Abstract:
Kuntouttavan työtoiminnan pitkäaikaistyöttömiä palveleva luonne on paikoin hämärtynyt.

Abstract:
The precopulatory behaviour patterns of two species of hermit crab found in Australian waters are described. In Clibanarius virescens, males rotate the female's shell about an axis perpendicular to the female's shell aperture axis while holding the shell with their ambulatory legs. in Diogenes avarus, males hold the female's shell with their minor cheliped in an unusual orientation in which the female's shell aperture is facing away from the male. In D. avarus, both field and laboratory observations indicate that males in longer-spired shells such as Cerithium spp. are apparently at a disadvantage during precopulatory behaviour and obtain fewer matings than males in shorter-spired shells.

Abstract:
A redescription of adult and larval stages of diogenid hermit crab Diogenes nitidimanus Terao, 1913 is presented. Morphological similarities suggest that D. nitidimanus is allied to D. avarus Heller, 1865, D. granulatus Miers, 1880, D. ovatus Miers, 1881, D. pugilator (Roux, 1838) and D. rectimanus Miers, 1884. Diogenes nitidimanus can be distinguished from the latter four species by different armature or ornamentation of the left chela and/or the shape of the ambulatory dactyli. Zoeal and megalopal stages of this species are described from laboratory-reared material hatched from parental individuals collected from Peter the Great Bay, Russian Far East. Larval development in the Russian population is compared with that described for a population of this species from southern Japan. The developmental morphology between the two populations is generally similar, but some minor differences, which might be attributable to variability, are found. Larvae of D. nitidimanus are morphologically closest to those of D. avarus among eight species of Diogenes for which larval descriptions are available.

Abstract:

Abstract This contribution will look at the impact that the discovery of the site of Tell el-Dabʿa (Avaris), the capital of the Hyksos, has had on the discipline of Egyptology—in other words, to assess in what ways the disciplinary and public narrative about the Hyksos Period has (or has not) changed as a consequence of the discovery of Avaris.1 It will become clear that the cultural specifics of Avaris and its historical place have had a varied reception, and that the diverging representations that can be encountered pay tribute to different strategies of acceptance or denial that perpetuate certain traditions of scholarly and public engagement with ancient Egypt.

Abstract:
The paper treats expressions in which Manetho’s narrative about the Hyksos period, known in literal quotation and detailed retelling by Josephus, describes the actors of power in Egypt at different phases of this period. On the eve of Hyksos invasion, according to Manetho, there was one king in Egypt and “the hegemonizing ones” (rulers, leaders) who stand apart from him in the context, and analysis of the text shows that they are the local rulers who performed quasi-independence under the nominal sovereignty of kings of a certain dynasty. In the phase of Hyksos control over all of Egypt, the Hyksos kings of Avaris are depicted as supreme rulers over the “kings of Thebaid” and “[kings] of other Egyptian lands” who are titularly equated with their Hyksos overlords by Manetho; at some point they overthrow the Hyksos yoke and begin the war against Avaris. By the end of this struggle, by Manetho, only the Theban kings are acting on the Egyptian side. This picture largely coincides with real history (the fragmentation of Egypt before the emergence of the Avaris kingdom and at the times of its hegemony; the division of all of Egypt between Avaris kingdom and the Theban kingdom independent of it in the last phase before the fall of Avaris). This reveals Manetho's high awareness of the real situation of the Second Intermediate Period; some primary sources of this awareness were probably inscriptions and literary compositions that directly reflected the interaction between various local rulers contemporaneous to each other.

