Thirty years after Mikhail Bakhtin came to the attention of the English-speaking world with Emerson & Holquist’s translation of The Dialogic Imagination, he continues to hold a prominent place in the scholarly fancy – particularly among those concerned with the sociality of language. But what have we learned from Bakhtin during this time? How has the “Bakhtinian perspective” contributed to the way researchers study and interpret linguistic phenomena? And more importantly, what can we learn about the sociality of language from the way Bakhtin has been taken up in the scholarly discourse?
These questions are addressed in the present study by comparing Bakhtin’s discourse (as it has been received) with the uptake of his theory in a selection of five peer-reviewed journals published between the years 2000 and 2011. Seven of the most commonly cited topics are examined in detail: (1) genre, (2) hybridization, (3) style & stylization, (4) double-voicing, (5) heteroglossia, (6) linguistic stratification & centralization, and (7) authority.
The surprising conclusion is that Bakhtin has had relatively little influence on the way these ideas are understood, even when he is cited as their source or inspiration, and that he is frequently invoked in support of views that he argues vigorously against. This disagreement is explained not as a breakdown of communication (in the structural sense), but – in line with Bakhtin’s own observations about the nature of discourse – as a product of the sociality of language, in which the histories and concerns of his interpreters actively shape the meanings they take him to be offering. The scholarly discourse on Bakhtin becomes a case study for the very phenomena Bakhtin describes.
It reveals that even avowedly “social” language research continues to reflect what Bakhtin calls “the centralizing tendencies in the life of language”. In particular, it reveals the enduring influence of Saussure and semiotic theory at the expense of the genuinely social model that Bakhtin consistently articulates. It consequently provides the occasion for a critique of the uptake and reproduction of theory in the “softer” social sciences, calling into question the adequacy of scholarly conventions in the face of socio-linguistic reality.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>English, Department of<br>Graduate

In Rabelais and His World, Mikhail Bakhtin presents us both with a theory of carnival, and with an account of the historical decline of the carnivalesque since the Renaissance. This thesis uses Bakhtin's work as a point of departure for an analysis of particular moments in the history of post-Renaissance comic theory. It is argued both Bakhtin's account of carnivalesque decline provides us with a potent framework within which to perform such an analysis, and that this in turn facilitates a thorough interrogation of, and engagement with, Bakhtin's theory of carnival. Chapter One outlines Bakhtin's theory, identifying its historical and utopian dimensions, and exploring some of the problems which it generates. Chapter Two addresses some of the methodological issues relating to a historical analysis of comic theory, and situates Bakhtin's theory of carnival in relation to recent work in the area of comic theory. The remaining chapters focus on particular comic theory texts in the light of Bakhtin's thesis. Chapter Three contrasts Kant's analysis of humour with Schopenhauer's theory, relating the former to its Enlightenment context and the latter to its Romantic context. Chapter Four explores Bergson's discussion of laughter, situating it in relation to modernism, while Chapter Five reviews Freud's theory of jokes, examining the proximity between the structures of carnival and the structures of the Freudian joke. Chapter Six focuses on a Brechtian theory of comedy, assessing its relationship with the carnivalesque tradition, while Chapter Seven attempts to update Bakhtin's thesis in relation to contemporary configurations by exploring recent arguments concerning the comic credentials of postmodern culture. It is argued in conclusion that, if post-Renaissance culture has witnessed a decline in the significance of the carnivalesque, then the trajectory of that decline has undergone' a complex series of historical shifts and reversals.

The thesis is a comparative analysis of the shared ideas and concerns in the works of Mikhail Bakhtin and Roland Barthes from the point of view of differences between French and Slavic literary structuralisms. Its background argument is that the structuralism developed in the later works of the Russian Formalists and by Prague Structuralists and Soviet Semioticians is more historically and socially oriented than its French version, defining the structure of a literary work as a system of all of its elements and effects (even those that take us outside of the text, like literary tradition and historical and political circumstances). In this sense, Bakhtin can be seen as a part of the Slavic structuralist tradition (and not opposed to it as is often claimed), and Barthes (seen throughout his career) is on the whole perhaps closer to the Slavic structuralism than he is to the French. The particular problems discussed are those of the relationship between literature and ideology, the notions of intertextuality, heteroglossia, dialogism and polyphony and the differences between them, and the role of the author. Barthes and Bakhtin shared a lifelong interest in the role of ideology in literature and the influence of authoritarian language or myth on culture in general and the literary text in particular. They looked for ways in which the deadening effect of the mythological (epic, monological) thought and word can be counteracted through literature, and different versions of what Kristeva termed 'intertextuality' played an important part in their treatment of the subject. They also both discussed the role of the author and their voice in the literary text, and the question of their power over the text, its characters (Bakhtin) and the reader (Barthes). The main thread of Barthes and Bakhtin's thought focuses on the problem of counteracting authoritarian language through literature, and the solutions they proposed can fruitfully be seen in the light of Slavic structuralism's notions of literary structure.

'Bakhtin and the Hegelian Tradition' explores the influence of Georg Hegel and Hegelianism in the philosophy of Mikhail Bakhtin. The thesis demonstrates that, either directly or indirectly (through neo-Kantianism, Lebensphilosophie, and phenomenology), Hegelian philosophy made a fundamental contribution to Bakthin's thought throughout his career. To this end, the thesis maintains a close connection between the historical analysis of philosophy and contemporary philosophical thought. Historically, the thesis discusses Bakhtin's work with reference to, among other, Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, and the important works of Bakhtin's contemporaries-especially the Lebensphilosophen Wilhelm Dilthey and Georg Simmel, the neo-Kantians Hermann Cohen and Ernst Cassirer, and the phenomenologists Edmund Husserl and Max Scheler. Philosophically, the thesis critically analyses Bakhtin's key concepts and theories in order to disclose their philosophical character. In particular the thesis evaluates the origin and evolution of Bakhtin's concepts of the subject, the object, the ought, culture and knowledge, and looks at his theories of being-as-event, intersubjectivity, language, genre, and world-view. By applying both analytic philosophy and Michael Kosok's formalised dialectical logic, the thesis demonstrates that many of Bakhtin's key concepts and theories have an indubitable Hegelian nature, or indeed origin. One of the most fundamental issues this thesis reveals is Bakhtin's desire to redefine and develop the nature of the Hegelian methodology, and in particular the nature of dialectics. As such, this investigation into Bakhtin's Hegelianism is valuable for the fact that it presents a new perspective on Bakhtin's philosophical concepts and theories, as well as a new viewpoint on Hegelian philosophy.

Previous issue date: 2018-12-11<br>Não recebi financiamento<br>This thesis aims to bring together some of the various concepts of Mikhail Bakhtin's broad range of studies and to correlate them with film language. On the studies carried out in a broad and unorganized manner completely by Robert Stam, a North American researcher dedicated to both Bakhtin and cinema, both as aesthetics and as language, we developed the junction of theories in a dialogical work. In this thesis we bring together the most diverse forms of expression of Bakhtinian thought and try to exemplify them, to demonstrate them, to give them a more understandable form of understanding, using the cinematographic language as another in this intellectual theoretical dialogue. Knowing that cinema and its language were never the intellectual goal of Bakhtin, we approach his theory in a dialogical way, in the pursuit of cinema as alterity. It was observed the polyphony present in the cinematographic works and of Mikhail Bakhtin, among other possible dialogues. A study was developed which sought to further enrich Bakhtinian studies in our country and which is presented as a thesis that addresses the dialogue, understanding and convergence between the forms of study, with a common objective, to demonstrate the feasibility and of Bakhtinian concepts in a living, multidisciplinary and dialogic art that is cinema.<br>Esta tese tem como objetivo oferecer suporte para relações dialógicas entre a ampla rede de conceitos desenvolvidos por Mikhail Bakhtin e a linguagem cinematográfica, ao discutir, operacionalizar e reunir, ética e esteticamente, a obra bakhtiniana a um grupo variado de filmes. Para isto, partimos da experiência comprovada do pesquisador estadunidense Robert Stam e seus estudos sobre cinema e Bakhtin, com o qual se buscou estabelecer diálogo para o desenvolvimento de um trabalho dialógico tanto como linguagem quanto esteticamente na busca de desenvolver em maior grau ideias que o pesquisador ofereceu como proposta, porém não como análise profunda. Dessa forma, buscou-se também expor nesta tese as mais variadas formas de expressão do pensamento bakhtiniano de modo a exemplificá-los, comprová-los e dar-lhes uma forma de entendimento sempre buscando a compreensibilidade dentro da linguagem cinematográfica, assumindo relação de alteridade para com esta dentro do diálogo intelectual. Ao considerar que o cinema e sua linguagem não foram objeto de análise ou pesquisa de Bakhtin, tendo sido somente objeto de entretenimento para o mesmo, esta tese se propõe dialogicamente relacionar sua teoria junto à linguagem cinematográfica em relação clara de alteridade, observando a polifonia presente nas obras fílmicas e outros conceitos como carnavalização, dentre outros possíveis. Por fim, desenvolveu-se um trabalho que buscou enriquecer o legado intelectual de Mikhail Bakhtin e seu círculo em nosso país, propondo uma tese sobre o diálogo, o entendimento e as convergências entre as formas de estudo realizadas, com o objetivo de comprovar a viabilidade e atualidade dos conceitos do filósofo russo em uma arte viva, multidisciplinar e dialógica que é a sétima arte ou o cinema.

How is Bakhtin's conception of novelistic openness distinct from modernist-dialectical irresolution or open-endedness? Is Women in Love a Bakhtinian "open totality"? How is dialogic openness (as opposed to modernist indeterminacy) a "form-shaping ideology" of comic interrogation?<br>This study tests whether dialogism illuminates the shape of openness in Lawrence. As philosophers of potentiality, both Bakhtin and Lawrence explore the dialogic "between" as a state of being and a condition of meaningful fiction. Dialogism informs Women in Love. It achieves a polyphonic openness which Lawrence in his later fictions cannot sustain. Subsequently, univocal, simplifying organizations supervene. Dialogic process collapses into a stenographic report upon a completed dialogue, over which the travel writer, the poet or the messianic martyr preside.<br>Nevertheless, the old openness can be discerned in the ambivalent laughter of The Captain's Doll, St. Mawr or "The Man Who Loved Islands." In these retrospective variations on earlier themes, laughing openness of vision takes new, "unfinalizable" shapes.

Previous issue date: 2011-08-30<br>This thesis is a study of Freire´s approach on literacy, from the hypothesis of interface between his pre- ssumptions and bakhtinians about philosophy of language, traced in our objective. For that, the books that Freire read, in order to organize his proposals were reread. In this sense, SOUZA's (2001) sketch was essential, with the book Um convite à leitura de Paulo Freire. When reading Freire's trajectory, some studies are vital: Vasconcelos e Brito (2006), um glossário dos Conceitos de educação em Paulo Freire, dealing with terms like antidialogicity, dialogue, dialogicity, dialogism. Rosas (2004) and Scocuglia (1999), intends to seize the experiences that led to the books which fundamented the conceptions in "tempos fundantes". In this perspective, the path of bakhtinian philosophical concepts was maped, chronologically, according to biographers as Clark and Holquist (2003), Ponzio (2008). In treating the main concepts of Bakhtin, studies were taken on Brait (2005, 2006 and 2009) and others like Faraco and Tezza (2009); Faraco (2001), Tezza (2002); SOUZA (2002), Fiorin (2001), SOBRAL (2005, 2009), that point out that path of the main concepts which constitute his philosophy, such as language,
word, consciousness, dialogue and dialogism. Not in a static perspective, but in the philosophical macro-project of this thinker that put the language in the centre of human interaction, from which results in valuing the world, reflected and refracted for words, the language tool. That project apparently came from the same place that
Freire´s did, who created an educational approach, in which words could stop serving oppression. During that process, Freire systemized propositions for literacy, which, in this study, were named Pedagogy of Reading. The analisis of Bakhtin´s thought came from the text Para uma filosofia do ato, spotlighted as the philosophical matrix
of everything that comes later; which confirms and explains the other texts (Amorin, 2009) ; "synthesis of bakhtinian thought" (SOBRAL, 2005). By Freire, it iniciates by A Importância do Ato de Ler, in the three articles that complete each other (2008), which demands the appreciation of the first study of Freire´s thought: Educação e Atualidade Brasileira (2001), passing by others , in which he builds his approach for reading. In a brief discussion, the motivating historical-sociological aspects for bakhtinian philosophy, the concepts sketched in the basis of his philosophical anthropology. By Freire, in the third chapter, there are philosophical-linguistic preassumptions for reading. In the next chapter, two ways: the analysis of Freire and bakhtinian paths space and time, implicit or explicit conceptions in their texts, divergences and convergences between their bibliographical influence. Then, a comparison of what is called, in this thesis, Freire´s Pedagogy of Reading and the bakhtinian philosophy of language, their theoretical lines. Approximation and-or distances between their conceptions of language, word, consciousness, dialog and dialogism, in the books they read. In conclusion, we present the (mis)matches between these two masters of Dialetic.<br>Esta tese traz um estudo da proposta freireana para a alfabetização, a partir da hipótese de interfaces entre seus pressupostos e os da filosofia da linguagem de Bakhtin, delimitados nos objetivos. Para tanto, buscou-se refazer o percurso das leituras empreendidas por Freire na construção da arquitetônica de suas proposições. Nessa direção, seguiu-se o panorama da produção de Freire, apresentado por Souza (2001), no livro Um convite à leitura de Paulo Freire. Na reconstrução dessa trajetória, alguns estudos de vital importância: Vasconcelos & Brito (2006), um glossário dos Conceitos de educação em Paulo Freire, tratando de termos como antidiálogo, diálogo, dialogação, dialogismo. Rosas (2004) e Scocuglia (1999), um resgate das experiências que o conduziram às leituras no intuito de fundamentar as concepções forjadas em tempos fundantes . Também nessa perspectiva, mapeou-se o percurso dos conceitos filosóficos de Bakhtin, seguindo a cronologia apontada pelos biógrafos Clark & Holquist (2003), Ponzio (2008). No trato com os principais conceitos de Bakhtin, foram tomados os estudos de Brait (2005, 2006 e 2009) e de outros como Faraco & Tezza (2009); Faraco (2001), Tezza (2002); Souza (2002), Fiorin (2001), Sobral (2005, 2009), que apontam o percurso dos principais conceitos constitutivos da filosofia por ele proposta, dos quais foram elencados linguagem, palavra, consciência, diálogo e dialogismo. Não em uma perspectiva estanque, mas no interior do macroprojeto filosófico desse pensador que colocou a linguagem no cerne da interação humana, da qual resulta a valoração do mundo, refletida e refratada pela palavra, material da linguagem. Tal projeto trilhou um caminho de aparentes coincidências com o de Freire, que construiu uma
proposta educativa na qual a palavra deixasse de prestar serviços à opressão. No percurso, Freire sistematizou proposições para a alfabetização, as quais nesta pesquisa denominaram-se de Pedagogia da Leitura. A análise do pensamento de Bakhtin partiu do texto Para uma filosofia do ato, apontado como a matriz filosófica de tudo o que vem depois; que confirma e esclarece os demais textos (Amorim,
2009); síntese do pensamento bakhtiniano (SOBRAL, 2005). De Freire, iniciou-se com A Importância do Ato de Ler em três artigos que se completam (2008), cuja leitura exigiu retorno à sua primeira sistematização escrita: Educação e Atualidade Brasileira (2001), perpassando outras obras nas quais fundamentou os pilares de sua proposta e esboçou os pressupostos linguístico-filosóficos para a alfabetização. Em uma breve discussão, os aspectos histórico-sociológicos condicionantes da filosofia de Bakhtin, dos conceitos elaborados nas bases de sua antropologia filosófica. Na sequência, dois encaminhamentos são apresentados: a análise do trajeto de Freire e de Bakhtin espaços e tempos, concepções subjacentes aos escritos ou neles explicitadas, distanciamentos e convergências entre os determinantes de suas leituras. Depois, o confronto do arcabouço filosófico do que neste estudo é concebido como uma pedagogia freireana da leitura e o da filosofia bakhtiniana da linguagem; as vertentes teóricas de cada um. Aproximações e\ou distanciamentos entre suas concepções de linguagem, palavra, consciência, diálogo e dialogismo, nas leituras que empreenderam. Na conclusão, os (des)encontros entre esses grandes filósofos do Dialogismo são analisados.

Previous issue date: 2011<br>Milton Valente<br>Este trabalho realiza um estudo metateórico visando a construir uma interpretação para o conceito de polifonia em Bakhtin, a partir de investigação sobre seu escopo em Problemas da Poética de Dostoiévski. Trata-se de uma tentativa de mapear o território da polifonia, frente à heterogeneidade e dispersão conceitual que se apresenta para sua compreensão, e, a partir daí, discutir a aplicabilidade, em obras literárias, dessa noção tal como proposta por Bakhtin. O material de investigação é a obra Problemas da Poética de Dostoiévski, de Bakhtin, e o corpus de análise são passagens em que os termos polifonia e polifônico aparecem em PPD. Os resultados do estudo apontam que a polifonia é essencialmente um tipo especial de estrutura, a partir da qual um novo tipo de romance é criado, o romance polifônico de Dostoiévski, caracterizado pela independência, imiscibilidade, equipolência de vozes. O termo designa também uma visão de mundo, em que vozes múltiplas e consciências independentes e não fundíveis têm direito a existência. Já a tentativa de aplicar a noção fora do universo dostoievskiano mostrou que a polifonia não pode ser entendida como um padrão unitário para julgamento de obras. Vê-la assim implica obscurecer um dos aspectos mais instigantes da reflexão bakhtiniana sobre a produção literária: é na e pela própria obra que o roteiro para o estudo de sua configuração pode ser encontrado. No entanto, da leitura cuidadosa de PPD, princípios de análise podem ser depreendidos cuja generalidade permite o estudo de qualquer obra literária, preservando-se sua singularidade. A partir da pesquisa, concluímos que, em vez de tomar categorias pré-estabelecidas para verificar sua ocorrência na obra escolhida como objeto de estudo, a operação deve ser inversa, ou seja, é preciso partir da obra para nela encontrar os modos de sua composição particular.<br>Este trabajo realiza un estudio metateórico teniendo como objetivo construir una interpretación para el concepto de polifonía en Bajtín, desde la investigación sobre su alcance en Problemas de la Poética de Dostoievski. Este es un intento de mapear el territorio de la polifonía, enfrente de la heterogeneidad y dispersión conceptual que se presenta para su comprensión en el ámbito de los estudios literarios, y, de ahí, discutir la aplicabilidad, en obras literarias, de esa noción tal como fue propuesta por Bajtín. El material de investigación es la obra Problemas de la Poética de Dostoievski, de Bajtín, y el corpus del análisis son pasajes en que los términos polifonía y polifónico surgen en PPD. Los resultados del estudio señalan que la polifonía es esencialmente un tipo especial de estructura, de la que se crea un nuevo tipo de novela, la novela polifónica de Dostoievski, caracterizado por la independencia, inmiscibilidad, equipolencia de voces. El término se refiere también a una visión de mundo, en el que múltiples voces y conciencias independientes y no fundibles tienen derecho a la existencia. Ya el intento de aplicar la noción afuera del universo dostoievskiano mostró que la polifonía no puede ser entendida como una unidad estándar para juzgar las obras. Verla así implica un oscurecimiento de uno de los aspectos más provocativos de la reflexión bajtíniana sobre la producción literaria: es en la y por la propia obra que la hoja de la ruta para el estudio de su configuración puede ser encontrado. Sin embargo, de la lectura cuidadosa del PPD, principios del análisis se puede deducir que, en general permite el estudio de cualquier obra literaria, preservando su singularidad. De la investigación, llegamos a conclusión que, en lugar de tomar categorías pre-establecidas para comprobar su ocurrencia en la obra elegida como objeto del estudio, la operación debe ser inversa, es decir, es necesario partir desde la obra, para en ella encontrar los modos de su composición particular.

This thesis is a study of the thought of two philosophers and literary and cultural critics: Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) and Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). Despite the elements of incommensurability that exist between them, I argue that the thought of the one may be brought to revitalize and reilluminate the thought of the other. Bakhtin's and Benjamin's thought centres on the problems that arise from a dislocation of the nature of experience from the forms which enable human beings to make sense of that experience. Setting their work in the context of their times and of the philosophical tradition that they inherit, I examine their response to this dislocation through a discussion of their conceptions of habit, tradition, language and art. Closed forms (epic and monologue, for example, in the case of Bakhtin the traditional auratic work of art or the Romantic symbol, for example, in the case of Benjamin) provide a completion of experience that fixes experience within the flux of life. Nevertheless, forms such as these, both thinkers conclude, are implicated in social and political hierarchies and result in an objectification of human beings and the world that they inhabit. The thesis examines Bakhtin's and Benjamin's development of theories of open forms which challenge completion: dialogue and the novel, in the case of Bakhtin allegory and montage, in the case of Benjamin. I argue that the two thinkers' conceptions of such forms promote the preservation of (inter)subjectivity, the dismantling of authoritarian hierarchies and a responsible relationship between the conferring of form and the integrity of experience. Finally, I suggest that Bakhtin's and Benjamin's promotions of openness might be provisional positions which are predicated on a future completion that will come on either the eschatological or the revolutionary plane.

It seeks to recognize the dialectic-materialist character of the Bakhtin Circle conceptual proposals to define language. It is understood that in language, there is a mutual influence relation among otherness, dialogism and ideology, in the concrete enunciation and ultimately in the speech genre. The hypothesis that guides this study is that the elaborations of the Circle about the linguistic phenomenon are manifestations of a dialectical-materialist idea about the investigated reality/object.<br>Este estudo se propõe a realizar um cotejamento dos escritos do Círculo de Bakhtin acerca da linguagem com os pressupostos dialéticos apresentados por Marx e Engels, em Ideologia alemã e Manuscritos econômico-filosóficos. Busca-se reconhecer o caráter dialético-materialista das propostas conceituais do Círculo de Bakhtin para definir a linguagem. Entende-se que na linguagem há uma relação de influência recíproca entre a alteridade, o dialogismo e a ideologia, conformadas no enunciado concreto e, em última instância, no gênero discursivo. This dissertation shows how beneficial the ideas of the Russian literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin are when used to investigate both classical and more recent Scottish writing. An exploration of how a desire for a Scottish literary identity early in this century became inextricably bound up with a sense of historical necessity and psychological division, known as the Caledonian Antisyzygy, forms the basis for the first section of this work. The limitations of this mode of thinking and its failure as a 'theory' are then exposed and compared with the greater benefits of Bakhtinian thought. Succeeding chapters lead the reader from the vision of an historically centered and 'fixed' perception of Scottish literature that dominated the early decades of this century, to one which offers the possibility of endless interpretation. Close analysis of works by Robert Burns, James Hogg, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Hugh MacDiarmid investigate how useful Bakhtin's theories are for reinterpreting classic Scottish texts. The remaining chapters analyze works by a selection of contemporary Scottish poets and novelists (Alasdair Gray, James Kelman, Tom Leonard, Edwin Morgan, Liz Lochhead, and Muriel Spark) in an effort to display both the continuity of a literary tradition and the applicability of Bakhtin's ideas of dialogic interaction and carnival response to recent fiction and poetry that is concerned with the preservation of unique yet pluralistic community identities. It will be shown how Bakhtin's work lends itself to the project of freeing cultural identity from the bonds of a linguistic, historical, and geographical determination that is based on sterile oppositional constructs.

Dentro del contexto de los estudios literarios actuales, las figuras más reconocidas de la eslavística rusa son Mikhail Mijáilovich Bakhtin (1895–1975) e Iuri Mijáilovich Lotman (1922–1993). Por una parte, ambos han sido gestores de críticas profundas a los llamados “grandes metarrelatos modernos”, entre ellos el formalismo ruso, el marxismo, la lingüística tradicional, etc.; y, por otra, han elaborado nuevas concepciones teóricas que han sido capaces de transformar, de manera radical y definitiva, la forma de ver y estudiar tanto la literatura como el arte. En este estudio, por tanto, se redescubre a un brillante pensador como Bakhtin y se conoce a un relevante semiótico como Lotman, teórico prácticamente desconocido en los círculos académicos chilenos. La idea fundamental de esta tesis es dar cuenta del desarrollo histórico y del cambio epistemológico producido en la época posmoderna, desde el punto de vista de las contribuciones realizadas tanto por Bakhtin como por Lotman a los estudios literarios. De esta manera, se muestra, a través de un estudio descriptivo–comparativo, que dicha importancia radica en que ambos pensadores permiten la constitución de una línea de pensamiento que devela, en primer término, las transformaciones producidas en la época posmoderna y, en segundo término, los cambios acontecidos en la teoría literaria durante el siglo XX.

Autoethnography, as one of its leading practitioners Carolyn Ellis notes, allows the researcher to examine and write about their life in ways that are analytical, evocative and highly personal. Utilising this self-reflexive methodology and drawing on an eclectic set of data from both the past and present, I explore the way in which my life has exhibited aspects of Mikhail Bakhtin’s “carnivalesque” mode, and how certain humorous enactments have worked to undermine cultural conformity. I also critically reflect on my upbringing in a Christian family and attempt to draw a link not only between my own personal faith and carnival, but a broader connection between Christianity and the carnivalesque. The trickster – a key carnival figure – is simultaneously examined, manifest throughout not only in specific comic instances, but via the unorthodox nature of the thesis itself, which incorporates humorous paraphernalia such as memes, tweets and comic strips, and intertwines the “creative” and the “theoretical” in ways that are illuminating and occasionally disharmonious. Subjective experiences are filtered through various theoretical frameworks, among them feminist, anthropological, sociological and theological, contextualising the writing, and grounding it within an academic setting.
As is often the case with the autoethnographic approach, outcomes are less easily defined, more open to interpretation and reinterpretation, and it is for this reason that I speak of personal “reflections” rather than “findings” when discussing this thesis. What has emerged is the sense that my life is strongly informed by the carnivalesque, interwoven with moments of trickster-like disruption that often serve to challenge the status quo. Alternatively, I have encountered instances of extra-carnival behaviour, of subscription to those same cultural norms I claim to undermine. Significantly, such inclinations are often treated with an ironic, mocking glance, thereby channelling the self-directed laughter of carnival. Part of the uniqueness of this thesis lies in the fact that it diminishes the traditional distinction between theory and practice. Rather than simply examining the carnivalesque from a comfortable distance, I employ autoethnography as a means of embodying the carnivalesque, illuminating Bakhtinian theories such as dialogism in and through the research process, outcome and artefact. In this way, scholarship on both the carnivalesque and doctoral writing (particularly in the arena of creative arts) is extended and reimagined. This thesis seeks to shed new light on the carnivalesque by placing it within a particular, idiosyncratic context (the life of a 21st century, white Australian woman of Christian heritage) and by “living out” the humorous and subversive potentiality of carnival.

This paper addresses the correspondences between two current approaches in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis: Peircian semiotics and Bakhtin/ Volosinov's dialogism. Peirce's contribution to sociolinguistics has been the insight that language, though arbitrary, relies upon indexicality and iconicity to be meaningful. In their critiques of abstract objectivism, Bakhtin and Volosinov similarly argued that language is tied to the social contexts in which it is spoken (or written). Both approaches share three concerns. First, language is both arbitrary and socially and contextually grounded. A second issue is the relationship between social diversity and linguistic differentiation. Third, the role of language in the construction and transmission of ideology will be discussed.

O trabalho que aqui se enuncia debruçou-se sobre um álbum de canção. O exame se ancorou em dois arcabouços teóricos: o da Semiótica francesa, e seus desdobramentos tensivos, e o do Círculo de Bakhtin. A hipótese que firmou este trabalho é a de que o álbum de canção enquanto compilação compõe um todo de sentido. Ao selecionar as canções e as fotografias para compô-lo, a enunciação faz com que cada elemento funcione (pensa-se nas funções de Hjelmslev, 2003) e faça o todo significar na parte. A totalidade aponta para cada parte no momento em que cada membro pulsa a totalidade. O trabalho não atentou apenas às canções, mas também lançou luz à imagem/fotografia que inaugura o encarte do álbum de canção, para o que foram bem-vindos os postulados da Semiótica Visual. Dessa totalidade de enunciados emerge o estilo. Uma vez no âmbito do estilo, o trabalho acolheu o pensamento de Bakhtin quando o teórico elucida sua teoria sobre os gêneros discursivos. Alavancou-se, de igual modo, o pensamento de Discini, no momento em que a teórica firma parceria entre a Semiótica e Bakhtin para pensar o Homen encarnado nos textos, que é o estilo. A presente pesquisa, então, examinou o álbum enquanto gênero discursivo, ao articular uma temática (aquilo de que se diz) e uma composição (na maneira em que se diz), ambas fundadoras, e fundadas, do/pelo estilo (um modo póprio e recorrente de dizer da maneira pela qual se diz). Da recorrência do dizer se depreende uma recorrência no modo de ser: o modo de se fazer presente. O estilo é o homem, segundo Buffon. O estilo é duas pessoas, de acordo com Bakhtin. Para se refletir acerca dos homens encarnados nos textos, o trabalho se radicou na noção de estrutura aberta, recuperada nos trabalhos de Discini (2015). A partir daí, concebeu-se o estilo como imanente e diferencial. Imanente se ancora na língua como estrutura, e por isso, fechada. Diferencial se inaugura na transcendência: a abertura da estrutura. O caráter imanente instaurou uma análise que se baseou no formal, de onde se referenciou a semiótica enquanto teoria e método imanentes. O teor transcendente só foi integrado a partir do formal, quando a pesquisa se beneficiou do pensamento de Bakhtin. Concebeu-se neste estudo, a partir da noção de estrutura aberta, a transcendência como imanente, para o que se convocou o conceito de signo ideológico, cunhado em Bakhtin (1992). O álbum a que se refere é o Setevidas (2014), da cantora e compositora Pitty. Da totalidade dos enunciados de Pitty, emergiu seu estilo como modo recorrente de dizer, que remete a seu modo de ser. Esse modo de ser é sua imagem discursiva: seu éthos. Dos rastros do enunciado à enunciação. Do actante do enunciado ao ator da enunciação. Do ator ao enunciatário. O estilo é Pitty. O estilo é Pitty e seu enunciatário. O estilo é Pitty e o mundo percebido. O trabalho examinou da imanência à transcendência, pela aparência, no âmbito de uma estilística discursiva.<br>The research here presented dealt with a music album. The analysis was based on two different theoretical fields: the French Semiotics and its tensive unfoldings, and the Bakhtin Circle. The hypothesis formulated for this research is that the music album, as a compilation, is trespassed by a meaningful unit. In selecting the songs and the pictures in order to design it, the enunciation makes that each element functions (according to Hjelmslev, 2003) and makes the whole signify in its part. The totality points out to each part at the same time that each member connects to the totality. The research did not only pay attention to the songs, but also highlighted the picture featured in the album, to which were handful the statements of the visual semiotics. From this totality of enunciates emerges style. Once in the aim of style, the research made use of the Bakthinian theory about discursive genres. Equally important, the thought of Discini, at the moment in which the theoretician makes a link between Semiotics and Bakhtinian studies to think the Men incarnated in the texts, which means style. The current research, thus, examined the album as a discursive genre, while articulating a theme (that what is said about) and a composition (the way is said what is said), both founding and founded by and through style (a unique and recurring way of saying the way it is said). From the recurrence of the saying one can apprehend a recurrence in the way of being: the way of making oneself present. Style is the man, according to Buffon. Style is two people, according to Bakhtin. In order to reflect about the men incarnated in the texts, this work was based on the concept of an open structure, recovered in the written work of Discini (2015). From there, we conceptualized style as immanent and differential. Immanent is present in the language as a structure, therefore, closed. Differential is created in the transcendence: the opening of the structure. The immanent characteristic made the analysis become more concerned with the formal, from which Semiotics was referred to as immanent theory and method. The transcendental tone was only possible through the formal, when the research benefited from the Bakhtinian thought. It was conceived in this study, from the notion of open structure, the transcendence as immanent, to what was recalled the concept of ideological sign, coined in Bakhtin (1992). The album to which the research refers is called Setevidas (2014), by the singer and composer Pitty. Out of the totality of the enunciates by Pitty, emerged her style as a recurring way of saying, which reiterates her way of being. Such a way of being is her discursive image: her éthos. From the sources of the enunciate to the moment of the enunciation. From the actor to the interlocutor. The style is Pitty. The style is Pitty plus its interlocutor. The style is also Pitty and the world perceived. The research was made with its analysis going from the immanence to transcendence, through appearance, on a discursive stylistic bias.

Reelaborado como pergunta de trabalho, assim pode ser formulada: qual o estatuto do valor em sua relação com a linguagem para o Círculo? Até o presente momento, entre os estudos que se apóiam no pensamento bakhtiniano publicados no Brasil e considerados nesta pesquisa, inexiste um que tenha como foco principal a dimensão axiológica, muito embora a maior parte deles contemple de uma maneira ou de outra as noções com ela imbricada e/ou a ela associadas com intermitência conceitual e terminológica: entonação, entoação, tom emocional-volitivo, tom, tonalidade, índice social de valor, expressividade, apreciação, acento (apreciativo, avaliativo ou de valor), posicionamento valorativo, julgamento de valor, avaliação e ideologia. Considero mais representativas entre eles as análises de Faraco (2006a, 2007a) defendendo que a axiologia é um dos três eixos orientadores da concepção bakhtiniana de linguagem; de Miotello (2007b) e de Ponzio (2008), ambos abordando o valor predominantemente envolto nas discussões sobre ideologia; de Amorim (2006, 2007, 2009), ao chamar a atenção para o enfoque ético; de Sobral (2007a, 2007b, 2007c, 2008, 2009), que destaca as discussões de cunho filosófico; de Souza (1999) contemplando aspectos do valor na linguagem dentro da ―teoria do enunciado concreto‖ e de Tezza (2003), embutida na sua tese sobre a relação poesia-prosa para Bakhtin. É também em Bakhtin, na vertente epistemológica de seu pensamento, que busco orientação para esta pesquisa teórica, cuja característica predominantemente bibliográfica é re-significada nos limites deste trabalho, na medida em que se tenta estabelecer diálogos entre uma parte dos textos do Círculo publicados em português, os textos dos leitores-estudiosos bakhtinianos, principalmente os acima mencionados, e o texto desta dissertação. Por fim, propor uma tarefa cujo principal resultado poderá contribuir para o preenchimento da lacuna apontada justifica esta pesquisa.

Este trabalho pretende analisar cuidadosamente os mecanismos empregados por James Joyce para a representação das vozes e do convívio das várias instâncias e individualidades vocais em seu romance Ulysses. Para isso ele realiza uma minuciosa leitura (a todo momento partindo de exemplos concretos) de cada um dos dezoito episódios do romance, buscando primeiro estabelecer uma base, uma técnica primeira, a partir da qual será comentado o desenvolvimento de novas técnicas e novos efeitos, episódio a episódio. Para esta leitura, será central a idéia de arranjo, conforme definida por David Hayman. Num segundo momento, as formulações estabelecidas a partir da letra do texto joyceano serão confrontadas com o que os estudos do círculo de filósofos da linguagem cuja figura central é Mikhail Bakhtin puderam dizer a respeito das mesmas questões. Como parte de seu desenvolvimento e também como parte de seu resultado, o trabalho apresenta ainda uma nova tradução do Ulysses para o português<br>This work deals with the mechanics of the representation of voices and the representation of their co-existence (both as individual voices and as representatives of different levels of the narrative structure) in the novel Ulysses, by James Joyce. The first objective has been the detailed reading and analysis (always grounding the commentary on concrete examples) of each of the eighteen episodes of the novel, trying in a first moment to establish the notion of a basic technique, to which new procedures and new effects will be added as the novel progresses. In this reading, the ideas of David Hayman (best represented in his creation of the arranger) have been of the utmost importance. After that, all that has been extracted from Joyce\'s text has been compared to the writings of that circle of Russian scholars defined by the central presence of Mikhail Bakhtin, trying to refine from them all that may deal with the same questions. Both as part of its development and as part of its final product, this thesis presents also a new Brazilian translation of Ulysses

In the light of Bakhtinian theories, this research focuses on Ulysses as a postcolonial modernist text, in which Joyce appropriates modernist aesthetic strategies to serve the purpose of narrating the nation. Bakhtin is helpful here, not only because his theories serve especially well to explain the meeting and intersection of social, political, and cultural forces in periods of transition, but also because his attempt to establish a “historical poetics” helps both to explore discourse as social/individual ideology constituting the text and to interpret the dialogue interaction between sociohistorical forces and textual representation. As Bakhtin seeks to think through the issue of alterity and accentuates the all-importance of dialogue construction, his thought is useful for interpretation of Joyce-s endeavour to turn the hostility of binary opposition into polyphonic orchestration of heteroglossia. Mediating between such binary oppositions as Self and Other, private and public, inside and outside, the Joycean text demonstrates the importance of engagement with the past to transform its nightmarish impact into creative power for the composition of a postcolonial history; the significance of incorporating and negotiating dichotomies in a triangular structure and recognizing their coexistence for the constitution of a postcolonial subjectivity; and the consequence of integrating nationalist projects and cosmopolitan dimensions for the construction of a postcolonial nation. While Bakhtin sheds light on Joyce, Joyce complements what Bakhtin leaves unsaid, enlarging the scope and implication of Bakhtinian theories. The dialogue between the Irish author and the Russian thinker results in mutual enlightenment. The introductory chapter surveys the relationship between Joyce, Bakhtin, and postcolonial modernism, concentrating on the applicability of Bakhtinian concepts to the Joycean text. From the notion of the chronotope, the first chapter examines Stephen’s ambivalent attitude toward history, and focuses on his transformation of the past in the present time-space for the construction of a divergent and ongoing postcolonial future. The next chapter explores Bloom’s relation to colonial Irish society and inquiries into his shaping of an architectonic self, which results from the reaccentuation of public discourse and the mediation between individualism and collectivism. In the light of dialogism and grotesque realism, the third chapter deals with Molly’s dialogue answers to Bloom’s proposal of liberation, and investigates how her androgynously grotesque body transmits the external body, through her sexual body, into the textual body which is “Penelope.” The concluding chapter focuses on the interillumination of Joyce and Bakhtin: while Bakhtin helps refigure a postcolonial modernist Joyce, Joyce triangulates the binary structure of dialogue, underscoring the significance of trialogue as potential technique for postcolonial construction.

propaganda
televisiva e as interações verbais aí presentes sob a
perspectiva bakhtiniana. O
corpus principal da pesquisa compõe-se de dados retirados
de algumas propagandas
televisivas, tendo sido gravadas e transcritas 11
propagandas da empresa FIAT
Automóveis do Brasil, produzidas no período de 2000 a 2003.
A análise das
propagandas televisivas foi realizada com base nos
pressupostos da teoria de Bakhtin
(1981, 1992 e 1997), considerando-se conceitos de gênero,
interação verbal,
dialogismo, vozes discursivas, intertextualidade e ironia.
A partir dos resultados da
análise, propomos a classificação do gênero propaganda
televisiva como um gênero
intersemiótico complexo. A análise dos dados permitiu
também caracterizar a
propaganda televisiva como um gênero em que há a fusão do
próprio gênero
propaganda com o seu veículo de suporte, a televisão. O
estudo das interações
verbais mostrou que este gênero reflete aspectos histórico-
sociais, valores e
estereótipos, por meio das vozes ideológicas da sociedade,
que permeiam o discurso.
Este trabalho nos possibilita confirmar que a língua é um
fenômeno social, histórico
e ideológico e que o contexto é muito importante para a
compreensão do que é dito
ou do que se quer dizer em uma propaganda televisiva, que
se constitui como um
enunciado social (Bakhtin, 1981, 124).<br>The purpose of this research is to study the genre
television advertisements and
verbal interactions under Bakhtin`s perspective. The main
corpus of the study is
composed of data from TV ads, having been recorded and
transcribed 11 samples of
Brazilian car advertisements of FIAT Automobile Company,
produced from 2000 to
2003. The analysis of the ads was based on theoretical
concepts extracted from
Bakhtin`s language theory (1981, 1992 and 1997),
considering genre, verbal
interaction, dialogism, discursive voices, intertextuality
and irony. Based on the
results of the analysis, the classification of television
advertisements as a complex
intersemiotic genre is proposed. Data analysis also led
into the characterization of
TV ads as a fusion of the advertisement genre itself
together with its supporting
medium, the television. The analysis of verbal interactions
indicates that this genre
reflects socio-historical aspects, values and stereotypes
of a particular period of time
through ideological voices, which are intertwined in
discourse. This research
confirms that language is a social, historical and
ideological phenomenon and that
context is very important for the understanding of what is
said or of what one wants
to say in a television advertisement, which is itself a
social utterance (Bakhtin, 1981,

Previous issue date: 2017-03-03<br>In this research, we analyze the proposal of continuing training of the PNAIC to the literacy teachers who work in the 3rd year of Basic Education in the City’s Municipal Education System of Medianeira - Paraná - Brazil. Through the concrete statements of the subjects participating in this training in the city, we try to understand their perceptions about the weaknesses and contributions of the PNAIC to more consistent practices for the promotion of reading and writing teaching. The research focused on the area of Portuguese Language. The study carried out the bibliographical research and the field research. In order to justify the study, we are looking for theorists who have produced studies in Brazil about literacy and language and literacy questions: Mortatti (2000,2008), Soares (1985, 2002, 2003, 2004), Kleiman (1995), Klein 1997), Geraldi (2000,2014), Brotto (2008, 2009, 2013) and others. The basic theorists who base the analyzes are from the theoretical-methodological perspective of language of the Bakhtinian circle, and from the Historical-Cultural perspective of human development based on the studies of Vygotsky (1997). The field research was carried out with the subjects who work alongside the 27 classes of the 3rd Year, and make up a total of 18 teachers, of which 14 are teachers who work in the classrooms and four who work in the Municipal Department of Education as coordinator of pedagogy, and that also act in the orientation of the PNAIC studies in Medianeira. The instrument of data collection was the interview, with audio recordings, following a script with semi-structured questions. The methodology of data processing occurred through the analysis of the discourse present in the subjects' statements, in which we chose the categories of analysis polyphony or plurivocality, theme and dialogism, based on the theoretical-methodological perspective of Bakhtin / Volochínov language [1929] 2014). From the research with the literacy teachers, they demonstrated that the PNAIC offered possibilities for the promotion of teaching and reading, as well as demonstrated who is the subject constituted mediator teacher of Medianeira. It reflects and refracts the continuing formation of the Brazilian context and the data can be used for a broader analysis of the PNAIC.<br>Este estudo objetivou analisar a proposta de formação continuada do PNAIC aos professores alfabetizadores que atuam no 3º ano da Educação Básica na Rede Municipal de Ensino de Medianeira - Paraná - Brasil. Buscou-se, por meio dos enunciados concretos dos sujeitos participantes desta formação no município, as suas percepções sobre as fragilidades e contribuições do PNAIC para práticas mais consequentes para a promoção do ensino da leitura e da escrita. A pesquisa teve foco na área de Língua Portuguesa. O estudo abrangeu a pesquisa bibliográfica e a pesquisa de campo. Para fundamentarmos nosso estudo buscamos teóricos que têm produzido estudos no Brasil acerca da alfabetização e das questões que envolvem a linguagem e alfabetização: Mortatti (2000,2008), Soares (1985, 2002, 2003, 2004), Kleiman (1995), Klein (1997), Geraldi (2000,2014), Brotto (2008, 2009, 2013) e outros. Os teóricos de base que fundamentam nossas análises são da perspectiva teórico-metodológica de linguagem do círculo bakhtiniano, e da perspectiva Histórico-Cultural de desenvolvimento humano baseado nos postulados de Vygotski (1997). A pesquisa de campo ocorreu com os sujeitos que atuam junto às 27 turmas de 3º Ano, e perfazem um total de 18 professoras, sendo 14 professoras que atuam nas salas de aula e quatro, que atuam na Secretaria Municipal de Educação na função de coordenadora pedagógica, as quais são orientadoras de estudos do PNAIC no Município. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi a entrevista, com gravações em áudio, seguindo um roteiro com questões semiestruturadas. A metodologia de tratamento dos dados ocorreu por meio da análise do discurso presente nos enunciados dos sujeitos, em que elegemos as categorias de análises polifonia ou plurivocalidade, tema e dialogismo, fundamentada na perspectiva teórico-metodológica de linguagem Bakhtin/Volochínov ([1929], 2014). Por meio da pesquisa junto às professoras alfabetizadoras, essas demonstraram que o PNAIC ofereceu possibilidades para a promoção do ensino e da leitura, como também demonstraram quem é o sujeito constituído professor alfabetizador de Medianeira. Ele reflete e refrata a formação continuada do contexto brasileiro e os dados podem ser utilizados para uma análise mais ampla do PNAIC.

