Abstract:

Abstract:
Time has become a daily concern for adults and the possibilities of what to do with it –if the day had more hours– are an unreachable dream. The hurried lifestyle that comes with having a daily routine between work, studies and home, leaves the human being in an endless loop of events that only make them more stressed. So how do we transform those lives that normally are reactive to change? The path to self-knowledge and personal balance is only possible through movement, relaxation and mindful eating. Nowadays, the companies in our country that offer options to lead a healthy and active life, focus on traditional activities located in a establishment with standard exercises. This research aims to discover the preferences of a training that integrates the physical, mental and mindful eating area from an online platform so that users can access the workshops wherever they are and whenever they want. For this purpose, it was designed a mixed methodology, through the quantitative technique (survey and MVP) and qualitative (semi-structured interview) to an audience of Lima residents between 25 and 35 years old, in order to validate the viability of the project. The results showed that the project responds to the demand of the proposed digital workshops; but it also leaves us the constant challenge of adding other workshops according to the tren and preference in order to the same philosophy of the project

Abstract:
Research on inverted pendulum has gained momentum over the last decade on a number of robotic laboratories over the world; due to its unstable proprieties is a good example for control engineers to verify a control theory. To verify that the pendulum can balance we can make some simulations using a closed-loop controller method such as the linear quadratic regulator or the proportional–integral–derivative method. Also the idea of robotic teleoperation is gaining ground. Controlling a robot at a distance and doing that precisely. However, designing the tool to takes the best benefit of the human skills while keeping the error minimal is interesting, and due to the fact that the inverted pendulum is an unstable system it makes a compelling test case for exploring dynamic teleoperation. Therefore this thesis focuses on the construction of a two-wheel inverted pendulum robot, which sensor we can use to do that, how they must be integrated in the system and how we can use a human to control an inverted pendulum. The inverted pendulum robot developed employs technology like sensors, actuators and controllers. This Master thesis starts by presenting an introduction to inverted pendulums and some information about related areas such as control theory. It continues by describing related work in this area. Then we describe the mathematical model of a two-wheel inverted pendulum and a simulation made in Matlab. We also focus in the construction of this type of robot and its working theory. Because this is a mobile robot we address the theme of the teleoperation and finally this thesis finishes with a general conclusion and ideas of future work.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse the discourses drawn upon by community paediatric nurses in relation to children’s rights to health. The philosophy of Michel Foucault has been used to underpin the analysis of the interviews and exemplars of five experienced community nurses, revealing conflicting power relationships and discourses. Rights are formalised morality and so from a children’s rights perspective, discourses reflect both the moral and ethical positions of the nurses. Children are constructed as developing human beings whose moral status gradually changes and who, through a lack of developmental autonomy, entrust their decision-making to their representatives (parents and caregivers) as their trustees. Rights are correlative with the obligations and duties toward children by both families and society. Society constructs legislative and politically organised structures to govern raising children because children are an intrinsic social concern. Whilst representing society’s interest in children’s rights to health, nurses in the home act as a conduit for multiple governing structures. The nurses in this study construct their “truths” and knowledge about children’s health rights from nursing, medicine, law, education, and social policy. However, the values of individual parents can conflict with universal values for children’s health and wellbeing. Therefore representing society positions nurses as “agents of the state”, a role that potentially holds power over parents and children and leads to the epithet of “the health police”. Within the institution of the family, and in the privacy of the home, there are also mechanisms of power that can resist the mechanisms of the state and its representatives. Therefore the discourse “it takes a village to raise a child” competes with the “my home is my castle” discourse. Nurses negotiate a fine balance between these power relations. Nurses are challenged with using power productively to promote children’s rights whilst respecting the role of parents and families. I argue that children’s rights are central to the moral and ethical work of nurses but that such work is often obscured and invisible. I propose that children’s community nurses are excellent at negotiating networking and connecting at a micro level, but need to create a more sophisticated and cohesive entity at a macro level to become fully political children’s rights advocates.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis was to study the angular and linear accelerations that occur at the head during quiet standing in healthy humans. To date, there were few descriptions of linear head accelerations in quiet standing, and no focus on angular head accelerations. The contribution of the vestibular system to standing balance can be better understood from recognizing these, the stimuli that the system experiences during the task. Head accelerations were measured under four manipulations of sensory condition, and RMS and median frequency values were reported for linear and angular head accelerations in Reid’s planes. Coherence was also calculated between force plate forces and head accelerations, and between lower leg EMG and angular head accelerations in the directions of the semi-circular canals. This study considered two factors in the manipulation of quiet standing sway: vision (eyes open/closed) and surface (hard/compliant foam). The results show that angular head accelerations are repeatable under full sensory conditions, and that angular head acceleration RMS is above known vestibular thresholds in all tested sensory conditions. Linear head acceleration absolute maximum and RMS values matched previous reports under similar conditions. Significant coherence was found below 7Hz in both coherence analyses, likely due to the mechanical linkage. This coherence also showed defined troughs in varying regions, which were attributed to the interference of active systems (visual, somatosensory and vestibular) on the mechanical propagation of forces. The results also reinforced that the inverted pendulum model is valid in quiet standing on a hard surface in the sagittal and frontal planes. This study shows that the vestibular system is able to detect sway at the head during quiet standing under all four sensory conditions tested. Consequently, the vestibular system may play a range of roles in quiet standing, which may change as its relative importance in balance increases. The measurement of head accelerations is confirmed as a useful technique in studying balance in quietly standing humans.

