Abstract:
Perceived control has been implicated in the adaptation and well-being of older adults and may be especially relevant to elder caregivers. However, few studies have investigated perceived control within the individual's unique personal, social, and environmental context. This study tested a model representing the hypothesis that perceived control, defined as the perception that salient or valued aspects of one's life are manageable, mediates the objective and subjective aspects of caregiving and caregiver adaptation. Sixty elderly caregivers ranging in age from sixty to eighty-four (M = 69.4) were interviewed. Perceived control had a direct relationship with life satisfaction and depression, and an indirect relationship with subjective symptoms of stress. Wishful thinking coping behavior had a negative relationship with all adaptation variables. Findings are discussed in relation to further refinement and development of a theoretical approach to caregiver research and intervention studies in light of the obtained path model.

Abstract:
Understanding the functions of different brain areas has represented a major endeavor of contemporary neurosciences. The purpose of this paper was to pinpoint the connectivity of Brodmann area 20 (BA20) (inferior temporal gyrus, fusiform gyrus) in language tasks. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the language network in which BA20 is involved. The DataBase of Brainmap was used; 11 papers corresponding to 12 experimental conditions with a total of 207 subjects were included in this analysis. Our results demonstrated seven clusters of activation including other temporal lobe areas (BA3, BA21), the insula, and the prefrontal cortex; minor clusters in the cingulate gyrus and the occipital lobe were observed; however, the volumes of all the activation clusters were small. Our results suggest that regardless of BA20 having certain participation in language processes it cannot be considered as a core language processing area (Wernicke’s area); nonetheless, it could be regarded as kind of language processing marginal area, participating in “extended Wernicke’s area” or simply “Wernicke’s system.” It is suggested that “core Wernicke’s area” roughly corresponds to BA21, BA22, BA41, and BA42, while a “language associations area” roughly corresponds to BA20, BA37, BA38, BA39, and BA40 (“extended Wernicke’s area” or “Wernicke’s system”).

Abstract:
In this study, we investigated the molecular evolution and phylodynamics of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) over 10 consecutive seasons (2008–2017) and the genetic variability of the RSV genotypes ON1 and BA in central Taiwan. The ectodomain region of the G gene was sequenced for genotyping. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of the second hypervariable region of the G protein in RSV ON1 and BA were analyzed. A total of 132 RSV-A and 81 RSV-B isolates were obtained. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the NA1, ON1, and BA9 genotypes were responsible for the RSV epidemics in central Taiwan in the study period. For RSV-A, the NA1 genotype predominated during the 2008–2011 seasons. The ON1 genotype was first detected in 2011 and replaced NA1 after 2012. For RSV-B, the BA9 and BA10 genotypes cocirculated from 2008 to 2010, but the BA9 genotype has predominated since 2012. Amino acid sequence alignments revealed the continuous evolution of the G gene in the ectodomain region. The predicted N-glycosylation sites were relatively conserved in the ON1 (site 237 and 318) and BA9 (site 296 and 310) genotype strains. Our results contribute to the understanding and prediction of the temporal evolution of RSV at the local level.

Abstract:
Background: impaired intracortical myelination most pronounced in prefrontal cortex is tightly linked to inadequate information processing in schizophrenia. Previously we reported a significant decrease in the numerical density (Nv) of oligodendrocytes (Ol) and oligodendrocyte clusters (OlC) in layers 3 and 5 of the prefrontal cortex, Brodmann area 10 (BA10) in schizophrenia. To date there are few studies on the possible role of perineuronal oligodendrocyte satellites (Sat-Ol) in human brain pathology.Aim of the study: to estimate the number of Sat-Ol per pyramidal neuron in layer 3 of BA10 in schizophrenia as compared to healthy controls and to evaluate the possible correlations between the number of Sat-Ol and NvOl or NvOlC in schizophrenia and normal controls.Material and methods: we investigated the number of Sat-Ol per pyramidal neuron in sublayers 3a, 3b and 3c of layer 3 of BA10 in schizophrenia (n = 20) as compared to healthy controls (n = 20) in the same section collection previously used for the study of the NvOl and NvOlC.Rеsults and conclusion: we found a significant reduction in the number of Sat-Ol in schizophrenia as compared to the control group (17 and 24% resp., p < 0.01). There were no correlations between the number of Sat-Ol and the NvOl or NvOlC. The comparison of current data to similar findings from our previous studies in BA39 and BA40 of the inferior parietal cortex indicates that specific features of oligodendrocyte alterations and their correlation patterns may be associated with specific activity-driven plasticity of corresponding networks in normal and schizophrenia brains.

