Abstract:
This thesis covers the use of chemistry in the automotive industry with emphasis on environmental compliance via chemical reporting by database and internal Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) screening, third party laboratory material testing, and the future of the chemist in the United States (U.S.) automotive industry. The third party testing was performed at Western Kentucky University (WKU) via the Materials Characterization Center (MCC), Institute for Combustion Science and Environmental Technology (ICSET) Thermodynamics Laboratory, and using the Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (SEM/EDX) managed by the WKU Biotechnology Center. Furthermore, the tests conducted were used to investigate material defects, provide solid third party quantitative results to support our XRF screenings to ensure environmental compliance, and determine cost effective material replacements. The company for which the testing was performed and information obtained is involved with the production of electronics for many of the major automotive companies throughout the world. The company specializes in the production of wiring harnesses, electrical control units (ECU), boxes (junction, fuse, relay, etc), and electrical components. These four areas control everything from the vehicle's lights, CD/DVD player, and heater to windows, locks, and navigation system. The automotive industry is extremely competitive; therefore, each company must continually change and improve in order to survive. New materials are constantly required to meet the reduced costs implemented by the customer, as well as, improve the function and quality of the components, while maintaining compliance with global environmental standards.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Environmental protection, shrinking of fossil fuels and problems like energy security has

resulted in emergence of a rapid growing alternate automotive fuel industry. This research is

pursued to identify and describe factors that affect sustainable growth of alternative

automotive fuel industry and advice firms in their strategy development for sustainable

growth.

The theoretical framework includes theories including different internal and external possible

factors that may affect an emerging industry.

The research methodology of this study constitutes of qualitative research approach,

comprising of both primary and secondary data. Primary data for this study is collected by

conducting a total of 9 interviews with officials from three Swedish alternate diesel engine oil

manufacturing companies. An overall industry analysis is conducted through PEST analysis,

data for this PEST analysis is gathered through official government websites, press releases,

newspapers, educational and environmental institute websites and scientific journals.

Interviews conducted with company officials also served the purpose.

The analysis of this study shows that government policies and subsidies have played an

important part to make these companies enter this market. Two of the companies included in

the case study were already active in closely related fields for a number of years and only

entered this market when favorable government regulations were available. The future of

these companies is very much associated with government regulations and companies those

fall beyond these regulations face difficulties to get subsidies and therefore in their growth.

Awareness of people about cleaner fuels is brought through media, education and government

policies that include taxes and tax rebates on different kind of fuels.

The companies bet on new technologies to resolve concerns generated by their fuels i.e. food

versus fuel debate. The authors analyzed technology to be an important factor if companies

want to remain in alternate fuel business for a long period of time.

The authors suggest companies to build their tangible and intangible resources i.e. raw

material, technologies, human resource flexibly to adopt diversified businesses in case if some

radical changes in fuel industry seizes their growth. It has also been seen that standardization

of products can prove helpful for companies to produce a working market.

Martín, Navarrete Rocío. "Computational aeroacoustics in the automotive industry." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/671787.

Full text
Abstract:
The acoustic field inside a car cabin for low driving speeds is dominated by the engine or the tire noise. However, for mid to high velocities, the noise generated by the interaction of the car with the external air becomes more relevant. The flow separation from the A-pillar or the side mirror generates strong pressure fluctuations which results in acoustic waves propagated to the interior via excitation of the side window or the windshield. At each point of the flow field domain, the pressure is composed by the hydrodynamic pressure and the acoustic pressure. For typical car speeds, the Mach number is so low that the fluctuations of the compressible part of the flow are much smaller than those of the incompressible part but their characteristic lengths and convection velocities have a higher correlation with the bending waves of the windows of the vehicle. As a consequence, it is usually accepted that the major part of the interior noise in the car cabin is generated by the compressible part of the external flow field arriving to the transmission surfaces. The present thesis is focused on the research of a suitable computational methodology that enables to obtain the acoustic pressure near the transmission surfaces. To this aim, an extensive review of the most popular methods of Computational Aeroacoustics is carried out in order to understand the physical mechanisms of sound generated by a fluid in motion around a solid body and the mathematical models that describe it based on the up-to-date available literature. Due to its simplicity, efficiency and usefulness, the so-called 'acoustic analogy' proposed by Curle as an extension of the theory developed by James Lighthill is chosen to evaluate the acoustic pressure of the cases of study within this dissertation. n particular, among all the different components of a vehicle the flow pattern and acoustic performance of very wide open cavities have been deeply analysed due to its common presence in any type of vehicle design for soiling management or manufacturing restrictions. This configuration is known to be the cause of conspicuous acoustic problems such as whistles due to the well defined tonal noise known in the literature as Rossiter modes. The flow nature of this phenomena as well as its radiating pattern and response to different geometrical modifications are addressed in this work. A particular feature of this configuration is the oscillatory mode: shear layer mode (SL) or wake mode (WM). For the parameters considered in the present dissertation it is seen that while in SL the flow shows a two-dimensional behaviour, in WM the flow is three-dimensional, resulting in significantly different sound sources. The computation of the acoustic pressure is done using Curle's formulation evaluated as a post-process of an unsteady incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution and compared with the results obtained with Direct Simulation (DS). It is found that DS and Curle's analogy are in good agreement except in the wake area, where quadrupole acoustic sources are present. Regarding the evaluation of the passive noise control techniques, the results show that the modifications on the trailing edge are the most effective to control the flow. They allow to reduce the pressure fluctuations produced by the recirculation confined inside the cavity and the abrupt ejection of the flow at the trailing edge. As a consequence, the overall sound pressure level can be decreased up to 9dB. Once the model has been validated for an isolated geometry, the application of the same method is extended for a real car geometry. The acoustic radiation to the side window and windshield of a side mirror and A-pillar of a vehicle is shown as an example of the potential of this procedure for aeroacoustic analysis and optimisation of a vehicle straight from the drawing table.

Abstract:
Hybrid composites play a key role in sustainable development. For many years, carbon fibres in an epoxy matrix have been an attractive option for many structural applications because of their higher specific mechanical properties mostly. However, recycling and sustainability are some of the composite shortcomings; and in that context, natural fibres have gained popularity.  The present study aimed to design and manufacture short carbon/flax hybrid composites. Two different arrangements were chosen: random and layers configuration. Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) was used to fabricate these hybrid composites. Mechanical tests and optical microscopy technique were conducted to understand the effect of the interaction of these two different reinforcements. Mechanical tests showed a remarkable difference between the hybrid configurations under flexural loadings. Furthermore, outstanding property values were observed in the hybrid configurations compared to single fibre composites. The resultant materials have seemed an attractive combination of fibres with a remarkable balance between mechanical performance and eco-friendliness.

Full text
Abstract:
Human–Robot Collaboration is a new trend in the field of industrial and service. Application of human-robot-collaboration techniques in automotive industries has many advantages on productivity, production quality and workers’ ergonomic; however, workers’ safety aspects play the vital role during this collaboration. Previously, the machine is allowed to be at automatic work only if operators are out of its workspace but today collaborative robots provide the opportunity to establish the human robot cooperation. In this thesis, efforts have been made to present innovative solutions for using human-robot collaboration to develop a manufacturing cell. These solutions are not only used to facilitate the operator working with collaborative robots but also consider the worker safety and ergonomic. After proposing different solutions for improving the safety of operations during the collaboration with industrial robots, the efficiency of the solutions is tested in both laboratory and virtual environments. In this research, firstly, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been used as a potential decision maker to prove the efficiency of human-robot collaboration system over the manual one. In the second step, detailed task decomposition has been done using Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) to allocate operational tasks to human and robot reducing the chance of duty interference. In the International Organization of Standardization's technical specification 15066 on collaborative robot safety four methodologies have been proposed to reduce the risk of injury in the work area. The four methods implied in ISO/TS 15066 are safety-rated monitored stop (SMS), hand-guided (HG), speed and separation monitoring (SSM) and power force limiting (PFL). SMS method reduces the risk of operator’s injury by stopping the robot motion whenever the operator is in the collaborative workspace. HG method reduces the chance of operator’s injury by providing the possibility of having control over the robot motion at all times in the workstation using emergency system or enabling device. The SSM method determines the minimum protective distance between a robot and an operator in the collaborative workspace, below which the robot will stop any kind of motion and PFL method reduces the momentum of a robot in a way that contact between an operator and the robot will not cause any injury. After determining the requirements and specifications of hybrid assembly cell, few of the above-mentioned methods for evaluating the safety of human-robot-collaboration procedure have been tasted in the laboratory environment. Due to the lack of safety camera (sensors) in the laboratory workstation, the ISO methods such as SSM, that needs sensors in the workstation, have been modeled in virtual environment to evaluate different scenario of human-robot-interaction and feasibility of the assembly process. Implementing different scenarios of ISO methods in hybrid assembly workstation not only improves the operator safety who is in interaction with the collaborative robot but also improves the worker ergonomic during the performing of repetitive heavy tasks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to Industry 4.0 (I4.0) the software ecosystem is constantly changing, and new possibilities and challenges are arising. The purpose of this Master Thesis is to map the software ecosystem in the automotive industry in order to understand the position of Atlas Copco and what gaps an industrial tool supplier can close. In addition, find out what opportunities and challenges that exist in the ecosystem today. Since Industry 4.0 and the software ecosystem are relatively new topics and alters continuously, the study was carried out in an abductive approach and a research design model was created according to that. By combining literature study with empirical study such as interviews, a better understanding was gained which laid the foundation of accumulating a deeper knowledge about the research field and made it feasible to answer the research questions. The current structure in different markets of the software ecosystem are shaped according to an old industry standard for modelling system structures. Differences and similarities between the markets can be found, which explains difficulties in providing software globally. By analysing and combining the current structures for each market, including the answers gained from the conducted interviews, a model was created. A new model for the definition of a software ecosystem in the automotive industry was the result. Additionally, a new way of structuring and visualizing the generic structure of the software ecosystem for Atlas Copco in the Automotive industry was presented as well. The latter model could be used as a tool, that enables a better understanding of the software ecosystem as well as a way to present new solutions to customers. In the ecosystem Atlas Copco takes the role as a premium industrial tool supplier and a provider of software used to configure and monitor quality and errors in the assembly processes. Hence, they broaden their market to become a software supplier. However, thanks to I4.0 technologies, there are potential areas in the production where it is possible for Atlas Copco to extend their establishment further to get more market shares of the software market as well as to provide more value to their customers. Although, the recommendation for Atlas Copco is to shape a reference architecture and focus on software close to the operations of industrial equipment.

Abstract:

The paper examines the investment performance of the world automotive industry using a sample of 21 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) based in three major continents, North America, Europe and Asia between the years 1999 and 2004. The empirical findings suggest that there exists persistent overinvestment not only in the global level but also in the major automotive production regions analyzed. Proving that none of the 3 regions gain returns on investment at least as large as their costs of capital, shareholder wealth is not maximized in the world automotive industry. Europe, among these regions, proves to gain the highest return on investment of its cost of capital. The empirical results also show that the return on investment financed by debt is high around the world and close to 100% of its cost of capital.

Abstract:
Context. Variability management (VM) in automotive domain is a promising solution to reduction of complexity. Feature modeling, as starting point of VM, deals with analysis and representation of available features in terms of commonalities and variabilities. The work is done in the context of an automotive industry – Adam Opel AG. Objectives. This work studies the automotive specific problems with respect to feature modeling, investigates what decomposition and structuring approaches exist in literature, and which one of them satisfies the industrial requirements. The approach to feature modeling is synthesized, evaluated and documented. Methods. In this work a case study with survey and literature review is performed. Survey uses semi structured interview and workshops as data collection methods. Systematic review includes articles from Compendex, Inspec, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Science Direct and Engineering Village. Approach selection is based on mapping requirements against discovered approaches and discussion with industry practitioner on the regular meetings. Evaluation is proposed according to Goal Question Metric paradigm. Results. The approach that can be followed in the case organization is described and evaluated. The reasoning behind feature modeling approach construction and selection can be generalized for other organizations as well. Conclusions. We conclude that there is no perfect approach that would solve all the problems connected to automotive software. However, structuring approaches can be complementary and while combining give a good results. Tool support that integrates into the whole development cycle is important, as the amount of information cannot be processed using simple feature modeling tools. There is a need for further investigation in both directions – tool support and structuring approaches. The tactics that are proposed here should be introduced in organizations and formally evaluated.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this research study is the empirical analysis of theelements affecting supply chain vulnerability with a focus on theautomotive industry. Methodology: This research is based on a deductive approach. In order to fulfilthe purpose of the study, the authors stated three hypotheseswhich were tested with help of quantitative data. Moreover, thesurvey strategy was used while using questioning in order to gatherinformation from subjects. With the help of a web-based questionnairethe data was collected. The collected data was then usedfor statistical analysis, in particular by using a OLS analysis, Mann-Whitney-U-Test and Spearman correlation. By making use of thestatistical results the authors where able to test the stated hypotheses. Research limitations: The research was conducted within only one specific industry, inparticular the automotive industry. Furthermore, the relatively lowamount of 32 respondents must be mentioned. The last imitationof the research study is the missing consideration of any interdependenciesbetween the groups of supply chain practices and supplychain risks. Theoretical Impl: This research represents a contribution to the existing knowledgein field of supply chain risk management and more precisely to thefield of supply chain vulnerability within the automotive industry. As one of the few quantitative research studies that deal with theanalysis of elements affecting supply chain vulnerability, this researchinvestigates statistically the cause-effect relationships, correlationsand differences of elements affecting supply chain vulnerability. Managerial Impl: The results of this study contribute greatly to practitioners withinthe automotive industry. With the help of the comprehensiveSCVM and due to the high degree of detail regarding the supplychain practices and their categorization into source, make and deliverpractices, managers within the various supply chain functionsof a company can easily identify their individual need for actionsbased on the findings of this study.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an Action Research project investigating the use of customers’ perceptions of premium and luxury cars within the premium automotive industry. The research was sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a UK-based automotive manufacturer. An inductive, phenomenological approach was adopted in which JLR’s Premiumness Research Programme (PRP) was used as a case study to build an understanding of the consumer’s perception of luxury, to discover how to communicate this understanding within the business, and to determine how it could be integrated into the NPD process. A passive exploratory study was conducted to understand JLR’s PRP work, to seek new insights about the nature of customer’s reactions when evaluating luxury and premium cars, and to assess JLR’s approach in conducting the PRP. An interventionist descriptive study was conducted to probe for deeper insights into how successful JLR’s research and dissemination process had been within the company, to establish how the wider NPD community interacted with the data, and to develop and test new ideas and tools that enhanced the utility and accessibility of the PRP data. The research generated 58 Research Observations and 36 individual insights that challenged conventional wisdom about how the voice of the customer (VoC) can be captured and used in the NPD process. JLR’s PRP methodology was revealed as a powerful multi-method technique for acquiring data about consumers’ expectations of luxury automotive brands and products, their reactions when evaluating luxury and premium vehicles, and their emotional satisfaction with features and attributes of luxury and premium vehicles. Limitations in JLR’s ability to process and operationalise such data lead to the development of a Premiumness Verbatims Database tool which enabled the wider NPD community to access the PRP knowledge in a safe and meaningful way by considering the translation and utility of subjective VoC data.

Product variety is a trend in many different industries and it is a subject with an increasing relevance to the business and academic arena. The management of product variety must seek to balance the benefits from the marketing perspective with the negative effects, in general, from the operations and logistics perspective, thus becoming a major challenge for industries where product variety is higher, such as the auto industry. This master`s dissertation is an empirical study that aims to quantify, compare and analyze the behavior of the variety of products in the most significant global automobile markets. Passenger cars manufactured by the five largest groups of automakers in the world (Toyota, GM, Volkswagen, Ford and Honda) and variables of product variety in the auto industry such as platforms, brands, models, versions, body type, power-trains, paint & trim, factory fitted options and dealer fitted options were used as objects of study. As a result, it was verified in which point of the supply chain the proliferation of automotive products occurs and the distinct way in which this variety is managed is analyzed in different markets downstream the chain from the car factory.

In the dynamic market, manufacturers constantly seek for optimal channel alignment for maximizing the channel benefits, which needs joint efforts by both manufacturer and channel partners. Driven by their own interests, dealers act very differently in the marketing channel cooperation. To motivate dealers to behave in a more cooperative way, the marketing channel incentive system is commonly used as the most effective tool. However, aiming at maintaining a high marketing channel efficiency in the dynamic market, OEMs need to develop good internal controls and a more scientific approach in adjusting dealer marketing target. In this paper, current channel marketing status in automotive industry will be introduced, conflicts in the marketing channel cooperation will be identified, channel stakeholders will be analyzed to identify the key influencing factors and build a more reasonable MERT adjusting methodology, and finally, recommendations will be provided for manufacturer's in-house executives.

A major element of mobile multimedia, telematics is the convergence of telecommunication and information technology which provides various services to and from the vehicle or mobile communication devices. Telematics is also a new technology which accelerates the rate of technological evolution in the automotive electronics industry. Similar to the United States and Europe, Japan is one of the nations which have advanced automotive technologies. Japanese telematics, however, doesn't have a long history. On the other hand, Japan has unique business circumstances such as highly developed mobile communication technology and contents business. The purpose of this study is to unlock the industrial structure and dynamics of the telematics industry in Japan. In addition, providing indications for building business strategies for telematics players such as automakers, auto suppliers and other industries is another objective. According to the "clockspeed" analysis, telematics clockspeed is much faster than that of automobiles. This situation creates a boundary called clockspeed collision between these two industries. Clockspeed collision will increase market pressure on automakers to provide updated electronic features and to reduce exposure of obsolescence. Clockspeed collision will also significantly affect the business strategies that each player involved in the telematics industry must consider. Value chain analysis illustrates that the telematics industry has a horizontally disintegrated structure. Also the fact that automakers have advantages in the industry is presented. In such situation, the "business double helix" explains that automakers' advantages will be unstable in the future. Namely, the supplier sector in the industry will have significant
(cont.) power. My research shows that telematics industry has already started to move toward a much more vertically integrated structure. These analyses lead to conclusions that each player in the telematics industry must recognize a principle of temporary advantage and that the automotive industry is moving from automobile production to maximizing customer's LTV (Life Time Value).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification of automotive service technicians in independent dealerships enhanced job performance. Descriptive survey methodology was used to gather information for 100 automotive technicians (50 ASE-certified and 50 non-certified technicians) located in 50 different work sites. Each siteâ s service manager was asked to complete a questionnaire and a rating scale for two technicians, one ASE certified and one non-certified. The questionnaire was designed using expert opinions of automotive service managers and community college automotive instructors in the Triad area of North Carolina. The 28-item Minnesota Satisfactoriness Scales (MSS) were used to assess job satisfactoriness. Responses to 95 completed questionnaires and accompanying MSS were included in statistical analyses. The role of these variables in predicting ratings of job performance was further examined by including the regression analyses of only those who had four or less years of on-the-job experience. Among certified technicians, higher scale scores and longer years of experience positively predicted ratings of job performance, as well as decreased numbers of customer complaints. Overall, certified technicians had higher mean job performance ratings than non-certified technicians. Attendance and employee recognition did not significantly predict ratings of job performance in either category of technicians. Results indicated that the number of technicians receiving customer complaints was directly dependent on certification status. Variables such as awards and number of months of perfect attendance had minimal effect on both categories of technician job performance rating.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to illustrate the impact of electrification on the automotive industry and particularly German Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). An introduction to various types of innovation is given in order to highlight the disruptive nature of the electrification of the powertrain. Qualitative interviews with a political representative and representatives of German OEMs were used to analyze the changing environment in the automotive industry. The analysis of the political, competitive, technological and societal environment of the automotive industry shows the major trends that push electrification. Emissions standards, the growing competitive threat from China, technological advancements in the field of battery technology and a shift towards more ecological awareness are major factors that will lead to the widespread adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The results of the interviews were also used to analyze the traditional automotive value chain and to illustrate the changes set off by the process of electrification. The OEMs’ share in total value creation of a BEV will be lower than it currently is for an internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV), if no significant investments are made to build up in-house competencies, e.g. in the field of manufacturing battery cells. The downstream stages of the automotive value chain, however, offer OEMs the chance to tap new business segments and to become mobility service providers.

Abstract:
In a competitive environment, ensuring to provide high quality can be considered as one of the key objectives of the organizations. For guaranteeing that, the firms should communicate efficiently regarding quality, in order to influence the consumers´ perception towards quality. A high perception of quality requires a strong brand, which should guide the consumers in their choice and let them to refuse the competitors. Among the different strategies that can be put in place by the firms, co-branding is a joint strategy that is trying to combine the value of both brands in a synergy effect. Ingredient branding is a type of branding that entails the use of a component from one brand in a product of another brand, moreover these stimuli that are influencing the consumers´ behaviour. This stimulus will impact the quality perception of the brand and the consumers´ willingness of choosing the brand, therefore the brand would be preferred to other brands and make the consumer be loyal to the host brand. This study was conducted by employing a quantitative approach based on an experimental design with a focus on the automotive industry. A survey was distributed among students and young professionals, which are considered as actual or prospective car buyers. A total of 116 responses contributed to the sample of this research. The findings show that an ingredient brand with high perceived quality can increase the perceived quality of the host brand and that the increased quality of the host brand can lead to brand loyalty.

This thesis examines International IJVs and the conditions that contribute to their success. The original contribution to knowledge of his thesis is the identification of Trust, the Parent Relationship and Long-Term Commitment as conditions most likely to foster successful IJVs. This thesis showed the applicability of these conditions to IJVs in the automotive sector and also demonstrates the dependency of each condition to the other by identifying a sequential order with which the conditions These conditions are established through interviewing senior management from both parents and the internal management of 13 successful IJVs in the automotive industry. The thesis is divided into a qualitative and quantitative analysis. Key themes from the respondent s qualitative views of success are extracted, coded and then analysed to provide robust empirical results. The data acquired from the respondents is analysed using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The conditions leading to success are the parent s relationship, the level of trust that exists between the parents and their long-term commitment to the IJV.

Abstract:

Hosking, Niamh C. "Next generation corrosion protection for the automotive industry." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14514/.

Full text
Abstract:
Vehicle bodies are generally constructed from galvanized steel, which, together with phosphate and e-coat paint treatments, ensures corrosion resistance. The use of these materials alone cannot provide adequate corrosion protection to certain features that are inherent to vehicle body construction but are also vulnerable to corrosion, such as cut edges of panels and creviced joints. The use of further corrosion protection measures, (e.g. sealers, lacquers and waxes), is undesirable because they require additional manufacturing processes, increase weight and reduce recyclability of the vehicle. The potential benefits of using zinc-magnesium alloy coated steel (ZMG) as a substitute for conventional galvanized steel were investigated in this work. Cyclic corrosion testing in sodium chloride and acid rain-based environments was conducted on panels of ZMG and conventional galvanized steel and the resistance of each material to red rust initiation and propagation was assessed. ZMG offered approximately a 3-fold improvement in red rust resistance compared to galvanized steel in the sodium chloride test but ZMG's corrosion benefit was attenuated in the acid rain environment. Cyclic corrosion testing was also conducted on painted test panels incorporating geometric features; enhanced edge and crevice corrosion resistance was also observed for panels constructed from ZMG. Corrosion products formed in each environment were characterized using a suite of analysis techniques and mechanisms to explain the enhanced corrosion resistance of ZMG were proposed based on these products and on the literature. An inhibiting corrosion protection mechanism was suggested for ZMG whereby cathodic activity was retarded via the precipitation of insulating, sparingly soluble magnesium hydroxide. Further inhibition of cathodic activity has been attributed to the specific oxide layer (possibly magnesium oxyhydroxide doped with zinc) present at the ZMG surface. The observed efficacy of the corrosion protection mechanisms suggests that ZMG may allow improvement of the vehicle body corrosion protection system for vehicle weight and recyclability targets.

Eost, Charlotte L. "Capturing ergonomics requirements in the global automotive industry." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1999. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7602.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the issues surrounding the collection and dissemination of customer ergonomics requirements in the automotive industry. The aim of the research is to develop a Toolset of methods, known as the Lifestyle Scenario Toolset, for gathering customer requirements in overseas markets, and for presenting the information collected to design teams, taking a user-centred design approach. The Toolset was developed and evaluated with the co-operation of employees from a major UK automotive company. Four studies were conducted, the first comprised a series of interviews to establish the needs of both the data gatherers and data users for a Toolset of methods to collect and communicate overseas customer information. The data gatherers were drawn from the company's Market Researchers, Ergonomists and people responsible for the company's overseas operations. The data users were the design team responsible for the development of the company's next generation 4X4 vehicle. Results showed that the data collection tools which formed part I of the Toolset should be quick to use, require no ergonomics expertise to implement and be cost effective to use. The interviews with data users identified the need for tools which could communicate customer ergonomics requirements to them in a way which fitted in with their current working practices. In addition the tools needed to communicate information in language which was familiar to the design team, and be visually based where possible. The second study explored the development of suitable data collection tools for inclusion in the Lifestyle Scenario Toolset. Building on the needs identified in the first study together with information from the current literature a number of data collection tools were developed for inclusion in part I of the Lifestyle Scenario Toolset. These tools were a questionnaire, driving diary and photographs, focus group, ergonomics audit and background information tool. The tools were designed to collect a range of different data types, e.g. qualitative, quantitative, pictorial and customer verbatims, to provide a rich picture of users and their activities. The tools were used in a field trial to collect data from overseas customers about their ergonomics requirements and the tasks they carried out using their vehicle, in the context of their lifestyle. The third study focused on the development of a set of tools to communicate the data collected in part 1 of the Toolset, to the design team who would use it in their work. The data communication tools were developed to provide information to design teams at a number of levels, enabling them to use the data at an appropriate level for their needs. High level summaries of each of the tools were developed and scenarios presented on storyboards were used to integrate information from all of the data collection tools to provide detailed information about customers' ergonomics requirements and lifestyle. The data communication tools also used a variety of data types and presentation mediums, such as pictures, graphs and customer quotes to increase the richness of the data presented. The fourth study involved the evaluation of the suitability of the Toolset for collecting and communicating overseas customer ergonomics requirements. The data gatherers, and data users (design team) carried out a field trial using the Toolset to establish its usefulness to them in their work. The results of the evaluation showed that the data gatherers found the Toolset easy to implement and were able to use it to pick up overseas customers ergonomics requirements. The communication tools were able to provide the design team with new and useful customer ergonomics information, in a range of formats which they felt comfortable using in their work. The implementation of a user-centred design approach to the development of methods for collecting and communicating overseas customer ergonomics requirements enabled the creation of a Toolset which met the needs of the people who will use it. This increased its acceptance by people in the company and thus the likelihood of the Lifestyle Scenario Toolset's continued use within the company.

Abstract:
Collaborative robots have many advantages and have proven to be useful, although there are still currently very few actual implementations of collaborative robots on the industrial shop-floors. One major reason for this is the high safety requirements within the industry and the difficulties to fulfil current safety regulations when using collaborative robots. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the most important safety aspects in collaborative robot applications and to discuss how different solutions can aid in fulfilling current safety regulations. In order to fulfil the purpose, a physical demonstrator will be developed in collaboration with Volvo Cars Engine that can be used for evaluation and testing. To investigate what the general opinion of the automotive industries thoughts are on collaborative robots, a questionnaire based survey was conducted with 143 participants. The survey result show that the majority thinks that collaborative robots can benefit them in their own work, and that assembly- and material handling tasks is well suited applications for collaborative robots. The literature review of the thesis project is focused on collaborative robot safety peripherals for minimizing injury by collisions, but also to investigate other related work with collaborative robots. Input from the survey and the literature review clarifies the problem at hand and tentative idea of a physical demonstrator is suggested. The demonstrator which resembles an industrial assembly station with bolt tightening, has been created using a light weight structure UR10 robot from Universal Robots. Together with the operator, a work sequences was proposed for both the human and the robot, and once implemented, three optional scenarios where recorded for evaluation. By observing the recordings it is identified that a seamless workflow can be achieved even though the robot and human works in the same area and on the same work piece. Other benefits include improved ergonomics and reduction of operator physical fatigue. To evaluate the demonstrator further, experiments with test- and control groups were proposed as future work.

Abstract:
Existing methods of joining automotive aluminium alloys are either expensive (Self Pierce Rivets) or di cult to implement (Resistance Spot Welding). Ultrasonic spot welding (USW) is a new alternative method using ~2% of the energy of resistance spot welding. USW is a solid state welding process that combines vibration and pressure at the interface of a joint to produce a weld. Much of the existing research focuses testing under laboratory conditions, using simple coupon sample geometry, and has proven to be an extremely robust process. This thesis shows a detailed investigation into the implementation of USW on automotive body panels, in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover. Weld performance, bonding mechanisms and temperature gradients found in AA5754 align well with other research conducted using 6XXX series aluminium alloys. A laboratory trial was completed to verify all joints could be achieved on a Jaguar XJ dash panel, followed by installation of a USW machine in a production cell. A detailed statistical analysis was performed on strength and sticking data gathered from 60 Jaguar XJ dash panels that were welded in the trial. Results showed difficulty to apply USW in certain areas of the panel, although previous trials had suggested it was possible. A collaboration with Ford Motor Company allowed research to be conducted at the Ford Research and Innovation Center. Experiments were designed to discover which elements of the USW equipment had the most profound effect on weld strength, and a full factorial Design of Experiments was produced to and the most effective method of reducing variation in weld strength. Results showed that the vibrational response of complex geometry parts makes USW very difficult to predict, making it difficult to successfully implement in the automotive industry.

Abstract:
The automotive industry is in a period of significant change with different emerging technologies trying to impact the industry. It is in a time where the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, opens up opportunities for OEMs to improve their products and services with the help of transitioning towards Asset Performance Management (APM 4.0). This master thesis has identified various OEMs values with the help of the framework Value Mapping Tool to help the companies capitalize on these opportunities. The values were divided into the following subvalues; Value Captured, Value Missed, and Value Opportunities. OEMs have to adapt their existing business models with the help of business model innovation to improve the identification of values further and stay competitive or gain competitive advantages. Literature regarding the current state of the automotive industry and transitioning towards APM 4.0 has been combined with findings from six semi-structured interviews. The findings are based on interviews with employees with different positions from various automotive companies in Sweden. Furthermore, the findings and the literature have been compared to three benchmarking studies of similar research in Germany, China, and the USA to gain an overall view of the problem. The missed values are characterized by Complexity, Ambiguity, and Knowledge. Moreover, the values captured show that new business models are needed due to the market rapidly transforming but companies lacking knowledge on how to capture value. The complexity concerns the new complex technologies arriving as well as the high level of uncertainties rising with the introduction of APM 4.0. The ambiguities indicate the problems the automotive companies have with searching for information since they do not know what to expect. The knowledge refers to knowledge gained during the process of implementing APM 4.0 in order to identify valuable unexplored data. Nonetheless, the study also led to finding potential value opportunities despite the lack of knowledge and a high level of uncertainty. There are unexplored business models which can improve the manufacturing processes for the automotive companies. Project benchmarking has shown positive signs but still has not reached its full potential due to low amounts of tests. The study concludes that many clear obstacles hinder a successful implementation of APM 4.0 within the Swedish automotive industry. In order for the automotive companies to optimize the implementation, they have to capture value relevant to their business model.

Abstract:
The quality of a product depends on the quality of the underlying process is a well known fact. Software development organizations have been struggling to decrease their cost, increase their ROI, reduce time-to-market, and enhance the quality of their products. This all depends upon the improvement in the processes they are following inside their organizations. A number of software process improvement models exist in market, e.g., CMMI, SPICE and Automotive SPICE. But before an organization can improve its development and management processes, it is very important to know whether it is following the right processes. There exist a number of software development process models, mainly categorized into Traditional and Agile, which provide the step-by-step guidance to develop and manage the software projects. The current thesis presents a study of software process improvement models in automotive industry, their weaknesses and strengths and presents a comparison of how do they relate to each other. This thesis also explores some software development models which are more famous in automotive industry, and the applicability of process improvement models in conjunction with the Agile software development models. A case study was performed at an automotive software supplier organization to investigate the experience of combining Agile practices with organization’s company-tailored software development model that was incorporating Automotive SPICE standards.

Abstract:
This study deals with a very common problem encountered in many automotive industries. Automotive companies try to level the production of different models over time based on the demands for these models in the market. In order to achieve this, they introduce a leveled stream of cars in the beginning of the production line. But because of many reasons this leveled stream gets disturbed in its course. In order to re-level the stream, buffers are used between the shops. One such buffer is called as selectivity bank and it sits between paint shop and assembly shop. This buffer receives a disturbed sequence from the paint shop. The thesis tries to develop different algorithms that can be used to discharge cars from this buffer in order to achieve better leveling in the presence of rework and assembly constraints. These algorithms continuously try to steer the system from an undesirable state to a more desirable state by keeping track of current conditions in the plant. A simulation model is developed, which gives a platform for comparing relative performance of these logics under different conditions. The simulation tool is also helpful in designing optimum size of this buffer that will result in desired leveling performance.

Abstract:
The South African motor industry is currently at the height of competitiveness, whether referring to new or pre-owned vehicles. The sale of new vehicles is at an all time high, and this phenomenon flows through to the remarket sector in the industry. The prices of new vehicles increased by very small margins over the past few years, and in some instances it has decreased. This leads to even more intense competition in the remarket sector, because consumers would rather purchase a new vehicle, than paying a very similar price for the exact pre-owned model. This study was conducted to determine on which factors a remarket dealership should focus in order to remain successful in the current fierce competitive market conditions. A literature study forms part of this study. Questionnaires were used as the measuring instrument and also filled out by 140 participants in an attempt to determine which factors the consumer considers as important when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle. Data analysis was done by means of a factor analysis, and the data reliability verified by means of determining Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. A total of seven factors were identified of which "Value for money” and "Reassurance” was the most important ones. Cumulatively the factors explained 61 % of the variance.

Kang, Hai-zhuang. "Assessment of paint appearance quality in the automotive industry." Thesis, Brunel University, 2000. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7900.

Full text
Abstract:
In the modern automotive industry, more and more manufacturers recognise that vehicle paint appearance makes an important contribution to customer satisfaction. Attractive appearance has become one of the important factors for customers in making a decision to purchase a car. Objective measurement of the quality of autobody paint appearance, as perceived by the customer, in a repeatable, reproducible, continuous scale manner is an important requirement for improving the paint appearance. It can provide car manufacturers a standard reference to evaluate the quality of the paint appearance. This thesis mainly deals with the measurement of paint appearance quality in the automotive industry by investigating, identifying and developing measurement methods in this area. First of all, the 'state of the art' in the area of paint appearance measurement was presented, which summarised the concept of appearance, models, attributes and definitions. To further identify the parameters and instruments used in the automotive industry, a round robin test was launched to perform visual assessment and instrument measurements on a set of panels in some European car manufacturers. A summary of the correlation found between measurable parameters and visual assessment provided the basis of the further work. Based on the literature survey and round robin test results, the next work is mainly concentrated on the two most important parameters, 'orange peel' and 'metal texture effect', how to separate and evaluate them. Digital signal processing technique, FFT and Filtering, have been employed to separate them and a set of measures have been provided for evaluation. At the same time, the technique for texture pattern recognition was introduced to evaluate the texture effect when a fine texture comparison was needed. A set of computable textural parameters based on grey-tone spatial-dependence matrices gives good correlation directly corresponding to visual perception. To resolve the overall appearance modelling problem, two novel and more powerful modelling tools, artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic, are introduced to model the overall appearance. The test results showed that both of them are able to reflect the correlation between overall appearance and the major parameters measured from a painted surface. Finally, an integrated measurement system, 'Smart Appearance', was developed using the image processing techniques and the artificial neural network model. The implement results show that this system can measure the major attributes of paint appearance and provide an overall appearance index corresponding to human visual perception. This system is helpful to product quality control on car body paint. It also could be used on the paint production line for dynamic measurement.
