Abstract:
Recent years have witnessed many developments in the use of the communicative approach in language teaching. This approach aims at developing students' ability to communicate with native speakers of the target language. To achieve this ability, students are required to have not only linguistic competence but also communicative competence. That is why the students need not only the linguistic knowledge but also the background knowledge of the culture in which the language is spoken. Language is a part of culture. Cultural differences always cause problems for speakers of different cultures while communicating. Therefore, the " learning of a second culture is often a part of the learning of a second language " (Brown, 1980: 242 ) . Background Studies, including culture, used to be neglected or taught improperly in the curriculum of the Hanoi Foreign Languages College. In consequence, Vietnamese E.F.L students at the College have a poor background knowledge of the English speaking countries and their people's patterned ways of life. This causes difficulties for them when communicating with native speakers of English, even when they are studying at the College where culture-based textbooks and materials are commonly used. Therefore, Background Studies, including culture, must be seen as a separate and indispensable component of the curriculum of the College which aims at providing the students with the background knowledge of English speaking countries and with an awareness of their people's ways of life, their customs and habits and so on. Various techniques for the teaching of this subject are examined.

Abstract:

The Polarized Gamma-ray Observer (PoGOLite) is a balloon-borne instrument capable of measuring as low as 10% polarization from a 200 mCrab source in a sixhour °ight. A wide array of sources can be studied, including pulsars, neutron stars, accretion discs and jets from active galactic nuclei. The two new observational parameters provided by such measurements, polarization angle and degree, will allow these objects to be studied in a completely new way, providing information both about the emission mechanisms and the geometries of the emitting objects. The instrument measures anisotropies in azimuthal scattering angles of gammarays with a close-packed array of 217 well-type phoswich detector cells (PDCs) by coincident detection of Compton scattering and photoelectric absorption. Each PDC comprises a \slow" plastic scintillator tube, a \fast" plastic scintillator rod and a BGO crystal. The fast scintillator is the main detector component, whereas the slow scintillator and the BGO crystal act as an active collimator and a bottom anticoincidence shield, respectively. The three parts are viewed by a single photomultiplier tube (PMT) and pulse shape discrimination is used to identify signals from each part.

The detector array is surrounded by a 54-segment side anticoincidence shield (SAS) made of BGO crystals. Each segment is 60 cm long and consists of three crystals. A total of 187 crystals have been procured and tested for light yield, energy resolution, dimensions and surface ¯nish. All crystals have been found to be of excellent quality and measured characteristics have been within speci¯ed limits. The performance of the instrument has also been evaluated in several beam tests with polarized synchrotron photons irradiating a prototype detector array. Front-end electronics have been tested and a modulation in the observed scattering angles has been observed in line with expectations. Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations of the instrument performance have shown that a 10 cm thick polyethylene shield is required around the detector array in order to su±ciently reduce the background from atmospheric neutrons. To validate these simulations, a simple detector array with four plastic scintillators and three BGO crystals was irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons. The array was shielded with polyethylene, mimicking the PoGOLite instrument design. Measured results could be accurately recreated in Geant4 simulations, demonstrating that the treatment of neutron interaction processes in Geant4 is reliable.

Chen, L. W. "Studies of the X-ray background and the intergalactic medium." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597559.

Abstract:
The X-ray background (XRB) and the intergalactic medium (IGM) are two of the most interesting topics in X-ray cosmology. Historically, studies of either subject provided important information on the other. For more than 30 years, the problem of the origin of the XRB has remained unsolved, despite large advances in X-ray instrumentation. Along the way, important constraints have been placed on the state of the intergalactic medium. Based on theoretical modelling and observational constraints, I have investigated both the origin of the X-ray background and the physical state of the intergalactic medium in this thesis. The first Chapter gives an outline of the observed properties of the XRB and the manner by which X-ray studies constrain the IGM. Chapter 2 reviews previous observations of the XRB and our current understanding of the spectrum, isotropy, and the resolved component of the XRB. An analysis of ROSAT data to study the spatial structure of the XRB is presented in Chapter 3. The ROSAT PSPC data include one deep survey field and six colinear medium survey fields, from which I have obtained limits on excess fluctuations and the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the XRB in the soft X-ray energy band from 1 arcmin to 5 deg. The 2σ upper limits of these results show no strong signal of anisotropy and inhomogeneity. Incorporating the observed ACF into detailed models of evolving discrete sources, I find that the correlation length of the major source dominating the residual XRB has to be < 4h50-1 Mpc, which is less than that of normal galaxies. Spectral fitting of both resolved and unresolved components of the XRB was carried out and is shown in Chapter 4. Data from the QSF3 field observed with the ASCA SIS and the ROSAT PSPC were used for this task. The diffuse XRB has a flat spectrum, which is well fit by a single power-law extending from 0.1 to 7 keV, with a photon index ranging from 1.4 to 1.5. On the contrary, the spectrum of the resolved component appears steeper. Such a steep-spectrum component can contribute in total less than 30 per cent to the residual XRB below 3 keV and only a few per cent above 3 keV. This suggests the entire XRB is composed of two spectrally distinct populations, of which the one with a steeper spectrum has been resolved in the soft band and most of which are AGN.

Kalousis, Leonidas. "Calibration of the Double Chooz detector and cosmic background studies." Phd thesis, Université de Strasbourg, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00979573.

Full text
Abstract:
Double Chooz is a short-baseline experiment, located at the Chooz power plant, designed to observe the neutrino oscillation signal controlled by the θ13 mixing angle. Part of my scientific research, as a graduate student, was directed towards the development of the software needed for the calibration of the Double Chooz Inner Veto and the analysis of the data associated with this task. I was responsible for the quality tests performed in every photomultiplier prior to its installation. I completed all the necessary measurements and analysed the data, extracting the first set of gains and determining the nominal high voltage values needed to be applied in all photomultipliers. All this information served as valuable input to the detector configuration. I was also responsible for the Inner Veto photomultiplier gain analysis during the first months of data taking. I was also very actively involved in data analysis and the estimations of the various sources of background. I initiated a number of methods to isolate and study the cosmic muon events that activate the detector. Additionally I worked on the estimation of the fast neutron rate registered in the detector. The techniques I put forward played a key role and were used in the first Double Chooz publication. Finally, I developed a set of algorithms to identify and reject an instrumental background, relevant for the Double Chooz detector using topological information of the deposited charge.

Kinney, Robert S. "Hellenistic dimensions of the Gospel of Matthew : studies in background." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.687444.

Full text
Abstract:
In the search for Matthean theology, scholars overwhelmingly approach the Gospel by way of Sitz im Leben. Whether arguing from a perspective that Matthew wrote from a cloistered Jewish community, perhaps as the master of a rabbinic-type school, or arguing from the other extreme, that Matthew is writing as the leader of a Gentile rebellion against such a Jewish community, scholarship appears unable to avoid the question of Matthew's and his community's relationship to Judaism. While this is undoubtedly an important and necessary question for understanding the Gospel, it often assumes too much about the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism. Scholars with such a sharp focus on this question tend to neglect Matthew's provenance in a thoroughly Hellenistic culture and first-century Judaism's thorough Hellenization. Part 1 of this dissertation (chapters 2-5) argues for a hybridized perspective in which Matthew's attention to Jewish sources and ideas is not denied, but in which echoes of Greek and Roman sources and ideas from Antiquity can be observed. This argument includes a survey of recent scholarship on the Judaism/Hellenism divide, consideration of several aspects of the Gospel (e.g. language, sources, provenance, genre), a discussion of rhetorical methodologies, and a survey of relevant ancient education practices. In Part 2 of this dissertation (chapters 6-8), I explore two facets of Matthew's Gospel as examples of the kind of Hellenistic contextual reading I am proposing. First, I specifically explore the Sermon on the Mount in the context of ancient Greek historical and philosophical writings (particularly of the Socratics). Second, I explore the possibility of Homeric resonances throughout the Gospels. I conclude that Matthew's Gospel has a rich Greco-Roman backdrop-one that will only help us as we seek to interpret the text of the Gospel and learn how it was understood by its first audience.

Abstract:
During the last fifty years, family life has noticeably changed in industrialized countries. Among many changes, it appears that there is a shift from a "family dominated" society to a more "individualistic" society where the concept of family loses its importance, family ties weakens, and elders lose their essential roles within the family because the continuity between generations in respect to family traditions and values is stopped. Ethnic-elders have different expectations from their family members based on their ethnic-identity, family values, and the extent of their acculturation. These value differences might also influence the accessibility and provision of psycho-social services. Therefore, the purpose of the present cross-cultural study was to understand and compare different ethnic-elders' expectations from their family members and from psychosocial service providers based on their concept of perception of family values. An instrument was designed for this study implementing a 4 point-scale and vignettes. Data were collected from seniors from South Asian (Sri-Lanka), Korean, Hungarian and Jewish communities and from a group of Social Worker (N = 94). Significant differences were found between group values: overall the Social Worker group was the most individualistic/non-traditional with the Jewish group next; the South Asians and Koreans were the most family-oriented/traditional; and these attitudes were the most different from those of the Social Workers. These particularities have important implications for the delivery of social services.