Abstract:
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes acute lower respiratory tract infection in infants and young children worldwide. To investigate the RSV burden in Thailand over four consecutive years (January 2012 to December 2015), we screened 3,306 samples obtained from children ≤5 years old with acute respiratory tract infection using semi-nested reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In all, 8.4% (277/3,306) of the specimens tested positive for RSV, most of which appeared in the rainy months of July to November. We then genotyped RSV by sequencing the G glycoprotein gene and performed phylogenetic analysis to determine the RSV antigenic subgroup. The majority (57.4%, 159/277) of the RSV belonged to subgroup A (RSV-A), of which NA1 genotype was the most common in 2012 while ON1 genotype became prevalent the following year. Among samples tested positive for RSV-B subgroup B (RSV-B) (42.6%, 118/277), most were genotype BA9 (92.6%, 87/94) with some BA10 and BA-C. Predicted amino acid sequence from the partial G region showed highly conserved N-linked glycosylation site at residue N237 among all RSV-A ON1 strains (68/68), and at residues N296 (86/87) and N310 (87/87) among RSV-B BA9 strains. Positive selection of key residues combined with notable sequence variations on the G gene contributed to the continued circulation of this rapidly evolving virus.

Abstract:
Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia (PDD) together, represent the second most common cause of dementia, after Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The synaptic dysfunctions underlying the cognitive decline and psychiatric symptoms observed throughout the development of PDD and DLB are still under investigation. In this study we examined the expression level of Dynamin1 and phospho-CaMKII, key proteins of endocytosis and synaptic plasticity respectively, as potential markers of molecular processes specifically deregulated with DLB and/or PDD. In order to measure the levels of these proteins, we isolated grey matter from post-mortem prefrontal cortex area (BA9), anterior cingulated gyrus (BA24) and parietal cortex (BA40) from DLB and PDD patients in comparison to age-matched controls and a group of AD cases. Clinical and pathological data available included the MMSE score, neuropsychiatric history, and semi-quantitative scores for AD pathology (plaques - tangles) and for α-synuclein (Lewy bodies).Changes in the expression of the synaptic markers, and correlates with neuropathological features and cognitive decline were predominantly found in the prefrontal cortex. On one hand, levels of Dynamin1 were significantly reduced, and correlated with a higher rate of cognitive decline observed in cases from three dementia groups. On the other hand, the fraction of phospho-CaMKII was decreased, and correlated with a high score of plaques and tangles in BA9. Interestingly, the correlation between the rate of cognitive decline and the level of Dynamin1 remained when the analysis was restricted to the PDD and DLB cases, highlighting an association of Dynamin1 with cognitive decline in people with Lewy Body dementia.

Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the mechanisms of central brain action in patients with neurogenic underactive bladder (UAB) treated with intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES).Methods: We prospectively recruited patients with neurogenic UAB who chose to receive IVES treatment and healthy subjects (HS). At baseline, the following data were obtained: a 72-hour voiding diary; measurements of postvoid residual urine (PVR), voiding efficiency (VE) and first sensation of bladder filling (FS); American Urological Association Symptom Index Quality of Life (AUA-SI-QOL) scores, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy scans of the prefrontal cortex in the voiding stage. All UAB patients were re-evaluated for these indices after completing 4 weeks of IVES. A >50% improvement in PVR was defined as successful IVES treatment. Prefrontal activity was analyzed using the NIRS_KIT software, corrected with the false discovery rate (P<0.05). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 22.0, and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Eighteen UAB patients and 16 HS were included. IVES treatment was successful in 11 UAB patients and failed in 7. The PVR, VE, 24-hour clean intermittent catheterization, FS volume, and AUA-SI-QOL scores of the UAB group significantly improved after successful IVES treatment. BA9 (right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex [DLPFC]) and BA10 (right frontal pole) were significantly activated after successful IVES, and no significant difference was found between the successful group and HS group after IVES. Before IVES, BA10 (right frontal pole) was significantly deactivated in the failed group compared with the successful group. Conclusions: The possible central mechanism of IVES treatment for neurogenic UAB is that IVES reactivates the right DLPFC and right frontal pole.

Abstract:
The robust process in memorising the Quran is expected to cause neuroplasticity changes in the brain. To date, the analysis of neuroplasticity is limited in binary images because greyscale analysis requires the usage of more robust processing techniques. This research work aims to explore and characterise the complexity of textual memorisation brain structures using fractal analysis between huffaz and non-huffaz applying global box-counting, global Fourier fractal dimension (FFD), and volume of interest (VOI)-based analysis. The study recruited 47 participants from IIUM Kuantan Campus. The huffaz group had their 18 months of systematic memorisation training. The brain images were acquired by using MRI. Global box-counting and FFD analysis were conducted on the brain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) found no significant statistical difference between brains of huffaz and non-huffaz. VOI-based analysis found nine significant areas: two for box-counting analysis (angular gyrus and medial temporal gyrus), six for FFD analysis (BA20, BA30, anterior cingulate, fusiform gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, and frontal lobe), and only a single area (BA33) showed significant volume differences between huffaz and non-huffaz. The results have highlighted the sensitivity of VOI-based analysis because of its local nature, as compared to the global analysis by box-counting and FFD.

Abstract:
Undoubtedly, drought is a negative consequence of climate change. Farmers have to deal with this issue and may be forced to irrigate their crops with less water than required, however reduction in productivity is anticipated. Thus, two–year field trials were conducted to assess the impact of irrigation regimes (60, 80 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration, denoted ET60, ET80, and ET100, respectively) and benzyladenine rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg L−1, symbolized as BA0, BA50, BA100, BA150, BA200, respectively) on soybean. Findings clarified that the maximum increases in plant height and net assimilation rate were obtained with the interactions of ET100 or ET80 x BA200 or BA150 in both seasons. ET80 x BA200 (in both seasons) and ET100 x BA150 (in the first season) were as similar as ET100 x BA200 for enhancing pods number plant−1. Irrigation water use efficiency progressively increased with decreasing irrigation water amount and increasing benzyladenine rate. In conclusion, the reduction in seed yield due to lowering water supply up to 80% of crop evapotranspiration (with saving 20% of irrigation water) could be compensated using benzyladenine, 150 mg L−1, thus it should be involved in soybean irrigation programs.

Abstract:
Hemiparesis is the most common deficit after cerebral stroke. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is a new neurorehabilitation method that emphasizes task-relevant repetitive training for the stroke hand. Twelve chronic stroke patients were studied with single-photon emission computerized tomography at rest before and after the two-week CIMT period. Increased perfusion was found in motor control related areas. The specific areas with an increase in perfusion in the affected hemisphere were in the precentral gyrus, premotor cortex (Brodmann's area 6 (BA6)), frontal cortex, and superior frontal gyrus (BA10). In the nonaffected hemisphere, perfusion was increased in the superior frontal gyrus (BA6) and cingulate gyrus (BA31). In the cerebellum increased perfusion was seen bilaterally. The brain areas with increased perfusion receive and integrate the information from different sensory systems and plan the movement execution. Regional cerebral perfusion decreased in the lingual gyrus (BA18) in the affected hemisphere. In the nonaffected frontal cortex, two areas with decreased perfusion were found in the middle frontal gyrus (BA8/10). Also, the fusiform gyrus (BA20) and inferior temporal gyrus (BA37) in the non-affected hemisphere showed decreased perfusion. Intensive movement therapy appears to change local cerebral perfusion in areas known to participate in movement planning and execution. These changes might be a sign of active reorganization processes after CIMT in the chronic state of stroke.

Abstract:
Human respiratory syncytial virus is the main cause of respiratory infections in infants. Several HRSV genotypes have been described. Goals. To describe the main genotypes that caused infections in São Paulo (2013–2015) and to analyze their clinical/epidemiological features. Methods. 94 infants (0–6 months) with bronchiolitis were studied. Clinical/epidemiological information was collected; a search for 16 viruses in nasopharyngeal secretion (PCR-real-time and conventional, sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses) was performed. Results. The mean age was 2.4 m; 48% were male. The mean length of hospital stay was 4.4 d (14% in the Intensive Care Unit). The positive rate of respiratory virus was 98.9%; 73 cases (77.6%) were HRSV (76,7% HRSVA). HRSVA formed three clusters: ON1 (n=34), NA1 (n=1), and NA2 (n=4). All HRSVB were found to cluster in the BA genotype (BA9-n=10; BA10-n=3). Clinical analyses showed no significant differences between the genotype AON1 and other genotypes. Conclusion. This study showed a high rate of HRSV detection in bronchiolitis. HRSVA ON1, which has recently been described in other countries and has not been identified in previous studies in the southeast region of Brazil, was predominant. The clinical characteristics of the infants that were infected with AON1 were similar to infants with infections by other genotypes.

Abstract:
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder. Because motor signs are the defining feature of GTS, addressing the neurophysiology of motor processes is central to understanding GTS. The integration of voluntary motor processes is subject to so-called “binding problems”, i.e., how different aspects of an action are integrated. This was conceptualized in the theory of event coding, in which ‘action files’ accomplish the integration of motor features. We examined the functional neuroanatomical architecture of EEG theta band activity related to action file processing in GTS patients and healthy controls. Whereas, in keeping with previous data, behavioral performance during action file processing did not differ between GTS and controls, underlying patterns of neural activity were profoundly different. Superior parietal regions (BA7) were predominantly engaged in healthy controls, but superior frontal regions (BA9, BA10) in GTS indicated that the processing of different motor feature codes was central for action file processing in healthy controls, whereas episodic processing was more relevant in GTS. The data suggests a cascade of cognitive branching in fronto-polar areas followed by episodic processing in superior frontal regions in GTS. Patients with GTS accomplish the integration of motor plans via qualitatively different neurophysiological processes.

An improved method of sample preparation was used in a microplate assay to evaluate the bactericidal activity levels of 96 essential oils and 23 oil compounds against Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enterica obtained from food and clinical sources. Bactericidal activity (BA50) was defined as the percentage of the sample in the assay mixture that resulted in a 50% decrease in CFU relative to a buffer control. Twenty-seven oils and 12 compounds were active against all four species of bacteria. The oils that were most active against C. jejuni (with BA50 values ranging from 0.003 to 0.009) were marigold, ginger root, jasmine, patchouli, gardenia, cedarwood, carrot seed, celery seed, mugwort, spikenard, and orange bitter oils; those that were most active against E. coli (with BA50 values ranging from 0.046 to 0.14) were oregano, thyme, cinnamon, palmarosa, bay leaf, clove bud, lemon grass, and allspice oils; those that were most active against L. monocytogenes (with BA50 values ranging from 0.057 to 0.092) were gardenia, cedarwood, bay leaf, clove bud, oregano, cinnamon, allspice, thyme, and patchouli oils; and those that were most active against S. enterica (with BA50 values ranging from 0.045 to 0.14) were thyme, oregano, cinnamon, clove bud, allspice, bay leaf, palmarosa, and marjoram oils. The oil compounds that were most active against C. jejuni (with BA50 values ranging from 0.003 to 0.034) were cinnamaldehyde, estragole, carvacrol, benzaldehyde, citral, thymol, eugenol, perillaldehyde, carvone R, and geranyl acetate; those that were most active against E. coli (with BA50 values ranging from 0.057 to 0.28) were carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, thymol, eugenol, salicylaldehyde, geraniol, isoeugenol, citral, perillaldehyde, and estragole; those that were most active against L. monocytogenes (with BA50 values ranging from 0.019 to 0.43) were cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, thymol, carvacrol, citral, geraniol, perillaldehyde, carvone S, estragole, and salicylaldehyde; and those that were most active against S. enterica (with BA50 values ranging from 0.034 to 0.21) were thymol, cinnamaldehyde, carvacrol, eugenol, salicylaldehyde, geraniol, isoeugenol, terpineol, perillaldehyde, and estragole. Increased activity in the left inferior parietal cortex (BA40) plays a role in the generation of tics in the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). Thus, inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to BA40 was hypothesized to alleviate symptoms in GTS. We investigated the immediate effects of single-session 1 Hz rTMS and sham stimulation delivered to the left BA40 on tics assessed with the Rush video protocol in 29 adults with GTS. There were no significant effects on tic symptoms following rTMS or sham stimulation. Moreover, there was no difference when comparing the effects of both stimulation conditions. Bayesian statistics indicated substantial evidence against an intervention effect. The left BA40 appears not to be a useful target for 1 Hz rTMS to modulate tic symptoms in GTS patients.

Abstract:
Preventing toxicity in aquaculture systems from ammonia and nitrite is important. This study isolated the salt-tolerant Bacillus sp. strain Ba9 from bottom sediment under an Asian Seabass (Lates calcarifer) cage cultivating at Koh Yor, Songkhla, Thailand. Morphological characteristics showed that strain Ba9 was rod-shaped, endospore-forming, and Gram-positive. Strain Ba9 grew well at a salinity of 1.5 to 4.0% NaCl. The catalase test of the isolate was positive, while the oxidase test was negative. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing data and phylogenetic tree analysis, strain Ba9 was identified as B. oceanisediminis with 97% similarity (strain HQB337T). The result showed that the ammonium removal efficiency of Ba9 in a high ammonium medium was 64.24%. The nitrite and nitrate production were 0.10% and 0.08%, respectively. Consequently, sucrose had been the optimal carbon source for Ba9, which showed ammonium removal was 61.05%. Ammonium sulfate is the most suitable for ammonium oxidation, with 50.53% for the nitrogen source. The optimal C/N ratio of strain Ba9 was 8, with 71.15% ammonia removal. For wastewater improvement, strain Ba9 was inoculated into artificial wastewater for 14 days. The result showed that the ammonium removal efficiency of Ba9 was 96.87%. In addition, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal efficiency of Ba9 was 90.86%. From this result, the salt-tolerant B. oceanisediminis Ba9 has a high potential as a microbial product for water quality management in marine aquaculture.

Abstract:
SUMMARYRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause serious respiratory infections, second only to influenza virus. In order to know RSV's genetic changes we examined 4028 respiratory specimens from local hospital outpatients in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea over six consecutive years by real-time one-step RT–PCR; 183 patients were positive for RSV infection. To investigate the specific distribution of RSV genotypes, we performed partial sequencing of the glycoprotein gene. Of the 131 RSV-A specimens sequenced, 61 (43·3%) belonged to the ON1 genotype, 66 (46·8%) were NA1 genotype, 3 (2·1%) were GA5 genotype, and 1 (0·7%) belonged to the GA1 genotype. Of the 31 RSV-B specimens sequenced, 29 were BA9 genotype (87·9%) and 2 were BA10 genotype (6·1%). The most common clinical symptoms were fever, cough, nasal discharge, and phlegm; multiple logistic regression analysis showed that RSV-positive infection on pediatric patients was strongly associated with cough (OR = 2·8, 95% CI 1·6–5·1) and wheezing (OR = 2·8, 95% CI 1·7–4·4). The ON1 genotype was significantly associated with phlegm (OR = 11·8, 95% CI 3·8–46·7), while the NA1 genotype was associated with the pediatric patients’ gender (males, OR = 2·4, 95% CI 1·1–5·4) and presence of chills (OR = 5·1, 95% CI 1·1–27·2). RSV subgroup B was showed association with nasal obstruction (OR = 4·6, 95% CI 1·2–20·0). The majority of respiratory virus coinfections with RSV were human rhinovirus (47·2%). This study contributes to our understanding of the molecular epidemiological characteristics of RSV, which promotes the potential for improving RSV vaccines.

