Abstract:
Energy efficiency is becoming an important objective for modern manufacturing industry. The aim of this work is to improve energy efficiency of an automated system. Since a majority of production processes are limited by an external bottleneck, the hypothesis of this work is that reducing the processing rate of the restricted processes can lead to saving in energy and resources. A methodology based on optimisation at process, cell and line levels is developed and evaluated over different scenarios. The developed methodology is then applied to a simulated production cell to study its efficacy quantitatively. In this particular case, the proposed approach yields a decrease in energy consumption of 49% at maximum production capacity. This decrease can be greater if there is an external factor such as low demand or another stage in the production line.

Abstract:

Intensive competition on the global market puts great pressure on manufacturing companies to develop and produce products that meet requirements from customers and investors. One key factor in meeting these requirements is the efficiency of the product development and the production preparation process. Design automation is a powerful tool to increase efficiency in these two processes.

The benefits of automating the production preparation process are shortened led-time, improved product performance, and ultimately decreased cost. Further, automation is beneficial as it increases the ability to adapt products to new product specifications with production preparations done in few or in a single step. During the automation process, knowledge about the production preparation process is collected and stored in central systems, thus allowing full control over the design of production equipments.

Three main topics are addressed in this thesis: the flexibility of design automation systems, knowledge bases containing conflicting rules, and the automation of the finite element analysis process. These three topics are discussed in connection with the production preparation process of rotary draw bending.

One conclusion drawn from the research is that it is possible to apply the concept of design automation to the production preparation process at different levels of automation depending on characteristics of the implemented knowledge. In order to make design automation systems as flexible as possible, the concept of object orientation should be adapted when building the knowledge base and when building the products geometrical representations. It is possible to automate the process of setting up, running, and interpreting finite element analyses to a great extent and making the automated finite element analysis process a part of the global design automation system.

Bermeo, Vargas Elias Israel, and Pascual Dario Antonio Zorrilla.

Abstract:
The following research project proposes the development and implementation of an automatic sorter system for Hass avocados, through its different quality indexes (burns, frictions and black spots). The system integrates hardware and software to improve export quality and productivity in the agricultural industry. This project is the proposed solution to the current problem avocado exporting companies are facing in the selection stage. The avocado, also known as aguacate or palta, in its Hass variety, is grown exclusively for export, which is why optimal quality control is necessary. However, this process is currently inefficient because it is a manual process. In order to improve it, an automatic method is proposed, which consists of various mechanical phases, designed to perform the movement of avocados and an image processing algorithm, responsible for detecting disorders in the fruits. Finally, the validation tests and results of the analysis used in the evaluation of the proposed solution are shown.

Abstract:
This thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Löfqvist Engineering in Örebro. The task has been to perform a simulation of a large automation line, to be used in the manufacture of exhaust systems for trucks. Based on this simulation accurate cycle times for production are determined. These times can then be used by Löfqvist Engineering to verify the earlier estimated times. The work includes a literature review of Lean Production and how it works with automation. There is also some background information on Just In Time, different file formats and robot simulation in general for the reader to get a bit more background knowledge of the subject. The program that has been selected to perform the simulation is Tecnomatix Process Simulate and its built in Line Simulation module. The automation line consists of four handling robots, 13 operator stations and eight identical welding cells. Cycle times for the automation line have been determined and the result was 6 min 31s, for the automation line to complete one product. Cycle times were determined by calculating the average time to produce 10 pieces of products when the line was full of material. The report describes how the work for arriving at these cycle times have been performed and how simulation problems encountered during such operations have been resolved.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Sambri, Lorenzo. "Study and design of a torque meter for the control of the granulate production process." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021.

Abstract:
Nowadays improving accuracy, efficiency and robustness in measuring the torque, to overcome problems related to the repeatability of production processes, is taking on an increasingly important role in a highly automated, technologized and robotic industrial world. One of the main instruments available to detect and monitor the torque on a rotating system, such as a motor shaft, is the torque meter. This work, born in collaboration with IMA ACTIVE, deals with the torque meter integrated into granulators of the production chains of pharmaceutical companies to monitor the production process phases. The current transducer solution is revised, to define a sizing procedure for each machinery in which the torque meter must be integrated. Once the analytical relations for the instrument dimensioning are obtained and verified, the dimensioning of a specific missing measuring torque meter is realized and validated. The torque meter, as it is a reference instrument for the monitoring of a pharmaceutical process, requires periodic certifications of calibration. For this reason, in the thesis, it is also analysed the standard instrument used for the calibration procedure. New calibration instruments are here proposed and tested, to allow better emulation of the machine behaviour during the calibration procedure, hopefully improving the overall accuracy. Finally, issues related to the torque meter maintenance are taken into consideration. To simplify the maintenance procedure, a possible realization with modular construction is proposed. A decomposable instrument would allow a drastic reduction of the times required for the maintenance of the instrument, obviating the problems related to the one-piece solution.

Abstract:
This thesis started as an initiative from one of the co-authors that previously worked at SAAB AB during summer 2018. During the summer she worked with the design process of In-process part Definition (IPPD) and an interest emerged for making it more efficient. The design process of IPPD (DPOI) is where a design article, designed in CATIA, become manufacturable and adapted for assembly. The DPOI can be seen as the interface between the department of Airframe development and Production at SAAB AB. The first step was to investigate the current DPOI and conduct a pre-study to find time-consuming activities.  The pre-study consisted of five interviews, an observational study and a time study were the aims was to collect employees' own opinions, approve a pre-defined workflow divided into twelve elements and find problem areas. Element 1.0-11.0 is tasks within the DPOI and element 12.0 is the first step in the review process called Checker. Element 4.0 and 8.0 were divided further into parallel activities where the operators in the time study performs either, e.g., E4.0 (macro) or E4.1 (manually). To find time-consuming activities a time study was performed. The authors of this thesis acted observers and clocked each element while three operators denoted A-C designed 24 IPPDs. The results from the time study showed that elements 1.0, 3.0, 4.1 and 7.0 were time-consuming and E4.1 had potential to become automated. The selection of 2-3 problems was carried out through two Weighted Sum Models (WSM) where criteria was defined and solutions was listed. Each solution was weighted to each criterion and got a total grade. The selected problems, based on the total grade, were: Documents and Combined macro. Documents and manuals for scenario 5, 6 and the entire design process of IPPD was developed to make new employees learning process more efficient. A draft macro for scenario 5 and new complete macros for scenario 1 and 6 was developed and used in the comparative study. The comparative study was conducted like the previous time study but instead the new developed macros was used to make E4.0 more efficient and eliminate E4.1. In the comparative study only E4.0 was clocked for all 24 IPPDs in the time study. The result showed that E4.0 has become average 60% more efficient for all IPPDs and the total time with the new developed macros for E4.0 vs E4.1 has become 14,3% more efficient. Problems and time-consuming activities has been found and improved. The performed comparative study shows that the DPOI can be minimized further in terms of time; there are possibilities to make more elements from the DPOI automated.

Abstract:
In order to fulfill increasing production rates, new automated production technologies are required for manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced plastic components for the aerospace industry. Currently, large, double curved composite components have to be manufactured manually, which leads to high process times and poor scalability. As a consequence, a team of cooperating robots with passively adjustable end-effectors was developed, that is capable of handling dry carbon textiles and can be used for layups in double curved molds. This thesis deals with the implementation of a robot program, that performs an automated adjustment of each end-effector to the surface geometry of the manufactured part. The functional principle and the accuracy of the process are evaluated. Further, the automatically adjusted end-effectors are utilized to cooperatively layup carbon plies. The results show, that the accuracy of the automated adjusting process is sufficient to drape carbon fabrics during pick-up and automated layup is possible with this approach. In conclusion, the developed process can be integrated into a fully automated process for future experiments, but hardware inaccuracies should be improved, in order to further enhance the accuracy of the system.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We present in this thesis a method to assess a system efficiency based on modelling of the temporal and stochastic spread of faults. The OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) has become through the NF E60-182 standard one of the major indicators of the effectiveness in piloting production systems. It includes 3 main concepts (Quality, Performance and Availability). If its evaluation can be easy for a single system, the modeling of its components for the global efficiency assessment is much more difficult (taking into account redundancies, temporal scale factors…).in order to take in account the local contribution of each component of complex production system, a notion of OTE (Overall Throughput Effectiveness) is developed. The purpose of OTE is twofold: it measures factory-level performance and factory-level diagnostics such as bottleneck detection. The expected result gives a formal contribution to establishment a methodology for analysis, design, and decision-making. The results are discussed using a demonstrator based on AltaRica Data-Flow, language in both formal and graphic and real tool modeling / simulation

