Abstract:
The search for origins, comparative empires, and textual scholarship that characterize the present study are actually quite old and go back to the very origins of Western historical, philological, and orientalist scholarship in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The European debate regarding “Asian empires” often boiled down to two main issues: oriental despotism and racial origins. While modern scholarship has continued the debate regarding despotism into the twenty-first century, the discussion regarding racial origins was closed off by the late eighteenth century and has received less attention since then. The evolution of the discourse can be observed in the writings of François Bernier, Jean Sylvain Bailly, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, Voltaire, Edward Gibbon, William Jones, and William Erskine.

Abstract:
This book examines a group of black Christian intellectuals and activists who looked abroad, even in other religious traditions, for ideas and practices that could transform American democracy. From the 1930s to the 1950s, this network of intellectuals and activists drew lessons from independence movements around the world for an American campaign that would be part of a global network of resistance to colonialism and white supremacy. This book argues that their religious perspectives and methods of moral reasoning developed theological blueprints for the later civil rights movement. The book analyzes groundbreaking work of individual intellectuals and activists and reveals collaborations among them, including Howard Thurman, Benjamin Mays, and William Stuart Nelson; pioneers of African American Christian nonviolence James Farmer, Pauli Murray, and Bayard Rustin; and YWCA leaders Juliette Derricotte and Sue Bailey Thurman. The book traces the ways these fertile intersections of worldwide resistance movements, American racial politics, and interreligious exchanges that crossed literal borders and disciplinary boundaries can enrich our understanding of the international roots of the civil rights movement and offer object lessons on the role of religion in justice movements.

Bailey, Eric. Race and Ethnic Relations on Campus. ABC-CLIO, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216003939.

Full text
Abstract:
Can college students confront race relations issues directly and make positive changes? Yes, they can. This book provides a fresh, practical approach to addressing these issues—individually and collectively—to ignite a positive revolution in race and ethnic relations. As racial and ethnic incidents continue to occur at college campuses across the nation, an esteemed African American professor who teaches in the heart of a region that has seen some of the most volatile racial incidents in American history breaks the uneasy silence to respond to growing concerns from undergraduate students. In Race and Ethnic Relations on Campus: Understanding, Empowerment, and Solutions for College Students, Eric J. Bailey presents a new approach to addressing and better understanding the major controversial issues associated with race and ethnic relations for today's college students. This book confronts commonplace race relations issues directly and sets forth a completely different way of addressing these problems that empowers today's college students to take charge and start to effect change—to do something about racially charged conflict rather than to simply talk about it. The chapters describe how race and ethnic relations issues typically arise on college campuses, share insight into how national incidents affect college students' reactions to incidents on their own campus, and identify the negative consequences of poor race relations as well as describe the positive effects of good race relations.

Bailey, Eric J. Black America, Body Beautiful. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400619410.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite all the medical and media attention focused on the rate of overweight and obesity in the African American population, African American images and body types are greatly influencing changes in the fashion, fitness, advertising, television and movie industries. This is because overweight, like beauty, can be in the eye of the beholder. Most research studies investigating attitudes about body image and body type among African Americans have shown they are more satisfied with their bodies than are their white counterparts and that there appears to be a wider range of acceptable body shapes and weights, and a more flexible standard of attractiveness, among black Americans as compared to whites. That fact is not being lost on leaders of industries that might profit from understanding this wider range of beauty, as well as playing to it. In this book, medical anthropologist Eric Bailey introduces and explains the self–acceptance and body image satisfaction of African Americans, and traces how that has spurred changes in industry. His book fills the void of scientific evidence to enhance the understanding of African Americans’ perceptions related to body image and beauty—and is the first to document these issues from the perspective of an African American male. Despite all the medical and media attention focused on the rate of overweight and obesity in the African American population, African American images and body types are greatly influencing changes in the fashion, fitness, advertising, television, and movie industries. This is because overweight, like beauty, can be in the eye of the beholder. Most research studies investigating attitudes about body image and body type among African Americans have shown they are more satisfied with their bodies than are their white counterparts. Most black women, for example, are of course concerned with how they look, but do not judge themselves in terms of their weight and do not believe they are valued mostly on the basis of their bodies. Black teen girls most often say being thick and curvaceous with large hips and ample thighs is seen as the most desirable body shape. Thus, there appears to be a wider range of acceptable body shapes and weights, and a more flexible standard of attractiveness, among black Americans as compared to whites. That fact is not lost on leaders of industries that might profit from understanding this wider range of beauty, as well as playing to it. Voluptuous supermodel Tyra Banks is just one African American who’s broken the mold in that industry. The effects have been seen right down to department and local clothes stores, where lines of larger and plus–size fashions are expanding, becoming more colorful and more ornate. In the fitness industry, health gurus Madonna Grimes and Billy Blanks have been revolutionizing how people get fit and how fitness needs to be redeveloped for the African American population. Advertising has taken a similar turn, not the least manifestation of which were the major campaigns Dove and Nike ran in 2005 with plus–sized actresses (who continue to appear in promotions for both companies). In movies and on television shows, the African American beautiful body image has followed suit.

