deposit in northwest Cuba average nearly 1 g/t Au, with local maximum concentrations up to 34 g/t Au. This deposit is stratiform with respect to the bedding in the host black shales and shows a bottom to top zoning of ore assemblages made up of a stockwork underlying the main orebody, a basal pyrite-rich zone and a disseminated to massive Zn-Pb ore zone capped by a discontinuous, thin barite-rich zone. Petrographic data and textural relations allow distinguishing five textural types of pyrite (framboidal Py I, colloform Py IIa, euhedral Py IIb, massive Py IIc and banded colloform Py III) successively formed during ore deposition. The main Zn-Pb ore formed after the crystallization of disseminated, sedimentary framboidal pyrite (Py I) in black shales by the superimposition of several crystallization events. The crystallization sequence of the main ore-forming stage evolved from the precipitation of colloform sphalerite and pyrite (Py IIa) with skeletal galena and interstitial dolomite-ankerite to similar ore assemblages but showing subhedral to euhedral crystal habits (Py IIb) and interstitial calcite-rich carbonates. This stage ended with the development of massive pyrite (Py IIc), mainly occurring at the base of the stratiform orebody. A late fracturing stage gave way to the development of a new generation of colloform banded pyrite (Py III) just preceding the crystallization of early barite. Au is mainly concentrated in pyrite showing variable contents in the different textural types of pyrite and a bottom to top enrichment trend. Minimum contents occur in massive pyrite (Py IIc) from the basal pyrite-rich zone (0.18 ppm Au average), increasing in pyrite IIa (from 0.29 to 2.86 ppm Au average) and in euhedral pyrite (Py IIb) (from 0.82 to 9.02 ppm Au average), reaching maxima in colloform banded pyrite (Py III) formed just before the crystallization of early barite at the top of the orebody. Au enrichment in pyrite correlates with that of Sb (0.08–4420 ppm), As (0.7–35,000 ppm), Ag (0.03–1560 ppm) and to a lesser extent Cu (3–25,000 ppm), Ni (0.02–1600 ppm) and Mn (0.6–5030 ppm). Au deposition should have taken place by oxidation and, probably cooling, of reduced (H2S-dominated) fluids buffered by organic matter-rich black shales of the host sedimentary sequence. The input of such reduced fluids in the ore-forming environment most probably occurred alternating with that of the main oxidized fluids which leached Zn and Pb from the large volume of sandstones and siltstones making up the enclosing sequence, thus being responsible for the precipitation of the majority Zn-Pb ore. Supply of Au-carrying reduced fluids might progressively increase over the course of ore formation, reaching a maximum at the beginning of the late fracturing stage. This evolution of Au supply is consistent with the early crystallization of barite since Ba can also only be transported at low temperature by highly reduced fluids. These results highlight the potential of medium-sized, shale-hosted, clastic-dominated deposits to contain economic (by product) Au amounts and show that ore-forming fluids can change from oxidized (SO42+ dominated) to reduced (H2S-dominated), and vice versa, throughout the evolutionary history of a single deposit.

Abstract:
Abstract Interjection and onomatopoeia have long been excluded from linguistic research. However, their study has previously made it possible to establish pragmatic bases whose approaches reveal their expressive richness. To analyze their translation and use in a comic strip, we have chosen here a linguistic-musical perspective. If the interjection serves as a marker of orality in a written text, as evidenced by French-language comic strips, onomatopoeia, for its part, presents, thanks to its mimetic relationship with extralinguistic reality, musical characteristics that help to complete and nuance the analysis of a text in a comic strip.

Abstract:
Ten bands of the [Formula: see text] system of oxygen have been observed in absorption using longer path lengths than in the earlier work of Herzberg (1953). Rotational analysis of the bands confirms that the A′ 3Δu state is an inverted state as expected from electron-configuration arguments. Rotational assignments are given for the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] sub-bands with ν′ = 2–11; weaker [Formula: see text] sub-bands are identified for ν′ = 5–11. Sub-band origins and rotational constants are given for all the bands. The following derived molecular constants are obtained:[Formula: see text]A comparison of the frequencies of the diffuse bands of oxygen with the sub-band origins of the [Formula: see text] bands shows convincingly that the diffuse bands can be assigned to a weak (O2)2 complex in which one of the O2 molecules is excited to the A′ 3Δu state.

Abstract:
