Abstract:
Developing technologies have made significant progress towards linking the brain with brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) which have the potential to aid damaged brains to perform their original motor and cognitive functions. We consider the viability of such devices for mitigating the deleterious effects of memory loss that is induced by neurodegenerative diseases and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our computational study considers the widely used Hopfield network, an autoassociative memory model in which neurons converge to a stable state pattern after receiving an input resembling the given memory. In this study, we connect an auxiliary network of neurons, which models the BMI device, to the original Hopfield network and train it to converge to its own auxiliary memory patterns. Injuries to the original Hopfield memory network, induced through neurodegeneration, for instance, can then be analyzed with the goal of evaluating the ability of the BMI to aid in memory retrieval tasks. Dense connectivity between the auxiliary and Hopfield networks is shown to promote robustness of memory retrieval tasks for both optimal and nonoptimal memory sets. Our computations estimate damage levels and parameter ranges for which full or partial memory recovery is achievable, providing a starting point for novel therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:
Sequential recommendations have attracted increasing attention from both academia and industry in recent years. They predict a given user’s next choice of items by mainly modeling the sequential relations over a sequence of the user’s interactions with the items. However, most of the existing sequential recommendation algorithms mainly focus on the sequential dependencies between item IDs within sequences, while ignoring the rich and complex relations embedded in the auxiliary information, such as items’ image information and textual information. Such complex relations can help us better understand users’ preferences towards items, and thus benefit from the recommendations. To bridge this gap, we propose an auxiliary information-enhanced sequential recommendation algorithm called memory fusion network for recommendation (MFN4Rec) to incorporate both items’ image and textual information for sequential recommendations. Accordingly, item IDs, item image information and item textual information are regarded as three modalities. By comprehensively modelling the sequential relations within modalities and interaction relations across modalities, MFN4Rec can learn a more informative representation of users’ preferences for more accurate recommendations. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of MFN4Rec over state-of-the-art sequential recommendation algorithms.

This article analyses three local educational projects about the Nazi bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940, all of which took place from 1980 to the present day in the context of the dynamic memory culture of the bombardment. These three contexts testify to a process by which memory, increasingly derived from authentic locations and objects instead of individual memories, is put to use in education. Moreover, increased awareness of the disappearance of eyewitness generations means that young people are becoming key consumers and auxiliary producers of memory.

Abstract:
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely applied in the fields of medical tasks because they can achieve high accuracy in many fields using a large number of parameters and operations. However, many applications designed for auxiliary checks or help need to be deployed into portable devices, where the huge number of operations and parameters of a standard CNN can become an obstruction. MobileNet adopts a depthwise separable convolution to replace the standard convolution, which can greatly reduce the number of operations and parameters while maintaining a relatively high accuracy. Such highly structured models are very suitable for FPGA implementation in order to further reduce resource requirements and improve efficiency. Many other implementations focus on performance more than on resource requirements because MobileNets has already reduced both parameters and operations and obtained significant results. However, because many small devices only have limited resources they cannot run MobileNet-like efficient networks in a normal way, and there are still many auxiliary medical applications that require a high-performance network running in real-time to meet the requirements. Hence, we need to figure out a specific accelerator structure to further reduce the memory and other resource requirements while running MobileNet-like efficient networks. In this paper, a MobileNet accelerator is proposed to minimize the on-chip memory capacity and the amount of data that is transferred between on-chip and off-chip memory. We propose two configurable computing modules: Pointwise Convolution Accelerator and Depthwise Convolution Accelerator, to parallelize the network and reduce the memory requirement with a specific dataflow model. At the same time, a new cache usage method is also proposed to further reduce the use of the on-chip memory. We implemented the accelerator on Xilinx XC7Z020, deployed MobileNetV2 on it, and achieved 70.94 FPS with 524.25 KB on-chip memory usage under 150 MHz.

Abstract:
Deep reinforcement learning algorithms typically require vast amounts of data to train to a useful level of performance. Each time new data is encountered, the network must inefficiently update all of its parameters. Auxiliary memory units can help deep neural networks train more efficiently by separating computation from storage, and providing a means to rapidly store and retrieve precise information. We present four deep reinforcement learning models augmented with external memory, and benchmark their performance on ten tasks from the Arcade Learning Environment. Our discussion and insights will be helpful for future RL researchers developing their own memory agents.