Abstract:
Products with complicated shapes require superior surface finish to perform the intended function. Despite significant developments in technology, finishing operations are still performed semi automatically/manually, relying on the skills of the machinist. The pressure to produce products at the best quality in the shortest lead time has made it highly inconvenient to depend on traditional methods. Thus, there is a rising need for automation which has become a resource to remain competitive in the manufacturing industry. Diminishing return of trading quality over time in finishing operations signifies the importance of having a pre-determined trajectory (tool path) that produces an optimum surface in the least possible machining time. Tool path optimization for finishing process considering tool kinematics is of relatively low importance in the present scenario. The available automation in grinding processes encompass around the dynamics of machining. In this paper we provide an overview of optimizing the tool path using evolutionary algorithms, considering the significance of process dynamics and kinematics. Process efficiency of the generated tool movements are studied based on the evaluation of relative importance of the finishing parameters. Surface quality is analysed using MATLAB and optimization is performed on account of peak to valley height. Surface removal characteristics are analysed based on process variables that have the most likely impact on surface finish. The research results indicated that tool path is the most significant parameter determining the surface quality of a finishing operation. The inter-dependency of parameters were also studied using Taguchi design of experiments. Possible combinations of various tool paths and tool influencing parameters are presented to realize a surface that exhibits lowest errors.

Abstract:

The design work that precedes the automation of a process is not an easy job. Each one of the variables and possible risks involved in process must be carefully considered before implement the final design as well the requirements in performance and cost. However automate a dangerous, inefficient or just uncomfortable task entails many benefits that make up for the long period of design process. A well automated line will benefit the production with quality, productivity and capacity among other profits. In this project the immediate objective is to automate the “SANDFLEX Hacksaw blades” packaging process in the plant that SNAEurope owns in Lidköping. Actually the packing is completely manual. One operator packs the blades into the boxes meanwhile one more operator loads and unloads the packing station with empty and full boxes respectively. The task is both, tiring and uncomfortable for the operators as well inefficient for the company since the production rate is limited.

Analyzing and observing carefully product and process, different theories and strategies to achieve the goal were developed. Three are the possible solutions to solve the problem, with different levels of automation and technologies. The robotic solution uses an articulated robot to perform all the tasks; the hybrid solution uses pneumatic devices to pack the blades and an articulated robot to support the station loading and unloading the boxes. Finally the pneumatic solution uses only pneumatic devices, which hold, open and close, push box and blades using airpower; a few sensors detect positions and states, since a PLC coordinates and controls all process. By means of discussing these solutions with the company’s engineers and workers, after a deep literature study and two test of performance, was it possible to select the most suitable solution to accomplish the packaging task. The pneumatic solution is cheap and simple, but at the same time robust and reliable. This design performs the packaging task efficiently and fast. And more important, the operator passes from pack manually the blades to monitor the process.

Abstract:
Process Automation has the potential to yield great benefits for companies and organizations, especially in the financial services industry where companies are information-intensive and experience rich data flows. This has mostly been done through Robotic Process Automation (RPA), but the increased maturity of Machine Learning algorithms has increased the viability of combining classic RPA with Artificial Intelligence, leading to Intelligent Process Automation (IPA). However, there is a set of challenges embedded in the transition from RPA to IPA. These challenges need to be dealt with in order to ensure that the benefits of the new technology can be harvested. The aim of this research was to identify this set of challenges that the companies will face, as well as provide guidance to what preparations that need to be made before IPA can be implemented in full scale. The research was conducted as a theory building case study at a large Swedish bank. An empirical study was conducted, consisting of interviews with researchers, as well as automation professionals and R&D at the case company. The findings of the empirical study and previous research on the area were combined and condensed into a guiding framework for organizations wanting to adopt IPA.

