Abstract:
The objective of this study was to quantify how photoprotective mechanisms in the leaves of `Concord' grapevines (Vitis labruscana Bailey) respond to a range of iron (Fe) supply. Own-rooted, 1-year-old container-grown vines were fertigated twice weekly for 11 weeks with a complete nutrient solution containing 1, 10, 20, 50, or 100 μm Fe from ferric ethylenediamine di (o-hydroxyphenylacetic) acid (Fe-EDDHA). Leaf total Fe content did not increase in response to Fe supply; however, “active” Fe (extracted with 2,2′-dipyridyl) and chlorophyll (Chl) increased on a leaf area basis as applied Fe increased. At the lowest active Fe level, leaf absorptance and the efficiency of excitation transfer (Fv′/Fm′) was lower, and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was significantly greater. Photosystem II (PSII) quantum efficiency decreased curvilinearly, and the proportion of PSII reaction centers in the open state (qP) decreased linearly as active Fe content decreased. On a Chl basis, the xanthophyll cycle pool size [violaxanthin (V) + antheraxanthin (A) + zeaxanthin (Z)], lutein, and β-carotene increased curvilinearly as active Fe decreased, and neoxanthin (Neo) increased at the lowest Fe level. On a leaf area basis, as active Fe decreased, V+A+Z and β-carotene decreased curvilinearly, and lutein and Neo decreased linearly. At noon, conversion of V to A and Z increased as active Fe decreased. On a Chl basis, activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDAR), and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) increased curvilinearly, and glutathione reductase (GR) activity increased linearly as active Fe levels declined. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT), on a Chl basis, were relatively constant. On a leaf area basis, a decrease in active Fe increased SOD and MDAR activity, whereas APX, CAT, DHAR and GR activity decreased. Antioxidant metabolites ascorbate (AsA), dehydroascorbate (DAsA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) also increased in response to Fe limitation when expressed on a Chl basis, whereas on a leaf area basis AsA and DAsA decreased and GSH increased curvilinearly. The GSH:GSSG ratio increased as active Fe declined, whereas the AsA:DAsA ratio did not change. In conclusion, both photoprotective mechanisms, xanthophyll cycle-dependent thermal dissipation and the ascorbate-glutathione antioxidant system, are enhanced in response to Fe deficiency to cope with excess absorbed light. In a low soil pH tolerant species such as V. labruscana, the foliar antioxidant system was upregulated in response to excess absorbed light from Fe deficiency-induced chlorosis, and there was no evidence of an increase in oxidative stress from high rates of applied Fe-EDDHA.

Several studies have found differences between subjective preference ratings and objective performance measures. Bailey [Bailey 93] summarizes several, and argues for separate treatment of these concepts. Our results in a multifactor multivariate experiment support Bailey's contention, but adds a new dimension of concern: the use of concurrent versus retrospective subjective ratings. The presentation here will focus on the relationship of performance and concurrent versus retrospective preference ratings. Retrospective ratings may represent users' lasting impressions of a system after a trial use, but may not be good predictors of performance. Concurrent ratings of confidence of accuracy were found, in this study, to be better predictors performance. We offer recommendations about how to make the best use of these different evaluation measures, particularly when they differ.

Abstract:
When historian Axel Baiget and journalist Marta Trill began to investigate the consequences of the fascist bombings during the Spanish Civil War of the town of La Selva del Camp (Tarragona), they automatically thought of making a documentary. Por al cel (2015) was conceived as an audiovisual tale that was both oral and choral, in which witnesses would reconstruct their own experience without the intervention of Baiget and Trill’s voice-over. The present article analyzes the many explicit and implicit reticences that Baiget and Trill dealt with throughout the documentary’s filming. During that process, the authors reopened and explored some abandoned wartime bomb shelters. To reach some of those spaces was almost as complicated as accessing the accounts of many of the neighbors of la Selva who, from the very beginning, resisted participation in the documentary, refusing to revisit the buried collective/ conflictual memory. On the other hand, Por al cel allowed those who finally decided to participate to share their stories publicly for the first time, even though this format, based on a principle of non-intervention, opened the door for the emergence of lapses and reconstructions of the past.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper investigates how cant is used to represent the social margins in the Old Bailey Sessions Papers. Cant refers to the special vocabulary that is associated with and used by people living on the margins such as thieves and prostitutes. Little work has been conducted on the use of this language in courtroom texts. Using a historical pragmatic framework, evidence of the actual occurrence of cant as well as metalinguistic evidence was generated through lexical keyword searches in the Old Bailey Proceedings Online. Then the use of marginal vocabulary was examined more closely in extracts from the Sessions Papers using historical discourse analysis. This paper argues that cant is enregistered and that the courtroom recorder and the editor of the Session Papers reproduced the cant language to highlight and draw attention to the maliciousness and culpability of those who were accused in court. Linguistic techniques such as glossing and metalinguistic commentary were inserted to foreground the cant terms in the text. In addition, this historical discourse analysis sheds light on how the witnesses in the courtroom make strategic use of cant terms to portray the defendant in a negative light.

Note outil principal est le théorème de Pink sur la restriction aux strates de la compactification de Baily-Borel d'un système de coefficients sur la variété de Shimura. In this work, we calculate the trace of a power of the Frobenius endomorphism on the fibers of the intersection complex of the Baily-Borel compactification of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group over Q. Our main tool is Pink's theorem about the restriction to the strata of the Baily-Borel compactification of a local system on the Shimura variety. To use this theorem, we give a new construction of the intermediate extension of a pure perverse sheaf as a weight truncated of the full direct image. More generally, we are able to define analogs in positive characteristic of the weighted cohomology complexes introduced by Goresky, Harder and MacPherson

De la bonne qualité des initiatives organisationnelles dépend, pour une grande part, la dynamique économique d'un pays. La recherche est particulièrement centrée sur un indicateur toujours d'actualité, l'impact du système de crédit-bail sur la création de valeur, tant sur le plan micro que macroéconomique. La problématique est centrée sur le paradoxe de "création de valeurs" en temps de crise économique, en prenant l'exemple du Liban. La thèse s'articule autour d'une structure en 2 parties : La première partie concerne l'idée de richesse comme fondement de la croissance économique. Le crédit bail est considéré comme indicateur des nouvelles frontières de l'économie et de création de valeur. La deuxième partie présente les enjeux du crédit bail dans le secteur industriel libanais. En raison du faible volume de la pratique du crédit bail dans ce secteur, la thèse propose une vision prospective capable de gérer la mise à niveau des entreprises libanaises, dans le cadre du rapprochement euro-méditerranéen ou en préparation de l'intégration du processus de l'OMC. Cette partie expose également une étude effectuée auprès des industriels montrant leur degré de réactivité financière et leur capacité à relever les défis face à une situation économique en mutation.

La premiere partie de cette these consacree a l'etude du contrat de credit-bail dans le cadre de la procedure collective atteignant le locataire, s'attache a mettre en exergue la faiblesse du credit-bailleur cocontractant creancier. La demonstration est apportee par le constat de l'absence de maitrise du sort de son contrat. Il ne peut choisir de rompre la relation contractuelle en arguant de la situation de redressement ou de liquidation judiciaire de son partenaire. Il ne peut davantage s'opposer a la cession de son contrat au repreneur de l'entreprise debitrice. Les risques de non paiement de la creance anterieure au jugement d'ouverture de la procedure de redressement judiciaire du preneur sont grands. Meme si la solution merite des nuances, les garanties de paiement instituees au profit des creanciers posterieurs au jugement d'ouverture seront dans la tres grande generalite des cas, un "miroir aux alouettes". Le regime de l'incertude caracterise le paiement du credit-bailleur creancier. La deuxieme partie de la these a pour objet de mettre en evidence la force du credit-bailleur cocontractant proprietaire. Sa toute puissance est cependant soumise a la condition d'opposabilite de son droit de propriete. Depuis la loi du 10 juin 1994, cette derniere se resume a une publication reguliere de son contrat aupres du greffe competent, laquelle demeure cependant le talon d'achille du credit-bailleur. Une fois posee l'opposabilite de son droit de propriete, le credit-bailleur peut le mettre en oeuvre avec une souplesse certaine. Il apparait ainsi que la legislation du 25 janvier 1985, depuis la reforme du 10 juin 1994, ne contient pas de regles destinees a affaiblir la position du credit-bailleur proprietaire. En outre, le legislateur protege le credit-bailleur au jour du transfert de son droit de propriete, qu'il s'agisse de la levee d'option d'achat par le debiteur ou par le repreneur
The first part of this thesis dealing with the study of the contract of leasing concerning bankruptcy or winding-up emphasizes the weakness of leasers co-contracting creditors. The demonstration can be proved by the established fact that the control of his contract is missing. He cannot choose to break the relationships granted by contact, pleading his partner's bandruptcy or winding-up. He cannot either stand in opposition to the transfer of his contract to the buyers of his indebted firm. The risks of non-payment debits previous to the opening judgment of the buyer's bandruptcy or winding-up are great. Even if the solution deserves some touches, the established payment garanties to the benefit of creditors, subsequent to the opening judgment, will be, in most cases, a lark-mirror. The rule of unreliability characterizes the payment of the creditor leaser. The second part of this thesis put forward the powes of the leases co-contracting ownes. His overwhelming power is, however, submitted to the condition of opposability of his patent rights. Since the law of the 10th of june 94 this has been reduced as a regular publication of its contract to the record-office having juridiction, which, howeres, remains the weak spot of the leaser. Once his opposability right on ownerships has been laid down the leaser can carry it out with a certain adaptability. Moreover, the legislator protects the leaser from the daywhen his ownership right was transferred

L’étude porte sur les retombées économiques de la mine de Voisey’s Bay sur les conditions socioéconomiques des communautés de Rigolet, Makkovik, Hopedale, Nain et de Postville. Elle adopte une approche multidimensionnelle à la fois descriptive et comparative. Les données utilisées proviennent des recensements de la population de 1991, 1996, 2001 et de 2006 conduits par Statistique Canada. Elle utilise aussi les données de l’Enquête nationale auprès des ménages de 2011. Les données internes à la mine proviennent des Rapports de responsabilités sociales de la firme VBNC qui se charge d’exploiter la mine. Nous avons également en recours aux données des rapports du Gouvernement du Nunatsiavut depuis sa mise en place en 2005. Cette étude s’inscrit dans un contexte d’exploitation des ressources naturelles. Elle montre que, contrairement à des considérations voulant que celles-ci constituent une source de richesses, leurs effets sur les conditions socioéconomiques des communautés locales restent mitigés. Les firmes minières s’acharnent à maximiser leurs profits et les conditions de vie des communautés locales n’en bénéficient que partiellement. Pour notre étude, nous faisons l’hypothèse que cette mine ait eu de nombreuses retombées directes ou indirectes (emplois, achats de biens et services, taxes minières, investissements et redevances) et que celles-ci ont modifié les conditions de vie des communautés concernées. Nous avons opté pour une méthodologie basée sur un modèle de retombées économiques de la mine de Voisey’s Bay; un outil conçu avec l’inspiration de la grille d’évaluation des projets miniers, gaziers et pétroliers sur les conditions socioéconomiques de Paul Kishchuk. Ce modèle nous a permis d’analyser les effets de Voisey’s Bay sur la démographie, le marché du travail, la scolarité, le revenu et le logement. Les dimensions identifiées font état d’une légère amélioration sur les conditions de vie des communautés, bien que l’effet ne puisse pas être totalement attribué à la mine, étant donné le rôle important joué par le Gouvernement du Nunatsiavut depuis sa création.

La zone littorale abrite des écosystèmes à l’origine de productions primaires élevées et diversifiées, qui constituent la base de réseaux trophiques complexes. Parmi ces écosystèmes, les herbiers de phanérogames produisent de la matière généralement peu exploitée directement, qui contribue ainsi au réseau trophique détritique. Ces phanérogames sont par ailleurs le support de productions élevées d'épiphytes. Cette étude a été réalisée dans le but de vérifier si ces généralités s’appliquent au fonctionnement des herbiers intertidaux de Zostera noltii. Pour cela, les biomasses des différents compartiments de sources et de consommateurs potentiels ont été estimées, ainsi que leurs variations spatio-temporelles. Le devenir de la matière produite a été étudié à l’aide d’une approche multi-traceurs, basée sur le traçage isotopique naturel et l’étude des profils acides gras. Il a ainsi été démontré que les très faibles biomasses d’épiphytes font de ce compartiment une ressource négligeable et que, parmi la macrofaune, les brouteurs dominent largement (73 % de la biomasse macrofaunique). La méiofaune représente quant à elle 30 % de la biomasse totale des consommateurs benthiques. Le microphytobenthos s’est révélé être la ressource principale pour la majorité des espèces de la macrofaune benthique (déposivores, brouteurs) et de la méiofaune. La matière issue des phanérogames n’est quant à elle que très peu utilisée par les invertébrés et son devenir dans le réseau trophique reste mal défini. Cette étude montre donc le rôle mineur des épiphytes dans ce réseau trophique d’herbier intertidal, les invertébrés benthiques exploitant une autre ressource algale : le microphytobenthos
The littoral zone contains ecosystems featuring high and diversified primary production which constitute the base for complex food webs. Among the producers, seagrass beds produce matter which in general is poorly consumed, thus contributing to the detritus food web. Furthermore, seagrasses form a support for high epiphyte production. This work was carried out to verify these general patterns for the functioning of an intertidal Zostera noltii seagrass bed. Biomasses of different producer and of consumer compartments were estimated and their spatial and temporal variations assessed. The fate of the produced matter was studied by a multi-tracer method using natural isotope tracing and fatty acid profiling. It is shown that epiphyte biomass was low, thus comprising a negligible resource for consumers. Among the macrofaunal consumers, grazers dominated (73% of macrofaunal biomass). Conversely, the meiofauna represented 30% of the total biomass of benthic consumers. When epiphytes were lacking, microphytobenthos was the principal food resource for most of the macrobenthic species (deposit feeders, grazers). The seagrass itself is not much used by the invertebrate consumers and its fate in the food web remains poorly understood. In conclusion, the results demonstrate the minor role of epiphytes in the trophic web of this intertidal seagrass bed. The benthic invertebrates exploit another algal resource: the microphyobenthos

La présente thèse, consacrée à l’évaluation de l’impact d’une espèce invasive sur le fonctionnement d’un écosystème, présente une double originalité : d’une part, le choix d’une espèce indigène comme modèle biologique. Cette option, a priori paradoxale, conduit à un approfondissement de la réflexion sur la notion d’invasion biologique et débouche sur une définition de cette dernière commune aux espèces native et exotique. D’autre part, le recours à l’approche systémique. Basée sur une démarche résolument interdisciplinaire, cette approche s’est traduite par la prise en compte simultanée des trois catégories d’effets imputables aux espèces invasives envisagées dans le cadre conceptuel de Crooks (2002). L’étude, menée sur l’invasion des marais salés de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel par le chiendent maritime Elymus athericus Link montre qu’une seule espèce invasive peut altérer effectivement les trois aspects fondamentaux du fonctionnement d’un écosystème
This PhD dissertation, devoted to evaluate the impact of an invasive species on ecosystem functioning, presents two originalities: first, the choice of an indigenous species as biological model. This a priori paradoxical option allows us to further investigate the concept of biological invasion, and propose to include native and exotic species within the definition of invasive species. Second, a systemic approach. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, this research took into account simultaneously the three components of effects caused by invasive species described in the conceptual framework of Crooks (2002). This study, which deals with the invasion of salt marshes of the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay by the sea couch grass Elymus athericus Link, demonstrates that a single invasive species can significantly alter three fundamental functions of an ecosystem