Esta tese envolve o desenvolvimento de um sistema informatizado para ser utilizado em atividades dialógicas na arte (em consonância com os Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais de Artes de 1998, a Política Nacional dos Museus e o Art. 29 da Subseção II da Lei nº 11.904). A partir do estudo da teoria de Mikhail Bakhtin, o sistema foi pensado como possuidor de uma Pragmática Comunicacional que se alicerça em conceitos trabalhados pelo autor. Esses conceitos foram incorporados ao Modelo Semântico/Formal do Sistema e compreendem o locutor e o interlocutor, os enunciados proferidos, a alternância entre vozes, dentre outros. A partir deles, registramos o percurso discursivo do público de Museus, Centro Culturais, Institutos Culturais, Galerias de Arte, Memoriais Artísticas e Culturais, dentre outros espaços expositivo, durante o ato de se expressar sobre obras de arte (produção de sentidos na arte). Mediante a formulação de enunciados verbais, imagéticos e sonoros - como efeitos da interação entre os interlocutores - buscou-se dar visibilidade a pontos de vista múltiplos, que envolvem o conteúdo do ato, seu processo e sua valoração. Cabe ressaltar que o objetivo do sistema é fomentar uma ação de diálogo entre todos os sujeitos envolvidos, na medida em que concebe meios tecnológicos para o registro e a exposição de enunciados acerca de obras de arte, a partir da adoção de tecnologia de Realidade Aumentada, no próprio espaço expositivo. Para avaliar a eficácia do sistema, realizamos uma série de atividades que envolveram Museus de Arte e Instituições de Ensino. Após, analisamos os enunciados proferidos durante as atividades, tendo em vista o locutor e o interlocutor, as vozes proferidas, a compenetração e o acabamento de sentido. Durante essa etapa, buscamos detectar elementos de linguagem, presentes nos registros dos participantes, que sinalizassem a produção de sentidos na arte.<br>This thesis involves the development of a computerized system for use in dialogical activities in Art (according to the National Arts Curricular Parameters of 1998, the National political Museum and Art. 29 of Subsection II of Law nº 11,904). Based on the study of Bakhtin's theory, the system was developed as a means of Pragmatic Communication which is based on concepts of the author. These concepts were incorporated into the Conceptual Model of the system and involves the speaker and interlocutor, the statements given, the alternation of voices, among others. From them, we registered the speech of the visitors to the Museum, Cultural centers, Cultural Institutes, Art Galleries, Cultural and Artistic Memorials, among other exhibition spaces, when interacting with works of art. The registration of the verbal statements, images and sound and also the effects of the interaction that occurred between the interlocutors presenting multiple viewpoints, involving the contents of the act, its process and its evaluation. The aim of the system is to promote a dialogue among all actors involved, by designing technologies which register and make it visible the statements about the works on display in the museum. Augmented Reality technology is used in the exhibition space. We have evaluated the efficiency of the system through a range of activities, involving art museums and educational institutions. We also analyzed the statements made during the activities, considering the speaker and interlocutor, the voices, the comprehension and the sense of completion. At this stage, we focused on the detecting language elements present in the statements of participants that indicate the production of senses in art. These records were exposed by the Augmented Reality technology in the museum space. At this moment, we understand that a new dialogue was initiated by the public, who had access to the system from tablet computers. From the analysis of these statements and impressions of the statements of participants of the dialogue, we believe that the system provides a means, which when used correctly, contributes to the production of meanings in art.

Understood this way, there s a concrete act of a subject that is historically situated, immersed in social
relations and dialogically constituted. The corporate discourse of sustainability is part of the ethical
discourses currently circulating in the social environment, with visibility in various spheres of activity,
including advertising. So the following questions arise: What ethical and cultural values are conveyed
in sustainability advertising? How such values are arranged in hierarchies in the ads? The aim of this
work is to analyze, through the dialogical theory, the central hypothesis that there are recurrences, to
some extent, on the values and the hierarchy of values in samples of the discourse of sustainability in
print advertising. As specific objectives, are proposed: a) to investigate how ethical and cultural values
are constructed and expressed through language in the materials; b) to describe verb-visual
occurrences that are present in the advertisements c) to understand the relationship between the
analyzed texts and the social context. As theoretical and methodological support, we used the dialogic
theory of Bakhtin Circle (BAKHTIN, 2010a, 2010b; VOLOCHÍNOV, 2009, 2011) articulated with
the Thompson s media theory (2007) and rhetorical categories on values by Perelman and Olbrechts-
Tyteca (2005). Five Banks advertisements were analyzed, three from Santander and two from Banco
do Brasil, that were published at Veja magazine and selected in the period between January 2010 and
January 2012. The methodology follows Bakhtin and it was developed based on dialogism of
language. The dialogic theory contemplates the relationship between text and context. These data were
considered: a) contextual data from the corporate websites of these banks and social, discoursive and
cultural framework that surrounds the advertising sphere; b) textual data, mainly from the Bakhtinian
notions of ideological sign and evaluative intonation (VOLOCHÍNOV, 2009; BAKHTIN, 2010a) and
concepts of values, hierarchy of values and commonplaces of argumentation (PERELMAN;
OLBRECHTS-TYTECA, 2005). The results show that there are recurrences, as well as peculiarities in
the way the ads from Santander and Banco do Brasil produce and convey values in the social context.
As an ethical value, sustainability is present in the analyzed advertisements, being sustained and
reproduced by the discourse of corporate social responsibility that is also present in the websites of
these banks. Sustainability is presented by both institutions as an ethical value to be pursued by the
Bank and its customers. However, some differences are observed in how values are arranged in a
hierarchy by each institution: for Santander, sustainable development is connected to the financial
value, for the Banco do Brasil, sustainability is restricted to water preservation. The advertising
language in the analyzed utterances builds ideological-discoursive positions that value sustainability
within a corporate and capitalist context in which assuming social responsibility is advantageous for
the company. Allied to the understanding that just as there are language practices that precede us, there
are practices that are part of our contemporary experience in the world, the analyzed texts materialize
dialogic relationships that integrate these discourses.<br>O ato ético bakhtiniano institui o pensamento de que o ser humano é inteiramente responsável
por seus atos. Compreendido dessa forma, há o ato concreto de um sujeito historicamente situado,
imerso nas relações sociais e constituído dialogicamente. O discurso corporativo da sustentabilidade
faz parte dos discursos éticos circulantes atualmente no meio social, tendo visibilidade em várias
esferas de atividade, inclusive na publicidade, surgem as seguintes questões: Quais valores éticos e
culturais são veiculados na publicidade da sustentabilidade? De que maneira tais valores estão
hierarquizados nos anúncios? O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar, por meio da teoria dialógica, a
hipótese central de que existem recorrências, em certa medida, quanto aos valores e à hierarquia de
valores em exemplares do discurso da sustentabilidade na publicidade impressa. Como objetivos
específicos, são propostos: a) investigar como os valores éticos e culturais são construídos e expressos
por meio da linguagem nas peças publicitárias; b) descrever ocorrências verbo-visuais presentes nos
anúncios; c) compreender a relação entre os textos analisados e o contexto social. Como aporte
teórico-metodológico, foi utilizada a teoria dialógica do Círculo de Bakhtin (BAKHTIN, 2010a,
2010b; VOLOCHÍNOV, 2009, 2011) articulada com a teoria da mídia de Thompson (2007) e com
categorias retóricas relativas aos valores de Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005). Foram analisados
cinco anúncios de instituições bancárias, sendo três do Banco Santander e dois do Banco do Brasil, os
quais foram veiculados na revista Veja e selecionados no período entre janeiro de 2010 e janeiro de
2012. A metodologia adotada segue a orientação bakhtiniana e foi desenvolvida com base no
dialogismo da linguagem. A teoria dialógica contempla as relações entre textos e contexto. Foram
considerados: a) dados contextuais, a partir dos sites corporativos das referidas instituições bancárias e
do quadro sociodiscursivo e cultural que circunda a esfera publicitária; b) dados textuais,
principalmente a partir das noções bakhtinianas de signo ideológico e de entoação valorativa
(VOLOCHÍNOV, 2009; BAKHTIN, 2010a) e dos conceitos de valores, de hierarquia de valores e de
lugares da argumentação (PERELMAN; OLBRECHTS-TYTECA, 2005). Os resultados demonstram
que há recorrências, assim como particularidades, na maneira como os anúncios do Santander e do
Banco do Brasil produzem e veiculam valores no contexto social. Como valor ético, a sustentabilidade
está presente nas campanhas analisadas, sendo sustentada e reproduzida pelo discurso da
responsabilidade social corporativa que está igualmente presente nos sites dessas instituições
bancárias. A sustentabilidade é apresentada por ambas as instituições como valor ético a ser almejado
pelo Banco e por seus consumidores. Contudo, são observadas algumas diferenças no modo como os
valores são hierarquizados por cada instituição: para o Santander, o desenvolvimento sustentável está
conectado ao valor financeiro; para o Banco do Brasil, a sustentabilidade está restrita à preservação
das águas. A linguagem publicitária, nos enunciados analisados, constrói posições ideológicodiscursivas
que valorizam a sustentabilidade no interior de um contexto corporativo e capitalista em
que assumir a responsabilidade social é vantajoso para as empresas. Aliados ao entendimento de que,
assim como há práticas de linguagem que nos antecedem, há práticas que fazem parte da nossa
experiência contemporânea no mundo, os textos analisados materializam as relações dialógicas que
integram esses discursos.

