Abstract:
The stories in this collection reflect the absurdities of contemporary American family life, and the particularly distressing economic conditions of the present moment. These stories often employ absurdist elements. Because of the personal history that informs my work, realism does not seem an appropriate form for me. My oldest son, in whom my emotional well-being is heavily invested, is autistic. He is not “normal"? in a way that others would understand as “normal."? Parenting a child with special needs changes the way a marriage operates, deforming it. The personal experience that drives these stories often seems fantastical even to me. I don’t write about my personal experiences, but I write about the impressions that those experiences make upon me. In this way, my work is descriptive rather than didactic.

Furuta, Marie. "Women's health after having a baby : exploring the impact of severe maternal morbidity on psychological and physical health at 6-8 weeks postpartum." Thesis, King's College London (University of London), 2012. https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/womens-health-after-having-a-baby(c65c498c-d801-4c7a-bab8-aa20e7ee22eb).html.

Abstract:
Background: The incidence of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) is increasing in high-income countries as a consequence of increased obstetric intervention and increasingly complex medical needs of women who become pregnant. The most commonly reported SMM in the UK includes postpartum haemorrhage and hypertensive disorders. Access to emergency obstetric care means that for the majority of UK women, SMM is unlikely to result in loss of life. However, little was known about the impact on postnatal morbidity. Aim: To assess the impact of SMM (defined as major obstetric haemorrhage, severe hypertensive disorders, critical care unit admission) on maternal health, focusing particularly on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms at 6-8 weeks postpartum. Method: A prospective cohort study was undertaken of women who gave birth over six months in 2010 in one inner city maternity unit in England. Data on health outcomes were collected on 1824 women using self-administered questionnaires at 6 – 8 weeks postpartum (response rate=53%). The questionnaire included several validated measures to assess aspects of postnatal health and well-being. Multivariable logistic regression analysis examined the relationship between SMM and PTSD adjusting for potential confounders and differences in other postnatal outcomes between women with and without SMM. Results: There was a higher risk of PTSD symptoms following SMM (intrusion: OR=2.22, 95%CI=1.26-3.93, p=0.006; avoidance: OR=3.33, 95%CI=2.06-5.40, p<0.001; both intrusion and avoidance: OR=3.22, 95%CI=1.62-6.43, p=0.001). Women’s sense of control during labour and birth and neonatal outcomes contributed to the risk of PTSD symptoms. There were no statistically significant differences in other mental outcomes, however women with SMM had poorer physical health than women without SMM. Associations between SMM, breastfeeding practice and health service use were inconsistent across indicators of SMM. Conclusions: Findings have important implications for women's health, and the content and organisation of maternity services. Women and clinicians should be aware that SMM can trigger symptoms of PTSD, with further work required to promote care to prevent these symptoms.

Call, Whitney Marissa. "Rae, Baby." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3413.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a young adult fictional novel from the perspective of Rachel Jackson, or Rae, a seventeen year-old girl with Williams Syndrome, a rare developmental disorder caused by missing genes on chromosome 7 that causes those with it to lack logical connections, yet possess very gregarious, social, and musical personalities. Think of it as an inverted form of autism. At the genesis of the novel, Rae becomes pregnant. Upon misunderstanding her mother's sugar-coated reasoning for giving the baby up for adoption, Rae spends the novel trying to find a man to marry so that, in her understanding, she may keep her child. Along her journey, Rae meets Theo, a well-meaning Christian boy, who appears to be a possible match. Rae falls in love with Theo and gets into various kinds of trouble as she discovers how to take care of herself as well as how to accept herself, disorder and all. Along with her hardworking mother, her feisty grandmother, and her sassy little sister, Rae endeavors this bildungsroman to discover who she is and how she fits into society.

