Full textIndividuals spend a majority of their lives in the organizational settings and the communication that occurs is detrimental to maintaining balance, while allotting for specific goals to be met. This goal of this thesis was to catalog supervisor misbehaviors with regard to frequency and valence and validate an adapted supervisor misbehavior measure. Additionally, misbehaviors have a relationship with power (prosocial/antisocial), organizational dissent, organizational orientations, supervisor credibility, and subordinate satisfaction. Participants (N = 258) responded to a questionnaire assessing their perceptions on misbehaviors of their current or most recent supervisor. Statistical analyses substantiated the adaptation of misbehaviors from the instructional to the organizational context. Supervisor misbehaviors had significant relationships with power (antisocial and prosocial), dissent (latent), organizational orientations (ambivalent), supervisor credibility (competence, goodwill, and trustworthiness), and subordinate satisfaction. Results are consistent with those found by Kearney et al., (1991) the seminal research on teacher misbehaviors. Despite compelling results, additional research is necessary to ascertain an exhausted supervisor misbehaviors typology and validate a corresponding measure.

Full textThe ordinance of 1669, inspired by colbert, was the starting point of a new style as regards the management of the forestry which was to be applied within the whole kingdom. This long act brought to an end the period initiated in 1661 which was devoted to the complete reorganization of the administration of the woods and forests belonging to the king. In lover poitou the king became quite late the owner of some forests (1694). This new acquired position led him to establish there a maitrise particuliere, i. E. A local command of the forestry administration. Located at fontenay-le-comte it remained in function without any break until 1790. Within this local administration the officiers were given three main duties: the preservation of the entire wooded country owned by the king and the ecclesiastical communities; the eviction of all trespassers who were claiming common of estovers, either actual or alleged; the restoration of planting in order to aim sylviculture towards the production of timbers. . Foresters progressively became well disciplined commissioners who exactly threw back the administrative and bureaucratic monarchy of the 18th century. They were rather specialists in preserving wooded lands than men being able to satisfy a claim for timbers. Such a claim indeed made it necessary to rely on complex methods of planting which did not come into use before the 19th century. Where a new management style was made up and applied to the woods and forests belonging to the public domain and some other communities, either lay or ecclesiastical

Full textThis thesis studies the international commerce of wood in the 16th and 17th centuries, one of the most important raw materials. Having chosen for example konigsberg and amsterdam. I examined the quantitative informations about the mouvements of wood between the eastern and western europe, and observed some concrete cases of great merchants. We can see that this commerce became gradually dominated by the dutch merchants who developped large and sophiscated commercial systems at this time. This study is enlarged in two directions: the demand of the west - building of ships for example - and the provision of the east. We can observe here that the international commerce was carried on the base of the economic difference and, at the same time. Enforced the differentiation between the two parts of europe: the dutch republic and the other western countries which were in the course of a considerable expansion, and the baltic regions which saw the corvee system continue and were under the strong influence of the foreign merchants

Full textThe processes responsible for the production of CO2 and CH 4 in pools remain unexplored. In particular, the contribution of pools to the peatland C balance over the timeframe of the development of a pool complex is not explained and pools are not incorporated into current peatland models. A field study was carried out to examine the exchange of CO2 and CH4 from pools to atmosphere and to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics in CO2, CH4 and DOC storage in pools of different size and spatial location. This was undertaken to improve the understanding of the processes responsible for the generation of CO 2 and CH4 over the timescale of pool development. The empirical study was carried out during spring, summer and fall over two years in an ombrotrophic, raised bog, Quebec, Canada. A modelling component was carried out to examine the contribution of pools to the long-term peatland C balance.
Measurements of dissolved concentrations and emissions of CO2 and CH4 from pool surfaces to atmosphere were different among pools of different sizes and spatial location. Shallow pools had consistently higher emissions of both CO2 and CH4 and higher water column dissolved CO2 and DOC concentrations. Deeper pools had greater concentrations of sediment CH4. Dissolved organic carbon in pools was allochthonous, with a greater concentrations and proportion from higher plant materials in shallow pools, likely contributing to the observed water column CO2 concentrations and greater CO2 emissions.
All pools were supersaturated with dissolved CO2 and CH 4 at the time of sampling, with shallow pools up to eight times atmospheric equilibrium concentrations for CO2 and concentrations were up to one hundred times greater than CH4, comparable to findings in other global freshwater systems. Results suggest that greater decomposition is occurring in shallow pools due to warmer water and basal sediment temperatures and increased light penetration and dissolved oxygen (00) and that greater CH4 production and oxidation accounts for some of the differences reaching a limit at 0.7 m deep. Even though this range of pools are not as deep as pools found on other northern peatlands, the results provide evidence for the potential processes responsible for the generation of CO2 and CH4 emissions to atmosphere and demonstrate that pools have a significant role in the short and long-term peatland C balance. Modelling the hypothesised processes responsible for the generation of CO2 and CH4 shows that if sediment decomposition is the major source of these gases then the dynamical link between pool sediments, C gas production and pool growth has been demonstrated. Ultimately their role as source or sink is largely determined by their size (depth), the proportional cover on the landscape and their rates of C storage in sediments versus rates of C uptake and exchange.