Abstract:
Cette thèse avait pour objectif d’évaluer le potentiel des sédiments littoraux à enregistrer les changements environnementaux. Trois sites d’études ont été choisis sur la côte atlantique française: la flèche sableuse de la Pointe d’Arçay pour l’enregistrement du climat de la houle ; la Baie de Marennes-Oléron et le Bassin d’Arcachon pour la discrimination des nombreux forçages contrôlant le comblement des estuaires. La Pointe d’Arçay est une flèche sableuse à « crochons » qui présente un taux d’allongement moyen de 26 m/an. Les approches géomorphologiques et de modélisation de la houle depuis 1979 ont mis en évidence que les houles les plus énergétiques favoriseraient un fort allongement de la flèche alors que les houles moins énergétiques favoriseraient un faible gain sédimentaire et un recourbement de l’extrémité de la flèche. Ce mécanisme semble expliquer le développement successif des crochons le long de la flèche depuis la deuxième moitié du 20ème siècle. La Baie de Marennes-Oléron et du Bassin d’Arcachon ont été analysés séparément, puis comparés, grâce à deux approches complémentaires, la stratigraphie (sismique THR et carottages) et les évolutions morphologiques séculaires. Le comblement de la Baie de Marennes-Oléron est rapide depuis le 19ème siècle et est complexe depuis 8 000 ans BP en raison des multiples forçages qui le contrôlent. Le comblement du Bassin d’Arcachon a un budget équilibré depuis le 19ème siècle et semble principalement contrôlé par sa fermeture partielle depuis 2500 ans BP. Les nombreuses différences observées entre ces deux environnements estuariens montrent les importances relatives des forçages locaux comme la morphologie du substratum, la marée, la houle, les apports sédimentaires et l’impact de l’homme
The purpose of this PhD thesis was to evaluate the potential of coastal sediment in recording environmental changes. With this aim in view, three coastal environments have been chosen along the French Atlantic coast: the Arçay sandspit for past wave climate record; the Marennes-Oléron Bay and Arcachon Lagoon to decipher among the multiple forcing parameters controlling estuaries sediment-fill. The Arçay Spit is a compound spit displaying an elongation mean rate of 26 m. Yr-1. Morphological and wave modeling approaches since 1979, show that energetic swells seem to cause massive sand accumulation and spit elongation, whereas less energetic swells appear to be responsible for small sand accumulation and spit curvature. Such mechanism seems to be responsible of the successive hook ridges accretion observed along the Arçay Spit since the second half of the 20th century. The Marennes-Oléron Bay and Arcachon Lagoon have been successively analyzed and compared following a combination of VHR seismic, sediment cores and historical and present-day bathymetries. The sediment-fill of the Marennes-Oléron Bay is rapid since the 19° century and complex since 8000 yrs BP, due to multiple forcing parameters. The sediment-fill of the Arachon Lagoon displays a balanced budget since the 19th century and seems to be mainly controlled by the partial closure of this lagoon since 2500 yrs BP. Numerous differences observed in those two estuarine environments give insight on relative influence of local forcing parameters including bedrock morphology, tide, waves, sediment supply and human impact

AbstractThe exit of Baise ship lift on the Right River is only about 700 m away from Dongsun Hydropower Station. Its dispatching operation, especially the unsteady flow, has a direct impact on the navigable water flow conditions of the approach channel gate area and river channel downstream of the Baise ship lift. According to some characteristics of Baise Junction and Dongsun Junction and the measured topography of Baoai River, a plane two-dimensional numerical model of the research river section is constructed, and the water flow changes in the mouth area under different working conditions are simulated and calculated. The research results show that the safety of navigation in the entrance area can be guaranteed from two aspects: optimizing the operation mode of the Baise and Dongsun cascade hydropower stations, and rationally formulating the downstream ship navigation management mode. Under the operating conditions of the four units of Baise Power Station, it is recommended that the ship wait for 0.5 h after the two units in Dongsun are started, so as to avoid the maximum water level increase period in the first half hour.

AbstractThe docking between ship lift chamber and upstream/downstream is an important link in the whole process of ship lift operation. The wave and flow movement generated by the hub operating downstream can easily lead to the failure of ship lift docking or ship grounding. To deal with the problem of large amplitude and high frequency of water level fluctuations downstream of Baise ship lift, an auxiliary lock is set up at the lower lock head of the ship lift. The extreme lift height of Baise auxiliary lock is 5.64 m with a two-way hydraulic head, and the size of the chamber is large, therefore it is faced with the problems of water filling/emptying efficiency and ship navigation safety. In this paper, a kind of water F/E system combining water filling under the gate and grid energy dissipation type is designed, and a scale of 1:30 Baise auxiliary lock chamber physical model and three-dimensional mathematical model are established. The berthing conditions of ships in the auxiliary lock under different water level variations and lock gate operation modes are analyzed. Besides the hydraulic characteristics of the lock filling/emptying system are measured. The operation mode of lock gate under different water level variations is recommended.

AbstractUsually the ship lock has the characteristics of high water head and large variation of navigable water level in mountainous area. It is suitable to construct the water-saving ship lock, which can not only save the water consumption but also reduce the working head of each stage. Therefore, it is also beneficial to solve the hydraulic problems of high head ship lock. Taking Baise ship lock as an example of ship locks for navigation-power junctions in mountainous river, we studied the water saving layout scheme and suggested that a high water saving pool and a low one should be set on both sides of the lock chamber. And each pool adopts a new type of trapezoidal transverse section in order to make full use of the topographic conditions of the project and reduce the excavation volume. The water level classification of water-saving ship lock is calculated and analyzed. The elevations of the water saving pools are determined. The layout of the filling and emptying system of the water-saving ship lock is put forward. The hydraulic characteristic indexes, the pressures of the culverts near the valves and the ship berthing conditions in lock chamber under different operating conditions of the water-saving ship lock are obtained through physical model research. Furthermore, the opening and closing modes of the valves are recommended. The results show that the water saving scheme of Baise ship lock is reasonable and feasible in hydraulics.

