Abstract:
This chapter is an overview of central research-based perspectives that support teaching-learning for understanding and for fluency. We summarize the Class Learning Path Model that integrates two theoretical foci – a Piagetian focus on learning and a Vygotskiian focus on teaching – and specifies phases in learning that reflect Vygotsky’s assertion about the move from spontaneous to scientific concepts. Major aspects of the model were drawn from national research-based reports. This model connects understanding and fluency with a focus on mathematically important but also accessible methods in the middle and on maths drawings and other supports for understanding these methods. Such methods can be generated by students and can bridge from less-advanced student methods to formal methods that are unnecessarily complex. For three maths domains in Grades Kindergarten through Grade 6, we illustrate and discuss methods in the middle and drawings (diagrams) that support these methods: problem solving and especially the full range of word problem situations with each quantity the unknown; multidigit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; and ratio and proportion. Central features of the Common Core State Standards Mathematical Practices (CCSSO/NGA 2010) in these domains are identified, and how these can support understanding and fluency are briefly discussed. Further aspects of how the pedagogical supports help students move through the Class Learning Path in their own individual ways, and implications for research and for designing maths programmes are then discussed.

Abstract:
This online resource provides a striking balance of the rich history of the counseling specialty and a thorough articulation of the professional practice domains conducted by the counseling psychology specialist. It delivers informative examples of each foundational and functional domain of competency as well as a comprehensive discussion of the historic roots that support the specialty's leadership role in professional psychology. It successfully captures how counseling psychology interfaces and overlaps with the other psychology specialties, yet also distinguishes itself from them.

Khan, Bilal, Mitch Downey, Meredith Dank, and Kirk Dombrowski. A Method for Determining the Size of the Underground Cash Economy for Commercial Sex in Seven US Cities. Edited by Scott Cunningham and Manisha Shah. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199915248.013.12.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes a new method for determining the size of the underground cash economy for commercial sex in seven major US cities: Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Miami, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington, DC. In this innovative methodology, the operating assumption of the process is that estimates of the size of various domains of the underground economy are more accurate when comparative data across time and different locations are taken into account and when estimates of the size of one domain of the underground economy are forced to balance estimates of other domains in the underground economy with which they coincide. This method is used to derive a more rigorous estimate of the underground commercial sex economy and shed more light on its structure. To estimate its size accurately, simultaneous estimates are obtained for the size of the cash-based trade in illegal drugs and illegal firearms in each city.

Abstract:
A key objective of the study of work-family balance detailed in this report was to build an evidence base to inform policy creation or refinement targeting work-family balance and related implementation standards to ensure the protection and preservation of Qatari families. Two complementary projects were designed and implemented to achieve this key objective. The first project was a qualitative study involving in-depth interviews with 20 Qatari working adults (10 males and 10 females). The interviews were designed to learn the meaning of work-family balance among Qataris, identify the factors shaping work-family balance or the lack thereof, and collect firsthand detailed information on the use and value of policy-relevant work-family balance sup - ports for working Qataris. The second component was a survey designed to describe work-family balance among working Qatari adults, determine potential health and well-being consequences of poor work-family balance, and characterize Qataris’ use of and preferences for new work-family balance supports. The data from the qualitative interviews tell a very clear story of work-family balance among Qataris. Work-family balance is primarily viewed as working adults’ ability to meet responsibilities in both the work and family domains. Although work-fam - ily balance was valued and sought after, participants viewed work-family balance as an idyllic goal that is unattainable. Indeed, when individuals were asked about the last time they experienced balance, the most common response was “during my last vacation or extended holiday.” The challenge of achieving work-family balance was equally shared by males and females, although the challenge was heightened for females. Qataris recognized that “work” was essential to securing or providing a desirable family life; that is, work provided the financial wherewithal to obtain the features and comforts of contemporary family life in Qatar. However, the cost of this financial wherewithal was work hours and a psychological toll characterized as “long” and “exhausting” which left workers with insufficient time and energy for the family. Participants commented on the absolute necessity of paid maternity leave for work-family balance, and suggested it be expanded. Participants also discussed the importance of high-quality childcare, and the need for greater flexibility for attending to family responsibilities during the working day. Data from the quantitative national survey reinforce the results from the qualitative interviews. Work-family balance is a challenge for most working adults: if work-fam - ily balance were given scores like academic grades in school, the majority of both males and females would earn a "C" or lower (average, minimal pass or failure). As intimated in the qualitative data, working females’ work-family balance is statistically poorer than that of males. Poor work-family balance is associated with poorer physical and mental health, with particularly strong negative associations with depression. It appears the Human Resource Law of 2016 was effective in raising awareness of and access to paid maternity leave. However, a substantial minority of working Qataris lack access to work-family balance supports from their employer, and the supports that are provided by employers do not meet the expectations of the average Qatari worker.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Ivanka Trump’s Women Who Work in conjunction with Megyn Kelly’s memoir Settle for More and Ann-Marie Slaughter’s Unfinished Business. It first demonstrates how Women Who Work should be read as a neoliberal feminist manifesto. Trump’s how-to-succeed guide encourages the conversion of “aspirational” women into generic human capital by reworking motherhood in managerial terms, whereby women are exhorted to carefully manage the time they spend with their children. Yet, the notion of a happy work-family balance continues to serve as the book’s ideal, rendering it part of the neoliberal feminist turn. The chapter then provides a comparative analysis of all three “how-to” books, revealing how an identical market rationality undergirds all three—despite being authored by women who identify with opposing political camps. It thus highlights how neoliberal rationality’s colonization of more domains of our lives has undone conceptual and political boundaries constitutive of liberalism and liberal thought.