Kole, Merlin. "Background Studies for the Balloon-Borne Hard X-ray Polarimeter PoGOLite." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Partikel- och astropartikelfysik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-155754.

Full text
Abstract:
The polarisation degree and angle of the X-ray flux emitted by astrophysical objects holds valuable information on the responsible emission mechanisms and on the emission environments. PoGOLite is a balloon-borne hard X-ray polarimeter designed to measure polarisation using a segmented plastic scintillator array. The instrument was launched for its first scientific, near-circumpolar, flight in July 2013 from the Esrange Space Centre in Northern Sweden. The primary observation target for this flight, the Crab, was observed during the first 2 days of flight. One of the main challenges for PoGOLite is the relatively high measurement background, predicted to be induced by atmospheric neutrons. No measurement data on the neutron environment for the flight conditions of PoGOLite is however available, making exact predictions impossible. This environment was therefore studied in detail. A Monte Carlo based model of the atmospheric neutron flux was developed. This model is capable of providing differential neutron energy spectra for all altitudes, latitudes and solar activities. The predictions of this model were found to be in good agreement both with measurement data, measured by high altitude aircraft, and with predictions by location and time specific models. The results from the model were verified with data recorded by a purpose-build balloon-borne neutron detector, PoGOLino. The PoGOLino instrument uses novel neutron sensitive LiCAF scintillators sandwiched between BGO crystals which serve as an anti-coincidence system. PoGOLino was launched from the Esrange Space Centre to an altitude of 31 km on March 20th 2013 and performed the first successful measurements of the neutron flux for the PoGOLite flight conditions. Using the developed model the background as measured by the PoGOLite mission in 2013 was studied. Monte Carlo simulations were used to confirm that the PoGOLite background during flight is dominated by neutrons. The simulated neutron induced signal rate and its variations with time were furthermore found to be in good agreement with measurements. Based on these results the implications of the background on the polarisation measurements of the Crab were studied. Lastly, based on the acquired knowledge of the background, changes to the instrument geometry for potential future flight of PoGOLite were studied along with the expected achievable improvement in performance for such flights.

Malone, Sean C. "Intra-Racial Prejudice amongst African-Americans when Policing Members of Their Own Racial Background." Thesis, Union Institute and University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10933852.

Abstract:

Prejudice is a pervasive concept that has been used at different times to hold those who are different from us at bay. In American culture, it has been revisited time after time as each new wave of immigrants arrives on American soil. For the African-American however, it has been a concept and social construct that continues to plague the culture and community. The goal and purpose of this study was to investigate the assumed biases observed by African-American officers when they encounter African-American civilians. While this phenomenon may impact both female and male officers from all racial backgrounds, for the purpose of this research the focus was on the impact it has on African-American male officers. This study aspired to explore the psychological, and sociological theories that influence the behaviors of these officers during these encounters. The research question examined whether, African-American officers demonstrate a racial bias, when policing their own culture? The study asked if exposure to media priming, acceptance of stereotypes, and a desire to assimilate into a predominantly Caucasian agency results in intra-racial prejudice and discrimination on behalf of the African-American officers. Through a qualitative approach known as the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique, this research investigated how African-American officers’ perceived their experience of policing the African-American community. It also examined their experience of having served within a police force that is predominantly Caucasians. A snowball technique was employed to obtain a subject pool of twelve retired African-American officers from across the country. Interviews were conducted, transcribed, coded, and categorized to develop themes that captured similarities in the thought process of these retired officers. It was posited that exposure to media stereotypes of African-Americans and their community and a desire to assimilate to the department would result in aggression towards African-American civilians. Findings of the study revealed these seven themes: Media, “The Blue Wall”, “We All Bleed Blue”, Comfort with a Caucasian Partner and Loyalty, Black Lives Matter, Mistreatment of African-Americans, and Strained Relations in the Community. What emerged from these themes was the acknowledgement that these are influencing factors in the everyday life of the African-American officer. Participants also reported observing the phenomenon of intra-racial prejudice within the law enforcement. Lastly findings of this study suggest the need for further in-depth research.

Willig, R. (Reeta). "Hip fracture—aspects of background factors and outcome." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2006. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514279808.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract There are no definitive laboratory tests for osteoporosis, and little is known of their age-related variation. Furthermore, the knowledge of factors contributing to the occurrence of hip fracture, the most important complication of osteoporosis, during the fall is insufficient. Hip fracture is known to impair the function of elderly patients considerably at short term, but here is only limited information of the potential permanence of this impairment. The goal of treatment is to restore the patient's pre-fracture lifestyle. In this respect, intensive rehabilitation has been recommended and applied in many institutions. However, the number of critical reports on this topic is limited, and the results are heterogeneous. An assessment of the effects of age on some commonly used parameters of bone metabolism in females was performed on 238 healthy Caucasian women aged 40–86 years. It was observed that the markers of bone formation, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin, and the marker of bone resorption, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP) as well as parathyroid hormone (PTH), phosphorus and creatinine increased with age, whereas 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and oestradiol decreased. All these parameters except calcium showed a significant age relation. An evaluation of the factors contributing to the occurrence of hip fracture during a fall on the hip was performed by comparing 123 hip fracture patients to 132 persons who had experienced a fall that caused a visible soft tissue injury in the hip or gluteal region without a fracture. The hip fracture patients more commonly than the fallers were women, lived in long-term institutional care, had had previous stroke with hemiparesis, had Parkinsonism, used neuroleptics, were dependent in ADL and had lower body mass indexes. According to the logistic regression model, institutional residence, low body mass index and a history of stroke with hemiplegic status differed between the fracture cases and controls. The long-term effects (mean follow-up 7 years) of trochanteric hip fracture on outcome were studied by comparing 200 consecutive patients (mean age 77 years) and age- and sex-matched controls representing the average population from the same area. Mortality increased gradually, being 4.5% above the control level at one month and 9% at six years after the fracture. 48% the surviving patients and 90% of the surviving controls were still living in their own homes or service apartments ,whereas 48% of the patients and 5% of the controls were instutionalized. The ambulatory capacity of the patients was significantly worse than controls. The patients managed their ADL activities significantly less well, required more home help and had fewer social contacts and outdoor hobbies than the controls. An assessment of the effect of intensive rehabilitation on the coping of hip fracture patients was done in a prospective randomised study on 154 patients, half of whom were treated postoperatively in a rehabilitation clinic and the other half at health care centre hospitals. Seven of the 70 survival patients of the rehabilitation group 5 of the 71 respective controls were institutionalized at one year. No difference was either observed in the walking ability or ADL functions between the groups.

Abstract:
During the last three decades there has been an increased influx of refugees and immigrants into Scandinavia. The overall aim of this thesis was primarily to improve our knowledge of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need, both normative and self-perceived, in adolescents of varying geographic origin. A further aim was to determine whether any differences with respect to perception of general appearance and psychosocial well-being were related to geographic origin. Papers I and II concerned self perceived and normative orthodontic treatment need. About 500 12-13 year-old subjects, stratified into different groups: A-Sweden, B-Eastern/Southeastern Europe, C-Asia and D-other countries, answered a questionnaire and underwent clinical examination by the author. In paper III the association between the two variables in papers I and II was investigated. Paper IV was a follow up study, at 18-19 years of age, of the relationship between geographic origin and prevalence of malocclusion, self-perceived treatment need, temporomandibular symptoms and psychosocial wellbeing. In Paper V a qualitative study of 19-20 year old subjects was conducted, to identify the strategies they had adopted to handle the issue of persisting poor dental aesthetics. The main findings were that at 12-13 years of age, immigrant subjects had a lower perceived orthodontic treatment need than subjects of Swedish background. Girls of Swedish background had the highest self perceived treatment need, whilst girls of non-Swedish background were most concerned that fixed appliance therapy would be painful. In a few of the clinical variables measured at 12-13 years of age, the Swedish group exhibited the greatest space deficiency and irregularity in both the maxillary and mandibular anterior segments and greater overjet, compared to the Eastern/Southeastern European and Asian groups. The clinical implications were negligible. The orthodontic treatment need according to “Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need - Dental HealthComponent” (IOTN-DHC) grades 4 and 5, ranged from 30 to 40 percent, without any inter-group differences. There were strong associations between subjects perceiving a need for orthodontic treatment and 6IOTN-DHC grades 4 and 5, anterior crossbite and avoiding smiling because they were self-conscious about their teeth. At the age of 18-19 years, the frequency of malocclusion was similar in all groups. Subjects of Asian origin had a higher self-perceived orthodontic treatment need than their Swedish counterparts and a higher frequency of headache than those of Eastern/Southeastern European origin. Psychological wellbeing was reduced in nearly one quarter of the sample, more frequently in girls than boys. No association was found between self-perceived orthodontic treatment need and psychological wellbeing. The theory “Being under the pressure of social norms” was generated in Paper V, and it can be applied to improve our understanding of young adults who have adjusted to living with poor dental aesthetics and also aid to identify those who are not as well-adjusted and would probably benefit from treatment. Undisclosed dental fear is an important barrier to acceptance of orthodontic treatment in early adolescence. Despite demographic changes due to immigration, no major change in the prevalence of malocclusion and normative orthodontic treatment need has been disclosed. This does not apply to adolescents and adults who immigrated at an older age.