Abstract:
Obesity affects balance control. There are two possible contributing factors to this reduced balance control: biomechanical and sensory. The increased mass, that is centrally located on the abdomen, causes an increased gravitational torque about the ankle joint. This increased ankle torque requires greater muscular strength and this introduces greater variability into the control system and results in larger body oscillations. The second component that has not yet been identified is suggested to result from the effects that an increased in body mass has on the plantar sole mechanoreceptors. These mechanoreceptors participate in body sway awareness and it is thought that the additional mass of the body may alter the sensitivity of these mechanoreceptors and reduce the quality of the feedback afferent signal and this may then lead to larger body sway. This thesis explores both of these hypotheses. In order to observe how muscular strength affects the mechanical contributions towards quiet standing we performed two separate projects. The first project evaluated how weight loss affected muscular strength and standing balance control. The second project involved measuring balance control in a group of athletic individuals who were well trained but had a body mass index (BMI) similar to obese individuals. Together, both projects demonstrated that balance control is not significantly associated by quadriceps maximal voluntary contraction strength in the obese population during normal quiet standing. In a third project, we evaluated whether obesity affects balance control in elderly females. To single out the role of obesity, balance control of normal weight elderly women was compared to that of obese elderly women. We found that obesity contributes to reduced balance control in elderly individuals. This has important implications as a falls risk factor in this population. We also performed two projects investigating the sensory contributions to reduced balance control. The first project involved cooling the plantar sole and measuring balance control. A short term effect of reduced balance control was found. This demonstrates that reducing the sensation of the plantar sole affects standing balance control. The final project in this thesis measured the effects of two things on plantar sole sensitivity; the effects of adding a short term mass to the body and the position of the center of pressure relative to a point of stimulation. In conditions with increased pressure on the plantar sole we found reduced sensitivity in the plantar sole. This has implications for explaining the reduced balance control in obesity. In conclusion, this thesis explores biomechanical and sensory contributions to standing balance control.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania residents are proud of their agricultural heritage. They do not want to see their farmland disappear. But the County continues to be developed into residential subdivisions. This thesis explores the inconsistency in the perspectives and actions of residents regarding farmland preservation and development. Contrary to what you might expect, those in the County who want to preserve farmland and those who are developing the land are often the same people. Individuals talk about the importance of saving farmland, even though they just bought a home that was built on what was an active farm. Farmers, who have a deep connection with the County's land and know its importance, choose to develop their farms. It's not a complete mystery as to why this is happening, but it is a wonder how these individuals deal with their personal inconsistencies. How do such individuals confront the inconsistencies that they face? Furthermore, how do they justify their actions regarding the development of farmland? How do these groups of people as individuals see themselves in relation to the conflict between farmland preservation and development? Are they simply ambivalent?
(cont.) In an attempt to find out, I interviewed Lancaster County residents in two locations in the County where a farm had been developed into their single family homes. The farmer owners/developers were interviewed as well. The interviewees respond in numerous ways, but they all expressed a desire for balance. They support farmland preservation efforts, but they also believe that growth is necessary. This "balance" is how they expressed their ambivalence towards the subject. The interviews showed specific ways that information can enlighten the balance between development and farmland preservation. The County government is encouraged to take on the provision of information as a tool of intervention in this area. An informed public can then make better choices as to what the "balance" will look like. Local governments are responsible for implementing this balance by using zoning to control and direct development away from the County's agricultural land. Coordinated action in the County is required to avoid the County's farming character tragically disappearing.

