Abstract Date Presented 04/03/2022 OTs often address handwriting difficulties. Primitive reflex retention may interfere with handwriting development. In a cross-sectional study, we explored a possible relationship between reflex retention and handwriting difficulties among 74 children ages 7-9 years. We found that more children with handwriting difficulties had reflex retention, and reflex retention was associated with handwriting ability, after controlling for vision, implying a likely need to address reflex integration. Abstract:
We report results of an Internet experiment designed to test the theory of informational cascades in financial markets (Christopher Avery and Peter Zemsky, 1998). More than 6,400 subjects, including a subsample of 267 consultants from an international consulting firm, participated in the experiment. We find that the presence of a flexible market price prevents herding. The presence of contrarian behavior distorts prices, however, and even after 20 decisions, convergence to the fundamental value is rare. We also report some interesting differences with respect to subjects' fields of study. Reassuringly, the behavior of the consultants turns out to be not significantly different from that of the remaining subjects.

Abstract:
This article explores the Nobel Prize for Literature as an embodiment of Western hegemony, despite its universal disposition. It demonstrates that the award is prestigious and canonises selected literary works as quintessential, as well as offering social and economic benefits to authors. However, the article contends that there are ideological and geopolitical considerations apart from quality that are addressed by the Swedish Academy to identify the winner every year, chief among them being the language of writing. The article demonstrates that literary works that are apt to win are generally those that are written in the dominant languages of the metropolis, especially English. It further cast doubts on the chances of winning for writers who use marginal languages, for example, African national languages, considering that even translations tend to misrepresent texts in the source language. The article avers that the Nobel Prize epitomises hegemony, language being a key component. Using postcolonial theory, the article further lays bare how writers use marginal languages to mediate with linguistic hegemony through appropriation, abrogation and evolution of argots. The article asserts that the Swedish Academy needs to rethink the question of language in awarding the Nobel Prize for Literature or else it can become displaced and parochialised as users of minor languages negotiate with it.

First of all, I would like to express gratitude on behalf of academician Eugeni I. Chazov, who was kindly invited by Professor Safar to attend this Congress. Unfortunately, some circumstances connected with work prevented Dr. Chazov's attending. Most of you are probably informed about his attitude toward the movement known as Physicians for Nuclear Disarmament. In 1981, Dr. Chazov delivered his paper at the First Congress of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), held in Airlie, Virginia, USA. The Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR has established a special Council to help guide this disaster prevention movement among Soviet physicians. Academician Chazov is the chairman of this Council. In May 1981, our central newspaper,Pravda, published an appeal to the scientists of the world, signed by many prominent Soviet scientists, Lenin and State Prize winners of the USSR, and Nobel Prize winners, calling upon their colleagues and urging all scientific workers to do everything possible to avert the danger of nuclear war. Professor Chazov was among those who signed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This book offers a revealing picture of the myths and realities of the energy world by one of our most renowned energy experts and managers. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the human race finds itself caught in an "energy trap." Carbon-rich fossil fuels—coal, petroleum and natural gas—are firmly entrenched as the dominant sources of our energy and power. Their highly concentrated forms, versatility of use, ease of transport and storage, ready availability, and comparatively low costs combine to give fossil fuels an unassailable competitive advantage over all alternative sources of energy. This economic reality means that fossil fuels will inevitably continue to be the backbone of the global economy for the next quarter of a century, even while the adverse climate and environmental effects of our dependence on fossil fuels hurtle toward global crisis levels. To avert unacceptable environmental consequences, the world must deliberately and incrementally supplant fossil fuels with alternative energy sources, on a schedule that will have them overtake fossil fuels in the world's energy budget by 2035. To achieve this urgent goal without massive economic dislocation and reduction in standards of living, global investment in fossil fuel efficiency will be just as important as the development and massive deployment of alternative energy technologies and delivery systems. In this eagerly awaited sequel to his prize-winning bestseller, The Age of Oil, Leonardo Maugeri, the strategy director of one of the world's biggest energy companies, puts forward a hard-headed, concrete plan in simple everyday language for how to shift the world economy's primary energy dependence from fossil fuels to renewable energies by 2035. Assuming no specialized knowledge, the author walks the reader chapter by chapter through each of the fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas) and each of the alternative energy sources (nuclear, hydroelectric, biofuel, wind, solar, geothermal, and hydrogen). Drawing on the unparalleled data and analysis resources at his command, Maugeri assesses the problems and advantages of each energy source in turn in order to constrain the optimal mix of energy sources that the world should be aiming for in 2035. Critically, he lays out the arduous path for getting from here to there. Maugeri shows that the next 25 years will be a rocky marriage between the old and the new energy paradigms, during which we must dramatically improve the efficiency of our continuing use of fossil fuels, while driving ahead on all fronts to an energy future based on a suite of sustainable energy sources.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides conservative estimates of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of tobacco-control policies. Using a model of the cohort of smokers alive in 1995, we find that tax increases that would raise the real price of cigarettes by 10°/o worldwide would cause about 42 million of these smokers to quit. This price increase would prevent a minimum of 10 million tobacco-related deaths. A combined set of non-price measures (such as comprehensive bans on advertising and promotion, bans on smoking in public places, prominent warning labels, and mass information) would cause some 23 million smokers alive in 1995 to quit and would prevent S million deaths. The non-price measures are assumed to have an effectiveness of 2% —a conservative assumption. Increased use of nicotine-replacement therapies (NRTs), with an assumed effectiveness of 0.5%, would enable some 6 million smokers alive in 1995 to quit and would avert 1 million deaths.

