Abstract:
La figure du réfugié a fait son entrée au cinéma lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, souvent par le biais de documentaires factuels et désincarnés. Dans les années 1980, la trilogie Welcome in Vienna retrace de manière attachante et romancée l’histoire d’apatrides d’Europe centrale et de leur errance entre Europe et États-Unis. Cette fresque en partie autobiographique du scénariste autrichien Georg Stefan Troller suit les principaux jalons de l’exil : les persécutions lors du départ, les péripéties de la clandestinité, l’intégration difficile à l’arrivée. Le fil conducteur reste celui de l’attachement au pays natal, « emmené à la semelle des souliers », et vers lequel le narrateur désire revenir. Ce retour impossible clôt le dernier volet de la trilogie, où, dans les décombres viennois, le narrateur tente un nouveau départ .
