Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with the assessment of the reliability of processes at the packaging center in the company CommScope Czech Republic s.r.o. The first part of the work is research about options for quality management using ISO 9000 standards, but also TQM approaches. At the same time, methods and analytical techniques are discussed, which will be further used in the practical part of this thesis. The following section introduces CommScope Inc. and its main product - optical fiber. The practical part contains an introduction to the packaging center and its processes, it also describes the analysis of the reliability of the original state and proposals for corrective measures that were designed within the Kaizen event. The rest of the work is then devoted to the implementation of the proposed changes and their economic assessment. Finally, an evaluation of the methods used, the results achieved and other recommendations are given.

Abstract:
Phosphorus flowing via rivers into the Baltic Sea is a major source of nutrients, and in some cases the limiting factor for the growth of algae which causes the phenomenon known as eutrophication. Remote sensing of phosphorus, here using Landsat TM-data, can help to give a better understanding of the process of eutrophication. Since Landsat TM-data is used, this could form a basis for further spatio-temporal analysis in the Baltic Sea region. A method originally described and previously applied for a Chinese river is here transferred and applied to three different rivers flowing into the Baltic Sea. The results show that by measuring the proxy variables of Secchi Depth and Chloryphyll-a the remote sensing model is able to explain 41% of the variance in total- phosphorus for the rivers Dalälven, Norrström and Gavleån without any consideration taken to CDOM, turbidity or other local features.

Abstract:
Our understanding of turbot and flounder ecology in the Baltic Sea is insufficient for sound management decisions. This thesis aims to fill some gaps in current knowledge by providing information of the ecology of turbot and flounder within their juvenile habitat, and to relate these findings to issues assumed relevant for recruitment variation. Main focus is on turbot due to its relatively low abundance and high variability in recruitment. The distribution of both species was studied on different scales, as was environmental effects on food consumption in 0-group turbot. The 0-group turbot display a relatively restricted spatial distribution compared to flounder. This is possibly due to a more specialized diet, which may make them more vulnerable to habitat degradation, especially eutrophication as a strong negative correlation was found with the organic content in the sediment. The species show high temporal and spatial overlap when settling in July-September, with peak abundances in August, and at depths <1 m. Both species display sedentary behavior within the nursery ground. Compared to flounder, turbot was more mobile potentially due to its restricted diet calling for extended searches. For turbot, feeding conditions appear to vary between size groups, which potentially could cause variations in survival between years through size-selective mortality. But, the predation may be low in central Baltic Sea as the abundance of the main predator, brown shrimp are comparatively low during flatfish occupancy. A significant positive relationship was found between the recruitment of turbot and flounder, which suggests that no inter-specific interactions during the juvenile stage affect recruitment. This co-variation also suggests that the recruitment of the species is determined by the same phenomena, potentially by large scale abiotic factors during the egg- and larval stage. For turbot, additional variability is potentially generated during the juvenile stage due to its relatively restricted food and habitat requirements. The specific habitat demands of turbot revealed in this thesis may be used to protect and restore essentially nursery grounds.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper examines what happened when Sweden recognized Estonia and Latvia as sovereign states. The recognising process was part of what during the time was called "the Baltic problem". The Baltic problem was the new situation that arose around the Baltic Sea after World War I in 1918, where several new states were added. Sweden's geostrategic position was considerably better but the time after the war was a turbulent period in Sweden. Sweden needed to take into account how the victorious powers Britain and France acted in international politics. In this situation Sweden was faced with the decision to recognize the new states. This paper used the theoretical perspectives of "realism" and "idealism". Realism says that states do not respect international law, unless it is in the state's self-interest. Instead realism empathizes that the realpolitik and power politics are the main instruments of the state to achieve security. Idealism emphasizes that states will gladly take into account international law because it is morally right and also emphasizes the democratic institutions and economic cooperation to create an interdependency between states and thus achieve security. Sweden takes into account international law in the sense that Sweden wants to admit the two states when they meet the constitutional criteria. However, Sweden chose to not recognize any of the states before Britain and France had recognized them. Sweden's cautious behaviour towards the recognition and the negative attitude towards closer cooperation on security issues provide support to the realism as the theory that best explains Sweden's actions in their relationship with the newly proclaimed states of Estonia and Latvia.