Previous issue date: 2016-11-08<br>Não recebi financiamento<br>Our objectives for this work are: 1) demonstrate, from Mikhail Bakhtin's theory, how an educational activity that promotes dialogic reading provides critical formation coordinated between orality and writing, the author authorship and the readers authorship in shared reading and 2) evidence how the reading of world and reading of word are given at the same time in an educational activity of success, such as Dialogic Literary Gatherings. It is a qualitative research and procedures are: a) participation in Dialogic Literary Gatherings; b) interviews about important moments in the life of the research subjects and with the teacher who performs the Dialogic Literary Gatherings in their classes; c) identification of meanings that emerge from the meeting between word and ideologies that are present during the reading. So as to do that, our references were the studies of Mikhail Bakhtin to compare and analyze the data, we discuss a new conception of reading, we reflect on the needs of the subjects of Youth and Adult Education (YAE) in school context and present the Dialogic Literary Gatherings as an educational activity of success that provides knowledge of quality to all participants involved through dialogic learning. As a result, we show the potential of the dialogic reading for the production of knowledge, for the constitution of innovative ways to mean text, more connected to the reality of the reader, we emphasize the need to discuss the educational practices of success that happen in YAE and reveal as the reader expands its own understanding of the world when it expands your reading comprehension.<br>Nossos objetivos para este trabalho são: 1) demonstrar, a partir da teoria de Mikhail Bakhtin, como uma atuação educativa que promova a leitura dialógica proporciona formação crítica coordenada entre oralidade e escrita, autoria do autor e autoria dos leitores em leitura compartilhada e 2) evidenciar como leitura de mundo e leitura da palavra se dão ao mesmo tempo em uma atuação educativa de êxito, como a Tertúlia Literária Dialógica. Trata-se de uma investigação de natureza qualitativa, cujos procedimentos envolvem: a) a participação em atividades de Tertúlia Literária Dialógica; b) entrevistas sobre momentos importantes na vida dos sujeitos da pesquisa e com o professor que realiza as Tertúlias em suas aulas; c) a identificação dos sentidos que emergem do encontro entre palavra e ideologias que circulam durante a leitura. Para isso, amparamo-nos nos estudos de Mikhail Bakhtin para entrecruzarmos e analisarmos os dados, discutimos uma nova concepção de leitura, refletimos sobre as necessidades dos sujeitos da EJA em âmbito escolar e apresentamos a Tertúlia Literária Dialógica como uma atividade educativa de êxito que proporciona conhecimento instrumental de qualidade a todos os participantes envolvidos via aprendizagem dialógica. Como resultados, mostramos o potencial da leitura dialógica para a produção de conhecimentos, para a constituição de formas inovadoras de significar o texto, mais conectadas com a realidade do leitor, salientamos a necessidade de discutir as práticas educativas de êxito que acontecem na EJA e revelamos como o leitor amplia a sua própria compreensão de mundo quando amplia a sua compreensão leitora.

Le travail souligne les questions théoriques et politiques impliqués dans ce processus, en suivant une perspective épistémologique et généalogique. Il est proposé que ce parcours a été marqué par deux réceptions distinctes des idées du groupe de Bakhtine, caractérisées par des différences significatives non seulement dans ce que concerne à l’amplitude de la référence aux concepts du Cercle de Bakhtine dans les travaux pratiques, mais aussi dans ce que concerne aux effets de l’appropriation de ces concepts. Previous issue date: 2011<br>A teoria do enunciado dialógico desenvolvido por Mikhail Bakhtin se apresenta como modelo teórico apto a justificar a produção judicial do direito, já que esta se coloca em ambiente discursivo, em que o outro se apresenta como integrante do processo de comunicação, atuando de forma responsiva. No mandado de segurança, a decisão judicial é posta com base na cognição feita pelo magistrado. O modelo de cognição acolhido na doutrina pátria, apesar de explicar a mudança entre a liminar (cognição sumária) e a sentença (cognição exauriente), não explica a mudança quando esta ocorre entre a sentença (cognição exauriente) e o acórdão (cognição exauriente). Isso se dá porque o modelo clássico parte da premissa equivocada de utilizar no direito as categorias próprias das ciências naturais. Sob o prisma dialógico tal problema não ocorre, já que o ato decisório, seja ele qual for, por ser um enunciado dialógico, goza do atributo da conclusividade e da exauribilidade, que o torna completo, mas aberto a resposta na cadeia discursiva. Assim a decisão que julga a liminar é um enunciado completo, pleno de sentido, que se coloca para o outro, tal qual a sentença e o acórdão. O modelo de análise de Mikhail Bakhtin compreende a mudança não como um problema, mas como algo inerente ao processo enunciativo. Mesmo quando a decisão é confirmada, a confirmação é uma resposta elaborada pelo outro na cadeia do enunciado