Aim. Find the prevalence of CYP2C8*3 (rs10509681; rs11572080), PTGS-1 (rs10306135; rs12353214) and PTGS-2 (rs20417) alleles and genotypes in four ethnic groups among Laks, Avars, Dargins and Kumyks. Materials and methods. The study involved 400 volunteers from four ethnic groups living in Republic of Dagestan: 100 participants from each group. Carriage of polymorphic markers was determined by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results. Minor allele frequency of the CYP2C8 (rs10509681) was 5.5% in Avars, 10% in Dargins, Laks and Kumyks 6.5% both; CYP2C8 (rs11572080) was 5.5% in Avars, 9.5% in Dargins, 6.5% in Laks, 8.5% in Kumyks; PTGS-1 (rs10306135) in Avars 10.5%, in Dargins 13.0%, in Laks 9.5% and Kumyks 7.5%; PTGS-1 (rs12353214) in Avars 9.0%, in Dargins 4.5%, in Laks 7.5%, in Kumyks 8.0%; PTGS-2 (rs20417) in Avars 1.0%, in Dargins 2.5%, in Laks 3.5%, in Kumyks 5.0%. There were no significant differences between groups. Conclusion. The study of CYP2C8 and PTGS-1 and 2 gene polymorphisms is promising for predicting the effectiveness and safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy, due to the high prevalence of these polymorphisms in ethnic groups in the North Caucasus.

Abstract:
This paper is devoted to the Avar and Bulgarian borders in the Early Middle Ages. Period middle of VI centurt was a time of gaining homeland by Avars. This was followed by wars with the Germans, Gepids and Slavic tribal unions of Sklavines and Antes. Early campaigns against the Avars, the Franks were reconnaissance in force. Conflicts of Franks and Romans with Slavs and Avars were often used as a pretext for invasion. The boundaries of the Franks, Bavarians, Lombards, the Byzantine Empire with the Slavs were considered as the Avar Khaganate its borders. Avars immediately occupied the territory of the Pannonian Plain and the adjacent regions. Byzantium Empire during the second half of VI century managed to keep the border on the Danube. Lands of Moesia and Illyricum officially recognized for Byzantium Empire, despite to fact of Slavian migration in this region. Danube border collapsed after the revolt of Phocas in 602 year, the apogee of power of Avarians was 626 year, when Avars and Sklavines precipitated Constantinople. In fact, under the control of the Avars it was the vast majority of land in the Balkans, which were settled Slavs. Actions in the west against the Franks and the Lombards had to change the border, raids were made in order to capture of slaves. Unsuccessful siege of Constantinople and the revolt of the Slavs under leadership of Samo led to the crisis of the Avar Khaganate. Migration of Croats and Serbs to the Balkans, as well as the revolt of Bulgarian tribes it only deepened crisis of Avarian khaganate. Under the control of the Avars left only lands of nomads on plain. Revival of Avarian power take place only in the VIII century. The Balkans are no longer played the object of their campaigns, because there was formed the mighty Danube Bulgaria, which took control of the Slavs. Croats was also an obstacle to the Avar Khaganate. Avarian activity was possible only in a western direction, where they essentially pushed Khorutans, who were forced to seek help from the Bavarians. Avars at the invitation of the Lombards took part in the internecine wars in Friuli. Avars intervention in Lombardian and Bavarian policy was for Francs pretext for the invasion of the Avar Khaganate. After the defeat of the Franks Avars lost their empire and their possessions in Pannonia were converted into the Frankish frontier mark. Danube Bulgaria took part in the division of the legacy of the Avarian khaganate, but the power of the Bulgars in Transylvania and Pannonia was quite conventional. Under the effective control of the Danube Bulgaria and Wallachia were land Ongl (Bugeak). Camping in the direction of the Dnieper and the Tisza probably meant the desire to expand the area of influence.