Abstract:
Knowing about the field-specific content and conditions of work in a scientific discipline is essential for the design of socio-technical systems used for the production of scientific knowledge. In the context of automated knowledge production, it remains unclear which field-specific factors influence the possibilities to distribute labour between humans and machines. This study analyses a fundamental prerequisite for the automation of research processes, namely the possibility to formalise typical actions and knowledge, with regard to its field-specific conditions. A qualitative approach is used to compare the construction of evidence in two scientific fields, textual studies and climate research. In order to systematically compare research processes and to empirically investigate correlations between the properties of a research process and the possibilities of its formalisation, a comparative framework based on the sociological concept of epistemic conditions was developed. Field-specific conditions of doing research represent an explanatory approach for variants of knowledge production and thus for variant degrees of formalised processes. Results show that the degree of codification of knowledge has a significant influence on the occurrence and on the sequence of types of action and of knowledge resources with variant degrees of formalisation. In addition, the role of personal interpretation in problem formulation and construction of empirical evidence and the degree of decomposability of a research process are decisive factors for being able to delegate actions to machines. Furthermore, the study shows that a high degree of formalisation requires informal human action to complement automated processes and that formalisability is subject to temporal dynamics during research processes.

Abstract:
Market globalization and mass customization requirements are forcing companies towards automation of their product development processes. Many task-specific software solutions provide localized automation. Coordinating these local solutions to automate higher-level processes requires significant software maintenance costs due to the incompatibility of the software tools and the dynamic nature of the product development environment. Current automation methods do not provide the required level of flexibility to operate in this dynamic environment. An autonomic product development process automation strategy is proposed in order to provide a flexible, standardized approach to product development process automation and to significantly reduce the software maintenance costs associated with traditional automation methods. Key elements of the strategy include a formal approach to decompose product development processes into services, a method to describe functional and quality attributes of services, a process modeling algorithm to configure processes composed of services, a method to evaluate process utility based on quality metrics and user preferences, and an implementation that allows a user to instantiate the optimal process. Because the framework allows a user to rapidly reconfigure and select optimal processes as new services are introduced or as requirements change, the framework should reduce burdensome software maintenance costs associated with traditional automation methods and provide a more flexible approach.

Abstract:
Automation is the future. Sometime in the future, warehouses will be fully automated. Already today, many warehouses around the world have reached a high degree of automation. This master's thesis project aims to evaluate how a warehouse site within Chr. Hansen Holding A/S can take one step further in this direction. Chr. Hansen Holding A/S is a global bioscience company.  The packaging process currently relies primarily on manual labor, and the focus is to investigate methods to improve this process through automation. The process of packing goods on a pallet consists of the following steps; transport to the packing area, label the products, move the products to a new pallet, measure, apply protection, wrap, label the pallet, and transport to temporary storage.  In order to automate a process, some degree of standardization is needed, but many parameters constrain this development. An important parameter is variation in terms of material and packaging, both interior and exterior, such as pallet type. The packaging process can be divided into a number of subfunctions by Function Analysis. Together with Process Activity Mapping, the study suggests that the relevant part of automating is the last part of the packing process, from the step wrap mentioned earlier.  The project has developed five different concepts. All of the concepts include a fully-automatic wrapping machine. The five concepts have different methods of transporting finished pallets to storage at the other end of the warehouse. The investigated transport methods are various lengths of conveyor belts, an automated guided forklift (AGV), a combined conveyor belt-AGV solution, and human-operated forklifts.  The study suggests a solution with a fully automated wrapping machine followed by a 9 m conveyor belt followed by transport with a human-operated forklift. The wrapping machine should include modules for labeling and weight and height measuring. The improvement is most likely to reduce cost packing by 460,000 DKK per year calculated in fixed prices of 2019. It requires an investment of 1,500,000 DKK.  The project finds that the wrapping machine is the most beneficial part of the concepts, but an AGV solution could be an interesting addition with a great future perspective. The company should follow the development of AGV technology in relation to warehousing.  Furthermore, the project improves safety in the warehouse by reducing the forklift traffic in the packaging area.

