Abstract:
Distinct 18O depletion is characteristic of a large majority of the 620–550 Ma felsic igneous rocks of Avalonia in the northern Appalachian orogen. Neoproterozoic rocks in the Boston Avalon terrane have the lowest δ18OWR values (≥–3.1‰), followed by the Mira terrane in Cape Breton Island and the Caledonia terrane in New Brunswick (≥–1.2‰), the Avalon terrane in Newfoundland (≥+2.8‰), and the Antigonish Highlands in Nova Scotia (≥+5.3‰). In contrast, this depletion of 18O is observed in very few of the Paleozoic felsic igneous rocks from these Avalonian terranes, and also in very few of the Neoproterozoic and Paleozoic felsic igneous rocks from the inboard Ganderian terranes. The low-18O character of the Neoproterozoic igneous rocks is related to regional pervasive, post-magmatic alteration by predominantly meteoric-hydrothermal fluids (δ18OH2O ∼–6‰ to –4‰) at 200–450 °C. The alteration likely occurred during late Neoproterozoic transtensional extension of Avalonia. Large-scale fluid infiltration and circulation within the Avalonian crust accompanied this extension with development of pull-apart sedimentary basins and extension-related magmatism that were the prelude to Cambrian submergence of Avalonia. This regional 18O depletion provides a geochemical fingerprint by which Avalonia can be distinguished from other peri-Gondwanan terranes. These data suggest that Avalonia existed as a composite terrane on the Gondwanan margin in the Neoproterozoic, separate from Ganderia.

Abstract:
A paleomagnetic study of subaerial volcanic rocks and associated siltstones of the Ediacaran Bull Arm Formation in the Avalon Zone of Newfoundland revealed a stable bipolar, hematite-borne primary remanence supported by positive conglomerate, contact, and fold tests. Mean remanence directions in two distal areas (Bonavista and Argentia) are similar, indicating a low paleolatitude position of Avalonia at ∼570 Ma. Redbeds of the overlying ∼550 Ma Crown Hill Formation also carry a primary bipolar hematite-borne remanence with moderate inclination, indicating that Avalonia remained at low to medium paleolatitudes through the end of the Ediacaran. Combining our results with previously published paleomagnetic data of Avalonia suggests moderate-scale drift of Avalonia through low southern paleolatitudes through the latter half of the Ediacaran, providing a paleogeographic context for the development of the first complex metazoan life.

Abstract:
Results are reported from steeply dipping red sandstones collected at nine sites (45 samples) of the Lower Cambrian Morrison River and MacCodrum formations on southeast Cape Breton Island, which forms part of the Avalon terrane. Demagnetization studies indicate minimal overlap of stability spectra in thermal, alternating-field, and chemical treatments. A stable component (hematite) with high unblocking temperatures (680 °C) is dominant at all sites. Its mean direction corrected for geologic tilt is D = 281°, I = +32°, k = 97, giving a paleomagnetic pole (pole M) at 20°N, 146°W (dp, dm = 3°, 6°). The corresponding in situ direction is D = 147°, I = +59°, k = 97, with a pole M′ at 2°S, 39°W (dp, dm = 6°, 8°). Poles M and M′ were compared with published Paleozoic poles for the Avalon Zone and cratonic North America to test whether the magnetization originated before or after the Taconic (Ordovician) folding. It could have been acquired during deposition or early diagenesis (Early to Middle Cambrian), in which case the paleolatitude differences between Morrison River–MacCodrum and age-equivalent cratonic sites require a minimum 20° post-Early Cambrian displacement between Avalon Zone and craton. This is, however, difficult to verify, since a fold test is not possible and well-dated Cambrian poles from Avalonia are lacking. Three or four of the many post-Cambrian results from the Avalon and Gander zones were found to be comparable with pole M′, so that alternatively the Morrison River–MacCodrum magnetization could be a postfolding, Late Ordovician–Early Silurian or Late Devonian overprint.

