Full textThe purpose of my thesis, realized in collaboration with VALEO, is to develop advanced driver assistance systems to increase safety and comfor t in vehicles. To summarize, it is to develop algorithms of a longitudinal control such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allowing to follow in real time with a safety a leading vehicle and more generally strategies to lower Speed (Stop&Go) for the evolution of vehicle in urban environments. At low speed, it should also consider the problem of parallel parking assistance. First of all, the longitudinal control algorithms (ACC and Stop &Go) were studied. In order to increase system robustness against measurement noise, neglected external dynamics such as the slope of the road, rolling resistance and aerodynamic forces, etc. , as well as uncer tainties related to the engine/brake model, an unfied algebraic approach for estimation and model-free control is applied. Regarding the low-speed automation of parallel parking, we proposed a general solution based on a geometric approach. Our local planner can generate a geometric path consisting of circular arcs of minimum radius and straight lines for a parking space whose length is greater than the diagonal of the vehicle. It should be noted that our method is independent of the initial position of the vehicle if its initial position is parallel to the parking lot. An algorithm for geometric path planning of the parallel parking problem according to the length of the parking space was also developed. A theoretical study of the complexity of our method in terms of the number of maneuvers shows that it requires less maneuvers than classical methods in practical cases

Full textFar beyond the appearances, the motor-car clubs of prestige in France are cultural spaces open to an heterogeneous public of fans, who come to share the same passion for an identical model. The participants, members or only followers, gather around cars that have marked the social history. The mythical character of those modern tribes is preciously maintained by the ritual habit of organizing runs out. The clubmen keep this non-material patrimony by means of huge gatherings during which they bring back the events that promoted the motor-car up to the rank of an Object of prestige, a sacralised Object. The club is the motor-car memorial; it is, altogether, the space for practicing dynamics and passionate bursts. The memory of events linked to motor-cars and childhood, witch we define as the custom "ethos" of nostalgy, feed their passion, also shared by women, the third millenium drivers. The relationship to the Object is an intimate one. The purpose of the clubs is to transmit a car culture, and also to preserve this industrial patrimony by means of a custom which consists in motoring

Marketing alternative fueled vehicles is a difficult challenge for automakers. The foundation of the market, the terms of competition, and the customer segments involved are still being defined. But automakers can draw lessons from other industries, previous examples, and recent launches of the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf to help guide them. Automakers can deploy new marketing tools to advance their understanding of the market, define the terms of competition, and listen in to their customers' needs. These new tools can help reduce the risk and uncertainty involved with launching new products like alternative fueled vehicles. This thesis explores the major issues in marketing alternative fueled automobiles in several major parts. First it will look at the major drivers of alternative fueled vehicles and historical examples such as the Prius. While the market continues to change with each year, some trends emerge as key to defining the future of the industry. Second, it will look at the current strategic environment for alternative fueled vehicles, including an exploration of the various fuel types and vehicle offerings. Third, it will offer lessons learned for manufacturers based on the case study work done with two automotive manufacturers on real-life launches of a plug-in hybrid and a hydrogen vehicle. Some classical marketing frameworks, such as the innovation cycle, are used to help understand current puzzles, and new tools, such as semantic/perceptual maps, are used to help understand how open questions might be resolved in the next few years. Finally, it will explore a novel modeling tool developed for assessing potential adoption rates for alternative fueled vehicles by looking at costs and profits from both the owners and automakers' perspective.

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to systematically develop a continuative concept of driver-automobile cooperation, to evaluate its suitability on the basis of empirical data, and to value its provable potential in relation to existing approaches.Assumptions and premises regarding the human-machine interaction constitute the starting point of this work. The decisive altercation and notional differentiation of cooperation are explained in just this context, leading logically to a definitional demarcation of existing approaches, the demand of a specific role understanding of the interaction as well as the derivation of conceptual basic conditions. The structural and procedural characteristics of this specific interaction are then elaborated upon and used to identify the general attributes of cooperation between driver and automobile. In the following, such indicators are derived by which the implied profit as a result of cooperation between driver and automobile can be controlled and valued. Within the framework of several preliminary investigations, those driving situations were identified that would profit most from a cooperative interaction between driver and automobile. As a result, the two driving scenarios "Overtaking on Highways" and "Turning Left on Urban and Country Roads with Oncoming Traffic" were utilized in the experiments. Both single scenarios have been compared in independent experiments with regard to alternative system variants. The prove of specific hypotheses was embedded in the prototypical surroundings of a driving simulator. Finally, the possibility of establishing and embedding this interaction concept into the overall socio-technical context will be presented, and future perspectives will be discussed.

Full textSimulators are used for many different purposes, among them physical rehabilitation and the training of differently abled learner-drivers. In South Africa, however, the extent of the latter type of simulators is limited to paraplegic learner-drivers only. The reason is that locally sourcing the necessary equipment to adapt commercial simulators for the training of differently abled learner-drivers presents a problem. The concept of Universal Design stipulates that as many individuals as possible should be able to use a particular product. Consequently, a simulator for differently abled learner-drivers should accommodate as many such persons as possible. However, applying Universal Design in the area of design researched for the present dissertation adds further complexity due to the unique nature of the physical limitations experienced by individuals. A differently abled driver puts an extreme constraint on the design of a product - and becomes a limiting user. Nevertheless, this dissertation adopts a Universal Design approach to investigate the possibility of designing such a simulator in South Africa, as well as its viability. A limiting user was included in the research to represent the bigger differently abled community. Field research was carried out by implementing a Participatory Design process. Furthermore, a team was selected according to a Meta-Design mind-set, including professionals from engineering, clinical psychology and occupational therapy. The leader and researcher was an industrial designer.

Full textPowertrain driveability is considered as one of the most important customer requirement of a vehicle. In fact, in a more and more competitive market, any car manufacturer tries to distinguish himself by improving the driving pleasure felt by its customer. However, the consideration of the powertrain driveability during the vehicle design cycle is not coarse because this customer requirement is a consequence of the optimisation of the global vehicle and not only of each subsystems (motor, gearbox,. . . ). The aim of this research concerns the use of dynamical modelling, analysis and simplification tools in order to herlp vehicle conception engineering departments to optimise the powertrain driveability. This work proposes more complex vehicle models. Based on a bibliographical study concerning representations of the various subsystems influencing the powetrain driveability, a complete vehicle model is built. For every studied sub-performance (tip-in or tip-out, takeoff, and gearshift), various proper models are proposed. The use of modelling and analysis tools like activity index of each energetic elements of the system (inertia, stiffness, dissipation) permits to select the good model complexity level to simulate the studied phenomena. Generated models enable not only to reproduce vehicle behaviours in agreement with our experimental results but also to analyse and to put in focus phenomena like interaction between the driveline dynamic, powertrain movements and wheel horizontal suspension. Moreover, influence of conception parmeters of various sub-systems can be study with the use of those proper models. An analysis of global dynamic behaviours of the vehicle is then performed. Finally, this study improves the comptetitiveness and of engineering departments by bringing better understantig of the global vehicle behaviour in upstream phase of vehicle design cycle