Abstract:
Many other forms of intellectual property beyond the big three—copyright, patent, and trademark—reflect particular national agendas and political power structures. Some of them exist only in particular countries. Others protect narrow interests. “Other rights” describes some of these rights: domain names, geographic marks, personality rights, trade secrets, and misappropriation and data protection. The rise of these sui generis regimes and the proposals to create a new right for fashion design in recent years reveal the extent to which intellectual property is a function more of politics and the power of special interests than carefully balanced policy decisions or high-minded theory.

Abstract:
To effectively perform our roles, emotions need to be regulated while both at work (e.g., with customers, supervisor) and at home (e.g., with children, partner); yet, researchers often focus on one domain or the other. In this chapter, four main questions are addressed: (1) Is emotion regulation performed more at work or at home? (2) Is performing emotion regulation at work (i.e., emotional labor) more distressing to the employee than performing emotion regulation at home (i.e., emotion work)? (3) How does performing emotion regulation in one domain affect outcomes in the other domain? (4) Do emotional intelligence and regulatory skills help to successfully balance work and family? This chapter highlights what is known and unknown within each section, and provides many avenues for future research to better integrate emotion regulation with the work–family interface.

Rubio-Marín, Ruth. Women’s Participation in the Public Domain Under Human Rights Law: Towards a Participatory Equality Paradigm Shift. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198829621.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores how human rights law has contributed to the shift towards participatory gender equality by legitimating the adoption of quotas and parity mechanisms to ensure women’s equal participation in decision-making. Since the adoption of CEDAW, human rights law has moved away from formal equality notions that simply affirm women’s equal political rights. Instead, we see growing endorsement of substantive equality doctrines that validate the adoption of gender quotas, initially as temporary special measures to ensure women equal opportunities, and, more recently, as permanent measures targeting the gender-balanced composition of an ever-expanding range of public and private governance bodies. The chapter explores how human rights law connects this participatory turn to issues of pluralism, calling attention to the need for public bodies to represent the full diversity of the population, and calling on state parties to increase the participation of women from ethnic minorities, indigenous groups, and religious minorities.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a review of neuroscientific principles and findings that inform the understanding of the intraindividual and interindividual experience of work–life conflict and enrichment. Advances in neuroscientific research have generated a better understanding of different basic processes that underlie role conflict, such as expectations, attention, multitasking, and stress. In the tradition of positive psychology we have seen a significant shift in work–family research toward a positive approach, complementing a conflict perspective with a focus on facilitation, enrichment, and balance. In this chapter we highlight two resources that are key for understanding positive spillover effects: energy/dopaminergic levels and social support. Inspired by insights, theories, and methods in neuroscience, we formulate recommendations for future interdisciplinary research in the work–family research domain.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the role of “power politics”—the domain of national security interests and the procurement and use of military power—in the decline of mass atrocities in East Asia. It suggests that power politics made an important, but not the singularly most important, contribution. The chapter has three parts. First, it explores how conventional power politics contributed to the decline of mass atrocities in East Asia. Although not central to the overall story, once they were established, the balance of power and both conventional and nuclear deterrence played a role in limiting the further escalation of potential conflicts. Second, it examines the limits of power politics. Third, it points to specific security practices that were more consequential, including the development of omnidirectional security relations, a tendency to avoid destabilizing competition, de-polarization, and the enmeshing of great powers in the region’s norms