Sometimes one get sucked in old thinking which results in that the development brakes down. This is exactly what has happened in the industry Baby Versatile Concept will enter. With innovative solutions on elementary problems and new developed functions the marked not yet seen will the product take land. Though the problem already from start had high potential it was no surprise that, by the realization of the ideas in mars, interested venture capital of four hundred thousand Swedish kronor. Already by the start of the project a concept patent was planned and will now be realized. A Swedish corporation awaits and presentation at the world’s biggest child fair is already planned.

Baby Versatile Concept will enter a market with strongly established companies and faithful customers. The reason might seem strange, but after understanding of the resending development and failures of solving elementary problems within the business, it gives meaning. The rapport will successively give understanding for the projects great potential and most likely success.

Abstract:
BALM OF GILEAD is a collection of poetry that explores the speaker’s rediscovery of love and spiritual meaning in the years after his recovery from addiction and the loss of a parent. BALM OF GILEAD fits within the English poetic tradition of fastening ineffable sacred experience into more personal lyric modes, an inheritance dating not only to the works of John Donne, George Herbert, and Gerard Manley Hopkins, but to the Psalms of David. The often-confessional poems in BALM OF GILEAD borrow from the free verse and emotional urgency of Denis Johnson; the broken sonnets of Molly Peacock; and the devotional rhetorical posture of Maurice Manning. Moreover, BALM OF GILEAD orders poems through imagistic and thematic associations to document the complex means through which the speaker experiences his conversion away from the certainty of addiction and grief and into the unsure but redemptive footing of love and faith.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, many parametric systems support history-based , constraint-based and feature-based modelling. Unfortunately, most systems fail during the reevaluation phase when various kind of topological changes occur. This issue is known as “persistent naming”. It refers to the problem of identifying entities in an initial parametric model and matching them in the reevaluated model. Several solutions have been proposed to solve this problem, but they remain insufficient. In this thesis, we focus on the persistent and homogeneous naming of entities in any dimension (vertices, edges, aggregates of edges, faces; aggregates of faces (“shells”), volumes, aggregates of volumes, etc) and entities resulting from the intersection of non-planar objects. To do that, we propose a hierarchical platform which gathers, by relations of aggregations, entities of any dimension. Our idea is then, to begin by naming (i. E. ) to characterize and to map) the smaller usable entities: the edges. The management of names of the edges is mainly carried out by a graph tracing the evolution of these entities during the process of parametric modelling. Then, we used the computed matching between these edges by exploiting the hierarchical and aggregative structure of the topological model, in order to deduce the matching between the entities of higher dimension. Our solution is implemented on a geometric kerned based on the generalized maps model

Abstract:
For my bachelor's project, I am confronting the feelings of being transnationally adopted. I do not see adoption as a ”win-win” situation, and I would like people to both think critically about it and question its glorification. As a POC-child myself who grew up with white parents, colorblindness has made my existence rather difficult to deal with. Plagued with feelings I did not understand at the time, I became an isolated island. I want to visualize the feeling of estrangement and alienation from your own body and frightened to drown in your own skin. I have often felt the need to unzip my skin suit and to leave it in a pile on the floor, next to my trousers. In this project I am growing my own skin in a vat, or more precisely, I am growing a kombucha culture in tea and sugar. During the fermentation process, the kombucha culture creates a cellulose material that resembles human flesh. The process is slow, and the development of the material requires a lot of love and nutrition. In return, I get a self-produced material that allows me to work independently. My final piece communicates how it feels to not feel compatible with the body that encases you, as a result of the norms that are written onto your skin.