Steel represents societal obligations. Stone (river rock) is specific to place and representative of family. With these juxtaposed elements I strive to create sculptural forms of wonder and contemplation. I attempt to interpret and understand my involvement with the complex world through the process of creating sculpture.

Abstract:
Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for all life on our planet. During the past century anthropogenic consumption of P has reached critically unsustainable levels, the mining of finite phosphate rock and the dispersion of this resource could lead to resource scarcity in the future. The need to increase knowledge and understanding for the P system is an essential part of sustainable decision making. In this thesis the P balance of Sweden is characterised and quantified using material flow analysis methodology. Furthermore, the study provides a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding of the current state of P balance in Sweden. Major challenges are highlighted and further improvement potential is established for the Swedish flows of P. The major identified contributors to the Swedish P balance are the consumption of mineral fertilizers, the consumption patterns in society and the waste management. Moreover, there is a need to reduce the emissions of P to the environment in order to preserve natural state. The most effective ways of reducing the emissions are to reduce inputs to the system and improve the system efficiency through technical solutions, political tools and financial incentives. It is important to reduce emissions without shifting of burdens onto others. The anthropogenic activities in Sweden have a significant impact on the environment, this is due to Sweden importing P fertilizer that is added to the system. Nevertheless, there is a large potential for improvement of P resource management, where recycling and reuse of P is highlighted. Furthermore, Sweden has historically proven that political action and financial incentives are effective in reducing emissions.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on four papers dealing with two different areas of mathematics.Paper I–III are in combinatorics, while Paper IV is in mathematical physics. In combinatorics, we work with design theory, one of whose applications aredesigning statistical experiments. Specifically, we are interested in symmetric incompleteblock designs (SBIBDs) and triple arrays and also the relationship betweenthese two types of designs. In Paper I, we investigate when a triple array can be balanced for intersectionwhich in the canonical case is equivalent to the inner design of the correspondingsymmetric balanced incomplete block design (SBIBD) being balanced. For this we derivenew existence criteria, and in particular we prove that the residual designof the related SBIBD must be quasi-symmetric, and give necessary and sufficientconditions on the intersection numbers. We also address the question of whenthe inner design is balanced with respect to every block of the SBIBD. We showthat such SBIBDs must possess the quasi-3 property, and we answer the existencequestion for all know classes of these designs. As triple arrays balanced for intersections seem to be very rare, it is natural toask if there are any other families of row-column designs with this property. In PaperII we give necessary and sufficient conditions for balanced grids to be balancedfor intersection and prove that all designs in an infinite family of binary pseudo-Youden designs are balanced for intersection.Existence of triple arrays is an open question. There is one construction of aninfinite, but special family called Paley triple arrays, and one general method forwhich one of the steps is unproved. In Paper III we investigate a third constructionmethod starting from Youden squares. This method was suggested in the literaturea long time ago, but was proven not to work by a counterexample. We show interalia that Youden squares from projective planes can never give a triple array bythis method, but that for every triple array corresponding to a biplane, there is asuitable Youden square for which the method works. Also, we construct the familyof Paley triple arrays by this method. In mathematical physics we work with solitons, which in nature can be seen asself-reinforcing waves acting like particles, and in mathematics as solutions of certainnon-linear differential equations. In Paper IV we study the non-commutativeversion of the two-dimensional Toda lattice for which we construct a family ofsolutions, and derive explicit solution formulas.

