Baudon, Antoine Philippe. "To jihad and back home." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12096/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis theorises a disengagement framework to disengage French individuals engaged with the militant salafi-jihadi movement and criticises the French government’s response to this growing phenomenon. To make sense of disengagement, engagement must first be made sense of. Engagement is examined through Social Movement Theory, especially via incentives, frames, networks, and the repertoire of action. Specifically, this thesis makes sense of why and how French individuals engage with the pan-Islamist movement through the Salafi-quietist and Tabligh movements. Then, it makes sense of French individuals engagement with the militant salafi-jihadi movement, namely, via a focus on the Algerian Groupe Islamique Arm´e, al-Qaeda, and Daesh. The pan-Islamist movement is seen as the phenomenon’s inception: a movement proselytising individuals to turn againstWestern society. While the pan-Islamist movement is non-violent, the militant salafi-jihadi movement is a violent sub-movement. The French government has only responded, since the 1980s, by force towards the militant salafi-jihadi movement but has not responded to the pan-Islamist movement. In fact, some politicians have been reticent to prevent, even criticise, the pan-Islamist movement’s spread. With the phenomenon’s evolution, especially the Syrian jihad, the French government’s hard counter-terrorism approach is inadequately adapted. It has created a soft approach in 2014. Yet, it follows the controversial notion of mental manipulation that neither counter-acts the pan-Islamist movement nor the militant salafi-jihadi movement. Via the examination of engagement, this thesis can both critically analyse the French hard and soft approaches and uncover lessons for disengagement in the hopes of establishing a disengagement framework. That is, a soft social approach. This is not a social approach through job creation and improvement of socioeconomics. Rather, this is a framework wherein individuals are given the chance to belong and participate into society. That is, they are engaged into the French Social Contract. If needed, disengagement programmes can be included. Overall, this thesis aims at a policy recommendation for the creation of a nationwide disengagement framework and an adaptation of France’s counter-terrorism strategy.

Li, Yajing. "Bringing it all back home? : a Chinese bank going global." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2011. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/661.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of trust in the global expansion and activities of Chinabank over the past eight, and especially the past two, decades and the associated transformative effects of this emergent geography. Three specific moments of change involving questions of trust are investigated: i) attempts to project the Bank as a legitimate presence in the City of London; ii) the reconciliation of expatriate and local practices of work in the Bank in London; and iii) the transformation of relations of governance within the Bank and between the Bank and its headquarters and the Chinese State in Beijing. The underlying argument of the thesis is that global economic geographies are enabled, in part at least, through social geographies - here social geographies of trust - which are a prerequisite in bridging the differences involved in the processes and relations of globalisation. But, of course, concepts and practices of trust are themselves geographically variable and so globalisation in turn involves negotiations over, and transformations of, trust. Thus the thesis argues that trust is relationally constructed as different conceptualisations and practices of trust interact with, and shape, each other. In this sense, globalisation is a process of hybridisation rather than of flattening. The main contributions of the thesis are i) to explore globalisation from ‘periphery’ to ‘core’; ii) to consider some of the implications of bringing together two very different sets of political economic relations (communist state and market-based capitalist financial relations); and iii) by exploring the nature and significance of trust as a socio-spatial relation, to contribute to the literature on the social conditions of existence (the social geographies) of economic globalisation. In addition, the thesis draws attention to the impact of different orientations/attitudes towards personal trust and regulatory trust in forming financial relations and their complementary role in 3 the making of financial space. Thus the research explores the implications of the working practices of the Bank in London not only for relations between it and its headquarters and the Chinese state in Beijing but for working practices in London in coming to terms with the rapid growth and globalisation of finance in China. Qualitative methods predominate but findings are triangulated across a range of data. Methods employed include semi-structured interviews (within the Bank in London; in its head office and the offices of its supervisory authorities and other state bodies, in Beijing; and with UK clients of the Bank and other leading financial institutions in London); participant observation and textual analyses; and the analysis of published data from a variety of sources.

Abstract:
What happens when a classroom becomes more than just a site of intellectual growth and evolves into a locus of emotional, social, and spiritual transformation? What happens when a student in such a classroom also occupies the role of teacher and desires to reproduce such a transformative environment for his students? In brief, this thesis answers these questions by offering a narrative and critique of my personal "conscientization" via feminism and elucidates the theory behind, my approaches toward, and the results of my bringing graduate-level feminist theory and pedagogy to a middle school English classroom. I examine how my experiences as a student in both the past and the present have merged to shape my work as a teacher and have set me on the path to becoming a professor, not only in the sense of a college teacher as a profession but as a person who professes, who openly declares the truths of my past as both dehumanizer and dehumanized to help others come to critical consciousness. First, I autobiographically critique my learning and assimilation of The Iliad and The Odyssey in middle school, reflecting upon how these works occupied a major part of my indoctrination into the hyper-masculine, white, patriarchal, upper-class dogma of the culture, as well as bringing a feminist perspective to bear upon these personally influential epics. Next, I examine my studies in the University of South Florida's master's program in English literature and, in particular, my direct and life-changing encounter with feminism in a 2009 course in feminist theory, which facilitated a complete re-visioning of my life and led to a personal renaissance. The final part of this circular path leads me back to my teaching of the same classical texts that so greatly influenced me as a young man, and I explain how my transformative experiences with both feminist theory and pedagogy motivated me to distill their critical approaches into a form and format that I have successfully implemented for my middle-school classroom.

hedin, jonas. "William Kennedy’s Ironweed : Francis Phelan’s Purgatorial Journey Back Home." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-755.