Abstract:
This thesis is an ethnography of children's practice and performance of dance, music and song in the village of Keramas, Gianyar, South-central Bali. Focusing upon power relationships between adults and children and between children themselves in the setting of a Balinese dance studio (sanggar tan), I examine how adults exercise power over children and teenagers in the context of traditional Balinese dance. Furthermore, I investigate the ways in which children incorporate contemporary influences into their songs, games and disco dance performances, thereby exercising agreater degree of power over their own activities. While dance is central to Bali-Hindu religious practice, it is also a medium used to communicate . important aspects of what it means to be Balinese to children. Looking at children's participation in dance activities, I explore how children relate to the world that surrounds them. By moving through tradition children not only perpetuate Balinese traditional dance, 'but also actively engage with global influences. The thesis is divided into six chapters which chronologically follow the journey of children's dance and music . ac. tivities, from lullabies .. through traditional dance to disco dance performances. Although children's songs and lore have received previous attention from scholars, research focusing upon music and dance activities of children still remains on the periphery of ethnomusicological enquiry. By examining children's songs and their learning, practice and performance of traditional and popular dance, I sh~w how dance, music and song are integral elements in the lives of young Balinese. This ethnographic account seeks to provide an insight into research pertaining to Bali as well as to form the foundation for future studies regarding children and the role of music and dance in their everyday lives.

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with theoretical problem: it seeks to resolve the issues of what determines the competition of identity ideologies, what its manifestations are and what variations of demonstration of belonging and separateness of the population in a particular city of the South-Eastern Baltic Sea region can be created by this competition. The city of Klaipėda and the 20th century are taken as spatial and temporal boundaries of the study, thereby realising that the processes of the competition of identity ideologies which took place in Klaipėda were more general and incidental to many cities of particular South-Eastern Baltic Sea region. This is regarded as the case analysis in a comparative context, which aims at producing generalizations, limited by one case empirical data, of phenomena generic to many cities of the South-Eastern Baltic Sea region, and thereby to contribute to generalization of competition of identity ideologies incidental to multiple cases on the basis of a single case. The objective of the doctoral dissertation is to disclose the influence of the competition of the main consolidating identity ideologies in the public communication space of the city of Klaipėda on the identity of inhabitants of this city in the 20th century and formulate the pattern of the competition of such identity ideologies in the city of the South-Eastern Baltic Sea region on the ground of empirical data. In attaining this objective, the dissertation: 1) analyses the semantics... [to full text]

Abstract:
In the town of Grobiņa in Latvia several cemeteries with grave goods and burial traditions that could be linked to Gotland have been excavated, as well as cemeteries of local type. The town itself has been interpreted as the site of a Vendel age settlement, possibly beginning around 650 AD. The aim of this thesis is to study the characteristics of the settlement and in particular its relation to Gotland. A study of the age of circular disc brooches discovered in and around Grobiņa has also been carried out as a part of the analysis. This type of brooches is very typical for Gotland during Vendel and Viking age.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation aims to contribute to the research on determinants of the commitment of donor countries in the area of development aid. Given the progress of a universalist approach towards studying these determining factors (an approach aiming to identify common independent variables for the donor community as a whole), the dissertation takes the position of challenging the current research while, at the same time, enriching it. The main challenge, empirical as well as methodological, lies within the choice of a specific case study, which is the commitment of the Baltic states. Empirically, the specificity of the Baltic countries relates to their historical context, that is, their accession to the EU and their obligation to contribute to the efforts of the European donor community. Yet another specificity relates to the lack of relevant data and systematic research on the subject. Considering the biases which may result from this state of play concerning the Baltic countries, the dissertation frames their commitment in a comparative perspective with regard to the Visegrad Four, which possess relevant experience from the pre-1989 period. Despite the lack of their own national experience, the Baltic states deploy efforts akin to those of the Visegrad countries. Hence, their commitment reveals itself as a complex sociopolitical reality, determined by factors other than incrementalism or the EU’s pressure. The commitment appears as a process of intergovernmental emulation. A social nature of this process is however less linked to an unconditional belief in what is considered to be appropriate than to a reasoned effort not to stand out among one’s peers