Abstract:
Various countries and organizations call for banning the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) as prophylaxis and for growth promotion in the livestock industry. Hence, seeking a substitute for antibiotics is strongly required by the livestock industry to maintain the productivity level and profits. Probiotics could represent one viable solution because of their beneficial effects on host health and maintaining the intestinal microbiota balance. In the present study, we aimed to isolate bacterial strains with probiotics properties from JinHua pig (a Chinese native pig breed) gastrointestinal tract that have antagonistic activity against to common disease-causing bacteria on farms. The four most potent strains were isolated (PP31, BA11, BA40, BV5) by the agar well diffusion method and further characterized by acid, bile salt, trypsin tolerance, whole genome sequencing (WGS), and suppressing Clostridium perfringens adhesion to IPEC-J2 cells. According to these results, BA40 had the highest number and variety of probiotic secondary metabolic secretion genes and capacity to exclude the attachment of Clostridium perfringens to IPEC-J2 cells as same as PB6. The animal experiment in vivo illustrated that BA40 and PB6 could reduce the phenomenon induced by Clostridium perfringens challenge of body weight loss, colon length decrease, pro-inflammatory cytokine increase, and Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli increase. The present study provides evidence that BA40 could represent a novel probiotic candidate as PB6, which exhibited some probiotic features and mitigated the burden of Clostridium perfringens associated gut disease.

In this research work, unfilled and monofilled polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were investigated. The applied fillers were graphene, alumina (Al2O3), boehmite alumina (BA80) and hydrotalcite (MG70). Graphene and Al2O3 are already known in the literature as potential fillers of PTFE, while BA80 and MG70 are novel fillers in PTFE. Materials were produced by room temperature pressing—free sintering method with a maximum sintering temperature of 370 °C. The mass loss and decomposition analyses were carried out by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in two different ways. The first was a sensitivity analysis to gain a better view into the sintering process at 370 °C maximal temperature. The second was a heating from 50 °C up to 1000 °C for a full-scale decomposition analysis. BA80 is a suitable filler for PTFE, as most of its functional groups still existed after the sintering process. Both PTFE and Al2O3 had high thermal stability. However, when Al2O3 was incorporated in PTFE, a remarkable mass loss was observed during the sintering process, which indicated that the decomposition of PTFE was catalysed by the Al2O3 filler. The observed mass loss of the Al2O3-filled PTFE was increased, as the Al2O3 content or the applied dwelling time at a 370 °C sintering temperature increased.

Abstract:
Despite the current advancements in, and increasing use of renewable types of energy, approximately 40% of the world’s electricity is still produced by coal fired power stations. This trend is significantly higher in some continents, for example approximately 70% in India and up to 90% in South Africa. In this study the fly-bottom ash (FBA) mixture with different component percentages of BA (bottom ash)100, FA (fly ash) 25-BA75, FA50-BA50, FA75-BA25 and FA100 were modified with 2% of poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA), and tested in terms of particle size distribution, specific gravity, pH, surface morphology, mineralogical-compound content, and engineering properties. The physiochemical modified FBA were examined via scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Polymeric-modified FBA for all compositions exhibited high pH values within the range of 10.11–10.70. SEM image exhibited agglomerated and strongly bonded PVA-modified FBA with FA50-BA50 composition because of the effect of polymer that reacted with the fine ashes. The unsubstantial shift in peak position of Si/Al-O stretches showed electrostatic interaction between PVA and FBA based on FTIR analysis. The PVA-modified FBA at composition of FA50-BA50 increased the gradient of stress–strain curves, which significantly improved the strength behavior of PVA-modified FBA sample. It is thus imperative that other sustainable methods of managing coal combustion-by products be expanded .