Full text
Abstract:

In the essay “William Kennedy’s Ironweed: Francis Phelan’s Purgatorial Journey Back Home” I intend to show that William Kennedy has borrowed his narrative structure and symbolic language in the novel Ironweed from The Divine Comedy. I will also try to show how William Kennedy has used these allusions to enhance the imagery of Ironweed and the protagonist Francis Phelan’s wandering through the novel, and his return home. To accomplish this I will present a detailed comparative analysis of William Kennedy’s Ironweed and Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.

I will begin by showing that Kennedy establishes the protagonist Francis Phelan as a Dante-like figure and a sinner who needs to go through purgatory to redeem himself. Moreover, Kennedy uses Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy’s landscape to enhance the imagery of a journey back home, and by showing that each chapter represents a different level on Mount Purgatory Kennedy makes Albany a symbol of the mountain itself. Details such as the mentioning of the seven deadly sins are also there to make the reader think of Dante and thereby reinforcing the image of The Divine Comedy’s landscape in Francis Phelan’s New York, Albany.

I also demonstrate that Kennedy borrows his symbolic structure from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. For example, the intricate ending of Ironweed where several parallels can be drawn to Purgatory and Paradise reinforces the impression of Francis Phelan’s happiness, that is, a reader who is familiar with The Divine Comedy will appreciate and understand Francis Phelan’s happiness and the journey he has accomplished even more.

Hollows, Joanne. "Bringing it all back home: feminism, gender and lifestyle." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.603495.

Full text
Abstract:
Second-wave feminist identities need to be understood as a product of a specific historical formation. These identities were frequently formed through a rejection of, and in opposition to, 'other' femininities and were often seen as opposed to, and 'outside', popular culture. This selection of publications by Joanne Hollows shows how feminist tastes are based on a rejection of both the' easy' pleasures associated with popular culture and the people who have a taste for these popular forms. The legacy of second-wave feminist thought makes it difficult to think through alternative ways of conceptualizing the relationship between feminism and popular culture. However, there is much to be learned by analyzing how feminism, and 'the feminist', has been produced, negotiated and reproduced within the popular. To do so also involves identifying how the generational politics of feminism produce different relationships with the popular. Just as the identity of the feminist was based on a refusal of the popular, it was also predicated on an escape from 'home' and maintaining a distance from the woman associated with domestic space, 'the housewife'. Not only does this produce particular difficulties for theorizing how elements of feminism might be articulated within domestic popular culture, but it also makes it difficult to conceptualize new domestic femininities that might emerge between the feminist and the housewife. By treating domestic femininities and masculinities historically through looking at case studies of domestic cookery, it becomes possible to identify how elements of feminism have been articulated within popular domestic practices.

Newman-Beinart, Naomi Angela. "Non-adherence to prescribed home exercise in chronic low back pain." Thesis, King's College London (University of London), 2016. https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/nonadherence-to-prescribed-home-exercise-in-chronic-low-back-pain(e64a992a-e4ba-46c6-8955-81d8f36cf480).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Adherence to prescribed home exercise for chronic low back pain (CLBP) is poor and this remains an under-researched area. There is no standard measure of exercise adherence and traditional health behaviour models are limited in their ability to explain non-adherence. This thesis aims to address these issues. Aim: To undertake a review of CLBP literature (Study 1), to develop a new measure (Study 2) and to investigate the role of psychosocial, clinical and executive function factors in explaining variation in exercise adherence in CLBP (Study 3). Design: Study 1 involved systematically reviewing factors associated with adherence to prescribed home exercise in CLBP. In Study 2, the Exercise Adherence Rating Scale (EARS) was developed. Study 3 was a prospective observational study of exercise adherence in a CLBP sample. Results: Study 1 found nine trials providing moderate evidence that higher health locus of control, supervision, participation in an exercise programme and participation in a behaviour change programme incorporating motivational strategies were associated with better exercise adherence in CLBP samples. In Study 2, a 1-factor solution explained 66% of the variance in adherence to exercise. Internal consistency (α = 0.758) and item-response theory methods indicated that EARS reliability was acceptable. In Study 3, longer duration of pain, higher present pain, lower educational level and being female significantly predicted poor adherence behaviour. Executive functions were not predictive of adherence behaviour. Conclusions: Study 1 highlighted a lack of good quality evidence and standardised measures of adherence. The EARS in Study 2 provided a valid and reliable assessment of adherence behaviour in a CLBP sample and now requires further testing. Results of Study 3 suggested factors influencing adherence to prescribed home exercise in patients with CLBP. The inclusion of these factors within health behaviour models may provide better explanatory models of exercise behaviour in CLBP.

