Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper aims to present a study about gentrification in the Albergheria-Ballarò neighborhood in Palermo and the consequences of this process on the formalization of a local street market. The main focus will be on the neighborhood's transformations and the social role of the market. In particular, the article highlights how San Saverio Market plays a fundamental role of social dumping in the contrast to marginality, that the current process of formalization should carefully maintain.

Abstract:
Mapy kosmosu wewnętrznego. Opowiadanie J. G. Ballarda „The Reptile Enclosure” w świetle traktatu R. D. Lainga Polityka doświadczenia W roku 1962 J. G. Ballard opublikował manifest artystyczny „Which Way to Inner Space?”, w którym postulował, by twórcy ambitnej science fiction odeszli od powtarzalnych historii o galaktycznych przygodach, a zajęli się kosmosem wewnętrznym człowieka.

Abstract:
One sometimes has the experience of knowing two apparently unrelated bits of information—sometimes for years—until suddenly it occurs to one that they are in fact related and indeed illuminate each other in quite startling ways. I have had the good fortune to teach some of the Scots ballads for the last decade or so and have taught “Thomas Rhymer (A)” and ‘Tam Lin (A)” as exemplars of Scots Other World balladry. It is a truism (and the first piece of information) that the worldview of these ballads differs quite markedly from the medieval Catholic worldview that was current when these ballads may have originated and the Scots Presbyterian one that was the dominant ideology in the time and place when they were collected. Few ballad scholars would dispute this claim.

Abstract:
The article discusses the problem of the romance as a genre in Adam Mickiewicz’s poetic cycle Ballady i romanse (Ballads and Romances). So far scholars have paid attention mainly to Mickiewicz’s ballads and his innovative use of this genre, treating the romance as a ballad-like genre, without its own specifi city and rather marginal in the context of the developing romantic aesthetics. However, a closer analysis of the poems Kurhanek Maryli and Dudarz shows their distinctiveness within Mickiewicz’s poetic volume. The poet’s romance turns out to be a weak ballad of sorts, only stressing the potentiality of fantastic events. This genre can also be described as a contamination of the idyllic convention with elements of a horror ballad.

Abstract:
Thomas Percy’s ballad collection, Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, marks a point of intersection between balladry and Shakespeareana, which both went through a transitional phase from vocal performance to literary undertaking in the eighteenth century. In the Reliques, ballads that had been orally transmitted by minstrels were changed into validated printed sources for a scholarly project. This transition helped eighteenth-century editors gain a historical understanding of Shakespeare and emend his traditionally received texts. These editors were persuaded to use the ballads in the Reliques as reliable sources for their emendation since they were printed as authoritative documents that were useful for their academic editions of Shakespeare. They gained easy textual access to the printed ballads in the Reliques to search for contextual or emendatory materials. A comparison of four Shakespeare-related ballads in the Reliques (“King Cophetua and the Beggar-Maid,” “Take Thy Old Cloak about Thee,” “Willow, Willow, Willow,” and “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love”) to their counterparts in editions of Shakespeare reveals that the ballads that were printed as historical documents in the Reliques advanced the editors’ contextual illustration of Shakespeare and that they authorized the emendation of the textus receptus. This article focuses on the effect of the historical information provided by Percy’s printed ballads on George Steevens’s and Edmond Malone’s contextualization of Shakespeare and on their emendation of Shakespearean texts. In addition, it concentrates on the possibility that Edward Capell referred to Shakespearean ballads in Percy’s Reliques combined with old Quarto editions of Shakespeare’s works.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is the symbols characteristic to the genre of folk ballade. The object of this research is lyrics of the Russian folk ballads. The following compilations of ballads served as the material for this research: “Russian Ballad” (edited By V. I. Chernyshev, N. p. Andreev, 1936), “Folk Ballads” (edited by D. M. Balashov, A. M. Astakhova, 1963), “Russian Folk Ballad” (edited by D. M. Balashov, 1983), “Ballads” (edited by B. P. Kirdan, 2001), “Epics. Historical Song. Ballads” (edited by A. V. Kulagina, V. A. Kovpaka, 2008). The author carefully examines the peculiarities of ballad symbolism and its functions. In the course of research, the following conclusions were formulated: consistency of the genre order depends on the presence of the system of artistic visual means; central in the poetics of ballad belongs to symbolism, parallelism, antithesis, epithets, and metaphors; symbolism in the romantic ballads is presented quite extensively; often a symbolic situation becomes a part of psychological parallelism presented in many ballad concepts; syntactic parallelism can be placed in any thematic link and amplifies by antithesis. In certain instances, antithesis appears an important technique for creating a tragic effect. Ballad poetics is subordinated to explication of the overall genre trend, including the reflection of fundamental universals and principles. The novelty of this work consists in the attempt of textual analysis of the major compilations of ballads, as well as in selection of the symbols for their further analysis within the framework of implementation of genre characteristics.

