Abstract:
MY first impressions when I saw this book was ?what a remarkable achievement? and ?I want one for my library?. The author of this book, Stephen Jackson, hails from a long association with the zoo industry having worked for many years at Taronga Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary and more recently with the Animal Welfare Unit of the NSW Department of Primary Industries, so he comes with a commanding knowledge of the requirements for captive management of Australian mammals. He has spent considerable time formulating this volume; it is nicely presented, thorough in scope and clearly very authoritative. However, while expert information does not come cheap, the price of this book (are you sitting down?) at $240 puts it well out of the price range of many. I?m still gasping. This book is marketed for (generally underpaid) zookeepers, veterinarians, zoologists, researchers and students, but this price restricts it to being a specialist reference volume purchased by a limited number of users, zoological institutions, and university libraries with good acquisitions budgets. This is unfortunate as every wildlife carer, zoo, and breeding facility (in Australia and elsewhere) that holds or breeds Australian mammals should have one of these volumes. It would be fantastic to see a complete series of these ?Biology and Captive Management? books: Australian Birds: Biology and Captive Management, Australian reptiles..., Australian insects... etc.

Vertical reading of Dante’s Commedia is an exegetic method based on conjoined analysis of the same-numbered cantos from the three canticles. The book has its origin in a series of thirty-three public lectures held in Trinity College, the University of Cambridge in 2012-2016 by leading contemporary Dante scholars. Unlike the first and the second volumes of the book, the third one unites the essays that make the case for avowedly theological readings of the poem.

This latest two-volume set from Greenwood’s Daily Life Encyclopedia series provides an overview of everyday life and society in Italy during the Renaissance period. After the preface, a brief introductory essay, and chronology, volume 1 contains thematic sections spanning “Arts” to “Food and Drink.” The second volume picks up at “Housing and Community” and concludes with “Science and Technology.” Sections begin with a broad overview (“Introduction”) and are then broken down into alphabetical sub-topical entries offering more nuanced explorations of each. The section “Family and Gender,” for example, contains entries such as “Childhood,” “Espousal and Wedding,” “Old Age,” and “Siblings.” Further readings suggestions, most of which are books, accompany each entry.

Abstract:
e14703 Background: Neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) have been regarded as indolent tumors with significantly variable clinical behavior. Limited information is available on long-term clinical outcome and clinically applicable prognostic factors. We performed a retrospective review of NETS managed in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) over a 12-year period, with examination of epidemiology and various prognostic clinicopathologic factors. Methods: This multicenter analysis included patients in ACT and surrounding New South Wales treated with histologically proven neuroendocrine tumor (lung carcinoids excluded). The cases were identified from hospital databases. Data was analysed according to epidemiological, clinical and histopathological characteristics. Results: The cohort of 107 patients showed slight male predominance. Median age at diagnosis was 62 years and tumour size of 1.2 cm. The most common primary tumour site was jejunum/ileum (32%) followed by rectum (22%) and pancreas (11.2 %). Most patients had localised disease at initial diagnosis (n- 73/107 (68%). Distant metastases were seen in 32% (n-34/107) on initial staging with liver being most common site. Most patients were symptomatic at diagnosis while 22.4% cases were found incidentally. Second malignancies in particular of gastrointestinal origin were diagnosed in 33.6% (n-36/107). Surgical debulking was the most common treatment (59.8%) while 18% had multi-modality therapy. At a median followup of 25 months from diagnosis, 76 patients (78%) were still alive. Median time to first relapse was 15 months. 5 year survival rate was 75% for NETs originating from jejunum/ilieum on Kaplan-Meier analysis. Increasing age, tumor size, male gender, high histological grade, high Ki 67 index, raised plasma chromogranin A and urine 5 HIAA at the time of diagnosis were associated with shorter 5-year survival. Conclusions: The epidemiologic characteristics and long-term outcome in our series was comparable to reported studies from other centers. This analysis confirmed some important prognostic factors that could be considered for risk stratification and therapeutic management in patients with NETs.