Horst, Heather Ayn. "'Back a yaad' : constructions of home among Jamaica's returned migrant community." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2004. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446595/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates return migration among Jamaicans who migrated to the United Kingdom after WWII and retired in Jamaica throughout the 1990s. Focusing upon the processes of rebuilding a life at "home", it examines the ways in which returning migrants utilize material culture to transgress the sense of alienation from land and people in Jamaica and explores the relationship between particular objects of material culture and the politics of identity. Based upon twelve months of ethnographic fieldwork in a central Jamaican town, the study analyzes transformations in returnee's sense of being English and/or Jamaican, from perceiving England as "the mother country" to the frustration and disillusionment felt after migration resulting in a more concrete sense of being black Jamaican immigrants living in England. Upon returning to postcolonial Jamaica, notions of being English and Jamaican are further questioned as returnees come to terms with local Jamaicans categorization of returnees as "English". Returnees seek to construct lifestyles which counteract the years of hard work endured to return and retire in Jamaica, the large houses and consumer goods both assert and assist in the creation of a lifestyle of leisure and enjoyment. Yet, local Jamaican's constant requests for money and goods accompanied by media portrayals of crime produce feelings of vulnerability, resulting in a heightened use of security as well as an increased desire to reintegrate into Jamaican society particularly through patterns of exchange. In this context, funerals assume a prominent role, enabling returnees to literally and symbolically locate a sense of community and return. Funeral participation also aids in counteracting a sense of alienation from land and people by redefining "home" as a spiritual return to heaven, highlighting the dynamic nature of home as a concept and space for negotiating identity.

Larsson, John, and Karl-Linus Blomberg. "Would that be a round trip ticket? : Bringing outsourced functions back home." Thesis, Jönköping University, Jönköping International Business School, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-343.

Full text
Abstract:

Introduction: Outsourcing as a phenomenon has recently gained a lot of attention and is by some even considered as a trend. Traditionally, the functions to outsource have often been activities like computer operations or production with the purpose to cut costs or util-ize on resources not available in-house. The issues of outsourcing are however increasing, making the insight of the sources of competitive advantage and core competences more important than ever. With the rising amount of outsourced functions in firms of today, more and more outsourcing projects tend to end up with poor results. The combination of suppliers failing to live up to the standards set and an increased pressure of cost savings and quality improvements from customers is becoming untenable for many companies. As a result, large efforts are put into coordination and training and some companies even break their outsourcing agreement to either turn to another supplier or bring the function back in-house. Motives for bringing an outsourced function back in-house are often con-cerned with issues of quality and control.

Purpose: The purpose is to determine whether backsourcing is merely a tool to correct implications of unsuccessful outsourcing agreements or if there are other underlying mo-tives to the process.

Method: The study has been conducted according to the qualitative research approach. Empirical data has been collected through personal semi-structured interviews with repre-sentatives from three different companies that recently have backsourced a business func-tion. The empirical data have been analyzed in the light of relevant theories concerning outsourcing and backsourcing.

Analysis: The analysis indicates on both differences and similarities of motives for, and implications due to outsourcing among the investigated companies. The same is evident for the backsourcing of the specific functions.

Conclusions: From the analyzed data, conclusions can be drawn that all the companies suffered from implications from their respective outsourcing agreements and used back-sourcing to compensate for these. However, the process has, in some cases, increased knowledge and made the function perform better once taken back in-house.

Exploration of Titan is one of the primary objectives of the Cassini/Huygens mission Saturn due to launch in 1997. Limited data will be provided by Huygens as it descends to the surface via parachute and by Cassini as it orbits Saturn and occasionally passes near Titan. Interest in Titan is high because of its planet-class size, dense atmosphere, and the possibility of continents and seas. Already, there are discussions for a follow-on mission to Titan. There are several proposed designs such as balloons and boats to explore Titan's ethane seas. In all cases, reliable data links back to Earth are absolutely essential. However, simply increasing the power has its limits due to constraints on launch weights. There are a number of possible options for getting data back from Titan. These alternatives, and their effect on the mission profile are discussed.

