Dans cette thèse nous ajustons la phase d’isolant de Mott du BaCoS2, un modèle multiorbital pour l’étude des corrélations électroniques. Nous avons développer une nouvelle technique de self-flux afin de produire des cristaux de qualité et de taille supérieures. Puis nous avons confirmé une phase stable orthorhombique Cmma à l’ambiante où la distorsion orthorhombique est concomitante à l’établissement d’un ordre AFM de longue portée. Ensuite, nous avons exploré la possibilité d’induire un état métallique dans du BaCoS2 via pression chimique et dopage électronique comme paramètres de contrôle. Pour cela, nous avons appliqué des techniques HP pour synthétiser des échantillons de Ba1−xSrxCoS2 et Ba1−xKxCoS2 avec x allant jusqu’à 0,07. On s’attend à ce que la substitution partielle du Ba par du Sr ou du K induise de la pression chimique ou du dopage de trous respectivement, favorisant ainsi une phase métallique dans les deux casIn this thesis we tune the Mott insulating phase of BaCoS2, a playground for the study of electronic correlations in a multiorbital system. We first developed a novel self-flux technique to grow single crystals of improved quality and size. We then confirmed a stable orthorhombic Cmma phase at ambient conditions where the orthorhombic distortion is concomitant to a long-range AFM order, suggesting a scenario of orbital ordering that stabilises this order. Next, we explored the possibility of inducing a metallic state in BaCoS2 using chemical pressure and electronic doping as control parameters. For this goal, we successfully applied HP technique to the synthesis of Ba1−xSrxCoS2 and Ba1−xKxCoS2 samples with x up to 0.07. The partial substitution of Ba for Sr or K is expected to produce chemical pressure or hole-doping, respectively, thus favouring a metallic phase in both cases. We find that both substitutions induce similar structural changes, and a full suppression of the orthorhombic distortion and of the AFM order. However, no indication of metallic properties is found in the Ba1−xSrxCoS2 samples. However, a sizeable value of Sommerfeld coefficient,γ= 5.7mJ mol−1K−2 is found at 7% of K-substitution suggesting a metallic state induced by hole doping

The study consists of a psychobiography of the British artist, Francis Bacon (1909-1992). Psychobiography employs a qualitative approach to understanding the life story of an individual through the lens of psychological theory. It is typically dedicated to the lives of well-known or enigmatic people and covers the person’s entire lifespan. For this study the analytical theory of Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) is used to explore and describe Bacon’s life and personality through concepts relating to personality functioning, history, mythology, anthropology, symbology and religion. Francis Bacon has captured the imagination of the art world for many years - especially where it is felt that the figure-subject is still the highest form of art - and his reputation among the foremost of English painters is assured. Coupled with his artistic output is a life full of curiosity, eccentricity and controversy. This alone would qualify him as a suitable subject for a study such as this, but his extraordinary oeuvre of painting hugely adds to his attractiveness to the psychological researcher. To ensure an accurate description of Bacon’s life, extensive data is examined using Alexander’s (1988) model of identifying salient themes. The study considers the nature and methodology of psychobiography, the theories of Jung, the life of Francis Bacon and then sythesises relevant material in a psychological profile. The findings of this study indicate that Bacon’s intense, creative and unorthodox life of genius fully justifies the research and provides an example of how a theory that is flexible can be an appropriate means of understanding complicated personalities. Jung’s description of the evolution of the personality allows for applicability and coherence, while at the same time accomodating even the most maverick of non-conventional lives.

B cell defects in HIV-1 infection are characterised by increased frequency of immature cell subsets, loss of memory cells, and hypergammaglobulinemia. There is increasing evidence that the capacity of B cells to secrete cytokines (IL-10) or express proteins (Bach2), may inhibit the T cell inflammatory response, which is believed to contribute to progressive immune deficiency in HIV-1. The aims were to determine if HIV-1 affects the capacity of B cells to express IL-10, TNF-α, and Bach2, and if alterations in cytokines and Bach2 expression were linked to T cell activation. An increase in immature B cell subsets and plasmablasts was found in HIV-1+ individuals, and was reversed by anti-retroviral therapy (ART). B cell proliferation and activation markers were increased in ART naïve individuals. However, TLR, T cell independent and dependent stimulation failed to increase expression of the co-stimulatory molecules, CD80 and CD86, or immunoglobulin synthesis, compared to healthy controls and HIV-1 patients on ART. No difference in the capacity of B cells to secrete IL-10 and TNF-α was noted in the study groups, and there was no association with markers of T cell activation. The results of flow cytometric Bach2 staining were unreliable. Analysis of B cell phenotype and function was undertaken in a patient with a history of chest infections and diarrhoea, and a heterozygous mutation in Bach2, c.T71C, was detected using whole exome sequencing. The patient did not have class-switched memory B cells, and decreased synthesis of immunoglobulins and cytokines. The immune findings supported the clinical phenotype of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), which was confirmed by genetic correction experiments conducted by collaborators in the USA. In conclusion, HIV-1+ ART naïve patients retain the capacity to secrete cytokines despite a reduction in immunoglobulin synthesis. Mutation in Bach2 affects B cell maturation and function, and is implicated in the development of CVID.