Abstract:
Agriculture when only focused on production leads to an unsustainable use of inputs with negative consequences to the environment and human health. One consequence of the excessive use of fertilizers is the pollution of surface and underground water resources in agricultural eco-systems and their boundaries. The Brazilian Cerrado has been suffering the transformations of the intensive agriculture during the last decades. Due to the poor fertility of soils, in general very sandy and of low pH, the use of agricultural inputs is intensified and the nutrient downward transport by leaching becomes a serious problem in different regions. Information about the current use practices of fertilizer use in the Cerrado environment must be gathered for a healthy transition of this biome. Models based on physical and chemical processes are useful tools to simulate water and nutrient dynamics in agricultural systems, including the related losses due to adopted managements. They have the potential to evaluate different scenarios to predict outcomings of such practices. Among the available models for such processes, SWAP (Soil, Water, Atmosphere and Plant model) has been used under several agronomic conditions to describe hydrologic processes, and ANIMO (Nitrogen in Agriculture model) to simulate N cycling in agricultural systems. Our study presents an application of SWAP to adult perennial coffee crops along one productive cycle, with focus on deep drainage losses and irrigation management in a representative Brazilian Cerrado management system. The SWAP/ANIMO combination was used in this study to simulate N absorption by coffee plants and N leaching in the form NO3-N, as a result of an intensive fertilizer management practice. The ANIMO program was calibrated in relation to one N treatment, of 400 kg ha-1 year-1, and was evaluated with independent data of NO3-N in soil solution of another treatment of 800 kg ha-1 year-1. The yearly water balance (WB) obtained from SWAP was similar to that obtained through a sequential climatologic WB of Thornthwaite and Matter. However, the monthly deep drainage values obtained by SWAP as compared to the WB values presented differences with a determination coefficient of 0.77 in a linearization of the results. Irrigation scenarios with intervals of 3(IF3), 5(IF5), 10 (IF10) e 15 (IF15) days between water applications were simulated by SWAP and compared with the irrigation management practiced in the farm where the experiment was carried out. These simulations showed for longer intervals (IF15) drainage losses were smaller, water productivity higher, as well as relative productivity. Measurements of N absorption by plants obtained experimentally were similar to ANIMO simulations. Sensitivity analyses of the model showed that leaching and soil solution concentration of NO3-N are sensitive to soil pH and temperature of the decomposition processes. We conclude that the combination of SWAP with ANIMO was efficient for the description of the N cycle in a Cerrado soil-plant-atmosphere system