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to, from an institutional approach, study how the Stockholm importers within the textile sector adapted their foreign trade to the change in economic policy 1720 through 1738. The focus is to investigate to what extent the introduction of new laws, regulations etc. can be an explanation for what happened to Stockholm’s foreign trade, mainly imports, particularly textile imports during the period. It is mainly the economic policies that had been enacted during the Hornian government and their effects that have been studied. This is a period that has seldom been studied in other research.

This thesis begins when the Russian raids were over. This was a year when the foreign trade still was relatively free and was untouched by the 17th century’s regulations. After 1721 the policies that would be introduced to increase Sweden's level of self-sufficiency and strengthen ties with the North Sea area had several components. Besides the economic policy, the main sources for the thesis are the city toll records.

The trade policies in the shape of tolls and fees, import and consumption bans etc. and the commercial policies together became different kinds of political tools used for several purposes. The conclusion of this thesis is that the economic policies made the Stockholm importers adapt their trade to the change. The import bans and sumptuary laws had an effect. The economic policies gave rise to an increase in the import of textile raw materials. The rise in toll costs and import fees contributed to displacing the foreign trade towards other areas. The change in the economic policies was successful in the sense that it gave rise to new conditions for domestic production within the textile sector and forced Stockholm's importers to adapt their foreign trade.

Abstract:
By the middle of the 19th century, the Baltic area is regarded by the British as a far-off, underdeveloped periphery, although there exist privileged relationships linked to the romantic attraction of Scandinavia, the economic importance of the region as supplier of essential raw materials and its geographical location in the vicinity of the Russian rival of the Great Game. Considering this special link, the socio-economic potential of the Nordic countries, and the necessity to multiply Britain’s commercial outlets, the various British actors hope, after the advent of liberalism, to participate in the region’s development, and even benefit from it at economic level. Yet, if, during the second half of the nineteenth century, many British merchants, entrepreneurs, capitalists or engineers do take an active part in the takeoff and modernisation of the Baltic regions, diplomatic and economic developments, whose main features are a rising Germany, more stable relations with Russia, and a stubbornly negative trade balance, lead Britain to continually reconsider its regional role until the international tensions of the early twentieth century