Während die Bestechung und Bestechlichkeit von, in öffentlichen Krankenhäusern angestellten Ärzten, als Folge des „Herzklappenskandals“ und der darauf beruhenden Reform des Korruptionsstrafrechts bereits seit 1997 nach den §§ 331 ff. StGB strafbar sind, unterfielen niedergelassene Vertragsärzte auch nach der Rechtsprechung des Großen Strafsenats bis zum Inkrafttreten der §§ 299a ff. StGB am 04.06.2016 nicht den Korruptionsdelikten. Thematisch damit verbunden war und ist die Frage, ob Vorteilsgewährungspraktiken in diesem Bereich vom Tatbestand der Untreue erfasst sein könnten. Ihrer Beantwortung dient der erste Teil der Arbeit. Der zweite Teil fokussiert die Relevanz der Korruptionsvorschriften für das gewählte Arbeitsthema. Die Einbettung der Gesamtthematik in den Kontext der Korruptionsdelikte führt die Ausgangsbetrachtungen zur Untreue fort und ergänzt diese durch eine Bewertung nach den neuen Gesetzesregelungen.
Das gewählte Arbeitsthema zeigt, wie wesentlich die Beschäftigung mit den relevanten Normen des Rechts der Gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung für die strafrechtlichen Bewertungen in diesem Bereich ist. Dies gilt umso mehr, wenn mit sozial- und beziehungsweise oder berufsrechtlichen Verstößen strafrechtliche Konsequenzen einhergehen und die fehlerhafte Anwendung der einschlägigen Rechtsnormen anderer Rechtsbereiche zwangsläufig auch zu falschen strafrechtlichen Schlussfolgerungen führt.
Dieser Kritik sieht sich auch die Rechtsprechung des Bundesgerichtshofes zur sogenannten Vertragsarztuntreue ausgesetzt. Auch hier wurden die Besonderheiten des Sozialversicherungsrechts nicht mit der notwendigen Sorgfalt eruiert und stattdessen eine - seit mehreren Jahren - nicht mehr vertretene Rechtsprechung des Bundessozialgerichts zur Grundlage der strafrechtlichen Bewertungen gemacht. Dass dies weder den Anforderungen des Bundesverfassungsgerichts entspricht, noch mit den sozial- und strafrechtlichen Vorgaben vereinbar ist, zeigen die Ausführungen der Arbeit.
In der Form eines kritischen Ausblicks werden abschließend, die Grenzen zulässiger verordnungsbezogener Vergütungen durch die Krankenkassen aufgezeigt und deren strafrechtliche Relevanz eingeordnet. Letzteres erfolgt am Beispiel eines Vertrags zur Förderung sog. biosimilarer Arzneimittel durch die Zahlung einer prozentualen Einsparbeteiligung als Gegenleistung für deren bevorzugte Verordnung. Die Konstellation verdeutlicht, dass auch die monetäre Einflussnahme der Krankenkassen auf das Verordnungsverhalten der Vertragsärzte strafrechtsrelevante Wirkung haben kann, wenn sie zu unberechtigten Wettbewerbsverzerrungen führt.As a consequence of the so-called “heart valve scandal”, and the reform of the German criminal law on corruption that followed in the wake of the scandal, it has been a criminal offence under sections 331 et seqq. of the German Criminal Code [Strafgesetzbuch – StGB] since 1997 to give bribes to medical practitioners employed in public hospitals, or for such medical practitioners to take bribes. However, until sections 299a et seqq. StGB entered into force on 4 June 2016, acts committed by medical practitioners in private practices were not deemed to be corruption offences under the Criminal Code. This was also affirmed by the case-law of the Grand Criminal Panel of the German Federal Court of Justice [Großer Senat für Strafsachen]. A topic that has been repeatedly discussed in connection with the aforementioned issue is whether the practice of granting benefits in healthcare might constitute an offence of embezzlement. The first part of this dissertation provides an answer to that question. The second part focuses on the significance that corruption provisions have for the topic discussed herein. Following the initial analysis of the issue of embezzlement mentioned, this issue is expanded by a discussion of the overall topic in the context of corruption offences, supplemented by an assessment of the topic in the light of new legislation introduced. An analysis of the topic chosen for this dissertation shows how important it is to study the relevant legal provisions of the law on statutory health insurance in order to be able to carry out an assessment of the topic from the perspective of criminal law. This applies all the more so in cases where a breach of social law and/or the law of professional rules and regulations might have consequences under criminal law, and the faulty application of applicable legal rules from legal areas outside criminal law would inevitably also lead to wrong conclusions being drawn on the basis of criminal law. The case-law of the German Federal Court of Justice [Bundesgerichtshof] on so-called “embezzlement by medical practitioners in private practice” [Vertragsarztuntreue] has been criticised in this respect. The Federal Court of Justice did not take account of the specifics of German social security law in a sufficiently diligent manner, and instead used outdated case-law of the German Federal Social Court [Bundessozialgericht] as a basis for its criminal-law assessment—precedents that were overruled by the Federal Social Court itself many years ago. This dissertation shows that this does not meet the requirements of the German Federal Constitutional Court [Bundesverfassungsgericht] and that such an approach is incompatible with requirements under social and criminal law. Finally, the limits of admissible prescription-related remuneration by health insurances are discussed and demonstrated from a critical, future-oriented perspective, together with the significance these limits have from a criminal law perspective. The significance of such limits is discussed using as an example a selective-agreement model designed to promote so-called “biosimilar medicines” by paying medical practitioners a percentage of the savings achieved in return for practitioners prescribing such medicines rather than more expensive ones. The circumstances discussed illustrate that the monetary influence that health insurances exert over the way in which medical practitioners in private practice prescribe such things as medicines may have consequences under criminal law if such influence may lead to competition being distorted. In the light of the above, health insurances should not be provided with additional criminal-law-related exceptional provisions that would enable them to exert further influence over the neutrality of decision-making in the area of medical prescriptions.