Hourlier, Adrien. "Background studies for electron anti-neutrino oscillations measurement at the Double Chooz experiment." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016USPCC192/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Double Chooz is a reactor anti-neutrino experiment which measures the θ13 mixing parameter in the neutrino oscillation phenomenon thanks to two identical underground detectors located at different distances from the two reactors of the Chooz nuclear power plant in the French Ardennes. The Far Detector started data taking in April 2011 and the Near Detector began operations in January 2015. This thesis presents an analysis of both the single- and twodetector phases. Neutrinos interact in Double Chooz through inverse β decay on protons, where positron and a neutron are emitted, creating two coincident signals. Analyses were performed for each detector on independent samples using the neutron capture on Gadolinium or on Hydrogen. A combined analysis, using both neutron captures is also presented. Backgrounds to the neutrino sample originate from the ambient radioactivity and the abundance of atmospheric muons (cosmogenic (β-n) emitters, fast neutron showers, and muons stopping and decaying inside the detector). This thesis focuses on developing techniques for measuring and reducing the Stopping Muon background. With colleagues from APC and MIT, a 60 litre neutron TPC was installed in both underground laboratories at Chooz. This low pressure He/CF4-based time projection chamber, called DCTPC, measures the flux, energy spectrum and direction of fast neutrons in both locations, with different overburdens (150 and 300 meters water equivalent for the Near and Far Laboratories respectively)

Abstract:
The Project in Canada to Search for Supersymmetric Objects (PICASSO) searches for cold dark matter through the direct detection of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via spin-dependent and spin independent interactions with 19F nuclei. The detection principle is based on the superheated droplet technique; the detectors consist of a gel matrix with millions of liquid droplets of superheated fluorocarbon (C4F10) dispersed in it. In order to reduce the background, it is essential to distinguish the signature of different background particles interacting in the detector. A dedicated setup was developed in order to study the response of the C4F10 droplets in the presence of different backgrounds. The main objectives of this research are to identify the actual size (diameter) of the droplet increases due to phase transition and to check and establish the correlation between the droplet size and the maximum amplitude of the signal. In addition, the alpha-neutron discrimination was studied by observing each event’s image frames and the associated acoustic signal to get the amplitude distribution. The mean ratio of bubble size to droplet size was found to be 5.48, independent of temperature and type of interacting particle. Furthermore, no correlation was found between the droplet size and the maximum amplitude of the signal. As for the discrimination studies, the analysis of the signal events has confirmed that alphas generated outside the active liquid in the gel are much more difficult to discriminate from neutron than when alphas are generated inside the active liquid.

Abstract:
This thesis documents a data-driven methodology for the estimation of the multijet background in fully hadronic final states with high missing transverse momentum within the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The implementation of this methodology within two analyses searching for evidence of supersymmetric particle production using 36.1 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data is described. The two analyses described in this thesis investigate supersymmetric particle production via the strong interaction both inclusively via the superpartners of the first and second generation quarks and exclusively via the superpartners of the third generation t and b quarks. Both analyses consider the eventual decay of any produced supersymmetric particles to standard model particles and the lightest neutralino, which escapes without detection and is observed as missing momentum in the transverse plane of the detector. Additionally, an investigation into the level of radiation damage received by the ATLAS silicon Semiconductor Tracker is presented with predictions of the level of radiation damage faced over the course of the planned lifetime of the detector.