Abstract:
Employees today have necessary daily tasks that do not require human handling. The objective is to investigate two processes if they are suitable for automation as well as to create and evaluate a prototype. The goals are to analyze the process, examine appropriate tools for automation, compare the tools, create and evaluate prototype, and perform an acceptance test. Robotic Process Automation is about automating tasks that humans have to do. Good candidates for automation are time-consuming, repetitive, rule-based tasks, prone to human er- rors with clear goals and expectations. The preliminary study was conducted in the form of a literature study of web-based sources, and the analysis was done by breaking down the process in different parts. The comparison was carried out by investigating the features of these tools. The prototype was created on Windows in UiPath tools and the robot will work on Internet Explorer and Excel, which will have a macro written in Visual Basic for Applications. The client will look at the criteria given and also on the prototype output and provide a subjective response. UiPath, Workfusion, and Selenium test programs were created. The prototype automatically logs on to Visma PX by entering username and password. Then it navigates, searches for an assignment and retrieves the data available. Indata is filtered and typed into Excel for each activity and employee. Finally, a macro creates graphs. Time tests show that UiPath is significantly more optimized and faster at completing the test programs. UiPath has strong benefits with its tools.

Abstract:
The digital development in the society has resulted in new ways of working in order for companies to improve and streamline their processes. Earlier, organizations have implemented system solutions to increase the efficiency in their operations, but along with the digital development the phenomenon Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has evolved. RPA aims to streamline the operations of companies through processes automation. The problem area that has been identified through review of earlier literature is about what is specific for activities carried out at RPA implementations and what is characterizing these. The study, which has been carried out with a qualitative approach, therefore aims to create an understanding for implementations of RPA. More specifically, in order to be able to identify which activities that are being implemented and how these are being characterized. With characteristics of the activities it is meant what, how and why the activity is implemented. We have, after completed study, identified eight characteristics for activities when implementing RPA.

Abstract:

In today’s world, innovations in software have provided organizations a platform to establish a collaborative environment that leverages new technologies. The Marine Corps is not immune from these innovations and must look at current innovations that can link current systems to decision makers. As today’s technology has advanced, the Marine Corps’ duty is to influence innovations to provide a collaborate environment. This collaborative environment, specifically command and control (C2) systems, must facilitate information retrieval at all levels while maintaining the authoritative integrity. This thesis provides information about Planning Application Extension (PAE), a collaborative software currently employed within Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF). Furthermore, this thesis examines how software applications can efficiently improve knowledge sharing during an Operational Planning Team (OPT) session. Having this context provides a platform for increased operational awareness of how real time information empowers the commander, staffs, and planners. Finding indicates that the PAE, a layer seven software extension, can be highly effective if properly leveraged by staffs and planners. Conversely, PAE is not well known and has a complex graphical user interface (GUI). Both attributes greatly affected the adoption rate of this platform. Thesis recommendations are that PAE become software of record to provide continuity in the execution of Marine Corps Planning Process (MCPP) regardless of geographic location. MAGTF staff training program (MSTP) should incorporate PAE in future MAGTF training, both integrated into the current curriculum and through distance learning. Furthermore, an updated PAE GUI will provide an intuitive experience and influence the perceived ease of use (PEOU) for the user.

Abstract:
Automation of work processes has become an important part of increasing business competitiveness, efficiency and quality. One type of technology used for this is Robotic Process Automation (RPA). It is a relatively new technology that, through a defined workflow, performs the tasks instead of a human being. The technology does not require integration but interacts with systems through the interface, just as a person would. Existing research has focused on the potential of RPA and not as thoroughly on challenges that can relate to the implementation of the technology. Therefore, the purpose of this analysis regards the identification of possible challenges relating to RPA, their nature and when they may occur. To collect empirical data, four semi-structured interviews with participants in a previous RPA-project were conducted, as well as observations of a consulting company presenting its RPA product for a potential client and trying to identify potential workflows to automate at a workshop with customers. This consulting company has recently made an investment to provide RPA as a product and believes that it has great potential but has come to the realization that there are challenges surrounding the implementation of the technology. The result of this study could identify a number of challenges that existing research indicated before. These challenges related to organizational change of business, technical implementation, and competence. In addition to that, another challenge could be identified regarding profitability. Finally, the result suggests that clear communication in the various implementation phases makes it beneficial to avoid these challenges and the negative impact they may have on the RPA-project and its result.

