Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of the War Powers Resolution of 1973 and the impact it held on the role of Congress and the President in entering war. More specifically, this thesis takes a look at President Richard M. Nixon’s influence on the 93rd Congress’s decision to pass the War Powers Resolution after multiple failed attempts at similar legislation. Through a major domestic policy blunder, the Watergate break-in, and a foreign policy disaster, the on-going war in Vietnam, opposition to Nixon’s presidential conduct united both the House and the Senate and resulted in legislation that would attempt to restore the Constitutional balance of power.

Abstract:
The Balance of Power is one of the foundational concepts for the academic discipline of International Relations. Most treat it as a theoretical or analytical concept – a tool that scholars use to investigate the workings of world politics. However, there is a gap in the literature on the balance of power; it is also a concept used by political practitioners and diplomats in concrete debates and disputes throughout centuries. No one has systematically investigated the concept as a ‘category of practice’, and I seek to redress this omission. I ask, how, why, and with what effects has the balance of power concept been deployed across different contexts? This is important, because the discipline needs to investigate the histories of its dominant concepts – the balance of power deserves attention as an object of analysis in its own right. I combine a genealogical reading (by what accidents of history did we end up here?) with conceptual history (how was the balance used then as a rhetorical resource in making arguments?). The result is a history of practical international thought. I trace the trajectory of the balance of power concept empirically and concretely – from its emergence in England based on a domestic republican tradition, to its elaboration at the British-founded University of Göttingen in Hanover, on to Prussia and Germany, before finally ending up in the USA with the emergence of IR as a discipline. Throughout this trajectory, the concept of the balance of power has been centrally linked to what historical actors took to be European polities and their relations. In this trajectory, ‘shifts’ in the balance of power, is governed more by how the concept itself is deployed, than any material or territorial assessment of power alone, or by any deliberate refinement of the concept. It has affected and constituted international politics and foreign policies across time, as well as our own discipline of IR.

This dissertation aims at offering a history of the concept balance of power. Drawing on the Begriffsgeschichte, I will try to understand how a given space of experience and a given horizon of expectations have been constituted through this concept. The argument is divided into two parts. In the first part the aim is to understand how the concept emerged out of the collapse of the Medieval order. It is possible to identify in this period what will be called an anti-imperial corollary. This very axiological dimension needs to be contemplated as a reference to the appearance of this term in the political lexicon. In the second part the fixation of the concept in the current international language will be examined. An element that brought about this process and that will be analysed was the presence of a commercial sociability as part of the political realm. Furthermore, the fixation is related to a conservative corollary which elicits a specific conception of the functioning of international politics. Last but not least, the chapters in this part will present a discussion of the temporal dimension of balance of power with special attention to the claim that this concept works as an ontological regulator of history. From the temporal point of view, the argument of this dissertation deals with a period that goes from the 13th to the 19th century.

This thesis describes the use of the power balance method for performance estimation of aircraft configurations. In this method, mechanical power production and mechanical power consumption of the aircraft are balanced, rather than forces as in the conventional thrust and drag approach to aircraft performance estimation. It is shown that an approach based on mechanical power provides a substantial advantage in accuracy and a wider range of applicability for integrated configurations such as boundary layer ingesting (BLI) aircraft. The thesis provides evidence of the major benefits of the power balance method, and descriptions of its limitations, for three applications: 1) derivation of an analytic expression of profile drag estimates for conceptual design applications, 2) aerodynamic performance estimation for three canonical integrated configurations, and 3) performance quantification of a hybrid wing body (HWB) with BLI propulsion system. In the first application, an analytical expression for the form factor used in the wetted area method (a profile drag correlation employed in conceptual design, which is heavily based on empiricism) is derived from the power balance method. The developed estimation method uses only potential-flow surface velocities, and it can be applied to new geometries for which experimental drag data is not available. The accuracy of this analytical expression and its limitations are presented in terms of quantitative results and analysis of physical effects for two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries in incompressible and transonic flows. In the second application, the mechanical energy loss is evaluated for three integrated configurations: a fuselage with a propelling fan at the rear, a nacelle-fan combination, and two interfering airfoils. Using the boundary layer mechanical energy equation, it is shown that the profile mechanical loss from potential field (pressure) interference scales according to ... The scaling is confirmed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations. The scaling is accurate to within 10% for configurations for which the average boundary layer kinematic shape parameter increases by no more than 0.04 from non-interfering to interfering configuration. The physical mechanisms responsible for the breakdown in accuracy are analyzed. The power balance method is also applied to a system-level optimization of fuel burn for an HWB with BLI propulsion system. The fuel burn of the HWB is shown to decrease monotonically with increasing BLI, lip to a maximuim fuel burn improvement of 11 % compared to a non-BLI aircraft.