Lincoln, Leslie Jeanne. "Paddle to Seattle : a native Washington movement to "Bring them canoes back home"." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42022.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis documents the 1989 Washington Centennial Commissions' Native Canoe Project. Seventeen Western Washington tribes participated in a canoe-oriented cultural heritage renewal movement. The ethnographic setting establishes Native dugouts in their historic social context and presents the classic hull forms of representative canoe types. After a hiatus of several generations of canoe use, many tribes began to reconstruct their disappearing canoeing ways. Through the process of carving and using their dugouts, they have addressed current issues. Canoe racing and voyaging has proven to be effective, culturally relevant alternative to drug and alcohol abuse. Native people reaffirmed access to landing beaches and forest resources and created community carving centers. Case studies of the Lummi, Suquamish, Tulalip, Port Gamble Klallam and Quileute tribes reveal continuity, schisms and the reinvention of Native dugout traditions. The culminating "Paddle to Seattle" voyage illuminates the vital role of these canoes to unite communities and legitimize Indian values. Abundant use of Native commentary from collected oral histories substantiate my interpretations and offer authority to Native perspectives. Ethnopoetic transcriptions express an understanding of these cedar canoes in the enduring Native thoughtworld.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the social and cultural contours of citizenship and nationhood of Kahnawake Mohawks. The central question that I seek to answer is "What other narratives of nationhood and citizenship are there than those of membership in the American or Canadian states?" Mohawks and other Iroquois nations have long asserted their ideological, and in the case of some, economic independence from the governments of Canada and the United States. My multi-sited research illustrates that this historical assertion is more than rhetoric; it is also a practice or " praxis," as Mohawks configure citizenship across the imposed borders that separate their reserves from cities and states from states. This dissertation engages contemporary theories of nationhood, historical and contemporary ethnographic literature on the Iroquois, as well as contemporary literature in political theory and policy to examine the gendered and sometimes racialized contours of Indigenous nationhood and citizenship across borders. Kahnawake Mohawk narratives and the choices that they entail have implications for the way that all "post-colonial" nationals attempt to imagine and construct their place and their membership within and beyond the boundaries of their communities and that of the state.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s military encompasses a wide variety of families who are affected by deployments in multiple and complex ways. Following deployments, families must reconnect in their relationships and reestablish their way of life. Appropriate and effective communication during this time is critical, yet many military couples struggle with this process. Moreover, student service members/veterans and their families are in a unique position. In addition to coping with changes in their marital relationship, student veterans may feel isolated or unsupported on college campuses, often experiencing anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress, or suicidality. The current study seeks to bridge the gap between the military family literature and the student service member/veteran literature by examining how deployment experiences, mental health issues, and communication patterns influence post-deployment relationship adjustment among student veterans. Analyses tested whether communication style and/or current mental health concerns mediate associations between combat experiences and couples’ relationship adjustment, as well as between experiences in the aftermath of battle and relationship adjustment. Results suggest that although posttraumatic stress is significantly related to deployment experiences among student veterans, participants report no significant negative effects of deployment on relationship adjustment. Communication style, however, was significantly associated with relationship adjustment, and a lack of positive communication was found to correlate with PTSD diagnosis. Research and clinical implications are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis investigates the question 'How and why does Martha Rosier, artist and activist, bring the wars of Vietnam and Iraq back home time and again?' The aims of the investigation are to consider the two series of Martha Rosier's photomontages entitled "Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful" (1967 -1972) and "Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful, New Series" (2004 - 2008). The aims of such a consideration include: address of the photomontages themselves asthey relate to Rosier's particular development of a critical and activist photomontage practice (as initially developed in her feminist photomontage series "Beauty Knows No Pain: Body Beautiful" (1965 - 1974)); examination of original source images appropriated by Rosier for the making of her works, citing their original locations (work not undertaken previously by other scholars) and the events, scenes and valences thereof within these original photographs; theoretical propositions for how one can read the critical narratives and operative critiques embodied by Rosier's photomontages; and a consideration of the meta-commentary instantiated by Rosier's renewal of the anti-war photomontage series in light of 'the war on terror'. Results achieved This thesis has achieved a comprehensive overview of Martha Rosier's project as both artist and activist to bring the American wars in Vietnam and Iraq back home to the USas a work of anti-war activism, provoking a conversation with the population whose representatives in government are pursuing these foreign adventures in their names. The thesis achieves propositional readings ofthe theoretical workings of Rosier's images, alongside offering a historical contextualisation of both Rosier's extra-artistic activism and of the events depicted in her works which have not been recorded by other scholars. The researching and recording of original source material appropriated by Rosier in the making of these photomontages, again not recorded by other art historians elsewhere, along with the relevance of the selected source images, has been achieved within this thesis. Furthermore, this thesis has succeeded in postulating original theoretical appreciations of not only Rosier's photomontages in both eras ofthe series, but also ofthe nature of and motivation for her very act of renewal in the second stage ofthe series "Bringing the War Home". This is achieved specifically through my theoretical reading of the series as meta-commentary on the revision isms of American history and present foreign policy decision-making, presented through my concept of the 'reboot', which is developed in sympathetic concert with Rosier's own emphasis on popular culture / mass-media imagery asthe medium for presenting her critique within the series.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Hans deWit
Ethiopia has long been affected by the out flow of its educated citizens. In major host countries, like the United States, the Ethiopian diaspora constitutes a considerable number of highly educated professionals, including those who work in academic and research institutions. Meanwhile, the fast-growing Ethiopian higher education severely suffers from lack of highly qualified faculty. In recent years members of the Ethiopian academic diaspora have been engaged in various initiatives towards supporting the emerging Ethiopian higher education. Yet, these initiatives have been fragmented, individually carried out, and challenged by the lack of a systemic approach, among other things. Further, there are only few studies examining diaspora engagement in the Ethiopian context, much less specific to higher education. The purpose of this research is, therefore, to offer deeper insight into the formation and implementation of transnational engagement initiatives by the Ethiopian academic diaspora. The research explores the motivation for and the modalities of engagement, as well as the enabling and challenging factors. This study employs phenomenological approach and Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice as a lens to analyze data from in-depth interviews with 16 Ethiopian diaspora academics in the US. The research departs from previous works by examining the issues from the perspectives of those who have first-hand experience of the phenomenon. Its findings reveal that transnational engagement among academic diaspora is shaped by complex and multi-layer personal, institutional and broader environmental factors, which transcend common considerations in addressing brain drain

Kruck, Lauren Michelle. "Different Perspectives on the Boomerang: How Adult Daughters and their Parents Experience the Move Back Home." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/56964.

Abstract:
Though the phenomenon of young adults moving in with their parents is not a new one, it is one that has certainly become more common in recent decades. A new life stage of 'emerging adulthood' has become the norm, in which young adults delay marriage and career jobs in order to pursue other goals. This stage is, in part, marked by fluidity in residence. Yet even as a growing number of 'boomerang kids' move back in with their parents, there is a gap in the research regarding this phenomenon's effect on various parts of the family system. This study set out to address this gap by comparing separate interviews from young adult boomerangs and their parents. Findings suggest a disparity between parental and young adult opinions on a variety of topics, most notably: expected household responsibility, parent/child closeness, loss of autonomy, and appreciation. However, similarities emerged regarding the parental home as a safe haven, the arrangement as providing financial security, and the fact that all adult children reported being ready to move out. Ideally, the findings presented here will help illuminate both the similarities and disparities in the experiences of parents and their young adult children who return after launch, in order to increase empathy and promote a healthy family system.