Abstract. The Avatiu and Avarua sand-covered channels within the fringing reef of north Rarotonga, Cook Islands, contain foraminiferal assemblages considered to be predominantly derived from the adjacent reef platform. Benthonic species which display a depth restriction include Melonis affinis, Cassidulina delicata, Clavulina pacifica and Bolivina alata. Small (less than 200 μm), rare planktonic species, including Globigerina bulloides, are recovered from sediments as shallow as 8 m, but an increase in species diversity and abundance is noted at 30 m in Avarua channel and 48 m in Avatiu channel. No clear depth, substrate nor symbiont-associated restriction of species is evident, and this may result from mixing of primary microfaunal assemblages by sediment transport in this exposed part of the island.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Nomad Avar horde, which migrated to the Balkan region from Asia, soonly was included in the diplomatic system under the supremacy of Constantinople. After using territorial claims nomads on Romei lands, a short form of the institution of the supreme ruler and a small number of Avars, Roman Emperor Justinian I (527-565) signed the federative agreement with nomads. During the alliance, Avars tried to develop their independent political course. Such circumstance contradicted Eastern Rome’s interests and, in perspective, created a direct threat to the Empire. Using centuries of weakening the Byzantium on the Danube border, nomads started a series of raids against Empire allies and broke the deal with Constantinople. The diplomatic corps of nomads focused on disinforming the autocrat. As a result, it caused deterioration in relations between sides in the last years of rule of Justinian I and finally to a protracted military confrontation after the death of the Emperor, which lasted with breaks to the first third of VII cent. The main thesis of the article is the Avar-Romei political relations, which topic is considered primarily in the context of the wars. At the same time, the only basileus who succeeded in managing the long-term alliance with the future enemy of the Empire was Justinian the Great. In our opinion, the consideration of Avar-Romei political relations in this period illustrates, on the one hand, the specifics of the attitude of ‘Latin’ Byzantium to folks whose military potential it wanted to use. On the other hand, the peculiarities of the formation of another ‘steppe empire’, which by the way, turned out to be more stable in ethnic and political aspects than the Huns. Based on the messages of Romei historians in the second half of VI cent., the article recreates the terms and the precedents of concluding and further observance by the parties of the Avar-Byzantium alliance during the final period of Justinian the Great rule. The author tried to chronologically recreate the picture of the initial step of Avar-Romei relations that primarily evolved in mutually beneficial coexistence. This was primarily caused both by low numbers of Avars and insufficient formation nomads’ elites, as well as the political experience of Justinian the First. The focus is on the relations between nomad folks and Empire federates, such as Alans, Antes, and Gepids. Against the background of military-political connections of Avars with their neighbors, their first initial steps are noticeable. Analyzed factors that promoted Avars’ initial transition under Rome’s supremacy and the slow creation of their own policy course by Avar Khagan Bayan.

Abstract:
A feature of the career development of the military nobility of the Eastern Roman Empire in the last third of the sixth century was participation in diplomatic missions. Acting as envoys of the Justinian emperors, Roman generals and soldiers represented the interests of Constantinople before the barbarian rulers. The peculiar turnover of personnel was facilitated by the peculiarities of Roman diplomacy aimed at political neutralisation of neighbours, as well as the personal desire of autocrats to test their protégés in the foreign policy arena. This was compounded by the lack of experienced diplomats and generals in the Roman Empire. As a result, a number of soldiers and generals of the Empire who enjoyed the personal trust of emperors often acted as envoys in negotiations with the rulers of barbarian political units. The scribon Comentiolus, who was involved in the Roman embassy sent in 583 to the Avar Khagan Bayan I (562–602), was no exception to this context. Having been the personal bodyguard of Emperor Maurice (582–602) at the beginning of his reign, Comentiolus later held the positions of dux of Mesia, military master of the East, and stratigos of Thrace. Comentiolus career growth was mainly due to his talent as a commander. Nevertheless, at the beginning of his service to Maurice, scribo was sent by Mauritius as an ambassador to the headquarters of the Avar Khan to end the war with Constantinople that began in 582. Despite the formal heading of the mission to Anchialus by Senator Elpidius, scribo actually defended the interests of the Empire. Bayan’s provocations during the negotiations with the Romans provoked Commentius to make a patriotic speech in which he accused the Avars of disrespecting Constantinople. Ultimately, Comentiolus’ actions as ambassador were the direct cause of the failure of the diplomatic mission and the continuation of the war.

