Abstract:
Questionnaires were administered to 118 Secondary College students in the A.C.T. to obtain quantitative data about the students' self perception, about their friendship groups, their relationships with the other members of their family, their attitudes to their education and their employment experiences and expectations. The data also identified away from home students and at home students. The data obtained from these two student groups was analysed. The away from home group of students were then interviewed individually and qualitative data analysed for recurring themes and a profile of the away from home Year 12 student emerged. The away from home students in this A.C.T. study had been through periods of unstable accommodation, poverty, family distress, leaving school or changing schools and had made a conscious decision to complete their Year 12 Certificate to improve their employment opportunities. As a result of this study predictive indicators for an away from home student were generated. Following these findings an understanding of the specific issues and needs of away from home students can be encouraged among student welfare groups, parents and other educational/ welfare bodies. This in turn should assist the student achieve his or her educational outcomes and academic success.

Brkanić, Anita E. "A home away from home : the drivers behind Croatian diaspora mobilisation." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2016. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3363/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to provide a framework for understanding the dynamics and motivations behind the mobilisation of diasporas. What shapes diaspora mobilisation? And when they do get involved in homeland politics, what determines the success of diaspora efforts? How is diaspora mobilisation shaped through human agency? The study will look at the Croatian diaspora in North America which, with a long history of active involvement in the politics of its homeland, brings forth a compelling case for the study of diaspora mobilisation. Are conflict–based arguments sufficient to explain diaspora mobilisation? Are there complementary, but potentially more covert, driving factors behind it? Other studies have identified homeland conflict as important for diaspora mobilisation, but have not shown yet in depth how framing processes work in the presence of charismatic leadership and their framing strategies. Aiming at filling this gap in the literature, this study provides a complementary argument to conflict–based arguments; it focuses on the role of collective action frames (CAF) used by goal–seeking elites in diaspora mobilisation and brings out the effects of agency. It states that while conflict provides important opportunities to mobilise, agents play a crucial role in framing and reframing these opportunities to advance their political goals. This thesis is the first one to give an in depth discussion of specific framing mechanism and how they interconnect with charismatic leadership. By employing the frame analysis approach this study intends to link the literature on collective action frames and framing processes with the research done in Diaspora Studies. In doing so, it will make use of the framing literature in relation to social movement processes that it tries to illuminate. The study identifies effective framing processes, diagnostic, prognostic, and motivational, as crucial for understanding the character, the course and the outcome of diaspora mobilisation and its consequent political influence. The study aims to expand framing theory by contributing to our understanding of how leaders motivate and mobilise resources, generate and identify opportunities, frame issues, plan and develop strategies, recruit support and create change. Human agency has been neglected by the recent emphasis on structures of opportunity and this study is a response to the growing demand for the examination of the numerous ways in which leaders generate social change and create the conditions for the agency of others. However favourable the ‘breeding ground’ presented by the opportunity structure, it only provides potential actors with options. It is ultimately always the parties themselves who must make the best of them. This study shall therefore focus on the leader in charge of the framing processes and his characteristics as one of the key factors explaining his success. In doing so, the study will address an existing gap in the framing literature and divert attention to the role of Franjo Tuđman, the first President of independent Croatia, in constructing diaspora collective action frames. In placing the focus on the leader, the study does not intend to minimise the role of other explanatory factors, e.g. effective resource mobilisation and political opportunity structures (POS), the right configuration of which is essential for the framing processes to be effective. Instead, when addressing these elements of diaspora mobilisation, the study does so through the lens of leadership.

Gore, Mark Timothy. "Being distinctive : university market development strategies away from home." Thesis, University of Bath, 2017. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.723312.

Full text
Abstract:
British universities have become more strategic about their international market development work over the past two decades and have given considerable attention to the planning and implementation of effective international strategies to achieve this. This study considers the international strategies of a group of four of these universities. The study analyses the accounts of expert practitioners in a variety of roles within the international teams of these universities to uncover the rationales, objectives and methodologies within these strategies. The study uses the theoretical lens of Resource-Based Theory (RBT) and the dynamic capabilities approach to analyse these expert accounts and to make sense of the why and how of the strategic international work being undertaken by these teams within their universities. The why question is addressed in this study through RBT and the findings indicate that the four universities in this study all seek the same set of key resources. The how question is subsequently addressed through the dynamic capabilities approach and thus the study examines how the international teams prioritise several capabilities which allow them to effectively pursue these resources. The dispersed nature of a university means that a great proportion of the time and energy is taken up setting up efficient and effective processes and other internally focussed activities. The study suggests that there is an imbalance between the resources sought and the capabilities developed with considerable bias to the setting up of reliable internal processes which distracts from the externally focussed mission. The complexity of the capabilities developed and the considerable timescales and resource investment involved in major international projects such as campuses help explain the ultimate distinctiveness of each university’s approach. The study is undertaken from a theoretically-informed practitioner perspective and is intended to be of use to practitioners in their own strategic deliberations.