Abstract:
A space camera is a promising candidate to address the non-stop rising interest for astrophysics research in the Compton regime. The MeVCube mission is intended to be launched in 2022, hosting an on-board Compton Camera. To better support the development of the instrument in this early stage, a series of feasibility studies to assess two potential launch orbits were performed. The studies were composed by a series of mission analysis simulations which permitted the characterisation of the orbital environments for the two orbital options. Several sources of background noise to the instrument were identified. The population of trapped protons and trapped electrons were simulated for the periods of Solar Minimum and Solar Maximum, as well as the levels of Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) flux. The performance of trade-off studies concluded that an equatorial orbit is more preferable for reducing the influence of background noise. To better estimate the environment effects at the equatorial orbit, the number of particles which can penetrate the detector shielding were simulated. The next step was to perform a series secondary studies whose aim were to simulate the induced current on the electrodes, produced by the interactions occurring within the detector. The actualisation of these simulations required the study of photon interaction with matter, the various Cadmium-Zink-Telluride (CZT) types and the how they operate, and the use of a sophisticated software to perform the appropriate simulations. COMSOL, which allows the method of FEA, was chosen as the tool to perform the simulations. The geometry of the detector voxel was primarily designed in SIEMENS NX. The geometry was inserted into COMSOL, where a number of iterations were performed to finalise the appropriate mesh size, which ensured an accurate representation of the Electric field and the Weighting potential within the detector voxel. The induced current on the electrodes was decided to be calculated via MATLAB. As a verification step it was thought useful to firstly plot the weighting potential of the three electrodes under test; the chosen anode pixel, the steering grid and the cathode. The process revealed a series of numerical errors, most likely introduced by the type of mesh chosen or by the data manipulation process via MATLAB. Significant reduction of the numerical errors would lead to more accurate values for the induced current. Unfortunately, due to time constraints this was a task that was not completed. Solving this problem would be optimal for future studies with MATLAB, as the induced current on the electrodes can be correctly calculated based on charge transport within the detector bulk.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University
The standardized uptake value (SUV) is increasingly being used for diagnosis, staging, and monitoring disease in clinical oncology. Comparing tumor SUV to background SUV is an attractive way to minimize variability and ensure the quality of scans across different institutions. The liver has been identified as a potential source for background normalization, however no studies have compared the liver to other background sites for a variety of cancers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of liver uptake for the standardization of FDG PET/CT imaging. Scans from 145 patients were prospectively reviewed under the supervision of a radiologist with board certification in nuclear medicine (R.M.S. , 3 years of experience). Liver SUV values were correlated to mediastinum SUV values in lung and breast cancer patients, and internal jugular vein (IJV) SUV values in head and neck cancer patients. The independent t-test was used to determine if there was a statistically significant affect of the amount of incubation time or use of intravenous contrast on the SUV. For the lung and breast cancer patients, a strong correlation was observed between the mediastinum SUVmean and liver SUVmean (r = 0.89), whereas for the head and neck cancer patients, a weaker correlation was observed between the IJV SUVmean and the liver SUVmean (r = 0.69). Neither the amount of incubation time nor the use of IV contrast demonstrated a significant affect on the SUV. We conclude that liver SUVmean may be used to standardize FOG PET/CT studies in cancers of the lung, breast and head and neck. However, additional studies in other cancers as well as the affects of age, gender, benign disease and use of chemotherapy are still desired before widespread adoption of this standard.

Abstract:
SNO+ is a liquid scintillator experiment designed to study a wide range of neutrino-related physics goals, such as solar neutrinos, reactor and geo-neutrinos, and neutrinoless double beta decay. The success of the experiment depends in part on the ability to accurately characterise the detector's optical properties, and also develop effective methods to suppress contributions from unwanted backgrounds. This thesis presents one of the central calibration systems which will be used to make measurements of the detector's optical scattering properties. The hardware and its integration into the wider detector will be discussed. A simplifed analysis of simulated water data is also presented, in order to show that the scattering properties can be accurately measured. The reconstruction of photons' scattering position, length and angles can be achieved to a high degree of accuracy, with a small reconstruction bias and resolution in comparison to the scale of the detector itself. This thesis also presents a study into the rejection of two important radioactive backgrounds that will be encountered during the scintillator phases of SNO+: the (212Bi + 212Po) and (214Bi + 214Po) beta-alpha chains, where both components of each chain occur within a single detector trigger window, creating what is known as a BiPo pileup event. Two methods have been considered: one using a comparison between the cumulative time residual distributions of BiPo pileup and double-beta signal events, and the other using a log-likelihood difference method. Both methods perform extremely well, with the first being capable of rejecting > 95% of BiPo pileup events for a 1% loss of signal, and the second rejecting > 97% of backgrounds for the same signal loss.