Wolfson, David R. "Biomechanics of shaken baby syndrome." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11217/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the first part of this work, an Anthropometric Test Dummy (ATD) was used to obtain torso acceleration data for Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). These data were used to drive computational simulations of SBS, in studies of the effect of neck stiffness and head-torso impact on injury risk. Finally, physical models were used to investigate the strain induced in brain tissue during shaking. Clinical literature describes victims of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) as young infants with life-threatening brain injuries, and poor long-term outcome. However, biomechanical studies using ATI)s to study head motion during shaking have been inconclusive about the capacity for shaking alone to cause these injuries 11,21. This work comprises a series of investigations into these conflicting findings. Torso acceleration data for SBS, obtained using a specially constructed ATD, were found to be consistent with previous findings. The data were used to simulate shaking in computational studies of SBS, using Rigid Body Models (RBM) of the infant head and neck. Parametric studies were used to investigate the importance of neck stiffness in assessing the injury capacity of SBS, and showed that in order to exceed current injury criteria for SBS, impact was required. Head torso impact was then simulated, and although this resulted in higher injury risk than shaking alone, criteria for injuries associated with SBS were not reached. Since these investigations did not predict brain injury in cases of SBS without impact, the origins of injury criteria were reviewed. It was found that they are derived from single high energy events, which is distinct from the type of motion in SBS. In order to establish if cyclic, low-energy motion contributes to brain injury in SBS, Physical Continuum Modelling was used to study strain in brain tissue during shaking. A test rig was constructed to shake silicone gel models, and high-speed video used to capture the motion of optical markers with in the gel. Their movement was tracked using optical flow methods, and Green-Lagrangian strain derived by tensor algebra. No evidence was found to indicate a build up in strain between cycles, but published critical strains for damage to neural tissue were exceeded. Although shaking alone was not found not induce head motion in excess of brain injury criteria, tissue damage criteria were exceeded. The application of current brain injury criteria to SBS maybe therefore be inappropriate.

Berry, Emily. "'_____' : Elegy's Ghost ; and, Stranger, Baby." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2017. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67859/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises a creative and critical exploration of grief, loss and absence in what I call elegiac writing. The critical portion of the thesis, ‘____’: Elegy’s Ghost, marks out the terms of my creative work, by examining how other contemporary writers have addressed these themes and by considering the uses and limitations of ‘elegy’ as a formal category. My particular interest is in writings that embark from a particular loss to explore loss itself as a concept beyond (or alongside) its object and how this manifests in language. In chapter one I lay the groundwork for my study, which goes on to closely focus on elegiac works by three writers, Kristin Prevallet, Anne Carson and Noelle Kocot. This includes an overview of the history and evolution of elegy, looking at both the literary background and the influence of psychoanalytic writings in the genre, in order to position my argument. I maintain, for example, that Freud’s ‘Mourning and Melancholia’ has been profoundly misinterpreted. I argue that contemporary writers exploring grief often use the term ‘elegy’ ambivalently, as evidenced by their engagement with the concept in their work. My term ‘elegiac writing’ seeks to acknowledge this ambivalence in writings which – in keeping with the ‘vexed experience’ of writing about grief – wrestle with both content and form. Chapters two, three and four are each devoted to examining a single elegiac work, considering the different ways loss can be registered in language through, for example, holes, gaps, negation and obscurity. My poetry collection Stranger, Baby, written in conversation with the creative and critical works examined here, is an encounter with my own experience of grief and the process of writing about it. I conclude the critical portion of the thesis by reflexively examining this process and its relationship to my critical research.

In this word, we did a detailed study of the Baum-Bott s theorem in two situations. To do this, we examine this theorem in [2] and its proof given by S. S. Chern using methods of differential geometry, in which case the non-degenerated singularities for one-dimensional holomorphic foliation. Then use the article [31] of M. Soares, where he retraces the Chern s proof with a slight change, thus eliminating the possibility of non-degenerated. The result of great importance because it is applied to meromorphic vector fields, which are abundant and generate one-dimensional singular holomorphic foliations in compact manifolds. As a way to apply this result, we deal with the problem of Poincare in [28] to limit the degree of an invariant curve depending on the degree of the foliation. This problem was motivated by the work of Darboux with respect to algebraic integrability foliations in [13]. We gathered the results of Cerveau and Lins Neto in [12] and also M.Carnicer in [9] about the problem of Poincare, that were introduced about 100 years later the work of Poincaré. Finally we also explored the contribution of M. Soares to this problem in [32].