Abstract:
Serous fluids are excessive accumulation of fluids in a serous cavity as effusion. However, traditionally this area also covers cytopathologic evaluation of washings of these cavities including pelvic/peritoneal washing. This is the introductory review article in series on this topic with the application of simplified algorithmic approaches. The series would be compiled finally as a book after minor modifications of individual review articles to accommodate the book layout on the topic as second edition of ‘Diagnostic Cytopathology of Serous Fluids’ book. The approach is primarily directed towards detection of neoplastic cells based on morphology alone or with the help of various ancillary tests, including commonly applied immunocytochemistry to be interpreted as second foreign population with application of SCIP (subtractive coordinate immunoreactivity pattern) approach in effusion fluid tapings. As the role of molecular pathology tests is increasing, this component as ancillary testing will also be covered as applicable. Because a picture and sketches are worth a thousand words, illustrations and figures are included generously even at the risk of moderate repetition. The clinically important serous cavities include peritoneal cavity, pericardial cavity, and two pleural cavities. The primary topic of this series is specimens from these cavities as effusion fluids and washings including cytopathologic evaluation of peritoneal/pelvic washing. It is expected that some readers may not read the entire series or the final book from beginning to end, but refer to the individual review articles and chapters sporadically during their clinical practice. Considering this practical limitation, some brief repetition may be observed throughout the book. Some of the important themes will be highlighted as italicized and bolded text for quick reference. Dedicated articles/chapters are assigned for technical and other reference material as appendices. Tables, algorithms, sketches, and combination of pictures are included generously for quick reference. Most of the illustrations are attempted to be labeled appropriately with arrows and other indicators to avoid equivocation, especially for beginners in the field. This introductory review article describes general details under the following three broad headings: Histology and general cytology of serous cavity lining Effusion (general considerations) Ancillary techniques in brief.

J. Foley, William. "Marsupial Nutrition." Pacific Conservation Biology 5, no. 3 (1999): 240. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/pc99240a.

Full text
Abstract:
In the early 1980s advances in marsupial biology could no longer be encapsulated in a single volume such as Hugh Tyndale-Biscoe's "Life of Marsupials" and Cambridge University Press commissioned a series of monographs covering a range of different topics in marsupial biology. As it was, only three of that series were realized and among them was the ptedecessor to this book "Digestive Physiology and Nutrition of Marsupials" published in 1982. "Marsupial Nutrition" is a considerably expanded and comprehensive review of studies of nutrition and digestive physiology of Australasian and South American marsupials. In Australia, many ecologists view the limited nutrient status of our soils and vegetation as a fundamental limit to animal populations. This book explains firstly how Australian marsupials have responded to those limitations and secondly asks whether these responses are common amongst marsupials living in New Guinea and South America.

Abstract:
This study has two primary objectives. The first one is preparation of an efficient review book including a series of activities, which will help fourth grade students exercise what they learned in the elementary science course in a year. The second objective is examination of the prepared book in the framework of student and teacher opinions. In this study, 10 classroom teachers are interviewed at the initial stage. As a result of these interviews, a significant need is determined for a review book for elementary science course, particularly. In the study, qualitative research methods, such as observation, interviews, document analysis and focus group discussion, are used. Data collection tools compose of review book for elementary science course, teacher interview forms, student focus group discussion form and forms, in which students evaluate all activities in the book. The review book prepared by the researchers consists of 38 activities. This book was applied to 25 fifth grade students. These interviews are supported with data of observation and document analysis. The obtained data are analyzed with the content analysis. The review book is considered efficient by teacher and students. This is because it can be applied within a short time and contains whole elementary science topics of fourth grade. Furthermore, teacher can specify students' prior knowledge at the beginning of the academic year and adjust the level and teaching methods in the course accordingly. It can also be used effectively throughout the term.