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Sleepwalking belongs to a family of disorders (Disorders of Arousal - DOA) that are thought to derive from incomplete arousals out of Non Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep. At yet, our knowledge about the specific neural dynamics occurring during clinical episodes is limited and relies on one SPECT case study, four stereo-EEG case reports/series and one single high-density electro-encephalography (hdEEG) case report. We herein describe a single case captured by hdEEG. Report of Case We collected two consecutive sleep recordings (using a 256-channel hdEEG coupled with standard video-polysomnography) of a non-medicated, otherwise healthy, 13-year-old male, with a history of recurrent daily sleepwalking episodes. We visually identified 17 behavioral events during sleep stage 3 and divided them into two groups: clear clinical episodes (n = 7) and simple movements associated with burst of delta waves (n = 10). Source power topography in the delta range (1-4 Hz) was computed using LORETA. Source images during selected episodes were compared to 30 second-windows of baseline stage 3 sleep. Comparisons were performed using statistical non-parametric mapping with supra-threshold cluster tests. Events were associated with an increase of delta power over the right frontopolar prefrontal cortex (rPFC) / Broadman area 10 (BA10) at their onset. This finding was clearly observable even when considering only clear-cut events, followed by the involvement of the right dorsolateral and medial prefrontal cortex / BA9 and of the left superior temporal gyrus/ BA 22. Conclusion We were able to replicate a recently published case report by our group, where we highlighted the putative role of rPFC and PFC and prefronto-temporal circuit in DOA episodes. Intriguingly, we observed a lateralization of this effect, with a prominent right frontal involvement. Novel research has shown a physiological asymmetry in the generation of large slow waves between the two hemispheres. An increased right-left unbalance might prime behavioral episodes in DOA patients.

Abstract:
Fossil fuel refining produces over 70 Mt of excess sulfur annually from for which there is currently no practical use. Recently, methods to convert waste sulfur to recyclable and biodegradable polymers have been delineated. In this report, a commercial bisphenol A (BPA) derivative, 2,2′,5,5′-tetrabromo(bisphenol A) (Br4BPA), is explored as a potential organic monomer for copolymerization with elemental sulfur by RASP (radical-induced aryl halide-sulfur polymerization). Resultant copolymers, BASx (x = wt% sulfur in the monomer feed, screened for values of 80, 85, 90, and 95) were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Analysis of early stage reaction products and depolymerization products support proposed S–Caryl bond formation and regiochemistry, while fractionation of BASx reveals a sulfur rank of 3–6. Copolymers having less organic cross-linker (5 or 10 wt%) in the monomer feed were thermoplastics, whereas thermosets were accomplished when 15 or 20 wt% of organic cross-linker was used. The flexural strengths of the thermally processable samples (>3.4 MPa and >4.7 for BAS95 and BAS90, respectively) were quite high compared to those of familiar building materials such as portland cement (3.7 MPa). Furthermore, copolymer BAS90 proved quite resistant to degradation by oxidizing organic acid, maintaining its full flexural strength after soaking in 0.5 M H2SO4 for 24 h. BAS90 could also be remelted and recast into shapes over many cycles without any loss of mechanical strength. This study on the effect of monomer ratio on properties of materials prepared by RASP of small molecular aryl halides confirms that highly cross-linked materials with varying physical and mechanical properties can be accessed by this protocol. This work is also an important step towards potentially upcycling BPA from plastic degradation and sulfur from fossil fuel refining.

