Abstract:
Crude oil resources in the world continue to diminish; automobile, agricultural machinery and construction machinery manufacturing companies are placing more emphasis on energy efficient series hydraulic hybrid systems which can replace their conventional transmission systems. Series hydraulic hybrid system is a mechatronics system with two source of power (that includes prime mover and hydro-pneumatic accumulator) which drives the vehicle. Even though, it has been proven as an energy efficient system, sizing of the components or sub-system for automobiles has got a major influence on energy efficiency of vehicle. In this paper, a power bond graph approach is used to model the dynamics of series hydraulic hybrid system and simulation results elucidate various modes of operations. It also shows the dynamic response of hydro-pneumatic accumulator, prime-mover and system output speed. Further, design optimization of system is carried out to optimize the physical /process parameters for the maximum system's output energy that, leads to increase in energy efficiency and environmental friendly vehicle.

Abstract:
Commendable progress has been made in recent years in the application of metric dimensions and standards to the design and construction of U.S. road and highway systems and affected industries. The metrication experience of other U.S. industries has clearly shown that the rates of assimilation and adaptation to a change in measurement system correlate closely with the extent of technical background of those directly involved. In less than a decade and with very limited difficulty, the entire U.S. automobile industry changed to the use of the metric system throughout its vast network of design, manufacturing, and service organizations. Remarkably, that elaborate changeover yielded almost no public outcry because of the excellent strategy used by the industry. Use of the metric system was given a very low level of publicity because very few retail customers were affected. Beyond p-metric tire designations and mile-kilometer speed indications, few consumers were aware then, or are concerned today, that their automobiles, like all others worldwide, are manufactured entirely to metric dimensions and standards. A similar strategy is now being effectively pursued in that part of the construction industry responsible for major buildings. For all the same reasons and to the fullest extent possible, that strategy should be continued in the metrication of U.S. highway design, construction, and systems management.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to reduce the unsprung mass, the moment of inertia of the racing automobile’s wheel while maintaining the necessary strength due to the using of composite materials in its construction. Currently, the composite materials have been obtained a widespread usage as structural materials in the automobile assemblies and units. Particularly, the using of modern composite materials in the transmission elements of the automobile, such as drive shafts, axle shafts or wheels, makes it possible to substantially improve the performances of the wheeled vehicle: reduce the full and the unsprung weight. It is possible to point out from the modern composite materials, the polymeric composite materials having carbon fibers as a reinforcing element, which are possessing a low density and the best combining a high level of specific strength with producibility of the products. The object of the research is the racing automobile’s wheel which belongs to the class of “Formula Student”. The usage of composite materials in the construction of similar wheels, as well as the estimated evaluation of the wheel’s strength during its manufacturing from composite materials are discussed. The regulations of the competitions permit a great freedom in choosing the wheel construction. The estimated strength evaluation was carried out by the finite element method, the original finite element wheel model was developed for this purpose taking into account the anisotropic properties of the reinforced materials. The computational investigation of the strength of the selected construction showed that the rim which is made of the composite material has an excessive safety factor at the design loads. The proposed constructive decision allows to reduce the wheel weight by 33% (up to 1.68 kg) in comparison with the one-piece wheel made of magnesium alloys (2.5 kg).

Abstract:
The main purpose of this project is to carry the five hundred to seven hundred load short distances. The problem identified is automobile vehicles used to transfer goods for short duration, everywhere. On the other hand, automobile fuel cost has increased abruptly. Due to rises in fuel cost, it is directly and indirectly affected by the cost of living. That means it directly raises all items' cost rise such as vegetable prices, construction materials, cosmetics, etc. On the other hand, automobile vehicles produce more pollutants in the environment. The main object of this paper is to design the fabrication of load-carry electrical vehicles. In the exciting electrical vehicle, auto-rickshaw cost is too high it cannot be afforded by average and below average people. The drawback of the exciting vehicle is the carriage covers 20% of the total load. In the proposed method design weightless carriage and more space as well comfort to carry the load on short as well long distances. The main merit of the proposed method are to reduce the 40% cost compared to the market price. The proposed fabrication 3D diagram and practical implementation as detailed in the following paragraph.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Industrial Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
Simulators are used for many different purposes, among them physical rehabilitation and the training of differently abled learner-drivers. In South Africa, however, the extent of the latter type of simulators is limited to paraplegic learner-drivers only. The reason is that locally sourcing the necessary equipment to adapt commercial simulators for the training of differently abled learner-drivers presents a problem. The concept of Universal Design stipulates that as many individuals as possible should be able to use a particular product. Consequently, a simulator for differently abled learner-drivers should accommodate as many such persons as possible. However, applying Universal Design in the area of design researched for the present dissertation adds further complexity due to the unique nature of the physical limitations experienced by individuals. A differently abled driver puts an extreme constraint on the design of a product - and becomes a limiting user. Nevertheless, this dissertation adopts a Universal Design approach to investigate the possibility of designing such a simulator in South Africa, as well as its viability. A limiting user was included in the research to represent the bigger differently abled community. Field research was carried out by implementing a Participatory Design process. Furthermore, a team was selected according to a Meta-Design mind-set, including professionals from engineering, clinical psychology and occupational therapy. The leader and researcher was an industrial designer.

The research field of this work is Industrial Engineering. This paper presents a study made to improve tomorrow’s automobile cabin habitability. It is focused on showing the influence on car-interior design by today’s home-interior design. The objective of this work is to propose a tool intended to help automobile designers to introduce home architectural construction principles into the car’s cabin design to improve its habitability. In our experimental phase we adopted principles of the method of analysis of the joint tendencies such as mappings and boards of categorization. This step showed that car designers have been increasingly using the home architectural construction principles on the car’s cabin conception design. Our research took into account the opinion of experts in both areas: architecture and design. In this way, we can be certain that the home and the automobile share the same criteria of habitability. We could also confirm that home architectural principles have a positive impact on the improvement of the habitability criteria in space design of the automobile’s cabin. This work opens a research line to analyze the influence of different areas in automobile design, such as aeronautics and electronics. This study can also show the inverse perspective of how car design can eventually have an impact on the future home design

Abstract:
In the last few years, extreme competition between car manufacturers led to higher quality and safety standards, and reduction of costs and delays in product development. Together with technical and regulation evolutions, this caused the design of vehicle subsystems to become more and more constraint. In such a context, designers who want to meet customer requirements have to take the robustness of their products into account, even at early stages of the design process. Indeed, due to the variability of the product itself (in terms of geometrical or mechanical properties, of assembly or ageing of components), or its operating conditions, the stability of the announced performance levels has to be specified and guaranteed, in presence of uncertainty. In addition to high numbers of design variables, constraints and objectives, this ‘robust design’ requires a numerical simulation of this uncertainty. Therefore, a reliable, hierarchized and computationally efficient methodology that fully complies with the V-diagram of Systems Engineering is needed. The First Design methodology is one possible approach. It was successfully used in previous works. The aim of the present thesis is to extend some of its features, and apply it to the robust optimization of the ‘level 5’ functional architecture of automotive suspension systems: front and rear axle design parameters and primary variables of the tires. For this purpose, models and associated tools for optimization and computer-aided decision have to be developed in order to define a global and reliable procedure for the specification of these systems, with a fully integrated and quantified notion of the robustness. The proposed technique, partly relying on physical simplified models and sensitivity estimators directly integrated in the used optimization algorithms, improved the robustness of the solutions significantly, and emphasized the performance gains achieved by taking the presence of semi-active components into account, at early phases of the project

Spell, Sabine. "Japanese automobile lobbying in Brussels : the role of the Japanese motor car industry in EU policy networks." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2390.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the lobbying by the Japanese automobile industry in the European Union. It investigates how the Japanese automobile industry interacts with the decision-making authorities in Brussels in its attempts to influence the policy process of the European Union. In the post-war period the Japanese automobile industry has expanded into all major world markets and plays an important economic and political role in these. However, until the 1990s, the Japanese automobile industry enjoyed hardly any interaction with the policy making institutions of the European Union. This has changed dramatically in the last decade but, thus far, the process has not been subject to any empirical investigation. This study, which is largely based upon interviews with the major actors in the process of interaction between the governing institutions and the automobile industry in the EU, aims to correct this deficiency. This thesis employed the policy network concept as a framework to develop an understanding of this particular case of government-interest group interaction. The thesis investigated whether the Western concept of policy networks could successfully be applied to the Japanese automobile industry as a non-western actor in the unique system of governance of the EU. By doing so, the thesis has demonstrated that the policy network concept is not a purely Western construct, but can be applied with equal validity to the case of Japan. Therefore, this thesis has taken an importani. a step towards proving the universal applicability of the policy network concept.

Mignerey, Renaud. "Designer les interactions humain-monde pour susciter des émotions positives : application à l’automobile." Thesis, Compiègne, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019COMP2503/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In a context of strong competition and regulatory pressures, the vehicles on the market share common characteristics. Even though emotions elicited by the driving experience are a powerful lever for differentiation, manufacturers mainly attach the affective dimension to the stylistic properties of their vehicles. They only consider innovations in a functional perspective and offer their customers similar services without regarding the relational factor underlying the use of a vehicle. However, the literature highlights the importance of the emotional dimension of social relations, which in our opinion represents an opportunity for the Renault Group to differentiate itself by proposing a new driving experience based on interactions between drivers. We began our work with an observation field. Our purpose was to determine the conditions and levers establishing a relationship between road users. On the basis of the first results valuing the mutual perception of two drivers, we carried out a minimalist experiment comparing two modes of perception, namely the perceptive information and theperceptual activity, within the framework of a collaborative action. This study emphasizes the crucial role of interpersonal dynamics on the mechanisms of social understanding: the results show the interest, from an emotional point of view, of accessing to what the other is attentive to. We then used these results to design a device for perception and interaction purposes and we studied its role in the emergence of positive emotions when driving. Through a simulator experiment, we have been able to bring out a new type of driving experience resulting from the manipulation of this device. This thesis is based on a theoretical principle put to the test in a field experiment involving road users. We follow an iterative process specific to a research-project approach. We propose a conceptual realization that is not a purpose but a prerequisite. Based on the fact that driving is in itself a social interaction, we suggest ideas for the design of a new feature integrated into the vehicle which arouses positive emotions between drivers

Thesis, Paris, ENSAM, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014ENAM0065/document.

Abstract:
Electric and hybrid vehicles are particularly attractive. They offer several advantages, but at a high cost, which explains their current limited success. The purpose of this work is to contribute to the cost reduction of lithium-ion batteries, the main cost factor in electric vehicles. For the evaluation of cost reduction solutions, a clear and detailed comprehension of the structure of the battery cost is required. A complete environment for the cost modelling of cells for lithium ion batteries has also been developed: two cost models and two databases. This environment is made in order to precisely calculate the cost of a battery using the design parameters. Since there are uncertainties surrounding the cost modelling, an innovative method for the assessment of this uncertainty has also been developed. Using the cost model, several ways of improvement for lithium-ion batteries have been detected and quantified. Thus, a way to reduce the cost evaluated in this work is concerned with a design parameter neglected in the literature: the electrode coating thickness. This model has also confirmed a point already suggested on several papers: the preponderance of active materials on overall cost of lithium-ion batteries. To understand the reasons behind this fact, a cost model for active materials has been developed. New ways of cost reduction have been highlighted with this model. Finally, this work proposes for the first time a complete modelling of cells for lithium-ion batteries, detailed up to materials precursors. It also indicates several ways to reduce the cost of these batteries. This work gives to the community a comprehensive view on the cost structure, essential for the optimization of lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:
In modern industrial applications like automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding, and aircraft construction. Aluminum alloy is employed to obtain a cost favorable, corrosion-resistant, and weight optimized body which provides a high stiffness. This paper aims to find the influence of Process parameters like welding current, Filler rod diameter, and Gas flow rate on tensile strength of TIG welded AA6082 alloy using ER 4047 filler wire and argon as a shielding gas. Tensile properties of welded specimen were determined as per ASTM E8 Standard. The process parameters of the TIG welded butt joint of AA6082 plates were optimized using the Taguchi method. L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi design of experiments was taken to perform experiments using MINITAB software to find the parameter which provides the best ultimate tensile strength for butt welded joint of aluminum 6082 alloy. The maximum value of tensile strength comes out to be 184 MPa. Residual stress of welded specimen was also investigated at optimized process 1parameter. The purpose of this document is to serve as a resource for selecting right parameters for welding of AA6082 to save time and cost.

Abstract:
The laws of unsaturated and capillary movement of water in soils are analyzed, which are complex and insufficiently studied, but significantly affect the condition of the ground. Experience in the design and construction of the subsoil has shown that during the excavation works can significantly change the conditions of soils and their water-thermal regime. Therefore, the characteristics of soils used in stability calculations should be determined taking into account the subsequent condition of the soil in the conditions of occurrence, as well as the possible change of these conditions during construction and maintenance. One of the urgent tasks is to improve the methods of regulating the water-thermal regime of roads. By changing the conditions of its course or the type of water-thermal regime itself, significant successes can be achieved in improving the maintenance of roads, engineering and transport facilities. Dangerous effect of these factors on the embankment of the ground is manifested in the formation of wetting, wetting of the soil and layers of pavement, resulting in reduced density, strength of soils, subsidence, swelling and loss of continuity due to cracking. As a result, the strength of the road structure, the flatness of the carriageway, the durability of the pavement and the adhesion of the wheels to the roadway are reduced. The most dangerous for roads are moisture accumulation, freezing, thawing of the ground, intensive heating and intensive cooling of the layers of pavement. The analysis of regularities of formation of a water-thermal regime of a ground and its regulation at the expense of the device of optimum capillary-interrupting layers is carried out. The laws of soil moisture when raising capillary water showed that when the layer of the embankment with a high coefficient of impregnation is dehydrated over the layer with a lower coefficient, the speed of moving capillary water into the upper soil layers drops sharply. This fall occurs as a result of changes in the relationship between the driving forces of the menisci and the forces of resistance of capillary water in the soil. The process of unsaturated movement of water in the soil is determined by the combination of many factors that characterize the capillary system of the soil. The calculation uses complex indicators of soil water movement conditions, which are established experimentally for each variety and soil density at optimal humidity, as well as water filtration coefficients in the soil. To establish the relationship between these experimental data and the required values that determine the capillary system of the soil, the filtration of water in the soil was considered. Determining the optimal capillary system of the soil and establishing the unstable distribution of own capillary water in the structures of high embankments will ensure the strength of approaches to road bridges. The method of calculating the determination of the optimal composition of the road layers taking into account the processes of water-thermal regime and capillary movement of water has been improved. The algorithm of calculation in the program Microsoft Excel for selection of optimum structure of a ground cloth of a high embankment on approaches to automobile bridges is offered.

Abstract:
Abstract Gear noise emitted from transmission units for automobiles should be evaluated by an expert of gear noise. Although on some production lines, quietness performance estimates from measured noise levels of the units, the estimation must be severe. There is no definite relationship between the measured noise levels and the evaluations by the experts. Therefore, for standing on the safe side, the estimation should be severe. As a result, such an automatic gear noise diagnosis system must yield transmission units with over-quality. The present study deals with a new gear noise diagnosis system to which an artificial intelligence is applied; i.e., a neural net is applied. The former evaluations by the new gear noise diagnosis system were quite good when the statistical property of the teacher signals from which the system learned was similar to that of population. This fact means many teacher signals are necessary on the practical use. The present paper describes a new method for digitizing the measured noise levels. This method provided good evaluations of the system even when the statistical property of the teacher signals were not similar to that of the population. In addition, a new method, “Moment Method” for determining the construction of the neural net was introduced instead of “Back Propagation Method”. The Moment. Method contributed to the improvement of the system judgements.

Abstract:
Lightweight design in passenger cars is gaining more and more importance. Independent from conventionally or electrically drive train concepts, weight reduction is one of the most rated defining variables for fuel or energy consumption, thus affecting the range of the vehicle. Overall, the potential for using steel in lightweight bodywork construction has attained a high level of development with the result that the potential for further optimisation is increasingly diminishing. As a consequence, alternative lightweight construction materials are set to become more important in the future. Compared to the beneficial application potential regarding bending and distortion of steel- and Aluminium compared to Magnesium blanks, this material becomes more and more interesting for automobile applications. Beside challenges like corrosion and recycling, mainly an appropriate forming technology lies in the focus of investigations. Due to the insufficient forming conditions of Magnesium at room temperature the focus of investigation was related to the characterisation of material properties depending on temperature, the thermo-mechanical forming simulation for process and tool design and the practical realisation of complex, car-related part geometries as well as requirements for forming tools and additional devices. In the following article we will present the results of studies into the forming of magnesium sheets (AZ31) including tailored blanks, achieved within a growth cell (TeMaK and TeMaK+).

Abstract:
This paper seeks to introduce a novel approach in salvaging the urban realm through exploring ways in which design can extrapolate the use and the value of consistent industrial byproducts, mainly from the automobile industry. The research begins with a need to conserve materials and energy with a focus on adding value by design. In this paper, a speculative design work and comparative analysis have been conducted. The method begins with the analysis of automobile byproduct materials, observations of procurement of new material and analysis of proposed designs of automobile body manufacturing. The goal of the study is to transform the linear approach in making building components, in particular, building exterior metal skins and cladding systems, to a closed-loop approach, which ensures multi-dimensional economic, social, and environmental benefits. The study introduces a novel approach in initiating a symbiosis between non-hazardous automobile waste and the building and construction industry. In particular, creating building skin systems from by-product galvanized sheet metal from the automobile industry. The results are expected to change the focus of the current waste management practices in the manufacturing industry from conventional recycling to creative reuse.

There is not a certain relationship between the measured noise levels and the evaluations by the gear noise experts. Therefore, the estimation should be severe. The previous evaluations by the new gear noise diagnosis system were good when the statistical property of the teacher signals from which the neural network system learned was similar to that of population. This fact means that many teacher signals are necessary on the practical use. Proposed digitizing method of gear noise levels provided good evaluations of neural network system even when the statistical properties of the teacher signals were not similar to that of the population. In addition, a new method, “Moment method” for determining the construction of the neural network system was introduced instead of “Back Propagation Method”. The Moment Method contributed to the improvement of the system judgments. The neural network system constructed using the Moment Method brought good performance. And the number of intermediate layers in the neural network system could be small enough to obtain good performance. It was found that the Moment method provided good learning because of connecting weights update function. When the Moment method was used for determining the connection weights between neurons in the neural network system, the developed gear noise diagnosis system achieved high and stable correct answer ratio. And the number of intermediate layers in the neural network system was only one enough for obtaining good performance of the system. Four intermediate layers, which was the maximum in this paper, did not provide much good performance.

Abstract:
Abstract 3D laser scanning technology overcomes the limitation of single point measurement in traditional measurement methods, which can convert the 3D information of objects and site environmental into data processed by computers. The 3D laser scanning technology is usually called restoration of real scenes technology, which has been widely used in automobile, architecture, terrain exploration, petro and other industries. During the construction stage of nuclear power project, the 3D laser scanning technology can be used to get the real environment information on site. Through comparative analysis of the real environment information and the design model environment, risks can be easily identified in advance and mitigation measures can be performed in time, thus effectively avoiding the rework and saving the cost of the project.

Abstract:
The structure of American cities has been greatly influenced and transformed with the onset of the car culture and its ever evolving impacts to the everyday life of American people. The early 1900’s experienced a noticeable growth in the demand and need for automobiles resulting in the increasing need for parking spaces in the city. Eventually, multi-level parking garages were built to suffice this requirement of the ever-growing city. However, increase of parking spaces around urban fringes; raise in gas prices; better public transit options in downtown cores; growing public awareness of reducing automobile dependence in order to address issues of sustainability; advancement in autonomous vehicles and demand-based traffic management, all are making existing parking garages obsolete and useless. The era of designing cities as if car access alone was sufficient appears to have ended. An opportunity lies where the existing underused parking garages can be repurposed into residential, entertainment, or work spaces rather than paying up for demolition and construction costs of an altogether new structure. It can be projected that this technical and architectural retrospection of existing parking garages can prove as a catalyst in resolving existing issues of the city. This paper traces past projects that have attempted to convert existing urban parking garages to other uses in North America. It then analyzes their design and construction approaches and discusses the implications of this type of conversion to the urban form of the areas surrounding these projects. Our initial investigation concludes with an analytical framework that includes the following criteria: type of garage structure; vertical circulation and ramp configuration; material and construction method; floor plan arrangement; size in relation to block and street orientation; surrounding area condition in terms of land use and street network. Furthermore, implications of garage conversion to urban form of surroundings can be examined by these measures: remediation of building façade; alternation in setback between public right of way and building footprint; change in active usage along building frontage.

Abstract:
The main goal of our work was to design a possible modification of the automobile piston petrol engine for aircraft propulsion and subsequently its implementation. The paper can be divided into four main units. The first part is aimed on the history and development of automobile and aircraft piston engines. We focused on their construction and gradual improvement of performance. The second unit is dedicated to theoretical knowledge of the cooling, starting and ignition systems. In the cooling system, we mainly described air cooling and the required components needed for that process. In the starting system, we paid attention to the necessity of starting gears, their types and uses. We described mainly electric starters and then we attached a diagram of the starting system. In the ignition system, we described the structural elements required for the process of igniting a mixture of fuel and air. In the following section, we described the engine used for aeroconversion, its parameters and the reason for its selection. In the last part we deal with the practical part of the paper. We created the component models needed for the complete construction of these systems, which were created in the computer program Autodesk Inventor Professional 2021. We prepared the cooling system for more efficient air cooling by adding deflectors, in the starting system we used a starter with a reducer to increase torque and reduce fuel consumption and in the ignition system, we proposed a modification of the flywheel made of dural material, which would reduce the overall weight of the engine. The result of our work is a finished design for aeroconversion of a flat four-cylinder engine. The modified engine is suitable for ultralight aircraft.