Full text
Abstract:
Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a potentially lethal form of child abuse. Primary prevention efforts have been targeted towards educating the general population, especially pregnant women and new parents, about the dangers of shaking. It is hypothesized that there are identifiable perinatal risk fadors for children that make them more at risk for injury from SBS than other forms of Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). All hospitalized children with suspected AHT (n=206) over a 14-year period who were referred to a multidisciplinary child protection center, were identified. The records of 24 children were not included in the study because they were not available for review, the child did not have a primary head injury, or the child was adopted and birth records were not available. Nonaccidental injury was confirmed in 116 of the remaining children. These included 72 (62%) children fitting SBS criteria, and 44 (38%) children identified as having other AHT. Case analysis included review of hospital and multidisciplinary child protection center records. The SBS and AHT groups were compared to separate perinatal risk fadors that might assist in identifying children at increased risk for SBS. Results of the analysis demonstrated that there was no significant difference between groups evident in the perinatal history. These preliminary findings support the follOWing conclusion that in contrast to many published reports, the perinatal information on the child did not provide significant pre-injury risk identifiers. It was concluded that changes in early educational programs and media campaigns are needed to reduce the sequalae of head trauma in infants and children. Programs must focus on AHT in general, rather than only SBS.

Rock, Marilyn Osborne. "Images of aging--Baby Boomer style." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3561081.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine the images of aging of a small sample of Early Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1951. The Baby Boomers are a generation consisting of those born between 1946 and 1964. This study focuses on a narrower range of birth years in order to capture the images of aging of those now 60 and over who came of age in the 1960s and early 1970s. They represent the first wave of the Baby Boom Generation to reach age 65, society's marker of "old age." Baby Boomers are the largest generation in history and currently 10,000 of them are turning 65 every day. The questions posed in this study were to explore how these Early Baby Boomers expect to age, how their generational experience influences their image of aging, and how that image differs from that of previous generations.

Using a phenomenological and hermeneutical research method, eight men and eight women with like ethnic, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics were interviewed. Through recordings and verbatim transcriptions the collective meaning of life, aging influences, fears, and expected life spans were determined. The collective results were compared to literature of aging stereotypes of previous generations. This select group reported that they will not age and are surprised when experiencing small signs of aging. Work is what brings meaning to their lives and they have no plans of retiring. They expect to maintain control over the length and quality of their lives. These Early Baby Boomers expect to establish a new image of aging.

As the numbers of Baby Boomers age and lifespan lengthens, unavoidable losses will occur. Researchers predict an increase in depression, addiction, and dementia. The Early Baby Boomer expects their needs to be met and as those losses occur they will increasingly seek mental health professionals to "fix" their emotional responses. It is important for mental health professionals to understand the unique generational lens from which Boomers view aging in order to provide quality assessment, recommendations, referral, and treatment.

Key words: boomer; aging; generation; image; mental health; retirement; lifespan.

Morison, Christopher Neil. "The dynamics of shaken baby syndrome." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2002. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/64/.

Full text
Abstract:
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a form of child abuse estimated to occur to one in 20,000 babies and presumed to occur when a carer cannot cope with a constantly crying child and so gives it a sharp shake. This causes the brain to move within the skull, stretching and possibly tearing the veins that bridge the fluid filled gap. To better understand this condition, experiments were performed to measure the mechanical properties of bridging veins followed by detailed mathematical modelling of the motion of a baby’s brain in response to shaking. Few finite element models of shaken baby syndrome exist, and those either ignore the fluid surrounding the brain or model it as a soft solid. The importance of modelling the fluid properly is demonstrated, and the reliability of MSC.Dytran’s fluid-solid interaction modelling is confirmed. The first three-dimensional finite element model of shaken baby syndrome which accurately includes the cerebrospinal fluid is created and used to estimate tolerance criteria for causing subdural haematoma by shaking. This research concludes that shaking of a baby could produce bridging vein strain close to the tolerance for failure and hence should be considered a possible cause of subdural haematoma.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis analyses two films by Clint Eastwood Million Dollar Baby and American Sniper. Its focus is aimed at the formal storytelling aspects, structure of the storyline and plot devices in the screenplays. The first film is an example of misusing these plot devices; the theme being euthanasia remains irrelevant from the viewers perspective although it was meant to resonate strongly at first. Analysis of the second film shows us the discrepancy of what the film "wanted" to be and the actual message it implicitly presents to the audience. Instead of being an objective reflection of the real events (in this case the war in Iraq) it is on purpose misleading in presenting of commonly known facts and hence it becomes propaganda. The analysis of the storytelling devices in this thesis can be also applied on different films and cinema in general.