Abstract:
During Cambrian and earliest Ordovician times, Avalonia was an area forming an integral part of the huge Gondwanan continent, probably along the northern margin of Amazonia, until in early Ordovician (late Arenig or Llanvirn) time it split off from Gondwana, leaving a widening Rheic Ocean to its south. Today, its southern margin with Gondwana extends northeast from east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, through Nova Scotia north of the Meguma terrane, and thence below sea level to the south of Newfoundland. On the eastern side of the present Atlantic, the southern margin may separate southwest Portugal from the rest of the Iberian Peninsula; it can be traced eastwards with more certainty from the south Cornwall nappes to a line separating the Northern Phyllite Belt (on the southern margin of the Rhenohercynian terrane) and the Mid-German Crystalline High. There is no certain evidence of Avalonian crust to the northeast of the Elbe Line. The northern margin of Avalonia extends westwards from south of Denmark to the British Isles, where it merges with the Iapetus Ocean suture between Scotland and England. Traced westwards, it crosses Ireland and reappears in northern Newfoundland to the east of New World Island, where it may follow the trace of the Dog Bay Line and the Cape Ray Fault. Recent work suggests that the northern margin of Avalonia may clip the northern tip of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, and then enter the North American mainland at the Bay of Chaleur; it may then be traced from north and west of the Popelogan and Bronson Hill arcs to Long Island Sound near Newhaven, Connecticut. The Cambrian to Devonian faunas reflect the history of Avalonia: initially they were purely Gondwanan but, as Ordovician time proceeded, more genera crossed firstly the Tornquist Ocean as it narrowed between Avalonia and Baltica to close in latest Ordovician and early Silurian times, and secondly the Iapetus Ocean, so that by the early Silurian most of the benthic shelly faunas, apart from the ostracods, were the same round the adjacent margins of all three palaeocontinents.

Kundu, Mohendra Narayan. "A critical edition of the Devanāgarī Recension of the Daśarūpa and the Avaloka." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/28382.

Abstract:
This thesis comprises an introduction, and the text of the Daśarūpa and the Avaloka thereon. In the Introduction I have given an account of the manuscripts selected and cited in the apparatus and have explained the arrangement of text and apparatus. I have also included in the Introduction an outline of the contents of the Daśarūpa and the Avaloka with some critical comments. Dhanañjaya and Dhanika have tried to revive the tātparya theory to explain the function of dhvani. The tātparya theory is arguably the most plausible alternative to the dhvani theory. While Anandavardhana holds Sentiment to be suggestion, Dhanañjaya and Dhanika consider Sentiment to be purport. A relative evaluation of the two theories in the perspective of the analogy of word-sense and sentence-sense has been made to show that the difference between these two theories is one of emphasis. The tātparya theory has been misunderstood and misrepresented by many theorists and did not receive the recognition it deserves. The tacit admission by Anandavardhana that the dhvani theory complements the view of the Mīmāmsakas should ensure the rightful place of the tātparya theory in the wider background of Sanskrit poetics. Dhanañjaya and Dhanika have been influenced by Bhattanāyaka in their interpretation of Bharata’s rasasūtra. And Bhattanāyaka’s interpretation is not very different to that of Abhinavagupta. The controversial question as to whether Dhanañjaya and Dhanika allow Śāntarasa in poetry has also been discussed. The text of the Daśarūpa with the Avaloka commentary has been based on a collation of seven manuscripts and one printed edition.  In constituting the text of the Daśarūpa and the Avaloka thereon, I have, for the most part, chosen the major reading. Occasionally, I have selected a minority reading that explains all variants. A few editorial emendations had to be made. Most of them involve correction of spelling mistakes. All major emendations have been justified by reasons; the reader is of course free to select another reading with the help of the critical apparatus annexed to the text and commentary.

Abstract:
Natural gas markets in the United States depend on an extensive network of pipelines to transport gas from production fields to end users. While these pipelines are essential for the operation of natural gas markets, their capacity sets a physical limit on the quantity of gas that can be moved between regions. Taking advantage of a rich data set of daily pipeline capacities and flows, this thesis tests the effects of binding pipeline constraints directly. It is found that these constraints affect the citygate prices for the Florida and Southern California markets. The Law of One Price is tested using cointegration techniques and found to hold when pipeline flows are not constrained, and break down during constrained periods. It is also shown that cointegration techniques may not identify bottlenecks between regions when bottlenecks are not severe, or when they only occur for limited periods of time. Contrary to earlier results, Southern California markets are found to be integrated with the national market. Cointegration tests using data from 14 market points suggest that regional wholesale natural gas markets in the United States are generally integrated into a national market.

Background: Given the importance of identifying nutritional needs, dietary intake of centenarians and other oldest old groups has been studied on several prospects, dietary patterns of the oldest old as well as predictors of nutritional deficiency in this population. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status of the oldest old. Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical with the oldest old. The study population consisted of elderly aged over 90 years living in Porto Alegre. The nutritional assessment was conducted analyzing dietary parameters, such as 24 hours Food Recall and Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). We also checked the anthropometric, biochemical and socioeconomic characteristics. Results: We evaluated 44 elderly, 33 (75%) women and 11 (25%) men. The oldest old respondents, 31 (72%) did not need financial assistance to buy food, but only 31% purchased or participated in the acquisition of food. Participation in the preparation of their own meal was 29.5%, and 20.5% said the longevity prepare your meal without assistance. Men had a higher socioeconomic status than women, with significant p = 0.0174. It was verified low calcium intake, fruit and vegetables and high consumption of sweet foods and drinks. Conclusion: In this study we found that most of the oldest patient was outside the nutritional risk and total caloric intake of the oldest was adequate. However we observed some important micronutrient deficiencies. In this case, the oldest of nutritional assessment was of paramount importance, since it allows developing strategies for implementing nutritional interventions directed in order to meet the demands of this population and consequently generate improved quality of life.