A small, blind-tooled volume sits on a table covered in green baize: one clasp is open, the other is closed; and a slip of paper emerges from it reading Veritas odium parit (truth breeds hatred). This detail occurs in the foreground of a portrait by Hans Holbein of a young man identified as the Cologne patrician Hermann von Wedigh III (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). A study of the physical features of the book and of the history of the brief text — actually an ancient and then Erasmian adage — leads to a new interpretation of the painting in the context of humanist friendship. The book is seen to be a multivalent simile for the work of art authored by the artist as well as for the sitter himself, raising questions about the implications for these of a medium that can be opened and closed. The half-open condition of the book is understood to reflect the complementary pressures of openness and closedness, accessibility and intimacy, that characterized the Renaissance republic of letters.

AbstractWe present a cognitively grounded analysis of the pattern of variation that underlies the ​use of two aspectual markers in Spanish (the Simple-Present marker, Ana baila ‘Ana dances’, and the Present-Progressive marker, Ana está bailando ‘Ana is dancing’) when they express an event-in-progress reading. This analysis is centered around one fundamental communicative goal, which we term perspectivealignment: the bringing of the hearer’s perspective closer to that of the speaker. Perspective alignment optimizes the tension between two nonlinguistic constraints: Theory of Mind, which gives rise to linguisticexpressivity, and Common Ground, which gives rise to linguisticeconomy. We propose that, linguistically, perspectivealignment capitalizes on lexicalized meanings, such as the progressive meaning, that can bring the hearer to the “here and now”. In Spanish, progressive meaning can be conveyed with the Present-Progressive marker regardless of context. By contrast, if the Simple-Present marker is used for that purpose, it must be in a context of shared perceptual access between speaker and hearer; precisely, a condition that establishes perspectivealignment non-linguistically. Support for this analysis comes from a previously observed yet unexplained pattern of contextually-determined variation for the use of the Simple-Present marker in Iberian and Rioplatense (vs. Mexican) Spanish—in contrast to the preference across all three varieties for the use of the Present-Progressive marker—to express an event-in-progress reading.

AbstractBaise Water Conservancy Project is the second cascade in the Yujiang River planning, and its navigation facilities are one of the key projects to get through Yunnan and Guizhou. The exit of the downstream approach channel of the navigation facilities of the Baise Water Conservancy Project is located about 700 m downstream of the Dongsun Hydropower Station, so the operation of Dongsun Hydropower Station has a direct impact on the navigation flow condition of the approach channel. In addition, the topography of the river also has an obvious influence on the navigation conditions at the entrance area of the approach channel. So, based on the overall hydraulic model with a scale of 1:80 and the self-navigating ship simulation test, the navigation flow conditions at the entrance area of the approach channel and the characteristics of the ship entering and exiting the ship lock were studied. The test results show that: (1) Under the condition that the discharge of Dongsun Hydropower Station is less than1500 m3/s at full power, the flow pattern in the downstream channel of the hydropower station and the entrance area of the approach channel is relatively smooth. The flow pattern, velocity and wave height can meet the specification requirements. The maximum rudder angle and drift angle at the entrance area of the approach channel do not exceed the requirements, and the ship can enter and exit the downstream approach channel smoothly; (2) The maximum navigation discharge of 1700 m3/s can be achieved by adjusting the route of the connecting section of the downstream approach channel to the left bank and dredging the two convex points on the right bank of the entrance area of the downstream approach channel.

Chapter Four examines the specifically black urban counterculture associated with the so-called Black Rio movement. Black Rio was a cultural phenomenon that brought together predominantly black, working-class youth from Rio’s north zone for dance parties, called bailes soul featuring recorded music from the United States. The author discusses in particular the work of Dom Filó, a black activist and baile soul promoter. At the same time, local Brazilian artists, like Tim Maia and Gerson King, forged a distinctly Brazilian soul music sung in Portuguese. Largely dismissed by critics as a passing fad, the Black Rio movement can be understood as a cultural response to dominant racial discourse, which celebrated Brazil as a racially democratic mestiço nation largely free from racism. Though not overtly or stridently political, the Black Rio movement created conditions for Afro-Brazilian youth to affirm a distinct ethnic identity. This chapter places these black cultural movements in the context of countercultural discourse, seeking to explore points of dialogue and discord with other social movements.

Creep properties for stress mitigation simulation in post weld heat treatment (PWHT) were studied. Materials tested in this study were both deposited metal and base metal of a nickel base alloy, an austenitic stainless steel, and a low alloy steel. First, creep tests were conducted at 625 °C, which is a holding temperature in PWHT of a low alloy steel. Test specimens were subjected to certain stress and the amount of creep strain was measured. A Norton-Bailey law model was used to simulate the amount of creep strain. Material parameters for the Norton-Bailey law model were determined from the creep strain measurement data. Stress relaxation tests were also conducted at 625 °C. Test specimens were subjected to a constant total strain and stress relaxation was measured. The experimentally measured stress relaxation data were calculated using the Norton-Bailey law model with the material parameters determined from the creep tests. The calculation data showed good agreement with the experiment data. Accordingly, the material parameters determined in this study can be considered valid.