Abstract:
Among Justinian the Great’s (527–565) successors, the personality and career of Byzantine warlord and politician Tiberius stand out. Despite the lack of statements about Tiberius’ early life, there were enough facts about the circumstances that led to his rise in the hierarchy of late Roman society. Emperor Justin II (565–578) trusted him personally, and he also participated in diplomatic negotiations with barbarians, where he represented Roman interests. Along with the weak health of Justin, these circumstances contributed to the following adoption of a future warlord by the Emperor’s Family. Relationship with Avar Khanate had already been in priority for Tiberius before he was elected Justin’s co-ruler in 576. Taking part in talks with nomads, Tiberius focused on the necessity of renewing alliances with the Avars and directing military power toward the tribes that posed a constant threat to the Empire. In perspective, Tiberius’ course of appeasement with the nomads brought an end to the war in 568–570. His actions provided the Empire with the possibility of strengthening political and military might in the Danube limes in the next few years and also politically neutralized the Avars through permanent military conflicts with their closest neighbors. In practice, the Nomad noble, being enriched with money from Constantinople, made peace with Romeis. The Avars increased their military strength by focusing their efforts on conquering Slavs. This circumstance in one way let the nomads to start their foreign policy pressure on Empire again. Political vicissitudes of the last quarter of the VI cent. were accompanied by the exchange of ambassadorial missions, the provision of gifts, as a means of influencing third parties to a specific political course in the early Middle Ages.

Abstract:
AbstractChemical stimuli were presented to individuals of the hermit crab Diogenes avarus to determine the nature of the interactions between stimuli that elicit conflicting responses. The odour of degraded snail flesh (a signal associated with potential empty shells) elicited an increase in both locomotion and the rate of grasping of gastropod shells. The odour of a visual predator (Matuta lunaris) elicited a cessation of locomotion by the hermit crabs. When snail flesh odour was presented in combination with various strengths of the predator odour (5% to 100%), the responses tended to show a step-function relationship to stimulus strength. Predator inhibition of snail-induced grasping dominated until predator strength was just 5% of full strength odour. However, 5% predator odour alone induced a response similar to full strength predator odour. In the case of locomotion, snail-induced increases predominated no matter what the strength of the predator odour. For both behaviours, responses of hermit crabs tended to be hierarchical rather than graded.

Abstract:
Even though this is not a new publication, Pohl’s study on the Avars deserves particular attention, now in its first English translation. While not identified on the cover page, Pohl’s book was superbly translated into English by Will Sayers, who is briefly mentioned in the preface. Pohl had published his book originally in German in 1988, and it appeared in its third edition in 2015. Only in the last few decades has our awareness and understanding of the Avars grown and changed, particularly because intensive archaeological evidence has vastly changed our concept of that Steppe people who lived in the Carpathian Basin long before the Magyars settled there. Consequently, Pohl has made great efforts to reflect on the new insights and rewrote the respective sections of this book. In short, although here we hold in our hands ‘only’ the English translation of the third edition, The Avars represents, after all, a new approach and a thorough update of the current research on that people that had significant influence on the Byzantines, the Germanic peoples to the west and southwest, and to the north and east. They were the first to introduce into Europe the stirrup, but they left practically no written sources. They were Nomadic people, and yet not simply barbarians, as later chroniclers liked to call them. Hence, Pohl’s study on this early medieval people sheds important light on the political and military structure of early medieval Europe in an area where the Byzantine sphere of interest ended and where the Carolingians endeavored to place their stakes.

Abstract:
Written on the basis of field material, using general and special methods of historical science, the article is devoted to the description of the mythological characters of the former pantheon and pandemonium of the Gumbet Avars that have survived to the Soviet post-war and modern times – personified celestial bodies and atmospheric phenomena, mummers and dolls, cartridges of wild animals and hunting , supreme deities; "House snakes", penetrating into the dwelling and strangling a person during sleep, evil demons, antagonists of pregnant women, shaitans. The sources of these representations are folklore (mythology, oaths, good wishes, sayings), vocabulary and phraseology, calendar, family and social rituals, customs and beliefs. With the adoption of the Muslim religion by the Gumbet Avars, most of the mythological characters of their pagan pantheon and pandemonium were consigned to oblivion, and some of the surviving ones, in view of the stability of traditional religious beliefs in the spiritual culture of the ethnic group, were Islamized and took the form of syncretic and "domestic Islam". Some of the Islamized mythological characters have become mediators between man and the Almighty, which is contrary to the doctrine of Islam. A significant role in the consolidation of pre-monotheistic beliefs in the spiritual culture of the Avars and other peoples of Dagestan in the Soviet and modern times was played by the healthy conservatism inherent in all Dagestanis and the peculiarities of their mentality – adherence to the traditional way of life. This circumstance inspires certain confidence in the preservation of their religious, cultural and ethnic identity in the era of globalization.