Abstract:
The main objective of the thesis is the reliability increase of high voltage (600 V) power MOSFETS based in the Super Junction concept when they are submitted to the most extreme conditions in DC/DC converters and Factor Power Correction circuits and the intrinsic body diode has to handle a big amount of energy in a very short period of time. The research has been carried out in the framework of a collaboration between Institut de Microelectrònica de Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC) and ON Semiconductor (Oudenaarde, Bèlgica). The process technology of the new Super Junction power MOSFET transistors designed in ON Semiconductor (named UltiMOS) has been optimized with the aim of robustness enhancement, which has to be totally independent of the charge balance in the device. The transistors are destined to 400 V line applications that require a voltage capability above 600 V and a minimal on-state resistance to operate at high frequency. The thesis starts with an introduction to the state of the art of Super Junction transistors, including a description of the different process technologies used in the commercial counterparts. Afterwards, the most relevant electrical and technological parameters are introduced and linked to the electrical characterization of the UltiMOS transistor. The research is centered in the study of the physics involved in the failure mechanisms combining TCAD simulations and experimental measurements, from where it is concluded that a technological solution to increase the energy capability of UltiMOS transistors is needed, with a wide CB manufacturability window. Different devices derived from the UltiMOS structure (conventional UMOS transistor, SJ Diodes and SJ Bipolar transistors) were fabricated in the ON Semiconductor’s Clean Room and tested under the same avalanche conditions as UltiMOS transistors. All the results derived from complementary techniques (Unclamped Inductive Switching, Emission Microscopy, Thermal Infrared Thermography, Transmission Line Pulse, Transient Interferometric Mapping, etc.) lead to the same conclusion: the current is focalized at a certain region of the UltiMOS transistor, enhancing the activation of the parasitic bipolar transistor. Two approaches are proposed to increase the energy capability of UltiMOS transistors and, once its efficiency has been demonstrated, they have been included on the process technology of the device designed to go into production.

Hamilton, Stephanie E. "The influence of passive ankle joint power on balance recovery." Thesis, Michigan Technological University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3724620.

Abstract:

Over one–third of Americans over the age of 65 fall each year, costing more than $19 billion in health care costs in 2000. Many adults 65+ who have not experienced a fall still fear falling, and fear can decrease quality of life and increase the likelihood of falls. Several factors such as muscle strength, power, stiffness and tendon properties change in the human body with age affecting balance, which has been tagged as a fall risk predictor. Additionally, balance recovery strategies also differ between young and older adults, with young adults primarily utilizing their ankle joint and older adults utilizing their hip. The role of passive ankle joint power in balance recovery is unknown. Therefore, we conducted three studies. In Study 1, we investigated the role of passive ankle joint power in balance recovery of young subjects and tested if the contribution of passive power to net ankle joint power changed with perturbation speed. In Study 2, we explored the factor of age in the contribution of passive ankle joint power to net ankle joint power. In Study 3, we searched for a link between the contribution of passive ankle joint power to net ankle joint power and balance recovery strategy. Passive joint torque through the full range of motion was collected for each subject. Each subject performed 5 stepping tasks at two speeds, fast and slow. Joint kinematics and kinetics were collected for each trial. Inverse dynamics were performed and net ankle joint torque and net ankle joint work were computed. Passive ankle joint torque models were optimized for each subject, and passive ankle joint powers were determined. In Study 1, there appeared to be no difference in net or passive joint powers with respect to perturbation speed. In Study 2, age affected net ankle joint powers and passive uniarticular plantar- and dorsiflexor powers. In Study 3, we noted a change in balance recovery strategy between young and older adults. We were unable to predict balance recovery strategy index based off of the percent contribution of passive ankle joint work to net ankle joint work. These studies bring greater clarity to the role of passive ankle joint power with respect to balance recovery.