Abstract:
Although much research has examined employees’ experience of the work-family interface, its conceptualization has been rather problematic, ranging from work and family as mutually constraining through to mutually enriching and, more recently, to work-family balance (WFB). Building on Greenhaus and Allen’s (2011) conceptualization of WFB as comprising satisfaction and effectiveness components, I proposed and tested a model of he antecedents and outcomes of WFB. Based on work-family border theory, I hypothesised that family-supportive supervisor behaviours (FSSB) facilitate WFB and hat the relationship is stronger when the organisation also offers formal support (availability of family-friendly practices (FFPs); enhancement effect). Furthermore, I integrated the leadership and work-family interface literatures by proposing authentic eadership as an antecedent of FSSB. Based on role accumulation theories, I proposed life satisfaction and health as outcomes of WFB satisfaction and WFB effectiveness and job performance as an outcome of only WFB effectiveness. I tested my hypotheses with individual-level data in Study 1 (two waves of data; employees from Germany and the UK) and nested data (individuals nested in teams; two waves of data; employee and supervisor ratings; Germany and the UK) in Study 2. The obtained findings largely supported the hypothesized model and showed that both authentic leadership (Study 1) and team authentic leadership (Study 2) predicted FSSB which, in turn, increased WFB satisfaction and WFB effectiveness. Contrary to my prediction, both studies revealed that FSSB and (team) availability of FFPs compensated for each other, only impacting WFB satisfaction/effectiveness if the other form of family support was not available. Furthermore, both components were positively related to life satisfaction and health, while WFB effectiveness was only related to self-rated performance (Study 1) and not supervisor-rated performance (Study 2). Lastly, the serial moderated mediation model hat tested the conditional indirect effect of (team) authentic leadership on the outcomes received mixed support.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the work-life balance experiences of Black females school leaders. Due to the inherent intersectionality of race and gender that is experienced by Black females, a study of their unique experiences with work-life balance is valuable to the field of educational leadership. The responsibilities associated with school leadership positions are extensive and those school leaders who also have spouses and children must figure out a way to fulfill responsibilities associated with each role. Work-life balance is important to understand for school leaders whose career responsibilities may interact with those associated with their personal lives. The theoretical framework, Black Feminist Thought, guided the data collection and analysis processes, and provided the basis for the resulting narrative findings. This study gave voice to an otherwise silenced, marginalized group, Black female school leaders. All data was synthesized into narratives and from these narratives came six themes: (1) Familial Sacrifice; (2) Servant Leadership; (3) Informal and Formal Work-life Balance Policies; (4) Notion of Self-Care; (5) Upbringing and Black Females’ Prideful Identity; and (6) Black Females having to prove themselves. While this study does not show evidence of school leaders having achieves work-life balance, the findings will inform the practices of perspective Black female school leaders and add the voices of Black female school leaders to the literature on Black female school leader’s experiences with work-life balance.

Abstract:
Background Fall-related  injuries may have huge and enduring impact on older people, resulting in chronic pain, disabled mobility and reducing the quality of life. Fall injuries is becoming a worldwide problem among older people and as a result, the measurement of balance ability for older people is of great importance. In this master thesis, a system used to measure balance ability will be introduced. The system allows participants to perform a series of balance tasks with the help of Wii balance board (WBB) which is a low-cost, commercial gamming instrument. Previous work has showed the possibility and reliability of using WBB to measure the balance ability for older people. Methods Mean sway velocity (MSV) is used to measure the tandem stance test.  Five-Repetition Sit-to-Stand (STS) test is measured by STS time. Since the system has high requirements on the input validity, input validation is also a main part of this thesis. Matlab is used to check the output validity of the program. Results For the tandem stance test, our results (mean = 7.87) are much larger than the results from previous work (mean = 4.27). The results indicate that experimental factors such as standing posture and testing time have great impact on the average MSV results for tandem stance test. For the five-repetition Sit-to-Stand test, our young participant did 9.97 seconds on average which is close to previous work (8.2 for average young people without balance disorders) The results from output validation test for tandem stance show that the correctness of the program is highly reliable. Conclusions We found standing postures and testing time is very sensitive to MSV. To conduct a tandem stance test, the hardware should also be considered to be one of the main factors that affects MSV. Testing results again indicate STS time is a good measurement for STS test. In our input validation test for tandem stance, we also found an effective and sensitive interval for the arguments which can be considered to be a good discriminator to distinguish between valid and invalid inputs.

