Abstract:
The paper presents the results of research on the influence of fillers introduced into plastic greases on the rheological properties of the boundary layer of the resultant lubricant compositions. The fillers were PTFE and MoS2 powders. They are added to lubricants to improve their tribological properties; however, these fillers also affect the rheological properties of the composition. This affects the change of the shear stress value in the lubricant during its flow in the lubrication system. Knowledge of this value, especially during the flow of the lubricant composition in the boundary layer, has a significant impact on the operation of automated central lubrication systems in which these compositions can be used. Measurements were carried out by means of a rotary rheometer (Rheotest 2.1). Tests were performed on lithium and bentonite greases (without additives) as well as compositions of these greases containing various percentage of the fillers mentioned above. Test results showed that both the type of grease and the type of filler introduced into this grease affect the rheological properties in the boundary layer of the produced lubricating compositions.

The paper presents the results of studies on the influence of fillers, introduced into lubricating greases, on the rheological properties of resultant grease compositions. These fillers were graphite and PTFE powders. They are added to greases in order to improve their tribological properties. They also affect their rheological properties, and they mainly change the value of the shear stress in grease during its flow in a lubrication system. Knowledge of this value is important in designing automated central lubrication systems in which these compositions may be used. Measurements during experimental tests were performed by means of a rotary rheometer Rheotest 2.1. Tests were performed on pure lithium and bentonite greases, with the addition of oxidation and corrosion inhibitors as well as compositions of these greases with different shares of the above mentioned fillers. These tests were performed by changing the gradient of shearing rate. Test results have shown that both the kind of grease and the kind of filler introduced into this grease affect the rheological properties of produced grease compositions.

Abstract:
One of the causes of malfunction of commercial vehicle is corrosion or wear. In order to prevent corrosion and wear, lubricants have to be supplied periodically. However, the period of lubrication usually depends on operator's judgment. If the period is too short, excess lubricant will cause pollution and unnecessary expenses, whereas long periodic supply of lubricant might cause wear, damage and eventual breakdown. Therefore, an automatic lubrication system with predetermined interval will reduce the excessive supply of lubricating oil and prevent wear and damage. This thesis presents an automatic lubrication system which consists of a lubricant pump and an embedded controller. An automatic lubrication operating algorithm is used to operate the lubricant pump and feedback the pressure status of the system using pressure sensors. The developed system shows an efficient periodic supply of lubricant.

Abstract:
In many industrial applications imbalance is a major cause for unwanted vibrations. One way to compensate for an unknown imbalance is the implementation of an automatic ball balancer. Oil-lubricated automatic ball balancers are applied in hand-held tools and washers. However, in applications such as optical drives fluid lubrication is highly undesirable since it may destroy the optical system upon leakage. Therefore, in this paper, the balancing performance of an automatic ball balancer without fluid lubrication is investigated. The absence of fluid lubrication gives rise to dry friction phenomena which cause the existence of equilibrium sets of the balls in the automatic ball balancer. A model of the system with dry friction, modeled by a set-valued force law, is built based on dedicated experiments. The resulting equilibrium sets and their dependency on system parameters are studied and the consequences for the balancing performance is assessed. Based on these results, it can be concluded that in parts of such equilibrium sets the balancing performance deteriorates when compared to the system without automatic ball balancer; in other words, the balancing performance is endangered by the presence of dry friction. This conclusion is supported by both numerical and experimental results.

Full text
Abstract:
It is well known that machines perform far worse than humans in recognizing speech and audio, especially in noisy environments. One method of addressing this issue of robustness is to study physiological models of the human auditory system and to adopt some of its characteristics in computers. As a first step in studying the potential benefits of an elaborate computational model of the primary auditory cortex (A1) in the central auditory system, we qualitatively and quantitatively validate the model under existing speech processing recognition methodology. Next, we develop new insights and ideas on how to interpret the model, and reveal some of the advantages of its dimension-expansion that may be potentially used to improve existing speech processing and recognition methods. This is done by statistically analyzing the neural responses to various classes of speech signals and forming empirical conjectures on how cognitive information is encoded in a category-dependent manner. We also establish a theoretical framework that shows how noise and signal can be separated in the dimension-expanded cortical space. Finally, we develop new feature selection and pattern recognition methods to exploit the category-dependent encoding of noise-robust cognitive information in the cortical response. Category-dependent features are proposed as features that "specialize" in discriminating specific sets of classes, and as a natural way of incorporating them into a Bayesian decision framework, we propose methods to construct hierarchical classifiers that perform decisions in a two-stage process. Phoneme classification tasks using the TIMIT speech database are performed to quantitatively validate all developments in this work, and the results encourage future work in exploiting high-dimensional data with category(or class)-dependent features for improved classification or detection.

Koskinen, M. (Miika). "Automatic assessment of functional suppression of the central nervous system due to propofol anesthetic infusion:from EEG phenomena to a quantitative index." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2006. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514281756.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The rationale for automatically monitoring anesthetic drug effects on the central nervous system (CNS) is to improve possibilities to gain objective information on a patient's state and to adjust the medication individually. Although monitors have shown their usefulness in practice, there are still a number of unclear issues, especially with respect to the scientific foundations and validity of CNS monitoring techniques, and in monitoring the light hypnotic levels. Current monitors are, for example, often based on heuristics and ad hoc solutions. However, a quantitative index for anesthetic drug effect should have a sound relationship with observations and with the selected control variable. The research objectives are: (1) to explore propofol anesthetic related neurophysiological phenomena that can be applied in the automatic assessment of CNS suppression; (2) to develop a valid control variable for this purpose; (3) by means of digital signal processing and mathematical modeling, to design and to evaluate the performance of an index that correlates with the control variable. This dissertation introduces potentially useful neurophysiological phenomena, such as changes in phase synchronization between different EEG channels due to anesthesia, and painful stimulus evoked responses during the burst suppression. Furthermore, it refines the progression of the time-frequency patterns during the induction of anesthesia and shows their relation to the instant of unresponsiveness. The presented spontaneous and evoked EEG phenomena provide complementary information about the CNS functional suppression. Most significantly, the dissertation proposes a continuous and observation based control variable (r scale) and the means to predict its values by using EEG data. The definition of the scale provides a basis for anticipating the instant of the loss of consciousness. Additionally, the phase synchronization index as an indicator of drug effect is introduced. The approximate entropy descriptor performance is evaluated and optimised with a non-stationary signal recorded during the induction of anesthesia. The results open up opportunities to improve the preciseness, scientific validity and the interpretation of information on the anesthetic effects on CNS, and therefore, to increase the reliability of the anesthesia monitoring. Further work is needed to extend and verify the results in deep anesthesia.

Abstract:
Imagine a world where someone’s personal information is constantly compromised, where federal government entities AKA Big Brother always knows what anyone is Googling, who an individual is texting, and their emoticons on Twitter. Government entities have been doing this for years; they never cared if they were breaking the law or their moral compass of human dignity. Every day the Federal government blatantly siphons data with programs from the original ECHELON to the new series like PRISM and Xkeyscore so they can keep their tabs on issues that are none of their business; namely, the personal lives of millions. Our allies are taking note; some are learning our bad habits, from Government Communications Headquarters’ (GCHQ) mass shadowing sharing plan to America’s Russian inspiration, SORM. Some countries are following the United States’ poster child pose of a Brave New World like order of global events. Others like Germany are showing their resolve in their disdain for the rise of tyranny. Soon, these new found surveillance troubles will test the resolve of the American Constitution and its nation’s strong love and tradition of liberty. Courts are currently at work to resolve how current concepts of liberty and privacy apply to the current conditions facing the privacy of society. It remains to be determined how liberty will be affected as well; liberty for the United States of America, for the European Union, the Russian Federation and for the people of the World in regards to the extent of privacy in today’s blurred privacy expectations.

Because of climate anomalies, Taiwan is short of water and getting worse. According to the report of 105-year water storage facility operation statistics by the Water Resources Department in Taiwan, it points out water consumption increased and reservoir capacity decreased in Taiwan. In this report, the highest water consumption is agricultural irrigation, and traditional irrigation will lead to water loss. This thesis proposes an irrigation strategy that uses the Bayesian network and the weather forecast to predict the rain event. According to the state of the rain event and rainfall to make an irrigation decision. This irrigation decision will achieve water saving and avoiding rotten roots.

AbstractWe re-examine the topic of machine-learned clause selection guidance in saturation-based theorem provers. The central idea, recently popularized by the ENIGMA system, is to learn a classifier for recognizing clauses that appeared in previously discovered proofs. In subsequent runs, clauses classified positively are prioritized for selection. We propose several improvements to this approach and experimentally confirm their viability. For the demonstration, we use a recursive neural network to classify clauses based on their derivation history and the presence or absence of automatically supplied theory axioms therein. The automatic theorem prover Vampire guided by the network achieves a 41 % improvement on a relevant subset of SMT-LIB in a real time evaluation.