Em determinado período de sua história, o Charlie Hebdo passou a abordar o tema do fundamentalismo islâmico em suas charges. A figura sagrada para os muçulmanos foi, então, representada satiricamente em diversas edições, até que em 7 de janeiro de 2015, após uma série de conflitos entre o jornal e os extremistas islâmicos, a sede do semanário francês foi alvo de um ataque terrorista, com doze vítimas fatais. É para esse contexto que nossa pesquisa direciona a sua atenção. Analisaremos um conjunto de oito charges publicadas pelo Charlie Hebdo no período de 8 de fevereiro de 2006 a 6 de janeiro de 2016. O propósito, ao examinar semioticamente esse corpus, é descrever os mecanismos de construção do sentido das charges para compreender de que maneira o chargista, como um éthos ou um modo polemizador de presença, exacerbou satiricamente a doutrina islâmica e a figura religiosa emblemática para provocar o riso e criticar o fundamentalismo. Em nossa pesquisa, a noção de gênero será incorporada com o apoio teórico de Bakthin (2003; 2008; 2010; 2014; 2016), o que permitirá reconhecer as principais características da charge, conforme determinada temática, composição e estilo. Também a partir dos apontamentos bakhtinianos, definiremos mecanismos discursivos presentes nas charges: ironia, humor, sátira e polêmica. Dessa definição, surgirão os elementos que despontam as características do gênero e, consequentemente, o estilo Charlie Hebdo de satirizar. Com base nesse ponto, esperamos compreender o que teria força argumentativa para provocar a ira dos fundamentalistas. Em nosso estudo, buscaremos expor, sobretudo, os princípios relativos à semiótica greimasiana. Consideraremos, portanto, para nossa investigação as bases da semiótica narrativa e discursiva (GREIMAS; COURTÉS, 2016). Mas teremos o respaldo ainda da semiótica visual (FLOCH, 1985; 1986a; 1986b; 2013), com o intuito de entender como a forma do plano da expressão e do plano do conteúdo, conforme postulada por Hjelmslev (2003), vai ao encontro da substância da expressão e do conteúdo nesses textos verbo-visuais. Ao tomar corpo, nossa pesquisa encontrará apoio teórico e metodológico também na semiótica tensiva (ZILBERBERG, 2011). Nesse ponto, mostraremos os segmentos das charges que fazem crescer a intensidade da voz satírica e o seu potencial para causar atritos com o sujeito fundamentalista. Os resultados demonstrarão que a voz satírica do Charlie Hebdo é construída essencialmente por meio da presença exacerbada do outro, cujos valores julgados negativos são intensamente expostos. O alvo da crítica, o fundamentalismo islâmico, é assim desmoralizado por suas próprias atitudes. Essa forma de fazer sátira remete ao modelo de construção do gênero charge; entretanto, o que parece diferenciar o conteúdo das charges analisadas é a instalação da relação dialógica (BAKHTIN, 2016) entre sujeitos extremamente antagônicos, com intensa probabilidade de conflito nos (des)encontros das enunciações interdiscursivas.<br>At some point in its history, Charlie Hebdo began to address the theme of Islamic fundamentalism in its cartoons. Since then, the holy image for Muslims was satirically represented in several editions. It had happened up to January 7, 2015, when, after a series of misunderstandings between the newspaper and Islamic extremists, the headquarters of the French weekly newspaper was the target of a terrorist attack, having as consequence, twelve fatal victims. It is in this context that our research is directed. We will analyze a set of eight cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo in the period from February 8, 2006 to January 6, 2016. The purpose in examining semiotically this corpus, is to describe the mechanisms of construction of the meaning of the cartoons to understand how the cartoonist, as an ethos or a polemizing mode of presence, satirically exaggerated Islamic doctrine and the emblematic religious image to provoke laughter and criticize fundamentalism. In our research, the notion of genres will be incorporated with the theoretical support of Bakthin (2003; 2008; 2010; 2014; 2016), which will allow us to recognize the main characteristics of the cartoon, according to a specific theme, composition and style. Also from the Bakhtinian notes, we will define discursive mechanisms present in the cartoons: irony, humor, satire and polemic. From this definition, the elements that emerge the characteristics of the genre and, consequently, the Charlie Hebdo style of satirizing will appear. Based on this, we aim to understand what could have an argumentative force to provoke the wrath of fundamentalists. In our study, we will try to expose, above all, the principles related to greimasian semiotics. We will therefore consider for our investigation the bases of narrative and discursive semiotics (GREIMAS and COURTÉS, 2016). But we will still have the support of visual semiotics (FLOCH 1985, 1986a, 1986b, 2013), in order to understand how the form of the plane of expression and the content plane, as postulated by Hjelmslev (2003), meets the substance of expression and content in these verbal-visual texts. Whereas the development of these points brings consistence to our research, we will also find theoretical and methodological support in the tensive semiotics (ZILBERBERG, 2011). At this point, we will show the segments of the cartoons that increase the intensity of the satirical voice and its potential to cause friction with the fundamentalist subject. The results will demonstrate that Charlie Hebdo\'s satirical voice is essentially built through the exacerbated presence of the other, whose negatively judged values are intensely exposed. The target of criticism, Islamic fundamentalism, is thus demoralized by its own attitudes. This way of doing satire refers to the construction model of the genre \"cartoon\"; However, what seems to distinguish the content of the analyzed cartoons is the establishment of the dialogical relationship (BAKHTIN, 2016) between extremely antagonistic subjects, with an intense probability of conflict in the (dis) encounters of interdiscursive enunciation.

Esta tese tem por objetivo analisar a articulação entre riso e história em três textos de gêneros distintos, produzidos na última década do século XX a saber: o romance Avante, soldados: para trás, de Deonísio da Silva; o longa metragem Carlota Joaquina: princesa do Brazil, de Carla Camurati; a minissérie Caramuru: a invenção do Brasil, de Guel Arraes. As três obras apresentam pano de fundo histórico, abordando diferentes episódios da História do Brasil. O primeiro narra o percurso de uma tropa brasileira em um importante momento da Guerra do Paraguai; o segundo relata a história de Carlota Joaquina, esposa de D. João VI e a vinda da coroa portuguesa para o Brasil no início do século XIX e o terceiro conta sobre a união de um português, Diogo Álvares, com uma índia tupinambá, Paraguaçu, na primeira década do século XVI. As produções culturais mencionadas serão analisadas com base na teoria semiótica da cultura de Lotman e na teoria da carnavalização de Bakhtin. Este último fornece os elementos para que se compreendam as formas de riso e riso reduzido que se apresentam nas obras.<br>This thesis has the aim to analyse the link between History and laughter in three texts which belong to different genre and were produced in the last decade of the twentieth century. The three works are: the novel Avante, soldados: para trás, by Deonísio da Silva; the film Carlota Joaquina: princesa do Brazil, by Carla Camurati; and the tv series Caramuru: a invenção do Brasil, by Guel Arraes. They all present a historical background based on different episodes of the Brazilian History. The first narrates the course of events involving a Brazilian troop in a very important moment of Paraguay\'s War; the second tells the story of Carlota Joaquina, D. João VI\'s wife, and reports the transference of the Portuguese court to Brazil in the beginning of the nineteenth century; and the third talks about the union of a castaway Portuguese , Diogo Álvares, and a tupinambá native inhabitant in the first years after the conquest. All the cultural productions will be analysed based on Lotman\'s Semiotic Theory of Culture and on Bakhtin\'s Carnavalization Theory. The latter provides the elements to understand the forms of laughter and reduced laughter which appear in the texts studied.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-15<br>Several scientific studies demonstrate the existence of violence in Brazilian schools and try to understand the roots of this phenomenon. It is also noticeable the scientific concern with the effects that the violence exhibited by the television can cause to the subjects. Thus, we aim to analyze, in this dissertation, if the violence in the school is influenced by that transmitted by the television media. For this, we analyze the discourse of seventh year teachers of a State College of Primary and Secondary Education regarding the relation between the television media and the violence in the school. The college is located in the Interlagos neighborhood, in the municipality of Cascavel - PR. The choice of this institution was due to the fact that the neighborhood in question had the highest incidence of violence, according to the indicators of the Specialized Reference Center for Social Assistance I (CREAS I). We perform bibliographical and field research. In order to base the contextualisation between media and school violence, we refer to bibliographies of: Bakhtin (1998 [1988], 2000 [1979], 1999 [1929]), Faraco (2009), Brait (1999), Barros GEGe (2009), Bourdieu (1997), Martin-Barbero (1997), Koshino (2011) and Hall (2003). To address more specifically the formation of adolescent subjectivity, we use studies by Vygotsky (1996), as well as theoretical studies that associate television with violence: Charlot (2006), Barreto (1992), Groebel (1999), Merlo-Flores (1999), Watella, Olivarez, Jennings (1999), Betelheim (2002) and the like. Field research, which included the participation of subjects, developed from a posture that analyzes the subjects' discourse in relation to social facts, considering the economic, political and social context. The instrument of data collection used was the semi-structured interview. For this, we resort to scholars, such as: André (1986), Bogdan (1994), Minayo (2004, 1997), among others. The analysis of the collected data was carried out under the theoretical-methodological perspective of the language of the Bakhtinian circle, which offered the means to reach positions based on the materiality of discourse and the historical reality of social relations.<br>Diversos estudos científicos demonstram a existência da violência nas escolas brasileiras e procuram compreender as raízes desse fenômeno. É perceptível, também, a preocupação científica com os efeitos que a violência exibida pela televisão pode ocasionar aos sujeitos. Assim, objetivamos analisar, nesta dissertação, se a violência existente na escola sofre influência daquela transmitida pela mídia televisiva. Para isso, analisamos o discurso de professores do sétimo ano de um Colégio Estadual de Ensino Fundamental e Médio a respeito da relação entre a mídia televisiva e a violência na escola. O colégio está situado no bairro Interlagos, no município de Cascavel - PR. A escolha dessa instituição se deu pelo fato de o bairro em questão apresentar o maior registro de ocorrências de violência, de acordo com indicativos do Centro de Referência Especializado de Assistência Social I (CREAS I). Realizamos pesquisa bibliográfica e de campo. Para fundamentarmos a contextualização entre mídia e violência escolar, pautamo-nos em bibliografias de: Bakhtin (1998 [1988], 2000 [1979],1999 [1929]), Faraco (2009), Brait (1999), Barros (1999), GEGe (2009), Bourdieu (1997), Martin-Barbero (1997), Koshino (2011) e Hall (2003). Para abordar mais especificamente a formação da subjetividade do adolescente, recorremos a estudos de Vygotsky (1996), além de estudos de teóricos que associam a televisão à violência: Charlot (2006), Barreto (1992), Groebel (1999), Merlo-Flores (1999), Watella, Olivarez, Jennings (1999), Betelheim (2002) e afins. A pesquisa de campo, que contou com a participação de sujeitos, desenvolveu-se a partir de uma postura que analisa o discurso dos sujeitos na relação com os fatos sociais, considerando o contexto econômico, político e social. O instrumento de coleta de dados utilizado foi a entrevista semiestruturada. Para tanto, recorremos a estudiosos, como: André (1986), Bogdan (1994), Minayo (2004, 1997), entre outros. A análise dos dados coletados foi realizada sob a perspectiva teórico-metodológica de linguagem do círculo bakhtiniano, que ofereceu meios para chegarmos a posicionamentos calcados na materialidade do discurso e na realidade histórica das relações sociais.