Loosmann, Joerg. "Astrological consulting in the area of business consulting : an empirical investigation into the applicability upon the background of systems thinking." Thesis, University of Lincoln, 2014. http://eprints.lincoln.ac.uk/14691/.

Full text
Abstract:
The starting point for this research study is the application of astrological consulting in the area of business consultancy. In many Western civilisations there is considerable prejudice regarding astrological consulting especially when it is active in the area of business consultancy. In contrast to this, astrological business consulting is encountered much more commonly in Asia and the USA, where it is not unusual that enterprises enquire for astrological consulting service. The research aims to investigate the applicability of astrological consulting in the domain of business counselling within a context of economic sociology. Management consulting has been used as a reference concept of business consultancy. The realm of systems thinking is considered to be suitable as the theoretical framework for this research. The systems methodology of the Networked Thinking approach of the interpretive tradition has been used to determine the systems of astrological business consulting as well as that of management consulting. This research proposes that, from a system-theoretical view or, let us say, from a technical-oriented perspective on management, astrological business consulting as compared with management consulting is not an applicable and justifiable consultancy concept in the area of business consulting. The research methodology used aims to set up a direct confrontation between the system of astrological business consulting and that of management consulting. For this purpose the thesis has been broken down into five stages. In the first stage each of the two consulting concepts was theoretically developed as a hypothesis on the basis of a comprehensive review of the literature with the aim of determining its systems structure. In this stage of theory-building, an exploratory as well as a descriptive type of research was employed. By applying an exploratory research type, the author’s intention is to look for ideas and patterns in order to construct the systems of reference as hypotheses. This research type has been supported to an even greater extent by a descriptive type to identify and classify the structure of each of the systems. Hence an inductive and a basic research approach are embedded in this first stage of the research process. The secondary data collection involves a mixture of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The knowledge acquired from this secondary data collection comes from multi-disciplinary but scientific sources. In the second stage of the research process the structure of each of the two systems derived from literature was statistically verified and modified where necessary. In the third stage, subsequent to the statistical verification, the two hypotheses were tested in practice. The primary data collection represents a deductive and a quantitative research approach mixed with qualitative components by using survey research as a suitable research method. The Delphi technique is regarded as appropriate to be employed as a data collection tool. Astrological and management consulting experts were contacted by a questionnaire procedure to achieve consensus with regard to the structure of each of these two consulting systems. Prior to this survey procedure, the questionnaires were subject to a pilot testing. The analysis of the findings from the primary data collection required modifications in each of the two consulting systems with regard to their systems structure. In stage four the two system models theoretically derived from the literature were compared with the empirical data. Subsequent to this comparison, in stage five, the two consulting systems empirically validated were confronted with each other by comparing their determinants.

Kangas-Kontio, T. (Tiia). "Genetic background of HDL-cholesterol and atherosclerosis:linkage and case-control studies in the Northern Finnish population." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2011. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514295812.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Coronary heart disease (CHD), a manifestation of atherosclerosis, is the leading single cause of death in Finland. CHD is affected by numerous genetic and environmental factors, their combined effects and interactions between them. Low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and the most common dyslipidemia associated with early onset CHD, but the mechanisms regulating HDL-C levels and protecting from atherosclerosis are still not completely understood. Adiponectin is a hormone that is secreted by adipose tissue and has several anti-atherosclerotic effects. There is multiple evidence suggesting that adiponectin could protect against CHD via positive effects on HDL metabolism. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent angiogenic growth factor that has a potentially conflicting role in atherosclerosis; it may have protecting or predisposing effects. The objective of this thesis was to study the genetic background of HDL-C regulation and atherosclerosis. Three studies were executed using extended families with CHD or case-control setting, with samples collected from Northern Finland. In the first study, seven chromosomal regions showing suggestive evidence of linkage were identified for HDL-C regulation, using genome-wide linkage approach. In the second study, we found a strong correlation between HDL-C and adiponectin, but failed to show evidence of a shared genetic background. However, a genetic correlation between adiponectin and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol was revealed. We also studied the genetic regulation of adiponectin, and for the first time its most active form, high-molecular weight adiponectin, and found suggestive evidence of linkage to three chromosomal regions. In the third study, it was discovered that the studied VEGF gene polymorphisms did not have a major effect on atherosclerosis quantified as carotid intima-media thickness or the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This thesis presents potential regions for the genetic regulation of HDL-C and adiponectin and gives new information about their relationship and the effect of VEGF polymorphisms in atherosclerosis. The strong correlation between adiponectin and HDL-C was further strengthened, but we failed to show a shared genetic background between them
Tiivistelmä Sepelvaltimotauti, eräs valtimonkovettumataudin ilmentymä, on yleisin yksittäinen kuolinsyy maassamme.