Full textThe acoustic wave propagation in the primordial plasma left its imprint in the two-point correlation function of the matter density field. This baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak builds up a standard ladder allowing us to infer some parameters of the different cosmological models. In this thesis manuscript we present an update of the BAO measurement at a redshift z=2.40, from the cross-correlation function between two tracers of the primordial matter density fluctuations: quasars of SDSS-III (BOSS) and their Lyman-α-forest absorption fluctuations. These fluctuations trace the neutral hydrogen distribution in the intergalactic medium (IGM).This study gives the first developpment of the full physical fit of the cross-correlation. Among other effects, it takes into account quasar physics and the distribution of IGM elements heavier than hydrogen. We also present the first simulations of our analysis. They allow us to validate the overall data analysis leading to the BAO measurement. This study measures the Hubble distance and the angular diameter distance at the 2%$ and 3%$ precision level respectivelly (1 σ interval). We combine our results with other BAO measurements at lower redshifts and find the dark matter density and dark energy density in the framework of two different cosmological models: ΛCDM et oΛCDM

Full textFacing the contemporary changes of the rural worlds, the comprehension of the ability of the rural societies to reproduce and organize their territories is a crucial stake. This PhD in Ethnology is integrated into the pluri-disciplinary researches of a landscape ecology laboratory. The aims of the study are to understand the dynamics between societies and territories in rural societies of the Bas-Comminges, in Haute-Garonne (France). Those societies have the capacities to assimilate changes and are marked by the presence of a specific social system, known as “the house-centered system”, which characteristic is to involve the stability of the real estate. The ethnographic study of the inheritance, the limits and the composition of the real estate since the beginning of the 19th century and the integration of the data collected in a Geographical Information System will reveal the bond between a social organization and its territory. The results are articulated in three points. (1) The real estates are stable during the last 2 centuries. The studied society presents a strong social hierarchy. The social status is based on the land richness and its maintenance from generation to generation. (2) It is noted that it is necessary for the Bas-Commingeois to hold but also to cultivate the land to remain its statute. The objective of the owners is to respect a principle of autonomy of the properties and a diversity of the practices and cover of the land. (3) The maintenance of the status within the hierarchy also passes by an involvement of the Bas-Commingeois within the village’s institutions. The respect of these principles induces the permanence of the territory and an adaptation of the system to the changes of the rural world. This study answers questions about the dynamics of agricultural and forest spaces and contributes to a better understanding of the capacities of the rural worlds to survive

Full textDesigning robots with bio-sourced materials (BSM) for eco-design purpose has almost never been explored in the past. This thesis investigates the potential of using bio-sourced materials, which have almost no environmental impact, instead of metals for robot design. Wood is one of the best candidates because of its interesting mechanical properties. However, wood performance / dimensions vary with the atmospheric conditions / external solicitations. Thus, this thesis is in the framework of the RobEcolo project whose challenging to design a stiff and accurate wooden industrial parallel robot. To ensure optimal performance of the wooden robot (specifically the accuracy) and in order to minimize the uncertainty of the BSM models and the errors due to the dimensional variations due to atmospheric conditions, exteroceptive sensors can be used to control the robot. In order to satisfy these requirements, we propose in this manuscript a modification of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory which is used to develop accurate and fast wood elastic models able to predict the realistic robot static and dynamic behaviors. Finally, theoretical developments proposed in this thesis allowed the prototyping of an industrial wooden five-bar mechanism and the robot performance in term of safeness and accuracy has been validated experimentally on the prototype