Abstract:

Using historical case studies I demonstrate that in the post-1494 European states-system, alliances could be formed to address the problem created by the presence of a potential hegemon only if there was a great power to coordinate and finance opposition to the challenger. This state's undertakings, as coordinator and financier, played a necessary but not sufficient role providing the means needed to address the collective action problem which, most of the times, interfered with the formation of an alliance. Not all states can fulfill the function of systemic coordinator. Only a great power with high levels of wealth and security, with spare resources to spend on allies, and with its political elite sharing the same foreign policy's goal--to contain or defeat the challenger--can be a coordinating state. It was only when there was an active coordinator in the European system that alliances were formed to deal with the destabilizing presence of a systemic challenger. Yet, the mere presence of an alliance never guaranteed that the challenger would not win. It was only when there was a coordinator with the capacity to provide directly and indirectly high amounts of additional-military-capacity that the alliance was successful. The amount of additional-military-capacity available is the result of the interaction of two independent variables, the amount of spare resources used by the leader of the coordinating state, and this leader's level of skills. The two-step model I build goes against the deterministic element located at the heart of the balance of power theory. Alliances were not necessarily formed and victorious as the theory states. It was the presence of a coordinator which made this double outcome possible. With the addition of the coordinator model, the balance of power theory becomes a powerful analytical tool at the disposal of IR specialists and statesmen.

Electric propulsion systems provide an attractive option for various spacecraft propulsion applications due to their high specific impulse. The power balance of an electric thruster based on a helicon plasma source is presented. The power balance is shown to be comprised of several variables, including the RF power supplied to the system, dissipative losses in transmission hardware, losses in the neutral confinement tube, uncoupled RF radiation, ionization power, and plume output power. A thermal model for the neutral confinement tube is presented whereby heat flux may be derived from thermal response data. Numerical simulation and experimental benchmarking are employed to validate this thermal model. A mapping of power consumption is presented. Comparison with experimental parameters indicates that 97% of the power supplied to the system is accounted for, suggesting that primary loss mechanisms have been identified. Avenues for improving the performance of the thruster, based on these data, are presented.

Electrical and Computer Engineering
Ph.D.
Power networks are one of the most complex systems in the field of electrical and computer engineering. In power networks, power supply-demand balancing can be achieved in a static or a dynamic model. In a static model, the power network cannot be easily adapted to intentional or unintentional network topology changes because the network design is predetermined, whereas in a dynamic model, the power network can be dynamically constructed and reconfigured at run-time, which leads to a more nimble, flexible, and stable system. In this dissertation, a novel Market-based Multi-agent System (MMS) is proposed to solve supply-demand balancing and power restoration problems in a dynamic model. The power network is modeled as a market environment consisting of Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) agents representing three characters: 1) consumer, 2) supplier, and 3) middleman. The BDI agents are able to negotiate power supply and demand of the power network, with consumers exploring the market and exchanging power information with neighboring middlemen and suppliers. So long as all consumers and suppliers establish supply-demand relationships represented in tree data structures, a qualified minimal access structure is found as the lower bound of the system reliability. When contingencies occur, the agents can quickly respond and restore loads guided by the relationships using minimum computational resource. Based on case studies and simulation results, the proposed approach delivers more effective performance of contingencies response and better computation time efficiency as the scale of the power network expands. The proposed MMS shows promises for solving various real-world power supply-demand and restoration problems, and serves as a solid foundation for future power networks refinement and improvement.

Boyes, Haydn. "Sensitivity analysis of the secondary heat balance at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station." Master's thesis, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33686.