Abstract:
Becoming a mother is a challenging time and for some women the lifestyle adjustment can be very stressful. In combination with the changes in family structure mothers are increasingly seeking professional support and assistance in the care of their infants and children. Child and family health services in NSW offer varying levels of professional support and education, including 24-hour residential care. The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the mothers' perceptions and experiences of residential admission to a Child and Family Health Unit - Karitane. This study is descriptive in nature. Sixteen English speaking mothers admitted to Karitane in 1998 took part in the study. Focus groups were the main source of data for the study. The focus groups were undirected, conversations recorded and written notes taken. Additional data were collected by a questionnaire to determine the demographic characteristics of the mothers. The mothers' indicators of depression were scored using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Each mother completed the EPDS during the admission period and at the time of the focus and respective comparison was made. Data analysis revealed that the mothers' EDPS scores had decreased significantly at the time of the focus group meeting. The key concepts that emerged in the mothers' descriptions of their experiences were the importance of the development of the professional relationship, equity and access to parenting services, particularly for the partner, and the need for services to promote and provide realistic parenting education with an early intervention focus. The implications of the findings lend support to health care professionals in lobbying government for the necessary funds, in providing increased access to quality parenting services.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT It is not uncommon for new mothers to experience depression. However, depression after the arrival of a child is not limited to biological mothers. The term Post-Adoption Depression Syndrome (PADS) was created to capture the unique type of depression that may occur after adopting a child. The nature and prevalence of depression after adoption is still largely unknown since there is little published research exploring the experiences of mothers in the first year after adopting a child. The characteristics of this disorder are reportedly comparable to postpartum depression in a biological mother. A review of postpartum literature reveals risk factors unrelated to biology. The experiences of adoptive mothers were explored focusing on the psychosocial and psychological risk factors of postpartum depression and challenges specific to adoptive parenting were also considered. Quantitative data were collected through an on-line survey. Findings revealed that 25% of adoptive mothers experienced depressive symptoms after adoption. Lack of support and increased fatigue were the most significant predictors of post-adoption depression. Other factors related to increased depression were found, such as infant temperament and marital status. Additionally, in-depth interviews with adoptive mothers were conducted that illustrate the experiences and challenges specific to adoptive parenting that may contribute to post-adoption depression. Implications for social work practice, adoption agencies and adoption professionals are discussed. Improved assessment strategies are suggested.

Shah, Bunsi. "Fathers' experiences of having a premature baby." Thesis, University of East London, 2007. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3813/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explored the fathers' experiences of having a premature baby. This included their experiences both during the baby's admission to neonatal care and following discharge from the hospital. The aims were to elicit their subjective accounts in order to gain further insight into the phenomena and improve clinical practice. This research employed a qualitative methodology and seven participants took part in the research. Participants were interviewed using a semi-structured interview design and the interviews were tape recorded. An interpretative phenomenological approach was used to analyse the data. The analysis revealed three superordinate themes: Uncertainty and coping, Fatherhood and Changes. A number of subordinate themes are also identified. An important feature of the experiences described by fathers was the uncertainty and powerlessness they experienced over a prolonged period of time as a consequence of the critical condition of their baby. In addition, the fathers were required to fulfil a number of competing roles and expectations. A key strategy described by all was to simply "get on with it". However, all fathers described the distress and sense of loss they experienced as a consequence of being separated from their baby. Yet an important finding was that in the context of loss the fathers reported that the trauma of early birth and the difficulties experienced by their baby appeared to be a catalyst for greater involvement.