Bail, Paul. Anne Tyler. Greenwood, 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400613203.

Full text
Abstract:
Anne Tyler's novels strike a deep chord of responsiveness in her readers because her novels bring to life contemporary characters to whom we can instantly relate and in whose experiences we can see mirrored our own. Tyler's novels deal with the human experience: relationships between marital partners, between parents and children…between siblings; the meaning of love; the nature of identity; impermanence and change; and loss and continuity. In Anne Tyler novels, life is a complexity whose texture is built out of multiple layers. In this insightful study, Paul Bail shows us how Tyler constructs the complex reality of life through character, narrative point of view, theme, and literary devices. With the exception of Tyler's earliest two novels, which she prefers to forget, a chapter is devoted to each of the other novels she has written. Among the twelve are her unforgettable novels of family relationships and love…loss and renewal, such asDinner at the Homesick Restaurant,The Accidental Tourist, andBreathing Lessons. Also included is an analysis of Tyler's most recent novel,A Patchwork Planet. Following a biographical chapter that relates Tyler's life to her work, Bail discusses the novels within the literary tradition of Southern regional literature, women's literature, and popular culture. He also explores the influence of religion on her writing. Each novel is discussed in an individual chapter that includes sections on plot, characters, themes, literary devices, historical setting, and point of view. Bail also offers an alternate critical approach from which to read the novel, such as feminist or multicultural criticism. This study is ideal for students and readers of Anne Tyler and will enrich the reading and appreciation of her novels.

Simon, Gleeson, and Guynn Randall. Part I Elements of Bank Resolution Regimes, 2 Bank Resolution Techniques. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199698011.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the available ‘toolkits’—or mechanisms—for resolving all types of banks and their affiliates, with the caveat that such tools can only be implemented on a case-by-case basis. In order to demonstrate the coverage of these methods, the hierarchy of approaches to bank failure is as follows: sale of the business by the purchase of assets and the assumption of liabilities (i.e. a purchase and assumption transaction), write-down or conversion of long-term unsecured debt into equity (bail-in), liquidation, and state aid (bail-out). Additionally, the normal state of resolution for a business in the commercial world is a restructuring in which creditors consent to a variation in their rights in order to maximize the residual value of an insolvent commercial company for the collective benefit of all its stakeholders and preserve its critical operations for the benefit of the broader market—a method that should be adapted for use in the banking industry.

Deigh, John. Williams on Practical Reason. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190878597.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Bernard Williams’s controversial view about reasons for action is the topic of this essay. The essay explains Williams’s internalist account of reasons for action as an improvement on Donald Davidson’s account. It then corrects Williams’s criticism of externalist accounts of reasons for action by conceding that such accounts are viable as long as they do not imply that the reasons a person has for doing an action can explain his or her doing it. The concession follows from acknowledging the very different program of studying reasons in ethics exemplified in the work of Kurt Baier. Once the correction is made to Williams’s criticism, the essay offers a defense of his view against the criticisms of T. M. Scanlon and Christine Korsgaard.

Wilson Jr., Charles E. Gloria Naylor. Greenwood, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400658068.

Full text
Abstract:
In each of her five novels, Gloria Naylor invites the reader to join her characters in their journeys to move beyond established boundaries and embrace an increasingly diverse society. With lucid analyses of each work, this Critical Companion helps readers comprehend how Naylor successfully links the trials of her African American characters to the struggles of human beings at variance with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Insights into Naylor's own struggles and successes are provided in a richly drawn biographical chapter, which incorporates fresh materials from a recent interview conducted for this book. Naylor's place within the larger framework of the African American narrative traditions is considered as well. Beginning with a full chapter on Naylor's debut successThe Women of Brewster Place(1982), the literary components of each novel are examined:Linden Hills(1985)Mama Day(1988),Bailey's Cafe(1992), andThe Men of Brewster Place(1998). In addition to a comprehensive plot synopsis, character portraits, and thematic discussions given for each, all works are carefully related to their historical contexts. By understanding the extent to which seminal events, such as the Great Migration and the ushering in of the Civil Rights Movement, serve as the background for Naylor's works, readers can better appreciate them. Throughout the text, particularly in the alternate critical readings provided, all terms and concepts are clearly explained for the student and the general reader. A select bibliography cites biographical sources, interviews, reviews, criticism, and related works of interest.

Bilański, Piotr. Trypodendron laeve Eggers w Polsce na tle wybranych aspektów morfologicznych i genetycznych drwalników (Trypodendron spp., Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae). Publishing House of the University of Agriculture in Krakow, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.15576/978-83-66602-38-0.

Full text
Abstract:
In Poland, there are 4 species of the liypodendron genus: T lineaium Oliv., T domestkum L., T signature Fakir. and 7: laeve Egg. Trypodendron laeve is the leastknown of this group. Many factors had influence on the state of research on this species, including taxonomic aspects. Taking into account the unsatisfactory state of knowledge regarding the prevalence of T iaeve in Poland, as well as scarce information on the morphology of this species, research was undertaken to I) document the presence, including new sites, of T laeve in Poland and define, if possible, the habitat and trophic conditions that may affect its occurrence, as well as II) determinate suitability of biometric and genetic methods for correct identification of t laeve against the background of other ambrosia beetle species. Research on the occurrence of T laeve in Poland, was carried out on 143 areas located throughout the country, representing various environmental conditions, primarily such as species composition of tree stands, terrain, altitude (from 16 to 929 meters above sea level) and their location in relation to zoogeographic regions. The research material was obtained mainly using various types of traps for catching ambrosia beetles baited with pheromone. Only in a few cases when attacking the wood of trees, the imagines of ambrosia beetles were obtained without luring agents. The research was conducted in 2007-2016. From the insect individuals identified on the grounds of morphological traits as T lineatum, T laeve, T domesticum and T signatum, originating from selected locations in Poland, 3-11 specimens were collected, for which genetic analyses were performed based on the COI gene fragments obtained by PCR. The research included tests for following paramcter: s sequence similarity, phylogenetic, evolutionary divergence and genetic. structure. As a result of research on the occurrence of ambrosia beetles in Poland, a total of 44207 individuals belonging to four species were collected: T lineatutn, 7: laeve, T domesticum and T signatum, whose share was respectively: 49.2%, 31.4%; 19.1% and 0.3%. In Poland, 1: laeve's imagines were found in 124 out of 143 examined sites. The presence of L reeve has been documented for the first time in 14 zoogeographic regions. This species was commonly found on study areas located from 118 to 929 m above sea level. In Poland the tree species attacked by T Mate include Pinus sylvestris L. and Picea abies (L) H. Karst. In Poland, T laeve as a host plant prefers sylvestris and reaches the highest population densities in the stands of this species. The work presents the exact morphological characteristics of T laeve and indicates the most important features that distinguish it from the other Trypodendrun spp. occurring in Poland. It has also been shown that the best results in the determination of species of the liypodendron genus, regardless of their sex, can be obtained using phylogenetic analysis based on a fragment of the COI gene.