Abstract:
Abstract The criminal justice system dispenses justice by apprehending, prosecuting, and punishing lawbreakers. These activities also prevent crime by two mechanisms, deterrence and incapacitation. Would-be lawbreakers may be deterred from committing crimes by the knowledge that their crime may result in their arrest, prosecution, and sentencing. Thus, deterrence depends on some would-be lawbreakers concluding that the price of crime is prohibitive. The criminal justice system may also avert crime by a nonbehavioral mechanism: the incapacitation of convicted offenders who are incarcerated in jail or prison. During their period of incarceration they are physically restrained from committing crimes against the society at large.

Abstract:
To reduce potential exposure to economic fluctuations and dependence on extra-territorial energy sources, some European Union (EU) member states are exploring energy diversification as a path to energy independence, economic vitality and national security. Nuclear power is a leading alternative energy source which may enable the EU to weather and potentially avert energy insecurity crises, including ones arising out of or related to political crises, collective action by oil-producing nations, global oil demand, and oil price fluctuations. Although nuclear power may be a long-term energy solution, the risks and cost trajectories deter many EU member states from nuclear power plant construction due to operation, maintenance and security costs. This chapter considers some key costs and potential options to reduce costs.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 focuses on the diplomatic role Mary played during the first eighteen months of the Great Eastern Crisis. Sparked by internal unrest in the Ottoman Empire, this major diplomatic event engulfed European politics during the years 1875–1878. The chapter places Mary within this international narrative and considers her role as ‘diplomat’. It reveals the reality of her political and diplomatic activities at the centre of the British Government and it explores Mary’s specific forms of influence: acting as an intermediary between the Foreign Office, the Prime Minister, and her contacts inside the Ottoman Empire; offering diplomatic advice to the cabinet; instructing the British representatives in Constantinople; and working closely with the Russian Ambassador to avert an Anglo-Russian conflict. In uncovering these activities and placing them within a wider international narrative, this chapter represents a critical intervention in the history of female diplomatic activity.

Abstract:
Transformation on the scale needed to avert climate catastrophe can now only be revolutionary. A tragic understanding of realistic hope helps us to see how various current approaches will not be revolutionary enough. Deep Adaptation talks of ‘bouncing back’, within broadly our present value-system, from disaster – whereas we are going to need the existential resilience to live through tragic value-reconfigurations. The Green New Deal gives too many hostages to the contestability of the concept of justice and remains firmly attached to a win-win agenda of democratic change by consent. Extinction Rebellion places far too great a burden on largely untried citizen deliberation in pursuit of a caucus-revolution in which everyone gets prizes and no-one gets hurt. The inadequacies of these approaches help us to appreciate what revolutionary action in the spirit of a tragic vision must involve – that is, changing a literally intolerable system at whatever cost.