P91-type steel is widely used for the high-temperature pipe work components in advanced power plants. The creep behavior of the P91-type steel has been studied by many researchers during the past years. Since it is well known that the creep behavior of P91-type steel cannot be satisfactorily described by a simple, Arrhenius-type, power-law constitutive model. While Norton-Bailey creep is a deviatoric temperature-dependent creep model, furbished with a time-hardening creep model, which is the most common model for modeling primary and secondary creep together, and Kachanov-Rabotnov creep damage theory described with Norton creep model can be used to model tertiary creep. Both of them based on Norton creep constitutive equation. In this paper, based on the Norton-Bailey creep law and Kachanov-Rabotnov creep damage theory, a new combined constitutive model has been developed, in which the creep and damage function are both considered as nonlinear variables. The damage parameters in the model have clear physical meaning and can be determined from the benchmark experiment. The results indicated that this combined damage model was applicable to describe the full damage evolution for P91-type steel.

Abstract The paper examines new horizontal drift-flux correlations for their ability to accurately model phase flow rates and pressure drops in horizontal and undulating wells that are part of a Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) field operation. Pressure profiles within each well correlate to the overall performance of the pair. SAGD is a low-pressure process that is sensitive to reservoir heterogeneity and other factors, hence accurate simulation of in situ wellbore pressures is critical for both mitigating uneven steam chamber evolution and optimizing wellbore design and operation. Recently published horizontal drift-flux correlations have been implemented in a commercial thermal reservoir simulator with a multi-segment well model. Valid for horizontally drilled wells with undulations, they complement previously reported drift-flux models developed for vertical and inclined wells down to approximately 5 degrees from horizontal. The formulation of these correlations has a high degree of nonlinearity. These models are tested in simulations of SAGD field operations. First, an overview of drift-flux models is discussed. This differentiates those based on vertical flow with gravity segregation to those that model horizontal flow with stratified and slug flow regimes. Second, the most recent and significant drift-flux correlation by Bailey et al. (2018, and hereafter referred to as Bailey-Tang-Stone) was robustly designed to be used in the well model of a reservoir simulator, can handle all inclination angles and was optimized to experimental data from the largest available databases to date. This and earlier drift-flux models are reviewed as to their strengths and weaknesses. Third, governing equations and implementation details are given of the Bailey-Tang-Stone model. Fourth, six case studies are presented that illustrate homogeneous and drift-flux flow model differences for various well scenarios.

From such a perspective, the prevalence of the 20/40 visual acuity criterion for unrestricted driver licensure seems understandable (e.g., Bailey & Sheedy, 1988). A critical question, however, is whether this, or any of the existing vision standards for licensure, can be defended by reference to empirical evidence. Answers to such questions will become increasingly important as an increasing proportion of the population fails to meet existing standards due to normal aging and/or age-related ocular disorder.

This paper presents the application of selected models in order to determine the creep behavior of glued laminated timber beams (glulam) made from European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) and loaded with a constant force during a period of three months. The selected models are the 'power law', Norton-Bailey, and Burger's model. The investigations were performed in the Construction Laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy in Split. Four-point bending tests were performed on glulam beams with an applied load level of 30% of the maximum force obtained from previously conducted short-term tests. The comparison was made between the coefficients of determination obtained in Matlab for each model. Small specimen creep test techniques have been widely applied in the creep properties assessment of materials for the equipment in-service. In order to acquire the creep data accurately and conveniently, the creep test method with small cantilever beam specimens is proposed. On the basis of Norton-Bailey creep law, analytical creep model for the cantilever beam specimen is derived. With this model, the load can be converted to equivalent uniaxial stress and the displacement rate can be converted to equivalent uniaxial strain rate. The creep properties of Cr-Mo steel are assessed by the cantilever beam specimens creep tests. And the creep parameters are evaluated, which are compared to the uniaxial creep parameters. The results show that parameters obtained from the cantilever beam tests correspond reasonably well with those from uniaxial tests. It proves that the primary and secondary creep properties can be assessed by the cantilever beam specimen tests.

Thermal methods consist of measuring thermal gradient and satellite data, which can be used to determine the Earth's surface temperature and thermal inertia of surficial materials, of thermal infrared radiation emitted at the Earth's surface. Thermal gradient measuring, with a knowledge of the thermal conductivity provides a measure of heat flow. Conditions that may increase or decrease and heat flow are influenced by hydrologic, topographic factors and anomalous thermal conductivity. Also, oxidation of sulphide bodies in-place or on waste deposits, if sufficiently rapid, can generate thermal anomalies, which can provide a measure of the amount of metal being released to the environment. The geothermal gradient on the territory of Romania, the increase of the temperature with the depth, has an average value of 2.5°-3°C/100m, which corresponds to a temperature of 100° C at 3000 m deep. There are many areas where the value of the geothermal gradient differs considerably from this average. For example, in areas where the rock plate suffered rapid dips and the basin was filled with sediment "very young "from a geological point of view, the geothermal gradient may be less than 1° C/100m. On the other hand, in other geothermal areas the gradient exceeds much this average. These areas are true underground thermal reservoirs of potentially high geothermal energy which under certain favourable conditions can be exploited to serve heating installations and domestic hot water systems. The geothermal prospecting for the entire territory of Romania, carried out by temperature measurements allowed the development of geothermal maps, highlighting the temperature distribution at different depths. Geophysical data obtained through various methods and geophysical modelling provide generalized and non-unique solutions to the geometry of underground geological relations as well as to the physical characteristics of different formations. The non-uniqueness of these models (solutions to the direct problem) arises from the impossibility of knowing the boundary conditions between different strata, which together with the propagation equations of the different fields (depending on the geophysical method used for the investigation of the basement) form the systems that offer the solutions of the model