Cass, Allan Brian. "Preliminary Specifications for an Exoskeleton for the Training of Balance in Balance Impaired Individuals." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34923.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a small but growing population of people who suffer from impaired balance. The causes range from old age to stroke to cerebral palsy. For those with only minor problems staying upright, a cane or walker is all that is needed. For some it is so debilitating that they are confined to a wheel chair. The precise cause of impairment can vary. In some, the vestibular, proprioceptive or visual impairments affect balance. In others, muscle weakness or brain damage is the cause. In another group, the brain never learned to balance in the first place. Relearning how to balance can be a struggle requiring months of costly physical therapy with a physical therapist. A machine that could help teach them how to balance would be a great help in the improvement of their lives. This thesis presents a set of control models for an exoskeleton that will stabilize and restore stability to those with impaired balance. The control models are designed for an exoskeleton to initially force the wearer into a known profile for balancing and moving. There will then be a steady reduction in the authority of the exoskeleton over time, requiring the patient to assert more control over his or her own movement. As the authority of the exoskeleton is reduced, the patient will have to increase his or her own authority and develop his or her own control law or the patient will become less stable and eventually unbalanced. We expect this treatment method will increase the stability of patients, allowing them to steadily adapt to standing and walking. This will then allow them mobility without the use of a wheel chair and decrease their risk of falling. Further, the use of this device will enable the patients to receive therapy at home and in their normal life without the need to visit a physical therapist for rehabilitation, enabling the patients to receive therapy at home and for a longer period of time than they currently do.

Abstract:
Postural stability assessment tools are one of the many ways concussions can be assessed and return to play decisions can be made; two of which are the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) and force plate technology. OBJECTIVE: Validate the modified BESS used by Utah State University by comparing it to equivalent tests on the NeuroCom Balance Manager System. METHODS: 114 current or previous Utah State football players ranging in age from 18-24. Each athlete conducted a baseline BESS test during their pre-participation physical and NeuroCom testing was conducted during the summer of 2011. NeuroCom testing included a modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (mCTSIB) both on a firm and foam surface, a single leg stance test with eyes open and closed on both a firm and foam surface, and a tandem walk test where end sway was recorded. BESS testing was done depending on when the athlete arrived at Utah State. Correlations were reported for athletes that arrived for the current year and also for the athletes that arrived for any year prior to that. A Welch's T-Test was conducted to analyze any differences between the two groups. The tandem stance on the foam condition for the BESS had a statistically significant difference, so that variable was excluded and the adjusted correlations were then reported. There were eight correlation conditions that were determined by the individuals who could and could not complete the entire time on the single leg stance with eyes closed on a firm as well as a foam surface. RESULTS: The only variable associated with the NeuroCom Balance Manager that had consistent correlations with the composite BESS score was the CTSIB foam condition; with a 0.28 correlation with individuals regardless of single leg stance with eyes closed, 0.39 with individuals who completed the whole time on the firm without consideration for the foam, 0.27 with individuals who did not complete the whole time on the foam without consideration for the firm and 0.39 with individuals who could complete the whole time on the firm but not on the foam. CONCLUSION: There appears to be some correlation with CTSIB foam conditions and the composite BESS.

Abstract:
Previous research suggests that to have a good relationship between work and private life it is important to experience a-good mental health and success at work. The industrial managers’ in this study were undergoing a major change at their workplace and this study found examined how five male managers’ perception of their work-life balance. One of the aims of this study was to examine how the managers’ roles at home affects work-life balance (WLB), to what degree support at home affects WLB, and the impact that a balance or a conflict could have. The study was conducted qualitatively with a semi-structured interview guide and every manager was affected by the change at the workplace. The results showed that some of the managers were experiencing work-life conflicts where others were on the other hand experiencing a good WLB. The most common reason for feeling conflict between work-life was the uneven amount of workload, which occurred to a greater extent due to the change. These periods of uneven workload caused the managers to feel less control. One of the things that caused the managers to feel frustration is that they had limited resources and authority to handle the demands at work. The situation at home also had a very big impact on whether the managers’ experienced a good WLB or not.

