Pissa-ard, Isaraporn. "Depictions of Thailand in Australian and Thai writings:Reflections of the Self and Other." University of Sydney, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/6409.
Full textThis thesis offers both an examination of the depiction of Thailand in Australian novels, short stories and poems written in the 1980s and after, and an analysis of modern Thai novels and short stories that reflect similar themes to those covered in the Australian literature. One Australian film is also examined as the film provides an important framework for the analysis of some of the short stories and novels under consideration. The thesis establishes a dialogue between Thai and Australian literatures and demonstrates that the comparison of Australian representations of Thailand with Thai representations challenges constructively certain dominant political and social ideologies that enhance conservatism and the status quo in Thailand. The author acknowledges that the discussion of the representations of Thailand in contemporary Australian novels and short stories needs to take into account the colonial legacy and the discourse of Orientalism that tends to posit the ‘East’ as the ‘West’’s ‘Other’. Textual analysis is thus informed by post-colonial and cross-cultural theories, starting from Edward Said’s powerful and controversial critique of Western representation of the East in Orientalism. The first part of the thesis examines Australian crime stories and shows how certain Orientalist images and perceptions persist and help reinforce the image of the East and its people as the antithesis of the West. From Chapters Three through Six, however, more literary works by Australian authors are examined. The important finding is that most of the Australian authors under consideration attempt, though not always successfully, to resist and challenge the Eurocentric stereotypes of Asia and Asians that dominated Australian literature in earlier periods. This difference between contemporary Australian authors and their predecessors seems to reflect modern Australia’s endeavor to distinguish itself from the rest of the Western world and to redefine its relationship with Asia. As literary representations cannot be separated from socio-political contexts, the thesis also includes discussion of the Thai social and political history and, where appropriate, shows how colonialism and neo-colonialism exert their impact on modern Thailand.

These include clearly defining library policies towards the tenants, increasing and improving avenues of access to library services, improving library performance and services, increasing promotion and marketing, supporting personnel development policies, and creating partnerships with other organisations.

Full textThe findings from focus group interviews and related literature were used to develop a questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed as a self-report measure, using a 4 point scale ranging from ‘strongly agree’ to ‘strongly disagree’. It was arranged in 4 parts: Part A-Background Information, Part B- Models of Occupational Therapy Practice, Part C-Occupational Therapy Practice, and Part D-Practice Comment. Parts A, B and C consisted of closed-ended questions, whereas Part D was constructed to elicit open-ended questions. The survey data was collected from 138 Thai occupational therapists (ThaiOTs) and 155 Western Australian occupational therapists (WAOTs). A Chi-square test result demonstrated that ThaiOTs favoured the Medical Model for practice whilst WAOTs used the Performance Model and the Whole Person Model (p < 0.05). Principal component factor analysis was used to identify significant factors differentiating the practice of WA and Thai occupational therapists and to guide the development of the model of practice for ThaiOTs. The Mann-Whitney U Test results showed clear differences of therapist practice between Australia and Thailand in relation to their views about Clients, Professional Perspective (Therapists), Intervention, Cultural Implications, and Health Care Systems due to the influence of the culture and socio-cultural environment (p < 0.05). The outcomes from all stages in the study were used to develop a model of practice for Thai occupational therapists. This model named the ‘Samphan’ Framework of Practice focuses on the client and family as an inseparable unit, which differs from an individual, or client focus central to most Western models.

Sapphire commonly occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Commercial sapphire is mainly mined from alluvial deposits associated with alkali basalts. Tracing the origin of alluvial sapphire is difficult for the complexity induced during weathering, erosion, and transportation. Isothermal experiments show that corundum cannot crystallize from basaltic magmas. Therefore, sapphire is considered to be xenocryst in basalts, but its genesis is still debated. Based on trace element geo-chemistry, mineral inclusions, isotopes, and geochronology, three ge-netic processes are proposed for sapphire from alkali basalts. They are: (1) metamorphic recrystallization of aluminous rocks, (2) crystallization from evolved alkali magmas produced by low degrees of partial melting from mantle, and (3) crystallization from over-saturation caused by mixing carbonatitic and silicic magmas. In this study we used energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) to identify mineral inclusions within sapphires from Thailand (Chanthaburi-Trat and Kanchanaburi) and Australia (New South Wales). Most inclusions are less than 5 μm, and two types of inclusions can be distinguished. The first type occurs in slender veins, which are cracks formed after the crystallization of host sapphire. They are referred to as the “secondary” inclusions. The secondary inclusions include calcite, quartz, dolomite, Fe-oxide (Kanchanaburi and New South Wales) as well as albite and apatite (Kanchanaburi). Secondary inclusions are not observed in Chanthaburi-Trat sapphires. Other inclusions distribute randomly in sapphire. They are referred to as “primary” inclusions and can provide constraints on the genesis of host sapphire. The observed primary in-clusions include plagioclase, alkali feldspar, quartz, calcite, Nb-ilmenite and aegirine in Chanthaburi-Trat sapphires, calcite and allanite? in Kanchanaburi sapphires, and alkali feldspar and Ti-oxide (rutile?) in New South Wales sapphires. Calcite, Nb-ilmenite and aegirine usually occur within carbonatitic magmas, whereas plagioclase, alkali feldspar, quartz and Ti-oxide (rutile?) are constituent minerals in silicic magmas (granite). Carbonatitic and silicic magmas are unlikely to originate from the same parent magma: therefore, it is inferred that hybrid process resulted in Al-oversaturation followed by sapphire crystallization. Hybrid process might lead to variable O-isotope composition, inconsistent with the limited variation shown by the sapphire from Chanthaburi-Trat (5.1-6.2 ‰). We propose that the proportion of carbonatitic melts in hybrid magmas was minute; thus, the variation in O-isotope composi-tion was not significant as expected.