Cloud computing is an emerging and efficient computing model for processing and storing large amounts of data. Cloud storage service providers use heterogeneous storage devices as a way to extend the resources of a storage system by considering the best tradeoff between maintenance and performance costs. Cloud object storage systems emerge as scalable solutions and efficient data managers using heterogeneous devices, in terms of storage capacity and performance. In the cloud, as the workload changes, dynamic matching between load and storage device capabilities is needed to improve resource utilization and optimize the overall performance of an object storage system. Thus, load balancing techniques are crucial for redistributing the workload among processing and storage nodes to avoid underloading or overloading. Most conventional load balancing strategies in cloud storage systems are only aware of the storage capacity of storage devices or make assumptions about them being homogeneous, resulting in degradation of the storage system. To address these limitations, this work presents a non-intrusive load balancing strategy called BACOS that takes advantage of storage devices with heterogeneous performance in a cloud storage system. The results of the experimental evaluation confirm that BACOS can improve the performance of an object storage system in terms of response time, throughput and success rate of read/write requests in scenarios that vary the workload.
Computação em nuvem é um modelo de computação emergente e eficiente para processar e armazenar grandes quantidades de dados. Provedores de serviços de armazenamento em nuvem utilizam dispositivos de armazenamento heterogêneos como forma de ampliar recursos de infraestrutura de um sistema de armazenamento considerando a melhor compensação entre os gastos de manutenção e desempenho. Os sistemas de armazenamento de objetos em nuvem surgem como soluções escaláveis e eficientes para gerenciar dados usando dispositivos heterogêneos, no que diz respeito à capacidade de armazenamento e ao desempenho. Na nuvem, uma vez que a carga de trabalho muda dinamicamente, a atribuição dinâmica da carga de trabalho para as capacidades dos dispositivos de armazenamento é feita para melhorar a utilização dos recursos e otimizar o desempenho geral de um sistema de armazenamento de objetos. Assim, as técnicas de balanceamento de carga são cruciais para redistribuir a carga de trabalho entre os nós de processamento e armazenamento para evitar subutilização ou sobrecarga de recursos. A maioria das estratégias convencionais de balanceamento de carga em sistemas de armazenamento em nuvem priorizam o espaço de armazenamento ao invés do desempenho dos dispositivos de armazenamento ou fazem suposições sobre os dispositivos serem homogêneos, resultando na degradação do desempenho do sistema de armazenamento. Para atender essas limitações, este trabalho apresenta uma estratégia de balanceamento de carga não intrusiva denominada BACOS. A estratégia BACOS tira proveito da heterogeneidade dos dispositivos de armazenamento pertencente a um sistema de armazenamento de objetos na nuvem com o intuito de melhorar o desempenho geral do sistema. Os resultados da avaliação experimental confirmam que a estratégia BACOS consegue melhorar o desempenho de um sistema de armazenamento de objetos em termos de tempo de resposta, vazão e taxa de sucesso de requisições do tipo leitura/escrita em cenários variando a carga de trabalho.