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-176133.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how Swedish-based MNCs handle their repatriation process with a focus on knowledge transfer upon return. Moreover, the study reviewed whether a global mindset is present or not in the companies and if it is associated with how repatriates’ knowledge is utilized. The study was conducted through interviews with seven repatriates and six HR managers in six different MNCs. The findings show a lack of awareness about what the repatriates have learnt during their assignments, and that there are no routines in place for capturing the knowledge upon return. Also, it identifies a gap between the companies’ and the repatriates’ views about the goals of the assignment and the value of the overall international experience. Finally, the study suggests various improvements for companies on how to better utilize their resources and enhance their global mindset in order to create a sustainable competitive advantage.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the role of religion in the everyday, transnational lives of Brazilian migrants in London and on their return to Brazil. It contributes to an emerging body of work that recognises the importance of religion within transnational processes and foregrounds the experiences of Brazilians in London, a growing yet still largely invisible new migrant group in London. While the study explores the role of religious institutions in the transnational lives of Brazilian migrants, it works with the notion of religion as lived experience to give due weight to the perspectives of migrants themselves. It examines the ways in which migrants negotiate their religious beliefs and practices in different places and create new connections between them. The study draws on a qualitative methodological framework, which included 78 in-depth interviews with Brazilian migrants in London and on their return to Brazil, religious leaders, and migrants’ family members. It also involved extended participant observation in one Catholic and one evangelical Protestant church in London, as well as at community events and in migrants’ domestic spaces in London and five ‘sending’ towns in Brazil. Empirically, the project reveals some of the ways in which religion functions transnationally through examining how religious institutions and their leaders adapt to new contexts, and how religion becomes a crucial resource for migrants at all stages of their migration experience, including on their return. With reference to migrants’ own stories, it explores the ways that they draw on religion to cope with particular challenges related to migration, but also how engagement with the spiritual enables migrants to give meaning to their experiences. The thesis develops the concept of transnational religious spaces to highlight the ways in which religion permeates the spaces of transnationalism and functions within and across multiple scales, including the global, the local, the institutional, the individual, the corporeal and the virtual. These spaces incorporate those who migrate, those who return ‘back home’, and migrants’ families who experience the absence of their loved ones. Yet while transnational religious spaces can enable migrants to create alternative spaces of belonging, I argue that they can also be exclusionary, creating new barriers at the same time as opening up existing ones. I also propose a related concept of religious remittances whereby changing religious practices and beliefs are transferred across borders, adapting to new contexts.

Abstract:
My thesis examines changing conceptions of colonial, artistic and female identity. I build on the work of previous critics (including Ash, Parkin-Gounelas, Pride, Sandbrook, Wevers), but I seek to place renewed emphasis on literary-historical context and questions of aesthetic value. My introductory chapter grounds the twentieth-century works in literary analyses of a sample of published nineteenth-century accounts by British women of their emigration to New Zealand. These women align expatriation with bereavement, yet advocate the colony's new egalitarianism. The chapter ends with a reading of Victorian fiction by 'Alien' (Louisa Baker: once popular, but now seldom read), for whom expatriation was already a complex matter. For 'Alien', the New Zealander's return to England connotes artistic selfbetterment and women's entry into valuable work: themes crucial to Mansfield, in whose early prose expatriation represents similar liberation. However, connections between travel and social freedom become increasingly questionable; Mansfield's stories illustrate the restrictiveness of European sexual moeurs, establishing disturbing correspondences between expatriation, the lost past, the undermining of identity, and death. Hyde takes up Mansfield's preoccupations, in works which richly dramatise the scope and limits of expatriation for a colonial woman artist. The inclusion of backmigration in her narratives reconciles expatriation with rising literary nationalism. Adcock's initial poetry repeats Mansfield's adolescent depiction of New Zealand as stifling. Although her stance on the relationship between self and homeland grows more conflicted throughout her career, she rejects Hyde's idea of redemptive backmigration. Return merely leads to reiteration of insoluble debates over identity. Janet Frame's novels parody - and repudiate - previous perspectives on expatriation. Her autobiography partially returns to modernist structures (expatriation as arrival at self-possession), yet her total oeuvre finds its only possibility of home in interiority. . I conclude with a brief examination of fiction by Kirsty Gunn and Emily Perkins, both of whom use expatriation to signify moral uncertainty. My study aims to deepen a sense of the intertextual relationships between the selected authors. I hope that my account opens new ways of interpreting the links between history and gender in narratives of leaving home.

Schmitz, Tyler. "Effectiveness of Home Directional Preference Exercise/Stretch Program for Reducing Disability in Mechanical Chronic Low Back Pain in a Residency Clinic, a Quality Improvement Project." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/asrf/2020/presentations/19.