Abstract:
In this series of essays about professional burnout, a veteran teacher seeks a way to continue her work and enthusiasm in it, for the sake of both her and her students. To that end, she explores her relationships with her father and mother, and how the practices of teaching and learning she brought from home have affected her present classroom experiences. A complicating factor is the presence of chronic illness and its demands both primary and secondary: her father's Alzheimer's, her mother's bi-polar disorder, and the demands of eldercare for her mother. She also explores her own habitual practice of being a student, in a reflective inquiry into the mind and situation of students from inside her own experiences. Interleaved vignettes of student interaction illustrate the kinds of difficulty that the speaker has with her teaching. They appear chronologically to suggest a developmental movement.

Zhang, Ge. "Incorporating Food-away-from-Home into the Thrifty Food Plan." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36201.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the impact of incorporating Food-away-from-Home (FAFH) into the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP). The new model of this study, FLEX, uses similar sets of datasets on prices, nutrition and average consumption pattern as those used in the TFP model. The 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data is used to generate average consumption and nutrient profiles. The relative price ratio of FAFH to FAH is assumed and fixed at 1.77. We compared nutrient intake, food intake and food expenditure amount across the FLEX, TFP, and the current low-income consumersâ consumption pattern. The overall finding is that moderate amount of FAFH can be a part of a balanced and nutritious diet and allowing FAFH as another food sources makes the diet recommendations relatively easier to follow. With the relative price assumption used in this study, considering FAFH does not make the diet plan unaffordable.

Abstract:
In a centrally located area in the city of Richmond, the youth hostel that I propose provides young people and backpackers a suitable place to stay while enjoying their journey in the historical city of Richmond. The youth hostel offers inexpensive overnight lodging and other amenities they can use for themselves such as self-serve kitchens, laundtry rooms, etc. Something that is worth mentioning, the youth hostel's site is also close by the Richmond Visitor Center. It can offer travelers some travel information or souvenir venue. Furthermore, with the distinguished site, there is another characteristic. That is, the building was built in 1963 and it represents the International Building Style. The Jackson Ward community primariry consists of tra-ditional architecture style buildings, such as Italianate and Second Empire styles. The building for this project is the only modern structure. This makes it stand out and give the impression of an emotionless institution. Therefore, there is no doubt that the International Style building holds a place in this community. So, how can the community embrace this site? How do the characteristics of Jackson Ward integrate with my building? And how can the archi-tectural style of this building relate better and warm up to the residents? By transforming the residential design elements in Jackson Ward Area, my endeavor is not only to create a welcoming youth hostel inside the building but also to introduce Richmond's history and famous spots to travelers. While more people visit the youth hostel, more people will know about Jackson Ward, and the city of Richmond.

Blick, Matthew. "An investigation into food-away-from-home consumption in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/46249.