Abstract:
Ziya Şakir is a well-known author for his works published in newspapers and magazines. The author, known as Ziya Şakir during the Ottoman period, took the surname “Soko” with the Surname Law enacted during the Republican period. He also used nicknames such as Z. Melek, Hüseyin Servet, Bahtiyar, M. Ziya, Emekligil, Hamid Nuri, Abdülmüheymin. In his works, in which he included historical realities, he met with people who witnessed events other than memoirs or documents, and assumed the duty of “oral historiography” by recording the memories described verbally. Avar Oğlu that is published in Yarım Ay magazine in 1935 is one of author’s works where he brought a historical truth together with fiction. The work, which deals with the Avars that were the first Turks sieging Istanbul, has a narrative style that prioritizes Turkish tradition and morality over other nations. The work, which includes taboos, Shamanist beliefs, rowing bone fortune telling, which is one of the types of fortune telling, and beliefs that numbers are sacred, brings together the values transferred from the past to the present with the reader. In this study, it was investigated how the author, who started from a historical reality and emphasized the importance of the Avars on the stage of history, conveyed Turkish customs and beliefs in Avar Oğlu. As a result of the examination, it was determined that Ziya Şakir used the spiritual values that built bridges between generations to highlight the character traits of the Turks. Keywords: Ziya Şakir, Avars, siege of İstanbul, Turkish beliefs, history.

Abstract:
This article addresses the question of the archaeological sites relating to the Danube Slavs (Sclavi), who first came into contact with the Avars in the sixth century. The isolated groups of the people of the Prague culture penetrated into the area in between of the Danube and the Adriatic, Pannonia to the south-west of Lake Balaton and the Eastern Alps in particular, from the first third of the sixth century onwards. These settlements possess some features similar to the Slavic sites of the Prague culture. No doubts, this area ap- peared under the rule of the Avars when the Pannonian Lombards migrated to Italy in 568 AD and left their lands for the Avars. The cemetery of Regensburg-Grossprüfening in Bavaria is of particular importance for the correct understanding of the situation in the region under study. The site contained 22 Slavic cremation graves, where Merovingian goods appeared. There were a few graves featuring prestigious artefacts. It has been assumed that there was the resettlement of the Slavs, most likely being an elite military grouping, ca 568 AD, under the pressure of the Avar expansion. If this interpretation is correct, there was a departure of the elites of the Middle Danubian Slavs from the Avar power zone. Perhaps it resulted in a change of the social structure of the Pannonian Slavs, which explained their more dependent place in the Avar Khanate, in contrast to those of the Lower Danubian and Balkan Slavs, who also found themselves in the sphere of the Avar power.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION To compare the citation indices of original articles and case reports in otolaryngology journals and thereby determine whether case reports are of less interest and possibly of academically inferior value to original articles. METIERIALS AND METHODS All articles in two reputable UK otolaryngology journals (Clinical Otolaryngology and Journal of Laryngology and Otology) for 2000 and 2001 were identified. Citation indices were obtained from ISI Web of Knowledge and compared. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft® Office Excel 2003. RESULTS Review articles were cited most frequently with a mean of 5.21 followed by original articles with 4.28 citations and case reports with 2.40 citations. The difference in citing between original articles and case reports was statistically significant (P < 0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference in citations between review articles and original articles. CONCLUSIONS As case reports are clearly of lesser academic value than original and review articles, we suggest a scoring system incorporating journal impact factor and a scoring multiple taking into account study design. This facilitates easier comparison and recognition of publications in curricula vitae during job application.
