Abstract:
ENTRENCHED PATRIARCHALISM AND HONOUR CRIMES: THE HISTORIES OF WOMEN WHO OVERCAME GENDER VIOLENCE AND BECAME ICONS TO HUMAN RIGHTS Violence against woman is still a terrible consequence present around the world. In several areas where entrenched patriarchalism is real, for example, in Pakistan, Sudan, Senegal, Iran, woman’s body is target to be violated in a constant way. It has been justified by means of social traditionalism. So, this text seeks to explain through women’s biographies who were victims of honor crimes (Pakistani Mukhtar Mai and Senegalese Kady Koita) the violence of gender and its overcoming. The aim is to think of abuses and oppression, which were experienced by these women from communities where the patriarchal essence is still imperative. This discussion lays on biographies, which were read in a hermeneutic In methodological terms, firstly, it is sought to present the meaning of patriarchalism. After this, some biographies will be showed and, finally, thought in the light of theories originated from areas such as gender, violence, cultural relativism and human rights.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper addresses the issue of animal biographies in French-language literature. While ethology, philosophy and history have only been recently interested in it, this issue has always fascinated writers, especially authors of naturalistic inspiration desirous of describing the lives of the animals they were observing, and « animalistic » writers fascinated by the animals whose lives they share or whose worlds they dwell in. I examine the works of Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949), Jacques Delamain (1874-1953), Louis Pergaud (1882-1915) and Maurice Genevoix (1890-1980), to highlight to what extent this literary corpus individualizes and personalizes animal existences, that is to s ay, represents their lived experiences. In the end, we come to understand how important the issue of personal biographies of animals is.

Abstract:
Reviews of Joan of Arc books often rightly begin by asking whether there is the need for yet another book on Joan of Arc. In the case of biographies, one is tempted to answer, no. The known facts have not changed over 600 years, and new angles from which her life can be approached do not emerge as often as do new biographies. Oddly, however, the kind of detailed comparative study of Joan’s afterlife in England through four centuries, which Gail Orgelfinger has accomplished in this vigorous new book, still needs to be done for French chronicles (no less) and much of her French afterlife.

Abstract:
Some academic libraries in Zaire were established and sustained during the colonial period, mainly by missionaries. Before Zaire was granted independence in 1960, three important academic institutions of higher education were known and had libraries. These were: Grand Seminaire de Majidi, Université Lovanium and Université Officielle du Congo. This school trained candidates for priesthood in the Catholic Church. In 1953, its library had 19,500 volumes for teachers and 4,500 for students reading philosophy and theology. Access to the teachers’ collection was restricted unless particular students had special permission to enter the library. (Tete Wersey 1983) mentioned that the library had a general catalogue on fiches with 4 clear sections: (a) Africa; (b) Sciences; (c) Biographies and (d) Africans’ Biographies.

Abstract:
Abstract This article approaches Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ b. Mūsā’s contribution to the stabilization of Mālikīsm in the Islamic West through his characterization of three important Andalusī figures of the school: Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, Abū l-Walīd al-Bāǧī and Abū Bakr al-Ṭurṭūšī. ʿIyāḍ’s biographies of these scholars in two of his works, Tartīb al-madārik and al-Ġunya, are compared with those of Ibn Farḥūn (d. 799/1397) in his al-Dībāǧ al-mudhab. These biographical dictionaries, Tartīb and Dibāǧ, are the two main sources for the pre-modern history of Mālikīsm. The results of this comparison go beyond an analysis of Iyāḍ’s contribution to the stabilization of the Mālikī school in the Maghrib. The strong dependence of the Dībāǧ on the Tartīb reveals Ibn Farḥūn’s vision of his great Maghribī predecessor which in turn forms an interesting intra-history of Mālikīsm worth preserving. Using Ibn Farḥūn’s Dībāǧ as a point of comparison also helps us to observe how the circumstances projected by the Tartīb evolved over time and space thus contributing to a better understanding of the process of doctrinal stabilization and social normalization of the Mālikī madhab West but also East. After introducing ʿIyāḍ’s facet as a historian and a biographer in Section 1, I present his biographies of the three selected scholars. In Section 3, I discuss the main differences in the way ʿIyāḍ and Ibn Farḥūn approached each of their contributions to Mālikīsm to wrap up the significance of these differences in the conclusions.

Abstract:
This article analyses problems to deal with when writing biographies of prominent figures from armed forces. Starting with a statement that military sources are very specific and taking into account their relatively unified origin (all are created by the military) and topic (all issues related to armed forces) an essential division should be introduced at the very beginning. Military sources can be divided into (A) peaceful time sources and (B) conflict time sources (armed forces at their active stage during wars, preparations to war, riots, etc.). The article suggests some methods and sources for writing military biographies and also points out the necessity to include the motives guiding particular actions, i.e. why those people chose to act that way though other ways were, or seemed to be, open. The author also emphasises the necessity to employ methods from personality psychology.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify key predictors of centenarian survival in Oklahoma. Data originated from N = 607 centenarian biographies maintained within Oklahoma Centenarians, Inc. historical records database. Biographies were analyzed and coded for demographic content. IBM/SPSS 23.0 was then used to compute linear regression analyses to examine the association of predictor variables sex, race, education, cohort, and longevity secret relative to days of survival. Only race (std. B = .10, p < .05) and cohort (std. B = -.11, p < .01) emerged as significant predictors of overall survivorship. Non-white centenarians live longer than their White-Caucasian counterparts; whereas earlier-born cohorts have shorter survival. Closer examination of these findings revealed that non-White centenarians have historically lived an average of 300.38 days longer than their White counterparts; whereas later born cohorts have historically an average of 48.10 days shorter than earlier-born cohorts. Despite the fact that sex and subjective longevity secrets failed to yield any significance, further inspection revealed two interesting highlights. First, centenarian males have historically lived an average of 147.89 days less than female centenarians. Second, centenarians who cite God as the secrete to their longevity have historically lived 100.23 fewer days than centenarians who attribute their longevity to something else. Results have implications to further understanding the interplay of race and human longevity, as well as variables attributed to improved survivorship across successive cohorts. Further discussion relative to health practices and policies to improve longevity in states like Oklahoma will be further highlighted.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify the pieces of biographical information that are most relevant for the study of Russian as a heritage language. It builds on a review of questionnaires for studying linguistic biographies that are currently used in articles and methodological materials by different researchers. We perform a critical analysis and comparison of these questionnaires, which aims at a more systematic and condensed approach to the gathering of relevant sociolinguistic data. This comparison showed that the most relevant types of biographical information are the following: (a) general biographical information, including data on the acquisition and proficiency in the languages of the participants, (b) information on language use in different communicative domains by the informant, (c) data on the attitudes of the informant towards the heritage language, and the language of the country of residence, (d) data on the informant's selfassessment of proficiency in the heritage language in general and mastery of basic skills. The research results can be useful not only for studying heritage languages, but also with a little refinement to studies on second and third language acquisition.

Abstract:
A dissertação procura apresentar uma leitura do poema "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" à luz da ironia romântica.