Abstract:
Looking into affective topics such as historical memories often starts with a very personal story. It was not the case with Santiago Morello, whose curiosity inspired him to research social history and historical memories of Cádiz. Thus he managed to remain objective when answering a simple WHY question. Moreno grew up in Spanish Andalusia and had a first-hand experience of what education is like when there is no consensus on local history — important topics tend to be avoided. As a researcher, Santiago Moreno took a special interest in the repressed participants of the carnival and the prohibition of the carnival in 1937: he defended a thesis, published a collection of carnival-related songs, and produced a documentary Murieron Cantado. The book under review is his latest work on the topic. Moreno posits that sensitive issues of local history should find a wider audience via diverse channels. For this purpose, he initiated thematic excursions, including Cádiz and the Banned Carnival. Today carnival in Cádiz is one of the biggest in Spain, and as of 2021 is being considered to be included in the UNESCO Convention on the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage. The reviewed book comes out as a separate volume in the series of historical records of the Province of Cádiz and presents a unique collection of carnival songs. The first part of the book gives an overview of the historical context, the social background and even managerial and financial aspects of holding a carnival. Lyrics are analyzed in terms of their reflection of the social agenda of the time taking into consideration the censorship. The texts presented in the second half of the book come from different origins since few of them were preserved in the official archives. The author believes is that carnival rests upon enthusiasts who take part in it for generations. During the Civil War, especially after Cádiz was taken over, many of them had to destroy their collections of songs for fear of oppression and a great number of valuable documents were lost. Moreno’s work is a precious yet not comprehensive source for culture studies: the collection includes songs of 94 out of 108 participants of the carnival in 1932–1936. Some of the songs were not submitted to censors, many others were never recorded. Nevertheless, the book will be of interest to specialists in cultural studies, history and folklore, and those fond of the carnival.

Abstract:
In February 2018 the fourth volume of Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality was finally published. Les aveux de la chair [Confessions of the Flesh] was edited by Frédéric Gros, and appeared in the same Gallimard series as Volumes 1, 2 and 3. The book deals with the early Christian Church Fathers of the second to fifth centuries. This essay reviews the book in relation to Foucault’s other work, showing how it sits in sequence with Volumes 2 and 3, but also partly bridges the chronological and conceptual gap to Volume 1. It discusses the state of the manuscript and whether it should have been published, given Foucault’s stipulation of ‘no posthumous publications’. It outlines the contents of the book, which is in three parts, on the formation of a new experience, on virginity and on marriage. There are also some important supplementary materials included. The review discusses how it begins to answer previously unanswered questions about Foucault’s work, and offers some suggestions about how the book might be received and discussed.

Abstract:
In her well-researched book, Professor Nohora García offers a refreshing and in-depth look into the glorious past of accounting theorists and their search for answers to above questions posed by the esteemed elders. The book “Understanding Mattessich and Ijiri: A Study of Accounting Thought” represents the 21st entry of the Studies of Development of Accounting Thought Series, edited by Professor Gary Previts of the Case Western Reserve University and is published by Emerald Publishing, Bingley, UK in the year 2018.Even within the accounting history domain, Professor García’s book takes on an unusual intellectual journey, let alone in the broader accounting scholarly arena. Her work is unusual in at least two dimensions. First, the book’s choice of Mattessich and Ijiri as the two accounting scholars to study poses a formidable challenge because the denseness of these two scholars’ work both in terms of their shared tendencies toward abstraction and their scientific-philosophical orientation. Second, her work singles out one book each from the vast libraries of these two prolific scholars.

Abstract:
Innovations in the fields of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) and the availability and usability improvements seen in recent years in these technologies have opened new possibilities in the field of foreign language learning. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, this study conducted a review of seven recent original articles with empirical data focused on the second language (L2) acquisition using immersive reality technologies. The main aim of this study was to analyze what language skills and what proficiency of students’ language level benefited most from the use of these new technologies. In addition, the authors explored what kind of VR or AR was used since the term may refer to a series of technologies that do not mean the same. For instance, VR might mean using headset displays, or it may refer to the use of interactive environments. The results indicate that the current VR and AR tools show a positive impact on L2 acquisition when compared to traditional learning methods, such as book-based learning. In addition, the findings reveal that VR and AR can be used among students with zero previous knowledge up to an intermediate and advanced level of fluency, with any L2 language. Nevertheless, only listening and reading skills play a role in the acquisition of L2 using virtual reality. However, as with any recent research field, it should be noted that there are several methodological limitations and that it is necessary to consider the achieved results critically.

Abstract:
The review article onEconomic History of Early Modern India(Routledge, London, 2013;Economic Historyfrom now on) by Shami Ghosh is both a review of the book and a series of arguments about how eighteenth-century Indian history should be interpreted. These arguments suggest a few hypotheses about the pattern of economic change in this time (1707–1818), which are presented as an alternative to what the book thinks it is possible to claim, given the current state of knowledge. In pursuing the second objective, which is to seek fresh interpretation, Ghosh recommends reconnecting Indian regions with global economic history more firmly than is in evidence in the book. Overall, the article subjects the book to a close reading, and outlines a research programme that will surely help further the discourse on the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
Language and Children: A Guide to Teaching Foreign Languages in American Elementary and Secondary Classrooms is a classic second language teaching series co-authored by two language educators, Helena Cotton and Carol Ann Dahlberg. The book reflects the latest advances in language classroom research and is the only comprehensive guide to foreign language classroom methods for K-12 and college students, using language learning objectives as the guiding principles for classroom rules and instruction. [Cheng Liang: "The Golden Key to Second Language Acquisition: A Review of the American Guide to Teaching Foreign Language in Elementary and Secondary Schools," Journal of Jiamusi Vocational College, 2019 (05)] Through careful reading, I have gained deeper thoughts and knowledge about various aspects of immersion teaching, teaching integration of language and culture, and teaching communication. Because I am very interested in "how to realize the organic integration of language and culture teaching in second language teaching classrooms," I focused on Chapter 9, "Experiencing Culture in the Classroom: Interaction of Language, Culture and Curriculum," and came up with a series of reflections, including insights into children's cultural teaching, academic associations, thoughts on overseas Chinese cultural I have a series of reflections, including insights on teaching children's culture, academic associations, thoughts on teaching Chinese culture overseas, and reflections on some of the contents of the book.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines curriculum and practice in Australian secondary classroom music education, in order to trace the inclusion of, and provision for, students with learning orientations based on popular music forms. A 60-year period of curriculum reform, matriculation statistics and literature is surveyed with a focus on the state of New South Wales (NSW), where the ‘non-literate’ student musician was first acknowledged in curriculum documents dating from the late 1970s at the senior secondary level (Music Syllabus Year 11 and 12: New 2 Unit A Course. Draft Document). Three overlapping eras frame discussion. The first discusses the original post–World War II school curriculum established for Western art music (WAM); the second discusses the period of curriculum reform beginning in the 1960s and 1970s, which leads to the inclusion of popular music at junior secondary levels; and the third is the present era from roughly 1980 onwards, where separate pathways of instruction are maintained for WAM and students with interests in popular and contemporary musics. Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) from the sociology of education is employed, with analysis unveiling a series of historic code shifts and clashes with implications for present practice. An unveiling of these codes explains the cause of ongoing tensions surrounding the inclusion of popular music and musicians in Australian music classrooms and provides foundation for much-needed curriculum development in the NSW context, and potentially elsewhere, where similar dynamics underpin practice in secondary classrooms.

Abstract:
My first reaction on reading Tom Hurstbourne or A Squatter's Life was surprise. When I first met them, the novel's editors, Gerard Benjamin and Gloria Grant had been very forthcoming about how they came by the manuscript – an intriguing saga in itself. However (and I hope they don't mind me saying this), I remember that they were deliberately a bit cagey about what the book was like as a work of fiction. What little they did say led me to expect something like a pioneering saga, with a straightforward life-narrative, probably beginning with the hero's childhood in the Old Country, then moving quickly to the Australian outback where the hero would undergo a series of challenges, hardships and adventures, suffering a bit along the way but emerging more or less triumphant at the end, sometimes with a wife, children and extensive landholdings. Quite a few Australian novels of this kind were published in the second half of the nineteenth century, and even more in the early decades of the twentieth – books like Miles Franklin's All That Swagger, Mary Durack's Kings in Grass Castles, Brian Penton's Landtakers, Roy Connolly's Southern Saga, Jeanie Gunn's We of the Never Never, and many others by lesser known authors.