As live streaming of video games has become easier, electronic sports have grown quickly and they are still increasing as tournaments grow in viewers and prizes. The purpose of this paper is to examine the theory Metagame Bounds by applying it to League of Legends and Dota 2, to see if it is a valid way of looking at character balance in the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game genre. The main mode of both games consist of matches played on a map where a team of five players is up against another team of five players. Characters in the games generally have four abilities and a number of attributes, making them complex to compare without context. We gathered character data from websites and entered the data into a file that we used with the Metagame Bounds application. We compared the graphs that the data yielded with how often a character wins and how often it is played. To examine whether the characters were balanced we also played the games and analysed the characters in depth. All statistical data gathered was retrieved over the span of a few hours on the 21st of April 2015 from the websites Champion.gg for League of Legends and Dotabuff for Dota 2. Sirlin’s (2001) definition of multiplayer game balance is “A multiplayer game is balanced if a reasonably large number of options available to the player are viable – especially, but not limited to, during high-level play by expert players.” and with the data we see that these games are balanced in terms of characters according to that definition. Overall we believe that Metagame Bounds is a valid way of looking at balance within the genre, but the data is not completely reliable on its own and should be compared with other statistics.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to develop and understand dance balance characteristics on various kinds of dance, related positions and shoe types which contribute to dance performance and to understand different balance controls in various groups. The first study was conducted to examine balance into ballet 2nd position between Ballet shoes and Pointe shoes. Eight dancers performed five different conditions in ballet 2nd position (Ballet Flat, Ballet Demi, Pointe Flat, Pointe Demi, and Pointe Toe) and Centre of Pressure (COP) was used to assess balance. The second study was testing balance control and response to perturbations whilst standing on double leg stance dance positions using a moving platform. Four dance positions were performed by eight subjects (Normal Flat, Turnout Flat, Normal Demi and Turnout Demi) and the platform was moved in two different directions (Forward and Backward) at two different speeds (slow and fast). Kinetics, Kinematics and EMG data was taken from this study. The third study was taken to compare balance control and response to perturbations in single leg standing dance positions between eight dancers and eight gymnasts. The subjects performed static single leg balance in Normal Flat, Turnout Flat, Normal Demi and Turnout Demi. Also, perturbed stance trials were collected in anterior, posterior, right and left directions for two dance positions (Normal Flat and Turnout Flat) at two different speeds (slow and fast) on the moving platform. The results from the studies indicate that dancers move in Medial - Lateral direction more than in Anterior - Posterior direction on Demi-pointe and Toe standing by performing plantar flexion during ballet 2nd position. Demi-pointe position may cause longer delay of EMG latencies because CNS is probably sending information already to keep correcting balance on Demi-pointe. Dancers and Gymnasts have different balance controls due to their ways of training in their performance. Dancers generally reacted faster with slow perturbation in Turnout stance than Gymnasts because this is the particular condition which Dancers are training in.

Abstract:
Simulation has become a very useful tool to predict the characteristics of a system and perform analysis of parameters without having to run too many tests. The advanced system engineering team of Continental Automotive uses a 0D simulation program, AMESim, to realize simulations of vehicle models. These simulations are used e.g. to predict the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. A tool has been developed over the course of previous internships to realize the energy balance of AMESim vehicle models, which goal is to check the consistency of the models (no creation or loss of energy) and simplify their analysis. In this thesis, this tool has been further improved and developed through a comprehensive analysis. The computations have been checked and corrected to fit best with the AMESim results and obtain a consistent energy balance. The program has been adapted to hybrid vehicles and combustion losses computations were introduced. The program is coded in Matlab for the computations and in HMTL and JavaScript for the display. After the program was validated, it was used to realize a study on CO2 emissions. Three vehicle models were used. The influence of some parameters on the CO2 emissions was analyzed: the mass, aerodynamic resistance, rolling resistance, frictions and electric load. The aim of the study was to assess which parameters had the most influence on the CO2 emissions reduction in the perspective of the 95 g/km goal by 2020 set by the European Union. It was shown that the parameters have different effects on the vehicles CO2 emissions and that this effect varied from one vehicle to another. Substantial CO2 reduction can be achieved by improving some parameters, which makes it possible for the diesel vehicles to reach the 95 g/km in 2020 target set by the European Union. However, to achieve this goal with gasoline vehicles, the resort to hybridization will probably be needed. To assess the possible benefits of hybridization, a fourth vehicle model featuring mild hybridization was used. However, the decrease of CO2 emissions enabled by this type of hybrid vehicle would still not be sufficient to meet the 95 g/km target with gasoline vehicles.

