Full textIn an increasingly technological and interconnected world, the amount of data is continuously growing, and as a consequence, decision-making algorithms are also continually evolving to adapt to it. One of the major sources of this vast amount of data is the Internet of Things, in which billions of sensors exchange information over the network to perform various types of activities such as industrial and medical monitoring. In recent years, technological development has made it possible to define new high-performance hardware architectures for sensors, called Microcontrollers, which enabled the creation of a new kind of decentralized computing named Edge Computing. This new computing paradigm allowed sensors to run decision-making algorithm at the edge in order to take immediate and local decisions instead of transferring the data on central server processing. To support Edge Computing, the research community started developing new advanced techniques to efficiently manage the limited resources on these devices for applying the most advanced Machine Learning models, especially the Deep Neural Networks. Automated Machine Learning is a branch of the Machine Learning field aimed at disclosing the power of Machine Learning to non-experts as well as efficiently supporting data scientists in designing their own data analysis pipelines. The adoption of Automated Machine Learning has made it possible to develop increasingly high-performance models almost automatically. However, with the advent of Edge Computing, a specialization of Machine Learning, defined as Tiny Machine Learning (Tiny ML), has been arising, that is, the application of Machine Learning algorithms on devices having limited hardware resources. This thesis mainly addresses the applicability of Automated Machine Learning to generate accurate models which must be also deployable on tiny devices, specifically Microcontroller Units. More specifically, the proposed approach is aimed at maximizing the performances of Deep Neural Networks while satisfying the constraints associated to the limited hardware resources, including batteries, of Microcontrollers. Thanks to a close collaboration with STMicroelectronics, a leading company for design, production and sale of microcontrollers, it was possible to develop a novel Automated Machine Learning framework that deals with the black-box constraints related to the deployability of a Deep Neural Network on these tiny devices, widely adopted in IoT applications. The application on two real-life use cases provided by STMicroelectronics (i.e., Human Activity Recognition and Image Recognition) proved that the novel proposed approach can efficiently find out configurations for accurate and deployable Deep Neural Networks, increasing their accuracy against baseline models while drastically reducing hardware required to run them on a microcontroller (i.e., a reduction of more than 90\%). The approach was also compared against one of the state-of-the-art AutoML solutions in order to evaluate its capability to overcome the issues which currently limit the wide application of AutoML in the tiny ML field. Finally, this PhD thesis suggests interesting and challenging research directions to further increase the applicability of the proposed approach by integrating recent and innovative research results (e.g., weakly defined search spaces, Meta-Learning, Multi-objective and Multi-Information Source optimization).
Forien, Nicolas. "Autour de la criticité auto-organisée." Thesis, université Paris-Saclay, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UPASM012.
Full textMany models in physics present a phenomenon called phase transition: there is a critical point or a critical curve in the parameter space separating two distinct regions characterized by very different macroscopic properties. In such systems, the behaviour at the critical point is of particular interest and presents some scaling laws which appear to be universal across a wide range of different systems. The physicists Per Bak, Chao Tang and Kurt Wiesenfeld pointed out that these "critical" features are very common in nature, although they should only appear when the parameters happen to be finely tuned to the critical point. To explain this, they showed that some systems tend to be naturally attracted by critical points or critical regimes. This phenomenon is called "self-organized criticality". The goal of this thesis is to construct several simple models which present this phenomenon. To achieve this, we consider a model with a phase transition and we modify it in order to obtain a "self-critical" behaviour. We study a modification of a model constructed by Matthias Gorny from the generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model, in which the mean-field Hamiltonian is replaced by a long-range interaction. Several other models of self-organized criticality are constructed from Bernoulli percolation in finite boxes, and from the planar Ising model