Full text
Abstract:
At Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the reactor thermal power limit is one of the most important quantities specified in the operating licence, which is issued to Eskom by the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). The reactor thermal power is measured using different methodologies, with the most important being the Secondary Heat Balance (SHB) test which has been programmed within the central Koeberg computer and data processing system (KIT). Improved accuracy in the SHB will result in a more accurate representation of the thermal power generated in the core. The input variables have a significant role to play in determining the accuracy of the measured power. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate the sensitivity of the SHB to the changes in all input variables that are important in the determination of the reactor power. The guidance provided by the Electric Power Research institute (EPRI) is used to determine the sensitivity. To aid with the analysis, the SHB test was duplicated using alternate software. Microsoft Excel VBA and Python were used. This allowed the inputs to be altered so that the sensitivity can be determined. The new inputs included the uncertainties and errors of the instrumentation and measurement systems. The results of these alternate programmes were compared with the official SHB programme. At any power station, thermal efficiency is essential to ensure that the power station can deliver the maximum output power while operating as efficiently as possible. Electricity utilities assign performance criteria to all their stations. At Koeberg, the thermal performance programme is developed to optimize the plant steam cycle performance and focusses on the turbine system. This thesis evaluates the thermal performance programme and turbine performance. The Primary Heat Balance (PHB) test also measures reactor power but uses instrumentation within the reactor core. Due to its location inside the reactor coolant system, the instrumentation used to calculate the PHB is subject to large temperature fluctuations and therefore has an impact on its reliability. To quantify the effects of these fluctuations, the sensitivity of the PHB was determined. The same principle, which was used for the SHB sensitivity analysis, was applied to the PHB. The impact of each instrument on the PHB test result was analysed using MS Excel. The use of the software could be useful in troubleshooting defects in the instrumentation. A sample of previously authorised tests and associated data were used in this thesis. The data for these tests are available from the Koeberg central computer and data processing system.

It is widely believed that the regional dynamics in South Asia, characterized by power-asymmetry and geographical Indo-centricity, make the region a particularly brittle strategic environment. In that challenging context, this study seeks to determine why regional integration, including the creation of an important role for SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation), has been so difficult in South Asia. The paper asserts that the power asymmetry between India and other South Asian countries has fueled an environment of regional discord, which has adversely affected regionalism in South Asia. The conflictual relationships, most prominent between India and Pakistan, have manifested in a regional mindset that is highly sensitive to state sovereignty and averse to the notion of relinquishing any degree of state sovereignty to a supra-national authority, which the European countries successfully accomplished. Such a mindset has made it difficult for South Asian countries to properly institutionalize the SAARC. The paper concludes that despite the setbacks, the prospects appear positive for regional integration in South Asia. But to achieve any meaningful traction in the integration process, the onus ultimately lies on SAARC members to change their attitudes vis-à-vis each other and soften their respective stances.

The growing evidence of Chinese government complicity in commercial cyber espionage and theft of intellectual property, costing the United States billions of dollars, has blurred the distinction between the geopolitical and economic realms, complicating an already complex relationship. Yet, China’s cyber activity takes place in the context of an extensive economic interdependence between the two countries that may be seen as a source of stability in the relationship. Taking into consideration the economic interdependence between the United States and China, the rise of China as a potential global power, and the threat of state-sponsored malicious cyber activity, the major question driving this thesis is: What does China’s cyber behavior tell us about the role of economic interdependence in U.S.-China relations? This thesis applies the complex interdependence framework to demonstrate that China has systematically conducted cyber-enabled economic espionage against the United States in an effort to shift the economic balance of power. Furthermore, this thesis shows China’s ability to use asymmetric interdependence as a source of power and instrument of political coercion and prove its willingness to use these instruments against the United States. Finally, this thesis reasons that if China continues its persistent cyber espionage campaign, it would indicate that the potential costs of its cyber programs outweigh the benefits of its relationship with the United States.