Full text
Abstract:
The food-away-from-home (FAFH) sector in South Africa has continued to increase in popularity. This is illustrated by the increased presence of FAFH in the diets of the country’s citizens. However, the sector in South Africa remains un-researched with regard to understanding household preferences and the composition of consumer expenditure. This study analyses the effects of income and socio-demographic variables on FAFH expenditure for South Africa. These results will be useful to the foodservice sector and policy makers in order to identify potential customers, respond to current customers’ changing demands and develop marketing and operational strategies, and address important nutrition and health consequences, respectively. Data from Income and Expenditure Surveys (IESs) of 2005/2006 and 2010/2011 of StatsSA (Statistics South Africa) were used to estimate the responsiveness of household FAFH expenditure in South Africa to income and a number of socio-demographic variables. The IESs contain a large number of households with zero FAFH expenditure observations which means that the use of ordinary least squares (OLS) would result in biased and inconsistent results. Furthermore, omitting households with zero FAFH expenditure, and applying OLS reduces the sample size and consequently the efficiency of estimation. Previous studies made use of the univariate and multivariate an adjustment factor and a two-stage process where the second stage is a Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) Within-Group estimator. The majority of studies suggest that double-hurdle models are appropriate for applications where zero expenditure observations are due to abstention or economic factors. The double-hurdle model is more flexible than the tobit model because it allows for the possibility that zero and positive values are generated by different mechanisms. The model used assumes independence between the two hurdles. The first hurdle determines the probability of purchasing FAFH, while the second hurdle determines the amount spent on FAFH. The double-hurdle models estimated for the IESs of 2005/2006 and 2010/2011 illustrate that households headed by younger White females with a small household size and living in an urban settlement are most likely to purchase FAFH. However, households headed by younger White males with a small household size and living in an urban formal settlement are likely to have the highest expenditure on FAFH. An increase in income positively affects the decision to buy FAFH and the amount spent by participating households. The APE (average partial effect) was calculated for the income variable. The APE determines the probability of purchasing FAFH and the income elasticities (conditional and unconditional) of expenditure on FAFH by households. The estimated conditional income elasticity of expenditure is 0,27 and the unconditional income elasticity of expenditure is 0,611 for the IES of 2005/2006. While the estimated conditional income elasticity is 0,171 and the unconditional income elasticity is 0,472 for the IES of 2010/2011. The probability of purchasing FAFH is 0,0905 and 0,0568 for the IESs of 2005/2006 and 2010/2011 respectively. The income elasticity of expenditure on FAFH is inelastic and FAFH is a normal good for the average South African household. The small size of the participation elasticities mean that growth in the FAFH sector will be driven by households with existing expenditure. Future studies should focus on per capita FAFH expenditure, the effect of the lifestage of the individual, rather than age, on FAFH expenditure, FAFH expenditure for different meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and facility types (quick- and full-service restaurants) and the effect of income and socio-demographic factors on FAFH expenditure on different food types (for example beef, chicken, lamb, potatoes and salads).

Richardson, Rachel. "Home away from the home front : the British in the Balkans during the Great War." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2014. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/72/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a social history of the British in Serbia, Greece, and what is today Macedonia during the Great War. It explores British wartime experiences by examining their perception of national identity and their attitude towards other nationalities, their relationships and standards of propriety and appearance, aspects of everyday life including recreation, food and drink, the role that events played in forming a communal identity, reactions to and interactions with space and place in Salonika, and their motivations and perceptions of the worth of their work. British people on the Balkan front adapted to their wartime experiences and circumstances with the aid of their cultural background and priorities, existing connections and relationships, their interpretation of their environments, and their sense of duty and accomplishments. Rather than considering or acting as though their wartime experiences were a deviation from their prewar lives, Britons actively integrated these experiences into their everyday lives, and furthermore relied upon their prewar perceptions, connections, and understanding in order to make sense of their wartime lives.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the experiences of retirement village residents as they move from an independent to a supported living environment within a retirement village. It focuses on residents’ perceptions of their transitions and adopts a qualitative approach to understand the nature of their transitions and the way in which they are experienced. A grounded theory framework is used in order to capture the meanings that participants apply to concepts such as home, and to the physical, social, personal and veiled spaces in which they live. The findings from the study reveal that as residents’ health fails, the impact of increasing dependence is such that their sense of social and personal autonomy is gradually eroded. The research also provides insights into residents’ expectations and fears surrounding end of life. In many ways the experiences of the residents in supported living environments do not differ greatly from those of residents in any aged care facility. One major finding of this research, however, is the debilitating impact on well-being that occurs as a consequence of these transitions from independent to supported living, taking place within one physical location – the retirement village – a physical space which promises prospective residents the opportunity for active and positive ageing.

Rosenman, Emily. "The road away from home : policy and power in post-Katrina New Orleans." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/38039.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I explore several intersections of hurricane recovery, urban planning, housing assistance, and neighborhood organizing in post-Katrina New Orleans. These intersections include the mobilization of particular kinds of evidence in redevelopment planning, the construction of “community” and “neighborhood” in the aftermath of disaster, and the changing geographical scale of community development in a post-disaster environment. Hurricane Katrina has inspired a huge amount of research; much of which has been written from either a policy or hazards/disaster perspective. I argue in Chapter 2 that the disaster literature on Hurricane Katrina can benefit from engagement with literature on urban governance and the politics of civic engagement. Similarly, I propose in Chapter 3 that economic analyses of pre-and post-Katrina data must be contextualized by the post-Katrina politics and social realities of New Orleans. In this chapter, I explore the effects of depoliticizing the issue of affordable housing in New Orleans. In engendering public uncertainty about the reliability of housing data, powerful landlords and politicians avoided a debate on housing access and instead focused legislative attention on a seemingly counterintuitive question: is there too much affordable housing in New Orleans? In this chapter, I find that a preoccupation with questions about the accuracy of housing data became a tool to shut down political debate and to present subsidized housing as a nuisance to New Orleans neighborhoods and, more threateningly, to the city’s housing market as a whole. Through in-depth interviews and observations of public meetings, Chapter 4 explores neighborhood-scale participation in the governance of post-Katrina New Orleans. In this chapter I analyze the manifestations of civic involvement in three hurricane-damaged neighborhoods and find that civic participation inside or outside of formal political structures yields different results for New Orleans’ neighborhoods, and that some avenues of participation are more easily visible than others. Finally, this thesis concludes with some reflections on persisting inequalities in the post-hurricane recovery process and the New Orleans’ upcoming plans to standardize neighborhood participation in urban planning.

Ghotbi, Sina. "Health implications of food away from home consumption : a marketing and policy analysis." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/55984.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides two independent empirical quantitative studies on consumer decision-making in the context of food-away-from-home consumption, and examines important public policy and marketing issues. We first study whether meals with diet carbonated soft drinks (CSD) have more calories than meals with regular CSD by investigating an individual-level meal consumption panel dataset between 2000 and 2007 at a major fast-food chain in Canada. This study is motivated by the debate on the effectiveness of diet CSD on weight loss and is the first to provide field-based evidence, supported by within subject variation, on the harm and benefit of diet drinks in terms of caloric consumption within a meal. We find no increase in total calories consumed during a meal, and most diet CSD drinkers also exhibit a reduction in total calories. Looking more narrowly at the food calories in a meal we find that young males are the only group who have more food calories when they choose a diet drink, yet the extra food calories do not exceed the calories saved by consuming diet rather than regular CSD. In the second study, using an individual-level panel dataset on food consumed in all restaurants in Canada, we examine the effect of media coverage of multiple instances of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE – mad cow disease) on the decision to dine out and, once in a restaurant, whether to order beef. We find that when media coverage of BSE crises is high, people eat out less often, decrease the number of beef orders when eating out, and increase the ordering of other products. Interestingly, we find that these effects only hold for well-known, national chain restaurants and not for local restaurants. We develop and implement a modified double-hurdle model that explicitly takes into account participation (i.e., dine out) and consumption (e.g., number of beef orders) information in estimation of the model. This work extends the product harm crises literature to the case of industry level crises and the context of restaurants. The thesis concludes with a brief chapter on limitations and extensions of the research.

Abstract:
Eating away from home has been identified as one possible contributor to childhood obesity, with links to poor diet quality and higher weight status due to dietary quality of meals at restaurants and consumersâ attitudes. Parenting style has been associated with childrenâ s weight status and overall attitudes toward food, with authoritative parenting being shown to help protect against childhood obesity. The current study aimed to compare and contrast parenting and feeding practices at home and in the restaurant. Twenty-five mothers with children, ages five to eight, who ate at restaurants at least two times per week participated in facilitated, individual interviews. Interviews topics included: parenting, child input in choosing restaurants and restaurant meal selection, and food rules and practices at restaurants versus at home. Socio-demographic information, parenting style, and the mothersâ heights and weights were gathered, with descriptive statistics computed. Interview data were transcribed, then thematically coded using NVivo software. All mothers scored highest on authoritative parenting styles. Participating mothers were Caucasian, well-educated, with above-average family incomes. Mothers had an average of 2.2 children and a BMI of 27.9 kg/m2. Mothers described more stringent behavioral expectations and more permissive food rules at restaurants. Parents had greater influence in determining whether to eat away from home and where, whereas children had greater responsibility for meal selections at restaurants. The results suggest that practices may differ at restaurants than at home, highlighting the importance of further research, along with educational and behavioral strategies directed toward mothers when eating away from home.

Abstract:
China has experienced dramatic changes in food industry in the last three decades, with demographics changed substantially as well. Households are becoming smaller and are expected to age soon. Overweight and obesity have become serious problems at all ages and are worsening rapidly. All these demographic changes are closely related to food consumption and are going to play a vital role on the future of food industry, especially Food-away-from-home (FAFH) consumption. This study intends to analyze food away from home consumption in urban China with respect to household composition and income first, and then examine the influences of dining location away from home on adult obesity. Findings indicate that household composition has significant effects on FAFH participation and expenditure, and different age groups have different influences. Cafeteria is the most often place urban Chinese have meals at and such meals increase the likelihood of consumers being overweight and obese.