Abstract:
The review sets out to critically examine the book by M. Babicheva and single out its defining characteristics. Printed in the Book Universe [‘Knizhnaya vselennaya’] series, the collection in question consists of biobibliographical essays on the works penned by writers of the second-wave Russian emigration. The book is divided into seventeen chapters devoted to the life and work of such authors as V. Alekseev, G. Andreev, G. Klimov, F. Kubansky, S. Maksimov, N. Narokov, L. RzhevskyV. Samarin, V. Sven, M. Solovyov, N. Troitsky, Ulyanov, T. Fesenko, B. Shiryaev, V. Yurasov et al. Each essay summarises the author’s biography and supplies a bibliography listing the émigré’s works of fiction, journalistic and critical output, as well as literature dedicated to their life and work. The book helps to complete the dismal portrayal of the 20th-c. history, particularly World War II and Stalinist repressions, the two major causes of the second wave of Russian emigration.

Full text
Abstract:
Total urban mobilization seeks meaning and reasons for the probability of post capitalist city in future. Krzysztof Nawratek discusses the forest rebel concept of Junger to define its actors and agencies for the next challenging world. Historically, Western cities are ethical followers of Rome in many ways; where the idea of emperor always influential. His existence is implicit at the same time his presence evident from the series of voids between diverse social institutions, as Badiou described. Previously, scholars like Kevin Lynch identified district, territory or edge from experienced based ‘place making’ which is similar to Cartesian ‘neutral or tool based’ space creation. He brought the Chinese concept of ‘All under heaven,’ a complex system is not referring any physical and territorial boundary of city. The author has seen these boundaries as opportunity for different agencies that might coexist and interact. Network of proper coexisting of urban agencies can trigger effective actors outside the capitalist world as a ‘hole’. From such windows, non-profit logic of neoliberalism, ambiguity and messy contextualization will emerge as an alternative, post capitalist system in future. It might turn into a worldwide complex ecosystem, a second layer in global network in post capitalist stage. This is how Language could be re-invented in contrast to the Numbers, writes Ar. Sayed Ahmed.

The topic of this book, part of a new series published by Benjamins entitled Pragmatics and beyond, is negotiated interaction. The first two chapters (a third of the text) seek to operationalize interaction and define the role of negotiated interaction in second language acquisition (SLA). These chapters are useful in the sense that they provide a fairly comprehensive review of the literature prior to 1991. However, the field has come a long way since that time, and a decade of crucial work is missing from this 1999 book.

Abstract:
The article considers the role of merchant libraries in the history of the city. The reviewed books open a new publishing series of the scientific library of Irkutsk University, dedicated to merchant libraries of Irkutsk. Its publications provide an opportunity to get familiar with the old book collections of Irkutsk residents, know more about the interest in books and reading in our city as well as the history of private libraries. The first book in the series, published in 2019, was dedicated to the book collection of the largest Irkutsk merchant, the philanthropist and bibliophile V.N. Basnin, whose estate was one of the largest cultural salons in Irkutsk in the first half of the 19th century. The book under review contains the most complete catalog of Basnin’s library, which he had been collecting for more than 40 years. It should be noted that he was not only a reader, but also quite a professional bibliographer, ordered by mail novelty books, making their systematization and description. The second book in the series is dedicated to other merchant libraries. Its compilers have done a lot of research work to find these publications, systematize them and identify their owners. The catalog presented by the Irkutsk State University library most fully reflects the merchants’ interest in printed publications. It includes 969 book titles, reflecting 1 194 editions with exlibrises, autographs and notes of their owners. Despite the purely bibliographic nature of the peer-reviewed publications, which are considered in the research, they are of interest to different groups of people. The author notes the importance of the books not only to library workers, but also to all the readers who are not indifferent to the history of cultural life in Irkutsk, as well as to the role of books and home libraries in personality development and formation of human abilities.