The 3rd Generation mobile telecommunications industry, which changes rapidly, is one of the best examples for the study of the balance of power in the value chain. Three dynamic factors are keys that can change the balance of power in the mobile operator's industry: sociopolitical factors, technological factors, and alliance factors. These factors collectively increase the bargaining power that mobile operators have over vendors. In addition they impact how vendors compete with each other. This thesis advances the discussion of power with an analysis of the Vodafone Group. It also explores the idea of how network suppliers respond to the increase in the bargaining power of buyers, through a discussion of Nokia. The focus of this thesis is not whether, but how the mobile telecommunications value chain, and specifically the bargaining power of buyers, has evolved thus far and will continue to evolve over the next few years.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the functional movement screen (FMS) and a battery of stabilization, balance, and athletic performance assessments, including time to stabilization (TTS), Davies test (DT), Y-Balance test (YBT), and maximum vertical jump (VJ). Sixty-one healthy individuals (32 males, 29 females; age: 22.4 ± 2.7 yr; height: 174.4 ± 10.4 cm, body mass: 74.0 ± 18.8 kg), successfully performed the FMS and the accompanying comparison tests. Correlations were generated between the FMS and TTS, DT, YBT, and VJ (including both unilateral and bilateral assessments) using the R Project for Statistical Computing, with statistical significance set at p < .001 to minimize alpha inflation. Weak correlations were generated between participants' total FMS score (summed from the 7 FMS assessments) and the TTS-left side (r = -.43; p < 0.001), TTS-right side (r = -.35; p<0.006), DT (r = .54; p < 0.0001), and VJ (r = .33; p = 0.101). Moderately strong correlations were generated between total FMS scores and the YBT-left side (r = .69; p < 0.0001) and YBT-right side (r = .70; p < 0.0001). Similar weak significant correlations were generated when comparing the scores of each individual FMS screen with the TTS, DT, YBT, and VJ. Of these, the highest correlations were between the in-line lunge-left side and the YBT-left side (r = .72; p ≤ 0. 001); the in-line lunge-left side and YBT-right side (r = .75; p ≤ 0.001); the trunk stability push-up and VJ (r = .60; p < 0.0001); and the active straight leg raise-left side and TTS-left side (r = -.46; p < 0.0001). In summary, mostly weak correlations were found between the FMS (involving total or individual scores) and the comparison assessments employed in this study. More rigorous investigations are now warranted to determine the causality of these relationships and how the FMS might be applied to activity of daily living, athletic performance, and injury prevention.

Forsyth, Jason Porter. "The balance of power : assessing conflict and collaboration in Aboriginal forest management." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32499.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between Aboriginal and Crown governments in regards to forest management in Canada is dynamic and challenging. This study describes this relationship in terms of the Aboriginal-Crown forest policy context, highlighting regional examples of Aboriginal forest management and developing a constructive framework for the analysis of the Aboriginal-Crown relationship. The forest policy context is set by providing a case study of British Columbia's attempt to overhaul forest policy in the face of political, judicial and Aboriginal rights and title pressures. This cases study provides insight into the complexities that exist within the Aboriginal-Crown relationship by utilizing a policy regime and policy cycle framework. Results of the case study highlight that Aboriginal governments must be consulted and given a rightful seat at the policy design table. Creation of exclusive provincial government-industry policy forums can lead to increased tensions between Aboriginal and Crown governments. Such tensions can result in judicial challenges by Aboriginal peoples and a distrustful environment surrounding the spirit and intent of new forest policy design. Examples of Aboriginal forest management from British Columbia and Labrador are then reviewed to explore the concept of Aboriginal forest tenure. Analysis of these examples finds that governance mechanisms, enabled by co-management agreements, are the driving factor behind significant changes to forest management regimes. A conceptual framework is then developed for determining the level of power-sharing in Aboriginal-Crown forest management arrangements. The framework is applied to the British Columbian Forest and Range Agreement policy initiative. Results suggest that little power-sharing exists at the strategic decision-making level, but enhanced powersharing does occur at the tactical and operational levels.

Abstract:
Balance-of-Power theory was tested by examining the 1977-1978 Ethiopian-Somali conflict and its outcome. The theory, according to Waltz (1979), claims to explain the international outcome arising from realpolitik or power politics, namely, the formation of balances of power. Given the close fit between the major developments leading to the eruption of conflict and the principal propositions of balance-of-power theory, the outcome of the conflict was expected to be consistent with that posited by the theory. This expectation was borne out by the study's finding which indicated that the conflict has produced a similar result. Confirmation of the theory was achieved by further subjecting the finding to the verification test established by Waltz.

Fergusson, James Gordon. "Balance of power theory reconsidered : the distribution of capabilities and alliances 1816-1939." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29098.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the European International system from 1816 to 1939, focusing on the relationship between the distribution of capabilities and alliances. Two distinct versions of Balance of Power theory are employed to test this relationship. The manual version posits a direct or positive relationship between an unequal distribution and the number of alliances in the system. The semi-automatic or balancer version posits the same relationship but limits its applicability to a single Great Power, Great Britain. The findings support the semi-automatic version and also indicate an inverse relationship between equality and alliances. Finally, an examination of the relationship between polarization, defined as the pattern of alliances in the system, and the distribution of capabilities is undertaken. No clear relationship is found between polarization and an unequal distribution, although some evidence points towards a relationship between po1arization and war. The analysis concludes by positing conflicting, if not contradictory, security demands and thus conflicting behavior for continental and insular Powers. This finding sheds some light on conflicting evidence in the quantitative literature on the relationship between the distribution of capabi1ities and war, and may provide an additional explanation for the level of hostility between the Soviet Union and the United States since World War II.

