Mellor, Gavin. "Professional football and its supporters in Lancashire, circa 1946-1985." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2003. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/1744/.

Full text
Abstract:
The academic study of Association Football and other sports is now regularly regarded as a valid and essential part of disciplines including psychology, history, philosophy, geography and sociology. The sociology and social history of Association Football in England for the period after the Second World War has, until recently, been dominated by the study of hooliganism and the recent commercialisation of the game. This has left a significant gap in the historiography of English foothall, particularly in terms of supporters' changing relationships with clubs in the period from 1946 onwards. This project has four principal aims. These are to assess the social make-up of postwar football crowds in Lancashire; to analyse the fall in attendances that occurred at most Lancashire football clubs in the post-war period; to assess the developing relationship between football and social identity in post-war Lancashire; and to evaluate attempts to reconnect football clubs with football communities from the late l970s to the mid-1980s. The project is focused on Lancashire as this region provides an exceptionally good context for analysing post-war football supporters, containing both declining town-based clubs such as Preston North End and Blackpool, and bigcity teams such as Liverpool and Manchester United. It centres on the period from circa 1946 to 1985 as most professional football clubs returned to normality after wartime dislocation in 1946, whilst the game underwent a number of fundamental changes after the Bradford City fire, Heysel Stadium disaster and other incidents that occurred in 1985. Through documentary analysis, the evaluation of socio-economic statistics, oral history interviews, and sociological debates concerning the respective influences of structure and agency on historical developments, the project produced a number of important conclusions. It was found that football crowds in the immediate post-war period were probably more heterogeneous than has previously been thought in terms of class, gender and geographical origins. It was also discovered that a variety of socio-economic influences including increasing affluence and consumption, rising marriage rates, geographical movement, increasing home ownership, and rising unemployment all acted as important factors in determining the frequency of people's football attendance in Lancashire at various points between 1946 and 1985. The project also found that football clubs were central agencies in producing feelings of local and regional identity in Lancashire in the 1940s and 1950s. However, it was noted that people came to construct their social and sporting identities differently from the early 1 960s onwards with the result that a bifurcation occurred between many football clubs and football communities. In the final section of the project, the successes and failures of responses to this situation are judged by studying formal football and community initiatives and changes in football fan culture in Lancashire in the l980s. These developments are used to partly explain how certain Lancashire football clubs and football communities came to be connected once more in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Chang, Young-Shim. "Reading Handel: A Textual and Musical Analysis of Handel's Acis and Galatea (1708, 1718)." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2005. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5582/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is two-fold: one is to analyze the narratives of Acis and Galatea written by Ovid, and the two libretti by Handel's librettists including Nicola Giuvo (1708) and John Gay (1718) with John Hughes and Alexander Pope; the other is to correlate this textual analysis within the musical languages. A 1732 pastiche version is excluded because its bilingual texts are not suitable for the study of relationships between meaning and words. For this purpose, the study uses the structural theory- -mainly that of Gérard Genette--as a theoretical framework for the analysis of the texts. Narrative analysis of Acis and Galatea proves that the creative process of writing the libretto is a product of a conscious acknowledgement of its structure by composer and librettists. They put the major events of the story into recitative and ensemble. By examining the texts of both Handel's work, I explore several structural layers from the libretti: the change of the characterization to accommodate a specific occasion and the composer's response to contemporary English demand for pastoral drama with parodistic elements, alluding to the low and high class of society. Further, Polyphemus is examined in terms of relationships with culture corresponding to his recurrent pattern of appearance.

While the impact of Darwin's theory of evolution on Victorian and modernist literature has been well-documented, very little critical attention has been paid to the influence of Lamarckian evolutionary theory on literary portrayals of human progress during this same period. Lamarck's theory of inherited acquired characteristics provided an attractive alternative to the mechanism and materialism of Darwin's theory of natural selection for many writers in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, particularly those who refused to relinquish the role of the individual will in the evolutionary process. Lamarckian rhetoric permeated an ideologically diverse range of discourses related to progress, including reproduction, degeneration, race, class, eugenics, education, and even art. By analyzing the literary texts of Olive Schreiner, G.B. Shaw, and W.B. Yeats alongside their polemical writing, I demonstrate how Lamarckism inflected these writers' perceptions of the mechanism of human evolution and their ideas about human progress, and I argue that their work helped to sustain Lamarck's cultural influence beyond his scientific relevance. In the dissertation's introduction, I place the work of these three writers in the context of the Neo-Darwinian and Neo-Lamarckian evolutionary debates in order to establish the scientific credibility and cultural attractiveness of Lamarckism during this period. Chapter II argues that Schreiner creates her own evolutionary theory that rejects the cold, competitive materialism inherent in Darwinism and builds upon Lamarck's mechanism, modifying Lamarckism to include a uniquely feminist emphasis on the importance of community, motherhood, and self-sacrifice for the betterment of the human race. In Chapter III, I demonstrate that Shaw's "metabiological" religion of Creative Evolution, as portrayed in Man and Superman and Back to Methuselah , is not simply Bergsonian vitalism repackaged as a Neo-Lamarckian evolutionary theory but, rather, a uniquely Shavian theory of human progress that combines religious, philosophical, and political elements and is thoroughly steeped in contemporary evolutionary science. Finally, Chapter IV examines the interplay between Yeats's aesthetics and his anxieties about class in both his poetry and his 1939 essay collection On the Boiler to show how Lamarckian modes of thought inflected his understanding of degeneration and reproduction and eventually led him to embrace eugenics.

The abundance of B mesons at B factories opens the door to the search in rare decays for physics outside of the Standard Model. Flavor-changing neutral current transitions proceed only via higher order in the Standard Model, resulting in a b [arrow right] s³y branching fraction of about 3 x 10 -4 , but hypothesized particles could alter the rate significantly. Decays of B mesons that proceed via this electroweak penguin diagram are an interesting example of flavor-changing neutral currents, due to the large number of accessible final states with observables that are sensitive to new processes. This dissertation describes the analyses of such decays B - [arrow right] p ³, B - [arrow right] £ 0 p ³, B - [arrow right] p and B - [arrow right] p using about 350 million B meson pairs recorded by the BABAR detector in the years 2001 through 2006. In addition to the decay rate, the distribution of the invariant mass of the baryon pair is presented, using a method for statistical unfolding. The analysis is the first of these decays at the BABAR experiment and lays the groundwork for future analyses of the branching fractions and angular correlations of b [arrow right] s decays containing A hyperons and other baryons at BABAR or higher luminosity B factories.

Abstract:

The following thesis aim to describe the design process when creating a music video. How does it differ from designing other digital artefacts? And what are the similarities. Our focus has been to work with the band and their song as a brand with a specific market. The conclusion is that the design process is not as regulated when working with a band compared to a company. This made it possible to create a more artistic design. The effects of the video depends on how the fans will react on it. A well-produced video is not necessarily equal to a successful one. In this aspect it does not differ from making a commercial for a brand.

Monk, Derek. "Investment in training : a matter for rational decision making?" Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2002. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/1740/.

Full text
Abstract:
Vocational training has attracted increasing attention over the past two decades both in theoretical and policy terms. This study set out to raise questions about the management of such training. Evidence from previous work suggests that policy makers responsible for training are faced with exogenous forces that make decision making prone to irrational choices. This study attempts to fill the gap in research on post entry screening by examining a series of longitudinal data. The approach has been through the use of interviews with trainees from selected industries (British Gas, the football industry and the provision of a public library service). Between them, these industries represent a large cross section of the British economy. British Gas is an example of a former nationalised industry that has been subsequently privatised. By contrast, the football industry is(and always has been) in private "hands". Finally, this study examined the provision of ICT training given to public library service personnel in both the UK and Finland. The aim, in all cases, was to assess whether resources devoted to training were used efficiently. A second aim was to locate the findings in the context of a debate between the neoclassical school of economic analysis and its institutional rival, especially Internal Labour Market theory. The evidence suggests that institutional theory explains post entry progression better than its neoclassical rival. Furthermore, the research also concludes that managers charged with the task of implementing training schemes frequently do not evaluate them and as a consequence, the stated aims of organisations' training strategies are not realised. This situation is likely to continue unless more thought is given to the issue of monitoring training carefully both at a micro and macro level. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that industry-wide (or macroeconomic) policies designed to increase employees' skills do not necessarily result in the desired gains at a local (or microeconomic) level.

Vaughan, Amanda Elaine. "An evolutionary perspective of human female rape." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2002. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/1747/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis assessed whether rape is an adaptive mating strategy. which was naturally selected for in our ancestral past. It investigated a number of constructs. namely: fertility value; victim-offender relationship; socio-economic status; rape proclivity; actual sexual aggression; and sociosexual orientation. There were two types of studies: studies 1-3 involved archival data, e.g. the use of criminal statistics. and studies 4-7 assessed participant data, e.g. rape attitudes. Study 1 found that fertility value (FV) was related to rape prevalence, as was reproductive value (RV). In addition, offenders with a nonreproductive sexual preference tended to rape a victim with a low FV. and offenders who committed a secondary offence tended to rape a victim with high FV. Study 2 found that there was a smaller number of offences committed against strangers and partners, and a larger number committed against step-relatives and acquaintances. More rapes were committed by low status than high status men. even when the base rate was accounted for. Study 3, showed that there was a relationship between the population gender ratio and rape prevalence. However. the covariable population density was positively related to rape prevalence. Study 4- found that there was more disapproval of a depicted rape committed by a low status offender. A low status offender who raped a victim with low RV attracted more disapproval. Study 5 showed that marital rape was disapproved of more than both stranger and acquaintance rape. Individuals with a short-term mating strategy disapproved of rape more than those with a long-term strategy, and a long-term strategist disapproved of a marital rape less than a short-term strategist. Study 6 found that those who possessed a promiscuous ideology perceived their future life to be limited, in particular the likelihood of being happily married. There was no relationship found between perceived future life and sexual aggression. In study 7. it was found that those who had a more unrestricted sociosexual orientation were more likely to have asymmetrical bodily traits (e.g. ear height. finger length). and that the right hand 20:40 digit ratio (a measure of prenatal testosterone)was significantly related to actual sexual aggression. Overall. there was partial support for rape as an adaptive mechanism. but the studics wcre also consistent with a by-product explanation of rape.

Smith, Paul B. "The materialist interpretation of John Millar's philosophical history : towards a critical appraisal." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1998. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1740/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines aspects of John Millar's philosophical history in order to provide grounds for a critical appraisal of the content of his contribution to social and historical science. Using Millar's published books and lectures in civil law as primary sources, it is suggested that Millar applied an empiricist method to the principles of jurisprudence. Millar shared this method with Hume and Smith. Implicit within the method was the abstraction of an ideal observer or spectator. This abstraction was derived from the use of an empiricist method to understand the operations of the minds of particular individual subjects on the pre-determined experience of immediate circumstances. The method assumed that the operations of subjects' minds on the objects of their experience included classification, comparison, generalisation, conjecture, inference, imaginative identification and experiment. Millar's method is therefore characterised as both conjectural and individualistic. Through a critique of Ronald Meek's seminal statements on Millar's materialism, certain issues are investigated for further critical appraisal. These include Millar's political economy, his conception of civil society, and his political theory. It is argued that Millar had a conception of generalised commodity production and exchange; that this conception was derived from the assumption that subjects are self-interest; and that the latter assumption was necessary to explain the origins, emergence and development of civil and political society. Millar assumed that individuals' pursuit of self-interested goals gave rise to ideas of positive law, freely alienable property, different distributions of property, and feelings of liberty. It is suggested that Millar's theorisation of the effect of the latter on forms of government is derived from a combined use of Smith's principles of authority and utility with Hume's commercialised Harringtonianism.

Hargreaves, John A. "Religion and society in the parish of Halifax, c. 1740-1914." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 1991. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/4606/.

Full text
Abstract:
Most recent studies of religion and society have focussed on the period from c. 1880 to 1914, basing their investigations upon late-Victorian newspaper censuses of churchgoing. This thesis aims to study the development of religion in its economic and social context in a large northern industrial parish over a longer period of time from c. 1740 to 1914. In religious terms this period extends from the mid-eighteenth century Evangelical Revival to the decline of organised religion in the early twentieth century. In economic and social terms the period is characterised by the transformation of the parish from a semi-rural, proto-industrial society dominated by a relatively small but expanding market town, into a predominantly urban advanced industrial society dominated by a medium-sized textile manufacturing town and several smaller urban centres of textile production; supporting a wide diversity of associated industries and trades, but still containing within its boundaries sharply contrasting urban and semi-rural environments. The thesis aims to assess how religious expression within the parish of Halifax was affected by the changing economic and social environment, in particular the urban-industrial experience, and how religion helped shape the new urbanindustrial society during the period from the middle of the eighteenth century to the outbreak of the First World War. It argues that whilst the pessimistic view of a moribund Georgian Church of England can no longer be sustained by the Halifax evidence, the Established Church nevertheless lacked the logistical resources to respond effectively to the new urbanindustrial society as it emerged within the parish in the lateeighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, providing an opportunity for the growth of Evangelical Nonconformity, especially Methodism. It maintains that Evangelical Nonconformity and an Anglican Church renewed by Evangelical incumbencies during the period 1790-1827 and reformed as a consequence of national legislation in the 1840s played a vital role within the expanding urban-industrial society, surviving the experience of industrialisation and urbanisation and displaying a remarkable vibrancy, despite underlying downward trends in churchgoing in the late-Victorian era. It suggests that the causes of the decline of organised religion during this period were complex, but related more to the onset of industrial-urban stagnation and decline than to the experience of industrial-urban expansion.

The Two Trees is a fifteen-minute musical composition for orchestra. Inspired by William Butler Yeats' poem of the same name, the piece depicts the images described by Yeats' poetic narrative through a double theme and variations form consisting of two contrasting themes that are related, one ascending and one descending. Each theme represents one of the two contrasting sections of the poem and is followed by a set of five variations for a total of ten. Since the rhyme scheme of each section of the poem is divided into five phrases of four lines, each musical variation corresponds to four lines of text.

Rubadiri, Lindiwe. "Evacuation modelling of mixed-ability populations in fire emergencies." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 1994. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/1704/.