Full textWooden structures are a good solution for building multi-story buildings. Wood is known for its architectural appearance, low footprint and mechanical strength. The addition of a thin layer of concrete connected using shear connectors to a piece of glued-laminated timber (GLULAM) or a Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) considerably increases the rigidity of the floor. It is therefore possible to build longer span in building while respecting the Serviceability Limit States (SLS) deflection criteria as well as the Ultimate Limit States (ULS) bearing capacity. These innovative solutions are also less sensitive to vibrations since they are more rigid. The comfort of users is improved. This thesis focuses on the development of a shallow notch type connection suitable for composite slabs. This connection is designed to obtain a rigid initial behavior, followed by a big ductility. This is possible by using the compressive ductile nature of the timber. Several configurations are tested in CLT and GLULAM. The depth of the cut varies from 20 mm to 35 mm. The influence of the presence of an acoustic insulation between the timber and the concrete is also quantified. The first shear tests on the different configurations showed very good results. Three 8 m single span CLT-HPC slabs were cast. The CLT-HPC slabs were designed with a multi-criteria approach to meet the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) standards and to maximize certain factors considered important by the building industry such as floor thickness, floor weight, the cost, etc.

Full textThis work consists in two parts. The first one is a study of cosmic homogeneity, and the second one a measurement of the BAO scale, which provides a standard ruler that allows for a direct measurement of the expansion rate of the universe. These two analyses rely on the study of quasar clustering in the BOSS and eBOSS quasar samples, which cover the redshift range 0.9 < z < 2.8. On large scales, the measurement of statistical observables is very sensitive to systematic effects, so we deeply studied these effects. We found evidences that the target selections of BOSS and eBOSS quasars are not perfectly homogeneous, and we have corrected this effect. The measurement of the quasar correlation function provides the quasar bias in the redshift range 0.9 < z < 2.8. We obtain the most precise measurement of the quasar bias at high redshift, b = 3.85 ± 0.11, in the range 2.2 < z < 2.8 for the BOSS survey, and b = 2.44 ± 0.04 in the range 0.9 < z < 2.2 for the eBOSS survey. The Cosmological Principle states that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on large scales. It is one of the basic assumptions of modern cosmology. By studying quasar clustering on large scales, we have proved ''spatial isotropy'', i.e. the fact that the universe is isotropic in each redshift bins. This has been done in the range 0.9 < z < 2.8 without any assumption or fiducial cosmology. If we combine spatial isotropy with the Copernican Principle, which states that we do not occupy a peculiar place in the universe, it is proved that the universe is homogeneous on large scales. We provide a measurement of the fractal correlation dimension of the universe, D₂(r), which is 3 for an homogeneous distribution, and we used a new estimator inspired from the Landy-Szalay estimator for the correlation function. If we correct our measurement for quasar bias, we obtain (3 - D₂(r)) = (6.0 ± 2.1) x 10⁻⁵ between 250 h⁻¹ Mpc and 1200 h⁻¹ Mpc for eBOSS, in the range 0.9 < z < 2.2. For BOSS, we obtain (3 - D₂(r)) = (3.9 ± 2.1) x 10⁻⁵, in the range 2.2 < z < 2.8. Moreover, we have shown that the Lambda-CDM model provide a very nice description of the transition from structures to homogeneity. We have also measured the position of the BAO peak in the BOSS and eBOSS quasar correlation functions, which yield a 2,5 sigma detection in both surveys. If we measure the α parameter, which corresponds to the ratio of the measured position of the peak to the predicted position in a fiducial cosmology (here Planck 2013), we measure α = 1.074 for BOSS, and α = 1.009 for eBOSS. These measurements, combined only with the local measurement of H₀, allows for constraints in parameter space for models beyond Lambda-CDM