Anne, Lady Bacon (c.1S2B-1610) is chiefly remembered as the translator of several important religious texts and as the mother of Francis and Anthony Bacon. This thesis seeks to re-evaluate her fulfilment of her role as a mother, translator and religious patron through an examination of her correspondence and an assessment of her published works. In doing so it demonstrates that Anne was adept at utilising epistolary conventions in order to achieve her politico-religious aims, and was far more capable at negotiating complex webs of power than has hitherto been acknowledged. Over one hundred of her letters survive, most of which are written to Anthony between the 1592 and 1596, and only a few of which have been published. I have transcribed all these extant letters, and through a close analysis of their content and material construction I offer an outline of her epistolary habits, and demonstrate how her letter-writing practice was influenced by the practical elements of sixteenth-century epistolary culture. I describe the factors that influenced Anne's relationship with her sons, and analyse how both parties performed or neglected their duties. The second half of my thesis focuses on Anne's religious patronage. I describe the iconographic significance of the female translator, and examine Anne's contribution to the nascent Protestant literary culture. Faced with a political climate that was becoming increasingly hostile to expressions of nonconformity, I look at how Anne harnessed other means by which to support the puritan cause, and assess the extent to which she directed the religious tenor of her local parishes.

Resumo: Este trabalho procura assinalar traços da filosofia de Francis Bacon na Enciclopédia francesa do século XVIII. Estes traços se manifestam nas teses que defendem o intercurso entre avanço técnico e progresso do conhecimento, e o ideal de ciência como conquista indefinida que escapa ao gênio individual, e sobrevive como patrimônio comum da humanidade. Abstract: This work search after some traces of Francis Bacon¿s thought in eighteenth century¿s French Encyclopaedia. This thesis focuses on the relationship between Thomas Hobbes and his one-time patron, Francis Bacon. It addresses the natural and civil histories and philosophies of the two thinkers. The study does not contain any extended treatment of Bacon and Hobbes' conception of rhetoric or theology, or their literary style. V The thesis comprises five chapters. Chapter 1 sets out the extant evidence for the personal relationship between the two thinkers. It also shows that Hobbes' knowledge of Bacon's works was extensive and that his interest in _ his texts was ongoing. Chapter 2 deals with Bacon and Hobbes' histories of learning. It argues that Hobbes consistently followed the contours of Bacon's history of knowledge. It also shows the way in which Hobbes assimilated details from the histories of other writers into this framework, and how he provided more naturalistic explanations of some of the central characters and motives in that history. The third chapter discusses Bacon and Hobbes' civil histories. This chapter explores the conception of history embodied in Hobbes' translation of Thucydides. It also addresses Hobbes' later church histories. In so doing it extends the analysis of the previous section in two ways. First, it traces Hobbes' conception of the history of philosophy back to Thucydides. Secondly, it shows how, especially in Hobbes' later church histmies, the factors that had led to the poverty of human science also posed dangers for the commonwealth. Chapter 4 deals with natural history and philosophy. Central to this chapter is the claim that Hobbes' assimilation of Euclid reflected a pre-existing commitment to a Baconian conception of the ends and justification of science. It also argues that Hobbes' two major discoveries of the 1630s and 1640s (as he saw them) were expressed in Baconian terms. Finally, the fifth chapter explores civil philosophy. I also explore Bacon and Hobbes' understanding of the passions and Hobbes' rejection of Bacon's doctrine of civil greatness. Throughout I have attempted to compare Bacon's mature position with Hobbes' philosophy at different stages of its development. The purpose of this thesis is not to claim that Hobbes' philosophy was essentially Baconian. Nor do I claim that Bacon, rather than Galileo, Harvey or Euclid, was Hobbes' pre-eminent interest. Rather, I argue that Bacon was one of a number of philosophers with whom Hobbes constructively and critically engaged. Consequently, I reject the thesis that Hobbes' thought was the antithesis of Bacon's, and the view that Hobbes soon forgot Bacon after reading Euclid and Galileo.