Full text
Abstract:
UK statistics have shown that a significant percentage of fatalities in fires have suffered from some kind of disability. In this context 'disability' relates to a person's physical or mental condition that impinges on their ability to react and move promptly in an emergency. Various evacuation modelling techniques are being adopted to study the movement of occupants during emergencies since the exposure of people to fires for experimental purposes is unethical. However, many evacuation models have ignored the effects of disability on escape potential and therefore tend to predict optimal evacuation times. Moreover, whilst providing some valuable insights into certain factors affecting occupant movement, current models are generally presented in isolation and fail to define a general framework for designing solutions to fire safety engineering problems. The purpose of this research programme was to develop a more general methodology for predicting evacuation times of mixed-ability populations. This was made possible through the development and use of a novel concept of evacuation peiformance index (EPI), which is the relative ease of evacuating a disabled person compared to an able-bodied person, founded on a consideration of the effects of disabilities and mobility aids on evacuation times. The author shows how this concept relates three aspects of fire safety, namely, individual characteristics of disabled occupants, the amount of assistance they require, and building design and environmental factors. She contends that the evacuation peifornzance index of a class of individuals is primarily dependent on these three categories. Experimental data to verify the above claim was collected from careflully monitored evacuation drills involving a group of disabled people. Their EPIs were determined along a pre-defined route from which their evacuation times were calculated. Comparisons between predicted times using the EPI concept and measured times from alternative empirical data were seen to be in reasonable agreement. An iterative design procedure is also suggested; one that is capable of predicting worst possible evacuation times by incorporating measures of EPI and escape route dimensions and details. The EPI concept provides fire safety engineering with a logical design philosophy, which is flexible and easily comprehensible. It endeavours to increase understanding of evacuation of disabled people, and provide a simplified mechanism for fire safety design and planning of evacuation procedures.

Heath, Emily. "Studies of EBV infection of B Lymphocytes ex Vivo and in Vitro." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1714/.

Full text
Abstract:
EBV is a lymphotropic herpesvirus that establishes lifelong persistence in the memory B cell compartment of the human host. It is still unclear, however, whether the virus infects memory B cells directly, or first targets naive B cells, driving them to differentiate into memory B cells via germinal centre (GC) transit. Using ex vivo analysis of sorted B cell subsets, we have found that whilst EBV preferentially colonises isotype-switched memory B cells, the virus was excluded from tonsillar GC B cells. Furthermore we found substantial viral loads in non-switched memory B cell populations, whose origins are likely to be germinal centre-independent. Using in vitro infection experiments, we showed that enzymes AID, UNG and pol-η, which are associated with the GC processes somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class switch recombination (CSR) were upregulated in EBV-infected B cells. Indeed following in vitro transformation, SHM of immunoglobulin (Ig) genes was induced in a proportion naive B cells. Whilst these cells did not undergo CSR following EBV infection alone, additional cytokine stimulation together with CD40L was able to induce isotype switching. EBV infection in vitro together with the provision of appropriate signals was therefore able to induce genotypic and phenotypic memory B cell characteristics in naive B cells, in a non-GC environment. Taken together our findings suggest that GC transit is not an essential requirement for EBV colonisation of the memory B cell population.

Fagherazzi, Onorato Jonas. "A questão da possibilidade da liberdade na Crítica da Razão Pura : uma interpretação de B 560 e B 586." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/5799.

Abstract:

Fare, Diane. "The edges of the unsaid : transgressive practices in the fiction of Kathy Acker." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2002. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/1741/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the first full-length study of the fiction-of Kathy Acker, a radical and transgressive American female writer (1947-1997). The study maps the development of Acker's fiction by focusing on the political dimension of her aesthetic strategies. It explores the politics of plagiarism and appropriation; the subversive representation of gender and sexual politics; and the anarchistic impulse of Acker's work. The main theoretical and political approaches employed are: feminist theory, poststructuralism, abjection and anarchism. The study begins with an introduction to Acker's life, since there is a significant if problematic autobiographical impulse in her writing, and her socio-cultural context. It proceeds to a detailed critical exploration of work published between 1968 and 1986, drawing attention to Acker's affinities with a poststructuralist project. Acker's strategies of juxtaposition, paradox, and contradiction, alongside her fragmented, non-linear, digressive narratives, are read as a form of social critique. Her use and abuse of the white, male, Euro-centric canon is examined in light of the construction of female sexuality, and Acker's focus on phallocentric language as a source of subjugation is also considered. The study then argues for and interrogates Acker's move towards a more affirmative narrative strategy before looking in detail at her fiction of the 1990s - fiction which, until now, has received slight attention. Through close readings of her later novels, the study illustrates how Julia Kristeva's concept of the abject is fruitful for an examination of Acker's work, and examines cross-cultural intertextuality (from the horror film to the avant-garde). It also relates the trope of piracy that is present in Acker's later works to the political ideology of anarchism. The conclusion to the thesis argues that Acker's strength lies in her uncompromising belief in the avant-garde, and details her sustained attempt to make critically incisive political art.