Abstract:
With China’s rising international status, the importance of India-Japan security relations has grown commensurately. India’s and Japan‘s importance for each other security has grown commensurately with China rising international status. Yet their relationship illustrates the aspirations and limits of the Look East Policy. India’s and China’s Japan’s common concern vis-à-visabout China is as much a product of political proximity as of strategic ambiguity. Many of the dimensionsDimensions of this relationship, including the construction by JapanJapan’s construction of economic corridors in India, have potential strategic consequences. Their cooperation offers a mix of integration and balancing vis-à-vis China. In the strategic domain though, the convergence between Tokyo and New Delhi is still in its infancy while Indian and Japanese decision makers are very careful in their commitments towards one another. Both India and Japan are supporting a transition towards a balanced multipolar system in Asia. Both however aspire to some form of leadership, but in Asia and need the other in the process. But both each will welcome the other as a comprehensive partner only as long as the other will not seek dominance.

Reber, Arthur S., and Rhianon Allen, eds. The Cognitive Unconscious. Oxford University PressNew York, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197501573.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The material in The Cognitive Unconscious began as a master’s thesis that examined the manner in which knowledge of fairly complex, patterned material could be acquired without any conscious effort to learn it and with little to no awareness of what had been learned. It was dubbed implicit learning and, over more than fifty years, became a vigorously researched area in the social sciences. The Cognitive Unconscious brings together several dozen scientists from a variety of backgrounds and presents a broad (and deep) overview of how the exploration of the cognitive unconscious grew from that first study to a domain of research to which contributions have been made by sociologists, neuroscientists, evolutionary biologists, modelers, social and organizational psychologists, sport psychologists, primatologists, developmentalists, linguists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists, and measurement and assessment researchers. The core message seems fairly straightforward. Unconscious, implicit cognitive processes play a role in virtually everything interesting that human beings do. The implicit and explicit elements of cognition form a rich and complex interactive framework that make up who we are. The volume has contributions from over thirty distinguished authors from nine different countries and gives a balanced and thorough overview of where the field is today, a bit over a half-century since the first experiments were run.

Mittelbach, Gary G., and Brian J. McGill. Community Ecology. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198835851.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Community Ecology provides a broad, up-to-date coverage of ecological concepts at the community level and is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and ecological researchers. The field of community ecology has undergone a transformation in recent years, from a discipline largely focused on processes occurring within a local area to a discipline encompassing a much richer domain of study, including the linkages between communities separated in space (metacommunity dynamics), niche and neutral theory, the interplay between ecology and evolution (eco-evolutionary dynamics), and the influence of historical and regional processes in shaping patterns of biodiversity. To fully understand these new developments, however, students continue to need a strong foundation in the study of species interactions, and how these interactions are assembled into community modules and ecological networks. Trait-based assembly rules are presented as another approach to understanding community assembly, especially for real-world communities that may contain hundreds of species. This new edition fulfils the book’s original aims, both as a much-needed up-to-date and accessible introduction to modern community ecology, and in identifying the important questions that are yet to be answered. This research-driven textbook introduces state-of-the-art community ecology to a new generation of students, adopting reasoned and balanced perspectives on as-yet-unresolved issues. Pictures and graphics throughout the text allow students to visualize advanced concepts.