Process automation vendors must consider agility as a basis to gain a competitive edge in innovation. Process Automation systems can impact the operating cost of manufacturing equipment, the safe control of large quantities of energy and the safety of dangerous substances used during manufacturing. The manufacturing segment expects greater automation of larger processes, increased capability of process automation systems, and higher quality of those systems. At the same time, business requirements for process automation vendors demand shorter time to market, and greater market return for each dollar invested in product development. Therefore, process automation vendors must determine how to preserve discipline in development processes while adopting process agility necessary to meet dynamic business conditions. Interviews with 9 leaders from 6 companies (2 manufacturers, 2 process automation vendors and 2 automation consulting firms), survey feedback from development personnel and research of literature on state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice, yielded over 90 findings and observations on process automation business needs, development of automation offerings, and on suitability of agile practices to process automation product development. Agile methods may require changes to manufacturer work processes, but would enable an automation vendor to unlock more of the manufacturer's production value.
(cont.) Disciplined adoption of agile methods is crucial for agility to take hold throughout an automation vendor's organization, and to meet the concerns of process automation stakeholders. Rather than dismiss the suitability of agile development to process automation, a prescriptive guidance is provided that integrates an opportunistic risk-based assessment of how much agility is appropriate. The four values and twelve principles of the Agile Manifesto are a good basis for 8 additional agile practices for process automation: transitioning to agile, investing in agile capability, managing critical system parameters, engineering system-robustness, balancing project risk, continuous system validation, assuring domain expertise and clarifying ecosystem role.

Abstract:
Merlin.net Patient Care Network is a St. Jude Medical product that is used for remote patient management. The basic concept of Merlin.net is to allow the physician to view patient device follow-up information as well as general patient and device information on a web application. The Merlin.net system also interfaces with the patient and will send them notification if they miss a follow-up. All device information will be collected automatically while the patient is sleeping. This information is sent through a telephone line to a Merlin.net server to process a report package and display the collected information on the Merlin.net web application. The Merlin.net verification team ensures that all reports generated by the Merlin.net servers are processed and outputted correctly. There are currently 296 device parameters supported by Merlin.net, and the manual extraction and comparison of the expected parameter values takes several hours for each patient follow-up session. Currently there are 250 patient follow-up sessions used for verification testing. Each new release will continue to create additional patient follow-up sessions. Merlin.net releases are approximately 6 months apart, and each new release adds approximately 30-50 new patient follow-up records to support the new devices. In order to meet aggressive project deadlines, while ensuring that the Merlin.net system is processing and outputting patient follow-up data correctly, it is necessary to come up with an automated process to verify the contents of the processed data is correct. This will save a tremendous amount of time as well as improve on the quality of the verification process by eliminating human error and rework. It is critical for patient safety that the patient device follow-up information is processed and outputted correctly. In this thesis an automated process was developed to verify the correct content of the Merlin.net server generated reports for each patient follow-up session. This process leveraged different tools and scripting languages to achieve automation. TDE (Test Development Environment) tool was used to extract the device parameters from the patient follow-up sessions. The TDE script was written to extracts the desired parameter values from the patient follow-up session and automatically populates parameters in a device parameters spreadsheet. Once all the device parameter values are extracted in the spreadsheet, they are passed through a set of mapping rules, which form the expected values. The mapping rules were implemented as VBA (Visual Basic for Application) macros, one macro for each report. The VBA macros write the expected values back to the spreadsheet to form an “expected values spreadsheet”. The patient follow-up session is then sent to the Merlin.net server to process, which generates a processed patient follow-up session that contains a reports package in .zip format. A perl script was then written to compare the parameter values in the Merlinet.net generated reports with the corresponding expected values from the expected values spreadsheet. The perl script generates a comparison report displaying the discrepancies between the actual and the expected values.