Full textIn recent years, research shows that psychological distress in adolescence is expressed through a weakness that affects the body in the form of self-cutting. Many young people do not consult hospital services or health professionals immediately. They prefer to stay hidden in the shadow for a long time. Nevertheless, we have noticed that the number of young people who go to the school infirmary is increasing. From the hypothesis of the unconsciousness metapsychology, could school sickbay mean something else for teenagers who use it? The analysis of clinical interviews conducted with adolescents suffering, shows that school nursing has become "a refuge”, a place to shelter against the anxieties of non-representable puberty. Thus, the psychologist becomes a new object which supports and completes the weak self of the young patient, since it enables him to make a distance between his parents and himself. Sometimes the school infirmary can be turned into a helpful place because the adult is seen as a separate and different subject. Then, the teenager can start thinking about himself, playing with the affects and the representations before adopting a subjective process

Full textThis work reports on the realization by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy of visible light emitting diodes based on GaN wires grown on Si(111) with a focus on understanding the wires growth mechanisms and the properties of InGaN/GaN core/shell heterostructures grown around them. First we report the MOVPE growth of –c oriented GaN wires on sapphire. We demonstrate that the injection of silane during the growth induces the formation of a SiNx passivation layer around the GaN wires, preventing the lateral expansion. The silane flow can be stopped after a certain time without modifying the wire geometry. This phenomenon is used to control the position of the InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well shells along the wires. The wire growth on sapphire has then been transferred to silicon substrate thanks to the deposition of a thin AlN buffer layer prior to the wire growth. The deposition of InGaN/GaN core/shell heterostructures on the non-polar m-plane side facets of the wires and the influence of different growth parameters on the light emission properties of the quantum wells are then studied. Several types of quantum wells grown on different facets of the wire surface are observed. These different families emit light at different wavelengths that have been indexed thanks to cathodoluminescence mapping. The indium concentration in the quantum wells deposited is estimated between 8 and 24 %, depending on the growth conditions. This estimation has been made by comparing the emission wavelength of the quantum well to the recombination energy of electrons and wells simulated using the 8x8 band k.p theory for electron and hole masses. Finally, complete LED structures have been deposited on GaN wires by MOVPE and blue electroluminescence at 450 nm has been measured on single wires and assemblies of wires on Si(111)

Full textSocrates today. What relevance? What use? What would he teach us? What would he free us from? Where would he lead us? To answer these questions, no doubt, is to do over again the trial of Socrates, and to judge the latter ourselves. It is noteworthy that, day after day, our world remains very near condemning the philosopher, as did the Athenians of that time. While we might imagine there may lie an infinite distance between those despisers of Socrates and ourselves, our actual kinship with them is almost immediately brought to the fore by this opinion alone. Our central concern here is, in point of fact, precisely to determine what, in our present world, would indeed encourage the killing of Socrates as well as of what he perfectly embodies, philosophy. There lies our thesis: what is it that kills Socrates? To try to answer this should also help clarify all questions related to what good a Socrates may bring to a civilization such as ours; in a word, then, how not to repeat such blunders as those committed by the Athenians against him. We must imperatively become better, turn to the Good. Our lives depend on it. We depend on Socrates.

Full textLet $F_n$ be the free group on $n$ generators. Consider the group $IA_n$ of automorpisms of $F_n$ acting trivially on its abelianization. There are two canonical filtrations on $IA_n$: the first one is its lower central series $\Gamma_*$; the second one is the Andreadakis filtration $\mathcal A_*$, defined from the action on $F_n$. Andreadakis asked if and how these filtrations were different. We begin by describing a framework adapted to the study of such filtrations and their counterparts on group algebras. We then study several versions of the problem. In particular, we look at its restriction to some subgroups of $IA_n$ : we show that the two filtration coïncide when restricted to the triangular subroups and to braid groups. We also consider a stable version of the problem : we establish that the canonical morphism between the associated graded Lie rings is surjective when $n$ is big enough compared to a fixed degree. We also investigate a $p$-restricted version of the Andreadakis problem, and provide a calculation of the Lie algebra of the classical congruence group. Our methods are algebraic in nature. The tools come from combinatorial group theory and the study of mapping class groups; we often introduce some categorical langage to reformulate them