Abstract:
This dissertation looks into the lives and experiences of early Taiwanese Canadians in Vancouver (1960s-1980s). The focus is particularly placed on how transnational migration experience has impacts on their self-image, national identity, and behaviours in the public sphere. An ethnographic research approach is taken to collect data of life histories through interviews, group interviews, and participatory observations in the community. It is found that early Taiwanese immigrants underwent enormous political pressure from their sending country. And this has in turn made Taiwanese immigrant community show a high degree of group solidarity and signs of radicalization over issues of identity politics. It is argued that the transnational social setting in the host society has engendered the chance for a reflexive examination of one’s national identity through interaction with the host society, the sending society, and other ethnic groups. And in particular it is also argued that the experience and the responding actions have led Taiwanese immigrants to proactively participate in public affairs. Theoretically the research broadens the understanding of conditions of nationalism by proposing a perspective giving transnational factors more weight in providing a framework for analysing complex phenomena of nation and nationhood in a rapidly transforming world.

The participants were a group of elite Libyan women who lived with their husbands and children in North Manchester were the focus of the study. The focus of the study was centred on showing how these Libyan women used home computing and the internet as a social tool. A qualitative research methodology was utilised in this study. The data consisted of exploratory semi-structured interviews with a Libyan mother and her daughter, and a series of group discussions collected from Al Lamma gatherings (women's social gatherings) which were attended by Libyan women of different backgrounds. The use of Al Lamma gatherings provided a culturally appropriate setting in which the women were able to express their views more freely than might have been the case in more traditional research settings such as group interviews or focus groups. The women's group discussion transcripts were translated from spoken Libyan Arabic into English. Participant- observation field notes, reflective extracts and diary notes were also part of the research data. The analysis of the interviews and the women's group discussions revealed important issues as a result of using home computing and the internet as a social activity. Home computing was used as a vehicle for informal learning and self-development. However the women found it necessary to overcome various barriers and obstacles to their access to home computing. For instance, conflict and power relations in Libyan families in North Manchester were reflected in members' access to and use of home computers, prompting strategies such as passive resistance by the women in order to secure access to home computing and the social and leisure goods that it offers. As a result, it is suggested, home computing contributed to the empowerment of the Libyan women participants. Culture and religion also had influences on family structures, and therefore upon practices around home computing and intemet use. Further issues discussed in the study included the role of home computing in sustaining real and 'imagined' community, and the significance of engaging with virtual realities for children's development. The thesis also addressed issues related to the role of the English language in creating hierarchies of knowledge and power among researchers. The thesis identifies a need for educators and policy makers to recognize the existence of middle class migrants who have diversity of needs and identities. It is suggested that the engagement with home computing by such migrant groups could have implications for classroom teaching or designing effective courses online. The thesis identifies a need for further research on education, employment and empowerment in relation to middle class immigrant women from under-represented groups in the United Kingdom. The experience of children of immigrant families or transnational families is also identified as a topic for future research. Finally, the thesis recommends enhancing an appreciation of differences by teaching about different social arrangements and cultures in the English education system.