Abstract:
Background: Gestational age is a critical factor in the management, decision making and follow up of new born infants. Identification of gestational age especially within 48 hours of life is crucial for new born. Since decades attempts have been made to find an alternative measurement for gestational age and birth weight estimation of the newborns. Last menstrual period is an inexpensive method and potentially efficient for calculating gestational age. Objective of this study was to the present study aims to compare the gestational age by New Ballards score with LMP, in pre term babies. Methods: A total 150 pre term babies who are born to mothers remembering LMP were enrolled for the study group. During the study period new Ballard scoring was done for babies within 48hrs and Gestational age was compared with LMP. The collected data was analyzed by using SAS-6.50 version. Study design a prospective observational study was conducted over a period of one year from January 2018 till December 2018 at Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru, IndiaResults: The New Ballard score is found to be significantly correlated with GA above 29 weeks (p<0.01). The LMP mean was 35±2.0 weeks. Total 60.6 % of the childbirth is lead to normal vaginal delivery. The analysis shows LMP were found to be strongly correlated with GA (p<0.01).Conclusions: LMP alone can be reliably used in assessing the gestational age and can be assessed more accurately and be confirmed with new Ballard’s scoring for preterm babies of >29 weeks.

Abstract:
Background Developing country such as Indonesia needs a toolto assess gestational age which is simple, practical, cheap, fast, and accurate. In 1991 the Ballard maturation score was refinedand expanded to achieve greater accuracy and called New Ballardscore. Objective The purpose of this study was to determine thecorrelation between gestational age assessed by New Ballard score,Ballard score, and by the first day of last menstrual period (LMP).Methods A cross sectional study has been carried out in Dr.Wahidin Sudirohusodo, Ibnu Sina, Labuang Baji, and St. FatimahHospitals in Makassar, from July 1 st , 2006 until January 31 st , 2007.This study included healthy newborns, aged 15 minutes to 24hours born to mothers who knew with certainty the first day oftheir LMP. Diagnostic test was used to analyze the data. Results There were 248 subjects included in this study. The resultsshowed that there was a strong correlation between gestationalage by LMP and New Ballard score (r=0.97), LMP and Ballardscore (r=0.95), as well as between New Ballard score and Ballardscore (r=0.99). New Ballard score was more accurate and had ahigher association coefficient (k=0.85) than did Ballard score(k=0.82) to LMP in identifying premature baby. The sensitivityof New Ballard score to identify premature baby was 87.7%,specificity 96.3%, positive predictive value 95.2% and negativepredictive value 90.2 %.Conclusions New Ballard score can be used to replace Ballardscore if LMP can not be assessed. Further study needs to be donewith bigger sample, involving other paramedics and unhealthynewborn babies.

Abstract:
Preterm birth is a primary outcome of interest in maternal vaccination trials but determination of gestational age is challenging in limited-resource settings. This study compares the New Ballard Score and fundal height measurements with the current standard of early ultrasound for sensitivity of predicting preterm birth. A trial of maternal influenza vaccination was conducted in Bamako, Mali. The New Ballard Score and fundal height were collected on 4038 infants born in the trial, ultrasound data were available for 1893 of those infants. New Ballard Score and fundal height were compared, consecutively, to all ultrasound results, early ultrasound results from the first trimester, and the date of last menstrual period for estimation of gestational age. Sensitivity of the New Ballard Score for identifying preterm infants was 0.33 compared with early ultrasound and 0.1 compared with the last menstrual period based estimates of gestational age. Sensitivity of low birth weight alone was 0.43 compared with early ultrasound. New Ballard Score estimated gestational age within 1 week of ultrasound more frequently than fundal height (53% compared with 7.6%, respectively) yet New Ballard Score identified few infants as preterm (1.8% vs 5.8% by early ultrasound), and was biased toward categorizing low birth weight infants and infants requiring hospitalization as preterm. New Ballard Score is not an ideal measure for identifying preterm births in low-resource settings. Despite the time and cost of training required for correct measurement of New Ballard Score, measurement of low birth weight alone performed better than New Ballard Score for identifying preterm infants.

Abstract:
Analysis of the poetics and music of Yiddish folk ballads reveals that the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe did not preserve German songs, widely popular among them up to the beginning of their gradual migration to the east, but instead developed a ballad repertoire of their own.The group of songs, designated as “medieval” by Sophia Magid, the author of a monumental study on the Yiddish ballad, includes both old ballads and those borrowed from the Germans towards the end of the 18th century and later. While the borrowed songs carried a similarity to the German originals as shown in their melodic contours, vocabulary, and plots, the old Yiddish ballads, though generally echoing both Slavic and Western European balladry, differed significantly. The article attempts to identify and characterize this older layer. It apparently first came into being in Central and Eastern Europe in the 15th 16th centuries and continued to develop until the new“urban” ballad emerged in the mid 1800s.The poetics and music of the Yiddish ballad reflect the genre’s hallmark – ballad-singing as a form of communication – which distinguished it from the Yiddish lyric song, performed “for oneself”. The ballad melodies lack melismatic embellishments and dramatic shifts; their tempo is usually moderate; some of them frequently feature the “Ionic minor” rhythmic pattern; many others resemble Klezmer dance music. These features reflect Yiddish ballad aesthetics: music is an ostensibly neutral frame for revealing a narrative that evokes emotions without referring to them directly. Two features of the international ballad canon – readiness to draw material from diverse sources, and a focus on the collective emotional response to key moments of everyday life–stimulated the formation of the indigenous Yiddish tradition. Its character also reflected the remoteness of Eastern Ashkenazi folk culture from rural Slavic folklore, and the lack of a permanent social function of balladsinging in the Ashkenazi tradition.

Abstract:
The article describes the influence of foreign, mainly German, literature on the ballads of the Philomaths – Tomasz Zan, Jan Czeczot and Adam Mickiewicz. The inspirations, references, and transformations of literary themes taken from German poets are presented in chronological order. The article begins with the answer to questions: why and how Zan used Lenora by Gottfried August Bürger in Neryna and Twardowski (common character and versification, intensifying the mood of horror). The full image of foreign references in this poet's work is completed by his version of Arion, based on the literary work by August Wilhelm Schlegel. Philomath used the character of a hero from Hellas, but he presented his fate in a dramatically condensed way. All these references lead to the conclusion that Zan transformed foreign threads in his own way, treating this activity as an exercise in his literary technique. A similar approach was shown by Jan Czeczot, who focused on native themes – but he added a large dose of humor, which was characteristic also of the most outstanding philosopher-writer, Adam Mickiewicz. The author of Ballady i romanse included in his collection a free translation of Friedrich Schiller’s Rękawiczka. He gave up the local color in it, creating a more “homely” version. In Świtezianka and Pierwiosnek, Mickiewicz referred to Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Świtezianka refers to Rybak with the motif of a fantastic figure emerging from the water. Pierwiosnek, like Fiołek, contains the lament of a metaphorical flower addressed to an insensitive lover. An analysis of Mickiewicz's references to his masters shows that this poet, like his friends, treated ballads as poetic exercises. He wanted to challenge his favorite writers. At the same time, these references confirm his manifestation of creative freedom. It turns out that the philomath ballads share the same approach to creation in this genre, which has been found in the example of transformations of material taken from foreign literature.

There is good evidence for the value of first-line management strategies such as psychological interventions and treatment of concurrent medical conditions, particularly pain, which are known to be effective (Ballard et al., 2009b). However, there are limited pharmacological treatment options for severe aggression, which causes significant risk, and for other severe BPSD which do not respond to first-line approaches. The only pharmacological intervention with an adequate evidence base is the prescription of atypical antipsychotics, where 18 placebo-controlled trials have evaluated the effect of treatment over 6–12 weeks. The literature indicates modest but significant benefits in the treatment of aggression and psychosis with risperidone and aripiprazole (Cohen's d standardized effect size of 0.2), uncertain benefits with olanzapine, and no benefits with quetiapine (Ballard and Howard, 2006; Schneider et al., 2006a; Ballard et al., 2009b; Corbett et al., 2012). Unfortunately, the benefits of longer term prescribing are more limited (Schneider et al., 2006b; Ballard et al., 2008) and there have been increasing concerns regarding the potential for serious adverse outcomes, including accelerated cognitive decline, stroke, and death (Schneider et al., 2006b; Ballard et al., 2009a). There is therefore an urgent imperative to identify more effective pharmacological treatments for severe BPSD which have a better safety profile, particularly for long-term treatment and prophylaxis. Despite this urgency, there has been very little effort toward developing or evaluating potential novel therapies for the treatment of key symptoms such as aggression, psychosis, restlessness, and apathy.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the article is to present the main stages of the development of the genre of literary ballades in Europe, which is directly related to the Russian ballade, and the ballads by V.A. Zhukovsky in particular, included in the secondary school Curriculum. The novelty of the study is due to the fact that the article views holistically the experiments of I.W. Goethe’s with folklore, L. Gleim’s with benkelzang; lyric-epic poems in the style of Rococo by L.G.K. Helti’s, the work of I. Leven’s, I.H. Gunter’s and G.A. Burger’s. Thus, when reviewing the main sources that influenced the building of the literary ballad genre in Germany, the folklore, literary, historical, biographical and parody aspects were clearly identified. In the analysis, the principles of cultural-historical, psychological, comparative methods, and the mythological school were used together. The article deals with the German ballade, because it was the poets of Germany of the XVIII century who paid close attention to the genre. The XVIII century for Germany is the time of cultural rise, when writers faced the question, among others, of creating new national literature. The ballad met many requirements for solving this problem, so it interested the poets. When creating a literary version of the genre, the national folklore was taken as the basis, but historical events, the literary situation of the time, and facts from the personal life were not overlooked. As the result, by the 70s of the XVIII century the main criteria of the genre had been developed, being embodied in G.A. Burger’s «Lenore». The latter was recognized by most German poets as the standard of the genre. «Lenore» was very popular in Russia, and was translated and interpreted in an original way by Russian poets, among whom a special role in this matter belongs to V.A. Zhukovsky.

We report on two independent failures to conceptually replicate findings by Ballard & Lewandowsky (Ballard and Lewandowsky 2015 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 373 , 20140464 (doi:10.1098/rsta.2014.0464)), who showed that certainty in, and concern about, projected public health issues (e.g. impacts of climate change) depend on how uncertain information is presented. Specifically, compared to a projected range of outcomes (e.g. a global rise in temperature between 1.6°C and 2.4°C) by a certain point in time (the year 2065), Ballard & Lewandowsky (Ballard and Lewandowsky 2015 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 373 , 20140464 (doi:10.1098/rsta.2014.0464)) showed that focusing people on a certain outcome (a global rise in temperature of at least 2°C) by an uncertain time-frame (the years 2054–2083) increases certainty in the outcome, and concern about its implications. Based on two new studies that showed a null effect between the two presentation formats, however, we recommend treating the projection statements featured in these studies as equivalent, and we encourage investigators to find alternative ways to improve on existing formats to communicate uncertain information about future events.