Full textThis thesis proposes three main contributions to advance the state-of-the-art of AutoML approaches. They are divided into two research directions: optimization (first contribution) and meta-learning (second and third contributions). The first contribution is a hybrid optimization algorithm, dubbed Mosaic, leveraging Monte-Carlo Tree Search and Bayesian Optimization to address the selection of algorithms and the tuning of hyper-parameters, respectively. The empirical assessment of the proposed approach shows its merits compared to Auto-sklearn and TPOT AutoML systems on OpenML 100. The second contribution introduces a novel neural network architecture, termed Dida, to learn a good representation of datasets (i.e., metafeatures) from scratch while enforcing invariances w.r.t features and rows permutations. Two proofof-concept tasks (patch classification and performance prediction tasks) are considered. The proposed approach yields superior empirical performance compared to Dataset2Vec and DSS on both tasks. The third contribution addresses the limitation of Dida on handling standard dataset benchmarks. The proposed approach, called Metabu, relies on hand-crafted meta-features. The novelty of Metabu is two-fold: i) defining an "oracle" topology of datasets based on top-performing hyper-parameters; ii) leveraging Optimal Transport approach to align a mapping of the handcrafted meta-features with the oracle topology. The empirical results suggest that Metabu metafeature outperforms the baseline hand-cr afted meta-features on three different tasks (assessing meta-features based topology, recommending hyper-parameters w.r.t topology, and warmstarting optimization algorithms)

The goal of this thesis is to build an extensible and open source library that handles the problems of tuning the hyperparameters of a machine learning pipeline, selecting between multiple pipelines, and recommending a pipeline. We devise a library that users can integrate into their existing datascience workflows and experts can contribute to by writing methods to solve these search problems. Extending upon the existing library, our goals are twofold: one that the library naturally fits within a user's existing workflow, so that integration does not require a lot of overhead, and two that the three search problems are broken down into small and modular pieces to allow contributors to have maximal flexibility. We establish the abstractions for each of the solutions to these search problems, showcasing how both a user would use the library and a contributor could override the API. We discuss the creation of a recommender system, that proposes machine learning pipelines for a new dataset, trained on an existing matrix of known scores of pipelines on datasets. We show how using such a system can lead to performance gains. We discuss how we can evaluate the quality of different solutions to these types of search problems, and how we can measurably compare them to each other.

Full textSocial capital is made from all values that push individuals to cooperate, to act with reciprocity or empathy in the absence of any formal control mechanism. Social capital manifests itself through trust, but also through opinions toward collective rather than individual responsability in economic activity. This thesis contributes to the economic literature interested in the role of norms by giving additional answers to its two fundamental questions. First, what are the consequences of differences in values on economic performance ? Second, where do these values come from ? The first two chapters document the relationship between trust on the one hand, and macroeconomic volatility and financial development on the other hand. It is shown that higher trust reduces macroeconomic volatility and fosters financial development across space and time. The third chapter rationalizes and documents a non-monotonic relationship between norms of cooperation and the generosity of the welfare state. It is shown that large and generous welfare states can be sustained both with high and low levels of trust, provided that a low level of trust is compensated with a large share of uncivic individuals who unduly use the social system. The question of the formation of values is tackled in the two last chapters. The fourth one documents the long-term persistence of values associated with the funding myths of mining activity in the United States : individual self-responsability and opposition to public intervention in the economy. The last chapter focuses on short term changes of trust in leaders and institution among Africans in the aftermath of riots and protests

Full textThe goal of the thesis was to get acquainted with frontal crash tests performed to passenger cars. The paper reviews the standards governed for the tests both in Europe and in the United States. In addition it looks into the agencies carrying out the tests and the different ways of performing the tests. In the end the study looks for connections between good test results and passenger safety in real life crash situations. The point of the study was also to open up the long and complicated laws and standards to create shorter and simpler sections. Large portion of the sources used in this study are laws and standards, but articles and literature were used to compare and construe them. The study shows that there are different ways to perform crash tests. The paper also reveals that the crashworthiness requirements are not globally uniform despite the efforts made in order to achieve harmony. The relation between good test results and safety of the car were not confirmed. The study found out that good ratings in crash tests don’t always mean good performance in real-life crash situations. The results of this study can be used in getting acquainted with crash tests. This study gives an overview of modern-day frontal crash tests and their requirements, along with some perspective on how adequate the test are