We had as the problem of analysis in this research: what are the assumptions, principles and general content that based the Sistema Nacional de Avalia??o da Educa??o Superior (SINAES). We started from the hypothesis that the general content of SINAES is essentially based on the assumptions and principles of a control/regulatory perspective of evaluation and a summative epistemology, objectivist and quantitativist, constituted by members who prioritize testing and classification of courses and institutions based on market values. The overall goal was to make a political evaluation of SINAES and the specific objectives were: a) apply the concepts of politics evaluation and meta-evaluation, b) identify the role of international organizations in education reform in the 1990s and its impact on superior education in Brazil c) redeem the concept of evaluation, especially in the field of studies in education; and d) investigate the evaluation policies of Brazilian superior education leading to SINAES. As for the technical procedures for collecting and analyzing data, the research was made with bibliography and documents, considering that it was developed by bibliographic sources and official publications. It was developed by crossing sources: texts or documents remitted to others; it was also concentrated: on the role of international organizations in educational and State reforms (in the 1990s); on the policies of evaluation of the Brazilian superior education (1980s and 1990s); on the proposal of the Comiss?o Especial de Avalia??o (CEA); on the Law No. 10.861/2004; on the documents of CONAES; on the Decree No. 5.773/2006, and the MEC Regulatory Ordinances No. 4/2008 and No. 12/2008. It did not stop in the so called purely technical aspects, but in the ideological field itself. The research found that international organizations, notably the World Bank, played a political, intellectual and financial role determinant to the field of education, a fact that reflects in the legal framework. It was also found that the politics of evaluation of the superior education is historically marked by conflict, represented by two distinct perspectives of different natures and emphases. On one hand, the focus is on control / regulation, favoring efficiency, productivity and competitiveness benchmarking and prioritizing the punctual performance and measurement. On the other, it seeks to transform academic perspective in primarily formative / emancipatory, in order to support more institutional improvement. It was concluded that the CEA presented a conception evaluation predominantly formative and emancipatory, which emphasized the idea of system, centered around the institution and repudiated the rankings practices. In the post-formulation period, however, some of its principles were fragmenting and, gradually, the institution was giving way to the courses and the Exame Nacional de Desempenho de Estudantes (ENADE) grew in prominence. With the creation of the Conceito Preliminar de Cursos superiores (CPC) and of the ?ndice Geral de Cursos da Institui??o de Educa??o Superior (IGC), it was redemeed the practice of evaluation as measurement and control, under the principles of efficiency and productivity. So, SINAES that seemed like a progressive evaluation method has assumed a setting that close resembles the Exame Nacional de Cursos (ENC-Prov?o). Nevertheless, the survival of institutional formative evaluation, in the superior education evaluation policies, still an issue in dispute

Tamb?m s?o abordados aspectos positivos, negativos, vantagens e desvantagens e as diferen?as dessas duas t?cnicas.

The increase in the number of cores available in Systems on a Chip has enabled the design of circuits with increasingly aggressive specifications. Efficient interconnection architectures such as intrachip networks are critical to the viability of these projects. However, measuring and comparing performanceof these networks for a given system is still a challenging task, which results from: (i) the complexity imposed by the abundance of available options in the design space of these networks; (ii) the current non-adoption of a unique evaluation platform to compare different networks proposals; (iii) the fact that the network traffic has a greater influence on the performance of such networks than any other design characteristic. This work has as main strategic goal the evaluation and comparison of different intrachip network architectures through the use of a unified evaluation platform. It adopts Nocbench, a recent platform, already validated in some contexts and proposed as a standard for the evaluation of intrachip networks. The employed evaluation method is based on the simulation of networks and uses as input traffic and computation models described in the form of traces, both extracted from real application. The main contributions of this work reside in: (i) the proposal of several enhancements to the chosen platform; (ii) the development of modules added to integrate the networks Hermes HS,Hermes OO, Hermes TB, Hermes VC, and YeaH from the author?s research group to the platform; (iii) the enhancement of the platform performance evaluation process, through the inclusion of metrics usually employed to compare intrachip networks, including: latency, throughput and jitter. A set of experiments validates the contributions and demonstrate the use the Nocbench platform as a useful tool in the comparison of intrachip networks of diverse origins.

Abstract:
