Abstract:
Chapter 5 examines the coronation and enthronement of elected rulers. The chapter focuses on legitimacy problems, which differed from ruler to ruler but were often related to the circumstances of their respective elections: Báthory’s position in Transylvania was complicated by his secret allegiance to the Hungarian king and the public suzerainty of the Ottoman sultan; Henry’s short reign in Poland-Lithuania was plagued by his refusal to confirm his electoral conditions after his coronation; and Báthory’s reign in Poland-Lithuania had to address the consequences of his contested election. However, disobedience was only permitted within certain boundaries. The moment of enthronement marked the end of lawful opposition to a disfavoured candidate; from that point onward, opposition became unlawful rebellion, unless it fell under the conditions discussed in chapter 4. Additionally, some tensions had deeper roots in social and political problems that predated the adoption of the elective system.

Abstract:
Like Suryaniness, authority in Hayy al-Suryan is performed. The two are constantly contested and (re)articulated such that their components are legitimated, and, ultimately, agreed upon and valued. In putting some emphasis on gender in relation to notions of authority, particularly on women’s agency in the strict ecclesiastical and social hierarchy of Hayy al-Suryan, this chapter suggests the concept of authority as more appropriate than power. Borrowing Ricoeur’s tradition of authority, the chapter presents chant as the arbiter of Suryani modes of value in the worldly, relational sphere of Urfalli sociality. It underlines the affective liminality social complexity bestows on the female voice while gendering women’s bodies. The chapter zooms in on three individuals, portraying them dynamically in integrated instances of intimate ethnography, to shed light on the atemporal interlockings of value and perception in the musical story of a living, ancient musicality.

Abstract:
Evolving organisms must balance the need to change at an appropriate rate in response to varying environmental conditions against the need to maintain a functioning phenotype. This trade-off between conservatism and adaptability, between stability and exploration, has an interesting analogue at the social and cultural level. On the one hand, humans are characterized by an extreme dependence on culturally transmitted information, and deference to the group norm is the average individual behavior in human societies. On the other hand, innovation and openness to experience are distinctive features of cultural revolutions. This chapter focuses on the biology of conformity and innovation, discussing a variety of related topics, including personality changes with aging, the neural bases of divergent thinking, the positive effects of conservatism on intragroup cohesion, and the link between creativity and psychosis.

In light of the discussion of leadership and the idea of a public, this chapter considers what it is to be in a position of strategic authority constituted by unhomely spectating and hence judgment. Illustrations come from Sophocles’ Antigone and Creon.
