Abstract:
This chapter explores the basic ethical principle of autonomy and the related principles of veracity, fidelity, and avoidance of killing. The pharmacist’s role in recognizing and respecting the individual patient’s moral interests is discussed. The chapter addresses the psychological and moral meanings of the principle of autonomy and delineates the elements of a substantially autonomous decision. Circumstances are discussed when it would be morally justifiable to override the actions of a substantially autonomous person. Cases highlight the issues that arise in determining whether a person is substantially autonomous for health care purposes, those posed by external constraints on autonomy, and those that arise in consideration of overriding patient autonomy.

Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to the later Nietzsche’s conception of autonomy. The claim defended here is that Nietzsche—in common with the modern philosophical tradition more generally—regards freedom and autonomy as comprising an indissoluble package, and so that his conception of autonomy inherits the expressivism of his conception of freedom. It is argued that this view allows us to make better or fuller sense of Nietzsche’s well-known remarks about the ‘sovereign individual’ in the second essay of the Genealogy; that it makes best sense when seen in the context of Nietzsche’s doctrine of ‘will to power’, to the most plausible interpretation of which it lends support; and that, properly unpacked, it allows us to understand why Nietzsche so often seems to regards artistic agency as exemplary of agency as such. If these arguments are convincing, they add weight to the claim that Nietzsche should be read as an expressivist.

Abstract:
This chapter presents Cavell’s Emersonian perfectionism as a response to and interpretation of Kant. For Cavell, receptivity is the key to Emerson’s inheritance of Kant’s theoretical philosophy, as partiality is the key to his inheritance of Kant’s practical philosophy. Partiality for Emerson names both the individual agent’s inherent lack and its want for change and growth. The shameful experience of lack is the precondition for the transformative encounter with an exemplary other who enables the self’s conversion of the nihilistic conformity of everyday life as it is now lived. The chapter argues that Cavell’s insistence that Emersonian perfectionism sets itself against any idea of ultimate perfection does not condemn Cavell’s agents to an endless and hence nihilistic pursuit of an unrealizable telos, as it might seem, but instead furnishes the basis for democratic hope.

Abstract:
What rights do nations have to govern themselves and to control specific territories and the people living on these territories? What limits are there on these rights and on the activities of national communities and their political leaders? What projects can be justified primarily by appeals to the interests and identities of nations? A well-reasoned answer to these questions could be called a normative theory of national autonomy or national self-determination, which in turn is a central part of a normative theory of nationalism. It would be an understatement to note that political philosophers are far from any consensus about the broad content of a theory of national autonomy. Almost every central concept in, and assumption underlying, the above questions is contested. There are disputes about what nations are, or even if there are such things as nations.
