Full textTime has become a daily concern for adults and the possibilities of what to do with it –if the day had more hours– are an unreachable dream. The hurried lifestyle that comes with having a daily routine between work, studies and home, leaves the human being in an endless loop of events that only make them more stressed. So how do we transform those lives that normally are reactive to change? The path to self-knowledge and personal balance is only possible through movement, relaxation and mindful eating. Nowadays, the companies in our country that offer options to lead a healthy and active life, focus on traditional activities located in a establishment with standard exercises. This research aims to discover the preferences of a training that integrates the physical, mental and mindful eating area from an online platform so that users can access the workshops wherever they are and whenever they want. For this purpose, it was designed a mixed methodology, through the quantitative technique (survey and MVP) and qualitative (semi-structured interview) to an audience of Lima residents between 25 and 35 years old, in order to validate the viability of the project. The results showed that the project responds to the demand of the proposed digital workshops; but it also leaves us the constant challenge of adding other workshops according to the tren and preference in order to the same philosophy of the project

Full textObesity affects balance control. There are two possible contributing factors to this reduced balance control: biomechanical and sensory. The increased mass, that is centrally located on the abdomen, causes an increased gravitational torque about the ankle joint. This increased ankle torque requires greater muscular strength and this introduces greater variability into the control system and results in larger body oscillations. The second component that has not yet been identified is suggested to result from the effects that an increased in body mass has on the plantar sole mechanoreceptors. These mechanoreceptors participate in body sway awareness and it is thought that the additional mass of the body may alter the sensitivity of these mechanoreceptors and reduce the quality of the feedback afferent signal and this may then lead to larger body sway. This thesis explores both of these hypotheses. In order to observe how muscular strength affects the mechanical contributions towards quiet standing we performed two separate projects. The first project evaluated how weight loss affected muscular strength and standing balance control. The second project involved measuring balance control in a group of athletic individuals who were well trained but had a body mass index (BMI) similar to obese individuals. Together, both projects demonstrated that balance control is not significantly associated by quadriceps maximal voluntary contraction strength in the obese population during normal quiet standing. In a third project, we evaluated whether obesity affects balance control in elderly females. To single out the role of obesity, balance control of normal weight elderly women was compared to that of obese elderly women. We found that obesity contributes to reduced balance control in elderly individuals. This has important implications as a falls risk factor in this population. We also performed two projects investigating the sensory contributions to reduced balance control. The first project involved cooling the plantar sole and measuring balance control. A short term effect of reduced balance control was found. This demonstrates that reducing the sensation of the plantar sole affects standing balance control. The final project in this thesis measured the effects of two things on plantar sole sensitivity; the effects of adding a short term mass to the body and the position of the center of pressure relative to a point of stimulation. In conditions with increased pressure on the plantar sole we found reduced sensitivity in the plantar sole. This has implications for explaining the reduced balance control in obesity. In conclusion, this thesis explores biomechanical and sensory contributions to standing balance control.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania residents are proud of their agricultural heritage. They do not want to see their farmland disappear. But the County continues to be developed into residential subdivisions. This thesis explores the inconsistency in the perspectives and actions of residents regarding farmland preservation and development. Contrary to what you might expect, those in the County who want to preserve farmland and those who are developing the land are often the same people. Individuals talk about the importance of saving farmland, even though they just bought a home that was built on what was an active farm. Farmers, who have a deep connection with the County's land and know its importance, choose to develop their farms. It's not a complete mystery as to why this is happening, but it is a wonder how these individuals deal with their personal inconsistencies. How do such individuals confront the inconsistencies that they face? Furthermore, how do they justify their actions regarding the development of farmland? How do these groups of people as individuals see themselves in relation to the conflict between farmland preservation and development? Are they simply ambivalent?
(cont.) In an attempt to find out, I interviewed Lancaster County residents in two locations in the County where a farm had been developed into their single family homes. The farmer owners/developers were interviewed as well. The interviewees respond in numerous ways, but they all expressed a desire for balance. They support farmland preservation efforts, but they also believe that growth is necessary. This "balance" is how they expressed their ambivalence towards the subject. The interviews showed specific ways that information can enlighten the balance between development and farmland preservation. The County government is encouraged to take on the provision of information as a tool of intervention in this area. An informed public can then make better choices as to what the "balance" will look like. Local governments are responsible for implementing this balance by using zoning to control and direct development away from the County's agricultural land. Coordinated action in the County is required to avoid the County's farming character tragically disappearing.

Full textPrevious research suggests that to have a good relationship between work and private life it is important to experience a-good mental health and success at work. The industrial managers’ in this study were undergoing a major change at their workplace and this study found examined how five male managers’ perception of their work-life balance. One of the aims of this study was to examine how the managers’ roles at home affects work-life balance (WLB), to what degree support at home affects WLB, and the impact that a balance or a conflict could have. The study was conducted qualitatively with a semi-structured interview guide and every manager was affected by the change at the workplace. The results showed that some of the managers were experiencing work-life conflicts where others were on the other hand experiencing a good WLB. The most common reason for feeling conflict between work-life was the uneven amount of workload, which occurred to a greater extent due to the change. These periods of uneven workload caused the managers to feel less control. One of the things that caused the managers to feel frustration is that they had limited resources and authority to handle the demands at work. The situation at home also had a very big impact on whether the managers’ experienced a good WLB or not.

Full textThe maintain of muscle mass is closely controlled by protein synthesis and degradation balance. Physical activity and mainly resistance exercise is a powerful stimulus to positive muscle protein balance. To understand how protein balance is regulated after exercise, cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to muscular hypertrophy and/or atrophy have to be elucidated. Our works point out that FDP muscular hypertrophy after 10 weeks of resistance training in rat is partly due to the chronically activation of IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway, occurring in the activated satellite cell pool, after each single exercise bout. Once activated and engaged in the myogenic program, cells in which STAT1/STAT3 signaling pathway is activated, could downregulate MyoD and return to a quiescent state, leading to increase satellite cell reserve's pool. These events participate to enhance protein synthesis by the incorporation of new genetic material into muscle fiber leading to increase their cross sectional area and phenotypic shift after training. As resistance exercise increases proteolysis, our works attempt to characterize the proteolysis systems (lysosomal-autophagic, ubiquitin-proteasome) involved in protein balance after exercise. The molecular markers measured ( chymotrypsin-like and cathepsin L activities, protein and gene expressions of LC3B, E3 ligases…) could not explain the +30% of proteolysis obtained one hour after resistance eccentric contractions on EDL muscle of starved rats. This work presents a view of balance useful for mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers often need to make quick intelligent decisions using conceptual and physical understanding. The typical mechanical engineering instruction usually provides a good basis for "back of the envelope" calculations, especially for mechanical systems; however, one exception to this case is in the field of dynamics and control. Dynamics and control is generally taught with much math, modelling most systems with differential equations. Although math is useful for designing control systems, when designing products for people who act as sophisticated controllers the engineer needs a more general understanding of balance. This work presents a conceptual intuitive way to break the act of balance into distinct mechanisms and thereby quickly evaluate how a system balances.