J.S. Bachs Chaconne är den sista satsen från Partita nr. 2 i d-moll för Soloviolin och är med sina 257 takter längre än svitens alla andra satser tillsammans. Den är idag betraktad som ett av de mest tekniskt och musikaliskt utmanande stycken som någonsin har skrivits för violin, och innehåller samtliga för tiden kända aspekter av violinteknik. Föreliggande studie behandlar först en musikteoretisk analys av Chaconne, följt av en kartläggning av styckets underliggande koraler och avslutningsvis en undersökning av anknytningen till Bachs hustru Maria Barbara Bachs plötsliga frånfälle. Studiens resultat påvisar att det inte bara förekommer totalt elva av Bachs egna koraler inkorporerade i stycket, utan även en numerologisk och musikvetenskaplig anknytning till M.B. Bach. Dessa upptäckter åskådliggör att närmare analys berikar framförarens interpretation av Chaconne i synnerhet, och övrig musik i allmänhet.

In seiner sechsstufigen Epochengliederung der Wissenschaftsgeschichte sieht Alexander von Humboldt nur wenige Lichter, welche die abendländische Dunkelheit der Zeit zwischen der wissenschaftlichen Blüte im arabischen Raum und den Entdeckungsfahrten des Columbus durchbrechen. Als den wichtigsten dieser wenigen Wegbereiter hebt der Freiherr den Franziskanermönch Roger Bacon hervor, der sich in fast allen Disziplinen hervorgetan und für die Einheit der Wissenschaften eingesetzt habe. Nicht nur im Kosmos, sondern auch bereits in den populären Vorträgen in der Singakademie und den Kritischen Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Geographie der Neuen Welt würdigt Humboldt den Engländer durch ausführliche Auseinandersetzungen mit dessen Opus maius.In his model of the six epochs of the history of science, Alexander von Humboldt sees scarcely any lights able to break through the occidental darkness in the time between the scientific prime of the arabic world and the expeditions of Columbus. The most prominent of these few pioneers to Humboldt is the fransciscan monc Roger Bacon who excelled in almost all disciplines and emphasized on the unity of the sciences. Humboldt honors the Englishman with detailed examinations of his Opus maius in Kosmos and also in his popular speeches in the Berlin Singakademie as well as in the examen critique on the history of geography of the New World.

L'oeuvre de bacon se realise surtout en series ou sequences, qui peuvent se developper a travers des tableaux isoles ou des triptyques. De facon generale, dans l'oeuvre de bacon, chaque unite de la serie ou de la sequence est une unite relativement autonome, voire isolee, organisee selon un schema non-homogene et concentrique tres varie-la serie ou la sequence etant en effet une succession ou une juxtaposition de differentes structures non-homogenes et concentrique. L'objectif de notre these est justement d'analyser la temporalite a l'interieur de la structure non-homogene et concentrique ainsi que la temporalite qui relie les differentes structures nonhomogenes et concentriques representees dans l'oeuvre de francis bacon. Nous tenons a situer notre recherche de la temporalite entre trois lignes complementaires : l'une, la ligne phenomenologique et existentialiste qui donne une grande importance au corps vecu, et insiste sur un "ici maintenant" ephemere, irremplacable, bref, une ligne qui nous ramene a la temporalite dite authentique; l'autre, la ligne psychanalytique qui tend a expliquer tout surtout par le rapport fruste enfant-mere, bref, une ligne qui nous ramene a l'intemporlite. Il existe aussi une troisieme ligne qui est une temporalite impersonnelle composee des images, ou des memoies collectives. Cette troisieme ligne relativise la subjectivite trop forte de premiere ligne, brise le cercle ferme du temps fige dans l'inconscient, et bien situe notre problematique dans notre societe post-moderne ou de mass-media. Sur cette troisieme ligne la notion des "machines desirantes" de deleuze nous donne une tres grande ouverture. La temporalite manifestee dans l'oeuvre de bacon peut justement nous faire entrevoir une possibilite de situer a ce carrefour.