Highly conjugated, carbon rich molecules are of great interest due to their unique optoelectronic properties. These molecules are now recognized as suitable materials for advanced materials applications such as light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, and thin film transistors. Of particular interest is the indenofluorene (IF) scaffold, a 6-5-6-5-6-fused ring system that holds a striking topological similarity to pentacene, a very successful electron donating organic semiconductor. Also of interest is another class of compounds referred to as tetrakis(arylethynyl)benzenes, TAEBs, which are cruciform-shaped molecules that possess numerous pathways for electronic and photonic transfer and are amenable to a host of substitution patterns. Chapter I examines the history of the IF scaffold and its development over the last century through the use of literature examples relating to both its synthesis and potential use as an emerging class of electron accepting materials. Chapter II introduces the feasibility of stable, fully conjugated IFs. Two examples of 5,6,11,12-tetraethynyl-indeno[1,2- b ]fluorenes are synthesized where their structural and optoelectronic properties are explored. Chapter III further explores the IF scaffold and outlines the synthesis of a series of 6,12-diethynylindeno[1,2-b ]fluorenes in conjunction with detailed computational, structural, and photophysical studies. Chapter IV discusses the synthesis and characterization of a series of 6,12-diarylindeno[1,2- b ]fluorenes and examines their structural and optoelectronic properties. Chapter V describes a series of donor/acceptor-functionalized TAEBs that incorporate the 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a,-diaza-s -indacene moiety, better known as BODIPY, as the acceptor unit. Additionally, two TAEB molecules and three structurally related bis(arylethynyl)benzene (BAEB) isomers where only acceptors are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the donor group are synthesized. This dissertation includes both previously published and unpublished co-authored material.

This dissertation describes a search for the decays B 0 [arrow right] invisible and B 0 [arrow right] invisible+γ, where invisible refers to a final state consisting of long lived particles with a low cross-section for interaction with matter, leading to a low probability of detection in typical particle detectors. While the branching fractions for these decays predicted by the Standard Model are far below what could be feasably measured by current experiments, new physics such as right-handed neutrinos propagating in large extra space-time dimensions or light R-parity violating neutralinos in supersymmetry could greatly enhance the branching fractions. The decays are searched for in data corresponding to 423.5 fb -1 integrated luminosity produced at the Υ(4 S ) resonance collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory, corresponding to 2.30 × 10 8 B 0 B¯ 0 pairs. Using those events that contain a hadronically reconstructed neutral B meson, evidence for the signal decays is sought in the remainder of the event. In (5.00 ± 0.02) × 10 5 events with a fully reconstructed neutral B meson, a total of 39 events consistent with the B 0 [arrow right] invisible decay mode are seen in data with an expected background of 28.5 ± 7.8(stat.)±9.2(syst.) events, and 8 events consistent with the B 0 [arrow right] invisible+γ decay mode are seen in data mode with an expected background of 14.1 ± 5.5(stat.)±8.1(syst.) events, from which upper limits of [Special characters omitted.] ( B 0 [arrow right] invisible) < 11.7 × 10 -5 and of [Special characters omitted.] ( B 0 [arrow right] invisible+γ) < 4.3 × 10 -5 at the 90% confidence level are obtained.

Oregon is recognized nationally for its collection of bridges designed by innovative civil engineer Conde B. McCullough in the 1920s and 1930s. His concern for aesthetic value fostered bridge designs that are unique in their architectural details and enhance their natural surroundings. Unfortunately, several of McCullough's bridges have deteriorated with age requiring the Oregon Department of Transportation to devise solutions which keep these bridges safe for public use and at the same time retain their historic quality. The purpose of this thesis project was to develop a typological study of his bridge designs, investigate the results of strategies applied to maintain them, and provide an analysis of the extent to which they sustain the historic integrity of structures they were applied to. It is hoped this study will help inform future decisions made regarding the effective preservation of McCullough's legacy.

Abstract:
By focusing on the “nature” of mapping, this thesis falls under the category of critical cartography closely associated with the work of Brian Harley in the 1980s and early 1990s. As such the purpose of this research is to highlight the historical context of British maps, map-making and map-reading in relation to West Africa between 1749 and 1841. I argue that maps lie near the heart of Britain’s interactions with West Africa though their appearance, construction and use evolved dramatically during this period. By beginning this study with a prominent French example (Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville’s 1749 “Afrique”) I show how British map-makers adapted cartography from France for their own purposes before circumstances encouraged the development of new materials. Because of the limited opportunities to make enquiries in the region and the relatively few people involved in affecting change to the map’s content, this thesis highlights the episodes and manufactured narratives which feature in the chronology of evolving cartographies. This study concludes with the failure of the 1841 Niger Expedition, when Britain’s humanitarian agenda saw the attempted establishment of a model farm on banks of the Niger River and the negotiation of anti-slave trade treaties with nearby Africans. The cartography and geographical knowledge which supported this scheme is in stark contrast with what existed in the mid-eighteenth century. More than simply illustrating geographical and ethnographical information though, these maps helped inform Britons about themselves and I argue that much of what occurs here features prominently in national discourses about identity, civilization and the justification of British efforts to improve Africa.