Full text
Abstract:
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is defined as pain, muscle tension, or stiffness localized below the costal margin and above the inferior gluteal folds, with or without sciatica, that lasts for at least twelve weeks.1 It is the leading cause of disability and loss of productivity in the United States.2 There is conflicting evidence on what is the most effective nonpharmacological treatment for CLBP. Many studies have shown that any general exercise routine is effective for improving symptoms, but the literature provides conflicting evidence about what specific type of exercise is best.3 A few studies have demonstrated decreased pain and disability with supervised directional preference exercise routines compared to non-directional preference routines. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a home directional preference exercise/stretch program for reducing disability in mechanical CLBP in patients in a residency clinic and to expand on the limited evidence of directional preference exercise effectiveness. Unlike other directional preference interventional studies, this program’s simplicity and convenience of performing at home potentially could increase patient compliance and therefore effectiveness. Patients were screened at a routine clinic visit and considered eligible if they had a known diagnosis of CLBP. They were excluded if they were in an acute exacerbation. Participating patients were categorized on directional range of motion preference based on their physical exam, either flexion or extension, whichever improved their pain. They were given a simple routine with instructions and pictures consisting of three exercises and stretches that emphasized their specific directional preference. Subjects performed three sets of each routine two to three days per week. Degree of disability score was measured at initial visit by completing the gold standard disability index questionnaire, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Degree of disability was reassessed with ODI at a follow-up assessment four to eight weeks later with five follow-up questions regarding compliance and acute exacerbation. Patients were excluded if they were in an acute exacerbation. Pre-interventional disability scores were then compared to post-interventional disability scores. Twelve total patients enrolled in the program. Seven were lost to follow up. Five completed the study at the proper follow up interval; however, one was in an acute exacerbation so was excluded. Of the four patients included, two had extension and two had flexion preference. Three out of four patients had decreased disability scores at follow up. Total post-intervention score on ODI improved by an average of 10 points compared to pre-intervention score for the patients who improved. The most improved post-interventional ODI score category was walking and changing degree of pain. Seventy-five percent of the patients who completed the study had an improvement in their CLBP disability score. However, due to a small sample size and study power, the results are not statistically significant. Therefore, a conclusion cannot be appropriately drawn about the effectiveness of performing a home directional preference exercise/stretch program for reducing disability in mechanical CLBP in patients at a residency clinic. Nevertheless, the results are promising and deserve further investigation with a larger sample size.

Abstract:

Historically the research of International Business and the internationalisation of companies have been concentrated to large, mature companies with extensive resources to deploy in new markets. Since the 90’s a big field of research has though been on so called born globals, or international new ventures. In this thesis I will take up where this research is today and I will deal with the issue of new entrepreneurial ventures that internationalise from a very early stage of their existence From the theory five factors are retracted; 1) The Entrepreneur; 2) Identified Opportunities; 3) Entry/ Establishing mode; 4) Deployed Resources and 5) Local Challenges and from this the theoretical model is created. The following empirical study is made on Swedish entrepreneurs that have established in China during the last decade and the model seeks to answer why and how the entrepreneur established in China. The model is constructed to be usable for research on entrepreneurs from any market entering any other market. This specific study on Swedish entrepreneur in China merely fills the function of illustrating the use of the model, as the sample is too small to generalize.

Abstract:
Due to the increased number of the amount of asylum-seekers that have migrated to Sweden lately, the topic has received increased attention. This has contributed to housing shortage and policy reforms for new migrants to arise in order to ensure that everybody gets housing. Asylum seekers often experience more difficult patterns to housing, and for LGBT asylum seekers especially since they are such a marginalised group in our society already. Housing is an important part in the initial settlement stage and good housing enables successful resettlement and that will help with the integration process. The aim of this thesis is to look at LGBT asylum seekers mobility and what constrains and opportunities they face in that process. To answer these questions qualitative method and semi-structured life story interviews have been performed with twelve LGBT asylum seekers. The result of these interviews has been presented around four different concepts that were factors contributing to their mobility. These four concepts that were found in the interviews was forced migration, homophobia, social network and freedom. These findings should be of interest for further studies in order for LGBT asylum seekers mobility patters to become more safe and secure.

Abstract:
The 1990s saw significant increases in commercial bank membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) System and extensive growths in FHLB assets and outstanding advances. Since FHLB policies may enable risk-taking behavior by the System's member institutions, this research evaluates the impact of the FHLBs on community bank members, local consumers, and local markets. Results suggest that commercial bank liquidity is enhanced by and managed with the use of System advances, and investments in loans and mortgage-related assets increase with FHLB participation, particularly by small bank members. Credit quality and bank financial conditions improve after participating in the FHLB program, and cost savings from borrowing System funds may contribute to higher rates paid on deposits in local markets. However, banks with greater exposure to interest rate risk are more likely to become FHLB members, and interest rate risk exposure further increases after membership attainment, as the amount of advances borrowed increases, and the longer members remain in the FHLB program. Long-term advances have not been used to lengthen liability duration to offset growth in long-term asset investments, which makes the FHLB System more highly susceptible to rising rates.

Abstract:

Homer's Odyssey is a foundational work for the western cultural and literary tradition. It has been translated into English many times over, which reflects a certain enduring relevance of the work and its characters. This thesis examines twelve or so English translations of the Odyssey, from those of Alexander Pope and George Chapman to the modern works of Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald, in their interpretations of specific moments where the hero interacts with Nausikaa, Kalypso, Athena, and Penélopê. Traditionally, although the women of the Odyssey are considered to be active and relevant to Odysseus' journey, they also pose considerable danger to his quest for Ithaka. However, by juxtaposing and comparing various translations from different time periods, we enrich our understanding of the astounding agency these women demonstrate in facilitating the hero's return. As opposed to mere tools that Odysseus utilizes as a means to an end, these women actively interfere in his journey to ensure his safety and bring to fruition the ultimate goal of restoring order on Ithaka

As part of Phase III of the U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank program, drogued drifters and dye tracer were released into the pycnocline on the southern flank of Georges Bank to measure advective and diffusive transport relative to the tidal mixing front in May 1999. Potential density measurements placed the tidal mixing front around the 50-55 m isobath on the southern flank. Drogued drifter movement relative to the front was on the order of the drifter's slip velocity and therefore did not support the existence of a mean, advective flow. No movement relative to the front of the dye patch center of mass also indicated a lack of advective flow. Diffusive transport did occur as the dye patch spread laterally both toward and away from the front much as would be predicted by the diffusion relationship of Okubo (1971), who summarized diffusion experiments in the surface ocean. The dye did not spread symmetrically, but was rather elongated along the isobaths. This can be attributed to vertical shear in the along-isobath current that was measured by the shipboard ADCP.