King, Julia Rebecca Louise. "The impact of relational trauma on children and foster carers of children who are looked after away from home." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25736.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Maltreated children, including those who are looked after away from home, are amongst the most vulnerable members of society. Due to the relational trauma that most looked after children have experienced they are at increased risk of attachment and mental health difficulties, which can impede their ability to form close relationships with new carers. Indeed, many such children behave in ways that fail to elicit caregiving or even as if they do not need caregivers, and providing sensitive, therapeutic care to these vulnerable children can be a considerable challenge. Aims: The aims of this thesis were threefold: to review the impact of maltreatment experiences on children’s executive functioning, to investigate the prevalence of attachment and trauma-related difficulties in children in foster care, and their impact on the parenting task of foster carers. Methods: Aims are addressed in two journal articles. To address the first aim, a systematic review of research regarding the association between maltreatment and executive function in children and adolescents is presented in journal article one. Subsequent aims are addressed in journal article two, a cross-sectional study with foster carers of children in care aged 3-12 years who completed self-report measures investigating the emotional, behavioural, attachment and trauma related difficulties of their foster child, the perceived quality of the relationship, and levels of parenting stress and sense of competence. Results: The systematic review revealed that the majority of studies demonstrated a significant impairment in one or more areas of executive ability in maltreated children, with particular support for impairments in inhibitory control, executive working memory and decision making. However, there was only limited support for impairments in cognitive flexibility, planning/problem solving, and fluency. Furthermore, there was considerable variability between studies in the specific deficits reported. Results from the empirical study highlight the prevalence of attachment and trauma-related difficulties in children in foster care. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that levels of foster carer-rated inhibited attachment behaviour was a significant predictor of quality of the foster carer-child relationship and parenting stress. The level of emotional and behavioural difficulties also emerged as a significant predictor of quality of the foster carer-child relationship, and parenting sense of competence. Conclusions: This thesis highlights the pervasive impact of relational trauma on children. Results of the systematic review indicate its impact on children’s executive ability. The empirical study reveals the high prevalence of attachment and trauma-related difficulties in children in foster care, and provides insight into factors related to quality of the foster carer-child relationship, and the stress and sense of competence of foster carers. Implications for interventions and service provision regarding maltreated children who become looked after away from home, and their carers, are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to explore the key care factors that influence the educational achievement of children looked after at home and away from home in Scotland. Traditionally there has been less research conducted in Scotland than in the rest of the United Kingdom. The research analysed a large new sample - one fifth of the care leaving population in Scotland - and spans a five year period. The thesis makes an original research contribution. A unique features of the research is that it investigates the experiences of children looked after at home, alongside those looked after away from home. In addition, the research involved two large local authority areas in Scotland that had not previously participated in such research on looked after children. What emerged from the research was that the Corporate Parent (local authorities and partner agencies) had not yet successfully prioritised the educational achievement of looked after children in policy and practice, despite education being identified by the government as a mechanism for combating social exclusion. The key findings of the research demonstrated that looked after children perform less well academically than the general school population. In particular, placement type, the reason for becoming looked after and the age on becoming looked after were significant factors in determining educational achievement. Other factors such as gender and number of placements were also found to be associated with educational achievement. Empirical results further indicated that looked after children suffered from discrimination and social exclusion in all aspects of their lives, including school and where they lived. This was a significant finding as the disadvantage experienced by many looked after children continues to impact on their lives into adulthood, making them some of the most socially excluded adults in Scotland and the United Kingdom today.

Abstract:
Up to 50% of young people in the UK attend university on leaving school (Adams, 2013). Although different aspects of this transition have been examined empirically, little attention has been paid to how young people experience it, despite the finding that almost 30% of students exhibit clinical levels of distress during their time at university (Kerr, 2013). The present study used qualitative methods to explore how individuals make sense of their experience of the transition to university. Ten undergraduate students (7 women, 3 men) were interviewed, and their responses analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA; Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009). IP A seeks to provide a psychological interpretation of participants' experiences and identify commonalities between different accounts, whilst remaining grounded in the ideo graphic experiences of individuals. Four super-ordinate themes were produced for men, and four for women. Four whole-group themes were also produced. All participants talked about establishing a secure base at university, finding a secure base in new friendships at university, development and personal growth, and coming to terms with the reality of university life. These applied to both men and women, but men emphasised the importance of personal growth and shaping their self-development, whilst women prioritised developing a sound social platform. A discussion of these themes in relation to extant literature is then presented, followed by a critique of the present study. Recommendations for further research are also made, and implications for policy and practice are explored. The importance of expanding this area of study is also emphasised.

Abstract:

The achievement gap in American schools between middle class students and students from poverty is well documented. This paper outlines the findings of a study designed to explore the experience and conscientization of struggling students from poverty. The argument will be made that poverty can be viewed as a culture and that this view may shed significant light on the dynamics of the achievement gap. Further, using the construct of poverty as a culture provides real life applications that have the potential to impact the achievement gap. The study explored the lived experiences in a public school setting of intermediate students from poverty, hoping to capture their voice and insights. The research utilized a Critical Pedagogical Approach to attempt to understand why American schools struggle with these populations and what could be done to address the achievement gap.