Abstract:
The writings of J.G. Ballard respond to the sciences in multiple ways; as such his (early) writing may productively be discussed as science fiction. However, the theoretical discipline to which he publicly signalled most allegiance, psychoanalysis, is one whose status in relation to science is highly contested and complex. In the 1960s Ballard signalled publicly in his non-fiction writing a belief in psychoanalysis as a science, a position in keeping with psychoanalysis’ contemporary status as the predominant psychological paradigm. Various early Ballard stories enact psychoanalytic theories, while the novel usually read as his serious debut, The Drowned World, aligns itself allusively with an oft-cited depiction by Freud of the revelatory and paradigm-changing nature of the psychoanalytic project. Ballard’s enthusiastic embrace of psychoanalysis in his early 1960s fiction mutated into a fascinatingly delirious vision in some of his most experimental work of the late 1960s and early 1970s of a fusion of psychoanalysis with the mathematical sciences. This paper explores how this ‘Marriage of Freud and Euclid’ is played out in its most systematic form in The Atrocity Exhibition and its successor Crash. By his late career Ballard was acknowledging problems raised over psychoanalysis’ scientific status in the positivist critique of Karl Popper and the work of various combatants in the ‘Freud Wars’ of the 1990s; Ballard at this stage seemed to move towards agreement with interpretations of Freud as a literary or philosophical figure. However, despite making pronouncements reflecting changes in dominant cultural appraisals of Freud, Ballard continued in his later writings to extrapolate the fictive and interpretative possibilities of Freudian and post-Freudian ideas. This article attempts to develop a deeper understanding of Ballard’s ‘scientific’ deployment of psychoanalysis in The Atrocity Exhibition and Crash within the context of a more fully culturally-situated understanding of psychoanalysis’ relationship to science, and thereby to create new possibilities for understanding the meanings of Ballard’s writing within culture at large.

In this study, in situ experiments were conducted to study the changing characteristics of the lateral and longitudinal resistance of a ballast bed, and a three-dimensional model for the ballast bed and sleeper was constructed based on the discrete-element method. The effects of the lateral and longitudinal resistance of the ballast bed, such as gravel ballast grading, sleeper depth, the angle of the shoulder slope, and ballast bed shoulder width, among others, were studied. The results suggest that (1) the lateral and longitudinal resistance of the ballast bed increases with the widening of ballast grading, and within the size distribution limits, the resistance of the ballast bed satisfies the specification; (2) the lateral and longitudinal resistance of ballast bed increases with an increase in the sleeper depth and the resistance of ballast bed satisfies the specifications for sleeper depth greater than 150 mm; (3) the lateral resistance of the ballast bed increases with a decrease in the angle of the shoulder slope, whereas the longitudinal resistance remains unchanged and the resistance of the ballast bed satisfies the specifications for slope gradient of 1:1.75 or less; and finally, (4) the lateral resistance of the ballast bed increases with the widening of the ballast bed shoulder, whereas the longitudinal resistance remains unchanged, and the resistance of ballast bed satisfies the specifications when the shoulder width is greater than 400 mm.

Abstract The objective of the research is a railway ballast layer created from new and recycled ballast particles in different ratio. In order to study the possibility of using recycled ballast grains in ballast layer, it is necessary to carry out laboratory triaxial tests of ballast crushed stone with size of the particles 25-60 mm with different grain shape. Abrasion testing machine allows to reach the effect on new ballast, which is similar to abrasion of ballast particles in the railway track. Therefore, it is possible to create ballast samples from (new) mixed and recycled ballast and estimate which proportion has the strength characteristics, which are close to the ones in ballast layer created only with new ballast particles. The result of the study shows, that it makes sense to return the recycled crushed stone in a mix with a new one in order to reduce the cost on a railway maintenance.

Abstract:
Ballast fouling is a major factor that contributes to the reduction of shear strength of railway ballast, which can further affect the stability of railway supporting structure. The major sources of ballast fouling include infiltration of foreign fines into the ballast material and ballast degradation induced by train movement on the supported tracks. In this paper, a discrete element model is developed and used to simulate the shear stress–strain response of fouled ballast assembly subjected to direct shear loading. A simplified computational approach is then proposed to model the induced ballast fouling and capture the mechanical response of the ballast at various levels of contamination. The approach is based on the assumption that fine particles comprising the fouling material will not only change the interparticle friction angle, but also the contact stiffness between the ballast particles. Therefore, both the interparticle friction coefficient and effective modulus are adjusted based on a fouled ballast model that is validated using experimental results. The effect of ballast degradation is also investigated by gradually changing the particle size distribution of the ballast assembly in the discrete element model to account for the increased range of particle sizes. Using the developed model, the effect of ballast degradation on the shear strength is then evaluated. Conclusions are made to highlight the suitability of these approximate approaches in efficiently modeling ballast assemblies under shear loading conditions.