The mechanical properties of collagenous tissues are known to depend on a wide variety of factors, such as the type of tissue and the composition of its extracellular matrix. Relating mechanical roles to individual matrix components in such a complex system is difficult, if not impossible. However, as collagen is the main load bearing component in connective tissues, the relation between collagen and tissue biomechanics has been studied extensively in various types of tissues. The type of collagen, the amount and type of inter- and intramolecular covalent cross-links and collagen fibril morphology are involved in the tissues mechanical behavior (Beekman et al., 1997; Parry et al., 1978; Avery and Bailey, 2005). From literature it is known that the the collagen fibril diameter distribution can be directly related to the mechanical properties of the tissue. In particular, the diameter distribution of collagen fibrils is largely determined by the tissues requirement for tensile strength and elasticity (Parry et al., 1978).

Abstract. Crystal plasticity models are promising numerical analysis methods for predicting and evaluating material forming processes. In crystal plasticity analyses, the dislocation density model, often based on the Bailey-Hirsch equation, is employed to represent the work hardening behavior of metallic materials. The dislocation strengthening coefficient is a proportional factor between the square root of dislocation density with the slip resistance. Therefore, the appropariate determination of the dislocation strengthening coefficient is crucial to perform reliable material forming analyses using crystal plasticity models. Previously, dislocation strengthening coefficients have been determined using dislocation dynamics simulations. However, dislocation dynamics simulations cannot accurately account for elastic anisotropy due to its computational cost. To address this limitation, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations to determine dislocation strengthening coefficient in bcc iron. Molecular dynamics simulations of dislocation-dislocation interaction analysis can be expected to determine the dislocation strengthening coefficient accurately, including the effects of elastic anisotropy of metallic materials.

Abstract:
House flies (Muscadomestica) are global pests of animal agriculture, causing major annoyance, carrying pathogens among production facilities and humans and thus have profound impacts on animal comfort and productivity. Successful fly control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that includes elements of manure management, mass trapping, biological control, and selective insecticide use. Insecticidal control of house flies has become increasingly difficult due to the rapidity with which resistance develops, even to new active ingredients. Global climate change poses additional challenges, as the efficacy of natural enemies is uncertain under the higher temperatures that are predicted to become more commonplace in the future. The two major objectives of this research project were: 1) to develop a cost-effective autodissemination application method of Pyriproxifen (PPF), an insect growth regulator, for controlling house flies; 2) to study the effect of increasing temperatures on the interactions between house flies and their principal natural enemies. First, we collected several wild house fly populations in both countries and established that most of them are susceptible to PPF, although one population in each country showed initial signs of PPF-resistance. An important finding is that the efficacy of PPF is substantially reduced when applied in cows’ manure. We also found that PPF is compatible with several common species of parasitoids that attack the house fly, thus PPF can be used in IPM programs. Next, we tried to develop “baited stations” in which house flies will collect PPF on their bodies and then deliver and deposit it in their oviposition sites (= autodissemination). The concept showed potential in lab experiments and in outdoor cages trials, but under field conditions the station models we tested were not effective enough. We thus tested a somewhat different approach – to actively release a small proportion of PPF-treated flies. This approach showed positive results in laboratory experiments and awaits further field experiments. On the second topic, we performed two experimental sets: 1) we collected house flies and their parasitoids from hot temperature and mild temperature areas in both countries and, by measuring some fitness parameters we tested whether the ones collected from hot areas are better adapted to BARD Report - Project 4701 Page 2 of 16 heat. The results showed very little differences between the populations, both of flies and parasitoids. 2) A “fast evolution” experiment, in which we reared house flies for 20 generations under increasing temperatures. Also here, we found no evidence for heat adaptation. In summary, pyriproxyfen proved to be a highly effective insect growth regulator for house flies that is compatible with it’s natural enemies. Although our autodissemination stations yielded disappointing results, we documented the proportion of flies in a population that must be exposed to PPF to achieve effective fly control. Both the flies and their principal parasitoids show no evidence for local adaptation to high temperatures. This is an encouraging finding for biological control, as our hypothesis was that the fly would be adapting faster to high temperatures than the parasitoids. BARD Report - Project 4701 Page 3 of 16