Syftet med detta arbete var att utvecklas som Bach-interpret på piano genom att först studera verken på cembalo. Förutom på interpretationsfrågor hade jag i min undersökning även fokus på fingerteknik samt uttrycksmässiga utmaningar i Bachs Das Wohltemperierte Klavier (1722) preludium b-moll ur bok I. Metoderna som användes var dels en studie av källor som litteratur, notutgåvor och andra musikers inspelningar samt analys av dessa, dels egen musikalisk praktik på cembalo och piano som jag spelade in. Analyserna av samtliga inspelningar skedde i efterhand. Resultatet visar att spelandet på cembalo har gett mig ett ökat självförtroende i min tolkning av Bach på piano och ökad musikalisk insikt i den tidiga musiken. Jag har fått mycket bättre fingerlegato och jämnare klang. Dessutom har jag kunnat börja och sluta med en svagare dynamik och samtidigt ha jämna och fina toner. Förutom det musikaliska resultatet fick jag även ett kunskapsresultat, eftersom jag läste mycket om stycket och analyserade andras inspelningar och detta har gett mig en bredare syn på den musikaliska stil jag var ute efter. Slutsatserna är att ju mer jag spelar på cembalo desto mer jämnare och stabilare klang får jag i mitt pianospel. Jag får ett bättre fingerlegato. Användning av pedalen är inte längre nödvändig i detta stycke. Dock försvinner lite sångbarhet i pianospelandet

The nine items that I am submitting for a PhD by publication (two books and seven articles, amounting to some 220,000 words in total) constitute, I claim, a coherent body of research in terms of both subject-matter and of underlying art-historical methodology. The field studied is British figurative painting during the 1940s and 1950s, with particular reference to the art of Francis Bacon, who emerged as an innovative and influential figure at that time. Other British artists under scrutiny include Graham Sutherland, Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach. My main interest is in visual intelligence and the process of visual translation within creativity, as discussed in the accompanying, 12,000 word reflective essay. I seek to analyse how artists feed in a highly purposeful and inventive manner off one another (Bacon and Sutherland in the 1940s), off their predecessors (such as Edgar Degas, Waiter Sickert, Chaim Soutine, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti) and, especially in the case of Bacon, off various kinds of photographic imagery, above all propaganda emanating from pre-war Nazi Germany. This approach serves to embed the interpretation of meaning and content, a crucial concern for all these artists against the backdrop of a profoundly traumatic period in world history, within the analysis of formal language and of the process whereby artists and extend and manipulate to their own ends available resources of two-dimensional imagery.

La notion d'impossible fut différemment formulée par trois artistes d'une même génération : Barnett Newman (1905-1970), Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), Francis Bacon (1909-1992). Cette notion peut simplement se définir comme un écart entre intention et réalisation ; un écart nécessaire que Marcel Duchamp désignait en 1958 comme le << coefficient d'art >> d'une oeuvre. On retrouve en ces termes les éléments d'une pensée typiquement romantique de l'impossible, visant (tragiquement) a résorber l'écart entre l'art et la vie. Dans les années trente, la génération de bacon, de Kooning et Newman se voit confrontée aux avatars d'une telle esthétique : instrumentalisation de l'art par les régimes totalitaires, art régionaliste, prolongements de l'abstraction, vélléités révolutionnaires du surréalisme. Leur génération grandit ainsi dans l'idée d'une possible réforme du monde par l'art, et s'épanouit dans la désillusion de cette utopie dans l'après deuxième guerre mondiale. Une fois posés les termes d'une double trahison du surréalisme et de l'abstraction par ces peintres, il s'agit d'étudier les aspects spécifiques de leur art qui sous-tendent cette réalisation impossible de l'art dans la vie :l'inachèvement, et les multiples modes d'interrogations des limites entre l'espace réel et l'espace de l'art. Il apparait finalement que ces artistes ont fait de l'impossibilité même de fondre l'art et la vie le facteur dynamique de leur esthétique, cherchant en cela à maintenir l'utopie, le rêve, au bord d'une réalisation qui les détruirait. En cela l'impossible représente une menace perpétuelle qui n'épargne pas les schémas à travers lesquels l'histoire de l'art aborde (entre autres) l'art de leur génération (expressionnisme abstrait, peinture d'action, color-field, école de New York, de Londres. . . ) C'est également dans la contradiction que ces artistes apportent à ces catégories, à leur raisons d'être, que se perçoit leur conception d'un temps et d'un espace nouveaux en perpétuels devenir.