Abstract:
This monograph aims to disseminate the results of various research studies carried out in the field of social and community psychology. The studies focus on efforts to build a culture of peace in post-conflict contexts and societies that have suffered collective and socio-political violence, with multiple and persistent human rights violations. Six studies on the psychosocial effects of transitional justice rituals from Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Basque country, Chile, and Ecuador compose this issue. This issue presents a series of results regarding the effects of reparation rituals and Truth Commissions, combining different methods and analysis strategies, including general population surveys, newspaper and social media content analysis, community intervention assessments and qualitative documentary analysis. Finally, two review books were included. First, a Peace Psychology Book that explores the implications and difficulties faced by societies that have experienced large-scale collective violence. Second, the problem of human rights violations and how to confront them, socio-political conflicts and the building of a culture of democracy and peace in Latin America are transversal axes of the chapters of this second book.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is an important - though controversial - addition to the discourse surrounding Islamic political thought. It traces its lineage to the debate advocating a separation of religion and politics. By putting this politico-religious discourse into a new oxymoronic term, ‘religious secularity’, the author attempts to construct another theological challenge to the concept of an Islamic state. Hailing from Iran, Dr. Naser Ghobadzadeh (currently a Research Fellow at the Institute for Social Justice, the Australian Catholic University), examines Islamic politico-religious discourse in the context of his homeland. Briefly reviewing the political struggles Muslims have faced during the second half of the twentieth century while trying to fulfil their aspirations of establishing an Islamic state, he attempts to describe the parallel Iranian quest for a democratic secular state. Being aware of the varied definitions and understandings of the term ‘secularism’, he intentionally uses the term ‘secularity’ to clarify the distinction between the emerging discourse in Iran and the conventional understanding of secularism as a global paradigm. This discourse, according to the author, was first developed following a series of articles written by Abdulkarim Soroush in 1989, in which the latter emphasized a separation of religion from religious knowledge (p.25). The author ignores, however, the Sunni scholar, Shaykh Ali Abdul Raziq, who, in his book entitled al-Islam wa usul al-Hukm (1925), held the same view. This might be because of the author’s focus on Shi'ite political thought.

Anderson, Marx at the Margins: On Nationalism, Ethnicity and Non-Western Societies, expanded edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2016), 344 pages, $25, paperback.Recent years have seen the development of a fresh area of research into Marx's critique of political economy, based on his previously unpublished economic manuscripts and notebooks, which have been made newly available in the updated edition of the complete works of Marx and Engels, the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA). Lucia Pradella published the first detailed analysis in English of Marx's London Notebooks, and Brill's Historical Materialism book series recently celebrated its hundredth volume with a translation of Marx's original manuscript for volume 3 of Capital, based on the new MEGA edition. The same series also published Heather Brown's Marx on Gender, which drew extensively on his late notebooks. And earlier this year, the second, expanded edition of Kevin Anderson's Marx at the Margins: On Nationalism, Ethnicity and Non-Western Societies appeared. The first edition of Anderson's book, published in 2010, inaugurated this new trend in Marxist studies, and it remains among the most important achievements in the field.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

ighly acclaimed and endorsed by leading econometricians, the book “New Directions in Econometric Practice” is not new among the econometrics and statisticians. It is more of a textbook for students of econometrics and statistics at various levels. It impressively attempts to addressthe main objective of explaining ‘how to practice econometrics’. It provides an accessibleand user-friendly approach to a new approach and methodology presented by David Hendry in his book,‘Dynamic Econometrics’. The book under review provides a practical and hands-on illustration ofHendry’s approach, enabling students to use it for themselves inreal world time-series econometric problems. The second edition of thebook attempts to address the shortfalls identified by some reviewers in the first edition. By providing practical guidelines in terms of empirical illustration of each technique, using DHSY’s suggested aggregated timeseries consumption function on PC-Gives (8.1 Professional), it opens new trails ofresearch. The book is primarily designed for providing an intuitive understanding of recent developments in econometrics to nonspecialist econometricians and is widely adopted by teachers, students and practitioners alike

Abstract:
Despite recently going through a sort of a crisis brought about by critical remarks made by eminent scholars (e.g., Dörnyei, 2005) about the raison d’être of the whole research area, the field of language learning/learner strategies (LLSs) is still very much alive and kicking. This is manifested by constant publication of meta-analyses (e.g., Plonsky, 2011), numerous journal articles, including state-of-the-art pieces (e.g., Pawlak, 2019), special issues of journals (e.g., Pawlak & Oxford, 2018) and books (e.g., Oxford, 2017), and the organization of a conference series (Situating Strategy Use [SSU]), all devoted exclusively to LLSs. The book under review here, Situating Language Learning Strategy Use: Present Issues and Future Trends, edited by Zoe Gavriilidou and Lydia Mitits, includes chapters originating in the talks delivered at the Second International Conference on SSU (Komotini, Greece, September 2017).