Abstract:
Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) can improve different motor, sensory, and cognitive behaviors. However, it is unclear how this stimulation affects brain activity to facilitate these improvements. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is inexpensive, portable, and less prone to motion artifacts than other neuroimaging technology. Thus, fNIRS has the potential to provide insight into how nGVS affects cortical activity during a variety of natural behaviors. Here we sought to: (1) determine if fNIRS can detect cortical changes in oxygenated (HbO) and deoxygenated (HbR) hemoglobin with application of subthreshold nGVS, and (2) determine how subthreshold nGVS affects this fNIRS-derived hemodynamic response. A total of twelve healthy participants received nGVS and sham stimulation during a seated, resting-state paradigm. To determine whether nGVS altered activity in select cortical regions of interest (BA40, BA39), we compared differences between nGVS and sham HbO and HbR concentrations. We found a greater HbR response during nGVS compared to sham stimulation in left BA40, a region previously associated with vestibular processing, and with all left hemisphere channels combined (p < 0.05). We did not detect differences in HbO responses for any region during nGVS (p > 0.05). Our results suggest that fNIRS may be suitable for understanding the cortical effects of nGVS.

And then testing for slump, setting time, and compressive strength was conducted. According to test results, the compressive strength of concrete using the bottom ash was lower than that of concrete using natural sand (BA0 concrete). But by adjusting the amount of bottom ash in concrete according tab density so that the fine aggregate proportions change 44% to 38%, the compressive strength of concrete using the bottom ash could even be higher than BA0 concrete. And as the polymeric resin content of bottom ash concrete increased, strength would be increased drastically, but proper dispersant should be cooperated with polymeric resin cement with fine bottom ash powders.

Early-life adversity (ELA) may cause glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity and is more common with major depression disorder and in suicide decedents. We sought to determine whether NMDA-receptor binding is altered with suicide and ELA. Methods A total 52 postmortem cases were organized as 13 quadruplets of suicide and non-suicide decedents matched for age, sex, and postmortem interval, with or without reported ELA (≤16 years). Tissue blocks containing dorsal prefrontal (BA8), dorsolateral prefrontal (BA9), or anterior cingulate (BA24) cortex were collected at autopsy. Psychiatrically healthy controls and suicide decedents underwent psychological autopsy to determine psychiatric diagnoses and details of childhood adversity. NMDA receptor binding was determined by quantitative autoradiography of [3H]MK-801 binding (displaced by unlabeled MK-801) in 20-µm-thick sections. Results [3H]MK-801 binding was not associated with suicide in BA8, BA9, or BA24. However, [3H]MK-801 binding with ELA was less in BA8, BA9, and BA24 independent of suicide (P < .05). [3H]MK-801 binding was not associated with age or postmortem interval in any brain region or group. Conclusions Less NMDA receptor binding with ELA is consistent with the hypothesis that stress can cause excitotoxicity via excessive glutamate, causing either NMDA receptor downregulation or less receptor binding due to neuron loss consequent to the excitotoxicity.

Abstract:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a widespread neuronal degenerative disorder with unexplored etiology. It is associated with various pathological events. In particular, the prefrontal cortex Brodmann area 9 (BA9) region is affected in PD. This frontal lobe brain region plays an important role in cognitive, motor, and memory-related functions. BA9 develops Lewy bodies in PD patients and shows essential changes in transcriptome and proteome, connected with mitochondria related pathways, protein folding pathways, and metallothioneins. Recently, altered adenosine to inosine mRNA editing patterns have been detected in various neurological pathologies. In this article, we present an investigation of differences in A-to-I RNA editing levels and specificity of mRNA editing sites in brain tissues of healthy and PD patients based on RNA sequencing data. Overall, decreased editing levels in the brains of PD patients were observed, potential editing sites with altered editing during PD were identified, and the role of different adenosine deaminases in this process was analyzed.