Abstract:
Ballast flight significantly affects the safe operation of high-speed railway. A wind tunnel experiment and computational fluid dynamics simulation were performed to investigate the occurrence and development mechanism of ballast flight from the perspective of individual particles, which was based on the capture, reconstruction, and analysis approach of ballast features. The dynamic characteristics of ballast particles under wind load, the flow field characteristics such as the distribution of air pressure and streamline, and the influence of the ballast mass and shape, windward direction, and wind speed on the ballast flight were investigated. The results show that the critical velocity of the ballast weighing from 5 g to 200 g is between 14.22 m/s and 29.89 m/s. The massive ballast with the shape of an oblate is unlikely to fly. The air pressure difference is proportional to the square of the wind speed, and it increases 14.9 times when the wind speed increases from 10 m/s to 40 m/s. In order to avoid ballast flight, recommended suggestions include limiting the proportions of the small and the ellipsoid ballast praticles, laying the ballast with high density and a large size on the top of the ballast bed, and reducing the degradation and fouling of the ballast bed.

Abstract:
We adopted two-way coupling of discrete and finite elements to examine the non-spherical ballast flow characteristics in a slurry pipe system during a shield project. In the study, we considered the slurry rheological property and the flake shape of the ballast. A ballast size between 17 and 32 mm under different slurry flow rates and ballast volumetric concentration conditions was investigated for determining the law through which the mass flow rate, detained mass percentage, and ballast distribution state are influenced. The results indicate that increasing slurry flow rate and the ballast volumetric concentration increase the mass flow rate; the influence of the latter is stronger. Increases in both in the slurry flow rate and the ballast volumetric concentration can reduce the detained mass percentage in the slurry discharging pipeline, whereas increasing the ballast size has the opposite effect. The increase in both the slurry flow rate and the ballast size changes the ballast motion state. Experiments verified the numerical lifting model of the ballast in the vertical pipeline. The measurements of the actual pipeline wall thickness verified that the simulation results regarding the ballast distribution were accurate.

Abstract:
AbstractRailroad ballast structure layer may experience a decline in mechanical and geometrical performance due to heavy train and environmental loads. In order to improve the quality of ballast structure, the addition of asphalt to ballast layer can be considered as a solution. Therefore, this research utilizes 60/70 penetration grade asphalt for ballast layer binding and stabilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate and analyze the mechanical behavior of clean-ballast and fouled-ballast layers with 2% and 4% penetration grade 60/70 asphalt poured in one (ballast surface layer) and three ballast surface layers. Compressive strength test was performed to analyze the weight of specimen, vertical deformation, and ballast material abrasion. The most prominent finding to emerge from this research was that the use of 60/70 penetration grade asphalt on ballast surface layer is crucial in retaining the load applied by UTM, in order to produce preferable load distribution to the entire ballast structure. It is found that, the higher the 60/70 penetration grade asphalt proportion and the more layers poured with asphalt, the stronger asphalt in reducing ballast abrasion percentage.

The human-mediated transfer of harmful organisms via shipping, especially via ballast water transport, has raised considerable attention especially in the last decade due to the negative associated impacts. Ballast water sampling is important to assess the compliance with ballast water management requirements (i.e. compliance monitoring). The complexity of ballast water sampling is a result of organism diversity and behaviour which may require different sampling strategies, as well as ship design implications including availability of ballast water sampling points. Abstract:
Abstract Railway ballast tamping is one of the cost-expensive renewal and maintenance works of railway superstructure. The quality of ballast consolidation influences its resistance to residual deformations and long-term deterioration of track geometry. The process of ballast compaction along the sleeper under the vibration loading is complex and depends on many factors. The ballast flow processes under the vibration loading can produce both consolidation and un-consolidation of ballast material. The present study is devoted to the experimental investigation of ballast consolidation inhomogeneity. The method of ballast local consolidation measurement is proposed. The method is based on the velocity of impact wave propagation that is measured with device. The application of modern microcontroller and sensor techniques provided simple and reliable multi-point velocity measurements in a ballast layer. That enables well enough spatial resolution of ballast consolidation inhomogeneity. The measurement analysis has shown more than 4 times higher consolidation under the sleeper center than for unconsolidated ballast.