In medicinal leeches, heartbeat is a continuous, automatic function. Rhythmic constrictions of two muscular lateral vessels (the hearts) move blood through the closed circulatory system. The hearts are coordinated so that one beats in a rear-to-front progression (peristaltically), whereas the other one beats nearly synchronously along its length. The same coordination modes as in the hearts—peristaltic and synchronous—occur in the heart motor neurons: on one side, they are active in a rear-to-front progression, while on the other, they are active nearly synchronously. The rhythmic activity pattern of the heart motor neurons derives from the cyclic inhibition that they receive from the heartbeat central pattern generator (CPG). The core CPG comprises seven bilateral pairs of identified heart (HN) interneurons that occur in the first seven ganglia, HN(1)–HN(7).

The automatic drug infusion in medical care environment remains an elusive goal due to the inherent specificities of the biological systems under control and to subtle shortcomings of the current models. The central aim of this chapter is to present an overview of soft computing techniques and systems that can be used to ameliorate those problems. The applications of control systems in modern medicine are discussed along with several enabling methodologies. The advantages and limitations of automatic drug infusion systems are analyzed. In order to comprehend the evolution of these systems and identify recent advances and research trends, a survey on the hypertension control problem is provided. For illustration, a state-of-the-art automatic drug infusion controller of Sodium Nitroprusside for the mean arterial pressure is described in detail. The chapter ends with final remarks on future research directions towards a fully automated drug infusion system.

Abstract:
The development of science and technology will have widespread impacts throughout society, and the “assessment” will also be a sensitive area to the impact of scientific and technological developments. Especially information communication technology, or intelligent communication technology (ICT), which has developed rapidly in the twenty-first century, has had a sudden and even destructive effect on various studies and the field. The assessment, which has the most central function of collecting, processing, and analyzing data, would be one of the most rapidly changing areas under the influence of this ICT. This chapter deals with the following four topics about automation of AIG. Firstly, this chapter will introduce the meaning/implication of automation in AIG and analyze how automation of AIG affects the technology-based assessment system. In particular, this chapter will illustrate how AIG's automation will affect education, professional training, and/or public policy. Finally, this chapter concludes with a discussion of the future directions of AIG research and development.

Abstract:
Due to the deformation of the tunnel and the abnormal outburst of internal facilities, the existing railway tunnel line needs to be inspected regularly. However, the existing detection methods have some shortcomings, such as large measurement interference, low efficiency, discontinuity of section, and independence with the track structure. Therefore, an automatic detection method of tunnel space clearance based on point cloud data is proposed. By fitting the central axis of the tunnel, the extraction can be realized at any position of the tunnel. The coordinate system of tunnel gauge detection based on rail top surface is established, and different types of tunnel gauge frames are introduced. The improved ray algorithm method is used to realize automatic detection and analysis of various tunnel types. Field experiments on existing railway tunnels show that the method can accurately obtain the limit point and size of the tunnel. The cross-section of transgression is obtained. It can meet the requirements of tunnel detection accuracy and has great practicability in tunnel disease detection.

Abstract:
In 2006, an automatic lube oil filtration system with an automatic backflushing filter and a centrifuge for railway engines was already presented at the ASME spring technical conference in Aachen. The technical benefit of a centrifuge compared to a cartridge filter is the ability to collect smaller particles. The power to drive the centrifuge comes from the engine oil pressure. This engine oil pressure is dependent from the engine speed. Many operating profiles of locomotives are showing low engine speed and load e.g. while waiting in switchyard and under arctic weather conditions the engines keep idling even during “downtime”. Under those conditions a centrifuge is ineffective or even out of operation.

Abstract:
Traditional designs, using cartridge filters for full-flow filtration, protect medium speed and high speed diesel engines from wear and keep the concentration of abrasive particles in the oil system down by collecting them out of the circulating oil flow. After several hundred running hours the filtration surface is saturated, the cartridges get exchanged and disposed. State of the art automatic filters protect the engines against wear with the same efficiency as the cartridge filters but the backflushing mechanism keeps the filtration surface clean and the lubrication circuit remains maintenance free. The lifetime of filter elements lasts during time before overhaul (TBO) of the engine itself and is at least 24,000 hrs. The job to discharge the particles out of the system is done by highly efficient centrifugal oil cleaners in by-pass operation which separate not only the particles retained by the automatic filter but also very fine solids like soot. Figure 1 shows an automatic filter in cooperation with two centrifugal oil cleaners build into the silhouette of the engine.