L'objet de ce travail est de clarifier la genese de l'essai et sa specificite en tant que genre litteraire. En se referant aux premiers essayistes de l'histoire litteraire, montaigne et bacon, on cherche a relever l'inspiration novatrice, les sources possibles et les premieres manifestations concretes du genre. Notre premiere partie examine le sens du mot "essai" et propose d'en apprehender les origines en remontant jusqu'a l'antiquite classique et a la chine de lao-tseu pour arriver ensuite a la source plus contemporaine qu'est la litterature de la renaissance. La deuxieme partie considere la phase effective de la naissance de l'essai: les differents points declencheurs qui ont pu motiver l'acte d'ecrire chez les deux precurseurs. Ces elements prennent l'aspect d'un defi a la rhetorique traditionnelle et d'une pratique de l'intertextualite. La nature et la forme des essais chez montaigne et bacon seront successivement analysees. Bien que les deux ecrivains partent d'une meme perspective de subjectivite, leurs oeuvres montrent deux modalites differentes : un monde de raisonnement lucide de l'essai formel et un monde de l'introspection propre a l'essai personnel. Pour conclure, l'etude met en question l'identite generique de l'essai, ne d'ailleurs du refus meme de tout systeme, en vertu d'une heterogeneite inouie qui empeche toute classification stable. La singularite du statut litteraire de l'essai, statut eminemment variable et conditionnel, resout pourtant le paradoxe de son identite et ouvre la voie a une interpretation plus vaste de la litterature.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel SuperiorRESUMO Esta dissertaÃÃo tem por objetivo investigar a abordagem da relaÃÃo entre conhecimento e aÃÃo polÃtica articulada por Francis Bacon (1561-1626). As obras O Progresso do Conhecimento (1605) e Novum Organum (1620) receberÃo especial atenÃÃo. A renovaÃÃo metodolÃgica advogada por Bacon serà situada no contexto de oposiÃÃo ao legado aristotÃlico pelo humanismo renascentista e pela reforma protestante. A utilizaÃÃo da terminologia aristotÃlica no pensamento de Bacon serà apresentada como uma fonte de confusÃo. Neste sentido, o conceito baconiano de forma serà indicado como um caso clarÃssimo de confusÃo terminolÃgica. A despeito de suas confusÃes terminolÃgicas e dos seus erros conceituais, o mÃtodo indutivo proposto por Bacon fomentou gigantescas modificaÃÃes na construÃÃo do saber cientÃfico e influenciou significativamente a vida da sociedade. E mais: ele associou o avanÃo do conhecimento com o progresso social. Pode-se objetar que o pensamento de Bacon tende a subordinar a Ãtica à tÃcnica, mas nÃo se pode negar que contribuiÃÃo dele à essencial para a compreensÃo da RevoluÃÃo Industrial, do Iluminismo, do Positivismo e das propostas contemporÃneas de engenharia social.
This dissertation aims at investigating the account of the relationship between knowledge and political action articulated by Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Special attention will be devoted to baconâs works The Advancement of Learning (1605) and Novum Organum (1620). The methodological renewal advocated by Bacon will be situated in the context of exposition to the aristotelian legacy generated by the Renaissance Humanism and the Protestant Reformation. The use of Aristotelian terminology in Baconâs thought will be presented as a source of confusion. In this sense, the baconian concept of form will be indicated as a clear-cut case of terminological confusion. Despite its terminological confusions and conceptual problems the method of induction proposed by Bacon fostered massive changes in scientific knowledge and signifintly influenced the life of society. In the addition to this, Bacon associated the advancement of knowledge with the idea of social progress. It may be objected that Baconâs thought tends to subordinate ethics to technical knowledge, but there is no doubt that his contribution is essential for the understanding of the Industrial Revolution, the Enlightenment, The Positivism and the contemporary proposals of social engineering