Abstract:
By using IT-solutions, the flexibility on the demand side in the electrical systems could be increased. This is called demand response and is part of the larger concept called smart grids. Previous work in this area has concerned the utilization of demand response by grid owners. In this thesis the focus will instead be shifted towards the electrical companies that have balance responsibility, and how they could use demand response in order to make profits. By investigating electrical appliances in hourly measured households, the business value from decreasing electrical companies’ power imbalances has been quantified. By an iterative simulation scheme an optimal value was found to be 977 SEK/year and appliance. It could however be shown that the value became larger for energy inefficient households, and that such consumers’ participation in a demand response market would be prioritized ahead of other measures like isolating walls is rather unlikely. Thermal appliance whose load depend on the outdoor temperature are less valuable for demand response during the summer months, and the annual value would increase if less seasonally dependent appliances were used. Additionally, by increasing the market price amplitudes and the imbalance price volatility, it could be shown that the potential for such demand response markets is larger in e.g. the Netherlands and Germany.

Jiao, Yang. "High Power High Frequency 3-level NPC Power Conversion System." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/56653.

Full text
Abstract:
The high penetration of renewable energy and the emerging concept of micro-grid system raises challenges to the high power conversion techniques. Multilevel converter plays the key role in such applications and is studied in detail in the dissertation. The topologies and modulation techniques for multilevel converter are categorized at first by a thorough literature survey. The pros and cons for various multilevel topologies and modulation techniques are discussed. The 3-level neutral point clamped (NPC) topology is selected to build a 200kVA, 20 kHz power conversion system. The modularized phase leg building block of the converter is carefully designed to achieve low loss and stress for high frequency and high power operation. The switching characteristics for all the commutation loops of 3-level phase leg are evaluated by double pulse tests. The switching performance is optimized for loss and stress tradeoff. A detailed loss model is built for system loss distribution and loss breakdown calculation. Loss and stress for the phase leg and 3-phase system are quantified at all power factors. The space vector modulation (SVM) for 3-level NPC converter is investigated to achieve loss reduction, neutral voltage balance and noise reduction. The loss model and simulation model provides a quantitative analysis for loss and neutral voltage ripple tradeoff. An improved SVM method is proposed to reduce NP imbalance and switching loss simultaneously. This method also ensures an evenly distributed device loss in each phase leg and gives a constant system efficiency under different power factors. Based on the improved modulation strategy, a new modulation scheme is then proposed with largely reduced conduction loss and switching stress. Moreover, the device loss and stress distribution on a phase leg is more even. This scheme also features on the simplified implementation. The improved switching characteristics for the proposed method are verified by double pulse tests. Also the system loss breakdown and the phase leg loss distribution analysis shows the loss reduction and redistribution result. The harmonic filter for the grid interface converter is designed with LCL topology. A detailed inductor current ripple analysis derives the maximum inductor current ripple and the ripple distribution in a line cycle. The inverter side inductor is designed with the optimum loss and size trade-off. The grid side inductor is designed based on grid code attenuation requirement. Different damping circuits for LCL filter are evaluated in detail. The filter design is verified by both simulation and hardware experiment. The average model for the 3-level NPC converter and its equivalent circuit is derived with the consideration of damping circuit in both ABC and d-q frame. The modeling and control loop design is verified by transfer function measurement on real hardware. The control loops design is also tested and verified on real hardware. The interleaved DC/DC chopper is introduced at last. The different interleaving methods and their current ripple are analyzed in detail with the coupled and non-coupled inductor. An integrated coupled inductor based on 3-dimentional core structure is proposed to achieve high power density and provide both CM and DM impedance for the inductor current and output current.

Abstract:
We study the problem of wave propagation in a parallel plate waveguide with an iris. We use Green's function techniques to model the field behavior inside the waveguide. We formulate an integral equation whose solution will allow us to solve for the fields everywhere within the guide. We solve the integral equation by employing both the method of moments and a low-frequency approximation. We next develop a power balance theorem which relates the modal coefficients of the propagating modes in an exact relation. From the numerical solution, we can generate numerical approximations to the modal coefficients. We investigate if and when our numerical approximations to the modal coefficients satisfy the power balance theorem. Finally, we derive a generalized power balance theorem for scattering by obstacles and junctions inside a waveguide of arbitrary, uniform cross-sectional area.

Cloak, Ross. "The chronic and acute effects of whole body vibration training." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/612201.

Abstract:
Whole body vibration training (WBVT) has gained a lot of interest for its proposed benefits across a range of populations both active and injured. The purpose of the present thesis was to test the efficacy of WBVT in terms of injury rehabilitation and performance enhancement amongst professional and amateur athletes. The five papers submitted for the degree of PhD by publication are grouped into two key themes relevant to the development of knowledge and evidence to advance a better understanding of the chronic and acute effects of WBVT. The themes encompass the efficacy of WBVT (Chronic) as a rehabilitation tool and as an addition to a warm-up routine (acute). The explanatory narrative provides a brief background to WBVT, a summary of each paper and what the paper has contributed to the field both in terms of knowledge and methodological development. The papers presented provide evidence that chronic WBVT is an effective method of improving balance and stability in athletes suffering functional ankle instability (FAI) (Paper 1). Even when compared to traditional methods of rehabilitation for FAI, the addition of WBVT enhances the benefits of traditional rehabilitation protocols (Paper 2). The use of acute WBVT enhances reactive strength, again showing a significant benefit as an addition to a more traditional warm-up (FIFA 11+) amongst amateur soccer players (Paper 3). When training status was considered (amateur vs. professional), high frequency acute WBVT stimulus significantly improved landing stability (DPSI) amongst professional players only (Paper 4). These differences between groups were also identified when examining knee extensor potentiation and force output with significant improvements amongst professional but not amateur soccer players. Professional players also reported significantly greater beliefs in the effectiveness of WBVT (Paper 5). In conclusion the body of work presented discusses the practical and methodological implications of the new knowledge presented and identifies a series of future lines of research.

Abstract:
This study addresses the mechanisms and consequences of shifts and transitions at the apex of the international hierarchy of power. It begins with the assessment that in spite of recent advances, progress in this area has been limited by lack of theoretical consistency and rigor. To remedy this problem, a game-theoretic model is developed which conceives of power shifts as transitions in preferences and learning processes. The model is then tested against the case of the pre-World War I British-German power shift. Findings provide new insight into the dynamics of prewar European diplomacy, and suggest that the war fundamentally resulted from a German challenge to the British-led international order. As regards the current Sino-American power shift, this study suggests that relations between China and the U.S. are headed towards a Cold War-like pattern, the severity of which could be alleviated by a successful U.S. policy of engagement towards Beijing.

Lombard, Alex. "Second-Strike Nuclear Forces and Neorealist Theory: Unit-Level Challenge or Balance-of-Power Politics as Usual?" Thesis, Department of Government and International Relations, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/2158.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: What are the implications of second-strike nuclear forces for neorealism? The end of the Cold War yielded a unipolar structure of international politics defined by the military, economic, and political preponderance of the United States. According to balance-of-power theory, which lies at the heart of neorealism, unipolarity has a short life span as secondary states waste little time in rectifying the global imbalance of power. Thus far, America remains unbalanced. Are we to take this as a refutation of balance-of-power theory? My thesis argues that second-strike arsenals render void the need to balance superior American military power. But because state survival is contingent not only upon military invulnerability (for which nuclear weapons are a sure guarantee), but also upon economic invulnerability (for which there is no absolute remedy), nuclear-weapon states are impelled to balance superior economic power for security reasons. By recasting balance-of-power theory in light of these assumptions, one can make sense of the great-power politics of the post-Cold War era.

Abstract:
This master thesis investigated how a hydrogen energy storage could be used anddimensioned to reduce the problem of power shortage in the local distributiongrid in Uppsala, Sweden. By implementing such a storage system in mobilityhouses, which are parking garages with integrated charging stations for electric vehicles and smart renewable energy solutions for power generation, the problem with power shortage could be decreased. The results showed that by integrating a hydrogen storage together with battery packs, it was possible to reduce power peaks in mobility houses. Further, it was clear that more power peaks facilitated the dimensioning of these type of systems. It was also shown that due to today's initial cost of hydrogen storages, the total savings related to a limited purchase of electricity from the grid were insignificant. It was therefore found that this type of hydrogen storage would not reduce costs in the short term for the mobility houses considered in this study. However, implementing a smaller kW storage could generate and improve knowledge in the hydrogen/hybrid field, which could facilitate the implementation of larger systems in the future. Furthermore, the results showed that it could be interesting to implement hydrogen storages on a bigger scale for municipalities or actors, who would want to reduce the power shortage in the local distribution grid.

Abstract:
Relations among China, the United States, and Japan constitute some of the most complicated and dynamic relations in the contemporary era. Since the end of the second half of the twentieth century, all three nations, which were not in favor of regional multilateralism, have changed their strategy and have actively engaged in regional Asia-Pacific institutions. This research attempts to integrate realist discourse on the balance of power and liberal analysis of institutions to look at the China–U.S.–Japan interactions within regional institutions. This study explores why China, the United States, and Japan have increased their cooperative interaction in regional institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, despite having divergent interests and different visions of the future regional power structure. By searching and analyzing archives documenting China–U.S.–Japan regional policies and policies directed at regional institutions and observing in detail China– U.S.–Japan interactions within Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), this dissertation argues that institutional balancing provides a framework that helps identify countries’ overlooked intention to check and balance targeted powers in regional institutions. Regional institutions not only provide an opportunity for participant countries to discover and address common interests but also provide an opportunity for participant countries to lobby for their own interests and to balance the gains and influences of the other powers. This dissertation explores conditions under which institutional balancing is an optimal choice for countries and notes key methods: controlling membership; shaping institutional norms, rules, and mechanisms; and pursuing balanced alliances that have been practiced by China, the United States, and Japan in regional institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Abstract:
The power balance between France and Germany in the European Union has been one of great discussion and debate. Countless journalists and scholars have argued that Germany’s power has risen gradually against the seemingly perpetually stronger France over the past sixty years, and is now finally set to surpass France; but how true are these claims? How can power within the EU truly be measured? Through an analysis of Franco-German collaboration through unionization, a critique of the contemporary discourse on the relationship, and an examination of changing contributions to the EU budget, my paper argues that the Franco-German power balance has never been truly equal, as Germany has continually been the largest source of economic power in the European Union since its creation.

Yang, Yuchen. "Transformer Shielding Technique for Common Mode Noise Reduction in Switch Mode Power Supplies." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/49263.

Full text
Abstract:
Switch mode power supplies are widely used in different applications. High efficiency and high power density are two driving forces for power supply systems. However, high dv/dt and di/dt in switch mode power supplies will cause severe EMI noise issue. In a typical front-end converter, the EMI filter usually occupies 1/3 to 1/4 volume of total converter. Hence, reducing the EMI noise of power converter can help reduce the volume of EMI filter and improving the total power density of the converter. For off-line switch mode power supplies, DM noise is dominated by PFC converter. CM noise is a more complicated issue. It is contributed by both PFC converter and DC/DC converter. While many researches have focused on reducing CM noise for PFC converter, the CM noise of DC/DC converter still remains a challenge. The main objective of this thesis is provide a solution to have best CM noise reduction for DC/DC converters. The shielding concept and balance concept are combined to propose a novel balance double shielding technique. This method can have an effective CM noise reduction in the circuit level. In addition it is easy to design and implement in the real production. The balance condition is easily controlled and guarantees effective CM noise reduction in mass production. Then, a novel one-layer shielding method for PCB winding transformer is provided. This shielding technique can block CM noise from primary side and also cancel the CM noise from secondary side. In addition, shielding does not increase the loss of converter too much. Furthermore, this shielding technique can be applied to matrix transformer structure. For matrix transformer LLC converter, the inter-winding capacitor is very large and will cause severe CM noise problem. By adding shielding layer, CM noise has been greatly reduced. In addition, by modifying the secondary winding, the loss on shielding layer is minimized and experiments show that the total efficiency of converter has almost no impact. Furthermore, although this thesis uses flyback and LLC resonant converter as example to demonstrate the concept, the novel shielding technique can also be applied to other topologies that have similar transformer structure.