Abstract:
This Study shows that the Shehu's social writings are the reflection of his concept and method of implementation of tajdid. The basic goal of the tajdid was to recreate what he considered the ideal Sunni Islamic society. In order to achieve his objective he unfolded a plan of action which aimed at winning the support of the common people and the 'ulama'. For the people, he mounted a mass mobilization to boost religious learning, acquaint them with local beliefs adjudged as bad innovations, and exhort them about the impending End of Time. For the 'ulama', his plan was a reorientation of their attitudes toward moderation in theological and doctrinal matters, and accommodation of legal and religious views other than those of the Maliki School of Law. Further, he expected them to persuade the rulers of Gobir to change their un-Islamic ways and support the new movement. But when the 'ulama' chose not only to adopt a confrontational attitude but to prevail upon the rulers to take hostile measures against his followers, the Shehu took up arms against them and finally established a Caliphate.

Abstract:

In this thesis we study a standard example of refinable functions, that is, functions which can be reproduced by the integer shifts of their own dilations. Using the cardinal B-spline as an introductory example, we prove some of its properties, thereby building a basis for a later extension to the vector setting. Defining a subdivision scheme associated to the B-spline refinement mask, we then present the proof of a well-known convergence result. Subdivision is a powerful tool used in computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) for the generation of curves and surfaces. The basic step of a subdivision algorithm consists of starting with a given set of points, called the initial control points, and creating new points as a linear combination of the previous ones, thereby generating new control points. Under certain conditions, repeated applications of this procedure yields a continuous limit curve. One important goal of this thesis is to study a particular extension of scalar subdivision to matrix subdivision ...

Gauthier-Duchesne, Sarah. "Le concept de liberté dans la Critique de la raison pure." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/34863.

Full text
Abstract:

Seyler, Katrin Jutta. "Opening the cognitive tool-box of migrating sculptors (1680-1794) : an analysis of the epistemic and semiotic structures of the republic of tools." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3275/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the epistemic structures of late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century migrating image-makers with a particular regard for producers of sculpture. By means of an analysis of journals written by the sculptor Franz Ertinger (1669 – 1747) and the glazier Jacques-Louis Ménétra (1738-c.1803) this thesis identifies an epistemic order which was contingent on the worlds of mobility of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century craftsmen. In order to advance the understanding of how artisan image-makers of this period acquired, organised and developed knowledge, the concept of a cognitive tool-box is introduced. Examining a number of cognitive tools, i. e. epistemic strategies, the thesis constructs an interpretative framework through which itinerant artisans were potentially able to derive meanings from situations, objects and communities which were unfamiliar or culturally different in some ways. Due to the emphasis on cognitive aspects, the thesis‟s principal method can be described as an epistemological history of art, taking into consideration historically specific mechanisms of interpretation, exchange and knowledge organisation, such as the building of unwritten archives of artisan histories. The thesis also addresses questions surrounding the identities of migrating craftsmen and suggests the existence of a “Republic of Tools”, tracing the career of one of its highly mobile citizens, the sculptor Johann Eckstein (1735-1817).

Abstract:

Abstract:
xiv, 162 p.
In my dissertation I argue that the invasion of Iraq was a part of a larger project by Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to reestablish the unconstrained use of U.S. military power after the defeat of Vietnam. The study presents the best evidence against the alternative explanations that the invasion of Iraq was the result of an overreaction to 9/11, the threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction, a plan to spread democracy in the Middle East, a desire to protect Israel or a plan to profit from Iraqi oil. The study also challenges the leading explanation among academics that emphasizes the role of the neoconservatives in the decision to invade. These academics argue that neoconservatives, such as Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle, successfully persuaded the American President, George W. Bush, and his Vice President, Dick Cheney, of the necessity to eliminate Saddam Hussein by winning an internal policy battle over realists, such as Secretary of State Colin Powell. With their narrow focus on neoconservatives and realists, scholars have largely overlooked a third group of hawkish policy makers, the primacists. This latter group, centered on Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and Vice President Cheney, had a long standing goal of strengthening the U.S. military and presidential powers in order to pursue U.S. primacy. This goal manifests itself in the invasion of Iraq, a country in the heart of the geopolitically important, oil-rich region of the Persian Gulf. I demonstrate that it was the primacists, not the neoconservatives, who persuaded the President to go to war with Iraq. Through historical process tracing, especially through a close look at the careers of the major policy actors involved and their public statements as well as declassified documents, I provide strong evidence that these leaders wanted to pursue regime change in Iraq upon taking office. The invasion of Iraq would extend the War on Terror, providing an opportunity to pursue their long-held policy of strengthening the power of the presidency and transforming the military into a high-tech and well-funded force.