Abstract:
The Indiana Dunes (comprised of 15 geographic units (see Figure 1) which include Indiana Dunes National Park, Dunes State Park, and adjacent Shirley Heinze Land Trust properties) are remarkable in the Midwest and Great Lakes region for the vascular plant diversity, with an astounding 1,212 native plant species in an area of approximately 16,000 acres! This high plant diversity is the result of the interactions among postglacial migrations, the variety of soil substrates, moisture conditions, topography, successional gradients, ?re regimes, proximity to Lake Michigan, and light levels. This richness is all the more signi?cant given the past human alterations of the landscape resulting from logging; conversion to agriculture; construction of transportation corridors, industrial sites, and residential communities; ?re suppression; land abandonment; and exotic species invasions. Despite these impacts, multiple natural areas supporting native vegetation persist. Thus, each of the 15 units of the Indiana Dunes presents up to eight subunits varying in human disturbance and consequently in ?oristic richness. Of the most signi?cant units of the park in terms of number of native species, Cowles Dunes and the Dunes State Park stand out from all the other units, with 786 and 686 native species, respectively. The next highest ranked units for numbers of native species include Keiser (630), Furnessville (574), Miller Woods (551), and Hoosier Prairie (542). The unit with lowest plant richness is Heron Rookery (220), with increasing richness in progression from Calumet Prairie (320), Hobart Prairie Grove (368), to Pinhook Bog (380). Signi?cant natural areas, retaining native vegetation composition and structure, include Cowles Bog (Cowles Dunes Unit), Howes Prairie (Cowles Dunes), Dunes Nature Preserve (Dunes State Park), Dunes Prairie Nature Preserve (Dunes State Park), Pinhook Bog, Furnessville Woods (Furnessville), Miller Woods, Inland Marsh, and Mnoke Prairie (Bailly). Wilhelm (1990) recorded a total of 1,131 native plant species for the ?ora of the Indiana Dunes. This was similar to the 1,132 species recorded by the National Park Service (2014) for the Indiana Dunes. Based on the nomenclature of Swink and Wilhelm (1994), Indiana Dunes National Park has 1,206 native plant species. If we include native varieties and hybrids, the total increases to 1,244 taxa. Based on the nomenclature used for this report?the Flora of North America (FNA 2022), and the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS 2022)?Indiana Dunes National Park houses 1,206 native vascular plant species. As of this writing (2020), the Indiana Dunes is home to 37% of the species of conservation concern in Indiana (241 out of 624 Indiana-listed species): state extirpated = 10 species, state endangered = 75, and state threatened = 100. Thus, 4% of the state-listed species in the Indiana Dunes are extirpated, 31% endangered, and 41% threatened. Watch list and rare categories have been eliminated. Twenty-nine species once documented from the Indiana Dunes may be extirpated because they have not been seen since 2001. Eleven have not been seen since 1930 and 15 since 1978. If we exclude these species, then there would be a total of 1,183 species native to the Indiana Dunes. Many of these are cryptic in their life history or diminutive, and thus are di?cult to ?nd. Looking at the growth form of native plants, <1% (nine species) are clubmosses, 3% (37) are ferns, 8% (297) are grasses and sedges, 56% (682) are forbs or herbs, 1% (16) are herbaceous vines, <1% (7) are subshrubs (woody plants of herbaceous stature), 5% (60) are shrubs, 1% (11) are lianas (woody vines), and 8% (93) are trees. Of the 332 exotic species (species introduced from outside North America), 65% (219 species) are forbs such as garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), 15% (50 species) are graminoids such as phragmites (Phragmites australis ssp. australis), 2% (seven species) are vines such as ?eld bindweed (Convulvulus arvensis), <1% (two species) are subshrubs such as Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis), 8% (28 species) are shrubs such as Asian bush honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.), 1% (three species) are lianas such as oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), and 8% (23 species) are trees such as tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissimus). Of the 85 adventive species, native species that have invaded from elsewhere in North America, 14% (11 species) are graminoids such as broom sedge (Andropogon virginicus), 57% (48 species) are forbs such as fall phlox (Phlox paniculata), 5% (six species) are shrubs such as Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus), 3% (two species) are subshrubs such as holly leaved barberry (Berberis repens), 1% (one species) is a liana (trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans), 3% two species) are herbaceous vines such as tall morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea), and 17% (15 species) are trees such as American holly (Ilex opaca). A total of 436 species were found to be ?special? based on political rankings (federal and state-listed threatened and endangered species), species with charismatic ?owers, and those that are locally rare.

Recent books and articles have analyzed the causes of the global financial and economic crisis of 2007-09. Yet little attention has been paid to the quality of leadership in organizations that were at the epicentre of the storm, were victims of it, avoided it or even prospered from it. In the summer of 2009 a multi-disciplinary group of Ivey faculty decided to look at the leadership dimensions of the recent financial and economic crisis. We started by writing a working paper that laid out our preliminary views. We then engaged more than 300 business, public sector and not-for-profit leaders in small and large groups, as individuals and collectives, to get their reaction to this paper and, more generally, to discuss te role that organizational leadership played before, during and after the crisis. We examined leadership not just in the financial sector but also in many other public and private sector organizations that were affected by the crisis. In a sense, we were putting leadership on trial. Our aim in doing this was not to identify and assign blame. Rather, we examined leadership during this critical period in recent history to learn what we could, and use the learning to improve practice in leadership today and the development of next generation leaders. As we analyzed the role of leadership in this crisis we were faced with one major question: "Would better leadership have made a difference?" Our answer is unequivocal: "Yes!" We recognize that many people could argue it is unfair to criticize leaders whose decisions were based on their knowledge of the situation at the time and which only eventually, with the aid of 20/20 hindsight proved bad. We respect this view but we disagree with it. Some business and public sector leaders predicted better than others the bursting of the housing bubble and financial markets turmoil, positioned their organizations to avoid problems, and coped with them skillfully. Their organizations were not badly damaged by the crisis and some even prospered. Some governments and regulatory agencies' control and monitoring systems were superior to those in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Spain, Iceland and other countries that had to bail out their banks and other industries. Our evidence supports the conclusion that these companies, these agencies, these governments and these countries had better leadership. Good leadership mattered then and good leadership will matter in the future. We are presenting our conclusions about what good leadership involves in the form of a public statement of principles - a manifesto that addresses what good leaders do, who they are, and how they can be developed in organizations.