Abstract:

A good leadership inside a company is able to improve a company’s performance.

This thesis tries to highlight the importance of an effective leader for a company and

how a company is able to enhance their performance by upgrading leadership

training. Therefore, this work concentrates on the technical industry in Germany to

find a standardized leader image regarding biographical characteristics, which offers

the requirements for modulating leadership development methods or rather leadership

training to it.

The existing literature gave information about the duties and responsibilities of a

leading person and the major contributors to an effective leader. Beyond that,

information has been gathered about the educational background of the leadership

circles in Germany’s top companies to draw a conclusion about the composition of

the leadership ranks in Germany’s technical companies. Besides, leadership

development methods have been analyzed from which leadership training is

emphasized as the most important for this study.

In order to gather the missing information, a qualitative research has been conducted,

giving the information about the standard leaders as a male, studied engineer, who did

not experience leadership soft skills during his academic education. From this it

follows, that it is possible to adapt leadership training in terms of knowledge transfer

of leadership soft skills especially to fill the gaps of the technical audience.

Abstract:
The authors report the results from a survey about financial literacy, financial market participation and numerous factors such as age, income, and education etcetera, which may or may not affect the level of financial literacy and financial market participation among Swedish adults. The study has a qualitative approach and the the survey is conducted on 80 random chosen Swedish individuals in Jönköping.  The major findings in this study were the following; Individuals with high financial literacy are more likely to have money invested in stocks and/or funds than individuals with low financial literacy. Education and age affect market participation, whilst the variables gender and income does not. The sample did not show a significant correlation between education and financial literacy. However, taking several underlying factors in to account one can see a pattern between these two variables. For example, individuals with a Master’s Degree have higher knowledge about financial concepts than individuals with a High School education. Age does not have as great impact on financial literacy as education, but there is still a pattern to observe, in general, the older we get the wiser we become. Individuals with higher income, have in general a higher financial literacy than individuals with low income. At last, men in general possess a higher knowledge about financial concepts than women.

Abstract:
The NA62 experiment aims at measuring the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay K⁺ → π⁺νν ̄ with 10% precision. To achieve the desired precision, high levels of background rejection must be accomplished using techniques such as high-resolution timing, kinematic rejection, particle identification, and hermetic vetoing of photons. K⁺ → π⁺π0 (Kπ₂) decays, one of the largest background sources, are mainly rejected by kinematics reconstruction and photon vetoing in NA62. To evaluate Kπ₂ background rejection capabilities of the NA62 system, we studied the inefficiency of these two techniques. Kπ₂ and K⁺ → μ⁺ν (Kμ₂) events were selected from 2015 minimum bias data runs using Kπ₂/Kμ₂ separation cuts whose efficiency was also studied in details. The inefficiency of kinematics suppression was found to be (2.16 ± 0.21) × 10-³, and the upper limit of the photon veto inefficiency was 7 × 10-⁷ at 90% confidence level. Combined with correction factors from Monte Caro simulations, a preliminary result, S/B > 0.2, was estimated for Kπ₂ background in the measurement of K⁺ → π⁺νν ̄. Also, an upper limit on the branching ratio of the invisible decay π0 → νν ̄, 4.3×10-⁷, was obtained at 90% confidence level.

Abstract:

This 3-month intensive single case study of Rey (pseudonym), a 16-year-old male client and his family highlights the impact of the local wraparound program in Santa Cruz County (WRAP) on a participating probation youth of immigrant background. A holistic lens helped understand the interactive spheres that made up Rey's world. The theoretical considerations reviewed—both individual and systems orientations—suggested a more complete view of the complex interrelated factors that made up the participant's reality. The literature review covered social ecology; community psychology; wraparound; the local cultural, historical, and ethnographical background; attachment; complex trauma; emotion regulation; interconnectedness; family therapy; and coherence. There is a session-by-session synopsis of Rey's interactions with the program, followed by an analysis of the sessions as they related to his defense, receiving support, connectedness, participation, exploration, and emotion regulation. The holistic model offered detailed insight into Rey's experiences during his work with WRAP. Although the results are individualized, the focus on the single participant allowed for sensitization and increased awareness regarding WRAP's impact on Rey's world. The use of the holistic model and the themes that emerged should be examined in further research with different populations and diverse sociocultural surroundings.