Abstract:
Obesity, through a persistent positive energy and fat balance is of major public health significance due to its detrimental health, social and financial costs. Increasing physical activity levels through recreational exercise and decreasing energy intake have been implicated with obesity prevention. However, the addition of exercise to normally sedentary routines will only prevent positive energy balance if it is not tracked b a compensatory response in energy intake and non-exercise physical activity [also termed non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)]. The current series of studies set out to examine the quantitative and temporal relationship between exercise and energy balance with specific reference to appetite, energy intake and NEAT. These studies were designed using similar methodologies that could be compared and related to existing studies. The results showed that in younger motivated individuals, moderate-high intensity mandatory exercise increased daily energy expenditure leading to a marked negative energy balance. However for periods of up to two weeks, analysis of temporal trends revealed evidence of compensatory changes to re-establish energy balance (re-equilibrium phase). This re-equilibrium was a result of not only increases in energy intake, but also (and to a greater extent) decreases in NEAT. Inter-individual variability in the extent of compensation was evident and independent of age, sex, BMI and restraint status. Decreases in physical activity did not lead to a compensatory reduction in energy intake and lead to a marked positive energy balance. Using an exercise intervention, in line with government guidelines, in a group venerable to becoming obese showed that body mass was largely unaffected since overall energy expenditure was not significantly elevated, primarily due to a lack of motivation to reach the required exercise prescription. The results have public health significance in the formation of policy to increase physical activity in the population.

Abstract:
The maintain of muscle mass is closely controlled by protein synthesis and degradation balance. Physical activity and mainly resistance exercise is a powerful stimulus to positive muscle protein balance. To understand how protein balance is regulated after exercise, cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to muscular hypertrophy and/or atrophy have to be elucidated. Our works point out that FDP muscular hypertrophy after 10 weeks of resistance training in rat is partly due to the chronically activation of IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway, occurring in the activated satellite cell pool, after each single exercise bout. Once activated and engaged in the myogenic program, cells in which STAT1/STAT3 signaling pathway is activated, could downregulate MyoD and return to a quiescent state, leading to increase satellite cell reserve's pool. These events participate to enhance protein synthesis by the incorporation of new genetic material into muscle fiber leading to increase their cross sectional area and phenotypic shift after training. As resistance exercise increases proteolysis, our works attempt to characterize the proteolysis systems (lysosomal-autophagic, ubiquitin-proteasome) involved in protein balance after exercise. The molecular markers measured ( chymotrypsin-like and cathepsin L activities, protein and gene expressions of LC3B, E3 ligases…) could not explain the +30% of proteolysis obtained one hour after resistance eccentric contractions on EDL muscle of starved rats. Further studies based on calpains, caspases and metalloproteinase activities and/or expressions should bring us valuable information

This work presents a view of balance useful for mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers often need to make quick intelligent decisions using conceptual and physical understanding. The typical mechanical engineering instruction usually provides a good basis for "back of the envelope" calculations, especially for mechanical systems; however, one exception to this case is in the field of dynamics and control. Dynamics and control is generally taught with much math, modelling most systems with differential equations. Although math is useful for designing control systems, when designing products for people who act as sophisticated controllers the engineer needs a more general understanding of balance. This work presents a conceptual intuitive way to break the act of balance into distinct mechanisms and thereby quickly evaluate how a system balances.