Abstract:

Research regarding homeschooled students and their transition to college has been focused on two distinct areas: their academic performance and success integrating into a university community. The purpose of this study was to analyze the transition experiences of students who were homeschooled prior to attendance at a residential university campus compared to students who were conventionally educated and attending the same university. My research uses a sociological framework and a qualitative comparative research design to focus on the ability of students from different educational backgrounds to garner social capital, network with peers, manage "rite of passage" experiences (such as dating and exposure to substance use) and nurture friendships. I interviewed 50 students: 25 students who had been homeschooled prior to college entrance and 25 conventionally educated students who attended the same university. Interview data were supplemented by focus group data from 13 homeschooled students. Using social capital, socialization, college student adjustment as theoretical frameworks, my findings challenge assumptions that homeschooled students' lack of formal school-related social exposure prior to attending college typically leads to adjustment problems in the university environment. There were some differences in assimilation experiences and the strategies used in the transition when comparing homeschooled versus conventionally educated students. However, the homeschooled students who transitioned to the university environment were socially engaged with others, both in the residential community and in co-curricular activities, on par with their conventionally educated peers. My findings suggest that, despite receiving their earlier education outside of formal settings that characterize conventional education, many homeschooled students have the skill development, social exposure and capacity to transition successfully to a residential university setting. Homeschooled students' ability to develop social capital, nurture social networks and assimilate into a collective community challenges the position of homeschooling opponents, who assume negative impacts due to insular relationships, lack of routine experience with age peers and limited access to conventional social opportunities. These empirical findings have implications for sociological research, homeschooling families, and critics and proponents of home-based education.

Abstract:
A growing number of home-schooled students enter the nation's colleges and universities each year. Tinto (1988, 1993) presented a foundational model of how students transition from high school to college. In this model, students travel through three stages: separation, transition, and incorporation. Few studies have examined the transitional issues home-school students encounter as they begin their first year of college. This study, at a midsized public university in the Midwest, examined the transitional issues experienced by first-year college students who graduated from high school in a home-school setting. It specifically sought to determine if the issues experienced by the students were related to Tinto's theory of student departure. The study was qualitative in nature. Data were gathered through interviews with first-year students who matriculated in fall 2005 and persisted to spring 2006. The interviews were held in February and March 2006. Data was analyzed based on guidelines presented by Berkowitz (1997) and themes were discovered. The researcher concluded that there was little distinction between the transitional issues experienced by home-schooled students, and those experienced by traditionally educated students. Students experienced a wide range of transitional issues during their first year of college such as loneliness, meeting others with different values, living in the residence halls, and dealing with greater independence. The transitional issues the participants encountered during their first year of college were closely related to Tinto's (1993) theory of transition. The resources offered by the university, such as orientation, RAs, and campus programming, were influential in the home-schooled students' transition to college.

Abstract:
The aim with this study was to give awareness about the school situation for students living in the slum areas of Nairobi. The purpose was to raise the teachers’ perspectives about working with these students. Previous researches around the topic were studied to gain a better knowledge for the subject. The focus was put on Maslow’s hierarchy of basic needs, trauma with its effects and possible treatments in school and the home environment effects on the student´s learning. Since this was a qualitative study, the method used was open aimed interviews. Eleven teachers working in the slum areas in Nairobi were interviewed with these two main questions in mind; What do teachers think is important when working with students who come from the slum areas of Nairobi and how do teachers work with these students? All schools were located in or close to a children home in order for the teachers to have a wide range of experiences when working with students from the slum area. Some of the results that came up were that teachers saw it as important to provide students with their basic needs in school. The teachers also said that students had different reactions towards trauma and it was of great importance for students to be able to both channel their expressions after the trauma but also to forget the trauma for the moment to be able to concentrate in school. The teachers were disagreeing about whether to treat students equally or individually. Some of the teachers said that the student´s home environment affects their learning due to the quality and quantity of help that they can get with their homework. Some teachers felt adequate due to the extra work put on their shoulders in their work with the students from the slum areas.

Abstract:
This study examines the determinants of a household’s threshold price for a restaurant meal cost increase; the level of cost increase that would cause households to either eat in restaurants less frequently or change what they would typically purchase. The design of the study is formulated using a Tobit model to examine the threshold price by differing social, economic and demographic characteristics of households in Kentucky as well as their preferences for restaurant-specific characteristics. The empirical estimates suggest that households that frequently have dinner at restaurants, households with higher incomes and households that strongly prefer full-service restaurants have a positive threshold price-range; which suggests that such households are more willing to pay an additional cost increase in restaurant meals. Conversely, households that always notice taxes before paying their checks, households close to retirement-age, and households that do not strongly prefer local-food restaurants have negative threshold price-range and are consequently less willing to pay an additional cost increase in restaurant meals.

