Takim, Liyakat. The Twelver Shi‘is in America. Edited by Jane I. Smith and Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199862634.013.022.

Abstract:
After the Prophet Muhammad died in 632 CE, the early Shiʿis claimed that ‘Ali, the Prophet’s cousin and son-in law, was his only legitimate successor. They also insisted that only the Prophet’s family members, the ahl al-bayt, were qualified to lead the Muslim community after him. When ‘Ali became the fourth Caliph of the Muslim community in 656 CE, Shiʿism emerged as a recognized religious movement in Islam. What sets Shiʿism apart from the majority Sunnis is the notion of the divinely inspired and charismatic leadership of the imams. This article focuses on Shiʿism in America by describing the four major Shiʿi groups: the Twelver Shiʿis, the Nizari Ismaʿilis, the Bohra Ismaʿilis, and the Zaydis. It examines the ethnic factor in American Shiʿism, nationalism and American Shiʿism, women and American Shiʿism, religious leadership in the Shiʿi community, and outreach programs by Shiʿi centers. It also looks at the Universal Muslim Association of America, the conversion of African Americans to Shiʿism, the impact of 9/11 on the American Shiʿi community, and political awareness among American Muslims.

Balleck, Barry J., ed. Hate Groups and Extremist Organizations in America. ABC-CLIO, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400661983.

Full text
Abstract:
This expansive collection of A-Z entries offers a compelling look into hate groups in America. Focusing on organizations in operation today, this resource book for student and general audiences covers numerous hot-button issues in politics and culture. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists nearly 900 hate groups active in the United States today. Some of these, such as the KKK, have deep roots in American history. Others are newer, formed in response to policies and shifts in our cultural landscape. Often these organizations imply defense of America and political ideals in their names, such as "Council of Conservative Citizens" and "American Family Association." Some, such as "White Aryan Resistance" and "Supreme White Alliance," are more direct in their associations. Nearly all posit an erosion of rights and values; a way of life that is becoming lost to immigrants; a diffusion or integration of population; and government overstep. Many of these groups preach a necessity for violence, through either outright or thinly veiled language. Membership in these organizations poses another topic for investigation, as their ranks are not just anti-government or pro-gun rights types who seek to defend the Constitution. Many are simply citizens who see their ideal for America as under threat by various groups—whether ethnic, racial, or religious. This unique reference will allow readers to explore the underlying issues central to understanding them. How do these hate groups get started, and why do people join?

True, James L., and Glenn H. Utter. Conservative Christians and Political Participation. ABC-CLIO, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400630774.

Abstract:
A timely exploration of the political history, growth, and impact of one of the most powerful religious groups in the United States. Conservative Christians and Political Participationexamines the involvement and influence of the growing number of Conservative Christians in America. A historical overview of the interaction of religion and politics from colonial times to today sets the stage for a deeper exploration into the demographics of this group, the concerns they share, and the creative methods they employ to achieve their goals through protests, political activity, leadership, and group organization. Case studies tackle highly emotional issues like same-sex marriage, decency in the mass media, school prayer, euthanasia, and American foreign policy toward Israel. The book also covers leaders such as Pat Buchanan and Ralph Reed, and discusses how they have been effective in their lobbying efforts through organizations like the Christian Action Network and the American Family Association.

Christiansen, Michaeol G., and Richard K. Stucky. Revision of the Wind River Faunas, Early Eocene of Central Wyoming. Part 15. New Nyctitheriidae (?Lipotyphla) with Analysis of the Relationships of North American Taxa. Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.55485/xmjs8079.

Full text
Abstract:
Among the fossilized remains of early Eocene mammals collected from the Buck Spring Quarries of Wyoming are the dentitions of several previously undescribed nyctitheriids. Comparison of this material (from the Lost Cabin Member of the Wind River Formation, late Wasatchian Land Mammal Age (LMA), Lost cabinian Land Mammal Subage (LMSA, Wa-7)) to closely related taxa requires the description of a new genus and species of nyctitheres, Acrodentis rosenorum, as well as a new species of Nyctitherium, N. krishtalkai. A. rosenorumis similar to closely related Nyctitherium and Leptacodon, but is set apart by its distinctively shaped anterodorsally curving paraconid, together with a protoconid and metaconid that project away from one another forming an open trigonid. In the upper teeth, the paracone and metacone also project in slightly different directions, suggesting the association of upper and lower molar morphology. The protocone is nearly centered laterally between the paracone and metacone, unlike Leptacodon, and the hypoconal shelf is less broadly expanded than in Nyctitherium. N. krishtalkai, though similar to N. velox and N. serotinum, differs from these species in that the cristid obliqua terminates where it strikes the postvallid, the hypoconulid does not as closely twin the entoconid, and the entoconid occurs slightly higher than the hypoconid. In the upper teeth, the conules and conular wings are more developed than in previously described species, the hypocones, though broadly expanded into shelves on M1–2, are less developed, and the paracone and metacone of M3are less reduced. The evolutionary context of these two new groups was investigated with a cladistic analysis based on dental characters, including species from the described genera Nyctitherium, Leptacodon, Plagioctenodon, Plagioctenoides, Pontifactor, Wyonycteris, and Limaconyssus. Palaeictopsspp. served as the outgroup. The results of this analysis suggest a close relationship between Acrodentis, Leptacodon, and Nyctitherium, in which A. rosenorumappears closely related to an ancestor intermediate between Leptacodon and Nyctitherium. N. krishtalkaiis the most primitive of its genus and is the most closely related to A. rosenorum. Whereas a cladistic analysis involving only nyctitheres should not be used as basis to divide the family, two major clades within the Nyctitheriidae of North America may exist: one including the genera Leptacodon, Plagioctenodon, Nyctitherium, and Acrodentisand the other including Wyonycteris, Limaconyssus, and “Plagioctenoides.”

Fisk, Nathan. Understanding Online Piracy. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216029663.

Full text
Abstract:
The complex world of online piracy and peer-to-peer file sharing is skillfully condensed into an easy-to-understand guide that provides insight into the criminal justice approach to illegal file sharing, while offering guidance to parents and students who have concerns about potential legal action in response to file-sharing activities. While the actual impact of digital piracy is nearly impossible to precisely calculate, the threat of financial damage from illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing to the world's highest-grossing entertainment firms (and even entire industries!) has garnered attention from government, industry, and academic leaders and criminal justice professionals. Oftentimes, those providing access to computers and file sharing capabilities-parents, schools, libraries-don't know about or understand these activities and, therefore, put themselves and their families at risk for criminal and civil prosecution. This work describes the technological, legal, social, and ethical facets of illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. Geared toward parents, teachers, librarians, students, and any other computer user engaged in file sharing, this book will help readers to understand all forms of traditional and digital copyright violations of protected music, movies, and software. To date over 18,000 P2P users have been sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Most of these users have been college students and parents of high-school students. While word of these law suits are spreading, and many parents fear that their children may be using a family computer to illegally download and share copyrighted works, few supervising adults have the technical knowledge needed to determine whether and to what extent pirating may be occurring via a computer and Internet connection they are legally responsible for. Additionally, while P2P networks are filled with millions of users with billions of copyrighted files, few users understand the ways in which they are illegally using computers and other mobile electronic devices to download protected content. While describing both technical and social issues, this book primarily focuses on the social aspects of illegal file sharing, and provides technical concepts at a general level. Fisk skillfully condenses the complex nature of file sharing systems into an easy-to-understand guide, provides insight into the criminal justice approach to illegal file sharing, and offers guidance to parents and students who have concerns about potential legal action in response to file sharing activities.