This study discusses the subject of efficiency of financial markets, testing the efficiency in its semi-strong form. Then, we analyzed how effective is the disclosure of relevant facts reported by companies that belong to index PSI20. Therefore, we attempted to determine whether disclosure contains information useful to the market, find out how that is incorporated into the share price and test whether there is empirical evidence to conclude the possibility of someone have obtained abnormal returns around the day of relevant fact's disclosure chosen for the investigation. To test we used the classic methodology of event studies. Through that, we tested the hypothesis of semi-strong efficiency of main index Portuguese stock market. At the first chapter, we began to contextualize this work in time, presenting a look at the economic situation in the period chosen for analysis (from 1st January 2008 to 31th December 2010) and the period that preceded it. After framing world's economic situation and made the alerts for a stricter monitoring the markets, it presents the legal context of the Portuguese market, spearheaded by CMVM, where we provide data about the duty of disclosure relevant facts by listed companies at PSI20. Next, we performed a literature review about the market informational efficiency's theory, trying to bridge the gap between several historical scholars in the previous century who studied the subject of market efficiency, more specifically in the event studies, and those who have studied and developed the concept already at the 21th century. At chapter 4, we divide it into two issues that may skew the analysis of events: the technical analysis, used by traders at financial markets, and behavioral finance. Then, we did a brief summary of Portuguese market and the formation of PSI20. At chapter 6, we described the methodology adopted for the study and data collection. Thus, we calculated the abnormal return (AR) which is the subtraction between the actual return and expected return. About expected return, the parameters we calculated by the method of least squares (OLS). Then, we calculated the average abnormal return (AAR) and cumulative average abnormal return (CAAR). It was through AAR and CAAR that we formulated the hypothesis of normality of returns in order to conclude if there was empirical evidence that indicates the existence of abnormal returns. After that description is then presented the empirical results of the tests described in the previous chapter. We also presented results of tests according to the categorization of announcement, "Good news" and "Bad news", based on the day 0's rate of return. The final chapter reveals the conclusions and the results provided. The findings show us that the Portuguese market is not efficient in its semi-strong form.

Full textThe history of legionary sites in the Roman Empire is undergoing a significant revival today thanks to numerous research projects being conducted in Europe. Within this context, the present study explores the Roman military presence in Strasbourg - Argentorate, and more particularly the 8th Legion’s camp, from an archaeological and historical viewpoint. This study is based on the analysis of literary and epigraphic sources, on the interpretation of published documentation and on the results of two recent rescue excavations (“Grenier d’Abondance” and “4 rue Brûlée”). It shows that the Roman occupation, beginning around 15 AD, coincides with the arrival of the legio II Augusta whose presence is attested by several funerary monuments. Between 43 AD and the settlement of the legio VIII Augusta around 90 AD, Strasbourg was not a legionary garrison, but mostly one of auxiliary troops. In its early form, the camp of the 8th Legion was protected by an earth rampart with layers of timber before being superimposed with the first stone defensive circuit around the mid-2nd century AD; that wall was reinforced around 300 AD. The barracks in the latus praetorii dextrum remained occupied until the end of the first quarter of 4th century AD. With the settlement of civilians from the second third of 4th century AD, the legionary camp gradually turned into an urban fortified site with a limited military presence, at least until the beginning of 5th century AD. This study provides detailed insight into aspects of the 8th Legion’s camp and reviews the chronology of the Roman military presence of this major Rhineland site

“A boy should behave like a boy!” What exactly makes one “look like a boy?” Being masculine, overbearing, and adventurous? Is taking care of children a responsibility of men or women? There are widely varying answers to these issues concerning gender roles. The Japanese manga “Baby and Me” is a heart-warming comic work. The author uses Takuya Enoki’s stories about experiencing growth through taking the role of his mother who dies in a sudden to express the touching brotherly love. This study selected “Baby and Me” as the text for research. Through an exploration of the family, friendship, courtship, and social relationship of multiple boys in the text, it aimed to investigate how boy images are presented in this text and the implications of these boy images. Besides, it also discussed how a manga text could provide educational meanings to the society from the perspective of literature. This study used the views of psychology and sociology to analyze the boy images in “Baby and Me”. Results showed that boy images would vary across different contexts and for different relationships. From these boy images, it could be inferred that the author believed that men could also undertake the responsibilities of nurturing children; involvement in caring children and helping with housework could facilitate the growth of female consciousness in boys; and readers of this manga could reflect on the complication, contradictions, and helplessness of the adult world from the perspective of children. In this manga text, serious issues are discussed in humorous ways, suggesting that literature can really provide different views to help the society examine the existing concepts about gender roles. Therefore, manga texts also have the function of educating the society.

