Vigdor, Steven E. Expansion Everlasting. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198814825.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 5 presents experiments illuminating the cosmological evolution of the universe and its energy budget, accounting for its longevity. The observations establishing the Hubble’s Law linear relationship between intergalactic distances and recession speeds, and their interpretation in terms of the expansion of cosmic space, are reviewed. The evidence for big bang cosmology from nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is presented. The measurements that establish the ongoing acceleration of the cosmic expansion are reviewed: distant supernova recession speeds, tiny CMB anisotropies, baryon acoustic oscillations, and gravitational lensing. Excellent model fits to these data, assuming general relativity, cold dark matter, and a cosmological constant, lead to precise determinations of both the age of the universe and the energy budget of the universe. The cosmic history of the expansion rate and the energy budget are inferred, along with the remarkable flatness of cosmic space within the observable portion of the universe.

Felmet, Kathryn, and Richard Orr. Transport of the Critically Ill Child. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199918027.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides essential information about risks and therapeutic opportunities related to interfacility and intrafacility transport of critically ill children. Background information regarding US regulation of the transfer of patients via the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act is provided. Also discussed is information crucial to making decisions about mode of transport (ground vs. air, helicopter vs. fixed wing), including presentations of specific risks related to each (vibration, noise, cold, changes in barometric pressure affecting oxygenation and volume of gas in enclosed patient cavities). Options for team composition (via emergency medical services, local emergency department providers, or pediatric specialized transport teams) are described. Finally, the concept of “the golden hour” is reviewed along with pitfalls when it is applied inappropriately to critically ill children who would benefit from more aggressive efforts at stabilization than rapid transfer without such efforts.

Abstract:
Managing science, which includes managing scientific research and, implicitly, managing scientists, has much in common with managing any enterprise, and most of these issues (e.g. annual budget planning and reporting) form the background. Equally, much scientific research is carried in universities ancient and modern, which have their own mores, ranging from professorial autocracy to democratic plurality, as well as national and international with their missions and styles. But science has issues that require a somewhat different approach if it is to prosper and succeed. Society now expects science, whether publicly or privately funded, to deliver benefits, yet the definition of science presumes no such benefit. Managing the expectations of the scientist with those of society is the challenge of the manager of science. The book addresses some issues around science and the organizations that do science. It then deals with leadership, management and communication, team building, recruitment, motivation, managing scientists, assessing performance, cooperation and competition. This is followed by a discussion of proposal writing and reviewing, committees and meetings, project management, risk and health and safety. Finally, there is a discussion on how to deal with disaster, how to cope with the stresses of management and how to deal with difficult problems.

Ginsberg, Benjamin. The Fall of the Faculty. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199782444.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Until very recently, American universities were led mainly by their faculties, which viewed intellectual production and pedagogy as the core missions of higher education. Today, as Benjamin Ginsberg warns in this eye-opening, controversial book, "deanlets"--administrators and staffers often without serious academic backgrounds or experience--are setting the educational agenda. The Fall of the Faculty examines the fallout of rampant administrative blight that now plagues the nation's universities. In the past decade, universities have added layers of administrators and staffers to their payrolls every year even while laying off full-time faculty in increasing numbers--ostensibly because of budget cuts. In a further irony, many of the newly minted--and non-academic--administrators are career managers who downplay the importance of teaching and research, as evidenced by their tireless advocacy for a banal "life skills" curriculum. Consequently, students are denied a more enriching educational experience--one defined by intellectual rigor. Ginsberg also reveals how the legitimate grievances of minority groups and liberal activists, which were traditionally championed by faculty members, have, in the hands of administrators, been reduced to chess pieces in a game of power politics. By embracing initiatives such as affirmative action, the administration gained favor with these groups and legitimized a thinly cloaked gambit to bolster their power over the faculty. As troubling as this trend has become, there are ways to reverse it. The Fall of the Faculty outlines how we can revamp the system so that real educators can regain their voice in curriculum policy.