Abstract:
In coastal ecosystems, phytoplankton composition, distribution and dynamics are strongly influenced by spatial and temporal variations of hydrological structures and biogeochemical parameters, consequences of natural and anthropogenic pressures. Reference monitoring, due to its low spatial and temporal resolution, may fail to detect key events as the initiation and end of phytoplankton outbursts or harmful algal blooms (HABs). By increasing the spatial and/or temporal resolution as well as completing taxonomical counting by investigating the phytoplankton whole size spectra, the use of automated sensors may allow contributing to a better understanding of the distribution and dynamics of this major player in biogeochemichal cycles, at the basis of most foof webs. This thesis consists in studying the characteristics of phytoplankton functional groups defined from their optical properties at the single-cell level, in relation to spatio-temporal variability encountered in contrasting marginal seas, applying the pulse shape-recording automated flow cytometry. This functional classification reflects the diversity of particles according to morphological and physiological properties. First of all, the distribution of phytoplankton groups and their traits where explored in the Western and Central English Channel during the summer period. Most groups formed patches of abundance and biomass near the Ushant front and were structured at the sub-mesoscale. Secondly, phytoplankton functional groups dynamics was characterized in the Eastern English Channel and Southern North Sea during the development period of diatoms and Phaeocystis globosa spring groups, by calculating LCBD and SCBD, wich allowed the observation of spatial segregation between phytoplankton groups. Their distribution was explained by the niche parameters (marginality and tolerance). Finally, the vertical distribution of phytoplankton functional groups in a salinity gradient was addressed in the Baltic Sea, in relation to the biogeochemical properties of the water masses and the characteristics of each PFGs. The variations of the traits are thus stand out as the best predictors of the horizontal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton groups with the respect to niche parameters and spatial descriptors (dispersion, physical and biological parameters). The functional approach, derived from phytoplankton optical properties addressed by automated flow cytometry, coupled to the niche analysis, make it possible to better explain and predict community responses to environmental gradients, such responses being detected in parallel by diversity indices. This dissertation tries to revisit the canon of translated literature history of China-- Bali Chahwanü Yishi, cotranslated by Lin Shu and Wang Shouchang and published in 1899. Combining the methdology of comparative literature and cultural studies with translation/ rewriting studies as well as journal studies, I intend to expand the research on the translation Bali Chahwanü Yish not only“intercultural” translations known as “translation” , but also “intracultural”translations, which Susan Bassnett and André Lefevere propose to call “rewritings”, such as histories, critical articales, commentaries, anthologies, anything that contributes to constructing the “image”of a writer and/or a work of literature. On Bali Chahwanü Yishi’s case, I examine Lin’s translation, namely “intercultural”translation first. Including his translation style, how he transforming his sorrow of losing wife into words and rewriting La Dame aux Camélias into classical Chinese short story. I also discuss the conditions which new translations emerged. Based on the May Fourth generation’s new norms of translation, Lin’s translation soon turned to be the object attacted by new translators. Second, in my“intracultural”translations studies, I explore two genre (drama and fiction), mainly focus on four domains which intellectuals participated in during early 20th century China (1899-1929). They are the groups of students abrord, actors, courtesans, and newspaperman. Part one focuses on drama’s discussion. I try to present drama reform plans and to examine actors’ practices. On Chunliushe’s adapting Bali Chahwanü Yishi, Li Shutong, combining his Shanghai Hu Society’s (滬學會) experiences with Japan’s Literature and Art association’s(文藝協會)assertions, created the first Chinese modern drama. On Shanghai New Stage’s case, Twentieth Century New Camélias created a brand new meaning when the actors actually participated in the Xinhai Revolution. From this viewpoint, the historic significance of the actors’ performance lied in both their fulfillment of reform plans and their eminent contributions in building a new country--The Republic of China. Part two focuses on fiction’s discussion. Standing on rereading Hongloumeng’s viewpoint, I try to demonstrate that in the process of imitating Bali Chahwanü Yishi, known as western Hongloumeng, Zhong Xinqing’s New Camélias have created cultural translation between 19th century Shanghai’s foreign settlement and 18th century Paris. On Xü Zhenia’s Yulihun, we see oriental Dumas have been born. Xü Zhenia wrote down his confessional fiction based on his own affair by combining the image of Daiyü’s burying flowers in Hongloumeng with the arrangement of Marguerite’s diary appeared in last two chapters of Bali Chahwanü Yishi . Here comes my conclusions: 1. Lian Qichao as the son of public opinion in late Qing period caused huge influence on rewriting texts ; 2. Different horizons created diverse literary rewriting modes ; 3. The whole early 20th century China’s culture and society as a text is the dynamic power of rewriting ; 4. The translation Bali Chahwanü Yishi is effective catalyzer and the afterlifes of the translation are the field mingled with historical reality and social ideology ; 5. We must revalue late Qing’s translations and reconsider the status of transalted literature in literary history of China.

Abstract:
No
By early 1920, literally hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war still had not been repatriated between Russia and Central Europe. To rectify matters a major humanitarian initiative followed, carried out largely under the auspices of the League of Nations. In a little less than two years, 427,886 people were repatriated. Of these, 406,091 were transported through the Baltic region. This paper highlights the important role of British officials in managing the ambitious project and emphasizes that Estonia, and Narva especially, played a pivotal role facilitating movement between East and West. The success of the venture meant that subsequent humanitarian agreements concluded in the 1920s built on international success rather than failure.