Abstract:
Computer memories now play a key role in our everyday life given the increase in the number of connected smart devices and wearables. Recently post-CMOS memory technologies are gaining significant research attention along with the regular ones. Spin Transfer Torque Magnetoresistive RAM (STT-MRAM) is one such post-CMOS memory technology with a rapidly growing commercial interest and potential across diverse application platforms. Research has shown the ability of STT-MRAM to replace different levels of memory hierarchy as well. In brief, STT-MRAM possesses all the favorable properties of a universal memory technology. In this dissertation we have explored the roles of this emerging memory technology beyond traditional storage. The purpose is to enhance the overall performance of the application platform that STT-MRAM is a part of. The roles that we explored are computation and security. We have discussed how the intrinsic properties of STT-MRAM can be used for computation and authentication. The two properties that we are interested in are the dipolar coupling between the magnetic memory cells and the variations in the geometries of the memory cell. Our contributions here are a 22nm CMOS integrated STT-MRAM based logic-in-memory architecture and a geometric variation based STT-MRAM signature generation. In addition we have explored the device physics and the dynamics of STT-MRAM cells to propose a STT based clocking mechanism that is friendlier with the logic-in-memory setup. By investigating the logic layouts and propagation style in the architecture, we have also proposed different techniques that can improve the logic density and performance of the architecture.

Abstract:
A particularly efficient attack class is the class of cache timing attacks, that exploit the difference of time between cache memories and main memory, and are considered in this thesis with a cryptographic point of view. One aim of this thesis is to understand better such attacks. In other hand, the Rowhammer attack that induces perturbations in the capacitors of the DRAM modules in order to create an error called a fault that are also considered in this thesis with a cryptographic point of view. This thesis explores different microarchitectures features before exploring cache timing attacks and fault attack with the Rowhammer attack in mind. Based on the knowledge about these features, the thesis is split in two parts. The first part is about cache timing attacks. It gathers useful hardware and software features that should be considered to perform precise timing measurements. Those considerations were used to improve an existing attack on ECDSA on a known vulnerability. One result of this thesis will fill the gap between the general techniques used for the attacks and the exploitation of a vulnerability by searching such vulnerability in a binary by using dynamic analysis. In the second part of this thesis, fault attacks closed of the Rowhammer attack are considered. Like the first part, a way to perform software analysis is given.Eventually, in the second part a result about a so called persistent fault attack is improved. This thesis mainly focuses on improving existing attacks and on new ways to perform software analysis of cache timing attacks and attacks related to the Rowhammer attack in order to fill the needs of manufacturers to protect theirs products against those attacks

Abstract:

Documentos, universidad, evidencia, eficacia, memoria, investigación, archivo.

Abstract:
Immunological memory is the fundamental biological mechanism at the beginning of the development of vaccination. Understanding this mechanism and its interactions with the various players of the immune system has allowed the development of vaccines that are today the most effective barrier against the emergence of life-threatening infectious diseases. Route of injection and the nature of carriers of these vaccines are key parameters to be taken into consideration because they define a modulation of immune responses and their specific features. Nowadays, only the intramuscular injection route remains the major route of vaccines injection in the context of primary prophylaxis in human health. During our study, we were interested in comparing the injection of antigen (ovalbumin) following two routes of administration: intramuscular and intradermal routes. We also relied on a technology in the laboratory that involves the transfer of genes by rAAV2/1 vectors. We had two constructs of these vectors having specificity to target skeletal muscle cells and allowing us to provide a helper effect from CD4+ T cells during injections into female mice recipients. Moreover, one of these constructs enabled us to avoid the direct presentation of antigens by dendritic cells (DCs) to CD8+ T cells. The capacity of modulation of these vectors allowed us to show for the first time that the rAAV2/1 vector was able to trigger the expression of a transgene in the skin, and there to generate a strong cellular response. We have also shown that CD4+ T cell help and the intradermal route of immunization synergize to improve greatly cellular responses from the cross-presentation of antigens. Finally, we have demonstrated that CD8+ T cells generated following this synergism exhibited a phenotypic profile of polyfunctional memory cells and able to protect the host against a pathogenic challenge

Abstract:
During the last two decades, the studies about memory, or the memories, have reached a great relevance in the academy. Disciplines like anthropology offer an excellent starting point to study social phenomena linked to urban memory. The squatting of the former headquarters of a nineteenth century consumer cooperative, the Flor de Maig, presents a unique occasion to understand the relationships between memory and space. The building, with a long entailment with the neighborhood of Poblenou, Barcelona, turns into a symbol of local struggle front of certain way of understanding the city. Nevertheless, the recuperation and reconstruction of the popular memory of the neighbors could also limit the possible activities to be performed inside their walls, showing the potential and controversial character of the space.

This study aimed to analyze the memories narrated by young people in high school on cultural heritage significance. To this end, it was necessary to identify the narratives produced by students on a selected heritage in your community; evidencing the collective memories present on done narratives productions and thus understand how young people mobilized the collective memories and school knowledge in the productions about the cultural heritage. These narratives in the form of an album were produced by young people who participated in the heritage education and artistic Project, being constituted as a mediation element to the analysis of the memories, meant in the cultural patrimony elected as memorable in the produced narratives. This study guided by qualitative research approach in education, in the form of case study. It was analyzed four albums produced in the project EPA, in 2015, by young people of State High School Castro Alves, in the city of Adustina-BA. Analyzing the narratives produced by young people was evidenced that the elements of the collective memory are present on it and reveal the social memory constituent of the various groups as historic heritage structure. The results were organized in shafts; taking into account these elements become almost irreducible on solidification of memory. The narrative about the heritage Boqueirão Farm depicts memories about the making of the work, the suffering and the survival of the country person. The narrative about regional handicrafts refers to memories present in everyday objects and sharpen an aesthetic look and arts of doing (crafts). And a third narrative, the albums Vieiras´ Chapel and Senhor do Bonfim Church, is marked by the elements present in a religious memory so present and intense in the country people and blessed relationship. The results show that the meanings attributed to the haritage are related to memory produced collectively in the course of time. Course that becomes effective in zone of culture and persists as identification in what is memorable and what constitute them as belonging to a collectivity.
Abstract:
The memory of the Siege of Paris has always been bound up with the memory of the Commune, the short-lived revolutionary moment that ended in May 1871, four months after the end of the Siege. This coda offers a reading of a short story, “Deux amis,” written and published by Guy de Maupassant in 1883, to suggest that, while those Parisians who lived through the Siege were convinced of its historical exemplarity, memory has relegated the Siege to an auxiliary role in history: prelude to the Commune, precursor to the Great War. Reading the Siege from its own perspective, as The Culture of War proposes to do, shows how literature became a vehicle for expressing the absurdity of war and the threat of state violence against its own citizens.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter looks at generalized quantifiers from the perspective of dialogic interaction. Traditionally generalized quantifiers are treated as sets of sets or sets of properties. Barwise and Cooper also introduced the auxiliary notion of witness set for quantifiers under the heading “Processing quantified statements”. This chapter turns things around and make the characterization of witness sets the primary notion in defining quantifiers. This makes it more straightforward to account for the anaphoric possibilities relating to quantified expressions in dialogue. We often use quantified statements in dialogue when we have inadequate information to determine their truth. This is particularly true of determiners like every and most when talking about large sets. We suggest that this phenomenon can be analyzed by estimating a probability based on the evidence presented in our cognitive resources (long-term memory or beliefs as discussed in Chapters 4 and 6).

Abstract:
In 1956 Alain Resnais opened his film-essay Toute la mémoire du monde with the statement that owing to the short-lived nature of human remembering, people tend to accumulate countless auxiliary memories. The issue of “auxiliary memories” related to the search for one’s own identity is an ostinato theme of Sebald’s last novel Austerlitz where the titles and certain motifs articulated in three films by Resnais are appropriated in order to depict the twentieth century in terms of the uncanny. It was not by chance that a Jewish boy named Jacques Austerlitz, before he was sent from Prague in England by the last Kindertransport, and his mother to Theresienstadt, spent his last summer with the parents in Marienbad, a place to which he would return many years later and become haunted by something unknown. In Sebald’s narrative tissue such reference to L’Année dernier á Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad) rhizomatically lead to 1955 Resnais’s film-essay Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog), as well as to the psychoanalytic notion of the originally lost object. But, in the novel, Resnais is explicitly mentioned only once, in Austerlitz’s remembrance of the scene from Toute la mémoire du monde as fantastic and monstrous owing to footage of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris that shows the transportation of notes from reading room to storage. The performative of Sebald’s “monstrosity” is through narrative transversal related to the erasure of historical (holocaust) memory: the new library—erected on a site where Nazis had stored Jewish property which they had stolen during the Second World War—was, following a 1988 decision by the French president, to be the most modern and biggest library building in the world.

Abstract:
Pruitt, who regularly attended the First Methodist Church, photographed religious rituals including births, christenings, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and revivals. In the buckle of the Bible Belt, he took pictures of countless church groups, Black and white. He had no reservation about taking pictures of African Americans: “All you had to do was to pay him,” Lula May Williams said in a 1994 interview. She recalled how in 1942, Pruitt photographed her church—the only time Pruitt ever took her picture. She pointed to a panorama on her living room wall. The picture shows a hundred church members in their Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes. This image depicts the installation of a new pastor, Rev. R. M. Prowell, and the officers of the auxiliary groups of Shiloh Missionary Baptist, the oldest Black church in Columbus, founded in 1861. Lula May Williams’s treasuring of the photograph testifies to the power of an image to carry forth the memory of faith and faithfulness. Pruitt took the picture he was paid to take; the subjects of the photograph paid the price he asked and then put on the wall or on a table a framed picture to reinforce their belief in something spiritual, something they considered priceless.

Chaozhong Li of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry demonstrated (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 4037) facile and selective Cu-catalyzed β-lactam formation, converting 1 to 2. Paul Helquist of the University of Notre Dame devised (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 3903) an effective catalyst for intramolecular alkyne hydroamination, converting 3 into the imine 4. Six-membered ring construction worked well also. Jon T. Njardarson of Cornell University found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 5023) a Cu catalyst for the rearrangement of alkenyl aziridines such as 5 to the pyrroline 6. Philippe Karoyan of the UPMC, Paris developed (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 6706) an interesting chiral auxiliary directed cascade process, converting the simple precursor 7 into the complex pyrrolidine 9. Sherry R. Chemler of the State University of New York, Buffalo devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 17638) a chiral Cu catalyst for the cyclization of 10, to give 12 with substantial enantiocontrol. Wei Wang of the University of New Mexico demonstrated (Chem. Commun. 2008, 5636) the organocatalyzed condensation of 13 and 14 to give 16 with high enantio- and diastereocontrol. Two complementary routes to azepines/azepinones have appeared. F. Dean Toste of the University of California, Berkeley showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 9244) that a gold complex catalyzed the condensation of 17 and 18 to give 19. Frederick G. West of the University of Alberta found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 3985) that lactams such as 20 could be ring-expanded by the addition of the propiolate anion 21. Takeo Kawabata of Kyoto University extended (Organic Lett . 2008, 10, 3883) “memory of chirality” studies to the cyclization of 23, demonstrating that 24 was formed in high ee. Paul V. Murphy of University College Dublin took advantage (Organic Lett . 2008, 10, 3777) of the well-known intramolecular addition of azides to alkenes, showing that the intermediate could be intercepted with nucleophiles such as thiophenol, to give the cyclized product 26 with high diastereocontrol.

Manas K. Ghorai of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur depended (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 2311) on memory of chirality during deprotonation to convert 1 to the aziridine 3. X. Peter Zhang of the University of South Florida demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 5309) that Co-catalyzed enantioselective aziridination is compatible with fluoro-aromatics such as 5. David M. Hodgson of the University of Oxford prepared (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1098) the azetidine 8 by double deprotonation of 7 followed by acylation. Laurel L. Schafer of the University of British Columbia assembled (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2182) 11 by Ta-catalyzed aminoalkylation of 10 with 9, followed by cyclization. Nicholas A. Magnus of Eli Lilly reduced (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 5768) the ketone 12 to the alcohol 13 with high de and ee. Pei-Qiang Huang of Xiamen University effected (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1790) the reductive addition of 14 to 15 to give 16. The titanocene protocol reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 3494) by Xiao Zheng, also of Xiamen University, effectively mediated similar transformations. En route to (–)-quinocarcin, Nobutaka Fujii and Hiroaki Ohno of Kyoto University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 8875) 17 to 18 with high diastereoselectivity. Abstract:
A holographic memory in parallel information recording and the effect of carrier and interference noises are investigated. Noises are shown to influence the limit data storage density when information is recorded as one-dimentional holograms. A relation between the holographic memory storage capacity and the readout signal/noise ratio is determined. The use of one-dimentional holograms for interconnects in optical neural networks is considered. Another approuch for generating interconnects relies on multiplicators and beamsplitters built around special computer-synthesized HOEs. The fabrication of experimental samples of such elements for the visible spectral range by means of e-beam lithography is reported on. Combined liquid and plasmachemical development was used to provide a required relief depth. The minimum zone width is 300 nm and the maximum depth is 800 nm. Examples of beamsplitters for 630 nm and 530 nm with up to 1000 beams are given. Their possible use as auxiliary elements for making 3D holographic interconnection devices is considered.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the unsupervised scene adaptation problem of learning from both labeled source data and unlabeled target data. Existing approaches focus on minoring the inter-domain gap between the source and target domains. However, the intra-domain knowledge and inherent uncertainty learned by the network are under-explored. In this paper, we propose an orthogonal method, called memory regularization in vivo, to exploit the intra-domain knowledge and regularize the model training. Specifically, we refer to the segmentation model itself as the memory module, and minor the discrepancy of the two classifiers, i.e., the primary classifier and the auxiliary classifier, to reduce the prediction inconsistency. Without extra parameters, the proposed method is complementary to most existing domain adaptation methods and could generally improve the performance of existing methods. Albeit simple, we verify the effectiveness of memory regularization on two synthetic-to-real benchmarks: GTA5 → Cityscapes and SYNTHIA → Cityscapes, yielding +11.1% and +11.3% mIoU improvement over the baseline model, respectively. Besides, a similar +12.0% mIoU improvement is observed on the cross-city benchmark: Cityscapes → Oxford RobotCar.

Abstract:
We report the recording of holographic relief gratings in dye-in-polymer films previously developed for optical disk applications.1 Recording was performed with a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in a Mach–Zehnder interferometer configuration. Efficiencies in the first diffraction order of 3–4.5% were obtained. Strong diffraction into the second order was observed, which indicates a nonsinusoidal grating profile. We monitored grating formation during writing by means of an auxiliary He—Ne laser. The grating starts forming rapidly after the application of the laser pulse. Diffraction then reaches a maximum, after which the polymer cools off and relaxes to form a permanent grating. The polymer film can be used as the building block for a stratified-volume holographic medium.2 We have studied by computer simulation the storage capability of the artificial three-dimensional memory medium. The discrete nature of the medium leads to a multiplicity of Bragg angles in which the separation between peaks is dictated by the interlayer distance, and the width of the peaks is dictated by the overall structure thickness. The number of multiplexed holograms that can be stored and read out unambiguously in a three-dimensional memory application is equal to the number of layers in the structure.

Abstract:
Cross-network recommender systems use auxiliary information from multiple source networks to create holistic user profiles and improve recommendations in a target network. However, we find two major limitations in existing cross-network solutions that reduce overall recommender performance. Existing models (1) fail to capture complex non-linear relationships in user interactions, and (2) are designed for offline settings hence, not updated online with incoming interactions to capture the dynamics in the recommender environment. We propose a novel multi-layered Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network based online solution to mitigate these issues. The proposed model contains three main extensions to the standard LSTM: First, an attention gated mechanism to capture long-term user preference changes. Second, a higher order interaction layer to alleviate data sparsity. Third, time aware LSTM cell gates to capture irregular time intervals between user interactions. We illustrate our solution using auxiliary information from Twitter and Google Plus to improve recommendations on YouTube. Extensive experiments show that the proposed model consistently outperforms state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy, diversity and novelty.