During the years of 2008 to 2011, I applied my personal experiences and daily life as the basis of my inspiration. My concept involves the thinking process of individualism versus system, beauty and the grotesque, obedient and the mischievous, righteous and the malicious plus the reflection of positive and negative aspects of my everyday life, including the dream of my futural goals. I hope to develop my own artistic values using the very same logic and research within this thesis. Being an outgoing and spontaneous person, I dislike monotonous studying; this resulted in extra discipline from my teachers during my childhood, which created my personal resentment against authority, and ultimately drove me to challenge it. These personal experiences I faced during my life which has influenced me to become critical of orthodox values and my work reflects my views against such traditionalism. In my creative process, I apply satire to critique the values of beauty and the grotesque, obedient and the mischievous, righteous and the malicious, as well as values of our society. I hope using the process of writing, in which I can compile an understanding and even a personal connection towards my creative thought process. The following article is broken down into the following. Introduction: Research and development. Chapter one:Literature review. Chapter two:Applied practice via mixed media on my connections with subcultures. Chapter three:Thought process on my creations, dissecting my creative thinking and emotions while in creative practice. Conclusion:Ideas and concerns on my present and future art practice.

Full textThis thesis intends to identify the effects of climate change as it relates to the traditional activities of the Eastern James Bay Cree. Numerous studies have analysed climate change, however relatively few have studied its socioeconomic and socio-cultural effects on the subarctic populations of Quebec as does this one. Exploring the integration mechanisms between scientific knowledge and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), this combination of knowledge being presented by many researchers as the next step in TEK research, this thesis utilizes the various perceptions that the hunters of the Cree Trappers Association have of the impacts of climate change. Emphasis was placed on their traditional activities in connection with the Canada goose and the woodland caribou, two culturally important species The study uses an approach combining the theoretical aspects of ethnoecology with the practical aspects of case studies. Various methods of data collection were used: literary and cartography reviews, questionnaires and long and short interviews. The research demonstrates a variation in Cree observations of climate change and in their perceptions of the effects of these changes based on the location of the community in the James Bay region. Certain effects are perceived in all communities, for instance participants from all communities worried about the dangers associated with an increased fragility of the ice formed on lakes and rivers. However, it was primarily members of the coastal communities who worried over the Canada geese moving further inland. Members of the coastal communities were also the only ones to not notice a reduction in the numbers of woodland caribou on their traplines. Climate change seems to have an impact on the Cree’s traditional way of life associated with the Canada goose and woodland caribou and to affect the transmission of their traditional knowledge to the newer generations as it pertains to the woodland caribou. Also highlighted is the fact that a combination of TEK and scientific data allows for a broader picture of climate and species evolution (e.g.: climate variations between the coast and the interior of the territory, presence of white-tailed deers and coyotes on the territory) and suggests new research questions and hypothesis (e.g.: causes for a change in the ice structure, evolution in the range and distribution of Canada geese subspecies, impact of bloodsucking insects on caribou health). It also allows for a better identification and understanding of the stakes and adaptation processes currently going on in Eastern James Bay communities (e.g.: decrease in caribou consumption, maintenance of geese consumption, increased dangers during travel due to an increase in ice fragility or in unusual climatic events). The combined use of TEK and scientific knowledge allows for a better understanding of the effects of climate change and the complex sociocultural and environmental dynamics at play in the Eastern James Bay.
Cordeiro, Pedro Alexandre de Oliveira. "Job quality of the PhD graduates in Portugal." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/19223.
Herczeg-Konecny, Jessica. ""We will be prepared" : scouting and civil defense in the early Cold War, 1949-1963." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/4033.
Full textDuring the early Cold War, 1949 through 1963, the federal government, through such agencies as the Federal Civil Defense Administration (FCDA) (1950-1957), the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization (OCDM) (1958-1960), and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) (1961-1963), regarded children and young adults as essential to American civil defense. Youth-oriented, voluntary organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA), assisted the federal civil defense programs by promoting civil defense messages and agendas. In this thesis, I will explore how the GSUSA and BSA translated federal civil defense policies for their Scouts. What were the civil defense messages transmitted to Scouts during the early Cold War? How were those messages disseminated? Why? What was the social impact of BSA and GSUSA involvement with civil defense on America’s evolving national ideals?
