Abstract:
The Seventh-day Adventist Church, a biblically conservative, Arminian, evangelical, Protestant denomination with roots in the Second Great Awakening of early nineteenth-century America, illustrates the shifting positions within American evangelicalism toward conservative readings of the Bible, and the impact of those readings on social engagement. Adventist leaders began with a moderate, thought-inspiration view of scripture and held to socially progressive views on race and gender. In the 1920s, the church shifted toward a more fundamentalist, verbal inerrancy approach to scripture, and they also shifted to conservative positions on issues of race and women’s involvement in ministry and leadership. Toward the end of the century, the influence of overseas missions began to temper the left‒right divide in the Western church, as conservative, but not fundamentalist, views from overseas became more influential, and social outlooks also became more progressive.

Abstract:
Hasidism, a movement of religious awakening and social reform, originated in the mid-eighteenth century. After two and a half centuries of crisis, upheaval, and renewal, it remains a vibrant way of life and a compelling aspect of Jewish experience. This book explores the profound intellectual and religious issues that the hasidic masters raised in their Torah commentary, and brings to the fore the living qualities of their sermons (derashot). The book addresses a spectrum of topics: creation, revelation, and redemption; hermeneutics, epistemology, psychology, Romanticism, poetry and poetics, art history, Hebrew fiction, cultural history, and tropes of Jewish suffering and hope. Fully engaged in the texts and their spirituality, the author brings them to bear on postmodernist challenges to traditional spiritual and religious sensibilities. The study uses the full range of critical scholarship on Hasidism as a social and ideological movement. At the same time, it maintains a strong focus on hasidic Torah commentary as a conveyor of theology and value. Each of its chapters presents a fundamentally new approach. The translations are in themselves an innovative moment in the tradition and spiritual history of the passages that the book offers.

Abstract:
Ethics in Zen feature core components of broader Buddhist ethics: precepts, monastic codes, compassion, skill in means, and the bodhisattva ideal. Zen approaches to practice and awakening as well as such influences as Confucianism have coloured how Zen thinkers in East Asia have interpreted and practised these components. As a result, such constructs as the Five Precepts play a role in traditional Zen that differs from how they have functioned in other strands of Buddhism. Recently, in response to war, gender discrimination, and environmental degradation, Zen thinkers have been reinterpreting such constructs, often in ways that diverge from traditional Zen.

Fernandes, Valdir, and Arlindo Philippi Jr. Sustainability Sciences. Edited by Robert Frodeman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198733522.013.30.

Abstract:
The concept of sustainability refers to the human awakening about the finite nature of natural resources. Occurring as a political and social process, sustainability placed on development agendas the discussion about the limitations on the biosphere to sustain economic growth; access to basic conditions of universal healthcare and education; and the threat posed to ancient cultural traditions. This process led to the creation of an interdisciplinary research field with transdisciplinary impacts. This chapter, “Sustainability Sciences: Political and Epistemological Approaches,” discusses the challenges of knowledge production in this field as well as its historical development alongside environmental and political issues. The discussion is established from the historical development of environmental issues and the international political movement that culminated in the perspective of sustainability; of the evolution of sustainability as a scientific research field; and finally from the political and epistemological aspects that shape the sustainability sciences.

Abstract:
Birdwatching in Britain has grown increasingly dependent on burning fossil fuels. Regularly driving long distances to birding hotspots and frequent flying to see exotic species are seen as perfectly normal. In the face of the climate crisis, however, a growing number of birders are reassessing the way they enjoy and study birds. In this timely book, 30 contributors—from young birdwatchers to professional ornithologists—explain why and how they are shifting to climate-friendlier approaches. Low-carbon birding, they argue, is a legitimate and valuable way of enjoying birds. Furthermore, in itself this can bring many joys, some of them unexpected. From first encounters with hawfinches to focusing in on birdsong, from the Kalahari to the Hebrides, the stories told here are not about heroic efforts to save the planet. They are simply accounts of everyday humanity in unprecedented times—ordinary people with doubts and concerns about how to live a decent life and act responsibly in a rapidly warming world. The authenticity of their voices is a testament to the moment of awakening to the climate crisis in British ornithology. Above all, Low-Carbon Birding is an urgent call for birders to leave a better legacy in the skies and across the living world.