Abstract:
xv, 186 p. : ill. (some col.)
This dissertation analyzes issues of race, ethnicity, and identity in American comics and visual culture, and identifies important areas for alternative means to cultural authority located at the intersections of verbal and visual representation. The symbolic qualities that communicate ethnicity and give ethnicity meaning in American culture are illuminated in new ways when studied within the context of the highly symbolic medium of comics. Creators of comics are able to utilize iconic qualities, among other unique formal qualities of the medium, to construct new visual narratives around ethnicity and identity, which require new and multidisciplinary perspectives for comprehending their communicative complexity. This dissertation synthesizes cultural and critical analysis in combination with formal analysis in an effort to further advance the understanding of comics and their social implications in regard to race and ethnic identity. Much like film scholars in the 1960s, comics scholars in the United States currently are in the process of establishing a core of methodological and theoretical approaches, including Lacanian theories of the image, the comic mapping of symbolic order, the recognition of self in undetailed faces, comics closure, and the implications of the comics gutter. Drawing upon these ideas and additional perspectives offered by scholars of film and literary studies, such as the relationship between ethnicity and the symbolic, the scopophilic gaze, and filmic suture, I analyze the following visual texts: Henry Kiyama's The Four Immigrants Manga, Gene Yang's American Born Chinese, and Anna Deavere Smith's Twilight: Los Angeles. The dissertation also performs a multimedia analysis of the current ascendency of geek culture, its relationship to the comics medium, and the geek protagonist as an expression of simulated ethnicity. Ultimately, the unique insights offered by the study of comics concerning principles of ethnic iconicity and identity have far reaching implications for scholars of visual and verbal culture in other mediums as well.

This work is concerned with the Refutation of idealism proposed by Kant in the Critique of Pure Reason, where we intend, initially, through a critical and conceptual analysis that the subject demands, to address the questions that Kant raises against skeptical idealism, and also, to position ourselves as to the sufficiency of the proof proposed by Kant as a solution to the problem of the real existence of objects outside consciousness, both in the Fourth paralogism (edition A) and in the Refutation of idealism (edition B). Later we will show that the arguments of the Fourth paralogism of the A edition together with the Refutation of the idealism of the B edition are sufficient for the refutation of the skeptic and finally prove the real existence of the external objects.

This study aims to map the working process in the health area starting from the meeting between the family and health teams and mental trouble carriers./MTC. The area of research was the Family Health Unit of Ozeas Sampaio, which is located in the county of Teresina-PI. As regard to the methodology procedure, we used a semi-structured interview timetable, aimed to detail the care practices, admittance and diagnostics that those teams realize with their users. Three teams of eleven workers each were interviewed. There was a doctor, a nurse and two health community agents in each team. The other tools we used were a camp logbook, in which we wrote down some informal dialogs, daily observations and feelings of the unit, and also the accompaniment of the staffs in house calls as well as the weekly meetings in the unit. Those meetings allowed us the construction of two analytic axes: 1) description of the establishment (Family Health Unit) of the organization, (municipal foundation of health and the service network), and the institutions and practice of health. 2) Analysis of the meetings between the worker and the user of Mental Trouble Carriers. In the first axis, we verified the repetition of the working logic focused on jobs in the hospital with the maintenance of the hierarchical relations between worker and the work processes which dissociate management and watchfulness in health care. We identified the lack of physical structure, the lack of self-confidence of the worker in the attention of the mental health care. At the second axis, we assess that the meetings, at the Family Health Unit (FHU) or at the dwelling of the users cause nuisance, discomfort and anxiety to the workers because they deal with issues that go beyond what is named as being the health order such as life stories, family conflicts, unemployment, hunger, sexual and psychological violence. As a matter of fact, they involve difficulties for having new relationships, reception and responsibility for this request

Full text
Abstract:
The Cello Concerto in B-flat major, G.482, by Italian composer Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), is the composer's most beloved work for the instrument, as well as one of the most performed pieces in the Classical concerto repertoire. Historically, cellists performing this work have used an edition prepared by German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher (1832-1903). However, an 'original' version that was discovered in 1949 is significantly different from that of Grützmacher. A comparison of both editions has revealed that Grützmacher in fact made considerable modifications to Boccherini's 'original.' Along with the issue of having two editions, cellists that have played the 'original' edition have noted that there are certain practical and interpretative matters that are not favorable to the cellist, particularly in terms of the way the music is notated and how it lacks many details. This dissertation provides clarity to these issues by undertaking a comprehensive analysis of both editions in order to make cellists become aware of the differences between both editions by comparing musical elements from a performance practice viewpoint. In addition, I discuss relevant issues that are present in the 'original' version, ultimately providing an alternative performance edition to this score that is based on historically informed performance (HIP) practices. Finally, I hope to draw attention on how a performance edition like this can be useful as a rare critical source to one of the major works from the eighteenth-century cello repertoire.

Harrison, Jennifer Yantis. "A place in between : the story of a French and Miami family." Virtual Press, 2001. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1217385.

Full text
Abstract:
A Place In Between tells the story of the Old Northwest through a French family who lived in Quebec and on the Wabash valley from the 1660s through the 1860s. The Brouillette family illustrates the rise and fall of a cultural and geographical middle ground forged by whites and Algonquian-speaking Indians of the Great Lakes region. The Woodland tribes discussed include the Miami, Wea, Piankashaw, Shawnee, Potawatomi, Delaware and Ottawa. The white participants of this middle ground were primarily French, but were joined at times by certain English, Scottish, Irish and Americans. The middle ground and trade culture created a people of mixed heritage called metis by the French, which means mixed-blood. Because of their place between cultures metis often acted as arbitrators of culture. They often found employment as interpreters, scouts or in the fur trade. The fall of the middle ground included the loss of a valuable Indian country to native people, as well as a shift from a rich cultural interchange to a socially and politically inferior status for the tribal people of the central Great Lakes. This story traces the lives of three main characters: Michel Brouillette, the elder and younger who were both traders; and the French-Miami son, Tahquakeah. Flashbacks to French ancestors illustrate the early creation of the middle ground through trade and military alliances.

Evans, Dennis F. "The Afro-British Slave Narrative: The Rhetoric of Freedom in the Kairos of Abolition." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1999. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2278/.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation argues that the development of the British abolition movement was based on the abolitionists' perception that their actions were kairotic; they attempted to shape their own kairos by taking temporal events and reinterpreting them to construct a kairotic process that led to a perceived fulfillment: abolition. Thus, the dissertation examines the rhetorical strategies used by white abolitionists to construct an abolitionist kairos that was designed to produce salvation for white Britons more than it was to help free blacks. The dissertation especially examines the three major texts produced by black persons living in England during the late eighteenth centuryIgnatius Sancho's Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho (1782), Ottobauh Cugoano's Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery (1787), and Olaudah Equiano's The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African (1789)to illustrate how black rhetoric was appropriated by whites to fulfill their own kairotic desires. By examining the rhetorical strategies employed in both white and black rhetorics, the dissertation illustrates how the abolitionists thought the movement was shaped by, and how they were shaping the movement through, kairotic time. While the dissertation contends that the abolition movement was rhetorically designed to provide redemption, and thus salvation, it illustrates that the abolitionist's intent was not merely to save the slave, but to redeem blacks first in the eyes of white Christians by opening blacks to an understanding and acceptance of God. Perhaps more importantly, abolitionists would use black salvation to buy back their own souls and the soul of their nation in the eyes of God in order to regain their own salvation lost in the slave trade. But ironically, they had to appear to be saving others to save themselves. So white abolitionists used the black narratives to persuade their overwhelmingly white audience that slavery was as bad for them as it was for the African slave. And in the process, a corpus of black writing was produced that gives current readers two glimpses of one world.

Amegatsevi, Kokou Sename. "L'éthique du futur et le défi des technologies du vivant." Thesis, Université Laval, 2013. http://www.theses.ulaval.ca/2013/30255/30255.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
(in English): The thesis focuses on the Loreto litany in Loreto Prague in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the first part, it explores the Loreto litany in its involvement in the liturgy and puts it in context with the reflection of Marian spirituality. The second part examines Loreto litany from the Prague Loreto music collection from the property of Capuchin Order and from the property of the Lobkowicz family. Because some litany have a reduced setting, it extends the view of rural style analysis by examining printed collections of 18th century rural music.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present work is the study of the Pellicer type B/C amphorae of the Castro Marim Castle. This study tries to enlighten what these amphorae were in the elapsing of 2nd Era of the Iron Age and its importance in the trade business in the Turdetânia region. This study allowed to observe that, in the Castro Marim Castle, these amphorae occupy, between the 6th Century and the late 5th Century B.C., a very significant importance, that decreases in the elapsing of the 6th and 3rd century B.C. until its disappearance between the late 3rd Century and the beginnings of the 2nd Century B.C. The situation that occurs between the 6th Century and the 3rd Century B.C. seems to be analogous to the situation in the Cadiz Bay. The localization of the various sites where these amphorae types were discovered, allowed the definition of its possible contents, as for, at the same time, allowed to perceive that the material culture in these sites is, in its all, homogeneous and that we have, most certainly, before us an entire territory, the Turdetânia.

Lipeles, Elliot. "A Study of the Fully Differential Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decay Rate." Thesis, 2004. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/1714/1/thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
We present a study of the fully differential inclusive semileptonic B meson decay rate. Using a maximum likelihood fit, we extract the fractional contributions from the B → Xclv processes with Xc = D, D*, D**, and nonresonant Xc, and the process B → Xulv. From the fit results, we extract moments of B → Xclυ̅ differential decay rate and the partial branching fraction of the B → Xulυ̅ decay in a restricted region of phase space. The region in which the B → Xulυ̅ partial branching fraction is measured is Mx < 1:5 GeV/ c2, q2 > 11 GeV2 / c4. This measurements is used to extract CKM parameter |Vub| = (4:73±0:23±0:82±0:18±0:56±0:66) x 10-3, where the uncertainties are due to statistics, detector systematics, B → Xclv model dependence, B → Xulυ̅ model dependence, and theoretical uncertainties. From the 〈 M2x - M̅2D〉moment, the first moment of the photon energy spectrum in B → X, and the semileptonic B branching fraction, we extract the CKM parameter |Vcb| = (4:12 ± .10 ± 0.09 ± 0.16) x 10-2, where the uncertainties are due to the measurement of the semileptonic B decay rate, the moments measurements, and theoretical uncertainties. Both CKM parameter extractions use Heavy Quark Eective Theory (HQET) predictions for inclusive semileptonic B decay. The measured moments are also used to test related predictions.