Abstract:
Crossing the Sahara to reach Libya for the purpose of onward migration across the Mediterranean to Italy is what in Gambia is called “The Back Way”. The aim of this study is to examine the ambitions and reasons behind a migratory project from The Gambia to Europe. By identifying the key constituents of a migration culture, I can get a broader insight into why the celebration of migration is evident, and how the ‘story of Europe’ is shaped. I have interviewed Gambians who are geographically in different places and who all find themselves in different life trajectories, most of them connected to migration. My conversations about migration, “The Back Way” and Europe stretches from interviews with repatriates, aspiring migrants and non-migrants. I have also interviewed Gambians in the Diaspora. In this study, I found a strong societal expectation and hope towards both migration and the diaspora which in return caused certain diasporic behavior that painted a misleading picture of Europe. I also found a strong hope and resilient aspirations in terms of social status and recognition believed to be attained easier as a migrant coming back from Europe.

. Systematic differences in trace element compositions (rare earth element (REE), heavy metal, metalloid concentrations) of seafloor vent fluids and related deposits from hydrothermal systems in the Manus back-arc basin (Eastern Manus Basin, EMB and Manus Spreading Center, MSC) are used to investigate processes that affect their formation. Processes responsible for observed differences in fluids and deposits from distinct geologic settings include (a) fluid-rock interaction (with temperature, pressure and crustal composition as variables), (b) magmatic acid volatile input and, (c) local seawater entrainment and mixing with hydrothermal fluids, coupled with sulfide precipitation and metal remobilization. REE distributions in vent fluids in the Manus Basin exhibit a wide range of chondrite-normalized patterns that contrast with the relatively uniform distributions observed in mid-ocean ridge vent fluids. This heterogeneity is attributed to marked differences in fluid pH and fluoride and sulfate concentrations that significantly affect REE solubility. The data indicate that REEs can be used as indicators of the styles of magmatic acid volatile input in back-arc hydrothermal systems. Anhydrite in deposits record the same range of REE patterns, suggesting that REE distributions preserved in anhydrite can be used as indicators of past magmatic acid volatile input. Vent fluid heavy metal and metalloid concentrations also exhibit considerable differences. High metal concentrations in EMB versus MSC vent fluids reflect low pH, largely from input of magmatic acid volatiles (indicated by fluoride concentrations greater than seawater). In EMB, metal concentrations are locally affected by dissolution of previously deposited sulfide owing to low pH conditions affected by magmatic acid volatile input or seawater entrainment and mixing with hydrothermal fluid that leads to sulfide precipitation and secondary acidity generation.
(cont.) Massive sulfide deposits in the Manus Basin exhibit a wide range of mineral compositions and heavy metal enrichments. The formation of Zn-rich (sphalerite/wurtzite) deposits in the MSC and of Cu-Fe and Cu-As-rich (chalcopyrite, tennantite) deposits in the EMB reflects differences in the conditions of sulfide precipitation (temperature, pH) and in metal concentrations. The data suggest that heavy metal and metalloid distributions in massive sulfide deposits can be used as indicators of the conditions of vent deposit formation.