In any aerospace manufacturing operation, including Pratt & Whitney's Compression Systems Module Center, producibility problems can be major drivers of cost. Much of the literature focuses on design for manufacturability as a solution to producibility problems. While this is a valuable approach, this study focuses on manufacturing process improvement as a solution to producibility issues. Two methods of process improvement are discussed, process automation and process reengineering. This thesis first surveys some of the major producibility problems at Pratt & Whitney's Compression Systems Module Center, as well as some of the efforts underway to address them. One of the largest issues, operator data input errors, is described in detail as a case study. Wireless gauging with automatic offset adjustment is proposed as a focused technological solution to this issue. As part of this study, funding has been obtained to implement the solution and testing has been conducted. This is an example of process automation. However, a broader process reengineering effort is also proposed. The fundamental question of why producibility problems tend to persist is also examined.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates solutions to automate a lab process and give the customer basis for investment. An analysis of the current lab process and interviews with the staff were performed to set requirements for an automated solution. The customer wants to perform an analysis on a large number of combinations between antibiotics and bacteria. The issues that an automated solution is not able to handle were identified for the customer. A market analysis of existing solutions was preformed and contact was established with different suppliers. The suggested products were evaluated by performance and if they would be able to adapt to the process. The evaluation shows that with the same number of working hours the customer can increase the productivity with 6.7 times using a semi-automated system and a fully-automated system will result in an increase of 18.3 times. A guidance of how the customer will implement the system is described in the report. The report shows that an automated solution will make their process more efficient.

Abstract:
Technology is advancing at a rapid pace impacting many industries including accounting and auditing industries. Technological development has enabled implementation of automated accounting systems that make it possible for firms to shift from traditional accounting to automated accounting. This change in record keeping has a direct influence on audit firms. As record keepings changes, it puts pressure on audit firms to implement systems that cater for the change in their clients’ systems. This promotes automated auditing where the use of tools such as data analytics and AI are of importance. There is prior research related to accounting system, automated accounting, automated auditing and the impact of technological development on various industries and professions. However, the impacts of automation on the audit process remain unexplored, especially in Swedish audit firms. As there is only a little literature on the subject, in spite of considerable amount of discussion inside and outside academia about how automation impacts the audit process, the subject is seen as current and interesting. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to discover how automation impacts the audit process in Swedish audit firms. The research question for this thesis is “How does automation impact the audit process?” The audit process is seen as being closely related to audit quality, audit efficiency and competence and skills of auditors. Thus, as sub-purpose, this research also aims to find out how the mentioned aspects are impacted by automation. In this thesis a qualitative approach was taken. Semi-structured interviews were performed with various auditors in order to explore the subject in question. Empirical findings of this thesis suggest that the execution stage of an audit process will be impacted the most by automation. The shift can already be seen but in the future the emphasis will be even more on testing internal controls than substantive procedures. It was also discovered that audit quality and audit efficiency are expected to increase because automation is believed to decrease the amount of human errors and speed up the audit process as well as help auditors draw better conclusions. Competence and skills of auditors were found to be as important in the future as they are nowadays, but the findings suggest that a higher level of IT knowledge and skills are desired in the future as more technology will be integrated in auditing. This research offers theoretical, practical and social contributions. This research extends the existing knowledge on the subject in question. It also helps accounting and auditing firms to understand the impact of automation in the field as well as gives them an opportunity to prepare in advance for changes that may occur. Additionally, the findings of this research can give educational institutions an indication in which way the curriculum in universities should be adjusted. On a national level the findings can be used to encourage continuous learning.  Furthermore, this research can be used as a point of departure for future research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In order to develop a better understanding of the process of development and deployment of automated systems, this thesis examines aspects of project execution and knowledge transfer in the context of a large automation project.

Background issues of project execution are examined, including the challenges of knowledge sharing in project development, as well as a brief discussion of measures of project success. The lifecycle of a large automation project is presented, including aspects of development and the development team, as well as design challenges inherent in the development process of a successful automation project which consisted of approximately 11,000 hours of combined effort by vendor and customer development teams.

Human factors aspects of large automation projects are explored, including an investigation of the workings of a large project team, by examining the cognitive aspects of the project team, as well as ecological aspects of the automation development process.

Using an interview methodology that can be termed the "echo method", project team members were interviewed in order to elicit helpful and unhelpful behaviours exhibited by other team members throughout the project. The results of these interviews are categorized and examined in the context of both knowledge management and social networks. Common themes in interview comments are identified, and related to both the areas of knowledge management and social networks.

Results indicated that team member experience and availability affect overall team performance. However, overlapping capabilities within a team were found to allow the team to adapt to changing circumstances, as well as to overcome weaknesses in team member availability. Better understanding of team interactions and capabilities supports improvements in project performance, ultimately delivering higher quality automation and streamlining the development process.

Abstract:
In the process industry, network and system security have become important since the introduction of Ethernet-based fieldbus protocols. As an example, a successful attack on a power plant, supporting large cities with energy, could result in a temporal but total power loss. Such attacks could be devastating for the society. The security threats are real, and motivations for attacking industrial communication systems may be political or economical. The visions of autonomous systems, which can be supervised, diagnosed and maintained from remote is not far from reality, but stress the need for security and safety measures. Wired fieldbus protocols are mature with respect to safety and there are existing standards for safe communication. However, the wired fieldbuses lack adequate security measures to be deployed in industrial automation. In wireless sensor networks security is addressed thoroughly in the standards, but is not mature with respect to safety. Future automation systems need ideally to seamlessly support safety and security in heterogeneous networks while hiding the complexity for the end-users in order to successfully manage large-scale industrial production. This thesis presents one feasible solution towards safe and secure communication in heterogeneous industrial networks for process control. The presented solution addresses several other important aspects such that engineering efficiency, transparency, possibilities for retrofitting, coexistence with international standards in order to protect the return-of-investment of products, systems, and installed base within the area of process automation. Field trials show that several improvements of wireless sensor networks with respect to determinism in both the uplink and the downlink are needed. This is not only true when it comes to the research problems addressed within the scope of this thesis, but rather a necessity for market acceptance and deployment in process automation in general. The major contribution of this thesis is a method that enables end-to-end safe and secure communication in heterogeneous automation networks without major changes in existing standards, while preserving engineering and integration efficiency.

By designing and re-designing biological system, synthetic biology is advancing a wide range of domains from biotherapeutics for fatal cancers to biofuels and artificial meat to improve the global environment and food security. As the scale and complexity of synthetic biology endeavors are increasing, designing automation processes to replace manual labor is becoming more important to improve cost effectiveness, reproducibility, and efficiency including error reduction. Despite the desire for lab automation in the research and industry, in reality, scientists still largely rely on manual techniques in the labs even though the conventional approach becomes unmanageable and slows down their research iterations. One of the key problems is the mental barrier. According to the online survey and interviews conducted in this research, almost 90% of researchers cannot trust the quality of robot's work even though they do not know the actual success rate of the robotics work and what the robot can do. To bridge the gap for making the automation process more accessible, this research is proposing the use of "Bot", a software robot with which people can communicate through the internet and "Internet of things (IoT)". In the system, Bot is connected with the lab automation robots such as liquid handling robots. By communicating with the Bot using user-interfaces such as Slack, researchers can place work orders on lab robots and monitor their order status anytime. Moreover, people can directly ask the Bot for important information and instructions, such as protocol success rate and scheduling.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis paper is to answer the question: is robotic process automation efficient/beneficial and should accountants consider its implementation? For accountants, robotic process automation is a software that “perform[s] tasks such as processing sales and financial transactions, managing data, communicating between different systems, and access management, as well as monitoring and reporting” (Seasongood, 2016). In order to determine whether or not RPA should be implemented, a survey was found that had over 500 responses from varying companies currently using RPA. A statistical analysis will be performed in order to determine if any statistical significances exist between questions (both the benefits and challenges of RPA), by countries, by employee sizes, and by business functions. Based on the results, a conclusion will be provided on RPA’s implementation into the accounting field.

SHAH, UDAYKUMAR RASIKLAL. "AUTOMATION OF FIRMWARE CODE REVIEW PACKET GENERATION PROCESS." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2011. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/466.

Abstract:
Peer code review is one of the best ways to immediately improve software quality, save cost and prevent rework. It improves software quality by finding defects earlier in the development lifecycle before software gets to customers. Problems were experienced for generating a consistent code review packet due to lack of an automated process. It takes anywhere from four hours to more than a day based on midsize to the large size features. Errors were introduced due to the manual steps involved in the legacy process. The automation of generating the code review packet was implemented using Perl programming and Beyond Compare diff tool in Clear Case version control environment to output the code packet in the PDF format. Automation in generating the code review packet reduced the packet generation time by more than 75%. It translated the manual process to a simple, automated process which helped save time and rework. It removed all inconsistencies and made it easier for reviewers to understand and review the packet.