This work proposes to develop a reflection about the process of intersubjectivity that begins during the initial relationship between a mother and her baby. Our approach seeks to study the interaction between the Self and the Other at a moment in which the Other finds itself in a conflicting position, in which at the same time it mirrors and is similar while still remains the Other. Using as a principal base the psychoanalytical theory of Winnicott, we approach the process of subjectivation highlighting its intersubjective dimension mutually created by the mother-child pair. In this manner, the psychological development of the baby as well as the becoming a mother of a specific baby are considered processes built through a non-verbal dialogue which is established between the mother and the newborn in the paradoxical experience of being one and being separate.

Many extensions of the standard model predict heavy metastable particles which may be modeled as solitons (skyrmions of the Higgs field), relating their particle number to a winding number. Previous work has shown that the electroweak interactions admit processes in which these solitons decay, violating standard model baryon number. We motivate the hypothesis that baryon-number-violating decay is a generic outcome of collisions between these heavy particles. We do so by exploring a 2+ 1 dimensional theory which also possesses metastable skyrmions. We use relaxation techniques to determine the size, shape and energy of static solitons in their ground state. These solitons could decay by quantum mechanical tunneling. Classically, they are metastable: only a finite excitation energy is required to induce their decay. We attempt to induce soliton decay in a classical simulation by colliding pairs of solitons. We analyze the collision of solitons with varying inherent stabilities and varying incident velocities and orientations. Our results suggest that winding-number violating decay is a generic outcome of collisions. All that is required is sufficient (not necessarily very large) incident velocity; no fine-tuning of initial conditions is required.

Abstract:
This essay was born of a desire to understand the relationship between poetry and politics in a meaningful and current way. The twentieth century has seen atrocities that have taken place on an unprecedented scale: times of historical and social extremity, states of exile, censorship, military occupation, political persecution, torture, warfare, assassination, apartheid and, more recently, forms of violent terrorism. This essay will consider the function of poetry in a world overcome and consumed by violence. The essay will begin with a consideration of the political function of the ideas expressed in Percy Bysshe Shelley's A Defence of Poetry (hereinafter A Defence). Shelley's notion of the promise of art and what it de facto delivers, and his ideas on the significance of poems in the context of politics will be examined. The essay will then consider the views of the Russian Formalists on how to establish the "literariness" of a text and the ability of a text to "defamiliarise", as well as the devices that can be used by a poet to achieve literariness and defamiliarisation. It will touch on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and his concepts of folk humour and grotesque realism in a text. Carolyn Forché's idea of poetry as a witness of a lived experience, as enunciated in her text Against Forgetting: Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness, will be discussed. Thereafter, the essay will consider Viljoen and Van der Merwe's notions of liminality in literature, as expounded in their text Beyond the Threshold, and their explanation of how language can act as a transformative vehicle. In order to illustrate these concepts practically, the essay will analyse two South African poetry collections, namely: Nathan Trantraal's Chokers en Survivors and Oswald Mtshali's Sounds of a Cowhide Drum. The analyses will reveal what distinguishes mere resistance poetry and political diatribe from poetry that is lasting and effective.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate Baby Boomers? knowledge of Alzheimer?s disease (AD) and how a boomer?s age, race/ethnicity, sex, and contact with the disease were associated with knowledge levels. Knowledge was tested using the Alzheimer?s Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS). Results included 86 participants and indicated that there was a direct relationship between the age of Baby Boomers and their overall knowledge of AD in that the older the individual the more knowledgeable they were about AD. Furthermore, the following results were obtained about knowledge of AD based on the subscales of the ADKS: the older an individual, the more knowledge they had about symptoms, females were less knowledgeable about the risk factors than males in the sample, Hispanics were less knowledgeable about assessment and diagnosis of AD than other ethnicities, the longer an individual had contact with someone with AD, the more knowledgeable they were on the course of the disease process.