The goal of this dissertation is to shed some light on three separate aspects of the financial system that can lead to greater instability in the banking sector and greater macroeconomic volatility. The starting point of the Great Recession was the collapse of the banking sector in late 2007; in the subsequent months, liquidity evaporated in many markets for short term funding. The process of creating liquidity carried out by the banking system involves the transformation of long term illiquid assets into short term liquid liabilities. This engine functions properly as long as cash lenders continue to roll over short term funding to banks; whenever these lenders fear that banks will not be able to pay back these obligations, they immediately stop funding banks' short term liabilities. This makes banks unable to repay maturing short term debt, which leads to large spikes in default risk. This is often referred to as a modern bank run. Virtually all the theories of bank runs suggest that the severity of a run depends on how well lenders can coordinate their beliefs: whenever a lender expects many others to run, he becomes more likely to run as well. In a joint work with Emanuele Brancati, the first chapter of my dissertation, we empirically document the role of coordination in explaining bank runs and default risk. We establish two new results. First, when information is more precise and agents can better coordinate their actions, a change in market expectations has a larger impact on default risk; this implies that more precise information increases the vulnerability or instability of the banking system. This result has a clear policy implication: if policymakers want to stabilize the banking system they should promote opacity instead of transparency, especially during periods of financial turmoil. Second, we show that when a bank is expected to perform poorly, lower dispersion of beliefs actually increases default risk; this result is in contrast with standard theories in finance and can be rationalized by thinking about the impact that more precise information has on the ability of creditors to coordinate on a bank run. Another aspect of the banking system that is creating a lot of instability in Europe is the so called "disastrous banks-sovereign nexus": many banks in troubled countries owned a disproportionately large amount of domestic sovereign bonds; therefore, in case of a default of the sovereign country, the whole domestic banking sector would incur insurmountable losses. This behavior is puzzling because these banks in troubled countries would greatly benefit from having a more diversified asset portfolio, but instead decide to load up with domestic sovereign debt only. In a joint work with Filippo De Marco, the second chapter of my dissertation, we show that banks receive political pressures from their respective governments to load up on domestic sovereigns. First, we show that banks with a larger fraction of politicians as shareholders display greater home bias. More importantly, we exploit the fact that low-performing banks received liquidity injections by their domestic governments to show that, among those banks, only the "political banks" drastically increased their home bias upon receiving government help. Furthermore, it appears that the extent of political pressure on banks is much stronger on those "political banks" belonging to troubled countries. These findings suggest that troubled countries that would need to pay a high premium to issue new debt force their "political banks" to purchase part of the debt issuance. This greater risk-synchronization can create a dangerous loop of higher sovereign default risk leading to insolvency of the domestic banking system, which in turn would require a bail-out from the local government, further exacerbating the sovereign de- fault risk. Finally, the third chapter of my dissertation, a joint work with Susanto Basu, investigates the sources of excess consumption volatility in emerging markets. It is a well documented fact that, in emerging markets, consumption is more volatile than output whereas the opposite is true in developed economies. We propose an explanation for this phenomenon that relies on a specific form of financial markets incompleteness: we assume that households would always want to front-load consumption and they can borrow from abroad up to a fraction of the value of posted collateral. With the value of collateral being procyclical, households are able to increase borrowing during an expansion and ultimately consume more than they produce; this mechanism is then able to generate a ratio of consumption volatility to output volatility grater than one. Most importantly, the model delivers the implication that a better ability to borrow vis-a-vis the same value of collateral generates greater relative consumption volatility. We then bring this model's implication to the data and find empirical support for it. We proxy the ability to borrow with various measures of effectiveness of lending regulation and more standard indicators of financial development. Consistent with the model's implication, more lending friendly regulation leads to greater relative consumption volatility in emerging markets; moreover, this link breaks down among developed countries. In addition, among emerging countries, it appears that deeper domestic capital markets have a destabilizing effect in terms of greater relative consumption volatility while a more developed domestic banking system does not exerts any such detrimental effect

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Joint Program in Physical Oceanography (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences; and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), 1999.
Includes bibliographical references.
The thesis investigates the circulation at a 76-m deep study site on the southern flank of Georges Bank, a shallow submarine bank located between the deeper Gulf of Maine and the continental slope. Emphasis is placed on the vertical structure of the bottom boundary layer driven by the semidiurnal tides and the flow field's response to wind forcing. The observational analysis presented here is based on a combination of moored array and bottom tripod-mounted current, temperature, conductivity, and meteorological data taken between February and August 1995. Results from the bottom boundary layer analysis are compared to numerical model predictions for tidal flow over rough bottom topography. The flow response to wind forcing is examined and brought into context with the existing understanding of the wind-induced circulation in the Georges Bank region. Particular attention is given to the vertical distribution of the wind-driven currents, whose variation with background stratification is discussed and compared to observations from open ocean studies.

For a long time, studies related to managers had been limited, partly, due to the reputation of representatives and defenders of the corporation`s best interests, which they had for society. Recently, with productive restructuration, the management category, once preserved, reaches the position of victim of instability and of work intensification. This situation is particularly evident in managers that work with the financial sector, that due to its high competition, specific of this sector, are submitted to a constant dose of pressure for results. These considerations have motivated the present research, that has as its main goal to analyze the relationship between the work and health of managers from public and private banks, situated in the city of João Pessoa PB, and as specific goals to identify the procedures for insertion into workforce and professional graduation into management career; investigate the content and peculiarities specific of a management position; specify the conditions and work organization for bank managers; identify the sources of suffering/ pleasure at work, as well as the dynamics of notoriety; analyze the procedures adopted to mature the managers into the relationship between work and private life; describe the process health-disease in managers, in relation to their activity. The theoretical basis of this study gathers contributions from Ergology; Work Psychodynamics; Ergonomy of Activity and Clinics of Activity. As for the Method, with predilection to semi-structured interviews, focusing on the interest to access experiences, singularities and perspectives from bank managers in relation to their work. Sixteen main managers and intermediate managers from public and private banks in João Pessoa have collaborated to this research. Data analysis has been conducted throughout thematic content analysis. Considering what should be mentioned as Results, we identified that the goal management regulates the activity of managers daily and for some the deadlines can be suffocating. As sources of suffering, managers point out lack of appraisal from superiors and society; bad relationship with work colleagues/ team; discharges and consequences from Work Organization (labor hours, pressure for results, decisions without autonomy and system failures). As main sources of pleasure in management positions, they mentioned the appraisal from the work colleagues, clients and society; and the wages. In this panorama of difficulties, contradictions and surprises, the pairs show up as an important learning instrument and tutorship, with the exchange of their practical knowledge. About health, we identified that the main symptom related to management work would be Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, spinal cord stress, Gastrointestinal (GI) problems, (ulcers, gastritis, lack of appetite), high cholesterol, eyesight problems and dermatitis, and also psychic syndromes: anxiety, irritability, sleep changes (insomnia and nightmares with work), depression, tension, stress and lack of concentration. Another element raised up in this research was risk related to financial operations as well as the risk to personal security (kidnapping and robbery); what results in insecurity to managers and their families. We observed also that, in many cases, there`s a negative influence of work in family relationship, due to the fact that managers deal with a huge load of work and responsibility, which always brings them back home tired and preoccupied. Nonetheless, the feeling of having to be available anytime results in leaving the family as second best.