Abstract:
Background. Diet is considered by the World Health Organization a major modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases, emphasizing the importance of understanding the feeding habits and their determinants in the current epidemiological scenario. However little is known about the nutritional characteristics and the characteristics of users of food away from home. O bjective. To investigate the nutritional quality of food away from home and their relationship to social, demographic and lifestyle. Methods. Crosssectional study, a population-based, through a household survey with a sample of 232 adolescents (12-19 years), 602 adults and elderly (20 years or more) of both sexes. Dietary intake was measured by application of 24hR by phone. The overall dietary quality was assessed by the Brazilian Healthy Eating Index Revised (B-HEIR) and the Meal Quality Index (MQI) was used to evaluate dietary quality of the main meals. The association between the B-HEIR and the MQI was assessed by linear regression analysis. The proportion of people that consumed meals away from home and its association with the social, demographic and lifestyle were analyzed by Poisson regression with robust variance. Results. Among the 834 respondents, 32 per cent had at least one meal away from home. The average energy consumption per meal away from home was 628 kcal (sd 101kcal), about 35 per cent of the average daily consumption reported in this population. Statistically significant associations were found between food consumption away from home and overweight. It was observed the presence of both food markers of a healthy diet, such as rice and beans as food components of a unhealthy diet as soft drinks, snacks, sandwiches and pizzas. The average MQI score of lunch consumed away from home was lower than lunch at home, with higher amounts of total and saturated fats. Have lunch away from home was associated with the MQI score. Conclusion. Our findings suggest that eating meals away from home can contribute as a modifiable risk factor for chronic diseases, with higher levels of total and saturated fat. However, the meals consumed at home also need improvement

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study examined the role of guilt among Latino first generation college students and their educational journey as they leave their family and community to pursue higher education. For first generation college students, going to college is breaking away from the norm of not going to college, which for many family members who have no college experience, they cannot understand the reason why their loved one is separating themselves from their close nit family and community. This notion of leaving their family and community behind can elicit feelings of guilt for not being physically available due to distance or the demands of being a college student. This study looked at the lived experience of six participants and their feelings of guilt. The conceptual framework used was a combination of Critical Race Theory and Survivor Guilt to fully understand the stories of the six participants. This qualitative study used was a narrative design to fully understand the lived experiences.

The findings revealed that guilt was caused when the participants put their needs before the needs of their family and attended college. Another significant finding was that for the females in the study, they all stated that guilt was brought on due to the physical distance between them and their families. As for the males who left home to go to college, they felt financially guilty for either causing financial problems at home or not being able to support their family with the bills. This study is intended to bring forth the guilt that Latino first generation college students face from leaving home and how colleges should be aware. This study also address recommendations for policy and practice that can better support Latino first generation college students and their families at home and in a college setting.

This research has as its object the relations established among individuals who do not know each other at restaurants in the central area of Uberlândia - MG. It was carried out from the perspective of the study of everyday life as a way to perceive the experiences of the common man in the processes of societal change. We conducted a case study through observations and interviews in which we seek to apprehend the representations of the patrons of establishments that have a particular feature, almost mandatory, that their clients share a table. From the theoretical references which allow considering food as a means for the analysis of social relations; the construction of rules of behavior in society; eating out and the changes of the interactions in public space, we analyze how the definitions of behaviors considered appropriate for the occasion affect relations among strangers in the restaurant area. We could see that the behavior shared by clients have the effect of dismissing the strangers, through rules that guide people\'s attitudes so as not to disrespect others.

The main consumption of young people are food and drink, they were easily affected by their peer. According to a report of National Statistics, students are the majority in consumption of food away-from-home. Recently, the research of conformity were only concerned in stocks. There were few studies in food away-from-home of college students. The main subject in this paper is the effects on conformity for purchasing decision of food away-from-home of college students. Based on consumer conformity in Lascu & Zinkhan (1995), the theoretical structure of this study was considered in the point of view of consumer conformity. We discuss the personal characteristics、group characteristics 、brand characteristics and task/situation characteristics, and explore how they affect the conformity and the influence of purchasing decision. From the results of Multiple Regression Analysis, the influence of 「group characteristics 」on「conformity 」was the most powerful, and others are 「situation characteristics 」、 「personal characteristics」、 「brand characteristics 」 in turn. The purchasing decision influenced by conformity is obvious. Hence, from the Multiple Regression Analysis of 「four factors that influence conformity」, we concluded that the influence of 「group characteristics 」on 「purchasing 」 was the most important, and others were 「situation characteristics 」、「brand characteristics 」 in turn.
